Friendly FACES

Create cute gestures using a new stamp and die combo from Stampin’ Up!

C

heery animal motifs pop up a lot in our projects, because nine times out of ten, nothing says it better than an adorable critter! To make it even easier to include them in our makes, Stampin’ Up! has released a brand-new die and stamp set that offers a range of different shapes and elements that you can combine to customise your favourite creatures. From greeting cards to gift boxes, designer Elizabeth Moad demonstrates just how simple creating your next friendly face can be.

You Will Need  Craft essentials (see p92)  Stampin’ Up! Playful Pals stamp set  Stampin’ Up! Pyramid Pals Thinlits dies  Ink pad: black, red  Sentiment stamps  Scallop-edged scissors

HOPPY BIRTHDAY 1 Mount the rectangular oval stamp onto an acrylic block, cover it with dark blue ink and stamp several times onto the top left of a 12.5cm x 17cm piece of blue card. Repeat this on the bottom left and centre right to create lily pad shapes. 2 Using a rectangular oval outline stamp and black ink, stamp four shapes onto green card then cut out. Take the frog leg die and cut four left and four right shapes from green card. Print over each one with the leg outline stamp and black ink. Glue them to the bodies. 3 Die cut three sets of large eyes and one pair of small eyes from white card and outline each one using a circular eye stamp and black ink. Cut small pieces of green card and place them on top of the eyes as lids. Attach the eyes to the bodies and draw eyelashes on one frog and eyebrows on another. 4 Add a mouth to three of the frogs using a smiley stamp and black ink. Add another onto the fourth frog using red ink. Secure the frogs onto the card using foam pads. Print a ‘Hoppy birthday’ sentiment onto light blue card, cut out using scallop-edged scissors and glue onto the top right of the design. Mount this section onto a dark blue blank, leaving a narrow border.

LOVE TO MAKE

“The stamps and dies work seamlessly together to help speed up your crafting time and make it easy to create batches of party invitations”

ELIZABETH MOAD, DESIGNER

ANIMAL BOXES 1 Using the triangle box die, cut out two shapes from pink card. Fold along the score lines and attach both shapes together at the square base. Die cut two elephant ears, a trunk and tail from pink card and two small eyes from white card. Outline each shape in black ink using the corresponding stamps. 2 Stamp a mouth with black ink onto one triangular side, place a gift inside, then glue the box together. Attach the ears, trunk, tails and eyes as shown. Repeat using grey card to make a second elephant. 3 To create the frog box, form the shape using the triangular die and blue card. Die cut a rectangular oval shape and two frog legs from green card, then two large eyes from white card. 4 Outline in black ink using the corresponding stamps. Place a gift inside and stick the box together. Assemble the frog as shown and attach to one side of the box.

Bonus idea...

You can use elements from your die set to create something a little different too, like this elegant pyramid gift box 1 Die cut a triangle box from orange card, fold along the score lines and attach the shapes together at the square base. 2 Cut out four smaller triangles from patterned paper and attach them to the centre of the triangular sides. Place a gift inside and assemble the box. 3 Stamp a ‘Thank you’ sentiment onto orange card and cut into a rectangular shape. Punch a hole in one end and thread through orange ribbon, tying it into a bow. Fix this to one side of the gift box.

You Will Need  Craft essentials (see p92)  FREE Tool Buddies Scoring Board  Punches: thumb notch, scalloped border, corner rounder  Buttons  Picture frame

ZIG-ZAG CARD 1 Using the regular line side of your board, score a landscape 15cm x 21cm piece of card at 7cm and 14cm intervals. Trim the card top at a 30° angle. Concertina-fold the card so the shortest piece is at the front. 2 Cover the card front with patterned paper and the middle section in a plain colour. Leave the back portion blank for your message. 3 Trim wording paper into a narrow strip and use to edge the top of each section. Add die-cut motifs to the front.

PICTURE THIS 1 Score a 15cm x 21cm piece of card in half. Turn to a landscape orientation so that the fold is at the top and trim to 14cm. 2 Cover the front of the card with two strips of patterned paper, leaving a narrow line of background card at the top, middle and bottom. 3 Mount a sentiment panel onto pink card. Round off the corners with a punch. Fix coloured baker's twine over the panel. Add a small button before glueing the panel to the left side of the card, allowing it to extend at the top.

GATEFOLD CARDS ARE EASY TO CREATE WITH THE SPECIAL GROOVES ON YOUR SCORE BOARD

GORGEOUS GATEFOLD 1 Score a 15cm x 21cm piece of card into a gatefold shape using the cardmaking side of the board. Attach patterned paper to the panels.

