Make a bold statement with this papier mâché initial by Corinne Bradd
rather simple yet ingenious way to add a personalised touch to your home is by crafting yourself an initial. Proving itself to be a popular interior design trend, typography and the use of giant letters throughout the home is a fun way to take your name and add some character to it. Showcase your personality by using paint and patterned paper in a motif that best describes you. This make by Corinne Bradd has endless possibilities − adorn the mantelpiece with one or create a pair to use as bookends!
You Will Need
Craft essentials (see p92) Cereal boxes Toilet rolls Kitchen towel Mod Podge Chalk paint Sandpaper
1 Trace out your chosen letter onto two flattened out cereal boxes and cut both out, ensuring that the width of the lines of the letter is 5cm. Cut a few toilet rolls to 4.5cm tall. 2 Use PVA glue to adhere the tubes to the right side of one letter, making sure they don’t overlap the edges. Apply glue to the top of each tube and place the second letter on top. Weigh it down with a book whilst the glue sets.
3 Measure the distance between the letters and trim out several strips of this width from a cereal box. Use masking tape to fix the strips between the two letters, creating a smooth and solid shape. 4 Papier mâché the initial using squares of kitchen towel and PVA glue. Overlap the squares but keep the layer fairly flat. Allow to dry before applying a second coat of tissue. Once dried, cover with your chosen colour of chalk paint. 5 Apply a second coat of chalk paint in a paler shade. Once dry, sand away some of the top coat to reveal the darker colour underneath, paying attention to areas where the kitchen towel texture is visible. Cut out several floral motifs from patterned paper and apply to the front of the letter. Seal the entire shape with a coat of matte Mod Podge with a sponge to prevent brushmarks.

Here, designer Corinne Bradd explains the new features this nifty machine has to offer, and demonstrates how you can use it to make a beautiful birthday greeting.
What’s to love about the ScanNCut CM900?
you’ll also find a six-colour pen set, two erasable pens and more!

How do I make this pretty card on the right?
What features does it have? The CM900 boasts state-of-the-art features that will take your crafting to the next level. Use it to create patterns and cut out a variety of materials to decorate your next make. You don’t need any image cartridges either – instead, cut out personalised elements like your own handwriting. Big birthday cards are the best! To begin, fold a piece of A3 card in half and cut it into a square blank. Cover the card with wide horizontal strips of bright patterned paper. Pick a pretty border pre-set and cut two strips from white card to place along the top and bottom edges of the greeting. Opt for a block alphabet and resize to approximately 3cm high. Type ‘Happy birthday’ and cut the letters from yellow card. Arrange the sentiment across the centre, tilting the letters randomly and fixing them in place with foam pads.

advice
Edit the size of your design via the screen on the machine by selecting it with your pen, pressing the resize symbol and altering the height and width accordingly Always make sure that the product you’re cutting is pressed down evenly on your mat to prevent it from missing some areas. The back of the spatula is perfect for this When working with scraps of paper, use the on-screen grid to help you place the pieces you want to cut out
