Welcome to GlBUSINESSmping

Welcome to our September issue and the Official Show Guide for The Glamping Show!

We are proud to be celebrating 10 years of The Glamping Show in 2024 – and International Glamping Business magazine’s 10th anniversary. It has been an honour to watch this beloved industry grow and develop in to more than any of us could have imagined.

In this Official Show Guide, you will find a full list of the exhibitors, who they are and what they can do for you – as well as a round-up of the speakers participating in the seminar programme.

Kerry Roy brings us another column on the future of robotic staff and Neil Baxendale explains the potential outcome of poor financial smarts and how to avoid being a “glamping horror story”.

The new Glamping Industries Trade Association (GITAUK) will be launching at The Glamping Show, with Derry Green and John White leading the charge, which marks a significant milestone in our rapidly growing sector.

We interview Matthew Parkinson from ÖÖD Mirror House on their glamping takeover and find out the balance between luxury and eco-friendly design. We also feature some of the leading companies in the hot tub and sauna sector, so you can find the right fit for you and increase your site’s nightly rate.

Here’s to ten years and many more to come!

SARAH DUSEK SHARES INSIGHTS ON SCALING BIG BUSINESS WITH NEW BOOK

Women are granted less than 2% of all venture capital annually, a staggering statistic that highlights the challenges faced by female entrepreneurs. In industries like glamping, where creativity and innovation are essential, the lack of representation in leadership roles means we all miss out on diverse perspectives that could drive the industry forward.

Sarah Dusek, a venture capitalist, entrepreneur, and co-founder of the eco-travel company Under Canvas, understands these challenges firsthand. Her latest book, Thinking Bigger, is a vital resource for women in business, offering practical tools and insights to help them navigate the complex world of venture capital and scale their enterprises to new heights.

Drawing on her journey of turning Under Canvas into a multi-milliondollar company, Dusek has shared the essential strategies that women entrepreneurs need to succeed. Central to her approach is the pitch deck, a ten-page formula that communicates

a business’s story, data, and metrics to potential investors. In Thinking Bigger, Dusek not only demystifies this tool but also provides a step-by-step guide for women to craft their own compelling pitch decks.

Beyond the technical aspects, Dusek has addressed the psychological barriers that often hold women back, such as imposter syndrome and fear of failure. She encourages women to reframe their mindset, embrace risk, and push the boundaries of what they believe is possible. With questions for reflection at the end of each chapter, Thinking Bigger is designed to help readers internalize these lessons and apply them to their own businesses.

For glamping site operators, Dusek’s insights are particularly valuable. The glamping industry thrives on innovation, sustainability, and creating unique experiences—all areas where diverse perspectives are crucial. Dusek’s success with Under Canvas serves as a blueprint for how glamping entrepreneurs can

scale their businesses while staying true to their eco-conscious values.

As co-founder of Enygma Ventures, a venture capital fund focused on supporting underrepresented female founders in Africa, Dusek is committed to leveling the playing field for women entrepreneurs. Her work in Africa and her experience with Under Canvas are testaments to her belief in the power of women-led businesses to drive meaningful change.

Thinking Bigger is more than just a business book; it’s a call to action for women in the glamping industry and beyond to seize the opportunities before them, access the capital they need, and build the businesses of their dreams.

For a review copy of Thinking Bigger please contact: Katherine Lowe, The Oxford Publicity Partnership Ltd, Tel: 07887 948795 or email: katherine. lowe@oppuk.co.uk. The book will be widely available to purchase in Autumn 2024.

VISITOR INFORMATION

Welcome to the 10th Anniversary of The Glamping Show!

A lot in the industry has changed since the event was launched in 2015, and there is a lot that is new at the show. However, we are glad to welcome back exhibitors and visitors who have been with us for a number of years, as well as those who are joining us for the first time.

The only trade event in the UK dedicated to the glamping industry, The Glamping Show is the go-to event for anyone looking for products and information to support, refresh or start their outdoor hospitality business.

From structures of all kinds, shapes and sizes, to furnishings, hot tubs and business services, this event is fertile ground for gathering information, brainstorming and decision-making. The expert-led seminar programme is also entirely new this year, with relevant topics to help you along your business journey more than ever before.

Opening Times

Thursday 19th September - 09:30 – 17:00

Friday 20th September - 09:30 – 17:00

Saturday 21st September - 09:30 – 15:30

Is my ticket valid for all three days of the show?

Yes! Your ticket is for the Thursday, Friday & Saturday. Your e-ticket will be exchanged for a badge at the gate and you can use this every day.

Do I have to pay to attend seminars?

No – all seminars are free. The location of the seminar theatre is signposted throughout the show, and information on our speakers and sessions can be found in this Official Show Guide.

No booking required, but do get there early to save a seat as the sessions can get busy.

Can I bring my dog?

