COVER STORY

May 20, 2016

By Suman Guha Mozumder hen President Barack Obama described Rutgers University in his convocation address May 15 as the “intellectual melting pot where ideas and cultures flow together”, nobody perhaps could agree more with the President than Varun Arvind, a first generation immigrant from India. Arvind, who was among the top 178 honorees in the graduating class of 2016, said that President Obama was absolutely correct because there is such great diversity at Rutgers, both culturally and intellectually. “I think this gives students a perspective on how their classes not only impact New Jersey but the U.S. and the world,” Arvind said reacting to Obama’s 20-minutesspeech, the first by a sitting president at graduation in Rutgers which is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year. About 50,000 people, including more than 10,000 students and their friends and families along with faculty members listened to Obama’s address at High Point Solutions Stadium in Piscataway, New Jersey as he spoke about the diversity in Rutgers. “Here in New Brunswick, you can debate philosophy with a classmate from South Asia in one class, and then strike up a conversation on the EE Bus with a first-generation Latina student

For Arvind, who will be attending Mount Sinai's MD/PhD MSTP in New York City, diversity is very important. “I chose mainly to go to Mount Sinai, deep in N.Y.C. because I knew from my time at Rutgers diversity is so important to me that I want to continue my education in an area that had similar diversity,” he said in response to a question. Both Parikh and Arvind were among four Rutgers students who won last year the prestigious Goldwater Scholarships that are designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Arvind said that his parents were immigrants from India and that in most institutions in the U.S. being first generation is somewhat of an abnormality, something really unique and the diversity at Rutgers not just among students but also the faculty has been very helpful despite being a first generation IndianAmerican. Pride Of Rutgers Continued from page 6 “Many of my classmates were, and not just from India but from many other countries as well. And I think because of this, students on the whole relate to each other much better and we have a much better connection to a more globalized world. I think this is one of the biggest reasons as to why so many first generation students, not only IndianAmericans, come to Rutgers,” he said in response to a question. Referring to Rutgers in his speech Obama said that America converges here. “And in so many ways, the history of Rutgers mirrors the evolution of America – the course by which we became bigger, stronger, and richer and more dynamic, and a more inclusive nation,” said.

First Lady Sports Favorite New York Designer's Creation At State Dinner or Sweden or one of the other Nordic countries being celebrated. Not that they have no designers up to the task, but because most do not have an international reputation. For an American, they are not known quantities. But perhaps, that might have been just the reason to take a risk. – The Washington Post

By Robin Givhan t could have been a teaching moment but instead it was simply a lovely one. Eschewing a dress by a designer with Nordic roots, first lady Michelle Obama wore a blush colored gown with a full skirt and asymmetrical shoulder by New York-based designer Naeem Khan. The dress, for Friday evening's Nordic state dinner, was romantic in tone and with only a hint of color. The gown harked back to the Obamas' first state dinner, in 2009, which honored India. Khan, an Indian American designer, created the glamorous champagne and silver dress for that historic occasion – one that will be remembered more for its gatecrashers than the beauty of the night. Khan is among Obama's favorites for grand occasions. (She recently wore one of his dresses when she and President Obama visited Cuba.) The mood of this dress artfully reflected the friendly relationship among the nations being welcomed to the White House, the less ornate atmosphere of the table settings and the evening's hint of springtime. President Obama, it appeared, was wearing his usual one-button tuxedo and a tidy pocket square. It would have been daring to select a designer from Denmark

Anthony Weiner And Huma Abedin Didn’t Want To See The New Documentary About His Campaign By Emily Heil

P

olitical-junkie audiences might be eager to parse the details of “Weiner,” the forthcoming documentary about the scandal-plagued 2013 campaign of former U.S. representative Anthony Weiner as he runs for mayor of New York City. The just-out trailer shows plenty of juicy behind-thescenes tidbits (the crew began filming before news broke about the Big Apple Democrat sending naughty pics to a woman who definitely wasn’t his wife, so they were able to capture the ensuing meltdown). There’s Weiner, grimacing in private moments. And his wife, top Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin, instructing

Google Research Awards For Five Stony Brook Teachers

A record-setting five faculty members, including two of Indian descent, from the Department of Computer Science in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences in Stony Brook have received prestigious Google Faculty Research Awards that support innovative research of new technologies developed by university faculty worldwide. The university announced May 3 that two of the three teachers, assistant professors Aruna Balasubramanian and Anshul Gandhi received grants for their project, ‘The Effect of Web Optimizations on Mobile Browser Performance and Power.’ Photo above, Stony Brook Computer Science faculty members receiving Google Faculty Research Awards. a campaign staffer during what looks like a tense strategy session. “Just a quick optics thing — you will look happy,” she says. But at least two insiders aren’t eager to see it: Weiner and his wife. “We offered it to them many times, but they haven’t chosen to see it,” says Lauren Schwartz, a spokeswoman for IFC, whose Sundance Selects label is distributing the film. In an interview with Larry King, Weiner explained his reticence about the movie, which he said seems to be hyping his wife’s role — something he called “a bit phony,” since Abedin did not sign off on participating. “I know how the story ends, so I’m not eager to go watch it,” he said. – The Washington Post

A health camp that included breast cancer screening for women was organized at the Swaminarayan Temple, Secaucus, New Jersey. May 7. Approximately 100 people participated in the health camp where doctors also tested blood pressure, blood glucose and collateral levels of the participants. Patients were served light breakfast at the camp that ran from 9 A.M. till 4 P.M.

