Almudena Cano Piñeiro

FOUNDING

Almudena Cano Piñeiro is an architect dedicated to urban design, research and teaching. She has recently been awarded an LDOC Scholarship at the Royal College of Art, funded through the AHRC Centre for Doctoral Training, in order to develop a practice-led Design Research focused on urban regeneration processes and socio-political design practices.

In 2012 she graduated from the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid, where she first developed her understanding of architecture as a tool for social empowerment. Her MA project “Urban Strategies to Regenerate Indian Public Space” received national and international awards including the COAM “PFC Innovation Prize 2012”, ISARCH 2012 and Graduates Architecture Award 2012, the Hunter Douglas-Archiprix 2013 and the XII Bienal Española de Arquitectura y Urbanismo. Her work has been published by specialized journals, architecture magazines and discussion forums such us Sociedad y Utopía (October 2014), Architectural Review (October, 2012), AV proyectos. Her projects have been exhibited at the 13th Biennale di Venezia, XII BIEAU, ARCH Moscow NEXT2013 and India-Under-Construction Forum among others.

In her commitment with research and teaching, Almudena has collaborated with research teams such as LAA: Laboratoire d’Architecture et Anthropologie (ENSAParis-La Villete) and Cultura del Hábitat (ETSAM-UPM), and she has given seminars and lectures in various universities including ETSAM, UEM, UPSAM, RCA and UEL. As a curator of architecture exhibitions, talks, competitions and events, Almudena has co-curated the exhibition “Herramientas” in Madrid CentroCentro Cibeles and has been the Project Coordinator of Archiprix International Madrid 2015 and Archiprix Spain in collaboration with ETSAM-UPM and Archiprix Foundation. As a practising architect, since 2009 she has worked for international firms such as Bres+Mariolle et Associés (20082009), Izaskun Chinchilla Architects (2009-2010), Beta.0 Architecture+Landscape (2010-2011) and Arenas+Basabe+Palacios (2011-2014).

Cave Il secondo rappresenta un modello di abitare flessibile e adattabile ai vari luoghi, basato sulla leggerezza del trasporto dei materiali da costruzioni, indipendenti dal luogo di reperimento, e sulla versatilità di lavorazione e di montaggio del legno come materia prima e tecnologia costruttiva. Implica quindi un concetto di abitare di tipo nomade, predisposto alla colonizzazione di nuove terre ma anche fortemente individualizzato; espandibile e carico di ambizioni di crescita per il futuro, ma anche intrinsecamente effimero e fragile.

Il primo modello è quello che trova rappresentazione nelle forme archetipiche della caverna, o delle città litiche che traggono origine della roccia. Esso si basa sul principio di radicamento stabile ad un sito primigenio, nel quale la comunità riconosce il proprio “genius loci” ancestrale, tramandato più o meno consapevolmente di generazione in generazione. Si esprime nelle forme di una città compatta e monolitica che cresce su se stessa rispettando la sua matrice originaria.

The first model is that depicted in the archetypal forms of the cave, or lytic cities that have their origin in the rock. It is based on the principle of radical establishment to a primitive site, in which the community recognizes its ancestral “genius loci”, more or less consciously handed down from generation to generation.

It is expressed in the form of a compact and monolithic city that grows on itself preserving its original pattern.

The second is a flexible living model and adaptable to various places, based on the lightness of the transport of construction materials, independent from the site of retrieval. It also allows versatility of processing and assembly of wood as a raw material and constructive technology. Therefore it implies a concept of living in a nomadic way, designed for colonization of new lands but also strongly individualized; expandable and load of ambitions for the future, but also ephemeral and fragile inside.

Il terzo paradigma di città popolare è quello che si basa sulla figura dell’innesto, attraverso il quale una nuova architettura e una nuova comunità frutto di trasformazioni socio culturali nel corso del tempo, attuano una dissociazione ambivalente rispetto al passato. Perso ormai qualunque legame filologico e semantico con il proprio passato, non riconoscendone più o rigettandone il valore e il significato, decidono comunque di impiantarsi sul cadavere della città morta come organismo parassita. Oppure possono accogliere la sfida del confronto con il proprio passato, realizzando forme innovative e interessanti di ibridazione.

The third popular city paradigm is one that is based on the figure of the graft, through which a new architecture and a new community resulted from the socio-cultural transformations over time, implement an ambivalent dissociation towards the past and its riuns. Now, lost any philological and semantic link with its past, no more recognizing the value and significance, they decide to establish themselves over the body of the dead city as a parasitie organism. On the othe side they can take the challenge of confrontation with the relicts of the past, creating innovative and interesting forms of hybridization.

the world is POP! Humans colonized the entire planet. The man’s architecture is an architecture of the city: popular.