Absolutely – we’re all dog lovers here, but we do ask that you keep them on a leash.

Can I bring my children?

Yes, children may attend if they are accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times. Each child must be registered individually and must wear their badge in case they get lost. Please be aware this is a trade event and so may be little of interest to keep little ones entertained.

Will there be food at The Glamping Show?

Of course! There are a number of food and drink vendors onsite, as well as a nearby café on the Stoneleigh Park grounds.

Who can I contact with further enquiries?

Please visit the information desk at the show entrance or email karencooke@swanevents.co.uk.

How the wrong decision can end in disaster FINANCE SMARTS FOR GLAMPING BUSINESSES

Recently, I was acquainted with a couple in their late 50s who had decided to set up their own glamping business in 2019, with a plan to acquire 4 glamping pods. Once they had sourced the pods and secured the necessary planning permission, they went to market to find a suitable finance solution to fund their exciting new business venture.

This couple owned a very beautiful home that had been in the family for over 50 years, valued at around £1 million with 5 acres of land. So, after a brief bit of research they were introduced to a mortgage broker, who was pleased to offer the couple a £300k bridging loan to acquire the new pods. This loan included £200k for the pods themselves, £50k for infrastructure and £50k to settle their outstanding mortgage. The security? Their family home.

This was an excellent deal for the mortgage company, as their offer for the couple was £300k advance with the security of £950k from the property. And for the couple, it was incredibly easy as they did not have to provide a business plan for their new glamping venture – they simply needed to offer the security of their family home for a smaller advance. In their minds, the new business would easily be able to afford these payments, so they went ahead with the loan.

In December 2019, the infrastructure works were completed and the pods were installed in January 2020, ready to go for the first season.

Then, 2 months later… Covid! As you might imagine, this huge unforeseen event meant that trading that season did not happen, as it didn’t for many operators in the glamping sector, nor did it the season

after. In fact, it was not until the summer of 2022 – 18 months later – that they began to trade. 18 months of money going out, and 18 months of nothing coming in!

Because of this, the couple were falling behind on their monthly repayments, and the interest was mounting up month by month. For the mortgage company, this was great news! The rising debt meant more money for them, and the fallback was selling the couple’s home in order to get their money back. It was a win-win.

Sadly, the latter has now happened, and the family have been forced to sell their home and move elsewhere. And, with the sale proceeds from the home minus all the charges from the mortgage company, this has left them with very little and their dreams totally shattered.

This awful story is just one example of some of the devastating effects the wrong

Finance - It’s something we don’t love to talk about, but something we should know more about

financial advice can have on any glamping business. Sometimes, you might believe you are receiving good advice, particularly if you speak with a financial advisor who has lots of experience and strong knowledge, but this does not mean they will have your best interests at heart, or know your sector like they should.

Finance - It’s something we don’t love to talk about, but something we should know more about

Whether you’re a new business, or have an established company and are in the market for new glamping equipment, obtaining finance for your purchase can be an inevitable part of the process. With the right finance product, you will be well on your way to a successful investment. However, with the wrong one, it can be a whole other story.

During my time working as a finance professional in the hospitality and leisure industries for over 20 years, I have had the pleasure of working with many wonderful people in the glamping industry. But, equally, the misfortune of encountering business hopefuls who have been taken advantage of by finance “professionals” who have left them in difficult situations that could have been avoided with the right advice.

Here’s another story for you: I worked with a trampoline park business who were planning to open 3 new sites and, therefore, were looking to use a funding solution in order to help them on their new venture.

They had previously worked with a wellknown broker, but the broker was unable to acquire the full amount of money that they needed for their business. When they came to speak with us, we managed to get the full package they needed, and so they were happy to work with us instead.

It transpired that three of the lenders we were working with had also issued acceptances to the other broker. Once this

broker discovered this was the case, he decided to phone up the lenders and tell them that new information had come to light which made them think the customer wasn’t credit worthy. His attitude was that if he wasn’t going to get the business, nobody could have it.

It also transpired later that the interest rate the customer was given by the broker was 3%, when it was in fact 32%!

In this case, we managed to convince the lenders to reinstate the offers (crisis averted), but it does really go to show that there are people operating in the market who simply do not have your best interest at heart, and are looking to line their own pockets at the expense of others.

So, what is the lesson to be learned in all this?

When looking for a finance solution for your glamping business, or for any business, you absolutely must engage with a certified, trusted advisor who looks at the whole

market and can give you full transparency when it comes to funding solutions.

You need to speak to someone who has a solid reputation. Someone who understands the importance of a business plan. Someone who can clearly articulate affordability issues to you so that you understand the importance of cash flow when it comes to purchasing a finance product. Someone who understands your sector specifically and can provide tailored advice.

And how do you go about that?

