A WARM WELCOME
As we wrap up another year of connection, collaboration, and inspiration, I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you who has been part of the Eco Resort Network over the past 12 months. To those who joined us at our unforgettable event in Mauritius, those who have signed up for our upcoming gathering in Greece, and those who contribute to this incredible community in so many ways—thank you. Your enthusiasm and shared commitment to sustainability are what make this network so special.
This year has been one of both progress and reflection. While we continue to work towards our environmental goals, I cannot help but feel saddened by the political events and conflicts that have affected so many families around the world. These challenges remind us of the fragility of the progress we strive for and the importance of uniting to protect the future of our planet.
Yet, amidst these challenges, I find hope. We are privileged to have our health, families, fulfilling work to carry out, and the ability to travel, connect, and meet inspiring people from all corners of the globe. It is a time to recognize just how fortunate we are and to channel that gratitude into actions that make a positive impact.
I am so grateful for each of you and the energy, ideas, and positivity you bring to our community. Together, we have the power to create meaningful change, and I can’t wait to continue that journey with you in Greece next May.
Wishing you peace, love, and prosperity as we step into 2025.
Warmest regards,
Steph
GREECE IS CALLING…
UNDERTAKE A VOYAGE OF TRANSFORMATION AT ECO RESORT NETWORK 2025.
The fourth Eco Resort Network (ERN) event, set to take place across May 25–28 in Spetses, Greece, promises to be a transformative experience for professionals in ecofriendly, outdoor hospitality.
To be hosted at the Poseidonion Grand Hotel in May 2025, our boutique event is designed to foster collaboration, share innovations, and inspire progress within the eco resort and glamping sectors. Whether you’re a seasoned hotelier, an aspiring entrepreneur, or simply passionate about sustainable hospitality, here’s what you can expect when you join our gathering.
UNIQUE NETWORKING
We truly pride ourselves on creating an intimate and inclusive atmosphere for each and every one of our delegates. Since the beginning, we have capped attendance to ensure meaningful connections between attendees, which include resort owners, hoteliers, architects, sustainability consultants, investors, and other key stakeholders.
This personalised approach has made our previous events in Slovenia (2022), Montenegro (2023), and Mauritius (2024) highly praised for the warm,
collaborative environment and productive outcomes – a high number of our delegates have worked together on various projects across the globe, with many returning for their second, third, and fourth years.
LUXURIOUS SETTING
Just a short ferry trip from Athens, the beautiful island of Spetses possesses a life that has remained unchanged in generations; a port clustered with tavernas and a rich naval history – you will encounter a slower pace of life and a town where horse-drawn transport remains and cars do not exist.
Our HQ hotel will be the grand old dame of Spetses – The Poseidonion. With her majestic view over the sea front, she first opened in 1914 and retains her classic beauty, updated with modern twists and farm-to-table dining.
Or, choose from one of the many other hotels and pensions just a few steps away, ranging from simple to luxurious; tucked amid the chic boutiques and behind bougainvillea-strewn walls.
CURATED AGENDA
Our 2025 event will begin on 25th May with an afternoon ‘paint and sip’ overlooking the harbour, and an evening welcome reception with drinks and canapés to meet the other delegates in a relaxed environment. Following this will be two days of insightful discussions and presentations on the 26th and 27th, with a third day on the 28th for immersive, active networking on a mountain hiking tour.
Eco Resort Network is not just about listening to experts; it’s about transforming your vision for sustainable hospitality. At each step, you will hear and share stories from those with ideas, those who have made their ideas a reality, and those whose job it is to help make those dreams come true.
The conference will be held at the Poseidonion Grand Hotel under blue skies in one of the island’s treasures: a fully restored, open-air cinema
from the 1960s. Talks will range from the practicalities of environmentally friendly hospitality, to areas of personal development and growth.
Our speakers and workshop hosts are leading industry figures, sharing both expertise and actionable insights –including Whitney Scott (Walden), Trisha Duffy (In Ten Years’ Time), Robyn Woodhead (White Desert Antarctica), Luca Franco (Luxury Frontiers) and Brendan O’Molony (Tenthouse Structures).
Post-conference, the evenings are curated to encourage further connection between delegates; night one will be spent at traditional Greek restaurant Mourayo in the old harbour, which we will sail to on a traditional kaiki – with night two featuring an island-style celebration with flowing drinks and karaoke.
WHAT’S INCLUDED?
Tickets include the two-day conference, your meals and drinks, plus all networking receptions and excursions. Attendees can also expect curated entertainment and opportunities to explore the island.
We are offering an ‘Early Bird’ reduced rate for those who book their ticket before 1st January 2025.
