The adoption of automated or self-driving vehicles in Aotearoa New Zealand cities is dependent on social meanings, feelings, and cultural practices, according to new research.

PhD student Moayad Shammut and Professor Imran Muhammad from the School of People, Environment and Planning at Massey University have had their research article ‘Automated mobilities and society: Why do social meanings matter?’ published in the journal Cities

Their research explored the factors that could influence the adoption of automated vehicles (AVs) in New Zealand in the future and found that a society’s car culture is heavily influential when it comes to adopting AVs. As a result of the car culture of New Zealand, the study found that overall New Zealand society tends to be inclined towards accepting AVs with lower automation levels to maintain the ‘driving pleasure’ and to allow the experience of exploring unplanned destinations.

Study data was collected from public Facebook pages across a five-year period when the AV debate gained momentum. Qualitative content analysis was conducted for a dataset drawn from 57 posts with over 4200 comments.

Moayad says it became clear through the analysis that AVs are associated with meanings of safety, travel freedom, and control.

Holistic solutions and foggy criteria

Former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced last November that $4000 would be made available for all small shop and dairy owners in New Zealand who want a fog cannon installed, with any additional cost to be paid by the business owner.

“We fully support dairies and small retailers getting protection,” says MTA media and PR manager Simon Bradwell. “The horrific recent events underline just how important that is.”

As most service stations are also effectively shops, MTA says they should be able to access the subsidy as well, but when they contacted the then Police Minister Chris Hipkins’ office for clarity on what is defined as a ‘shop’ under the subsidy criteria, they were only told that more information would be released soon.

A HOLISTIC SOLUTION

What is also concerning and confusing to MTA members is the police strategy. A “holistic” approach was mentioned during a recent discussion with the police in relation to the $6 million government fund announced earlier this year to help businesses

protect themselves from raids and robberies. Yet many members are at a loss as to what this strategy actually means.

“I don’t even understand what [‘holistic solution orientation’] means,” says MTA member Dipak Bagia, who operates 16 Caltex stations, some of which have been victims of ram raids and robberies in the past year.

“My personal attitude is that our members need access to those resources — we are the first port of call when police require assistance with CCTV review and fog cannons, bollards, CCTV upgrades, and other technology-based solutions. Face recognition systems and number plate recognition are becoming a must,” Dipak says.

Having enormous bins of rubbish going to landfill, and the cost of dumping them, prompted Cyclespot’s Grant Woolford and his wife Melissa to take a serious look at what other options were out there.

Grant says they always felt guilty about the rubbish, and when he looked closely he found the twice weekly dumping of the bins to landfill was not only costly but also environmentally destructive.

The solution — instead of dumping all the rubbish in one big bin, take a little time to sort and separate it, and find suitable recyclers for the different items.

So, for example, when a motorbike comes in from a supplier now, the team takes out all the steel from the packaging for it to be picked up by the scrap dealer.

“It didn’t cost us a cent,” Grant says.

Service manager Laurie Witham says everything related to the disposal of rubbish has been about reduction.

“We used to have an enormous rubbish bin and we have reduced the size of it, which reduced the cost of collections and the frequency of collections to half the previous number.

“Although there is a cost to recycle, it is off-set by the savings.”

He says cardboard has been recycled for years but it was plastics and polystyrene, along with soft plastics, that were making up the bulk of what was being thrown out.

“There is also a large amount of steel we recycle from the motorcycle crates which we get paid for and the used oil from servicing motorbikes also goes off to be used again,” Laurie says.

Car critics choose their favourites

THE NEW ZEALAND MOTORING WRITERS’ GUILD ANNOUNCES THE CONTENDERS FOR 2022’S NEW ZEALAND CAR OF THE YEAR

Twelve cars representing 10 brands have made the cut as finalists for the 2022 edition of the prestigious New Zealand Car of the Year, most embracing electrification.

Six fully battery-dedicated models feature, along with three more that have hybrid options within their respective ranges.

The importance of battery-involved mobility has been increasingly obvious to the administrator of the annual award, says president of the New Zealand Motoring Writers’ Guild, Richard Bosselman.

“The finalist selection again underscores the rapid addition of electrified options to the country’s new car model lists.”

Competition for the 2022 prize has nonetheless seen a resurgence from the combustion engine quarter, with a hot hatch and two sports utilities a reminder the market continues to be in transition.

In alphabetical order, the candidates are:

BMW iX; BYD Atto 3; Ford Everest; Hyundai i20 N; Kia EV6 and Sportage; Lexus NX; Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 and Mercedes-Benz C-Class; Mitsubishi Outlander; Polestar 2, and Tesla Model Y.