At my talk at The Glamping Show on 20th September, I’ll be talking more on how to go about finding an accredited and reputable finance professional to help you avoid your own finance horror story, as well as some of the specifics involved in acquiring the right sort of finance, such as the importance of a business plan.

Join me and Trevor Pirie, Vice Chairman of The Guild of Business Finance Professionals, in Theatre 1 at 11am.

If you’re an avid fan of Robocop and The Matrix, the future is no longer just a vision of scenes from movies like Back To The Future, but a new type of colleague or even companion for the likes of Elon Musk: which is real robots taking over the world…

In the hotel industry, sometimes it feels like the future is now. As many of the leading hotel brands have started using robots to improve the guest experience. In fact, a few have been testing it for some time. The world’s first robot hotel opened in 2015, located in Nagasaki, Japan called Henn na Hotel (meaning ‘Weird Hotel’). It employs robots throughout the hotel for information, reception, storage and check-in and check-out services, utilising voice and face recognition technology. Replacing human service with robots has evoked mixed opinions within the hospitality industry amongst both staff and guests alike. Many self-catering accommodations, modern hotels and even some glamping resorts are offering self check-in services along with personalised information apps at the scan of a QR code. The future is not just now, it has been present in the hospitality industry for some years.

My first encounter with a staffed robot was in a hotel bar when two – actually rather cute –dinky sized robots approached me asking if I would like a drink. It was the blue and pink dickie bows to define each one’s robot sex that added a cute factor… not like a human but more so like a pet you wanted to take home and help you do the house chores! No need to wait for my drink to be served at the bar, room service from the bow tied bots was also an option as they swept across the floor like a silent version of a Hetty hoover into the lift, onto whichever floor level and room number their service was called for. By the end of my stay, they began to feel strangely human-like.

Are bot staff the future to reducing costs and bettering operations?

From increased time efficiency, artificial intelligence offers programmed information that is consistent to coordinate with the facilities, services and local information in multiple languages to effectively communicate with guests; not forgetting waiter service, room service and cleaning operations. It is no surprise that the global market for hotel robots is expected to grow from $79 million in 2020 to $338 million by 2025 at a compound annual growth rate of 32.8 percent, according to a report by

MarketsandMarkets. This growth is being driven by the need for efficient and costeffective solutions.

Benefits to employing a robot

Although the investment of a robot can be a high cost initially, you are sure to accelerate overall cost reductions of human staff salaries, as well as eliminate the need of legal staff contracts, holiday, sick pay, paid parental leave and dismissal rights along with all other complicated human rights laws that are associated with employment. That is, of course, if the world doesn’t get even crazier, adding human rights laws for robots too!

They don’t get tired: they can work 15–20hour shifts on one charge – a popular option for 24-hour hotels, whom can offer robot service during the ghost hours, rather than paying a member of staff to sit doing the bare minimum during night hours.

Financially, it establishes a cost saving benefit to the employers, but where does it then leave the 320 million people who are employed in the Travel and Tourism sector worldwide?

Working in harmony with humans

As time efficient and cost effective as bot staff are, robotics-related offerings tend to be focused on a specific function, such as vacuuming or delivering certain items

to guests, rather than multidimensional performance of tasks identical to humans. The preference for many employers of robots in today’s market is to not discard human employees, but to assist in allowing employees to do their work better, more efficiently and more quickly, whilst the robot staff do more of the ‘running around’ tasks such as room service, food and beverage service and towel service. Automation can also alleviate staff shortages.

For a majority of accommodation providers, finding good cleaning staff can be a challenge. Although robots are not yet as effective at cleaning as humans, they are serving a daily purpose that helps relieve the manpower of physical housekeeping chores, whilst maintaining more frequency of cleaning public areas (especially hoovering which has seen substantial growth also within domestic households). The use of robots in public areas is still a novelty and the technology does not always respond correctly, as developments to reaching superior standards of robotic service continue.

Other than being purely technologically reliant on a robot functioning to perform 100% accurately all of the time, most guests appear to be warming to the Wall-E type robotic service culture that is still unique and novel amongst travel and tourism.

Interview with ÖÖD Mirror House REFLECTING NATURE

International Glamping Business spoke with Matthew Parkinson, UK & Ireland Manager at ÖÖD Mirror House, to find out more about their takeover in the glamping sector.

What inspired the creation of ÖÖD Mirror House, and how does it cater specifically to the needs of glamping operators?

Growing up immersed in nature, Jaak and Andreas Tiik knew first-hand what it really meant to get lost and found between the wild rivers, bogs and woodlands of Estonia. As it turns out, this rare gift of experiencing the bounty of a country covered over 50% by a blanket of forest would later on find itself the sole inspiration behind ÖÖD.

During a weekend hike, the two brothers wanted to elevate their trip with an overnight stay, but without the typical one-size-fits-all hotel experience. They wanted something different – something that would not cut them off from a natural experience, yet give a sense of comfort and relaxation like no other. Outdated

log cabins in short of light and spirit just didn’t cut it any longer and surely there were many nature aficionados on the same thought frequency.

