Words can’t really express what we have all been through for the past three months and what a relief I feel to be putting out another printed issue of this magazine, knowing that glamping businesses are opening up again across the globe. Some will not open, because the added pressures of extra cleaning and a shortened season will mean that it is not viable for them. I wish everybody the very best in whatever course of action they choose. We are entering into unchartered territory and along with the excitement of greeting new guests will come no small amount of concern about reopening, and new waves of infection.

OUTSTANDING OPENS BRITAIN’S VERY FIRST GLAMPING SHOWROOM Outstanding have opened up to Britain’s very first Glamping showroom in Melbourn. The Showroom has been welcoming visitors since June 17th, featuring a number of safari tents on display. The Showroom acts as a Glamping Show Village allowing visitors to walk around and see the safari tents both inside and out, meaning that they have a better understanding of the products on offer.

At the showroom, visitors will be able to see the Safari tent XS, the Safari tent Compact and the lovely Safari Cottage.

Contact the team at outstanding tent.co.uk for more details and to arrange a visit to the showroom.

The Glamping Show gets the Go Ahead Karen Cooke adds, “The show will have to look very different, but safety is the key concern and the correct protocols will have to be put in place. The important thing is, that we can get together again and have the chance to see and evaluate the latest products and services and reinforce the business relationships and friendships that have been so difficult during lockdown.”

Organisers of the Glamping Show have confirmed that preparations for the show are progressing with the full expectation that the show will take place between 1719 September 2020, NAEC, Warwickshire. Preparations include wider specific arrival times and downloadable tickets to limit queuing at the entrance, wider gangways, open spaces, outdoor catering, bookable car parking spaces, deep clean regimes and provision of hand sanitisers. Health & Safety officers will also be present throughout the show to assist with social distancing and respond to any issues should they arise.

One of the more notable changes to this year’s show is how the seminar programme will operate. This year, the seminars will be available both in-person and online, giving visitors to the show flexibility to view at their leisure and to allow those from further afield to access the content as well. The seminar programme this year will be organised by our sister publication International Glamping Business and its publisher Steph Curtis-Raleigh. Furthermore, an exciting new online networking experience is being created, allowing exhibitors and visitors to connect and share information more easily than ever. It will allow visitors to

the show the chance to do a bit of research before arrival, and those unable to attend to find out about, and contact exhibitors at the show. Lockdown has been an incredibly challenging time for everyone, and we are all looking forward to the chance to get back to normal. For the past few months the hospitality sector has been plagued with uncertainty and a lack of information. The Glamping Show provides the ability to get up to date with what’s been happening in the world of glamping; from new products, to vital information on how to bounce back and thrive after the reopening. But more than that, The Glamping Show has always been an incredibly exciting event. With cutting edge products from a collection of the best glamping companies out there and speakers with unrivalled industry knowledge; the glamping show is, and has always been, a fantastic day out, which is exactly what most of us are in need of right now. www.theglampingshow.com

LuxeTenten opens first Romanov Residence in Uden Councillor Maarten Prinssen opened the first spectacular Romanov Residence at Holiday Park De Pier in Uden in The Netherlands. It was created by LuxeTenten in collaboration with top designers, Wilfried Baeten and Pieter Laureys. With the Romanov Residence and the previously launched Gotland tent lodges, LuxeTenten is focussing specifically on campers in the luxury sector. "The Romanov Residence sets a new standard in luxury camping accommodation," says Ivo van der Vlis, CEO and co-owner of LuxeTenten. "This development fits in with our growth strategy to become the international market leader in luxury camping accommodation. We want the Romanov and Gotland tent lodges to appeal to the top segment of the glamping market

worldwide. Our goal is to roll out both concepts internationally." The Romanov Residence – just like the Gotland lodges – was designed by and is manufactured in collaboration with RAY Tensile Design, LuxeTenten’s innovation partner. The Eindhoven-based design agency, co-owned by top designer Wilfried Baeten, is known for its innovative canvas tent structures, using natural materials wherever possible. Interior designer Pieter Laureys of TKI, was responsible for the interior design and the interior accessories of the Romanov Residence. Van der Vlis says, "We have noticed that a growing group of campers worldwide seek the luxury and comfort of their home but in the middle of nature. The purpose of this grand opening is to show that this type of luxury is not only reserved for a small

selection of five-star campsites. The camping guests seem to agree with us, as the Romanov Residence is now fully booked for the rest of the year". Rems Verbossen, owner of Holiday Park De Pier comments, "The Romanov Residence fits perfectly within the vision we developed for the park. We want to offer our customers a true nature experience in a unique setting but without having to compromise on comfort".

LOVE2STAY INTRODUCE SAFE STAY INITIATIVE operations to cleaning practices and product offerings.

Premier glamping site Love2Stay, has introduced the Safe Stay initiative, launching in July; defining a new standard in site cleaning standards, elevating hygiene practices from check-in to check-out. Safe Stay will be a rigorous enhanced cleaning protocol system that applies trusted know-how in caravan park

Love2Stay will build upon the already high standards of housekeeping and cleaning and disinfection protocols, where hospital-grade cleaning products and upgraded protocols are currently in use. The goal of the Love2Stay, Safe Stay initiative is to provide guests with assurance and peace of mind when they stay at the 22-acre caravan and glamping park. The initiative will create a focus on cleanliness that will be visible to guests throughout their entire stay – on their caravan pitches, in their glamping lodges, in communal shower blocks, in fitness rooms and in other public spaces throughout the resort.

Love2Stay’s Safe Stay was developed to meet evolving consumer expectations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research indicates that consumers have heightened concerns regarding hygiene on their journey, and trust in cleanliness standards will be critical to restarting travel. “Our first priority has always been the safety of our guests and team Members,” said Chris Skitt, Love2Stay Park Manager. “Safe Stay builds on the best practices and protocols we’ve developed over the last couple of months since our shutdown in March, allowing our guests to relax and focus on enjoying the unforgettable experiences we have to offer – while protecting our team Members who are on the front lines of hospitality.