The BMW iX, BYD Atto 3, Kia EV6, Mercedes-AMG EQS, Polestar 2, and Tesla Model Y are fully electric and purpose-designed for batteries.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Lexus NX all avail in mains-replenished plug-in hybrid guise. The Lexus also delivers in mild hybrid; the Mercedes and Mitsubishi also in combustion engine forms.

Contenders considered in internal combustion are the Kia Sportage, the Hyundai i20 N compact petrol performance hatchback, and the Ford Everest, a seven-seater diesel sports utility wagon, related to the Ford Ranger one-tonne

utility that is highly popular here.

“Seeing electric vehicles come to the fore for New Zealand Car of the Year is not in itself new – of last year’s 10 finalists, all but one ‘battery-included’,” says Bosselman.

“Having as finalists six cars that are available solely with electric power does set a new benchmark for the award.”

The first electric-powered model to achieve New Zealand Car of the Year, represented by the Peter Greenslade Trophy, was the BMW i3, in 2015. That was a range extender version with a petrol engine acting as a power generator.

The prize has since gone to three fully electric cars. Jaguar i-Pace achieved the 2019 status, Mercedes-Benz EQC took the 2020 prize, and Hyundai Ioniq 5 is the current holder.

Now entering its 35th year, New Zealand Car of the Year has firm industry and public recognition as the country’s most prestigious motoring award. It is a truly national prize without commercial ties or influence.

To be considered as a finalist, a vehicle must have been launched in New Zealand as an all-new model in the past 12 months,

Game changer for EV diagnostics

By now, there is absolutely no doubt that electric vehicles are not just a fad but have become a major feature of the automotive ecosystem.

What is oil filter pressurisation?

EVERY NOW AND THEN WE’LL COME ACROSS AN OIL FILTER THAT LOOKS LIKE SOMEONE’S TRIED TO BLOW IT UP LIKE A BALLOON

Sometimes the filter might even be leaking from the bottom seal or have a displaced seal. This is not a sign of a poor-quality oil filter, but rather a symptom of over-pressurisation.

To understand over-pressurisation, we first have to look at how oil circulates. When you first start your engine, the oil pump kicks in and draws oil from the sump. The pump then compresses the oil before sending it to the oil filter to be cleaned, and then through to all the main oil galleries to be distributed among all of the engine’s rotating and reciprocating components.

The oil pump is driven by the engine’s crankshaft. Most engine lubrication systems are designed to keep oil constant between 40–60 PSI, regardless of engine speed or temperature. This is controlled by a small component within the engine known as the oil pressure control valve.

The oil pressure control valve is commonly found as a spring-loaded plug. It remains closed

at low engine speeds and low oil viscosity, preventing oil from being drawn into the sump and directing it straight into the oil filter. As engine speed increases, so does the volume of oil being pumped through the engine. This causes the oil galleries and bearing to create a restriction in the lubrication circuit, which results in pressurisation.

The spring within the oil pressure control valve determines the point at which the valve opens, meaning it controls the engine’s maximum oil pressure.

Once the oil pressure reaches the point where it is greater than the force of the spring, the valve opens, allowing some of the oil to return to the sump, thus relieving some of the pressure. The oil pressure control valve

is subjected to wear and tear over the course of the engine’s life. Over time, a groove can

form on the valve housing and this generally occurs with the valve closed, causing the valve to become stuck. Poor maintenance with infrequent oil changes, contamination from engine coolant, or ice formation are some of the reasons why this might occur. With the valve clogged, the engine oil exceeds its maximum pressure, which in turn causes the oil filter to balloon, or even worse, the seal to become displaced or the filter housing itself to split causing catastrophic loss of oil pressure and your engine calling it a day.

Frequent oil and oil filter changes keep things running clean inside your engine and help to prevent carbon build-up in your oil pressure control valve. This is where Ryco comes in. Projecta enters lithium battery market

In collaboration with parent company Brown & Watson International (which has extensive lithium iron phosphate know-how) and after a comprehensive three-year development and testing period, Projecta has launched a new 12V lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO₄) battery range. The range provides powerful, yet safe and reliable performance for a range of applications including 4x4, RV, trade, and emergency services.

The range’s LiFePO₄ chemistry is the safest lithium technology available, and makes the new Projecta batteries inherently much safer than lithium cobalt competitors, a performance measure that was proven during in-house testing.

Projecta’s lithium batteries also feature a built-in Battery Management System (BMS), which offers protection in the event of under/overvoltage and over/underheating. Additionally, BMS monitors individual cell voltages, balancing when required, and providing extra peace of mind for users.