This particular realisation inspired them to intertwine the yearning for nature, seclusion and rest into one unique whole – a type of accommodation that would not only change the way people experience nature, but also change the industry.

Can you describe the key features of ÖÖD Mirror House structures that make them particularly suitable for glamping sites?

In its initial years, ÖÖD delivered its innovative houses worldwide, from the remote corners of Iceland to sunny California and vibrant Ghana, showcasing their houses’ exceptional engineering designed to withstand extreme weather conditions.

Today, ÖÖD mirror houses grace diverse terrains, from the lush Mexican Yucatan jungle to Vermont’s Green Mountains and Norway’s

Tustnastabben foothills, continually adding to their list of remarkable destinations.

ÖÖD mirror houses combine striking aesthetics with practicality and comfort, meticulously considering every detail for an effortless stay. What sets them apart is the awe-inspiring 180-degree floor-to-ceiling glass facade, seamlessly connecting guests with nature. Prioritizing environmental integrity, ÖÖD’s houses feature near-invisible designs that leave landscapes unspoiled with engineering made to stand the test of time, creating a visually non-existent footprint.

What materials are used in ÖÖD Mirror House constructions, and how do they ensure durability and sustainability in various climates?

Our houses now exist in over 25 countries worldwide in a range of difference terrains and climates from Norway to Mexico and Scotland to Ghana. Built primarily from steel, glass and aluminium, the structures are built to last a generation. Underfloor heating comes as standard and a dual system air con unit ensures comfortable temperatures year round.

Matthew Parkinson

How customizable are ÖÖD Mirror House units for glamping operators looking to create a unique and branded experience for their guests?

We’ve listened to our customers over the years and have developed a lineup that we’re confident matches our customers needs at a range of differing price points. From our reflective mini “Glamping House” to our most popular fully serviced “Signature House” through to our the “Möön” and “Glääzy’ units.

We do occasionally take on fully customised projects, however we tend to stick closely to our existing range. Interior soft furnishings are always customisable.

Can you share some success stories or case studies where ÖÖD Mirror House units have significantly enhanced a glamping business?

We have some fantastic success stories both from private customers and through our innovative ‘partnership model’. Our partners in Kirtlington, Oxfordshire generated close to 500k in revenue with 7 units in their first year.

In Iceland, some of our units command upwards of 600 USD per night when matched with a stunning location and motivated site owner. The key to the success is that our units are not only built to an extremely high standard but they reflect the true nature of a place, seamlessly telling the story of the location while remaining unique in each and every landscape they exist.

What are the logistical considerations for setting up an ÖÖD Mirror House unit, and how does your team support glamping operators through this process?

There are a series of considerations to think about. From planning permission and licensing to layout, servicing and guest experience on site. Alongside local expertise, we work with a site owner through every step of the way to ensure the project goes smoothly. The goal is always to have a seamless installation, a plug and play scenario.

How does ÖÖD Mirror House address the balance between luxury and eco-friendliness in its designs?

Our strategy is to use extremely durable and long lasting materials that will last a generation. What we see time and again in the industry are buildings that are not built to stand the test of time or that degrade rapidly. This is not the case with our company.

What kind of maintenance do ÖÖD Mirror House units require, and what support do you provide to ensure their longevity?

Like all buildings, they require some love and attention. The building comes with a warranty but we’re always available on the phone if someone has an issue.

Can you explain the cost-benefit analysis for a glamping operator considering an investment in ÖÖD Mirror House units compared to traditional glamping accommodations?

A simple case study works best here. There are numerous locations where our units sit amongst an array of different building type – we’re generally always the highest grossing. The houses are so visually striking that it kind of works to make them a ‘must book’ experience. An investment in us is also a long term investment – you have an extremely well built structure designed to stand the test of time coupled with timeless design.

What future innovations or developments can we expect from ÖÖD Mirror House that might benefit glamping operators looking to stay ahead of industry trends?

We’ve just launched our Limited Edition Golden House! Its a totally different vibe, finished to 5* standard inside – we’ve collaborated with some fantastic companies in its creation.

Woodpecker Tubs are a hot tub, sauna and accommodation unit manufacturer with over 15 years experience in the industry, where production is undertaken of bespoke, handcrafted products. Created through years of research and development, Woodpecker has become one of the industry’s leading lights in the production of new and exciting designs that are improving the overall quality of the marketplace across the board.

With the production of these state-of-the-art tubs and other complementary products, there is always a need to ensure that our production methods employed are both sustainable and environmentally friendly. Our products are handcrafted and use, for example, wood in large quantities that is sustainably sourced through partnerships with saw mills and other supply chains, allowing us to ensure that we use the highest grade raw materials, regardless of their moisture content which is so vitally important when it comes to making hot tubs and other products within our portfolio.