Rinnai - Help All the Way Rinnai – makers of continuous flow gas water heaters and systems that give limitless, on demand supplies of hot water – are now offering all end-users on all sites a ‘Help Me Choose’ facility via the company’s digital touchpoints. This service is being emphasised in conjunction with ‘now’ being an ideal time to replace old, inefficient stored water systems and gain significant operational expenditure advantages by making the switch to the continuous flow method. The end-user, site manager or owner simply visits the www.rinnaiuk.com website for instant assistance on choosing the right products to deliver fuel, energy, and environmentally efficient hot water, reliably and constantly. Says Rinnai’s Chris Goggin, ‘We recognise that every application is

08

www.glampingbusiness.com

unique and that choosing the right product can be a little daunting so we invite end-users to visit our website www.rinnaiuk.com and find the ‘Help Me Choose’ facility and we will do everything else from there,” adds Mr Goggin. Rinnai recently completed one installation, after conducting a thorough site survey including a full report to all parties. The report analysed Life Cycle Costings and Carbon footprint of the existing system and projected both capital and operational expenditure benefits on using a continuous flow system. The existing system was a heated stored water system – this meant that the site was paying to heat water it was not instantly using. The owner commented, “Clearly the site needed to change the system. We presented the project to Rinnai’s

Technical Sales team who came up with the design, configured the sizes of unit required and delivered the system complete and to a very tight timescale. “In terms of gas usage running costs compared to the old wasteful storage system, our bills have virtually been halved since the Rinnai system went live five months ago which is absolutely tremendous.” The Rinnai Specification and Design Team can also prepare installation schematics that demonstrate best practise regarding legislative design considerations. This expertise will guarantee best practise to combat Legionella, G3 and a host of other onsite compliance issues. The result is a high efficiency, low emission system delivering unlimited amounts of hot water.

Campsites.co.uk Lockdown Survey A survey of 7,000 conducted by Campsites.co.uk during lockdown reveals UK campers and glampers' expectations of reopening. The study found that 91% of people were happy that tourism would start to open by the beginning of July, and details the raft of changes they believe sites must make to keep guests safe.

Demand for travel is high In a sign of people’s eagerness to get away, 43% of those polled said campsites should open before July. This isn’t just the view of frustrated millennials and stressed out parents. 42% of respondents aged 65 and over said the same. Encouragingly for business owners, people are warming to the idea of buying holidays again. Just over a quarter (27%) of respondents say they are ready to book now, 23% will book a few weeks ahead before they travel, and 28% plan to book within a week of departing. Only 17% say they are definitely not ready to book.

Customers expect campsites to change There are huge levels of interest in camping and glamping for the summer ahead, but the majority of those polled expect campsites to reduce pitches to manage social distancing, n 53% think campsites should close one in four of their pitches n 23% expect sites to cut the number of pitches by half n Reducing pitches is just one of the steps guests want campsites to take. Among the most popular measures suggested are, n More regular and enhanced cleaning (77%) n Installing hand sanitiser stations (75%)

10

www.glampingbusiness.com

n Setting policies about onsite etiquette (72%) n Pre-allocating pitches and ensuring they are set well apart (67%) n Offering a contactless check-in and check-out (66%) n Providing advice before arrival (47%) n Moving receptions outdoors, or giving guests a mobile number to text (43%) n Adding floor markings to help with social distancing (42%) Travellers are likely to shun many of the usual shared facilities, saying they won’t use swimming pools (62%), indoor soft play (79%), games rooms (72%) and outdoor adventure playgrounds (61%) even if they are available. However, 85% expect showers to be open and almost 70% of tent and camper van guests would use them if available. 45% of respondents want sites to allocate shower and toilet facilities to guests or sets of guests. Martin Smith, founder of Campsites.co.uk, says this is an example of the challenges facing the industry for the season ahead: “Campsite owners need the Government to publish clear advice in the same way it has for other sectors, such as offices and retail. “Much of the advice that has come out so far has been geared towards holiday parks and touring sites where caravan accommodation is self contained. But the situation for tents and glamping, where shared facilities are essential, is much less clear. “Shower blocks is a good example of the uncertainty facing campsite

owners. Customers expect them to be open, but campsites don’t know if it is safe. They need help to be sure. “Campsite owners tell us that they may need to close their tent pitches and focus solely on touring which, for many, will make a bad year even worse. “There is clearly demand from customers who are ready and willing to travel, but the campsite industry needs clear advice so they can open up safely and confidently. “Visit Britain has talked about introducing a Kitemark to help accommodation owners prove they are adhering to the highest COVID19 safety standards. That sort of advice is needed urgently if campsites are to have time to put the recommendations in place for the start of summer.” Despite their concern for using many shared facilities, more than 60% of those surveyed say they will be happy to use onsite cafés and restaurants, and over 90% will go to the campsite shop. The survey suggests campsite owners face a difficult decision over whether to raise prices to try and offset their losses for the year so far. When asked if they would be happy to pay a surcharge to help cover the campsite’s additional costs, 24% said yes and 27% said no, with 49% undecided. The research is available to all campsite owners for free at Campsites.co.uk, https://www.cam psites.co.uk/resources/coronavirussurvey-results

Certainly Wood Covid Update Certainly Wood are pleased to announce that during the Covid 19 pandemic they have managed to continue production throughout the period, although the office team have been working from home. There is hope on the horizon for sites to open in July, so fingers crossed. Certainly Wood believe the opportunities for staycations will be significant not only this season, but in the years to come. They think this has the potential to be a game changer for camping and glamping so it is time to make up the lost ground and maximise sales. So, do you allow camp fires? – Certainly Wood believe the evidence is clear, that camp fires are a major selling point of any site and provides an important revenue stream. It’s also easy to address the issues of having fires on site, so do consider firepits for each pitch. This allows the fire to be off the ground to protect the grass, but also containing the fire. They highly recommend www.firepitsuk.co.uk who

have an excellent range of British made firepits. Most important however, is to ensure you only allow kiln dried logs to be burnt to minimise smoke and make the camp fire experience more enjoyable for all. This also provides far more heat, so better for cooking over and for keeping warm on those cooler summer evenings. You also need to be aware of the new ‘Woodsure Ready to Burn’ accreditation scheme which means that you will shortly only be allowed to sell wood that is approved under this scheme. This is a result of the

government’s Clean Air strategy and is aimed at reducing particulate emissions. Wet wood smokes, dry wood doesn’t. Certainly Wood are working hard to reduce plastic across their range and now have a plastic free range of products and are happy to discuss ways of working with you to further minimise plastic. They have also just launched their new KindleFlamer natural firelighter which provides a very long burn and whilst great for all fires is particularly good for charcoal barbecues.