Preparing for the workshop of the future

MOTOR VEHICLES HAVE CHANGED SIGNIFICANTLY OVER THE PAST 50 YEARS BUT THE EXPECTATIONS OF OUR CUSTOMERS HAVEN’T. EVERY VEHICLE OWNER WANTS TO DROP OFF THEIR CAR AT THE LOCAL SERVICE CENTRE AND KNOW THAT EVERYTHING WILL BE CHECKED AND MAINTAINED CORRECTLY

As an industry we’ve adapted and met our customers’ needs, and even offered them wi-fi, a caffeine hit, and an EV charge along the way.

The arrival of electric vehicles (EV) and hybrids brings new challenges. EV and hybrids account for around 10 per cent of new vehicle sales. It’s going to take some time to switch out the 4 millionplus vehicles with internal combustion engines on our roads, but there will be a shift in servicing requirements and New Zealand workshops can start to build that into their businesses today.

WHAT WILL AN EV SERVICE LOOK LIKE?

This is a big question that many workshops are looking at when planning investment. We are already starting to see less investment in oil and lube equipment and more emphasis on other services such as brakes, tyres, wheel alignment, air-con, ADAS calibration, and batteries.

Most EV brands suggest a six-monthly service to check over the batteries and we need to take these recommendations and build full-service packages around them, including checks such as:

• Battery testing and reporting

• Wheel alignment and tyre care

• Brake and suspension checks

• ADAS calibration

• Air-con check (R1234yf and R134A gases).

GETTING EQUIPPED

If your service centre isn’t handling tyres, you should investigate this as a source of revenue, adding roller brake testing with slide slip suspension plates will round out servicing options for both EV and ICE vehicles, as does air-con servicing and driver assistance system calibration.

Insulated footwear, and Arc flashrated clothing (including gloves and eyewear) are important health and safety additions.

Battery replacement equipment, like the Steiner battery lift table and a solid two-post hoist suitable for battery removal, should also be key considerations. Hoists with asymmetrical or double-jointed arms give excellent access for battery removal (Nussbaum is top of the line here).

MISFIRES CAN BE TIME CONSUMING AND COSTLY FOR WORKSHOPS, ESPECIALLY IF THE VEHICLE IS ACTUALLY NOT MISFIRING. SO, WHAT CAN BE DONE TO IMPROVE THE DIAGNOSTICS?

Engine Control Units (ECU) are not without their limitations and sometimes they can wrongly diagnose a misfire.

So, despite the fact that only three things are needed for successful combustion in most gasoline engines — fuel to air ratio, ignition discharge and correct timing, and cylinder integrity — many technicians still struggle to solve the problem and can sometimes spend hours on wild goose chases that lead to purchasing unnecessary parts. What can be done differently?

KNOW YOUR MISFIRES

A misfire is not always a cylinder lacking a combustion event — the true definition is ‘the slowing of the crankshaft’.

When a cylinder fires and combustion happens, the nitrogen inside the air charge is heated by the combustion event. The heat causes the nitrogen gas to expand, and the pressure exhibited on top of the piston helps to propel it down and causes the crankshaft rotational velocity to increase.

If there is inadequate fuel supply, a combustion event will fall short, or it will not be as intense as needed. Both scenarios will slow the crankshaft and be potentially flagged as a misfire.

Secondly, in a scenario when no (or inadequate) ignition supply is available within the combustion chamber, the Air/Fuel (AF) mixture will fail to ignite properly, or at all. Again, this situation will indeed cause a slowing of the

crankshaft, and misfires will likely be flagged by the ECU.

Thirdly, when a cylinder lacks integrity, it could be because of one of two different reasons:

1. If the cylinder cannot breathe, it cannot fill adequately with the proper A/F charge, leading to no low compression, or an A/F density issue, where inert exhaust gases displace the A/F mixture — like the EGR effect.

2. A cylinder’s inability to seal properly. This type of fault can lead to a flameout condition (Figure 1). A similar event occurs with the frequent cold-idle misfires we tend to experience on the GDI platforms. The carbon at the intake valve ports disrupts the airflow, and the air charge ‘tumbles’ into the cylinder differently than it is designed to do, and the contribution to the crankshaft rotation is lacking significantly enough to cause misfires/ driveability symptoms (Figure 2).

SO WHY ARE MISFIRES DIFFICULT?

System strategy is often a reason for a misdiagnosis. Many believe that misfire detection is accomplished only by monitoring the changes in crankshaft

rotational velocity. The fact of the matter is that there are many useful strategies used to detect misfires and for some vehicles this will require more than one strategy, including:

CKP sensor signal frequency: As the crankshaft rotates, its tone wheel (with strategically spaced notches on it) rotates past the CKP sensor (Figure 3). This causes the sensor to output a change in signal voltage. These changes in signal amplitude are what the engine controller is monitoring. As the crankshaft slows, so too does the frequency. The pulses become more widely spaced apart. This is what the engine controller is looking for to determine if a misfire has occurred.