SECURE YOUR PLACE
Our event is designed for those passionate about shaping the future of sustainable hospitality. Whether you’re an established industry leader or a newcomer with fresh ideas, Eco Resort Network offers a space to connect, learn, and create partnerships that drive progress. We are proud that our delegates consistently report leaving with valuable insights, genuine collaborations, and renewed inspiration for their work.
Bring your sea legs, your sketchbooks, your dancing shoes, your hiking boots, and open minds and hearts. The adventure awaits…

Aside from the planet, our time is arguably our most precious commodity, every moment matters when deciding how to use our finite vacation time or embarking on an act of creativity. We trade in people’s time, doing so with a profound understanding of its value and the potential for transformation it can offer both individuals and the planet.
Eco-resorts embody a commitment to sustainability, while offering spaces designed to restore and rejuvenate body and spirit. Carefully curated environments provide guests with an opportunity to, step away from the chaos of daily life, to reflect and embrace the natural world. By prioritising natural beauty and sustainable practices, such establishments not only offer a refuge for individuals but also contribute to greater ecological awareness.
CREATIVE THINKING
WHAT IS THE COMMON GROUND BETWEEN ECO-HOSPITALITY AND LIVING A CREATIVE LIFE?
age. We must steal back precious moments from the attention economy, that strives single-mindedly to make us care about things we don’t need or want, if we are to spend time in creative practice. When we create for just a few minutes a day, during those moments, we are no longer available for the scrolling seduction to consume mass-produced commodities. When we invest our energy in a creative community, we start to value the home-made, upcycled and artistically unique. We demonstrate through our craft that, just like the eco-resort industry, sustainable practices can coexist with luxurious and enjoyable experiences.
I argue that living with creative balance encourages individuals to do the same thing, by engaging our artistic impulses we start to see beauty in the everyday, to cultivate joy, purpose and meaning. The positive impacts of creativity on individuals are well documented, participation in any art or craft offers tangible benefits to our health - whether that’s slowing the onset of dementia, offering a means to process pain or improving our mental wellbeing through mindful creative practice.
But perhaps an equally important benefit of living a creative life is to the climate. To engage in creativity requires us to make the single most difficult decision about how we use our time that we face in today’s
We live in a society that values economic success above all, a system that wasn’t of our making. When we create space for guests to witness firsthand the positive impact of mindful choices, they understand that time spent in these places contributes to a movement of environmental stewardship. Likewise, by embracing creativity, individuals are reminded of the beauty and potential that exists within themselves and the world. It breeds innovation, inspiration and expression allowing us all to envision a better future.
Is there common ground between eco-hospitality and living a creative life? I believe there is, and it can be distilled into a single word – hope.

REVIVING HERITAGE THROUGH WELLNESS
A JOURNEY WITH ANA RAMIREZ, FOUNDER OF ANCESTRAL HANDMADE HOTELS
IN THE HEART OF SOUTH AMERICA, ANA RAMIREZ AND HER HUSBAND, JUAN DREAMED OF CREATING A HOSPITALITY MODEL THAT WOULD TRANSCEND THE ORDINARY. THEY ENVISIONED A PLACE WHERE LUXURY WAS NOT JUST ABOUT INDULGENCE BUT ABOUT FOSTERING MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS— WITH ONESELF, THE COMMUNITY, AND THE NATURAL WORLD.
This vision gave birth to Ancestral Handmade Hotels, a groundbreaking initiative that redefines the concept of eco-luxury through a harmonious blend of cultural heritage, sustainability, and holistic wellness.
“Our inspiration came from a shared passion for preserving heritage and indigenous traditions that have often been forgotten,” Ramirez explains. “We saw an opportunity to create something extraordinary—hospitality that not only offers unique experiences but also fosters a genuine connection to the ancestral legacy of each location. At the same time, we wanted to uplift local economies and prioritize biodiversity and community development.”
Through the Ancestral Foundation, the company’s vision extends far beyond the confines of its properties. By championing regenerative tourism, sustainable agriculture, and community-centered initiatives, Ancestral Handmade Hotels is setting a new benchmark for eco-tourism that balances the needs of the land, its people, and its visitors.
ANCESTRAL WISDOM MEETS
MODERN WELLNESS
Central to the identity of Ancestral Handmade Hotels is the concept of “ancestral,” which permeates every aspect of the guest experience. From the design of the spaces to the wellness practices offered, the brand seeks to honor ancient wisdom while presenting it in a way that resonates with today’s travelers.
“The concept of ancestral is at the core of everything we do,” says Ramirez. “It shapes the wellness experiences we offer by drawing inspiration from indigenous healing practices, rituals, and cultural traditions that have been passed down through generations. These practices honor the connection between body, mind, spirit, and nature—a harmony often overlooked in today’s fastpaced world.”
Guests are invited to immerse themselves in experiences that range from sacred rituals and sound bath drum meditations to herbal medicine workshops and somatic movement therapies. “Our goal is to revive and preserve these traditions while presenting them in ways that feel authentic and transformative,” she adds. “It’s not just
about relaxation—it’s about creating a profound connection to the heritage of the places our guests visit.”
