How to Register

Recreational and Social Opportunities for Individuals with Disabilities

Adapted Recreation programs are designed to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities from 12 months to over 60 years of age. Adapted Recreation staff is composed of certified special education teachers, certified paraprofessionals, and volunteers, who are on hand for most programs to assist and encourage the individuals as needed. Any individuals requiring assistance with matters not directly related to the activities and needing assistance with toileting and feeding must bring a chaperone/aide. Dance Club (15 Yrs & Up)

Come join us for a fun night of dancing along with other fun activities each month. We will meet at Sam Johnson Recreation Center, 401 W. 16th Street. The goal of this program is to increase socialization, self-esteem, and physical exercise. Light refreshments are provided. Parents are asked to pick up participants rather than arrange for public transportation.

Fun Bunch Bowlers (14 Yrs & Up)

Adaptive bowling for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities gives participants the opportunity to strengthen their fine motor skills while having fun interacting with their peers. Bowlers meet at Allen Bowl, 1011 S. Greenville Ave, Allen, on alternate Saturdays. Registration fee covers bowling, and shoe rental.

If you are looking to build social skills, while gaining knowledge and your love for basketball, then this camp is for you. Let us show you how to dribble, pass and shoot with confidence. We will be working on your overall cardio, to help increase your game abilities. There will be daily basketball game scrimmages, at the end of each day. For safety concerns, individuals with severe behavioral issues will not be permitted at this time.

Kid’s Activities

Adapted Gymnastics Boys (3-6 Yrs)

Students with special needs will feel a real sense of accomplishment and independence as they learn how to roll, hang, swing, and go upside down all by themselves. Students will be taught basic skills on the pommel horse, high bar, parallel bars, floor vault and other activities. Each child will progress at a rate which they are most comfortable.

In this beginning gymnastics class for children with special needs, they will learn very basic skills on the vault, bars, beam, floor and trampoline, as well as other activities. They won’t know it, but they will also be improving their gross motor skills, hand eye coordination, body awareness and building self-esteem. Each child will progress at a rate which they are most comfortable.

What a great way to improve social skills for individuals with special needs... by participating in a challenging, yet fun, adapted gymnastics class with your peers! Improving the ability to appropriately socialize with your peers will be the emphasis of this class, as students are introduced to beginning skills on the gymnastics equipment.

Specialized Aquatics

Adapted FlowRider (Beg/Int)

This class is for participants with special needs. Learn to ride the big waves on the FlowRider at Jack Carter Pool. This class is geared towards individuals with special needs. Staff can accommodate for participants using a modified board as well as guided instruction making it possible for anyone to ride the wave. All ability levels are welcome to participate. For safety purposes, the minimum class requirements are: all participants are at least 42 inches in height to ride the bodyboard; all participants are at least 48 inches in height to stand-up ride; all participants wanting to standup ride must sign the FlowRider release of liability waiver. The Waiver can be obtained from the Jack Carter Pool web page. If you are under the age of 18, a parent/guardian must sign the waiver.

Summer Camps

Special Edition Kid Kapers (5-7 Yrs)

Campers will enhance their fine motor skills, their social skills, and most importantly life skills through a variety of fun activities such as arts and crafts, story and music time. Volunteers are on hand to assist staff with participants. Please bring a morning snack, a sack lunch and a drink to camp each day. Camp will not be held the week of July 4th.

Nature Camp will emphasize experiential learning. Campers will spend time outside, having fun observing nature up close using items like binoculars and magnifying lenses. Science will be introduced in a fun environment, with crafts, games, and hands-on activities. Camp will be held at Windhaven Meadows Park.

Keep your child engaged this summer by signing up for Friendship Camp! This camp offers campers a variety of activities that enhance social skills, as well as vital life skills for individuals with a disability. Through our arts and crafts program, swimming and exercise activities, your child’s overall well-being will be enhanced. Come meet new friends and visit with old ones, and see how much fun Friendship Camp is. Campers must be able to follow directions and adhere to all rules. Camp is held at Liberty Recreation Center, 2601 Glencliff Drive.

This camp is designed to meet the needs of individuals on the Autism Spectrum. This group project will require students to have reasonably good language skills and an ability to interact with others. Social skills will be enhanced and teamwork will be fostered throughout the process of producing the video.

Teen Trek (16-22 Yrs)

Teen Trek is an exciting full-day adventure camp for teens and young adults with disabilities. Campers will be engaged in social and vocational activities such as learning to fill out job applications, etiquette activities and money management through budget activities. They will be on the move by participating in outdoor adventures visiting local attractions. Participants must be compliant and respond well to schedule changes should they arise. Teen Trek will make this a summer to remember. Teen Trek will meet at Oak Point Recreation Center, 6000 Jupiter Rd. Camp does not meet the week of July 4th.

Movie Night & Pizza (16 Yrs & Up)

Enjoy two of your favorite activities in one evening: eating pizza and watching a movie. Increase your leisure satisfaction and social life by sharing this evening with friends. Registration fee includes the cost of admission into the movie. Bring enough money to cover the cost of pizza and a drink at CiCi’s. Drop off and pick up will be at Liberty Recreation Center. The time of the outing may change due to the movie time.

Join us for an exciting trip to the Mesquite Rodeo. Share in the fun and excitement of watching the cowboys rope a steer and ride the bucking horses. We will meet at Liberty Recreation Center, 2601 Glencliff. Registration fee includes the cost of transportation and admission. Bring money if you wish to purchase dinner, snacks or other items. Parents, please arrange to pick up participants yourselves and on time, as the recreation center will be closed.