Spark ionisation: This is based on the principles and physics of the ignition system operation. The spark event is very sensitive and reactive to the environment in which it is fired. A spark is a finite event. This means that there is only a set amount of energy an ignition coil can store and discharge. Energy is required to discharge a spark and overcome all combined sources of electrical resistance within the path of the spark. Changing factors like spark plug gap, cylinder compression, A/F ratio, and cylinder contents (like oil or antifreeze), or even changes in resistance from spark plug wires or a weak ignition coil, are the conditions in which the spark fired will change. This will affect the intensity and duration of the spark event. Here is an example of a normal spark event compared to one occurring in a misfiring cylinder, due to a compression leak (Figure 4).

AF sensor signal variation: Technology is brilliant, and the speed at which the data streams communicate sets us up for success, compared to the days of old. With the speed involved in this technology, the response of the heated exhaust gas oxygen sensors (or A/F sensors), and the ECU’s ability to process and display it is tremendous.

The sensor’s speed and accuracy now give the engine controller the ability to detect variations and A/F imbalance, from cylinder to cylinder. As a result, this technology allows us to determine which cylinder may be ‘misfiring’ (via engine data), even before a misfire is flagged (Figure 5).

Spark kilovolt (kV) amplitude: Very similar to the characteristics described above in the ‘Spark Ionisation’ strategy. This strategy works from the same principles, however the detection strategy is less sophisticated but still very simple and effective.

When a spark event initiates, it’s the firing kV that is visible as the tall vertical event (Figure 6). When the coil fails to discharge, or the firing kV is significantly diminished, the detection circuit will see it, just as an ignition scope would display it. It’s the software in the engine controller that is designed to recognise a sufficient spark firing kV from a deficiency.

CASE STUDY

Below is an example of preliminary research performed, implementing the proper tools for system evaluation and capture of a fault, along with the root cause of the perceived misfire.

A 2000 Isuzu Rodeo, with nearly 300,000kms on the odometer, arrived with a warning light on. The DTCs were scanned, and a single P0303 ‘cylinder no. 3 misfire detected’ was stored. After talking to the customer, there were no other driveability issues noted. If not for the light, the customer wouldn’t have even realised a fault existed.

Speaking further with the customer, it was found that the vehicle had

recently been taken to a local and reputable shop for correction of a driveability concern. The customer couldn’t recall what repairs were performed.

The original Powertrain Control Module (PCM) believed that the no. 3 cylinder was misfiring. Knowing that the oxygen content of the exhaust gas will rise during a misfire, I attempted to snoop this out in scan data, via fuel

trim. Elevated fuel trim will be the result of detected oxygen from a misfire (the oxygen that isn’t consumed because combustion didn’t occur). However, the status of the feedback system was in an open-loop default, making fuel trim an unreliable tool for misfire detection.

The question is, “Why does the PCM believe cylinder no. 3 is misfiring?” However, other valid questions may arise, like: “How does this vehicle’s PCM detect a misfire?” and, “What components make up the misfire detection

strategy?” However, one of the most important questions to ask after answering the previous ones is: “How can we test the detection strategy for accuracy?”

With a little bit of research, it was quite easy to locate information about this vehicle’s system description and operation of the misfire detection strategy, and the necessary wiring diagrams associated with the system. This system functions quite differently (Figure 7). The PCM monitors what is known as Combustion Quality (CQ) signals.

assume there is something wrong with the quality of the ignition event, and flags the cylinder as ‘misfiring’. Once the suspect cylinder is identified and under the appropriate load/rpm conditions, the PCM will begin to flash the MIL, and a cylinder-specific DTC is flagged in the PCM memory.

A PLAN OF ACTION

This job requires a multi-trace lab scope to capture the fault and confirm cylinder No. 3 is responsible. I chose to monitor three pieces of data. These three will tell the entire story about what happened, which coil is responsible, and how the other coils look in comparison. All I need to know ahead of time is the cylinder positioning, so I can properly identify coil no. 3.

• On channel no. 1 (in yellow), I will be capturing the CQ signals for Bank no. 1 cylinders.

• On channel no. 2 (in green), I will be capturing the CQ signals for Bank no. 2 cylinders.

• On channel no. 3 (in blue), I will be capturing the coil current trace for cylinder no. 3 (suspect cylinder).

Viewing the multi-trace capture on the lab scope, the blue coil ramps represent when coil no. 3 discharged (Figures 8 and 9). Between the two blue coil ramps are six distinct CQ signals, and all have been encircled. The red circles represent the CQ events for coil no. 3 (suspect cylinder), and the blue circles represent those CQ signals from the other cylinders. The entire lower portion of the CQ signal is missing from our suspect cylinder no. 3.

This is the reason for the flashing MIL and P0303. Of course, the root cause still has to be found, but we have the justification to invest more time in this arena and pursue the root cause with further testing.