DEFINING HOLISTIC WELLNESS
For Ramirez, wellness is an ever-evolving concept that cannot be confined to a single definition. At Ancestral Handmade Hotels, it is seen as a dynamic and multi-dimensional state that goes beyond individual well-being to encompass the health of communities and the environment.
“In the context of eco resorts, wellness is about achieving a balance that nurtures human well-being while enhancing the natural and cultural ecosystems of the destination,” she explains. “This multidimensional approach allows wellness to flourish in its truest and most authentic form.”
At Ancestral, this philosophy is embodied in spaces designed with sacred geometry, integrating ancestral healing techniques with modern innovations such as state-of-the-art spa technologies. “This fusion ensures that guests reconnect with timeless wisdom while enjoying the comforts of modern convenience,” Ramirez says. “It’s about creating a perfect harmony between the past and the present.”
COMMUNITY AS THE CORE
The connection with local communities is not just a priority for Ancestral Handmade Hotels—it is a fundamental part of the brand’s identity. From the outset, Ramirez and her team have sought to cocreate with local artisans, researchers, and indigenous communities, ensuring that their work uplifts and preserves the cultural heritage of each location.
“Our mission is deeply rooted in regenerative tourism,” she says. “This means partnering with local communities to foster social entrepreneurship initiatives, support traditional practices, and ensure that wellness extends beyond individual experiences to benefit the broader social and economic fabric of the destinations we serve.”
Examples of these collaborations abound. In Colombia, guests can experience clay mud baths, coffee massages, and essential oil workshops, all crafted in partnership with local wellness practitioners. Other offerings include cacao ceremonies, equine therapy, and archaeological hiking trails, each designed to connect guests with the land and its people in meaningful ways.
“These collaborations are not just services—they’re stories,” Ramirez emphasizes. “They enrich our guests’ experiences while ensuring that local traditions and economies thrive.”
THE FUTURE OF WELLNESS TOURISM
The wellness tourism sector is booming, now valued at $830 billion and projected to grow annually by over 10%. Eco resorts, with their unique ability to integrate wellness with biodiversity preservation, are poised to lead this growth. Ramirez sees this as both an opportunity and a responsibility.
“Investing in healthy and biodiverse ecosystems is not just about well-being—it’s a proactive strategy for resilience against climate challenges,” she says. “As
global temperatures rise, the appeal of outdoor living and winter mountain destinations is growing. Concepts like ‘Glow birding,’ the Gen Z evolution of snow birding, are emerging trends that reflect this shift.”
Looking ahead, Ramirez believes the future of wellness will hinge on the ability to balance tradition with technology. “Preserving culture while integrating efficient AI-driven operational systems and innovative wellness trends like floating and wild saunas will define the industry by 2025,” she predicts. “These experiences will be youthful, entertaining, and socially driven.”
EXCITING NEW VENTURES
Among the most exciting developments at Ancestral Handmade Hotels is a new project in Cusco, Peru. Located on breathtaking sacred land, the project will begin with a blessing ceremony led by the indigenous Qeros Incas, marking the start of what promises to be a transformative journey.
“This sacred land holds incredible potential,” Ramirez says. “It’s a privilege to work with conscious and inspiring partners to bring this vision to life.”
In addition to the Cusco project, Ancestral Handmade Hotels is exploring other extraordinary biodiverse sites, with details to be unveiled in the near future.
“We’re excited about the possibilities and how these ventures will shape the evolution of our brand and partnerships,” she adds.
A Community of Passionate Earth Lovers
As she looks forward to the next Eco Resort Network meeting in Greece, Ramirez is eager to reconnect with like-minded individuals who share her passion for sustainability and wellness.
“This community of passionate earth lovers is so inspiring,” she says. “I’m looking forward to sharing, learning, and collaborating with them in such a beautiful setting. And this time, no work—you’ll find me on the dance floor!”
Through her dedication to ancestral wisdom, community engagement, and holistic well-being, Ana Ramirez and Ancestral Handmade Hotels are setting a new standard for eco resorts. Their approach proves that true luxury lies not in extravagance but in connection—to the land, to heritage, and to one another.
Ana Ramirez will be speaking at next year’s event in Greece.

These lodges not only redefine the safari experience with unparalleled luxury and immersive natural experiences but also reinforce ENVI’s commitment to sustainability. This dedication was recognized when ENVI SISINI Serengeti earned membership in the Beyond Green portfolio, joining a global elite of ecoconscious accommodations.
ENVI SISINI SERENGETI: A HAVEN OF SUSTAINABLE LUXURY

Boasting 11 luxury tents and tented villas, the lodge provides a front-row seat to the iconic wildlife of the Serengeti, from majestic lions and leopards to the great wildebeest migration.

