Welcome to GlBUSINESSmping
Summer is almost here and the high season is just around the corner – we hope you’re all booked up and ready for a promising few months ahead!
At the end of May, we will be heading off to Montenegro for the Eco Resort Network event – co-organised by our publisher, Steph Curtis-Raleigh – for three days of sharing best practice with top players in the sustainable hospitality industry; we will review the event in our next issue.
In this issue, we called upon the expertise of Crown & Canopy and Purple Pitch Communications to discuss the ins and outs of planning and consultancy, and the importance of branding and marketing your site.
Kerry Roy, our good friend and award-winning “glamptrepreneur”, weighs up the dream versus the reality of running your own glampsite and shares the four pieces of wisdom she has gained from owning two successful businesses in the UK and Italy.
We also interviewed Jules Hudson, who many of you will know from the BBC’s rural property show Escape to the Country, to find out more about his self-built glamping venture, Mole Hill Hut, and what advice he would give to future operators.
Finally, we rounded up some of the leading manufacturers of cabins, shepherd’s huts and pods, so you can make an informed decision when planning or upgrading your accommodation offering.
We’ll see you in our next issue, with a preview of what’s to come at The Glamping Show UK, and a focus on canvas structures and geodesic domes.
Editor, International Glamping BusinessBritish dome manufacturer TruDomes has launched its first permanent showdome, which is now open for viewing at the company’s head office in Nuneaton.
Available to view by appointment, the furnished dome showcases the company’s market-leading manufacturing quality and superior standard features alongside some of the many optional extras which are available to create a bespoke glamping experience.
Its geodesic design includes a lightweight yet robust frame made from aircraftgrade aluminium which provides rust-free durability and easy transportation.
TruDomes director Kelda Bassett said, “Opening our first permanent showdome is a significant step for TruDomes. We have created showdomes at various glamping trade shows and they have always received exceptionally positive feedback, particularly with regard to our investment in material quality.”
“In a competitive market, our domes stand out for their longevity and ability to handle challenging conditions with all-weather performance. That difference is made possible by manufacturing all our domes at our factory in Nuneaton – unlike many competitors, which import inferior products
and materials, we design everything in-house and apply rigorous quality control which is reflected in the showdome.”
Featuring a lacquered finish and triplelayered insulation, the showdome’s hardwearing 650 g/m² PVC shell is designed for extreme weather with resistance to temperatures as low as -40ºC and as high as 70ºC.
TruDomes’ signature panoramic window section maximises the view out and includes blackout-lined curtains, one of a wide range of upgrades available to enhance luxury and comfort.
TruDomes sales manager Louise Stone said, “TruDomes’ ability to customise is another difference which is being illustrated within our new showdome. It displays various optional extras, including the increasingly popular wood burning stove which many UK glamping sites are utilising to facilitate year-round bookings and increase their nightly yield.”
FURTHER SPACE ANNOUNCES £1.5 MILLION INVESTMENT IN SCOTLAND
Northern Ireland-based sustainable glamping company Further Space is making a significant investment in the UK this year. The first step in this expansion is the opening of a breathtaking new site on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, set to launch this spring.
The Port Nan Gael location will be Further Space’s eleventh site and its third in Scotland, with existing sites in Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Scottish locations including Dumfries and Galloway and the Scottish Highlands. The investment made by Further Space in Scotland has already exceeded £500,000, and with plans to open sites in Skye, Oban, Darvel and Fordie, investment figures will surpass £1.5 million by the end of 2023.
Further Space has an overall 10-year plan in place that would see the innovative start-up welcome 2.6m guests per year across 650 locations within the UK, Europe and North America.
The new site is owned by a local family who are passionate about bringing people back to the island and rejuvenating the area. Husband and wife, Chermaine and Calum Laurie operate the glamping site.
Chermaine said, “There is no doubt that we are extremely passionate and proud of where we come from. Several family generations have operated this land and we are so excited to welcome visitors to experience the beauty of the island.”
Further Space co-founder David Maxwell is pleased to announce the company’s further expansion in Scotland. He said, “We are committed to investing in Scotland and are passionate about increasing tourism in lesser-known areas to boost local communities that surround the pods. We have loved working with Chermaine and Calum thus far and look forward to a long-lasting partnership.”
NORWEGIAN GLAMPING SITE WINS LUXLIFE 2023 AWARD
Brokkestøylen, a nature resort in the Norwegian mountains, has been awarded with the Luxlife 2023 Hotel & Restaurant Award for southern Norway.
The resort offers luxury eco pods and a glass restaurant serving local and regenerative food, and is located at an altitude of 600 meters in Setesdal – a UNESCO heritage site – surrounded by forest, rivers and mountains.
Erik Berglihn, co-owner, said, “We are very thankful that our guests recommended us for the prize, and quite happy to win it!”
Brokkestøylen offers five isolated eco domes, with a luxury king size bed with Norwegian down duvets. The season starts when the mountain road opens for summe from May 21, and opens partly in June and full time from July onwards. The road makes a crossing over the reindeer area in the southern mountains, down to the fjords – the typical route is Oslo, Telemark, Setesdal, Lysefjord, Stavanger.
NOMADIC RESORTS UNVEIL THEIR FIRST NOMADIC ESCAPE AT ANBALABA
Louis Thompson, CEO of Nomadic Resorts and Co-Founder of Nomadic Escapes, will be attending Eco Resort Network 2023 to unveil their first Nomadic Escape.