As the detection circuitry is housed within the ignition coil, the ignition system must be inspected carefully, as there may simply be an issue with a coil, not necessarily a true ignition event fault. Using tools that we have at our disposal, the goal is to monitor the actual ignition events, as they are the input to the coils responsible for generating the CQ signals.

There is one CQ signal reporting to the PCM on two individual parallel circuits — one for each bank of the V6 engine’s coils. These signals are induced by the actual discharge of the spark from the COP ignition coils. The detection pick-up for the CQ signals is located inside each of the COP coil’s integrated circuits.

As a spark from each coil is discharged, a shared circuit (one, from each bank of three coils) reports each of the coils’ CQ signals to the PCM. In turn, if the PCM determines one of the CQ signals is not quite like the other, it can only

However, before getting my hands dirty, a TSB was located relating to the same fault we have been experiencing. It’s been discovered that one of the six coils has been deliberately made to be 7mm shorter than the rest of them. This is to accommodate its positioning in the tight space beneath the brake master cylinder.

ELEMENTARY CONCLUSION

So if this coil is placed anywhere other than in the cylinder no. 6 position, the integrated detection circuit will be further (in proximity) from the spark plug. The resulting induced signature will be altered due to the unintentional air gap. What are the chances the shorter coil no. 6 is hovering over cylinder no. 3’s spark plug? Rather than invest more time in testing, a preliminary inspection of the coil placement seems much more efficient.

As can be seen from the picture here, the length of the shorter coil no. 6 is compared to one of the other five longer coils (Figure 10). The problem is that this shorter coil is not over no. 6 (as it should be), but it is over no. 3 (our suspect cylinder). This occurred during the recent repair noted above — the engine had no misfires whatsoever, but the engine controller certainly detected it as the case.

Misfire detection strategies of today are brilliant, but they have their flaws. For instance, something as simple as a worn axle CV joint, or even a damaged tyre, can skew a CKP signal enough to flag misfires.

The key? Understand the system strategy, reference wiring diagrams, employ the appropriate testing tools, and have a sound knowledge of what they can and cannot do. If you’ve got those bases covered, the rest is simply putting it all into practice.

As a result of the nationwide shipping delays experienced in 2021–2022 due to Covid and staff shortages in the courier and freight industry, Turbo Bits identified and mitigated the risk of delivery delays by opening a second warehouse in Auckland. This allowed urgent orders to be collected in person in the region, within hours if necessary. Aston Martin turns 110

January marked 110 years since founders Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford officially formed the partnership that went on to create the first Aston Martin car, igniting more than a century of automotive intensity, cutting-edge British innovation, and high-octane racing success.

Born on the track and inspired by its founders’ passion for racing, Aston Martin has risen from humble beginnings in a small workshop on Henniker Mews, London, to become one of the world’s most renowned automotive marques, synonymous with inventive design, luxurious craftsmanship, thrilling performance, and scarce exclusivity.

EU battery recycling on the up

BATTERY RECYCLING IS THE TECHNIQUE OF REUSING AND REPROCESSING BATTERIES WITH THE GOAL OF MINIMISING THE NUMBER OF BATTERIES DISPOSED OF AS MATERIAL WASTE

The Europe battery recycling market is expected to record a positive compound annual growth rate of approximately 40 per cent during the forecast period (2022-2027) and reach approximately US$3.5billion by 2027, primarily driven by the depleting availability of fresh raw materials for the production of batteries which is increasingly growing in demand in both household electronics as well as industrial use.

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has benefited the battery recycling industry as the demand for electric vehicles (EV) in the region experienced a growing trend with a remarkable rise in sales in the year 2020.

Augmenting demand from industries for batteries has in turn posed increasing pressure on raw material production. It is directly affecting the ratio proportion of the ability to produce raw materials like lithium to meet the demand. This has focused the attention on recycling processes to meet the rise of battery requirements in industries.

Lithium-ion batteries accounted for about 30 per cent of the market in 2021, which is expected to grow at a high rate of above 40 per cent in the coming years owing to the increase in demand from the automotive industry and the trend towards electrification.

Furthermore, due to growing environmental problems, such as contamination of the soil, water, air, and rise in global warming, the European Union is pushing for the construction of battery recycling infrastructure. All these factors are likely to enhance the battery recycling market’s trajectory for growth.

However, due to the market’s uncertainty and immaturity, there are a few barriers. For example, most of the electric vehicles in the market have yet not reached the end-of-life stage which raises numerous questions related to battery lifespans, collection, condition, and compatibility with recycling processes.

According to the International Council on Clean Transportation, the European electric vehicle (EV) market experienced remarkable growth in 2020, posting a 143 per cent increase in sales of passenger electric cars from 2019. The sales in 2020 made Europe the biggest EV market globally, surpassing China and the US.