Guests receive refillable water bottles, and locally sourced, eco-friendly bathroom products are supplied by an all-women cooperative in Africa.
ENVI SISINI Serengeti is also deeply committed to community empowerment, with 96% of its staff from Tanzania. Local farmers supply fresh produce, supported by training and workshops provided by the lodge. Guests are invited to participate in treeplanting activities as part of the property’s reforestation efforts, conducted in accordance with national park guidelines.
Membership in the Beyond Green portfolio affirms ENVI SISINI Serengeti’s leadership in sustainable hospitality. To qualify, the lodge underwent a rigorous audit aligned with 50+ global sustainable tourism criteria, including environmentally-friendly practices, cultural and natural heritage protection, and tangible community benefits.
“Achieving the Beyond Green certification for ENVI SISINI Serengeti is a milestone that underscores our sustainability pillars,” said Paul Jordaan, Executive Director at ENVI Lodges. “It reflects our responsibility toward conservation and community engagement while delivering unparalleled guest experiences.”
ENVI SISINI MARA: A FRONT-ROW SEAT TO THE GREAT MIGRATION
Furthering its commitment to exceptional safari experiences, ENVI is introducing ENVI Sisini Mara, strategically located in the northern Mara region. The camp offers 10 luxury tents, including a two-bedroom suite with a private plunge pool, perfect for families or groups seeking privacy and comfort.
The camp’s location near the famed river crossing of the Great Migration provides guests with unrivaled opportunities to witness one of the world’s most aweinspiring wildlife spectacles. The camp also boasts a spa, a yoga deck, a communal pool, and a library tent, emphasizing holistic wellness alongside adventure. ENVI Sisini Mara embodies sustainability by using solar power, sourcing locally made furnishings, and prioritizing produce from nearby farmers. These efforts ensure that the camp operates with minimal environmental impact while contributing to the local economy.
Co-founder Noelle Homsy highlighted the lodge’s significance: “Our goal is to create a seamless circuit of lodges across Tanzania, offering safari enthusiasts the opportunity to explore this remarkable country while staying at ENVI-managed properties.”
A COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE TOURISM

ENVI Lodges’ approach—rooted in its seven sustainability pillars—ensures each lodge goes beyond luxury to provide guests with meaningful, transformative experiences. From supporting local artisans and farmers to protecting wildlife and embracing renewable energy, ENVI’s lodges serve as models for the future of ecotourism.

A CONVERSATION WITH LUCA FRANCO, CEO OF LUXURY FRONTIERS
2024 HAS BEEN A YEAR OF TRANSFORMATION AND ACHIEVEMENT FOR LUXURY FRONTIERS, A LEADING DESIGN FIRM IN IMMERSIVE, ECO-FRIENDLY HOSPITALITY.
At the helm is CEO and Founder Luca Franco, a visionary entrepreneur whose commitment to sustainability and experiential travel continues to shape the future of the industry. In this exclusive interview for SHARE Magazine, Franco reflects on the past year, shares insights into the company’s design philosophy, and unveils exciting plans for the future.
2024: A YEAR OF GROWTH AND RECOGNITION
Luxury Frontiers entered 2024 with momentum, following significant investments in 2023 that paved the way for an ambitious phase of growth. The results have been extraordinary. The company received prestigious accolades, including two AHEAD Awards, an HD Award, and a shortlisting for the Dezeen Awards. Among the highlights was the inclusion of Naviva, a Four Seasons Resort, on Architectural Digest’s list of ‘The 9 Most Beautiful Bamboo Buildings in the World’.
Reflecting on these milestones, Franco says: “Seeing Naviva recognized for its bamboo architecture was particularly meaningful. Bamboo is becoming integral to sustainable construction, and its use will only expand in the years to come. It’s an honour to contribute to the industry’s evolution.”
Franco’s personal journey mirrors that of his company. Luxury Frontiers’ holistic approach has taken significant steps forward, notably through the expansion of its vertically integrated ecosystem of services. This vision, long held by Franco, has been instrumental in enhancing the firm’s ability to deliver comprehensive solutions to its clients and partners in the experiential hospitality market.
STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP DRIVING INNOVATION
Key to Luxury Frontiers’ success is its leadership team, which grew stronger in 2024. Aalia Udawala was promoted to Director of Strategic Hospitality Advisory, a move that underscores the importance of this division in shaping the company’s future. Franco explains: “Strategic Hospitality Advisory is central to our approach, enabling us to provide a fully integrated service. Aalia’s leadership ensures we can deliver even greater value to our clients by aligning our design and advisory processes.”