With all of the above in mind, when it comes to this year’s Glamping Show, once again we will be bringing with us a wide range of new and existing hot tubs that always go down well at the show, as well bringing something different to the marketplace, enabling us to meet and exceed the needs of our customers.

WOODPECKER TUBS Bespoke, handcrafted products

Importantly, here we must mention that we don’t just do our stock range of tubs like the Ofuro, Elite and Prime hot tubs, but also new ‘showstoppers’ like the Onsen, which is an exciting innovation for Woodpecker, and for those who wish to offer more intimacy for their guests who want to fully immerse themselves in the overall glamping experiences.

With its state-of-the-art shaping, it means that couples can relax and share a more intimate experience when it comes to enjoying the hot tub during their break.

In addition to the shaping of the product, we are able to offer a variety of options to accompany the tub, that includes our very own ice chiller option that enables guests to use the tub for relaxation and recovery. The addition of the chiller can also be used as a way of warming the tub up too, as it is has a contrasting capability, where you can take the water from cold to warm by using the chiller/heater to create that perfect experience.

Given the above benefits and options of our products, we are also able to provide excellent after

sales service to our customers, with a 2 year product warranty. We have added support post the 2 year warranty, meaning that we go above and beyond our normal levels of service to our new and existing customers. Moreover, we are also able to help and support our customers, no matter where they are in the UK, Europe and around the globe – something which we pride ourselves on when it comes to offering a truly global product range to our customers.

We are excited to meet all of you who choose to visit The Glamping Show, in its 10th year, and allow you to meet the team, as well as viewing our products for you to enjoy and try out for size. At the show, you will find us on Stand 133, across the way from the Indoor Arena.

SUPA HEATER

Changeovers made simple

Heating a hot tub at changeover time, just got really fast, cheap and simple using SUPA Heater!

How fast? SUPA Heater can heat 1,000 litres of water from 20 to 38oC in 47 minutes, or in winter from 8 to 38oC in 79 minutes. SUPA’s two modes of

operation mean that you can fill your hot tubs direct from an outdoor hose with hot water instantly, or it can recycle water already in the tub at the same speed.

During winter, at 31 kw ‘on-demand’, there are very few limitations to how quickly a SUPA heater can take away the pain of hot tub heating from you – as long

as the water is flowing, it can get your hot tubs water up to temperature, even with an early arrival.

SUPA Heater uses propane and a typical heat up from 20 to 38oC uses just 1.62 kg in fuel.

Launched in the UK in late 2024, SUPA Heater owners have nothing but 5-star praise for how it has made their hot tub changeovers a breeze regardless of tub type: electric, stock tank or wood fuelled. Given its 5-minute set-up and the ability to leave it to do its job, owners and operators can get on with other important matters.

Being so speedy and portable also allows a single SUPA Heater to heat three hot tubs in the typical 10am to 3pm checkin time. Same day bookings with a fully heated hot tub allow owners to maximise rental revenue, but most importantly, it allows every customer to check-in to a fully heated hot tub at 3pm without owners having to face questions regarding when it will be ready – avoiding customer disappointment that they can’t get straight in, or worse, putting hard-earned 4* and 5* reviews in jeopardy.

At £695.00 including VAT, delivery and a 2-year warranty, it’s hard to question why you wouldn’t use one to make a challenging task easy, every day.

There are lots and lots of stand-out features, so it’s probably best to to find them all on our website. You can check the exact heat up times for any size of tub and the amount of propane it would use, so you can determine specific costs based on purchase price wherever you are. However, its our customers who have summed SUPA Heater’s benefits up best, and they simply state, “game-changer”.

You can purchase direct from SUPA Heater and typically you get next day delivery in the UK (when stock is available as it goes very quickly!).

It’s only available in the UK and Northern Ireland at present at £695.00, but with CE certification in place for the majority of Europe, we can supply ex. VAT plus delivery charges upon specific request. North America will see certified stock available from the start of 2025.

Traditional outdoor sauna experiences HUURU

People of the Nordic and Baltic regions have long known the physical, mental and societal benefits of sauna; and we, in the UK, are only just starting to catch on.

If one travels to Oslo, the capital of Norway, one of the top “must try” things to do when visiting Oslo, at any time of the year, is to experience outdoor sauna at one of the many fjord side floating sauna cabins – it’s big business!

Recognising the movement towards wellbeing tourism and experiential consumer spending in the UK, huuru sauna was

formed. huuru aims to create traditional outdoor sauna experiences by designing and manufacturing simple, classic outdoor sauna cabins with a traditional aesthetic that fits into most outdoor landscapes.

Our sauna cabins are off site manufactured in environmentally controlled conditions using a combination of modern and traditional materials to create a quality functioning sauna experience combined with a pleasing aesthetic. They are delivered to site ready to be craned off and placed into position.