Although sales of all new cars in Europe decreased by 20 per cent, the increase in EV sales boosted the EV share to 11 per cent. Both battery electric

in terms of market share but also in overall terms. In Germany, sales of PHEV vehicles from January to June increased from 47,584 in 2019 to 93,848 in 2020. Similar trends were observed across other countries in Europe.

Then you invite the general public to come to see who is making these extraordinary vehicles — to witness the finished product and the businesses that made it possible.

Autorama — a new event planned for Mystery Creek Events Centre in Hamilton on 10 – 12 November, 2023 — aims to do just that: bring together businesses supplying the owners of performance, classic, hot rods, imports, 4WD, motorbikes, and much more with parts, services, specialised tools, and fabrication work.

Put together by the same team that has been managing the Special Interest Vehicle Association of NZ (SIVANZ) for the past six years, Autorama 2023 has been created to demonstrate, and celebrate, the significance of the automotive industry supplying parts, services, and expertise to the special interest vehicle sector. To make the event a success SIVANZ is inviting everyone in the automotive sector to get involved.

BIG AND BEAUTIFUL

A SIVANZ business survey in 2019 estimated that the businesses supporting the special interest vehicle sector contribute an estimated $5 billion annually to the New Zealand economy. At that time the value of special interest vehicles in private ownership was well in excess of $3.4 billion; some pundits believe the figure now is closer to $6 billion. It is clear that industry and car people are a big part of New Zealand and the economy, and the Autorama 2023 team think that is worth getting together to celebrate.

When most people look at hot rod, classic, modified Japanese, or performance cars that have had thousands of hours poured into them, very few see the businesses behind the car — those that sold the tools to put the car together, or that rebuilt the transmission, or the specialised machines and operator knowledge that went into reconditioning the engine, the computer programming, the metal fabrication, or the skill required to mix and apply

modern paints. That means they don’t know where to go when they want those specialist skills for their own projects — Autorama is the opportunity to promote your business to new customers.

Everyone from the small business owner to the largest will have the opportunity to talk face to face with like-minded industry peers and create new business relationships. Only automotive businesses will be exhibiting.

Up to 12,000 people are expected to pass through the gates at Autorama 2023 to view the exhibits and cars on show and make purchasing decisions; they want to buy from exhibiting businesses. Statistically, around 40 per cent of show attendees are looking to buy tools at a show, 30 per cent will buy car care products, and about 30 per cent are thinking about changing their wheels/ tyres in the next 12 months. A further 20 per cent are looking for performance parts, so the range of opportunity for exhibitors is huge. We all know cars are important to customers and a show like this gives them the fuel and motivation to get projects finished, which means getting those tools, parts, expertise, and services from the connections they make at the show.

The event was originally scheduled for March but was deferred to November to give some key stakeholders more time to plan their exhibits and to coincide with the completion of some freshly built hot rods, competition, and classic cars. This date change has meant some details in the exhibitor and sponsor pack have to be amended.

TREV HALSTEAD IS BACK WITH HIS WILDEST STUDEBAKER CREATION TO DATE!

Even to the uninitiated, it’s pretty clear to see that there’s been a tonne of work that’s gone into the build of this ‘51 Studebaker Starlight Coupe, and that’s before you even know what it looked like when it left the factory. There are upsides and downsides to building a car that no one else has been brave enough to, or is simply too rare for people to know, and the downside is that without the understanding of what it should have looked like, often some of the effort that’s been applied gets missed by passersby. That’s all part of the appeal of it for Studebaker customiser extraordinaire Trevor Halstead though. He’s happy to let people try to work out where the original Stude parts end and his custom work begins. In the case of this car, his seventh customised Stude, and the fifth of his builds that’s graced the pages of NZV8, that’s pretty easy though … There’s nothing left of the car as it left the factory. Well, not quite true, the rear brakes, albeit rebuilt, are the ones that it left the factory with. Well there is the rear inner courtesy light... The rest, almost without exaggeration, is modified in some way, shape, or form from how it left the factory.

Obviously the look of the car is what first

turns heads, and the aesthetic Trev has achieved is testament to his vision of wanting to build a traditional custom with as much Studebaker content as possible. The key point being that while there are Studebaker parts throughout, very few actually came from this particular car, or even the Starlight model.

The custom look begins with the significant reduction in roof height over what the car left the factory with. That chop comes in at a cool 4½-inches at the front and 3½-inches at the back. Trev will be the first to tell you he’s not a big computer guy, so there was no fancy photoshop or design work that went into getting the look right, or even internet pictures to provide inspiration. The roof chop, just like the rest of the car, is the product of his own vision, not influenced by anything, or anyone else.