The appointment of Guy McGregor as Managing Director of Luxury Frontiers Studio marked another milestone. With over 20 years of experience, including senior roles at Singita, McGregor brings unparalleled expertise to the firm. Franco elaborates: “Guy’s background aligns perfectly with our commitment to immersive travel. He is now overseeing our design and project services while strengthening our procurement and project development teams. His work will be pivotal as we continue to push boundaries in luxury hospitality.”
A PROCESS ROOTED IN IMMERSION AND SUSTAINABILITY
Luxury Frontiers’ design philosophy is deeply rooted in a commitment to creating immersive, sustainable experiences. From the savannahs of Africa to the deserts of Utah and the beaches of Mexico, each project is tailored to its unique environment. Franco outlines the firm’s process: “Our designs begin with a profound understanding of the site and its context. We focus on creating experiences that resonate with the culture, history, and environment of each location.”
The process is guided by five core themes:
1. Connection to Place: Designs honour local culture and history, incorporating traditional materials and architecture.
2. Engaging All Senses: Lighting, textures, aromas, and soundscapes are thoughtfully curated to enhance the guest experience.
3. Thematic Storytelling: Every element contributes to an overarching narrative that fosters a sense of adventure and connection to nature.
4. Programmatic Design: Guest programs leverage the site’s unique potential, seamlessly integrating market needs with the guest experience.
5. Sustainable & Biophilic Design: Sustainability is at the heart of every project, creating environments that restore balance and promote mindfulness.
“These themes ensure our designs are both transformative and practical, offering guests a deep connection to the locations they visit,” says Franco.

EXCITING PROJECTS SHAPING 2024 AND BEYOND
Luxury Frontiers’ commitment to excellence is evident in its global portfolio. This year, the firm partnered with Abercrombie & Kent to design two lodge rebuilds and a new build in Africa. Construction is already underway on Baines’ Lodge in Botswana’s Okavango Delta and Gorilla Forest Lodge in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Both are set to open in 2025.
Franco describes the approach: “These lodges exemplify contextual sensitivity and sustainability. Our goal is to integrate them seamlessly into their environments while creating immersive experiences that celebrate their unique locations.”
The firm’s involvement extends to the Bahamas, where it played a key role in master planning and securing Rosewood Hotels for Yntegra Group’s $200 million luxury resort on East Sampson Cay. Set to open in 2028, the project reflects Luxury Frontiers’ holistic approach, encompassing architecture, interior design, procurement, and project development.
Other noteworthy projects include the company’s first ventures in India and Australia. In India, Luxury Frontiers is designing a mixeduse development featuring luxury lodging and branded residences on a coffee plantation. In Australia, the firm is working on an eco-lodge on an island off the East Coast. Franco shares: “These projects challenge us to innovate while staying true to our core principles of sustainability and immersion.”
Longstanding collaborations remain a cornerstone of Luxury Frontiers’ success. Partnerships with Wilderness Safaris in Africa and Nayara Resorts in Costa Rica continue to yield extraordinary results, with each project pushing the boundaries of immersive luxury hospitality.
THE FUTURE OF EXPERIENTIAL TRAVEL
As the hospitality industry evolves, Franco envisions a shift from sustainability to regenerative travel. He explains: “The next phase is about more than minimizing impact—it’s about restoring environments and creating experiences that transform guests and communities. This includes rewilding natural areas and fostering meaningful connections between people and nature.”
This vision aligns with a broader cultural shift toward valuing experiences over material possessions. Franco adds: “Today’s travelers seek purpose and transformation. Our goal is to create spaces that inspire mindfulness, balance, and a deep connection with the world.”
Luxury Frontiers is uniquely positioned to lead this transformation, combining innovative design with a commitment to environmental and social responsibility. As Franco looks to 2025 and beyond, he remains focused on expanding the company’s vertically integrated ecosystem and unlocking new opportunities in the experiential hospitality market.
A VISIONARY LEADER
Luca Franco’s journey as a leader is as inspiring as the projects he oversees. Born in Italy, Franco’s global perspective was shaped by a life spent living in 10 countries and traveling to 100 more. Fluent in four languages, he holds a Bachelor of Science in Building Engineering from the University of Pavia.
Franco’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Luxury Frontiers in 2011, with a mission to redefine luxury hospitality through eco-friendly, immersive lodging experiences. His ability to anticipate trends has positioned the firm as a leader in the industry, working with renowned brands like Aman, Four Seasons, and Ritz-Carlton.
An avid adventurer, Franco has completed over 25 marathons worldwide, including extreme races in the Arctic Circle and Chile. Despite his global travels, he calls Chicago home, where he lives with his wife and four children.
CONCLUSION
Luxury Frontiers’ journey is a testament to the power of vision, innovation, and collaboration. Under Franco’s leadership, the firm continues to set new standards for experiential hospitality, blending sustainability with transformative guest experiences. As the industry moves toward regenerative travel, Luxury Frontiers is poised to lead the way, creating spaces that restore balance and inspire meaningful connections.