Of great importance to us was affordability

without compromising on quality of materials or the sauna experience. We explored a number of manufacturing possibilities, but decided to achieve “best value” by working with traditional craftsman in the Baltics. This made absolute sense to us, as they offered generational sauna building experience combined with low labour and operational costs. Additionally, they are located near to the primary raw materials (timber) and many primary sauna component manufactures i.e. heaters. This supply chain and production model has allowed us to offer exceptional value and attractive ROI yields for our commercial customers.

HIGHLAND COTTAGES

Features such as large decks, outdoor showers, hot tubs and hammocks make it a perfect place to relax and reconnect with your spouse or partner.

A Unique Offering in a Crowded Market

In 2022, while exploring the breathtaking Scottish Highlands with their family, Doug and Laura Schroeder stumbled upon a gem that would ignite a new chapter in their lives.

On the shores of the legendary Loch Ness, they discovered the Loch Ness Highlands Resort—a charming community of tiny cottages designed for short term stays. Already involved in the tiny home industry as the founder of Timbercraft Tiny Homes, Mr. Schroeder was immediately inspired and brought this unique blend of charm and comfort back to the United States.

Fast forward to today, and that dream has materialised into Highland Cottages at Lake Guntersville, a luxury retreat nestled in the mountains of North Alabama. It’s a sanctuary designed to offer guests a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The Schroeders hope that their guests feel the same sense of wonder and relaxation that the couple experienced during their time in the Scottish Highlands.

Vision and Values

From the very beginning, Schroeders’ mission has been clear: to build a hospitality brand that transcends borders, offering a consistent and unforgettable experience wherever guests find a Highland Cottage. The resort in Alabama is just the start. They are diligently working to expand their brand nationwide and, eventually,

globally. They envision a future where Highland Cottages are known as a haven for relaxation, connection, and rejuvenation, no matter the location.

A Unique Offering

in a Crowded Market

In a world filled with countless options for travel accommodations, Doug and Laura wanted to create something that stood out. Highland Cottages are not about mass appeal or catering to everyone. Instead, they focus on providing a unique experience tailored specifically for couples.

Features such as large decks, outdoor showers, hot tubs and hammocks make it a perfect place to relax and reconnect with your spouse or partner. One of the standout features of Highland Cottages is the folding glass front that seamlessly blends indoor comfort with the beauty of the outdoors.

The Journey So Far and What Lies Ahead

Doug Schroeder’s journey into the tiny home industry began over a decade ago with the founding Timbercraft Tiny Homes in 2014. Timbercraft has delivered tiny homes to more than 30 states, including Hawaii, and has even shipped tiny homes to New Zealand and Europe.

Having visited over 25 countries and stayed in countless unique accommodations, the

Schroeders wanted to infuse their love for discovery into the Highland Cottage brand. Each cottage reflects a blend of the places they’ve been and the comfort they’ve come to appreciate in their travels.

Looking ahead, Doug and Laura dream of seeing Highland Cottages become a unique hospitality brand with a broad reach. They envision a day when guests can visit the website, select a state or country, and find a Highland Cottage retreat. This is a long-term vision, but they are committed to realising it. They are currently seeking partners in this ambition and would love to hear from investors and landowners who want to team up in this venture.

As you settle into your cottage at Lake Guntersville, you can rest assured that this place was built with care, passion, and a deep love for unique, meaningful experiences.

How to Create a UNIQUE HIDEAWAY

this Year

Curated glamping escapes offer a window into the wild and the luxurious. Far removed from the everyday and adorned in welcoming home comforts, they offer guests the chance to switch off, unwind, and immerse in nature in a way that’s simply unique.

With a handpicked collection of glamping retreats in the UK, at Unique Hideaways we understand the importance of creating spaces that soothe and inspire. To help you create a beautiful getaway that balances location, design, and experience, we’ve crafted a guide to this year’s top hideaway trends. From the best structures to the finest finishing touches, here’s what’s capturing hearts and minds…

Treetop Retreats

There’s something about glamping that taps into both the desire for comfort that’s woven into adulthood and the excitement of the inner child. One of the top trends that we have seen steadily increasing that perfectly satisfies both is the rise of treehouses. When created in homage to the natural environment and designed for comfort, these treetop retreats enjoy huge booking success. Think: easy access, natural materials and sky-high views that promise a whole new perspective on luxury glamping.

Cosy Cabins

When it comes to sought-after glamping experiences, the popularity of cabins is undeniable. Evoking a comforting feel for hyggefilled moments and offering more space than traditional shepherd’s huts, they are beloved by all generations. Framed by a solid structure and adaptable to a number of environments, they encourage year-round bookings that are equally as popular in balmy summertime as atmospheric winter months. Couple your design with everpopular features such as outdoor bathing for utmost success.