Young Artist Wins U.N. Award For Poster On Peace And Nuclear Disarmament By a Staff Writer he works of an artist of Indian origin from New York, were selected out of 4,000 entries from around the world, by the United Nations for its Poster for Peace contest. The award was presented May 3 at the UN, to Anjali Chandrashekar and two other artists, whose posters will travel to several major cities. "This competition is a wonderful celebration of creativity, but it has an important purpose: to reaffirm the United Nations historic commitment to nuclear disarmament, Secretary General Ban ki Moon said in his speech at the ceremony held at the UN. It commemorates the very first General Assembly resolution, which called for the abolition of nuclear weapons. The aim of the poster competition is to raise awareness

Two Indian-Americans Among Jonas E. Salk Scholarship Winners By a Staff Writer

T

wo Indian-Americans were among eight students who were awarded the prestigious Jonas E. Salk Scholarships for medical study by the City University of New York May 10. The scholarships were given at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Midtown Manhattan in recognition of their outstanding scholarship and research on subjects, including neuroscience, cancer, genetics and molecular biology. The two Indian-origin students were Muhddesa Lakhana and Joy Patel, both from the City College of New York. Both were inspired to pursue medicine by someone in their families. Lakhana was inspired by stories about her father’s experiences as a physician in Mumbai before he immigrated to America. Often running out of basic necessities, he and other physicians still managed to

treat 60 to 70 patients a day. Lakhana gained experience volunteering at Elmhurst Hospital’s pediatric emergency room, where she witnessed the doctors’ dedication, compassion and skills. In addition to internships, she worked as a Peer Health Exchange tutor, visiting Harlem high schools and teaching ninth graders about making healthier decisions about marijuana and alcohol. The experience reinforced her interest in patient education. Patel’s decision to study medicine was inspired by his late grandfather’s commitment to helping those in need. Although he only attended school through the eighth grade, his grandfather worked hard to lay the foundation for a nonprofit hospital in the village in India where he was born. Now open for two years, the hospital serves people from nearby villages, although he didn’t live to see it. Patel, a biochemistry major, says he is also inspired by Dr. Jonas Salk, who renounced per-

sonal profit for creating the polio vaccine, and by Dr. Hunter Adams, founder of the Gesundheit Institute, which practices medicine free of charge. The Salk Scholarships recognize the high ability and scholarship of students who plan careers in medicine and the biological sciences and who are judged likely to make significant contributions to medicine and research. They are selected on the basis of original research papers undertaken with prominent scientist mentors. Salk, a 1934 City College graduate, developed the polio vaccine in 1955. He turned down a ticker-tape parade that was offered to honor his discovery, asking that New York City use the money for scholarships. The city provided initial funding for the Salk Scholarships in 1955. The endowment provides a stipend of $8,000 per scholar, to be appropriated over three or four years of medical studies to help defray medical school costs.

to spur action, "and it has been a great success," the Secretary General said. The 4,000 entries came from 123 countries. Young people were strongly represented among the entries. "Young people did not create nuclear weapons, but it may be their task to eliminate them once and for all, Ban ki Moon said, adding, "The energy and enthusi-

asm, talent and new ideas we see here today will help to meet that challenge." Others present at the awards ceremony included President of the General Assembly Mogens Lykketoft and actor Michael Douglas, the UN Messenger of Peace. On her Facebook page, Chandrashekar said she had submitted her entries at the beginning of the year and two of them were chosen for the U.N. campaign. The posters will be exhibited in New York, Geneva and Vienna. "While this night is one I will cherish forever it also restored my belief in the power art has to humanize some of the most pressing issues the world faces today," Chandrashekar said on her website. "My journey in activism has been a long and exciting one," she said, "While we are ways away from achieving this tremendously difficult challenge, I believe that #peaceispossible and that art can speak a universal language by creating awareness and hope for a better future!" "An aspiring industrial designer with passion for painting and sculpture. Made with Indian ink and experimenting with New York as my canvas," Chandrashekar describes herself and her medium.

Muslim Ban Was ‘Just A Suggestion,’ Says Trump –WASHINGTON epublican party's presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump has demoted his proposed Muslim immigration ban to a mere “suggestion”. In a radio interview with Fox News' May 11 Trump softened his call to temporarily prohibit Muslims from entering the U.S. “We have a serious problem. It’s a temporary ban. It hasn’t been called for yet. Nobody has done it. This is just a suggestion until we find out what’s going on,” Trump said. But Trump did not mince words in linking Muslims to the proliferation of terrorism around the world, Politico reported. “We have radical Islamic terrorism all over the world. You can go to Paris, you can go to San Bernardino, all over the world: If they want to deny it, they can deny it. I don’t choose to deny it,” he said. Trump’s comments came a day after he claimed he would make an “exception” for London’s first

Muslim mayor, Sadiq Khan, to enter the U.S. “There will always be exceptions,” he told The New York Times May 10, while adding he was happy Khan was elected in the city. Khan was not impressed with Trump’s gesture, saying that the Manhattan billionaire was “ignorant” about Islam and that he hoped he would lose the US election. Trump has often given conflicting accounts on issues including his tax plan, abortion and transgender people accessing public toilets. This flexibility has led to concerns among Republican Party leaders about his candidacy. Top Republicans including House Speaker Paul Ryan have said they were not ready to support Trump in the general election. Trump will meet Senator Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Ryan and others on Thursday in an attempt to resolve differences. – IANS

Factionalism In INOC Surfaces During Punjab Leader’s N.Y. Visit By a Staff Writer ormer Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh was in town last week, addressing a huge gathering of expatriate Punjabis at the Hilton Hotel in Melville, New York, during which he sought to assure the audience that Punjab will once again witness prosperity and better governance if the Congress party is elected to power in the elections slated for next year. Singh, who is also Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president, said that the NRI's have a very special place in his heart and that he will have separate department in the chief minister's office that will help with issues that the NRIs face. The state is currently ruled by an Akali-BJP government, which Singh claimed has failed on almost every front. Singh, who was on a tour of North America, had earlier visited Chicago where he launched a frontal attack on the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), while addressing a gathering of Congress party supporters, saying nothing much can

Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh addressing a meeting organized “under the aegis of Punjabi NRIs of U.S. and supported by the Indian National Overseas Congress” at the Hilton Hotel in Melville, New York, May 7. be expected from the new party as it has yet to prove its worth. Singh also raised the issue of AAP in New York, warning the gathering May 7 that Punjabis should alert about AAP that will contest the Punjab elections as the Delhi government led by AAP has gone down, and if they adopt their “failed policies and practices” in Punjab, the state will collapse. The visit of Singh, who was given a rousing reception in New York by the members of the