Franco’s closing words capture the essence of this mission: “Travel is evolving to be not just luxurious, but purposeful. At Luxury Frontiers, we’re excited to help shape this future, creating experiences that leave a lasting impact on guests and the world around them.”

ADAPT OR FALL BEHIND
EVOLUTIONARY LESSONS FOR ECO-TOURISM
IN LEWIS CARROLL’S THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS, THE RED QUEEN TELLS ALICE, “IT TAKES ALL THE RUNNING YOU CAN DO, TO KEEP IN THE SAME PLACE.”
This concept, known in evolutionary biology as the Red Queen Effect, describes the perpetual race for species to adapt just to maintain their place in the ecosystem. It’s a fascinating idea—and one with clear relevance for businesses, especially those operating in dynamic niches like eco resorts and glamping.
Through our research at Walden, we’ve observed that this principle not only applies to the individual businesses in a sector, but also to the ecosystems in which they operate. The glamping industry, and even more so the eco resort sector, exist as part of a larger outdoor economy—an evershifting landscape that demands constant adaptability. Consumer preferences evolve, market conditions shift, and external pressures—like regulatory changes or environmental concerns—add layers of complexity. In this dynamic environment, standing still is not an option. For the business of the outdoors to succeed, we must adapt, innovate, and, like the Red Queen, keep running.
Consider one key finding from our recent research on U.S. commercial accommodation buying behaviors—The criteria driving purchasing decisions are shifting. Where choices were once dominated by cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency, we’re now seeing a decisive swing toward consumer preferences and marketability. In simpler terms, the mindset of the guest is beginning to outweigh the practicality of the pocketbook.
This trend signals a pivotal evolution in the eco resort industry. Providers are becoming increasingly attuned to the emotional and experiential aspects of their offerings, recognizing that how a guest feels about their stay, matters as much as the logistics that made it possible. The emphasis is no longer solely on occupancy rates or maintenance costs but on what attracts and retains guests in the first place.
The Red Queen Effect reminds us that the consumer is not static. Their preferences, practices, and behaviors evolve daily, shaped by societal trends and personal experiences. What we built yesterday, no matter how innovative or successful, may no longer align with today’s expectations or tomorrow’s aspirations.
Eco-tourism is more than a niche—it’s an expanding ethos that aligns profit with preservation. According to a recent Walden study, 55% of U.S. leisure travelers practice daily to weekly recycling habits, with a similar percentage regularly attempting to reduce energy and water consumption. These eco-conscious behaviors directly influence travel preferences, with a significant proportion indicating their sustainable practices increase when traveling, shaped by the accommodations and destinations they choose. These numbers underscore the growing demand for sustainable travel options and the opportunity for providers to meet this mindset.
The Red Queen Effect serves as a call to action: to move with purpose, adapt intelligently, and run with intention. If you were to ask any business owner, “Do you want to stay in the same place?” the answer would almost certainly be no. Yet the reality is that few businesses truly know how to absorb and process change effectively. It’s not enough to react to consumer demands; staying ahead requires a deliberate effort to anticipate how these demands might evolve.
For the eco resort industry, success hinges on more than refining offerings or repositioning brands—it’s about creating a deeper alignment between the buyer’s evolving perceptions, behaviors, and aspirations and the business’s understanding of those shifts. This connection must extend beyond the guest experience to the entire ecosystem, from suppliers to providers.
As the outdoor industry evolves, the Red Queen’s insight is clear: adaptation is essential—not just to remain relevant but to grow. Companies must ensure that every decision—from supply chain strategies to the guest experience—creates a foundation for a sustainable and competitive future. In this dynamic ecosystem, standing-still means falling behind—and progress will require purposeful action.
Whitney will be joining us as a speaker at Eco Resort Network 2025.
CRAFTING EMOTIONAL CONNECTIONS FOR SUSTAINABLE HOSPITALITY DESIGN
IN SUSTAINABLE HOSPITALITY, CREATING EXPERIENCES THAT RESONATE DEEPLY WITH GUESTS CAN TRANSFORM A VENUE INTO MORE THAN JUST A PLACE TO STAY—IT BECOMES A CATALYST FOR MINDFULNESS, WELLNESS, AND MEANINGFUL ENGAGEMENT.
At Hidden Worlds Entertainment, we’ve pioneered a concept called Impactainment, merging conservation, art, and storytelling to create immersive experiences that inspire action while fostering emotional connections. This approach has profound implications for wellness-focused hospitality, where emotional and sensory engagement can amplify the effectiveness of offerings.
THE SCIENCE OF EMOTIONAL STORYTELLING
Daniel Hettwer, Founder Hidden Worlds Entertainment
Unlike traditional educational experiences that rely on information dissemination, Impactainment uses emotional storytelling to drive behavior change. Studies consistently demonstrate that emotions are far more effective than facts at influencing decisions and sparking long-term engagement. In practice, this means pairing scientific insights with personal narratives that bring abstract concepts to life.