Floating Houseboats

For those seeking a luxury glamping escape, one of the biggest elements guests search for is privacy. Creating a private island for a blissful escape, unique hideaways such as houseboats are especially saleable, if not sailable. Consider moorings on quiet rivers or private lakes to create an experience that is simply unforgettable and adds a whole new dimension to wilderness escapes. Boats can come in all shapes and sizes and be transformed into luxurious living spaces for couples or groups.

Tiny Houses

Tiny houses with big characters are some of the most popular forms of glamping hideaways. As with all properties where appropriate, bookings

are often positively affected by welcoming dogs, and tiny houses lend themselves particularly to romantic and dog-friendly escapes. Lean into Scandi-style interiors and cleverly designed cabinetry and storage to maximise space. Curate a sense of experience with authentic details and thoughtful touches, like books, binoculars, and boardgames, to encourage indulgent immersion in nature.

Unique Abodes

Individuality is the key to the most unforgettable glamping experiences. As guests seek out new and inspiring destinations to escape the everyday, it’s important to create spaces that are both authentic and reside in harmony within their surroundings. Look for ways to create a hideaway that embraces its own style, enhances its setting, and extends into a curated outdoor space for an abode that’s truly special. Combined with outdoor features such as hot tubs, alfresco bathtubs, and saunas, you can ensure your hideaway stands out and sets the scene for dream retreats throughout the year.

If you are seeking the right marketing agency to promote your magical hideaway or are looking for some advice on where to start your journey into the world of unique accommodation, our team at Unique Hideaways would love to help bring your vision to life.

Who’s Up Next? OFFA’S PITCH GLAMPING

The award-winning Offa’s Pitch Glamping in Shropshire is on the hunt for a new proprietor with a guide price of £1,400,000!

Picture this: a charming fourbedroom cottage nestled in the heart of Shropshire, surrounded by three secluded, luxury glamping cabins that have been the backdrop for couples’ getaways. This isn’t just a business – it’s a little slice of heaven.

It all started 11 years ago, when my parents, Philip and Avril Wright, stumbled upon this hidden gem in Shropshire, and it was love at first sight. Every week, we see the same wide-eyed, grinning faces from guests as they step out of their cars and say, “Wow, what a spot!” We know. We feel it too.

Back then, Mum and Dad were looking for change of pace, and, having bought Mardu Cottage deep within the Clun Valley, they had the wild idea to jump into the burgeoning world of glamping. They’d be the first to admit they had very little idea of what they were doing. But through hard work, trial and comical error, they’ve realised a dream and had an awful lot of fun on the way.

So, what have the past ten years taught them? For the right person, running a glamping business is pure joy—a mix of zen-like tranquillity and sheer,

unadulterated excitement. They’ve had their share of both. There were the hilarious mishaps; like that one time they accidentally stocked the wrong cabin with someone else’s Tesco delivery… cue a frantic supermarket sweep to replace everything. The result of which being both sets of guests left highly satisfied, especially those with their unexpected “welcome pack”. Lesson learned: always check, double-check, and triple-check the bookings!

But they couldn’t have done it alone. Support from their friends, neighbours, and the local tradespeople have all fed into their success. They’ve also had incredible support from the folks at International Glamping Business and The Glamping Show, who’ve been their cheerleaders from day one, and, thanks to all involved, my parents have racked up some pretty impressive accolades.

Excellent Customer Service and Annual Gold Quality Awards from Visit England, Regional Finalists in the Rural England Business Awards, and voted by The Sunday Times as one of the Top 30 Winter Staycations across the entire spectrum of leisure accommodation in Britain. Not to mention featuring on BBC’s ‘Escape to the Country.’

But ultimately, I know that’s not the way they would gauge their success.

The true measure of their success? The thousands of happy guests who’ve left Offa’s Pitch, Aether’s Tilt and Wild Honey Hyde with a suitcase full of memories, whether it was a birthday, a honeymoon, or a welldeserved break. It’s been my Mum and Dad’s chance to make a lasting impact on people’s lives, one magical stay at a time. That’s the kind of reward that makes every bit of hard work and effort truly worthwhile.

But now, it’s time for them to pass the torch. With the recent birth of their first grandchild, my daughter Clio, their grandparenting duties beckon.

So, this magical place is ready for its next chapter, and all it needs is someone with the same passion, energy, and a good sense of humour to take it to new heights.

If you’re looking for a lifestyle change that comes with a built-in successful business (and some truly stunning views), look no further. Offa’s Pitch Glamping is calling… who’s up next?

A unique experience sells holidays BENTLEY ROWE MODULAR

Over the years, the glamping sector has seen some transformations regarding build quality and design innovation, however, the key aspect that remains is the challenge to provide guests with the Unique Holiday Experience they will be talking about for years to come.