SANIFLO HAS A PUMP FOR EVERY SITUATION Now is a good time for Glamping businesses to gear up and plan for a sudden rush of bookings.

Of course, all social distancing and enhanced sanitation protocols will need to be observed, but this puts many Glamp sites at a distinct advantage, given that accommodation is naturally spread out by at least a few metres. Indeed now might be the time to add extra pods and facilities (wash stands, WC’s, showers – even catering facilities) to prepare for the uptick in demand whilst adhering to temporary new protocols. Of course, water discharge will be a prime requirement for extending many facilities and Saniflo is well placed to advise on a range of pumping solutions whether for one small pod, multiple pods, shower blocks, catering blocks and even large chalets. A range of Sanifos underground pumps can take black and grey water waste from multiple sources and pump it up and along to mains drains, a water treatment plant or septic tank. For grey water discharge only Saniflo has a range of pumps that can take waste water from washing machines, catering sinks, showers etc and discharge it up and along a required distance. The technical team at Saniflo can advise on the best solution for every scenario. The company’s Kinedo shower cubicles already feature in many glamping structures. Swift to install the integrated package features shower

tray, opaque glass internal panels, doors and all shower brassware. No tiling or silicone and up and running on the day of the install. With exceptional availability and supply times these can be ordered and delivered in about a week. In support of the sector, Saniflo is pleased to offer 20% discount on any Eden shower cubicle – or multiple thereof – when a Sanifos 500 underground pump is purchased. This offer is available whilst stocks last and on all purchases made in 2020. The Sanifos 500 is a dual motor lifting station that can pump waste when the

sewer is above the level of the gravity drainage. Available in single or three phase it is available with cutting blades or vortex technology and has a 500litre storage tank. The Kinedo Eden is the perfect shower cubicle when space is at a premium. Available in corner and quadrant configurations with sliding or pivot doors, the unit is supplied as a complete package and includes a rain shower head, exposed thermostatic valve and single spray handset. Saniflo has remained open throughout the Coronavirus pandemic to supply pumps to emergency buildings. www.saniflo.co.uk

REOPENING CHECKLIST As sites in the UK prepare to reopen on July 4th, Will Rusbridge looks at the advice on offer to site owners. It’s worth remembering that the July 4th date is not set in stone and is dependent on the country continuing to meet the five tests set out by the Government involving the NHS, death rate, rate of infection, availability of tests and PPE, and confidence that a second peak can be avoided. On top of this, accommodation site owners will be required to follow measures to ensure the safety of their guests. Currently there has been very little follow up to the announcement, with many business owners left in the dark regarding the measures they will have to take to make their sites safe and when exactly they can reopen. We thought it would be useful to take a look at what other businesses and companies are doing throughout this crisis to get a better understanding of how best to come out of lockdown and resume business.

Booking Platforms Since the announcement made by Boris

Johnson that the hospitality sector could reopen by July 4th, online booking sites have seen large increases in bookings made, however some report that numbers are still lower than at the same time last year. With international holidays for the summer being avoided by most, the country is looking a bit closer to home for their breaks, which many are hoping will lead to a ‘staycation boom’. Online booking sites are adapting to the current crisis by offering coronavirus booking guarantees, with lower initial deposits, more flexible payment dates, and the ability to change the date of your visit depending on the lifting of restrictions. The refunding of previously un-refundable deposits is being made for any bookings that had to be cancelled due to the lockdown also. Many booking sites are also featuring glamping sites that they class as coronavirus safe. On these sites a number of measures have been taken to ensure that social distancing can still be maintained, and extra cleaning implemented.

Glamping Sites Glamping sites across the country who are preparing to reopen are adopting a number of new practices that are in line with what other business sectors are being asked to do. These are short term responses that will allow your business to transition out of lockdown immediately without any further delays. Here are some examples of what sites are doing to prepare for the end of lockdown: n Glamping sites with extra land available are making the decision to open up second fields and are moving accommodation so that each plot has more space, and guests are less likely to cross paths. Other sites are deciding to reopen at a reduced capacity, sacrificing some of their units to ensure the safety of others. n Communal areas are also being rethought with the introduction of timetables for facilities such as shower blocks and kitchen areas so that guests

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE n Diversification is important. Many businesses have been turning to diversification to see them through the lockdown. By introducing another source of income to your business you are decreasing the reliance that you have on another. The unfortunate reality is that this lockdown may not be a singular event, so it is important to keep all options available to you open. https://www.homefarmglamping.com don’t all gather in these areas at one time. Others are adding to the facilities that they already have available to make sure they do not get overcrowded. n Many are making the decision to reopen the basic facilities that they have on site, such as accommodation, and waiting to reopen the non-essential communal areas such as farm shops and group activities. n Self check-ins, are also becoming increasingly popular and are a great way to reduce contact between staff and guests. n Some sites are even going as far as to introduce one-way paths and travel routes throughout the site so that guests don’t walk past each other face to face. n Cleaning will also be more important after the lockdown has ended. Cleaning measures will need to be more stringent and more numerous as it has been proven that the virus can remain on hard surfaces for some time. Full antibacterial cleaning of units between visitors is being adopted, with more frequent cleaning of all communal facilities as well. These new measures will likely end up being more expensive, but also absolutely essential for reassuring guests that your site is safe. n The need for PPE (personal protective equipment) for returning staff will also be an area to look into as once the hospitality sector is reopened there is a good chance you will need a steady supply. n It is vital to check with your insurance provider to discuss the issue of liability should someone get sick at your site. Currently there is very little information available about this subject, so it is