FUEL OUTDOOR ADVENTURES WITH LOGS THAT SUPPORT TOWNSHIP EMPLOYMENT
Put a sustainable spark into your outdoor adventures this summer with a little help from the South African sun. Whether it’s camping, glamping or caravanning, wood specialist Logs Direct has just the product you need in the shape of its new Proper Wood Hardwood Logs, containing sustainably sourced Eucalyptus.
Naturally dried in the South African sun, these Ready to Burn logs have a moisture content of under 20% and produce minimal smoke – ensuring your leisure time in the great outdoors is enjoyable and free of unpleasant sparks and odours.
These new mixed species hardwood logs are a hassle-free fuel option all year round and are even more satisfying given their sustainable credentials.
The logs are a green-economy product, sourced via a great project based outside Cape Town. The project is all about
helping to restore bio-diversity and build resilience at a local level and it all boils down to how eucalyptus trees are handled.
Eucalyptus oil may have benefits, but eucalyptus tree consume a vast amount of water and that eats up far too much of the natural water reserve. To safeguard local water supplies, the local government has set up an initiative to fell these trees and that then creates a lot of wood.
Proper Wood – with whom Logs Direct is working – is tackling the wood overload around South African townships, by supplying township residents with the tools that can turn wood into employment and tools opportunities. These communities are now chopping the wood into log-sized products and packing these in recyclable packaging for on-sale.
By buying these logs, you can support employment and better futures within
South Africa’s townships. Proper Wood Hardwood Logs are available to buy in weather resistant bags with carry handle, priced from £5.50 per bag. Bulk discounts available. Contact orders@logsdirect.co.uk or 01524 812476, or visit logsdirect.co.uk.
RUNNING A GLAMPING BUSINESS
The Dream VS The Reality
If this sounds familiar to you, it could be that you are in danger of falling out of love with the very things that drew you into running a glamping site in the first place. It may be that with a few adjustments you can reignite the passion and start living the dream again; at least some of the time!
I have run glamping sites in both the UK and in Italy and, for those of you who have followed my journey in A New Life in the Sun on TV, you will know that there has been no shortage of stressful moments. Thankfully the experience has taught me a few things about managing the downs, so that I can make the most of the ups!
Take it with a pinch of salt
I have found there are two sides to running a business: the lighter side, and the darker side. It’s often easier for many of us to shout about the highs that give us that feel-good factor (especially on social media) but few of us really ever share the darker side – when we feel overwhelmed and frustrated. So, don’t get into the mindset of thinking it’s just you and everyone else is managing better and never be too proud to ask for help.
Don’t leave work/life in the balance
The dream is usually to quit the day job in order to spend more quality time with those we love, in a place we love. The reality is that
My work is dreamy and desirable – especially to my guests. They enjoy their holidays in the Italian sunshine and imagine I have the perfect life. While I present a calm and serene exterior, inside my nerves are stretched and my brain is racing through my “to do” list.
you may not be constrained to set working hours or an office cubicle – but you are actually always ‘on duty’.
This reality can soon overshadow the dream if you, as the owner, are not able to run the business effectively, efficiently and without you always being “in it”. Hospitality – especially accommodation – is a potentially 24/7 business.
Your guests may need assistance at any hour of any day and the situation could be even worse if you live on site. Make sure you get cover from time to time to babysit your business, so that you can occasionally go out and enjoy social time yourself, or you may resent the missed nights out or feel bad about letting friends down if you can’t join them! Consider the option of living off site if possible – this is something I have now done, to get some physical as well as mental distance for some of the time.
Find a fixer!
Don’t be fooled that once you’ve found your idyllic plot of land, installed some wonderful accommodation, and set up the booking systems – Hey presto! The work is done. In actuality, the maintenance is constant, with relatively high costs compared to other industries. Even when you think you’re on top of it all, your glamping accommodation, land, and dealing with nature’s natural forces will ensure you are never stood twiddling your thumbs for too long. It’s well worth employing a part-time fixer, gardener, and handy person all in one – there will be days when things break, and trying to check in guests while fixing a broken heater can be challenging.
Don’t do everything!
We’ve all been there – spinning plates and juggling balls and trying to do everything ourselves. Just because we can get away with it some of the time, doesn’t mean we should. Trying to be everything to everyone at once will start to take its toll on your wellbeing and passions, while slowly holding back what the business could become. If you work with your family, it can even put pressure on your most important relationships.
We can all be guilty of thinking that we can do these jobs better than anyone else, or that by the time we show others how to do them, we could have already done them ourselves. It may also be that we feel we cannot afford to get more help.
However, can you afford not to get help? It may be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make, going from one employee to a full team – giving you the headspace required to grow the business and time to work ON it, not always IN it.