Punjabi community, however, brought to fore the division within the Indian National Overseas Congress that organized the meeting in association with various community organizations. The two groups, one led by its president Lavika Bhagat Singh and known as INOC (I) and another headed by Mohinder Singh Gilzian known as INOC issued two separate media releases on the same event with the former claiming that the event was organized by them and the other

saying the meeting was organized “under the aegis of Punjabi NRIs of U.S. and that the Indian National Overseas Congress, USA, headed by Mohinder Singh Gilzian, supported the event. “Capt. Amarinder Singh expressed deep appreciation for the hard work the group was doing, especially in bringing the community together and encouraged Mohinder Singh Gilzian to continue with his good work,” one press release said. The other group led by Lavika

Bhagat Singh mentioned in the press release that Capt. Singh “acknowledged the hard work put by the Indian National Overseas Congress and also recognized the president Lavika Bhagat Singh.” Both the groups agreed on one issue – that the event was attended by a “large number of people” with one group pegging the number at over 2,000. One INOC official admitted that there indeed are two factions within the INOC, something that cannot be denied. “I have to admit that there are factions within the INOC and it is high time the party high command intervenes and bring an end to this issue once and for all,” George Abraham, chairman of what is known as the “original INOC” and led by its president Mohinder Singh Gilzian, told this correspondent. The other group led by Lavika Bhagat Singh could not be reached for comments at press time. The INOC (I) broke away from INOC some four years ago, and since then there has been claims and counter-claims as to which one of the two groups represents India’s grand old party in the U.S.

Right-wing Hindu Group In India Prays For Trump To Win By Annie Gowen

D

onald Trump may have made fun of India’s call center workers and accused the country of stealing U.S. jobs but he still has fans in India. About a dozen members of a right-wing Hindu group gathered on New Delhi’s “protest lane” Wednesday to pray that Trump will win the U.S. presidential election, according to the Associated Press. The group chanted in Sanskrit and make offerings around a small ritual fire and before a picture of the billionaire politician adorned with a red Hindu mark on the forehead. Trump’s call for temporarily banning Muslims from the United States “until we can figure out what’s going on” apparently a positive chord with some in India’s Hindu nationalist movement, the report said. “The whole world is screaming against Islamic terrorism, and even India is not safe from it,” said Vishnu Gupta, founder of the Hindu Sena nationalist group. “Only Donald Trump can save humanity.” A separate movement of “Hindus for Trump” has also been gaining speed on Twitter and Facebook in recent days. In months on the campaign trail, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee has made several statements about India

both positive and negative. He described the country as a necessary check to nuclear-armed Pakistan but also mentioned India of being among several countries he believes are stealing jobs from the United States “We’re being ripped off with China, ripped off with Japan, ripped off with Mexico at the border and then trade, ripped off by Vietnam, and by India, and by every country,” Trump said at a rally in February. In a speech in Delaware last month, he mimicked the accent of an Indian call center worker in a speech about the trade imbalance and the job market, later adding –“India is a great place.” – The Washington Post

Mired In Controversy, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Tries To Set The Record Straight By Max Bearak wo weeks ago, I wrote a story about a worldfamous Indian guru — the founder of the massively popular Art of Living Foundation — who had stepped into controversy three times in quick succession after a quiet rise to international prominence. On that weekend, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (whose doubly honorific title is reserved for the very few) gave a news conference to Indian reporters who baited him with questions about his deserving the Nobel Peace Prize. I’d seen a video of the back-and-forth and was surprised to see Sri Sri in such a combative mood. After all, he is known as a purveyor of inner serenity. “She didn’t do anything to deserve it,” he said of Malala Yousafzai’s Nobel win in one moment of sass, after calling the awarding of prizes “political.” Yousafzai, who was a teenager when she won the prize, had spent years advocating for girls’ right to an education in Pakistan’s Swat Valley, risking her life in the process. Weeks earlier, Sri Sri had created waves by reaching out to the Islamic State militant group by way of a news release from one of his ayurvedic health centers in Irbil, Iraq, only to receive a picture of a beheaded man in response. Last week, Sri Sri surprised me again when he reached out through a PR agent based in Orlando (though I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised, given the marketing I’ve seen of his ayurvedic personal care and nutritional products). The agent said that Sri Sri wanted to set the record straight and that he had been misquoted, particularly in the Indian media. I thought this might be an opportunity to get clarity from a man whose philosophy is centered on bringing clarity and happiness to others. “Namaskar, Guru ji,” I said, greeting him, when the agent got us on the conference call. “And happy birthday.” By coincidence, it happened to be Sri Sri’s 60th. “I had a big cake,” he said. After hearing about his visit to the drought-hit Indian state of Maharashtra — where he gave the news conference referenced above — I asked him to explain how he thought his words had been twisted in the media. “All that I’ve been saying is that all this work I do is not for any prizes but because it is my passion. That’s all I’m saying. I have respect for all those others who have won prizes,” he said. “There have just been some misquotes, that’s all.” And he did mean actual misquotes, even though the interac-