important that you find out the specifics from your insurance provider. n Terms and conditions will also have to be reworked. Examples seen so far list the precautions that are being taken and the new safety measures put in place. Once government guidance is released it will be important to show that you are stringently following the advice that is being given. n Certification schemes are already in the process of being set up that will reassure guests that the government advice is being followed. While not ready yet, VisitBritain are creating such a scheme where site owners will have to complete a free online test to make sure they are following governmental guidelines and in return will be awarded with a quality mark and certification. While these are great practices to introduce to your business to get ready for the end of lockdown, it is still unclear if these measures will be enough, since there has been no update on what the Government will want to see from glamping sites once the sector is reopened. Booking site owners and glamping site owners are both urging for greater clarity from the government.

n The lockdown has also seen a change in consumer trends and how we interact with each other. The trend of experiences over material products is one that has been occurring for a while now and lockdown appears to have accelerated this, with more and more people eagerly planning how they will spend their time once restrictions have been lifted. This is great news for glamping site operators as that is exactly what they are offering, an experience. n An online presence has also never been more important than it is now. Most holidays and trips are already booked online through either a booking platform or a dedicated website. This trend has also been accelerated because of the lockdown as more people than ever are becoming familiar with booking trips themselves online. Right now, this means making sure your website is up to date, informative and eye-catching, but further down the line it will become more and more important that hospitality businesses have good online methods of communication with their customers via websites, booking platforms and social media. n Brand values appear to be becoming more important as well, so if your helping your local area in any way through this crisis, let potential customers know. Any steps that you are taking to prepare for the end of lockdown should also be made public as this will assure future guests that you are working hard to make sure your site is safe.

Long Term Changes The examples above, of how sites are preparing to reopen in the short term, are very important. They are what will allow these businesses to transition out of lockdown as quickly as possible. Long term measures will also be important going forward in preparing for a possible second spike and the possible permanent changes that might be seen in consumer trends.

Until further government guidance is released, site operators are being left to do what they think is best for their business. Ultimately, none of the preparations that you take now will be penalised, and even if some of the precautions you put in place end up unnecessary, each and every one will reassure your guests that you are putting their safety first.

POST COVID TRENDS As countries slowly roll back lockdown measures, many experts are predicting (and starting to report) that local travel will be the first type to rebound following the COVID19 crisis. But why is domestic travel expected to bounce back and what does this mean for glamping operators? There is the very real possibility that for most of the year, people won’t legally be allowed to cross many international borders, meaning if they want a summer holiday, it will have to be domestic. Additionally, even with borders opening, the restrictions imposed could severely limit most people from taking advantage of them – the idea of having to quarantine for 14+ days to enter (or reenter) a country is sure to put a halt on any long-weekend city breaks. It isn’t only external restrictions that are expected to drive this trend, however, but also the public’s reaction to this new travel landscape. A report by marketing agency Mower found that only a little over a half of US respondents would be comfortable flying after 60 days of the ‘all clear’ for travel. As people avoid the skies, they’ll be looking for more local options, especially trips that can be made in private transport such as cars and campers – avoiding the enclosed shared spaces that are now associated with increased risk. There is also the financial impact, with cheaper airlines expected to suffer, there could be far higher prices to even get in

the air. And, even then, with a severe financial crisis and massive job loss being driven by the COVID-19 crisis, fewer people are going to be able to afford to fly. Just as staycations boomed in the United States and United Kingdom following the 2008 finical crisis, they are predicted to do so again. Many glamping operators could see some benefit from this shift in trends as their rural, open-space offerings appeal to travellers who are looking to avoid the crowded transit hubs of airports and the busy streets of cities. Most glamping operators will almost certainly see a drop in international visitors, but with a shift in focus to domestic travellers, these numbers will be made up for (at least in part) by those looking to stay the same country, or even county, for their summer vacation.

appreciation for green spaces. Places that would usually occupy our spare time, restaurants, pubs, gyms etc, have all been closed for the duration of lockdown which has led to a hankering for the countryside. During lockdown, we have seen a resurgence in interest in getting out to natural beauty spots. Whether this is due to a fear of urban areas, more free time, or a lack of other pastimes (such as pubs, clubs and restaurants), or possibly a mix of all of them, people are rediscovering the joys of hiking and getting off the beaten track.

However, with guidelines shifting on an almost daily basis, the future is still uncertain – and uncertainty can be one of the most damaging states for any business.

In the UK, many camping and glamping operators are aiming to reopen in July, catching at least part of the peak UK season, while sites in Europe and the US are already open. When it comes to attracting guests in a time when money is tight and there is a natural fear of travel, glamping operators are in a fantastic position because rambling, scrambling and walking have always been a great selling point of rural tourism.

Another trend that has become apparent over the course of lockdown is a growing

POST COVID TRENDS While some of the more impressive stories about cities falling back to nature sit firmly in the realm of fiction (sorry, there weren’t any dolphins in Venice), it is true that emissions around the globe have dropped. This has meant clean skies in some of the world’s most polluted cities – notably seen in Delhi where beforeand-after photos show the startling difference in visible pollution. In other countries, this has resulted in waterways that are cleaner than they have been in generations or simply more breathable air when out for a walk. should make sure to stock up on their local trail maps, and perhaps even walk a few themselves, to make the most of this post-COVID boom and weather the storm of 2020. It is hard to predict how tourism might look for the remainder of 2020, and how it could look in the years to come, but there are certain trends that seem to be favouring glamping operators and it’s important to take advantage of these while they are here, especially ones as generally beneficial as an uptake in walkers. This growing appreciation for the countryside has also coincided with another phenomenon that has occurred during lockdown, as many people have seen a notable positive impact on their local environment, from clean water to clear skies. And, with many people now having tasted the sweet palate of unpolluted air, they’re unwilling to go back to the way things were – could this new desire for more eco-centric lives fuel a shift towards more eco-centric resorts?

