DJ Star

In Zweibrücken, Germany on June 13, 1984, Donald Ray Johnson II was born to Deborah Coleman and Donald Johnson. He was the baby of 3 siblings; Kenneth Johnson, La Tasha Washington (Robert Washington) and Nadia S. Johnson. His maternal grandparents are the late Dorothy Douglas, Melvin Coleman Sr. and Curtis Douglas. Affectionately known as “DJ” or Buddy by his big sister Nadia, he spent his early years in Great Falls, Montana before moving to Shreveport, LA in 1989. Early in his life DJ gave his life to Christ. He grew up in Shreveport, LA and attended Caddo Parish schools with a graduation from Fair Park High School in 2002. DJ was a member of the Fair Park Marching band where he was a shining tenor drummer. Watching his older brother, Ken, deejay house parties as a child heightened his already innate love for music. In every room he entered he entertained and made everyone feel like they were the Star. From dance crews on stages to the football fields where he marched and played the tenor drum, DJ was always putting on a show. After dropping his first mix at thirteen, DJ knew that music and entertainment would be how he spent his life. In 2002, DJ entered The Grambling State University where he continued to play the tenor drum for the renowned World Famed Marching Band, and became a member of Chocolate Thunder (C Phi T). While matriculating at Grambling State University, DJ majored in Psychology. Many exciting life events occurred while he was at Grambling. In 2003, DJ was blessed with a baby boy, Khyron Deshon. There were many changes that were around the corner for DJ. He became a music deejay and took on the name of “DJ Star Da College Champ.” Also at Grambling State, DJ Star was a member of Showstoppers Ent and the Bayou Boys organization. From there he transformed into a well known entertainer in North Louisiana, and later, around the world. Touring with various artists including; Trillville, Lil Scrappy, Hurricane Chris, and Damar Jackson, DJ’s astute reputation as a legendary deejay was solidified. In 2006, DJ joined the radio broadcasting field via 103.1 The Party and then to 100.1 The Beat. During his tenure at The Beat, DJ kept the station at #1 10 consecutive years in a row. Over the years DJ could be heard over the airwaves in Shreveport on 103.7 The Beat as well as globally on iHeartRadio. DJ Star built a brand as an entertainment mogul developing DJ Star Inc and Headlines Starlight Enterprises, Inc. In 2013, his 2nd son Mason Chandler, was born. DJ was proud of many things however being a father was what he would say was his greatest accomplishment. When Skylar was born in 2016 she completed her Daddy’s heart. DJ was very meek and an avid humanitarian who believed in making everything better around him. He always gave more of himself than he ever received by finding joy in giving. No matter where he was he never met a stranger and made everyone feel like family. He ended every broadcast with “ Keep God first and everything will be alright. Walk by faith and not by sight, make your next move your best move!” DJ’s presence will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and community. DJ leaves to cherish his precious memory and indisputable legacy, his mother, Deborah Coleman, his father, Mark L Tolbert, his siblings, Kenneth W. Johnson, La Tasha T. Washington (Robert W. Washington), and Nadia S. Johnson, his adopted brothers, Eddie Brown, Jr. and Rashaad Joseph; two sons, Khyron Deshon Jackson and Mason Chandler Johnson, one daughter, Skylar Gray Johnson; an adopted daughter, London Paige Jackson; two nephews, Raphael Johnson and Marcus Washington; two nieces, Jocelyn Johnson and Mia Washington; two great-nephews, Jace Johnson and Jonah Johnson. DJ also leaves a host of aunties, uncles, cousins, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dorothy M. Douglas, Curtis Douglas, Melvin Coleman, Sr., and Adelle Tolbert; his cousins, Zelwannica Coleman, Gertarious Buntyn, and Patrick Lampkin; and his uncle, Jesse L. Porter.