For example, in our project Our Ocean, Our Future, we make the vast and often impersonal topic of ocean conservation relatable by telling human-centered stories. One such narrative highlights cancer survivors who benefit from medications derived from sea sponges,
reminding audiences of the ocean’s profound connection to human health. This emotional bridge translates complex environmental issues into relatable experiences, inspiring action and advocacy.
DESIGNING
FOR WELLNESS THROUGH SENSORY IMMERSION
Sustainable hospitality projects can draw inspiration from these techniques to create wellness offerings that connect deeply with guests. By integrating sensory-rich environments—immersive soundscapes, dynamic lighting, and evocative storytelling—venues can foster mindfulness and emotional well-being. Imagine a wellness retreat where guests engage with guided meditations that include narratives of natural conservation successes or a spa that integrates ocean-positive dining into its offerings.
At Hidden Worlds, we craft such experiences through precise sensory design. Using neuroscience-based tools, we measure the impact of our productions on guests’ awareness and behavior. For instance: n Heart rate algorithms provide insights into emotional responses.
n Information recall tests gauge how much guests retain about the cause.
n Behavioral assessments, such as donation rates or direct actions like participating in cleanups, evaluate long-term engagement.
This data-driven approach ensures that our initiatives are not only impactful but also sustainable.
OCEAN-POSITIVE DINING AND WELLNESS
Dining experiences offer another pathway to embed wellness and sustainability into hospitality design. At Hidden Worlds, our ocean-positive dining approach promotes environmental health while delighting the senses. By serving invasive species like lionfish, carbon-sequestering seaweed, and bivalves that improve water quality, we create meals that nourish both the body and the planet. Each dish and cocktail also carries a narrative, transforming mealtime into an educational journey.
Hospitality projects can adopt similar models by emphasizing food’s connection to the environment, creating menus that are not just sustainable but actively regenerative. Imagine integrating dining with storytelling, where guests learn how their meal choices contribute to biodiversity and climate resilience.
BRIDGING THE ENGAGEMENT GAP
The concept of the “engagement gap” was introduced to me through my work with Solomon Group, a creative production company specializing in immersive experiences. The engagement gap refers to the indifference many organizations face when trying to connect with audiences—a lack of emotional resonance that can weaken even the strongest initiatives.
This insight has informed how we craft impactful experiences at Hidden Worlds. The opposite of engagement isn’t dislike—it’s indifference. By addressing this gap, we strive to turn passive audiences into active participants, building a sense of connection and purpose. This principle is key to designing hospitality experiences that leave a lasting impression.
TANGIBLE RESULTS, LASTING IMPACT
The outcomes of Hidden Worlds’ efforts are a testament to the power of emotional engagement:
n Over 1,000 invasive lionfish consumed, helping restore marine ecosystems.
n $20,000 raised for conservation partners, including Beneath the Waves and local NGOs.
n 2000 pounds of trash collected by guests, fostering direct environmental stewardship.
These successes highlight how immersive and emotionally resonant experiences can drive measurable impact, making them ideal for wellness resorts and eco-hotels looking to elevate their sustainability initiatives.
BUILDING FANDOM FOR SUSTAINABILITY
The principles of fandom that Solomon Group leverages in sports and entertainment also resonate deeply in environmental and wellness contexts. Creating a sense of belonging, identity, and passion transforms one-time guests into long-term advocates for both your venue and the broader sustainability mission.
By integrating emotional storytelling, sensory immersion, and actionable outcomes, sustainable hospitality projects can craft transformative experiences that leave guests not only relaxed but inspired. As designers and operators, embracing the principles of Impactainment and bridging the engagement gap can elevate wellness offerings into powerful tools for connection, education, and positive change.
Through creativity, purpose, and impact-driven design, we can ensure that every guest interaction contributes to a healthier, more sustainable world.
Daniel will be speaking at our Greek event in 2025.
THE POWER OF ENERGY AND SPACE
IN THE REALM OF ECO RESORT DEVELOPMENT, VALENTINA CEREDA, FOUNDER OF ENERGY AND SPACE, IS PIONEERING AN APPROACH THAT GOES BEYOND CONVENTIONAL SUSTAINABILITY. HER MISSION IS TO CREATE SPACES THAT ACTIVELY REGENERATE BOTH THE ENVIRONMENT AND THE COMMUNITIES WITHIN THEM.
Grounded in a unique philosophy that blends ancient wisdom with cutting-edge science, Cereda’s work is a testament to the power of thoughtful, place-sensitive design.