Just for You JUST FOR TWO
Interview With Jules Hudson
Jules Hudson is a versatile writer and broadcaster, and the leading face of the BBC’s rural property show Escape to the Country. A keen countryman and craftsman, Jules spends his spare time renovating his home in Herefordshire assisted by his partner Tania, their son Jack, and two labradors. International Glamping Business’ editor Annie Hilton spoke with Jules to find out about the process of creating his own glamping site, and what advice he would give to other operators.
Tell us about Mole Hill Hut – what’s it like?
Mole Hill Hut is a large en-suite shepherd’s hut, built for us by Riverside Shepherd’s Huts in Worcestershire. It stands in the corner of a three acre sheep field, with 270 degree views of the Wye Valley and the Black Mountains in Herefordshire. Alongside it sits The Trough, a bespoke break-out cabin carefully sited to take in the stunning sunsets we have here.
Mole Hill Hut was conceived as a couple’s retreat – a getaway from it all, including the job and the kids. The strapline “Just for Two, Just for You” was born from that idea. Being our first venture into the glamping industry, we were rightly cautious of over-building, and over-investing before we’d gained the confidence to get it working as we hoped it would. We’d get it right first, then think about expanding if the market allowed. It also meant we could focus our investment on a high-end offering that would leave no detail overlooked – at least that’s the hope!
Most will know you from presenting BBC’s Escape to the Country – what was the journey from helping others, to now creating your own slice of rural life?
Many viewers of Escape to the Country will have seen me and my colleagues helping countless couples over the years to find rural properties that offer them the chance to supplement their income, or indeed create a primary business by either establishing a holiday let or glamping business. When I joined the show in 2007, yurts were all the rage, but gradually many more tantalising options have entered the market. I’ve always loved the idea of a shepherd’s hut – both for looks and all-year practicality. When we eventually found ourselves the right piece of land adjacent to our home, the idea of creating a small bespoke offering was inevitable; it’s a journey that now enhances the advice I give to buyers keen to get involved in the market.
You described your site as a “labour of love” – could you elaborate on this?
I do love a practical project! I’ve always enjoyed renovating and building, and so the chance to design and create Mole Hill Hut, here at home, was an opportunity I really relished. We took some time assessing the shepherd’s hut market, but eventually decided upon Riverside Shepherd’s Huts based upon design, proximity to us, and price. The result has been amazing, but commissioning the hut build was the easy bit. What followed was almost a year of tree felling, fencing, trenching for new power and water, and then building The Trough. This element I felt was really crucial in creating a destination that would genuinely work all-year round, whatever the weather. Having useable and memorable additional living space is, I hope, one of the aspects that distinguishes us to our guests, many of whom are no strangers to the shepherd’s hut market.
What were the highs and lows of creating your own site?
I’m not a great fan of paperwork and bureaucracy, so the planning process was really frustrating – as I’m sure it is to many others – but we got through it. We also had to have two new power connections to both our home and to the hut site, all of which took up time and money. However, the reward of actually spending time at home project managing, designing and building most of it was just great. I also think that being hands-on allows you to constantly adjust what you’re creating as you focus ever more on what you’re making, and how your guests are going to use and experience it. It was all planned, but it had space to evolve.
Which project has been your favourite to work on?
Building The Trough was the most creative and rewarding element of the site. I was keen to try and create something that felt homely, but which also felt different. I’ve come to understand that for sites like ours, they’ve got to offer something that is architecturally memorable to really create a ‘destination’ in its own right. We were keen to make good use of upcycled and repurposed elements, from doors and windows, to the marmalade pan sink and drawers made from old floorboards. Both Mole Hill Hut and The Trough provide two very different settings; the former a boutique ensuite bed space, with some cooking and living room facets, and the latter unashamedly hand-built and quirky. Together, they share the wear and tear that is inevitable in a busy holiday let.
In hindsight, is there anything you would have done differently?
The cost of materials that lockdown accelerated made the build far more expensive that it would have been pre-COVID. Looking back, I might have tried to buy more in bulk so that it was ready to go.
What was the planning permission process like?
Planning took us about 7 months, which, compared to many, wasn’t too long. For
us, its main focus was change of use for the small plot upon which the hut sits, whilst the result is still effectively a temporary structure. Overall, it was relatively straight forward –once we’d got past the intricacies of the online planning portal!
What have you got planned for the future?
Right now we are entering our second summer, and are looking forward to increasing the tempo of our guest stays. When we started last July we were in no rush to be overwhelmed, as we tried to work out how best to present and run it. We are also now firmly focused on marketing it ourselves, having found that the use of a national agent did not allow the flexibility to sell the region as a whole and Mole Hill Hut in particular.
What is your long-term goal for Mole Hill Hut?
We’ve tried to create a place that we hope is a chance for our guests to really get away from it all in the stunning Wye Valley. Whilst many who come here travel to see the sights, such as Hay-on-Wye, the Black Mountains or canoeing on the Wye itself, many now also just come to enjoy the views, the peace and Mole Hill Hut as it is. That is perhaps the best compliment: that guests share in what we’ve created, and that hopefully we’ve built something that
stays long in the memory. But we are always learning, always tweaking, and that’s the fun of it.
And finally, for soon-to-be site owners, what is the one piece of advice you can give?
Don’t rush, and try to understand your market. Once we’d decided upon a shepherd’s hut, we spent about 4 years on and off looking into different makers – trying to match what was on offer with the market we were aiming for, whilst balancing that against what we could afford.
We were greatly helped by the team at Riverside, and once we’d got the planning and ordered the hut itself, it was all-go for about a year, working weekends, evenings and spare days to get the whole thing finished. Perhaps the most exciting part was allowing the build to, at least in part, inform how it would eventually turn out. I could have sketched it in minute detail before we started, but the small things – the details that our guests remember and that I hope will bring them back – all came along as we went. It has been one of the most creative things I’ve ever done, and I wouldn’t have missed any of it. So if you are thinking about it, go for it! The reward of seeing your visitors and guests enjoying all your efforts is the best feeling in the world.