It was only towards the end of the three-year build that Trev actually even started looking at the internet, and as part of that, began plastering social media with build photos of the car. Each and every time he posted, there would be countless questions and praise for the work that was being undertaken, which fuelled him on to see the build to completion.

What people didn’t see, due to it already being performed by the time Trev got online, was exactly how much work went into the roof, as it’s not just the pillar height that’s lower, but the centre was also peaked to accommodate a split front windscreen. At the same time, the roof gutters were removed,

contenders, that was going to be a big ask. He did also say it would be his last big build, but we’ve also heard him say that before, so we certainly hope it’s not the case, as to have so much talent and not put it to use again would be a big loss to the New Zealand custom car scene.

The plus side about wanting to get the car into the Repco Beach Hop top five, was he knew he had to make sure every aspect of the build was as good as the body. That means the parts that you don’t see, such as the undercarriage, along with the obvious parts like the engine bay are all equally as flawless. With the Starlight running a separate chassis, it allowed Trev to get the engine and chassis looking

right before dropping the body over the top. The chassis, while based on the original item, was Z-notched below the firewall to give the car full suspension travel while looking like it’s in the weeds. It’s an old customiser’s trick, and one that works well, as did the job of plating and smoothing the chassis rails, and creating custom cross members complete with radiused corners. Speaking of which, note the corners of the doors, hood, and trunk have all been radiused too!

The mechanical componentry attached to the chassis including the 1965 Studebaker Cruiser steering box and every bracket has either been fabricated from stainless steel and polished or HPC

coated before being attached for the final time. That includes the custom four-link rear suspension and the narrowed Dana 44 diff housing that’s been filled with a 3.31:1 crown wheel and pinion.

Of course, that meant when it came time to mount the 299ci motor, it needed to sit higher on the chassis rails than stock to ensure that when the suspension came down, the perfectly painted sump wasn’t destroyed. The engine — built with a 259 block and forged 289 stroker crank — is equally as well finished as the exterior, with the casting marks being smoothed off before the engine was painted. was important, it remained secondary to looks. Trev’s achieved a great combination of both, in part by sourcing a rare Edmunds 2x2 manifold and topping it with a pair of Stromberg WW carbs. Always one for using creativity over cash, Trev opted for factory Studebaker Avanti headers to feed into stainless 2-inch exhausts and custom 3-inch baffled lake pipes. While the lake pipes are hidden up under the reinforced sills, the triple 2-inch tips were handcrafted to be a feature that draws the eye.

The engine package is backed by a Borg-Warner 3-speed gearbox with overdrive on second and third gear, and you guessed it, that too has been smoothed and painted before being fitted. The amount of work in the engine bay is extreme, but Trev probably spent more hours on the interior, handling most of the trimwork himself, other than the stitching for the seats, doors and hood lining that he handed over to Greg Mather at Midnight Upholstery. Each and every one of the polished stainless domes used on the boot and door trims was created by hand, as was the rest of the metal work you see, including the window winders and door handles. Absolutely none of it was off the shelf, or off another vehicle, but simply the result of Trev spending hours cutting, welding, bending, and polishing. Even the steering wheel didn’t miss his touch. It started life as an HQ Holden wheel that is now matched with a custom-made centre and a ‘56 Stude horn button. Under the custom dashboard is not just all the wiring to make everything work, but also a Toyota electric power steering motor, and the wiper motor to help keep the engine bay clean.

The gauges are all VDO with Smiths rev counter and speedo. The rest of the components are a mix of bits and pieces Trev had around, like a Ford Escort handbrake lever and a shifter out of an old bus, which was bent into the desired shape. Each of the custom knobs below the Sony head unit was also custom shaped on a linisher from stainless bar and polished by Trev to a finish better than you’d

WHEN SERVICING BRAKING SYSTEMS

Given how vital a vehicle’s braking system is to the safety of the driver, occupants, and other road users, it’s critical that all aspects of brake servicing, maintenance, repair, and replacement are carried out with care.

The following are a few points to consider when undertaking a brake job, whether changing brake pads, disc brake rotors, drums and shoes, or doing more complex component rebuilds — often it’s the small things that can be overlooked.

INSPECT THOROUGHLY

Although the primary focus might be to fit a new set of pads or disc brake rotors, while the wheels are off the opportunity should be taken to thoroughly inspect the entire braking system and other hard-to-access components. This could include sighting and feeling the brake hoses for cracks, deformities, or connector corrosion.

