Good to Know Are the ACT and SAT tests becoming optional?

A

s colleges are striving to be more available to applicants from diverse backgrounds, more are moving to no longer require test results from the ACT or SAT due to the thinking that students with the means can get special tutoring to help them on these tests. Colleges want to level the playing field for applicants of all levels of means. How is this affecting enrollment of these collages who have implemented this program?

The University of Chicago, which created a stir by making these tests optional last year, reports a record enrollment this fall of first-generation, low-income and rural students and veterans. In California, both the UC and the Cal-state system are

considering a resolution to study the fairness of standardize tests in the admissions process. Who knows? Imagine a world were high school students no longer need to study or stress over these tests.

15 That’s the number in pounds of the average turkey purchased for

a Thanksgiving meal. And more than 280 million turkeys are sold for family celebrations each year, which adds up to a whole lot of leftovers to consume on Black Friday and beyond. Yum!

DID YOU KNOW that every year in

November there is a very special day to celebrate learning? Learning in subjects like science, technology, engineering, art, and math? It’s National STEAM Day on November 8th. Why choose November 8th for a day that celebrates creativity, learning, and innovation? Because it can be abbreviated NOV8, i.e. innovate :) So let’s all go innovate on November 8th. 10

Good to Know Food Allergies

F

ood allergies affect between 2-5 million kids in the US, and that number is increasing each year. Between 1997 and 2011 the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that food allergies have increased by 50%. Even if your child is not affected by food allergies, there is certainly a child in their school or daycare that is, and we all need to be aware in order to keep these young children safe. From a young age children should be made aware that they have a food allergy. Explain to them in simple terms that certain food may make them sick, and you are keeping them

Stefanie Hartman, RN, MS, CPNP Brain Injury Center Nurse Practitioner

safe by avoiding those foods. Teach them what the food looks like and show them examples in the grocery store when you shop. There are many options out there for books to read with young children who have food allergies, even some that you can personalize for your child. Let your child know that they should only eat food given to them by trusted adults and let them know who those adults are. It is important to help guide older children in how to deal with situations when people are trying to give them foods, and empower them to say “I need to ask my parent first,” when faced with a persistent person trying to share food with them.

Talk to your child about the symptoms that indicate an allergic reaction and let them know to find an adult right away if they feel sick. Tell them specifically what symptoms need to be reported and that you will give them medicine first, and then bring them to the doctors if they start having any symptoms. You should always discuss this in a calm way so your child is not nervous or fearful themselves. Food allergies cannot be prevented, but reactions can- teach your child to be their own advocate, so that both you and your child can feel safe about participation in school and camps.

Camouflaged Vaping Devices Are Getting Past Parents And Schools

T

he vaping hoodie. The vaping watch. USB jump drives. Each ready to deliver a puff of nicotine (or marijuana) anywhere, anytime. The vaping market is crowded with sleek, camouflaged devices that have teachers and parents struggling to monitor illicit usage of a product that has surged in popularity among school kids. You might want to give that new computer mouse, that you didn’t buy, a second look.

WORD WISE

N

ovember is National Adoption Month! Have you ever considered where the phrase “put up for adoption” is derived? It comes from the orphan train movement in the United States from 1854 to 1929. During this time orphans were put on trains headed for the Midwest and West. At each stop the children would be “put up” on a train platform in hopes of finding a family to adopt them. 12