More importantly, many people want to see it stay this way. In fact, according to the BBC, “Four in five [drivers polled for the AA] would take some action to reduce their impact on air quality” after experiencing the cleaner air of lockdown. This is no surprise, because in addition to the very visible improvements, the drop in pollution during lockdown has had some pretty major impacts on health, with one study finding that the cleaner air has led to “11,000 fewer deaths from pollution in the UK and elsewhere in Europe”, according to the Guardian. It’s not really a surprise that people like to breathe clean air, it’s just that for many people, it’s taken seeing clean air to really appreciate it since it is outside of our normal experience. Speaking to the National Geographic, Simon Birkett, founder and director of Clean Air in London, argued that there is now a chance to get people to reflect on this period and how it has affected them, to turn this moment into ‘a catalyst, or a

tipping point, which could get us to say “Clean air—there’s something special about it.”’ However, the shift in attitude that we have seen so far is one of personal belief as opposed to actual policy change, with many experts predicting that the pollution pendulum will swing the other direction post-COVID as countries scramble to get out from under an economic crisis at any cost – including a severe environmental one. China, for example, has already returned to preCOVID pollution levels at a time when much of the world is still in lockdown. Despite this, the fact that a reducedpollution lockdown could spur people on a personal journey to a greener future is something that should be embraced. It is, of course, part of a wider trend that we have seen in recent years that has permeated every sector, including travel. Eco-resorts were gaining traction before the world went into lockdown, but now that people are looking for ways to keep breathing clean air and reducing emissions, they could be looking at even more popularity. Of course, eco-resorts and glamping sites are facing many of the same problems as more traditional travel destinations, such as a drop in international tourism, travel restrictions, and less disposable income thanks to massive job losses across the globe. However, unlike traditional resorts, they offer exactly what people have come to want during lockdown – a clean, green place to escape. There is no doubt that glamping sites, like all other tourism-related businesses, are facing unknown times ahead and almost certainly some trouble as travel falls. However, they are also in a unique position to provide people with the green alternative that they are looking for, hopefully pulling tourism as a whole into a more environmentally sustainable future as they go. A BOOKING AGENT IS VITAL IN TIMES OF CRISIS By Tim Rees, of Quality Unearthed and Quality Cottages.

What a time to be in hospitality, or business in general! I've not known a time where there is such an immediate and direct relationship between government statements and the day to day operations of a business.

As the world opens up, new challenges come your way, and now you will be facing new difficult questions. Can your guests from Wales still come if travel in England is allowed but not Wales, or vice versa?

Staying afloat through such a tide of information is a full time job. Are you up to speed with all the latest guidelines? Did you read the update about managing laundry for enhanced cleaning protocols?

The list of challenges faced by our industry is sky high. Only those who deal with the day to day can truly understand. Having a place to go to, a support network and community of like minded individuals is so helpful. In our sector, a glamping agency is a great support.

If you have a glamping operation, you will have gone through the fire fighting stage of Covid-19, suddenly faced with questions about when guests can arrive, having to let them down that their break can’t go ahead and forecast forward without knowing when any of this will be over.

In ‘normal’ times, agents are there to take the pressure off you, the owner, by managing all enquiries, bookings, moves, cancellations, vouchers and direction info, whilst running big marketing campaigns.

There are a lot of big spends that only agents can realistically justify such as PR, professional photography, and online travel agency management. They generate more bookings, often at a better value, and will manage the post booking process so that your guests come to visit you again and again. Agents of course charge for this, but believe me, the margins are small. No agency can do a thorough job at 10%. Sure you can list on a webpage, but all quality agents will be doing MUCH more than that. Getting what you pay for has never been more true than working with a quality agent right now. 10% will pay wage bills, but it won’t pay for the extra Pay Per Click, updated

photography, or the journalist visit, or even more advanced automation, personalisation and segmentation that Business Intelligence and good email platforms facilitate.

does not fully open, they may lose seasonal jobs in the travel and hospitality industry.

If you weren't sure about the value of a quality agent, Covid has shown us one mighty example.

Despite all these challenges I write about, adversity creates opportunity. With the sad impact of this years’ foreign holidays, it is for UK based glamping providers to step in, step up and deliver the special experience we dream of delivering to our guests.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, we are keeping an eye on what politicians are doing and saying. We also have the clout to lobby them. It is important the voice of the glamping world is heard. A quality agent during these times will be working on the fine dance between you, the glamping owner, the guest and the community. We know guests have been put under enormous financial pressure and may wish to have a refund. We understand that some people in your community are worried that by opening your glamping structure you invite more risk. We also recognise that many people in your community worry that if travel

Agents have these conversations for you.

When Wales announced it would open self-contained accommodation on the 19th June, we saw a 122% increase in bookings numbers on the previous weekend. The average order value of bookings taken during lockdown is also up 33%. If guests do end up taking less holidays, they will want quality holidays. Guests will feel reassured that an agent has visited a property and it a) exists and

b) is up to the quality described. By being part of one, you also demonstrate that you are adhering to certain standards. Glamping is having a tough year, but the post covid tourism landscape could be very sunny for quality glamping offerings. In summary, even in ‘normal’ times, agents work around the clock to make your accommodation business more successful. Sure it might sting to work long to invest in a property only to spend a part on an agents commission, but in return you have a team of sales people working every day of the week, a marketing team doing everything from OTA integrations to taking awesome photos, an owners support team there to do the fiddly bits like analysing and changing pricing 18 months ahead of time, and a team lobbying on your behalf. The silver lining is that quality glamping outfits will be in demand.