While doing this, if the rotor hubs are showing signs of corrosion, now’s the perfect chance to clean them. Surface rust can form at the hub face where the rotor sits and if the corrosion isn’t removed, once the new rotor is fitted it may not sit properly — this could result in vibration when driving. Cleaning the rotor hub is a quick and easy job using sandpaper, steel wool, or a wire brush.

free of corrosion — if they’re a bit rusty, tackle them with a wire brush; this will ensure that the nuts can easily be tightened and loosened when required. Once cleaned, if the nuts don’t turn smoothly inspect them to make sure the studs have not been cross threaded. Cross threading will impact how well the nuts (and wheel) can be tightened. Studs will need to be replaced if damaged.

For newer vehicles with ABS, check the ABS sensor. This system works by reading imprints in the rotor, so it’s important that this sensor is clean. The

majority of ABS sensors are located at the wheel hub, meaning they’re prone to dirt and road grime. If they look dirty, clean with Bendix Cleanup.

CHECK LUBRICATION

Sliding pins and boots are other items that can sometimes be overlooked. The sliding pins play a critical role in the brake caliper’s operation and should slide freely. If they’re stiff this may result in the caliper not fully releasing which can cause a vehicle to pull in the direction of the engaged rotor. As well as being dangerous, this can increase fuel consumption.

If the sliding pins and boots appear damaged, they should be replaced. If the sliding pins look serviceable, they may just need lubricating, which is a simple job using brake lube such as Bendix Ceramasil.

Depending on the brake pads chosen, ‘bedding in’ may be needed — during this process dirt and debris from the rotor surface is removed and a thick layer of brake pad compound is transferred to the surface of the rotor. Failing to undertake this procedure — which involves a series of warm-up and then aggressive braking applications — can result in uneven pad depositions on the rotor surface, and will feel like the rotors are warped.

To avoid this, select Bendix brake pads. Bendix pads feature a ‘Blue Titanium Stripe’, which is designed to rapidly mate with the rotor when brakes are first applied. Full braking performance is achieved instantly, eliminating the need for you to bed in, saving considerable time.

DON’T FORGET THE BRAKE FLUID

Brake fluid plays an important role in a vehicle’s braking system but is often overlooked. It ensures that braking force from the pedal and brake master cylinder is transferred to the brake calipers to bring the vehicle safely to a standstill. If replacing worn brake pads, the brakes should then be bled to ensure there’s no air trapped in the brake lines.

The brake fluid should be periodically monitored and changed in keeping with recommendations in the vehicle’s service manual.

With these additional boxes ticked off the brake job checklist, the vehicle should be good to go for many more kilometres.

A safer caravan coupling

NARVA adds high performing Light Boxes to AeroTech range

NARVA’S NEW RANGE OF AEROTECH LED LIGHT BOXES ARE ITS BRIGHTEST PRIMARY WARNING LIGHTS YET, PROVIDING A POWERFUL YET UNIFORM OUTPUT THAT MEETS AND EXCEEDS ALL INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS

Designed, engineered, and tested in Australia, the AeroTech LED Light Boxes are available in three sizes and all offer six selectable flash patterns, making them suitable for a range of machines, from light commercials through to heavy transport, materials handling, agricultural, construction, and other equipment.

The lights’ powerful output comes courtesy of precision lens optics coupled with high-power LEDs, while a unique reflector design ensures superior visibility during both daylight hours and at night.

Flash patterns on all three models include Ultra (alternating flash), Ultra (cross flash), Rotate, Quint, Double Rotate, Steady On, and Double Flash, which produces output that’s up to six times brighter than what’s required under SAE Class 1.

Another feature of the Light Boxes is an optional night mode — because of the AeroTech range’s extreme brightness, night mode ensures the light doesn’t dazzle other road users or nearby workers. Night mode can either be wired to a switch or to vehicle park lights for greater convenience.

Impressive light output aside, the AeroTech LED Light Boxes have also been designed with durability and longevity in mind. Ultrasonic welding seals the lights from water and dust ingress, ensuring an IP67 and IP69K rating. Additionally, the Light Boxes are equipped with heavy-duty bases and feature virtually unbreakable polycarbonate lenses, complete with special Makrolon 2607 material which is UV-resistant. Solid state circuitry also means that there’s no moving parts, eliminating the chance of mechanical failure.

Prior to launch, the Light Boxes underwent an extensive testing schedule at Narva’s in-house Melbourne testing facility, with results reviewed, backed, and approved by accredited independent labs. Durability testing on these models included thermal and mechanical shock, vibration, salt spray,

and ingress protection, along with real-world environment tests. The Light Boxes are also vibration tested to ISO and military spec and are CISPR25 Class 3 approved ensuring no RFI, for a quiet cabin.

For added versatility, the AeroTech LED Light Boxes offer multiple mounting options, with the ability to mount via bolts to the cradle, directly to the base, or even with an optional magnetic mounting which has been rated to 120km/h (Part Nos 85016A/85016AC). Each Light Box is also provided with two metres of cable (permanent mount).