DO YOU REALLY NEED KINDLING TO LIGHT THE PERFECT FIRE?
As the camping season starts to gather pace, consider what is required for those campfires and wood fired pizza ovens. Make sure you are able to provide your customers with everything for the perfect fire – Kiln dried logs, kindling and Flamers natural firelighters, making sure of course the logs are ‘Ready to Burn’ approved. But do you really need all of the above?

TESTING YOUR WATER
In the modern pool or spa, water quality and safety are essential. This means that having a good testing protocol and an accurate testing system is equally essential. If you are not testing the levels of key parameters regularly using a recognised professional system, can you be certain that the pool or spa is safe and comfortable? Likewise, how can you treat the water correctly if you do not know what’s in the water?
At Lovibond®, we have many testing options available to ensure your pool or spa water is safe and comfortable. Each system offers the reliability and accuracy expected from a Lovibond® system and is backed by over 60 years of experience in water testing.
The MD110 Handheld Photometer with Bluetooth measures all the key pool water parameters and also enables readings to be stored and transferred directly to a tablet or PC. Tests covered include free and total chlorine up to 10mg/l, pH, total alkalinity and calcium hardness. As with all Lovibond® photometers, it uses recognised test
chemistries using tablet reagents, is easy to use and is supplied with everything needed to start testing immediately.
For the professional spa operator, we have a kit available that will allow you to meet the requirements of Health & Safety Executive Guideline HSG282. HSG282 was introduced in January 2017 and its main aim was to reduce the risk of Legionella and covers all spa and hot tubs being used in a commercial setting. As you would expect, the guideline includes recommendations on water testing both on testing protocol and parameters that should be measured. It suggests that the disinfectant (chlorine or bromine), pH and Total Dissolved Solids are tested regularly. Our MD100 HSG Kit includes everything needed to test these parameters, contained in one handy carrying case.
Having the correct kit is only part of the story. Testing must also be carried out correctly and operators must know how to use the kits. To help with this we will offer free pool water testing training with any photometer. This
training will not only include correct use of the system but will also cover all aspects of good water testing, from taking the sample through to recording the readings. Training would be on-site or via Zoom - depending on location - but will be free of charge.
Finally, is the well-being of your staff important? Did you know that many testing tablets contain hazardous ingredients especially boric acid which can harm users? If there was a safer alternative available shouldn’t you be using these? Well, there is a safer option. All Lovibond® tablets are boric acid-free, making them safer to use. Are the tablets you are currently using boric acid-free? Is it time to make the change?
Just look for the green chemistry logo on the box.
At Lovibond®, we have everything needed for today’s pool professional to ensure your testing is accurate, reliable and carried out correctly. Contact us for full details or to discuss your testing requirements in more detail at support@lovibond.uk.
HIPCAMP
Booking and advertising platform Hipcamp launched their new mobile app across iOS and Android this month.
Showcasing thousands of glamping structures and outdoor stays across the UK, as well as in France, Australia, and North America, the app extends the brand’s reach within the glamping market.
The handy app, which has already featured as Apple’s “App of the Day” and ranks amongst the top apps for “glamping” searches, includes all key components of the muchloved Hipcamp website, but with a new, efficient, mobile-dedicated design. The first app release also includes additional app-only features, such as reward patches and off-line trip details.
“Camping, by its very nature, is an on-thego experience,” said Hipcamp CEO Alyssa Ravasio. “We’ve been working hard to get these apps out into the world, and we’re so excited to make it easier for people to find and book their perfect outdoor stay, whilst at the same time inspiring a new love of nature.”
For glamping businesses, the app offers an exciting opportunity to reach more potential guests. While camping, and caravanning in particular, has been well served by mobile apps in recent years, the Hipcamp app is much needed in the glamping space and has been well received by businesses.
“We know that visitors return and engage with Hipcamp more often when they have a dedicated app installed”, Hipcamp UK Country Manager, Jonathan Knight, told International Glamping Business. “For Hosts, that makes it an ideal platform to showcase your site to a higher-intent audience and reach people who glamp and travel often.”
The Hipcamp app is free to download and was first released for iPhone users in late April before being rolled out across Android devices.

In a highly competitive market, glamping businesses are increasingly looking for features which will set their site apart from their rivals. It could be an extra touch of luxury, a distinctive interior design scheme or a quirky talking point – any detail that makes a glamping experience stand out from the norm and has glampers coming back for more.
TruDomes understood that advantage from the moment they started out making domes in 2017. They believe that imagination, creative vision and attention to detail are essential for any truly exceptional glampsite. An expert design team backed by manufacturing excellence has enabled the company to tailor their geodesic domes to each individual customer, working in close collaboration to realise their concept.

TruDomes incorporate technology that optimises temperature and supports natural ventilation and efficient air circulation, preventing the build-up of moisture and condensation. Domes can be installed with air con units or solar extraction fans for off-grid campsites. When the option to increase the temperature is needed, they can fit log burners and retain warmth with the use of triplelayered insulation.
A TruDomes design concept considers every aspect of glamping life. Mindful that many campers like to take their pets on holiday, the company developed a new feature for four-legged guests in the form of portholes for pets. It’s one of many innovations which have impressed glamping businesses and their customers.
TruDomes are renowned for a host of extras that rival off-the-shelf products can’t offer, but they also pay attention to the fundamentals: all-season performance, strength and durability, even in the most extreme conditions. Dome frames are manufactured from aircraft-grade aluminium which is rust-
A dome from TruDomes will provide many years of virtually maintenance-free use. In contrast, many competitors supply massproduced domes made from budget materials which are sourced to improve profit margins rather than the end-user experience. Those domes are often cheaper to buy but far more costly in the long term as rapid deterioration leads to a need for replacement parts.
Market-leading longevity is a USP that gives TruDomes’ products a clear edge but, with an ability to create domes which are truly one of a kind, the company’s biggest USP is uniqueness itself.

The Essential Glamping Business Manual in 2022 into the subject of outdoor living and hot tubs, it was suggested that people in the United Kingdom prefer to ‘embrace’ the outdoor lifestyle, whether that is within a glamping setting, or alternatively transferred to the home marketplace.
In addition to the findings from the market trends, it was also noted that customers were more likely to buy products that would fit in with the surroundings, adding a ‘cohesive’ flow to the design and shaping of the area, something that made the choices of materials for hot tubs and other outdoor living products, much more of a ‘value added proposition’ when deciding which products to choose.