Word-of-mouth promotion is the most valuable commodity and we at Bentley Rowe Modular have a passion for designing something unique, buildings that aim to ‘break the mould’ and be different from the norm.

How does this benefit you?

Firstly, let’s talk about design. If you want your guests to rebook and leave good reviews, then a building that encompasses both practical and innovative features is a must.

A touch of luxury is an expectation for many guests, so how about adding a few stunning features to get them talking? What would you include if you had control of the design? There are plenty of options and we have even included a wine fridge for a client!

Glamping today incorporates comfortable sofas, cooking facilities, a bathroom, a cosy bedroom, and space for families to play board games and enjoy their time together, all cleverly designed into a small space.

We designed our Glen Helen to have all these features as a one-bedroom glamping pod, although it can be two-bedroom by choosing a larger layout.

Another design idea, which consolidates the work involved when setting up a new pod, is to have one with the decking built-in… and it’s one job off your list! We can even make adaptions ready to add a hot tub.

Having mentioned the outdoors, what about the Exterior?

What shape do you expect a pod to be? Arched pods are traditional, but to be a bit different, we have designed a curved shape –curved at the ends, keeping the height good for headroom inside.

The exterior appearance has a wow factor, with different colours and textures, all of

which create a positive instant reaction for guests as they arrive.

Another aspect you will notice is the full glazing to the end of the building, with patio doors, and windows on either side. This not only allows easy access to the decking area but also floods the living space with natural light.

As you step inside, you would think you had entered a small apartment, rather than a glamping pod, with its modern contemporary internal finish. It’s another box ticked for your guest experience.

Longevity is key to maximising ROI

In addition to creating a unique guest experience, is the construction. At Bentley Rowe Modular we use SIPs for all our buildings, with all the associated benefits. These include eco-friendly aspects, U-values, energy savings, acoustic values, and simply a good solid structure that will provide you with many years of rental income. The more years the building can service you, the better your return on investment.

Let’s get designing!

Working together produces results, so we invite you to contact us and explore design ideas, both yours and ours. We have a passion for creating innovative designs and stunning unique buildings that will make your development stand out, now, and into the future.

CANOPY & STARS

How to elevate your guest experience and stand out from the crowd

In the competitive world of glamping, standing out from the crowd is all about one thing: the experience. As a glamping business owner, you’re not just offering a place to stay—you’re crafting unforgettable moments that your guests will cherish. The experience you provide is key to your success, and Canopy & Stars can help you design, market, and sell those experiences. Based on our expertise in monitoring travel trends and guest behaviour, we’ve compiled our top strategies.

Know Your Audience

Whether you aim to create a family-friendly retreat or a romantic escape for couples, knowing your ideal guest will help guide every aspect of your design and experience. Start by researching your competitors – this will give you insights into what similar sites offer and help you identify opportunities to differentiate yourself from others.

Nail the Basics

Before exceeding expectations, you need to meet them. Ensuring essentials like highquality bed linen and a fully-equipped kitchen is the first step. Once the basics are covered, focus on adding special touches that elevate the guest experience. Whether it’s an outdoor bath with a view or a cosy hammock under the stars, these additions can create a memorable stay.

Utilise Your Location

Your location in nature is your strongest asset. Whether nestled in a forest or by a lakeside, natural surroundings are a major draw for guests. Our glamping sites near water features have 20-30% higher nightly rates, and it’s not hard to see why. Position your spaces to highlight the best views while ensuring privacy.

Appeal in All Weathers

One way to differentiate your site is to open all year round. Outdoor features like covered decks and dining areas allow guests to enjoy nature in any weather. Consider adding outdoor seating, hammocks, or cooking facilities like pizza ovens and BBQs. These features not only extend usable space but also create a unique experience that guests will remember.

Embrace Wellness

Wellness is a booming market, with the industry valued at £224 billion in the UK alone, so incorporating wellness elements into your glamping site is a smart move. Hot tubs, outdoor baths, saunas, and showers are highly sought after, with 66% of Canopy & Stars searches including hot tubs. These features not only increase nightly rates by £25 on average but also boost bookings by 5%.

Connect Guests with Nature

Enhance your guests’ connection to nature

by creating outdoor spaces that are both beautiful and functional. Use native plants and flowers to design areas of seclusion. Add walking paths, herb planters, or kitchen gardens that guests can enjoy. Providing binoculars and nature guides can also encourage guests to explore and appreciate local wildlife.

Partner with the Experts

A great space needs a vision and hard work, but you will also need industry expertise and experience; which is where Canopy & Stars comes in. As the longest-standing marketing and booking agent in the outdoor holiday space, we have years of knowledge and data to help you turn your wildest dreams into a profitable place to stay.

The Crown & Canopy team deliver our professional consultancy services, including planning support, architectural design, and business modelling services.

After your site is built, we use our powerful platform and wider team to make your business a success, with dedicated owner support and marketing for your space.