NAKED FLAME HAS IT COVERED! Naked Flame Eco-Tubs Ltd recently announced a retro-fit liner system available for their solid wood tubs. Many owners have been concerned about costs involved in changing their fleet of solid wood tubs to

plastic lined models at a time when thorough and easy cleaning is essential following new guidelines to keep visitors safe from Coronavirus. This system allows owners to fit the liner kit to their original tub easily without the need for changing the tub itself. Owner Gareth Edwards explained, “We have worked extremely hard over the winter season to design this kit to enable our owners to update their original tubs to a liner model. This will save thousands of pounds compared to replacing the whole package and keeps the aesthetics of the natural look owners are attracted to. It really is the best of both worlds for a fraction of the price. This also gives our customers

the confidence to add further units, already fitted with this system and keep uniformity on their site.” Kits can be supplied in 4 different colours (dark grey, light grey, blue & black) and include the new seating layout as well as a beautiful, one-piece decorative edge to hide the top edge of the liner. The original lid supplied with the tub will still fit the new design. The full kit including colour of choice, seats and decorative edge start from £950 + vat for the LuvTub model. Any new tubs purchased throughout June/July can take advantage of the free liner offer. For more information contact Naked Flame on 01484 766233 and see more at www.nakedtubs.com

TRUDOMES’ ANSWER TO RAIN, SHINE OR SOCIAL DISTANCING As businesses look ahead and consider how they will trade in the ‘new normal’, UK based TruDomes says that the key to success is the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. “At TruDomes we’ve adapted too,” says Sales Director, Kelda Bassett, “we have invested in developing new products to help businesses face the present challenge.” The 40-years established engineering and manufacturing business moved into the glamping space when they launched their Geodesic Dome glamping spaces, and haven’t looked back. “Design, engineering and innovation are in our DNA,” adds Kelda, “building on our range of home grown and British made Glamping Domes we are delighted to add two new structures to our range, designed especially for social distancing in the glamping, hospitality, leisure and events industry.” Last month TruDomes launched what they call their ‘Dining Yurt’ and ‘Dining Cube’, but actually their uses are much more flexible than just dining.

“The ‘Yurt’ and ‘Cube’ are perfect for restaurant table isolation and outdoor dining all year round, and in addition to socially distanced dining they also make great reception spaces, ‘support bubble’ spaces for care homes, and summer houses” adds Kelda, “it’s not just about responding to current concerns either, they also offer protection from the typical British summer which we’ll always have – no more rainy meals or dashing for cover.” The Yurt and Cube structures work with ground anchoring for hard surface or grass, can be installed in one place, or used as temporary structures. Engineered using the highest quality materials and events industry grade PVC covers, they are not only sturdy, they’re also impressively easy to set up and take down offering the flexibility to be used in different locations according to need. Covers allow a range of options including roll up windows, vents and mesh screens for ultimate comfort in all weather. “The uncertainty of the current situation means our customers are looking for solutions that offer them value now, and in the future. Our

multi-purpose shelters do just that by solving social distancing problems, and offering protection from the weather, with attractive shelters that will operate for years to come.” “We are dedicated to offering you the best solution to ensure our customers can give their guests the very best experience.” www.trudomes.com

PRODUCTNEWS SOCOTEC “BUSINESS READY” INITIATIVE SOCOTEC, one of the UK’s leading providers of testing, inspection and compliance services, has developed ‘Business Ready’, a new initiative designed to help organisations prepare as they resume operations in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic. With many businesses and their facilities placed on pause following the COVID19 outbreak, SOCOTEC has developed support packages to help organisations safely reopen premises following the easing of lockdown restrictions.

Alternatively, organisations can opt for the Secure Plus Package, which features all of the above benefits, as well as a full verification service once the risk assessment has been completed, plus access to consultancy support for one month following the training.

In the UK, the packages are split into three key areas – Secure, Assurance and Certification – each of which offers an increasing level of support and expertise to ensure organisations are adhering to relevant legislation and best safety practices to lower the risk of viral transmission in the workplace.

For an additional level of support, SOCOTEC’s Assurance Package offers a complete audit of company premises in line with the latest government guidance and safety measures regarding COVID19. Once this audit has been undertaken, a report with customised recommendations and any corrective actions to comply with COVID-19 guidelines will be issued. Businesses will then be provided with a certificate of assurance once SOCOTEC has received evidence that the corrective actions have been implemented.

SOCOTEC’s Secure Package comprises two hours of virtual training in the form of the COVID-19 remote Risk Assessment course, which is accompanied by audit materials for self-

which determines the presence of Coronavirus on surfaces across a wide range of workplace environments. SOCOTEC’s Certification Package provides organisations with the highest level of support, equipping them with the confidence that their organisation is adhering to all of the relevant legislation, safety measures and guidelines related to COVID-19. In addition to certification and training services, the Certification Package also guarantees communication with employee representative bodies and delivers information regarding safety and certification to the relevant stakeholders and customers. PRODUCTNEWS COULD FEVER SCREENING BE THE KEY TO GETTING TOURISM BACK ON ITS FEET POST LOCKDOWN?

As we approach phase two of the UK’s response to the COVID-19 outbreak, attention is turning to solutions that will allow businesses to reopen and safely resume trading as soon as possible. Unique Fire and Security, based in the South of England, believes that fever screening technology will be a vital piece of the armour to help businesses move towards a new normality. Unique is already working with several businesses across the UK to install fever screening technology at their premises. The cameras will help to detect carriers of coronavirus who are presenting with high temperatures, before they potentially infect colleagues or visitors. The company believes that this technology has the potential become as widespread as CCTV cameras as the country emerges from lockdown and will be a crucial element of the solution that allows businesses to reopen. Fever screening cameras provide a safe and fast way to detect those with a temperature entering a building. The system can detect elevated skin-surface temperatures in moving crowds such as passengers, guests and shoppers, with accuracy up to ± 0.3° C. The technology can simultaneously read the skin-surface temperature of the heads of multiple people within one second, accurately targeting potential risk in a non-contact environment.