T

tion was filmed. I was especially interested in whether he had been offered a Nobel — only to have rejected it, as he seemed to imply in the video. “Specifically,” I said, “I think people are interested by two quotes from your press conference in Maharashtra. In one of them, you say, Hamare paas pehle kuch log aaye the, aur uske baad humne kaha, ‘Rajneeti, usme padenge nahi’ (earlier some people had come to us, and after that, we said that ‘we won’t go into those politics’), seeming to refer to people him offering a Nobel. Who were these people?” Said Sri Sri, “No, you see, some people said you have to get the prize and do some lobbying and all, and I said no, no, I’m not interested in any of that. Because I’m not doing the work for any prize. I’m doing it because it’s my passion. I’ve been misquoted actually.” The question of whether the Art of Living Foundation, or people associated with it, lobbied for Sri Sri to get a Nobel is actually quite fraught. In April 2010, an anonymous “whistleblower” alleged in a blog that an entire team of people was aggressively mobilized, with Sri Sri’s blessing, to get as many prominent public figures as possible to nominate him for the award. The post contains emails that are supposedly copied verbatim by someone who

was privy to the “project.” A post two years later says that the blog was frozen after an injunction by a U.S. court on behalf of the Art of Living Foundation. I told Sri Sri that misquotes usually mean that you’ve been attributed words you didn’t say. He said that his words were warped and that he means no disrespect toward any award winners. In much of the rest of the interview, Sri Sri went on to describe his radically simple yet optimistic philosophy, centered on stress relief. He used the words “harmony,” “diversity,” “stress” and “happiness” at least half a dozen times each. “The root cause of violence is stress. Until you can teach someone how to relieve themselves of stress and gain harmony with themselves, you cannot expect a very nonviolent or harmonious atmosphere around them. Family violence and violence need to be

eliminated, and the root cause of all that is stress,” he explained, when asked about his work promoting world peace. “No one teaches us in school how to get rid of stress even though it is completely normal to have stress. My main mission is to relieve people from stress and bring happiness into their lives. We bring together communities and encourage diversity everywhere — to come together in a sense of celebration.” That bright message was similar to the one he said resonated at a recent interfaith conference in New Delhi, which was even graced with the presence of Syria’s grand mufti. “Syria today is the most troubled part of the world. So we invited him to share his feelings and his experience,” Sri Sri said. “He gave us a new taste of what could be a better world, or society, in harmony and celebration.” The words kind of blend into

one another, like watercolors. Veering back toward his relationship with the media, I wondered aloud whether he thought the media could be trusted. He said that until the controversies, yes, but then the PR agent jumped in and diverted us toward a conversation about stress relief for those in the United States who face inner-city violence. And then a member of the Art of Living Foundation’s media relations staff elaborated on Sri Sri’s exclusive breathing technique, Sudarshan Kriya, which apparently reduces stress and increases happiness. Sri Sri will be traveling to the United States to introduce Sudarshan Kriya, starting in Washington on June 24, and traveling to seven other cities, including the Art of Living International Center in Boone, N.C. Sri Sri suggested I look at a PDF about the inner-city work. And in case I hadn’t achieved clarity on his trust or mistrust of the media, Sri Sri added, “The mistrust is because we don’t feel connected with people, you see? And stress is again the root cause of that. When we know how to relieve our stresses, our approach, our observation, our expression … all changes. You get more clarity, you are more calm and more serene in your observation, your expression, and that helps one to get over the stress and mistrust.” – The Washington Post

Apple Boss To Tap Indian Software Talent During Maiden Visit By Himank Sharma and Rupam Jain

A

pple Inc (AAPL.O) is set to announce plans to expand its Indian software development centre and build an accelerator programme for local start-ups, two sources aware of the investment said on Tuesday, hours before Chief Executive Tim Cook’s maiden visit. Cook, who arrives in India late on Tuesday, is making his Indian debut just as the country emerges as one of the last large growth markets in the smartphone world, while sales in the United States and China begin to taper off. Among other officials, he is due to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later in the week. Over 100 million smartphones were sold in India last year, a number that is expected

to grow by 25 percent this year. Sales of Apple’s iPhones which have a two percent market share in the country - grew 56 percent in the first three months of 2016. Earlier this year, Apple opened a development centre in Hyderabad, also home to Microsoft’s first India office, where engineers are working on Apple Maps. The sources did not detail

the size of the fresh investment. The company is also expected to announce plans for a startup accelerator in India to work more closely with the Indian developer community that works on Apple’s iOS and OS X software platforms, one of the sources said. An Apple spokesman declined to comment. “Cook’s visit shows how

important India has become for Apple and will likely set the stage for the expansion of Apple ecosystem in India,” said Vishal Tripathi, research director at Gartner. Indian government sources said Modi is likely to press Cook to set up production facilities in India, as part of the government’s plan to find jobs for millions of Indians joining the workforce every year. Apple is in separate talks to open its first official retail store in the world’s third-largest smartphone market. Cook’s India visit, which one of the sources said could run into the weekend, also includes meetings with industry partners. On May 20, Cook is expected to meet Sunil Mittal, the billionaire founder of India’s biggest mobile operator Bharti Airtel (BRTI.NS), a separate source said. – Reuters

Exit Polls Give Bengal To Mamata, Assam To BJP, Tamil Nadu To DMK – NEW DELHI xit polls at the end of fivestate elections on Monday evening predicted a Trinamool sweep in West Bengal, a BJP win in Assam, a Left victory in Kerala but the verdict was split over Tamil Nadu, with advantage to the DMK. The DMK was also tipped to win in Puducherry. In the biggest popularity test since the Lok Sabha polls of 2014, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appeared poised to win in Assam for the first time, ending 15 long years of Congress rule. BJP leaders had admitted even before the start of the staggered elections last month that the party’s best chances lay in Assam. The BJP-led alliance could bag 79 to 93 seats in the 126-member Assam assembly, three exit polls said. A fourth survey gave the BJP and its two allies - Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) - 57 seats, close to the critical half-way mark. The India Today-Axis exit poll gave 79-93 seats to the BJP combine, 26-33 to the Congress and 6-10 to the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). ABP-Nielsen predicted 81 seats to the BJP coalition, 33 to the Congress and 10 to the AIUDF. The NewsX Chanakya poll gave 90 seats to the BJP combine,

T

he body of former U.S. embassy employee Leena Sharma, who was missing for some days, was found buried in a jungle in this Madhya Pradesh district May 13 police said. Three people, including her uncle, have been arrested in this connection. Police said that her murder seemed to be over a dispute about her ancestral property in Sohagpur area. Sharma, who is based in Delhi, had come here to inspect the property but had gone missing subsequently, subdivisional police officer Anurag Uike told IANS. He said police received information that a female corpse had been found in Kamti jungle area and on investigating, found Sharma’s body buried in the ground and urea and salt added to the spot so that the body decomposes fast. Her maternal uncle Pradeep Sharma, and his two servants Rajesh and Gorelal have been arrested and the body sent for autopsy, Uike said. – IANS