4 Punch two holes at the top and bottom of the left flap, 1cm apart and 1cm from the edge of the card. Thread baker's twine through the holes, crossing and knotting it in the centre of the rosette.

2 Layer a 5.5cm x 7.5cm of yellow patterned onto matching card and trim, leaving a 2mm border. Fix to the left front flap of the card at a jaunty angle, using foam pads.

HOT AIR BALLOON

3 Score a strip of pink card every 5mm using the regular line side of the board. Fold into a concertina, glue the ends, then flatten to make a rosette. Fix to the top left of the layered panel.

1 Using the cardmaking side of the board, score a 15cm x 21cm piece of card in half. Place it face down on the regular line side, then score across at 1cm intervals.

2 Turn the card 90° and score again to make a raised grid pattern on the front of the card. 3 Add collage and border strips on the panels for decoration. Ensure one panel is fixed with foam pads. 4 Concertina-fold ticket printed paper and attach to the front of the card, so one corner of each stack tucks under the slightly raised panel.

“Use your free score board to create fun wavy edges, as shown on this funky card

ELAINE BENNETT, EDITOR

WAVY BICYCLES 1 Score a 15cm x 21cm piece of pink card on the A4 gatefold line. Lay the leading edge face down over the wavy line, 1.5cm from the last line on the board. Tape it down lightly. Score the wavy line into the card. 2 Move the card onto the last line, tape down and score another wavy line. Use a craft knife or scissors to cut away the excess card to the right of the first wavy line. 3 Place a 6cm x 21cm panel of patterned paper face down on the wavy line as before and score twice. Cut the paper on the outermost line and fix to the card, matching up the wavy lines. 4 Add a decorative border strip down the left of the card. Use foam pads to fix bicycle motifs next to each wave.

DOILY DREAM 1 Use the regular side of the board to score an 8.5cm x 35cm piece of card at alternating 3cm and 2cm intervals. Concertina-fold the card so that there is a larger panel at the top and bottom of the stack. 2 Punch scalloped borders from plain white paper. Fix to the right edge of each large panel, arranging and trimming so that the scallops line up. 3 Cover the front of all the larger panels in patterned paper, so that they overlap slightly to hide the top edge of the doilies. 4 Cut out motifs and sentiments and fix to some of the panels so they extend across the folded card, but stand out when it is displayed.

Crafters’ guide TO DECOUPAGE I

sn’t Corinne Bradd’s donkey decoupage greeting the cutest little pick-me-up? We can’t get enough of the technique at the moment, and Hunkydory’s latest Step Into Springtime Designer Deco-Large collection is packed with everything you would find in the most charming of farmyards and gardens, is just the set we need to reach higher crafting heights. Whip up a professional-quality card in a jiffy with this die-cut decoupage set containing plenty of motifs and sentiments, then let your recipient admire the finished 3D effect!

What is decoupage? Decoupage is the art of using cut-out replicate layers to add depth and dimension to an image. Traditional decoupage involves manually cutting each element, or alternatively, die-cut decoupage is extremely popular, with everything supplied ready-cut. The Step Into Springtime Designer Deco-Large Collection is quite spectacular because the ‘jumbo’ style of this collection means that more detail can be seen, and the die-cut elements are easier to use than more intricate decoupage sets.

How can I achieve the 3D effect?

could want for springtime crafting, with a classic country cottage scene that evokes wonderful memories of warm spring days from times gone by and fresh new floral blooms. There are also wonderful kittens and collie dogs that are always so popular for cardmaking, plus Easter chicks and bunnies, delightful donkeys and iconic spring lambs!

Shopping List

Layers are built up one by one, with each element of the scene on its own level. It’s very easy to make any design look three-dimensional by backing each section with small foam pads to raise it up off the previous layer. You can even emphasise special parts by adding more height, making it look like it’s coming towards the recipient more than other elements.

I love springtime. What other scenes are there in the collection? The fabulous Designer Deco-Large collection covers everything a crafter

Step Into Springtime Designer Deco-Large Collection, £24.99, hunkydorycrafts.co.uk

How to create 3D layers

1

Push out the largest section from the sheet and remove the small shapes. Fix foam pads to the corners on the back of the shapes

2

Line up the decoupage section with the printed design and press to adhere

3

Fix pads onto the reverse of smaller shapes such as the chick, then stick to form the next layer

4

Finish the card with individual sentiment pieces at the top and side of the card

“Play around with perspective and add more layers to different parts of the scene to make them really stand out. However, keep the depth you are creating in mind if you want to fit the card into an envelope!” ROSALIND MOODY, DEPUTY EDITOR