Brand new from Glampsan in 2023 is our CampPlus range of en-suite bathroom pods. For camping and touring site applications in the main, these units allow you to offer an upgrade to guests: it’s camping and glamping with style as guests have their own private en-suite! As a site owner, you will be able to command higher pitch fees, achieve higher occupancy levels and extend the rental season: resulting in increased revenue whilst also realising superior customer satisfaction levels and positive feedback.
Our most popular unit is a high quality “plug-and-play pod”, containing two separate en-suite rooms in a back-to-back, semi-detached layout. Guests share the building but that’s all they share as each side has its separate hot water and electrical supply, as well as being insulated and soundproofed from each other. Installed between two pitches, the DUO will provide each caravan or tent pitch with its own private bathroom facility.
No more trips to the communal toilet or shower block with the proverbial loo roll under your arm! It’ll be right next door. Each side has its own toilet, shower, sink,

Why
is Key to Successful Marketing PUBLIC RELATIONS
It doesn’t matter whether you are a farmer with one holiday let, or a park owner with multiple accommodation units – you need to have both public relations and marketing activity to help you stand out. Glamping in particular has become a crowded market place with many land owners diversifying and offering an experience on their land. To make your offering stand out, you need to invest in promoting the experience on multiple channels – and that doesn’t mean just paying for some adverts.
The main difference between PR and marketing is that PR focuses on building and maintaining a positive reputation for your brand or business, while marketing focuses on directly promoting and selling; think social media posts compared to social media adverts.
Obviously a business needs to make money, so marketing activity is essential, but you won’t get bookings if your online reputation and presence is poor – no matter how much marketing you do.
Before a potential customer makes a booking,
they will look at a number of things to help them decide who to spend their hard earned cash with. Your prices will play an important part, but so will how they feel about your brand. They will look at online reviews (and how you responded to them), check out your social media to get a real feel for your destination – they may also Google you to see if any articles come up, good or bad. So, what can you do to improve your PR?
Organic Social Media Management
This is all about posting regular, engaging content on your social media to bring your experience to life. It’s a great way to build a loyal, dedicated audience who can help market your offering with likes, shares and comments – for free!
Review Stays/Familiarisation Visits
You may have seen other sites being reviewed in newspapers or magazines. Working with media and influencers to review your accommodation can result in a huge increase in traffic to your website and social channels, improving your search engine optimisation and increasing bookings.
Media Relations
You will undoubtedly have a story to tell from time to time. Whether it’s the launch of a new venture, new units, enhancements such as hot tubs or ensuite facilities, or a special event –they will all make a great news story for local newspapers and trade media, securing you free coverage and promotion. Getting articles published which link back to your website will also improve your Google rankings!
Awards
There may be awards you could enter, but you don’t have time to research the right ones and do the applications. But, winning an award can give you amazing positive coverage and undoubtedly increase your bookings.
Any business wanting to encourage people to book with them rather than a competitor would benefit from PR. It’s all about creating your story, building trust and advocacy in your target market, developing your brand personality and showcasing the experience you offer.

Key Elements to Consider when Developing a Site DESIGN AND PLANNING
We work with landowners and farmers from the very beginning ideas stage of a project right through to architectural design, planning permission, build, and delivery through our comprehensive suite of services.
Design and gaining planning permission are key parts of the process in developing a successful glamping site. These steps lay the foundations for your venture and require you to consider all elements, ensuring a well thought out design which is compliant with local planning policy and aligned with your vision. In these early stages, it’s important to establish what kind of product will work and perform well on your site and, crucially, what kind of development would be acceptable to the local authority under planning. As the market grows, a bespoke and unique approach to design is invaluable and will allow you to produce a one-off development specific to your site and ideals, which will also ensure a future-proof investment with a highperformance value.
Bespoke year-round products such as treehouses and cabins tend to be the highest
performers in the industry, yet these don’t always have to be permanent structures. These structures offer the most freedom and creativity when it comes to design, which is also beneficial with regards to planning as materiality, scale, and appearance are key considerations throughout this process. Your design and choice of materials will define how well your accommodation sits within the natural landscape and inform its sustainability credentials.
As planning policy develops and climate crisis documents are declared, sustainability is an increasingly important factor. We often integrate sustainable features such as EV charging points, bike storage, and electric bike provision, as well as assistance to access sites via the closest public transport links. Connections to public footpaths and local services such as shops, pubs and restaurants are a major benefit to your business from a planning and guest experience perspective.
Impact on the environment has always been a consideration for us and since the early
days, nature and environmental enhancement schemes have been a core element of the projects and applications we develop. In our view this is a win-win, for both the environment and developers, as outdoor accommodation schemes heavily benefit from a nature rich environment. In turn, significant enhancement schemes allow us to mitigate small scale, low impact development.
In more recent years we have been able to access significant funding for these enhancement schemes as well as designing them into planning applications as a form of mitigation through initiatives such as Woodland Creation Grants (WCGs) and schemes such as Farming in Protected Landscapes (FIPL). In addition, new funding schemes that support rural tourism developments such as investments in visitor accommodation and farm diversification for event venues are soon to launch in 2023. We will explore these initiatives in more detail in the next edition of the magazine.