27 to the Congress and nine to the AIUDF. According to TimesNow C-Voter exit poll, the BJP and allies would get 57 seats, the Congress 41, AIUDF 18 and others 10. In West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was set to retain power with a slightly reduced majority. According to ABP-Nielsen, the Trinamool would win 163 of the 294 assembly seats. The CPI-Mled Left Front and the Congress combine would get 126 with a solitary seat going to the BJP. Others would get four seats. But it warned that in 25 constituencies the margin of victory was set to be less than five percent, and the final outcome could drastically change depending on the results in these seats. C-Voter also predicted 167 seats for the Trinamool, 75 for the Left, 45 for the Congress, four to the BJP and three to others. NewsX-Today’s Chanakya predicted a whopping 210 (plus or minus 14) seats for the Trinamool, 70 (plus or minus nine) for the Left-Congress and 14 (plus or minus five) seats for the BJP. The exit polls were divided over Tamil Nadu. Three surveys predicted a defeat for Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa’s AIADMK. But a fourth said she would retain

power comfortably, winning 139 of the 234 seats. The News Nation TV exit poll gave 95-99 seats to the AIADMK and 114-118 to the DMKCongress alliance. The People Welfare Front (PWF), made up of six parties, could get 14 seats and the BJP four seats. Nine seats could go to others. The Axis-My India exit poll predicted 124-140 seats to the DMK-Congress alliance, 89-110 to the AIADMK, 0-3 to the BJP and 4-8 to others.

NewsX-Today’s Chanakya predicted that DMK-Congress alliance would get 140 (plus or minus 11) seats and AIADMK winning 90 (plus or minus) nine seats. C-Voter, however, gave 139 seats to the AIADMK and 78 to the DMK coalition. In Kerala, however, the Left could return to power. The India Today-Axis exit poll gave 88 to 101 seats to the Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the 140-member house and 38-48 to

the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). The BJP could get zero to three seats while one to four seats may go to others. The India TV C-Voter exit poll predicted 74-82 seats to the LDF, which is led by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M). The NewsX-Today’s Chanakya poll predicted 75 (plus or minus nine) seats for LDF and 57 (plus or minus nine) seats for the UDF. The BJP, it said, could get 8 (plus or minus four seats). – IANS

Indian Woman Dubbed ‘The Face Of Hindu Terror’ To Walk Free By Rama Lakshmi – NEW DELHI ndia’s national investigation agency May 13 dropped all terror-related charges against a female Hindu activist jailed in connection with a bomb explosion in a Muslim neighborhood in 2008. The National Investigation Agency recommended that all charges be dropped against Pragya Singh – a self-styled Hindu holy woman – and three others because of lack of evidence. The move overturns earlier police findings and closes a chapter in one of the most contentious terrorism cases in the past decade in India. Singh and three others were arrested for being behind a September 2008 motorcycle bomb explosion in the town of Malegaon in the western state of Maharashtra. The blast, which occurred during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, killed six people and injured more than 100. Singh’s arrest was controversial because it was the first time that Hindus had been named in a terror case in India. It fueled a sharp political

I

debate and angered many Hindus who accused the previous Congress Party-led coalition government of tarnishing the image of their community. “The National Investigation Agency has said that there is no evidence to prosecute the four accused, including Pragya Singh,” her lawyer Sanjeev Punalekar told reporters in Mumbai. “There had been grave injustice done to them all these years.” The agency also dropped the organized crime charge against one of the other prominent figures in the case, a Hindu army colonel, Srikant Purohit, who remains behind bars on charges he provided the explosives and training to the bombers. Indian media at that time had called Singh and Purohit “the face of ‘Hindu terror,’ “ a phrase that many Hindus objected to. “Those who called it ‘Hindu terror’ committed a great sin,” said Indresh Kumar, a member of India’s largest and most strident Hindu nationalist organization, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. The group is closely affiliated with the political party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Randeep Singh Surjewala, the spokesman for the Congress Party, which was in power at the time of Singh’s arrest, said the overturning of the charges “has shocked the collective conscience of the nation” and accused the Modi government of “blatant disre-

www.desitalk.com – that’s all you need to know

gard and misuse” of the investigation agency. Investigators, however, denied charges of political interference. “We have completed the investigation. Whatever evidence and questions came up in that process, we have presented today,” said Sharad Kumar, the director general of the National Investigation Agency. In response to reporters’ questions, he denied he was undermining the earlier police investigation. Police in 2008 had focused on Singh after forensic analysis revealed that the motorcycle used in the bombing had belonged to her. But her lawyer had argued that she had given it away many years ago. In June last year, the case’s special public prosecutor, Rohini Salian, said that she was “under pressure” from the investigation agency to go easy in the case. On Friday, senior Congress Party leader Digvijaya Singh said “it was a matter of shame” that Modi’s government was “trying to protect those who were clearly involved in terror related activities.” – The Washington Post

Indian TV Content Today A Huge Sign Of Worry: Prachi Desai By Kishori Sud – NEW DELHI hows that are progressive in outlook are the need of the hour on Indian television, says actress Prachi Desai, who feels the content on the far-reaching medium is in a dismal state of affairs. Prachi moved into the film world after successfully establishing her name with a lead role as Bani in the once-popular daily soap “Kasamh Se”, which dealt with the trials and tribulations of three sisters. With no immediate plans to return to the small screen medium for a fiction show, Prachi told

S

actress said: “Trend is a pattern with everything -- be it fashion or cinema. Everyone wants to dabble in that until it reaches its saturation point. I am extremely happy about the trend. I think human stories are always interesting. Each life has a story, each human has a different story.” She feels that the biopic trend should go on for a longer time. – IANS

IANS in an interview: “Honestly, (Indian) television right now makes me really sad. It is a huge sign of worry.” “Looking at where the country is going and the things that are happening around us, we should open our eyes and give content to the people accordingly. I am not saying that the medium is a social service, but TV impacts so many people on so many different levels, in a huge way,” she added. The 27-year-old actress, whose latest Bollywood release is “Azhar”, strongly believes that since TV caters to a huge audience, “we definitely need way better content and not content which is so regressive and just so shocking at every level”.

