About the Couple

Cherise and Jacob were both raised in Mobile, Alabama and attended John L. Leflore High School. Upon graduation, Cherise attended Clark Atlanta University, where she played volleyball. Jake attended Alabama A&M University, where he played football. Upon graduation from their respective universities, both attended Graduate School and obtained their Masters. Cherise received her Masters in Long-Term Care, Senior Housing, and Aging (LSHA) from the University of North Texas. Jake received his Masters in Education Leadership and Administration from Jones International University. Cherise and Jacob knew each other in high school and had mutual friends. Jake was a senior at the time that Cherise was a freshman so Cherise said jokingly that the “big man on campus” didn’t pay attention to the “little freshman” in the hallways. They did have a bit of a friendship, though, and even worked at Twin Oaks Nursing Home for their first jobs. After college, Cherise and Jake ran into each other in Atlanta, Georgia, where they had both begun their careers. Jake was teaching at an Atlanta Public School and Cherise was an Administrator at a Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Lawrenceville. After seeing one another, they exchanged numbers and kept in touch from 2005. They didn’t pursue a relationship immediately because Cherise was in a relationship and Jake was enjoying his bachelor lifestyle. In 2006, Cherise relocated to Dallas, Texas for Graduate School, but returned to Atlanta in 2008. Cherise and Jake continued their friendship until one night in 2009. Cherise’s best friends asked, “Who is this Jake guy and what’s up with him?” After that, as they say, the rest is history! Cherise and Jake started dating in 2009 and became engaged on August 2, 2013.

The Proposal

On August 2, 2013, the day before I left for a family cruise, Jake made reservations to a well known, high class restaurant in Atlanta. I should have known what was coming with all of the red flags that night! Flag #one was the restaurant. We like to eat out a lot but this was not a “normal” restaurant to go to. But I went on with it and as usual I got off work late and met Jake. I was unable to change clothes due to time but he came out all fresh and smooth…flag #2! We checked in with the hostess at the restaurant for our reservations and the manager came up to him and said Hi Mr. Wilson. I asked him, how does the manager know your name? He said, Oh…I met him when I made the reservations…flag #3. The hostess walked us to our a nice, big booth in the back of the restaurant. As we were walking up I noticed a beautiful dozen of pink roses. Once I figured that was our table I asked Jake, Why is our table the only table with flowers? He responded by saying, well I wanted to do something nice for you before you leave. I’m going to miss you and you deserve it. Yeah yeah…that was nice but that was flag # 4! So, we sit down and enjoy our delicious meal. I noticed that my healthy, football playing fiancé did not eat his meal like usual. So I asked him, What’s wrong, why didn’t you eat all of your food? (not knowing he was nervous) He told me, he was full and wanted to save the rest for lunch tomorrow…being that I wouldn’t be there to cook for him. Good response but flag #5! Jake then asked me to play a song on my ipad for him while we waited for dessert. After debate about playing music in a nice restaurant I finally gave in and played Luther Vandross “Love Won’t Let Me Wait.” Flag # 6! During us jamming to Luther (quietly, of course, lol) the waiter comes with a silver platter, a white napkin, and red box. He sat it down on the table in front of me and said, “Ma’am, this is our special dessert for tonight.” He then pulled the table in front of me and away from the booth and simultaneously, another waiter threw a pillow at my feet. At this point, I’m in shock and Jake looks at me and said, “Well boo, it’s about that time.” He got on one knee and asked me to marry him. Needless to say, I said yes like a hundred times and the waiter brought champagne and a congratulations dessert. The celebration started that night with a million of calls and text messages!