For most glamping, camping and caravanning sites, the ideal location might be a little off the beaten track, with stunning countryside views or perhaps by the sea. Typically, these sites have no way of connecting to the main sewage network and therefore require a sewage treatment plant to manage and treat their wastewater.
100 Years of Waste & Water Management PREMIER TECH
As one of the leading manufactures of sustainable wastewater treatment solutions in the UK, Premier Tech can help these sites meet the building regulations approval for all off-mains sewage treatment systems, that blend into the landscape.
Our products are not only engineered to minimise your running costs (zero energy), they are sustainable, ensuring we protect your property and the environment around it. With cost-effective solutions for individual glamping pods, to camping and glamping developments of up to 600 people, our product portfolio will meet your needs.
Our turnkey approach allows you to take a step back and let us do the work, from advising on the best system for you needs, to installing and setting up an optional servicing diary, to ensure your system performs perfectly.
Premier Tech has been established for 100 years and design & manufacture waste water treatment and rainwater harvesting systems in the north of England. Our teams are located logistically around the UK, so you will have a local point of contact wherever you are based.

our highly efficient and reliable Rewatec Solido Smart sequencing batch reactor, our cost effective Rewatec ASP, or something more bespoke, together, we can implement solutions to protect UK homes and our surrounding environment for generations to come.
Our Ecoflo has been protecting your properties and our environment with sustainable local solutions for 25 years. With over 150,000 installations already across the globe, the Ecoflo biofilter is a proven system for enhancing wastewater effluent quality for a variety of applications,

The Ecoflo biofilter can also be specified as part of a new treatment system to fully protect and preserve UK watercourses, streams and nearby rivers.