“We need to improve so much... Years ago, we used to have way more advanced shows in terms of outlook and relatability,” added the “Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai” actress. Having played roles featuring her in a mature and calm demeanor in most of her films and in her debut TV show too, Prachi says that she has no idea why this stereotyping happened. In fact, she would love to be cast in more fun roles. “Ask my directors why they give me such roles! I honestly have no idea myself. I am completely opposite. My roles are

beyond my age too. “On one hand, I should be happy that inspite of not being this person in reality, I am able to bring such maturity in my roles, but at the same time I should be having a lot more fun, closer to my age... Pair me up with younger actors who do more youth-based films,” she said. In “Azhar”, which narrates the highs and lows of Mohammad Azharuddin’s life for most of the 1990s, Prachi essays the first wife of India’s former cricket captain. Asked if the trend of biopics is becoming an overdose for the audiences, the “Bol Bachchan”

Negative Roles Don’t Come Naturally To Me: Shaheer Sheikh –NEW DELHI ctor Shaheer Sheikh believes that his face is not suitable for playing negative characters. He says such roles don’t come naturally to him. “Negative roles don’t come naturally to me. I have tried to do it. I once auditioned for a negative character. They just said that I don’t look that bad. My face doesn’t suit that. But I would love to play (a negative role) if given a chance, as I like to experiment,” Shaheer told IANS. Shaheer, who rose to fame through his portrayal of Arjun in “Mahabharat” aired on Star Plus, feels doing a mythological show is “tougher” than doing daily soaps. “I feel daily soap is the most difficult form of acting and mythological is tougher than that. Arjun was the most difficult char-

A

acter that I have played,” he said. “It’s really challenging doing a mythological show. Challenging... not in terms of costumes, but in terms of language and the way in which you have to maintain that aura of the character,” he added. Asked whether he would like to do a reality show, Shaheer, who hosted a few Indonesian TV shows including “Asia’s Got Talent”, said: “I’m not that kind of a person who would love to live with 15 to 20 people in a strange house. I was offered a few other shows too when I was in Indonesia, but because of time constraint, I couldn’t do it. Maybe, I would like to do some dancebased show in the future”. Shaheer is currently seen in “Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi”, which is being aired on Sony Entertainment Television. – IANS

–MUMBAI ce choreographer Terence Lewis, who is currently co-judging the reality dance show “So You Think You Can Dance Ab India Ki Baari” with Madhuri Dixit, says the dancing diva and actress “is trying to learn technicality of dance”. As the format of the TV show is stage dancing vs street dancing, Lewis taught Madhuri a few technicalities which are involved in back flips and cross hits. “Madhuri loves to learn, she is an avid learner of dance. She wants to know everything about other dance styles and I love that quality. I love sharing my knowledge. “She is trying to learn technicality of dance and that’s really kind of her. Now the audience is also educated in dance these days so it’s really important as judges we know all of it,” Lewis said in a statement. “So You Think You Can Dance ‘Ab India Ki Baari” is aired on &TV. – IANS

JUNE 2016 VISA BULLETIN ANNOUNCES SIGNIFICANT RETROGRESSION FOR INDIA AND CHINA

By: Michael Phulwani, Esq., David H. Nachman, Esq. and Rabindra K. Singh, Esq.

T

he Department of State’s June 2016 Visa Bulletin has announced major retrogression in the Final Action cut off dates for India and China. Specifically, in June 2016, India EB2 Final Action cutoff date will retrogress to Octo ber 1, 2004, for the final issuance of immi grant visas. The India EB2 Final Action cutoff date stood at November 22, 2008, in the May 2016 visa bulletin. Thus, India EB 2 Final Action cutoff date will retrogress by more than four (4) years in June 2016. India EB3 will continue to move at the snail’s pace. The Final Action cutoff date for EB3 India will move from September 1, 2004 to September 22, 2004. Similar to India, EB2 Final Action cutoff for China will retrogress by 20 months to January 1st 2010 in June 2016. Like EB2, in June 2016, EB3 China Final Action cutoff will also retrogress from current August 15, 2013, to January 1, 2010. The DOS has cited “extremely high levels of Employmentbased demand for adjust ment of status cases filed with USCIS dur ing past two (2) months” as the reason for retrogression of the EB2 preference Final Action cutoff dates for India and China.

ect a bullish forward movement in the im mediate future for both India and China EB2 and EB3 preference categories. EB2 India Final Action cutoff date is expected to advance slowly, at a pace consistent with that of the India EB3 preference cut off date, during the last three (3) months of the fiscal year. The projection is much worse for the Chinese nationals as the ret rogressed Final Action cutoff is not likely to advance either in the EB2 or EB3 cate gory.

Like the EB2 preference category, Final Action cutoff date for the FB4 category for both India and China will also ret rogress in June 2016. India FB4 Final Ac tion cutoff will backward from present July 22, 2003, to January 1, 2001. Likewise, China FB4 will retrogress from July 22, 2003, to January 1, 2003. While DOS is not in a position to project whether or not the China FB4 will advance until the end of current fiscal year, it is almost certain that India FB4 will not advance during the last quarter. For the reference of readers, included below is the Final Action Date Chart per the June 2016 visa bulletin for the employ mentbased preference cases and family sponsored preference cases.