Bradley Williams, Director of Unique Group explains: “Fever screening is a new technology being brought to the market as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak, offering businesses a solution to prevent the potential spread of coronavirus amongst their workforce or onto their customers. “We are already in contact with a number of businesses across a range of sectors including care homes, schools and transport providers who are keen to install systems to limit the spread of the virus, ultimately ensuring limited staff sickness and isolation, increased confidence and a speedy adaptation to ‘the new normal’. “Being able to quickly and safely spot someone with a fever entering the premises allows businesses to offer an enhanced level of personal security which extends beyond social distancing measures, so it isn’t a surprise that our customers have already taken a keen interest in this technology. We are expecting to see a substantial increase in sales and installations of this technology over the coming weeks and months as the current lockdown restrictions are relaxed, and we expect fever screening technology to play an important part in allowing businesses to reopen, and getting tourism back on its feet.” Fever screening technology is already being used extensively by businesses in Ireland and was embraced across China and Korea earlier this year. Currently around 100 fever screening units have been installed in various locations in the UK, including bus depots and

healthcare environments, and are expected to be installed in airports, hospitals, schools, restaurants and retail outlets as lockdown restrictions are eased. Bradley believes that without widespread use of fever technology as evidenced in other countries, the UK is at risk of suffering from a longer lockdown transition than necessary. He added: “There has already been discussion in the media on how the UK has been slower to respond to the coronavirus crisis than many other countries, which has sadly resulted in the UK suffering from one of the highest death tolls across the globe. “How to get people back to work and businesses back in operation, without fear of a second wave of infection, is a question on everyone’s lips. Fever screening technology helps answer that question – and it’s vital for our economy that as a nation, we don’t find ourselves at a further disadvantage by failing to use the technology that’s already available to us.” At present, only direct VASP Partners of the manufacturers such as Unique Fire and Security can supply and support the units. Unique Fire and Security is accredited by the Security Systems and Alarms Inspection Board (SSAIB) to install fever screening technology in premises across the UK. Please visit uniquefireandsecurity.co.uk/feverscreening for further information on fever screening technology.

PRODUCTNEWS After making the switch from graphic design to tree surgery in his mid-twenties, Tim Hill then went on to found Twentyeight Trees... when he turned 28! Now two years later and with an ever-growing order book, the time was right to invest in a woodchipper and it was a GreenMech Arborist 130 that fitted the bill. Having previously hired chippers when required, Tim is quickly noticing both the practical and economical benefits of owning his own.

ARB 130 ARRIVES RIGHT ON TIME FOR TWENTYEIGHT TREES

Twentyeight Trees undertake a variety of tree and hedge maintenance projects in and around Wiltshire. “Over the last 18 months, we were hiring in chippers on average three times a week which is not only expensive but comes with the stress of looking after and safely storing a machine that’s not your own.” With the majority of Tim’s work being domestic in nature, he knew that when it came to buying a chipper, a small machine that could easily navigate residential streets and restricted access properties and gardens was what he needed.

came out on top. Simple things like the fact the Arb 130 is fitted with a handbrake, which makes manoeuvring the chipper on sloped driveways or paths much easier, and the foldable discharge chute which makes storage of it nice and easy. Another positive, again simple, is the fact it has a bonnet – not all chippers do! With outdoor working, in particular the weather and risk of debris, it gives the engine valuable protection as well as making the chipper better visually.”

LAKESIDE RESORT DIVERSIFIES INTO AUSTRIA’S FIRST LUXURY GLAMPING SITE 32

www.glampingbusiness.com

Set in the stunning scenery of South Carinthia, Lakeside Petzen Glamping is heralded as the first luxury glamping resort in Austria and is a diversification of a well-established camping and fixed-unit resort that already exists at the site. It offers a range of freestanding accommodation, including safari tents on the ground and “in the sky,” modern mobile homes, as well as activities and luxury services. Located in the southernmost region of Austria, in the eastern Alps, this new initiative balances the natural seclusion that has come to be expect from high-end glamping resorts with the convenience of existing resort facilities. Additionally, it is located less than an hour from the region’s capital city of Klagenfurt making it highly accessible whilst retaining a natural feel.

Luxury Tents The bulk of the glamping accommodation is luxury tents, which the resort divides into three distinct offerings — Couple’s Tents, Family Tents, and the highly unique “Sky Tents.” The Couple’s Tents are spacious safari tents with a double bed, full bathroom, and terrace dining area, as well as a sleeping couch for those who wish to use these tents to accommodate small families. Aiming to create a romantic atmosphere for couple retreats, the Austrian resort has pitched the tents aside fireplaces which set the tone perfectly as well as extending the usable space outside the fabric walls. The Family Tents are again safari-style but can accommodate up to six people with two double beds, two single beds and a sleeping couch. These feature the same comfort and luxury as the couple’s tents but also boast a kitchen, adding an extra level of convenience for those looking to glamp with children of any age.

Spacious Structures In addition to the range of luxury tents on offer at Lakeside Petzen Glamping, there are also several 43 m² mobile homes, constructed just this year. Each of these self-contained units offers two bedrooms, accommodating up to four adults and two children, as well as a kitchen, a living/dining room and, of course, a terrace that allows guests to soak in the natural beauty which sets this site apart. This very modern accommodation is also fitted with air conditioning and electric heaters to ensure guests can make the most of the site throughout the year. More Than Just a Glampsite In creating this luxury glamping site, the resort utilizes its existing facilities with an onsite swimming pool, for when guests don’t wish to wild-swim in the lake, as well as three saunas, a bar and a nearby restaurant serving up local cuisine. Moreover, Lakeside Petzen Glamping offer various add-on activities to keep guests entertained including rentable paddleboats, SUPs and e-bikes. This is in addition to the available nature-based activities such as hiking, climbing and mountaineering for which the area is so well suited. In addition to offering Family Tents, the site further ensures they have a strong family offering by providing an onsite playground and water bouncy castle. Beyond this, there is also WIFI that covers the entire site — enabling

connection to the wider world while maintaining the feeling of natural seclusion. The combination of all these high-end facilities and activities means that while the site is close enough to towns and the region’s capital city for a day trip, guests never actually need to leave — a perfect example of creating not just a glamping site, but a glamping ecosystem. Overall, this new glamping site covers six hectares with seven mobile homes, five couple’s safari tents, two family safari tents and three “Sky Tents.” This is in addition to the existing camping pitches, permanent camper pitches and fixed accommodation, making this not only the first luxury glamping resort in Austria, but an impressive generalist resort in its own right. With such a wide variety of accommodation, as well as numerous activities for guests of any age, the new Lakeside Petzen Glamping resort is sure to attract visitors from around the world, whether they are couples looking for a romantic getaway, families who require an inclusive vacation, or visitors wishing to make the most of the regions lakes and mountains. www.pirkdorfersee.at/de/glamping/lak eside-petzen-glamping/glampingresort-kaernten