WILD HUTS
What inspired you to start a business for the glamping industry? How long have you been trading?
We officially launched in 2022, born from our own desire for large and unique shepherd’s huts for our own glamping site in the Cotswolds. The huts on the market we saw were quite small and we wanted to create additional features, like outdoor showers. Given our experience, we now offer full consultancy services too. From the setup and build of the site, to identifying the proposition and marketing, as well as insight into booking platforms and even how to create an environmentally friendly, carbonneutral stay for guests.
What are the main advantages of using shepherd huts for hospitality, in your opinion?
If you have a beautiful location and want to offer a luxurious but connected experience, the design of our huts allows you to feel immersed in nature with all the comforts of a boutique hotel.
What makes them stand out, when compared to other manufacturers?
The unique combination of skilled, artisan craftsmanship with state-of-the-art engineering design means that our huts have an extremely low lifetime carbon footprint. The impact on the environment is considered
in every aspect of the build, from sustainablysourced cedar from the Welsh mountains and stunning upcycled Victorian floorboards, to the use of the famous Cotswold sheep’s wool for unparalleled insulation.
What is the most unusual or unique shepherd hut you have created?
All of our huts are unique in their own right, but our Poldark hut is one of our favourites because it really showcases our approach. The whole hut was actually inspired by a lampshade found in a charity shop. From the detail of the design to the colours, the creation of Poldark shows the beauty of upcycling and restoring materials to reveal a newfound glory.
Can you create fully off-grid huts?
At the other end of the scale, how luxurious can they be?
Yes! Our design team will work with you to create your dream hut. All our clients are unique and the range of uses extends from significantly boosting the farm or home income stream by providing unique stays, to a tiny off-grid home or office space.
How much maintenance do your huts require? Do you recommend any follow-up services?
Our huts are customised, built to last for decades and require minimal maintenance. Made with natural materials, they age gracefully and seamlessly blend into your landscape.
What is the average wait time from ordering, to arriving on-site?
Our hut builds can take as little as five weeks to complete, depending on the complexity.
Can your products be assembled on-site or do they require transportation?
Depending on the build, they are usually built at our site in the Cotswolds and then transported to their final home when complete. We can also provide a landscaping service with a design that is in keeping with your existing space. Building on-site can be more practical in some cases, or we combine partial pre-fabrication with on-site construction.
What geographical markets do you cover?
All over the UK!
How long is the lifespan of your products? Do you offer any warranties?
We construct our huts with the same approach as you would to a house: they are designed to last, taking more time and using higher specifications and better quality materials. This results in less maintenance to worry about. It means our huts will never be the cheapest option, but we believe this pays itself back through fewer repairs and a higherquality end product.
ELLIPSE LEISURE BUILDINGS
ellipseleisurebuildings.co.uk
Announcing the launch of Ellipse Leisure Buildings Limited’s new demonstration Tees Plus model for 2023! It will be available to view by appointment at Ellipse Leisure Building’s beautiful base in the heart of Teesdale, near the iconic market town of Barnard Castle. It will also be showcased at The Royal Highland Agricultural Society Show, The Great Yorkshire Show, and The Royal Welsh Show.