TRAVEL

AROUND THE WORLD IN 20 DAYS Ever dream about visiting seven countries in one trip? Join us on our 21,623-mile adventure. By Andrea Sachs

Day 1 Reykjavik, Iceland Neither one of us mentioned the S-word. We had only 24 hours in Reykjavik; we could sleep on the morning flight to Stockholm. On the island, Jabin and I moved like the Icelandic wind that could seemingly push the Nordic country closer to Greenland. About an hour after arriving on the redeye, a nearly six-hour flight from Dulles, we were bouncing along toward the Golden Circle, the nearly 200-mile loop that bubbles, spews and sprays with geologic features. The route provides layover lubbers like us with an alternative to the 830-mile Ring Road, which demands at least a week of your devotion. With foggy heads and clear skies, we hiked down to the first attraction on the route, Kerio, a volcanic crater lake that is a mere baby at 3,000 years old. The gravely path down to the caldera felt like shifting coffee grinds underfoot. I fell more on that short walk than I had over the past two winters. Fortunately, the landing was soft and silly. I also wasn’t the only tumbler in the crowd. A mom created a human chain with her young son, who eventually lost to gravity. Thankfully, the sliding stopped just shy of the shore; one false step into the icy water and you’re an instant Popsicle Days 2-4 Stockholm, Sweden When I walk into an H&M store in the States, I often wonder whether Swedes also shop there. The global clothing chain’s birth certificate reads “Vasteras, Sweden,” after all. Soon after landing in our second aroundthe-world destination, a nearly three-hour flight from Iceland, I set out to learn the truth. Inside the mall-size store in central Stockholm, I feigned interest in tribal prints to eavesdrop on others’ accents. I left with my answer (yes, they do have them) plus a pair of $10 tassel earrings that disproved the notion that Sweden is ridiculously expensive. Stockholm is a cosmopolitan city on par with other Western greats. Locals dress in the urban uniform of black-on-black and shame monolinguists by slipping seamlessly into English. But Swedes also embrace traditions that I had assumed were unsanctioned stereotypes but turned out to be truths. Days 5-7 Antananarivo, Madagascar How badly did we want to see lemurs? So badly that we spent nearly 24 hours traveling from Stockholm to Madagascar, testing our resolve through one red-eye, two layovers (Paris, the Seychelles) and four semi-edible airplane meals (among the dishes: a greasy egg-roll-meets-burrito snack paired with fruit salad, ratatouille and rice with a creamy carrot salad, and lots of vacuum-sealed bread). That we clocked more than five hours in a car that corkscrewed along twisty roads crowded with trucks, parading children, crayfish vendors and carts drawn by zebu, the local cattle. That we sacrificed much-needed sleep by rising early for day hikes to view

the diurnal lemurs and staying up late (in jet-lag hours) for night walks to see the nocturnal residents. (Our solution to the lack of zzzs: snoozing during every car ride, no matter the length of the drive.) We also braved leeches, malarial mosquitoes and giant spider webs that hung like lace curtains in the rainforest. All for a primate. But lemurs aren’t just any animal, and Madagascar isn’t just any African country. The island off the eastern coast is home to all of the wild lemurs in the world — 105 species. And they are nearly everywhere. Days 8-11 Mahe, Seychelles It was inevitable. We were going to experience a glitch — or depending on who’s telling the story, a major screw-up. For the first three countries, we glided through our itinerary with the greatest of ease. Our only delay lasted barely an hour, and the aircraft ended up leaving Stockholm before the estimated departure time posted on the overhead screen. My blood pressure didn’t even have a chance to rise. And then we arrived in the Seychelles. A little background info: We had planned an outing from Mahe, the largest island in the East African archipelago and our home base, to Praslin, a nearby isle with a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The agent in the States told us to be ready for an 8 a.m. pickup; a representative at the Seychelles airport said the driver would come at 9. After processing the schedule change, I flashed Jabin an ecstatic expression usually affiliated with winning the lottery. Our Powerball ticket number: an extra hour of sleep. Days 12-14 Mumbai, India I knew that we had been making serious headway around the world when I started to recognize the pilots’ names (why, it’s captain Patrick of Air Seychelles again), stopped calculating the time change (I set my clock to “Now”) and was close to memorizing my passport number (448*******). Another sign: At our next destination, the top item on our laundry list of activities was actually doing laundry. Before departing Washington, Jabin and I had agreed to pack light, so that we could avoid checking bags. We hoped that our limited but thoughtful choices would carry us through the extreme poles of the thermometer — the layer-to-strip approach. But dirt, sweat and lemur licks happen. We had planned to wash our clothes in the Seychelles, until we learned that the nearest facility was on a different island. By the time we reached Mumbai, after a nearly five-hour flight, we were desperate for a washer and dryer. Jabin was surviving on two sets of underwear and socks, a white T-shirt and one pair of shorts. I was trying to protect three clean dresses from being contaminated by shorts covered in red mud and brambles, a skirt encrusted with the salt of the Indian Ocean and a bathing suit smelling of sulphur. Next stop: Singapore.

Neena Gupta, Rajit Kapoor Win At NYIFF 2016 – NEW DELHI ctors Neena Gupta and Rajit Kapoor were honoured with the Best Actress and Actor award at the 16th annual New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) for their roles in “The Threshold”. Directed by Pushan Kripalani, “The Threshold” was screened at the festival on Friday. Neena took to Twitter on Sunday to share the news. “Me and Rajit Kapoor won best actors for our film ‘The Threshold’ in Newport,” Neena tweeted alongside a photograph of their trophies. The film details one day in the life of a north Indian couple who have been married for over two decades. Veteran actor Anupam Kher congratulated Neena and Rajit. “Congratulations Neena Gupta for winning the Best Actress award for your film ‘The Threshold’,” he wrote. The festival, which concluded on Saturday with the screening of Hansal Mehta’s “Aligarh”, screens feature, documentary and short films made from, of and about the Indian subcontinent in the independent, art-house, alternate and diaspora genres every year.

