SPRING CALENDAR

Plano Parks & Recreation has prided itself in offering an award-winning mix of parks, recreation facilities, and open space for all residents to enjoy for more than 50 years. Now more than ever, residents are reaping the benefits of these amenities by taking in the fresh air, exercise and sense of a peace in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, average trail use in Plano increased 128 percent in 2020, according to trail counter data. Because of this surge in visitors, we created a park monitor program last spring to encourage safe physical activity while obeying social distancing and general park guidelines. Together with the community’s overall cooperation, our parks remained open and safe throughout the year. Plano’s Parks, Recreation, Trails, and Open Space Master Plan, approved by City Council in 2018, outlines our goals for recreation over the next 20 years. These goals include encouraging healthy lifestyles, refreshing and modernizing our park infrastructure, and providing amenities that reflect the growing diversity of this city. We are who we are because of who you are. Therefore, an integral part of our mission is to stay abreast of your changing recreation and leisure needs to ensure they are being met. Maintaining existing trails, parks, playgrounds and recreation facilities continues to be a top priority – be sure to check our Parks Projects & Plans page for details on current and upcoming projects. The pandemic also changed the way we think about health and recreation. With our indoor pools and recreation centers now open (with some restrictions) and outdoor recreation programs underway, our innovative staff has put together a variety of fun and unique inperson and online classes and programs to suit your needs this spring. From adult sports leagues and night hikes to continuing education, fitness, aquatics and more, there is always something for everyone. Our affordable options are a great way to explore that hobby you’ve been wanting to try or make good on those New Year’s resolutions. For more news and updates on other department projects, please follow Plano Parks and Recreation on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Ron Smith Director, Plano Parks and Recreation

Athletic Reservation Program for Practices

Plano residents may reserve City of Plano athletic fields for practices during league seasons on a space-available basis subject to closures necessary for field recovery or activity preparations. An administrative fee of $15 for a 90-minute practice reservation is charged. If lights are necessary, there is an additional charge of $40 per hour. Fields for rental must be appropriate for the activity and age group. Plano residents may rent a practice field once each week. Reservations can be made online after contacting athletics staff at 972-942-5413 or by email at fieldreservations@plano.gov. An account must be set up and Plano residency verified. Reservations are accepted between two and ten days in advance of the desired practice reservation. Walk-in and telephone hours are 10am to 2pm, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Recurring practice sessions are not available. Fields are provided for general public practice access after local leagues have an opportunity to schedule make-up games and practices. For additional information, contact the field reservation specialist at the email address above.

Instruction

The student/coach ratio is 4:1 for all classes ages 5-10. The ratio is 6:1 for classes ages 11 and up. To avoid cancellation of a class, a class may “make” with less than the minimum number of students, but with a reduced number of sessions. Classes at the same level and similar age groups may be combined at the discretion of High Point staff. Any group of two or more players may schedule a special class by contacting High Point staff at 972-941-7170. Group lessons are very popular and some classes fill very quickly. To assure a continuous chain of instruction, we recommend that students enroll for multiple sessions at the time of initial registration. For example, a student should enroll for a Beginner session in the first session, an Advanced Beginner I group in the second session, and an Advanced Beginner II group in the third session.

10 & Under Tennis

High Point participates year round in the QuickStart Tennis play format, a program designed to help children learn, rally, and play quickly. Using shorter and lighter racquets, balls that are easy to keep in play, and court dimensions tailored to smaller players, youngsters from ages 5-10 pick up the game very quickly. In short time, young players are able to keep the ball in play and play points just like older and more experienced players. In time, as students’ games improve and as they mature physically, they move to traditional rackets, balls, and courts. QuickStart is a great way to introduce children to the great game of tennis!

Advancement from Course to Course

We encourage players to continue learning and playing in progressively more challenging courses. The goal is to have students playing tennis (in some form) as soon as possible. As a player improves, more course time is spent on point-play like situations. For children, the instructional/play sequence is: Beginner or Pee Wee I lessons (depending on age of child), Advanced Beginner or Pee Wee II lessons, and Future Stars or Pre Junior Development (Play and Instructional Programs), Competitive, and Elite Junior Development. For teens, the sequence is Beginner, Advanced Beginner I, Advanced Beginner II, Learn N Play, Future Stars, Competitive, and Elite Junior Development. For adults, the sequence is: Beginner, Advanced Beginner, Learn and Play, High Point intra-facility leagues, Tennis Competitor of Dallas leagues, and USTA Adult Leagues.