One of the most unique offerings of Lakeside Petzen Glamping are the Sky Tents, which place guests in a tree or on custom stilts. This creates a different twist on the classic safari tent, with raised terraces that make the most of the site’s stunning scenery. These lofty tents can accommodate up to four people with two double beds, making them versatile enough to cater for couples, families and groups of friends.

ACCESS ALL AREAS (SAFELY)

HOW TO ATTRACT CUSTOMERS TO SAFELY ENJOY GLAMPING HOLIDAYS

With social distancing still a priority, how can glamping site managers safely attract customers for the summer season? Here, Nick Cowley, managing director at leading window and door manufacturer Euramax, explores the access technologies that can help ensure holidaymakers have a safe and enjoyable break.

Keep it clean Glamping site managers must ensure a deep clean is conducted prior to each check in, making sure disinfectant is used and particular attention is paid to all touch points within the holiday unit. Extra care must be taken by cleaning staff to prevent cross contamination between holiday units. This can be achieved through frequent hand sanitation, changing into fresh personal protective equipment (PPE) and wiping down cleaning equipment before entering another unit. As well as ensuring site staff take precautions, it may be wise to advise visitors on the safety measures they can take. This could include information provided on the glamping site’s website or in the booking confirmation email. Equipping glamping units with soaps, hand sanitisers, face masks and disinfectant sprays or wipes can further ensure their safety.

Get SMART Remote access is often associated with industrial processes, allowing plant manufacturing facility managers to monitor production lines across the globe. However, glamping site owners

can take inspiration from this method of supervision and create systems that support unit management with minimal contact. Digital locks have become a popular way of transferring access to guests without hassle — and they can do much more than simply opening and closing the door. Guests receive a unique access code via their smartphone, which remains active for the duration of their stay. Authorised users simply point their phone in the direction of the door lock to gain access, reducing the need to handle keys and contact with frequently touched areas on windows and doors. Remote access also eliminates the need for contact between guests and site owners upon checking in and out. QR codes are activated and disactivated when guests enter and leave the unit, meaning physical and property safety remain uncompromised. In order for SMART technology to work, full Wi-Fi access must be available across the entire glamping site. This has the added bonus of providing visitors with more entertainment inside their glamping unit.

Maintain fun Promoting safety measures is important, but glamping sites should still focus on ensuring visitors have an enjoyable stay. With restaurants awaiting a return to normality, glamping site managers could consider offering a takeaway service so visitors can still enjoy a tasty treat. Recommending local outdoor activities, such as hiking, rock pooling and bird watching, can attract customers to glamping sites despite the closure of onsite activities. However, visitors can still enjoy exploring the glamping site safely if a one-way system, with two metre markers, is incorporated. By keeping to strict hygiene and social distancing measures, glamping site managers can invite customers to a welcomed holiday post lockdown. Euramax is experienced in manufacturing windows and doors for the holiday and leisure sector and can incorporate SMART technology from the beginning of the design process. This saves time and cost while also reducing maintenance, as there is no need to remove windows or doors after they have been installed to retrofit technology changes. www.euramaxuk.com

USING SOCIAL MEDIA TO TELL YOUR STORY… People buy from people and social media has broken down the walls that businesses and brands were able to hide behind and put people back at the forefront of their business and their storytelling. Throughout lockdown I’ve shared daily content prompts with my audience to help them keep their channels going, find inspiration when they had none and engage with their audiences. In this article I’ll share five things we have learned in those 12-weeks, including my recipe for social media PIE – Plan, Inspire and Engage. Plan – Planning your content in advance saves you a lot of time in the long run and allows you to concentrate on doing what you do best – running your glamping business. There are loads of ways you can create a steady stream of planned content for your business. Use what’s already on your website, such as services and blogs to break your content down into bite-sized chunks. Look at what relevant key dates and awareness days there are coming up that you could tap into. And look at what’s happening in your business – the day to day running of it might seem mundane to you but to your audience, it’s interesting. Scheduling tools such as Later and Buffer, or even Facebook’s own Creator Studio mean you can schedule content to go out as and when you want it to. Inspire – Posting inspiring content will emotively engage your audience in your business. To do that, make sure you have some great images of your visitors

Social media is a vital tool to tell your story. Not only does it put you in full control of your own PR, you can give a much broader behind the scenes look at how your business runs. enjoying your facilities. They might be a couple relaxing in the hot tub, a family running through the grass or a group of friends around a campfire. The aim of this imagery is to inspire your audiences to want to be the people in the photos. Engage – Don’t just post and go. Plan in some time every day to engage on your social media channels with other glamping businesses or on channels where you’re likely to find your target market, such as local area tourism groups or national tourism pages. By commenting, responding and engaging as your business, you’re raising its profile without really trying. Look at the wider picture – Your business is just part of the offer that makes up tourism in your local area. Inspire your potential visitors by sharing some of the great experiences they can have when they visit you. Are you near any attractions, beaches or walks that might inspire a target audience? Is there a wonderful restaurant nearby that you could collaborate with on a package? Make sure you tag your local tourism boards so that they can see the ways you’re supporting them locally.

Give them something new – Audiences love a bit of anticipation for something new, even if it’s seemingly small to you. Do some teasers, build up the excitement and then do a big reveal on your social media pages. It will get people talking about you and to you, which is what PR is all about.