The Tees Plus new demonstration unit offers a unique mix of both the more traditional elements associated with Shepherd’s Huts and the contemporary glamping style of much more spacious buildings. All Ellipse’s Leisure Buildings feature an elliptical curve formed from glulam beams with the curved roof going from front to back rather than side to side. The beauty of this is that it gives a much higher and airier space with much more of a wow factor. Combined with a large, covered veranda featuring a designer steel balustrade along with up and downlighters, this provides a sheltered area for scope to extend seating and alfresco dining in all weathers. The flooring comprises minimal maintenance, recycled composite materials. Most guests say that the covered veranda enhances the feeling of being on holiday.
All Tees models are on hand-made steel carriage-style wheels in conjunction with a towbar fitted with turntable, allowing for easy
manoeuvring with a four-wheel drive vehicle if needed.
The new demonstration unit features scorched live-edge larch exterior cladding, extra built-in storage, a live-edge kitchen worktop combined with a Shaker-style kitchen – along with an integrated under-counter fridge, microwave, and LPG hob.
A hand-made glulam, timber bedframe adds to the charm of the interior in conjunction with built-in over-head and side storage units, trimmed with accents of live-edge larch.
As it is a raised, off-the-ground structure on wheels, coupled with underfloor heating with an additional radiator, a heated towel area, double-glazed windows with trickle vents and French doors coupled with excellent insulation, the unit is eminently suitable for all year-round usage as it is warm, airy and roomy. It is not prone to any cold spots coming from contact with the ground. An LPG combi-boiler provides hot water for the shower, heated towel-rail and sink in the ensuite shower-room
The Tees Plus model will comfortably sleep two adults and two children when a sofa-bed is provided in the sitting room area.
All structures are custom-built to order, allowing our customers to adapt to any purpose and all specifications. A wide range of colours, materials and features allow a truly diverse range of looks and finishes.
Other variations of The Tees Plus models and larger lodges can be seen by visiting ellipseleisurebuildings.co.uk. For further information, please contact sales@ ellipseleisurebuildings.co.uk or 01833 630851

The Raven yurt is built to the same standards as the Eagle, but value engineered for affordability – in sizes ranging 16’ to 30’ diameter. Our teepees are made with brass grommet pinning holes, staking loops and reinforced corners on all smoke flaps.
of 20 size combinations with window and door customizations. This month, Eco Resort Network will be reconvening in Montenegro for its second year of sharing best practice between operators, hoteliers, investors, consultants, start-ups and suppliers within the eco resort, glamping and sustainable hospitality sector. ecoresort.network
The luxury networking event, co-organised by International Glamping Business’ publisher
Steph Curtis-Raleigh and Maja Dimnik, founder of World of Glamping, is to take place at the 5-star Lazure Hotel & Marina in the beautiful Montenegro on May 24, 25 & 26. Two days of panel discussions, supplier presentations and talks from renowned members of the hospitality industry will be followed by a third day for delegates to explore the region with wine-tasting and dinner, and a private tour of Oblun Eco Resort – an upcoming venture by Goran Brnovic, currently under development.
The first ever Eco Resort Network event was held in Slovenia last May, and many delegates pursued new business opportunities directly as a result of the connections they made. These include approaches from investors, distribution agreements, strategic partnerships and sales of goods and services. This does not include the many new friendships, referrals and recommendations which resulted from spending quality time among like-minded people.
The number of delegates that are returning for 2023 goes to show there is an appetite for a boutique, sustainable hospitality event that combines learning with exploring, and that the combination of curating a highly focused group of high-end delegates, pleasant surroundings and the chance to visit an eco resort as part of the event has proven to be extremely popular.