For Cereda, the guiding philosophy of Energy and Space is simple yet profound: “Our core philosophy is to improve the wellbeing of people and the Earth by enhancing the health of our physical environments, focusing on regenerative practices.” This mission drives every project they undertake, placing a particular emphasis on cultivating spaces that nurture the land and the communities they serve.
At Energy and Space, “energy” and “space” are not mere concepts but are actively integrated into their projects. Cereda explains, “We incorporate four pillars in architecture and design that contribute to the health of physical environments, combining ancient wisdom—like land energy sciences, sacred geometry, and classical feng shui— with contemporary sciences, including building biology and the mitigation of environmental toxins and electromagnetic fields.” Through this holistic approach, Energy and Space creates environments where energy and space harmonize to promote sustainable hospitality.
LATEST PROJECTS
with natural, organic materials found on the land, which allows us not only to regenerate the environment but also to support local communities involved in the design and construction process,” says Cereda. “Local culture is always the main driver of the design.” By using materials sourced directly from the site, Energy and Space reinforces a sense of place that is both sustainable and deeply connected to the land.
Energy and Space’s projects are rooted in principles that prioritize the health and harmony of their surroundings. By integrating elements of ancient land wisdom with modern scientific knowledge, the firm creates spaces that not only meet eco-friendly standards but also resonate with the spiritual energy of the land.
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AND ARCHITECTURE
Nature is the ultimate compass for Energy and Space, guiding every design decision. “We only design
One recent project, a confidential eco-resort for Six Senses, exemplifies the innovative approaches that define Energy and Space’s work. “We are using the soil from the site to create natural plaster for the interior walls and ceilings,” Cereda shares. “This breathable material is made by local communities, which not only reduces waste but also connects the community to the project in a meaningful way.” Another source of pride for Cereda is a land energy audit she conducted with indigenous tribes, balancing and cleansing the energy of the land through traditional rituals and ceremonies.
These projects demonstrate how Energy and Space pushes the boundaries of sustainable design to incorporate the cultural and spiritual heritage of each location. Each project reflects Cereda’s commitment to creating high-energy zones that honor the land and those who inhabit it.
ENERGY MANAGEMENT AND CONSERVATION
For Energy and Space, energy management is essential to reducing a resort’s carbon footprint. One area they focus on is water management, filtering wastewater for reuse and saving water through innovative design practices. Plastic reduction also plays a key role in their approach, as they strictly avoid synthetic products, ensuring that the carbon footprint is minimized without compromising the project’s health and sustainability.
“Depending on the project location, we adapt our strategies,” Cereda explains. “In some regions, local regulations limit the use of solar power, so we prioritize alternative conservation methods, such
as water and plastic management, and using local natural materials.”
CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Navigating regional challenges is part of the journey for Energy and Space. For example, in the UAE, solar energy use is limited by local regulations. “We can only use solar power to cover up to 5% of the total power,” Cereda notes. In response, they emphasize water management and natural materials as alternate paths to sustainability. In remote areas, sourcing sustainable materials can also be a challenge. Cereda’s team often uses locally sourced, organic materials like palm leaves to create shading systems or eco-friendly construction materials, adapting traditional methods to modern eco-resort needs.
COLLABORATIONS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
The collaboration with local communities is not just an aspect of Energy and Space’s projects; it is
foundational to their work. “Every aspect of our designs is inspired by local community and culture,” Cereda says, “so they can take part in both the construction and management of the resort once it’s open.” In many projects, community members contribute to the construction, using traditional techniques to create fabrics and other design elements, embedding their culture into the resort’s identity.
By involving local artisans and materials, Energy and Space ensures that the resorts are not just environmentally sustainable but also culturally resonant, benefiting both the project and the surrounding community.
FUTURE GOALS AND VISION
Looking to the future, Cereda envisions eco resort design moving towards even more organic and regenerative practices that honor the spirit of the land. Energy and Space’s upcoming project in Africa encapsulates this vision. “This wellness resort, all built with rammed earth and bamboo, will be constructed by local artisans,” she shares. Developed with sacred geometry principles and guided by land energy
practices, this resort will be a beacon of high-energy, sustainable development.
ADVICE FOR ECO RESORT OPERATORS
For those looking to incorporate sustainable practices into their properties, Cereda advises going beyond simple sustainability and focusing on the energetic qualities of the land itself. “The advice is to integrate health into every layer of design, from the landscape to architecture and interiors,” she says. While sustainable materials may be recycled, they often don’t return to the Earth in a healthy way. Cereda emphasizes the need for natural materials that enrich the environment rather than merely reduce waste. Through her groundbreaking work, Valentina Cereda is reshaping eco resort design, setting a standard for spaces that nurture both people and the planet. Energy and Space stands as a model of how architecture and design can be tools for healing, regeneration, and connection to the land.
Valentina will be joining us in Greece at Eco Resort Network 2025 as a speaker and delegate.