– NEW DELHI ohammad Azharuddin, the cricketer on whose life Tony D’Souza’s “Azhar” is based, struck a hundred in his first three test matches. It was a glorious start to a fairly successful career – until his implication in a matchfixing scandal and a lifetime ban from the cricket pitch. Unlike the man himself, the movie does not impress for any stretch of time. It slips out of control from the opening scene, in which disgruntled cricketer Manoj (a clear reference to Manoj Prabhakar, the player who accused Azharuddin and others of throwing matches in the late 1990s) caricaturishly plots a sting operation. Then you have shots of the titular character smashing fours and sixes around the cricket ground, with embarrassingly fake images of crowds cheering in the background. These shots are spliced with scenes to establish Azhar’s power, status and influence – you see the man stepping out of expensive cars, posing for the camera, and being surrounded by people either fawning or expressing envy. All this right after (or before – it’s hard to keep track sometimes) a cricket board member makes allegations against him and shames him with unabashed theatricality. The first 20 minutes of “Azhar” establish a pattern of success and failure, highs and lows, heartbreaking losses and thumping wins in quick succession. As if the title of the movie wasn’t enough, the director goes the extra mile to show exactly whose side he is on in the sordid match-fixing saga. The film’s makers throw their weight behind Azharuddin, portraying him as someone more wronged than wrong, a man of immense talent and mostly steady morals who was simply a victim of bad circumstances and people far more wicked than him. It looks a bit ridiculous because almost as a matter of rule, Azhar chooses the exact opposite of the morally sound choice right after delivering sermons to others – choices that range from starting an extra-marital affair, accepting a bribe, and throwing matches. There’s a distinct feeling of things being rushed, as if the movie had a lot to tell but not enough time. From Azharuddin’s early life and the way his maternal grandfather influenced his early years to his arrival in Mumbai and his selection in the national team – everything is represented with flashy montages, tacky dialogue and an ear-splitting background score. The narrative jumps back and

too much to ask. Prachi Desai is convincing as the cricketer’s selfless first wife Naureen, who never leaves her husband’s side despite being rejected by him in the most public way possible. Lara Datta looks confident as the career-driven, no-nonsense prosecution lawyer. Aditya Roy Kapoor hams and overacts as Azharuddin’s friend and counsel. His wig and the fake bald patch may distract some viewers. Nargis Fakhri looks radiant as Sangeeta, Azharuddin’s second wife. Good scenes are few and far in between. I enjoyed the part where Azharuddin’s mother tells him to get married, right up to his first interaction with Naureen. “Azhar” is an unmitigated disaster only because of its relentless idolization of an obviously flawed man. A more subtle, honest and casual admission of the cricketer’s repeated lapses in judgments would perhaps have made him look less greedy, and more deserving of sympathy and forgiveness. – Reuters

Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Raman Raghav 2.0′ Premieres At Cannes By Shilpa Jamkhandikar – NEW DELHI Bollywood film based on a real-life serial killer who preyed on victims living on the streets of Mumbai premiered at a sidebar event of the Cannes film festival on Monday. “Raman Raghav 2.0,” director Anurag Kashyap’s fictionalized retelling of a series of murders, features Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the killer and Vicky Kaushal as the police officer chasing him. “First screening has begun. House is packed,” Kashyap tweeted as the non-competitive Director’s Fortnight screening got under way on the sidelines of the 69th Cannes film festival. Raman Raghav is said to have bludgeoned over 40 victims to death in the 1960s in apparently motiveless murders. “No killing is without reason. Even if the reason doesn’t seem

A

justified to us, the killer justifies it in his head,” Siddiqui, who plays the serial killer in the film, told Reuters over the telephone. “In my reading, Raman Raghav lived in his own world, where his actions were justified, and that is how I have tried to play him.” In Kashyap’s modern-day retelling, the story turns into a battle between the serial killer

and a troubled police officer. Kaushal, who plays the police officer, described “Raman Raghav 2.0 as a crime thriller. This is Kashyap’s third outing at the Director’s Fortnight. Both “Gangs of Wasseypur” and “Ugly” were also screened at the Cannes sidebar. Indian film-makers have been bitten by the reality bug, and

many movie studios are backing scripts based on real-life events — with some cinematic liberties. This year, Bollywood will release biopics of cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni, an Indian man who died in a Pakistani prison, and wrestler Mahavir Phogat who coached his daughters to wrestling glory. “Azhar,” based on the life of former cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin, opened in cinemas this month. Raja

Krishna Menon’s “Airlift” and Ram Madhvani’s “Neerja”, both based on real-life incidents, were successful at the box office earlier this year. “We are filling our movies with real-life characters, but you cannot do it as you please,” said Siddiqui. “We need to focus on body language, their speech – we need to make it closer to reality. But it is good that we are telling these stories finally.” – Reuters

The Department manages 12 inmate facilities, 9 of which are located on Rikers Island. In addition, the Department operates two hospital Prison Wards (Bellevue and Elmhurst hospitals) and court holding facilities in Criminal, Supreme, and Family Court in each borough.

As the Department celebrates 120 years of serving the City of New York, the career fair provides an unprecedented opportunity to match talented New Yorkers with open roles. Originally intended for veterans, activeduty military personnel and their spouses, this event is now open to all persons interested in a career at the Department of Correction. Military or NY State ID is required for entry.

we can use your skills. Each staff member plays a pivotal role in helping the Department run seamlessly. We are recruiting the most qualified and dedicated candidates for our team.”

During Fiscal Year 2015, the Department handled over 67,000 admissions and managed an average daily inmate population of approximately 10,240 individuals.

MAYOR’S OFFICE OF IMMIGRANT AFFAIRS APPLAUDS BOARD OF REGENTS DECISION TO GRANT PROFESSIONAL LICENSES TO DACA RECIPIENTS ew York State immigrants who have been granted Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) deserve the opportunity to pursue their professional ambitions. Today the Board of Regents took an important step to ensure that DACA recipients can live their dreams. By providing a clear pathway for qualified DACA recipients to become teachers, pharmacists, doctors, nurses, and more, the Board of Regents has created positive change for New York State.

This rule is good for New York City: it will increase the number and diversity of people engaged in vital professions such as education and health care, and it will benefit our economy.