Esiste nel mondo un’antica capanna che è stata abitata solo poche volte nel corso della sua storia centenaria da intrepidi esploratori. Nonostante si tratti di un edificio in legno di un centinaio di metri quadrati in totale, la Nuova Zelanda ha speso negli ultimi anni circa quattro milioni di dollari per il suo restauro e la sua conservazione: il costo del recupero di un grande monumento storico. Questa singolare costruzione sorge sull’isola di Ross, in Antartide e fu usata dal celebre inglese Scott, nel suo (fallito) tentativo di arrivare per primo al polo Sud geografico del nostro pianeta nel 1911.

Oggi come allora quello che stupisce i pochi visitatori che riescono a visitarla, tramite un permesso speciale, è la facilità con la quale si entra in una condizione domestica e familiare: la cucina, le stoviglie, la stufa e il suo pennacchio di fumo, tutto concorre a identificare questa capanna, lontana 17.000

Km dalla nativa Londra, come “casa”.

Perchè è importante la capanna?

La prima forma di abitazione costruita che l’uomo abbia concepito abbandonando la grotta, essa è ancora oggi usata, come un archetipo sopravvissuto ai secoli nella nostra immaginazione, in maniera quasi inconscia. Viene usata come abitazione dalle popolazioni in cui non è ancora giunta la costruzione moderna di tipo industriale, come dai coloni ed esploratori, e in generale quando non è possibile far arrivare mezzi meccanizzati in luoghi impervi: e ancora per tutti è “casa”.

Questo numero di PDA ha l’ambizione di lanciare una scommessa: quale sarà l’urbanità del futuro?

Come evidenziato dalla mappa del mondo che potete vedere nelle prime pagine, i luoghi indagati si collocano tutti ai margini delle agglomerazioni metropolitane più consistenti: in un punto strategico

di contatto tra la città “consolidata” di stampo occidentale e moderno, e i nuovi insediamenti spesso provvisori ed estemporanei delle comunità che decidono di aderire alla dimensione metropolitana, con tutto ciò che questa comporta. Questo margine è un luogo di frontiera nel quale è possibile già ravvisare segnali di proficue contaminazioni tra i diversi modelli dell’abitare popolare e i primi echi del moderno.

L’urbanizzazione è un fenomeno incredibile che sta cambiando il mondo: nel 2050 la popolazione mondiale sarà intorno ai nove miliardi di persone, per circa il 70% concentrate nelle città, con tutti i rischi ambientali e le scommesse economiche che questo comporta.

Cosa accade ai margini di quelle che ormai sono le grandi conurbazioni continentali? Come sta avvenendo e come dovrebbe es-

Personalizzazione, atteggiamenti, aspirazioni rispetto ai luoghi dell’abitare sono molteplici e rispecchiano non solo il rapporto con le risorse locali ma anche il background ereditato dalla tradizione inconscia.

Gli attuali modelli di regolamentazione edilizia, che fanno la loro parte, risultano spesso essere solo un palliativo in un mondo in cui le regole del mercato sono più importanti, in cui la quantità viene ottenuta a scapito della qualità. Il motto: ottenere di più, oggi.

PDA #8 cerca di ripercorrere la parabola dell’abitazione raggruppando tradizioni, costumi, modi di costruire: da tutte le terre emerse del globo.

There is an old hut in the world that was inhabited only a few times during its centennial history of intrepid explorers.

Although it is a total of one hundred square meters wooden building, in the last few years New Zealand has spent about four million dollars for its restoration and conservation. This is the cost of recovery of a great historical monument.

This unique building is located on the Ross Island, in Antarctica and it was used by the well-known British named Scott in his (failed) attempt to arrive first at the geographic South Pole of our planet, in 1911.

Today, as then, what surprises the few visitors who are able to visit it, only with a special permission, is the ease in which they interpret the domestic and familiar condition: the kitchen, the dishes, the stove and its plume of smoke, everything

helps to identify this hut, 17,000 km away from its native London, as “home”.

Why is the hut important? The first form of building which man conceived, compared to the cave, is still used as an archetype which has been surviving for centuries in our imagination, in an almost unconscious manner. It is used as a residence by the people who have not yet known the modern industrial construction, like the settlers and explorers, and, in general, when it is not possible to make mechanized vehicles arrive in inaccessible places: even today for everyone is “home”.

This PDA issue has the ambition to launch a challenge: What will be the urbanity of the future? As shown by the map of the world, which you can see in the first pages, the investigated sites are all found on the edge of the larger me-

tropolitan conglomerations. These are located at a strategic point of contact between the Western-style and modern “established” city and the often temporary and extemporaneous new settlements of communities which decide to join the metropolitan dimension, with everything which composes it.

This edge is a frontier place where you can already discern signs of fruitful contamination between the different popular models of living and the first echoes of the modernity.

Urbanization is an incredible phenomenon that is changing the world: in 2050, the world population will be around nine billion people, about 70% living in cities, with all the environmental risks and economic challenges that it implies.

Case dell’altro mondo.

Abitare impopolare nei luoghi di frontiera dell’Argentina

Città “popolare” rimanda all’idea di folla, di moltitudine, alludendo in maniera implicita ad una struttura sociale, politica ed economica fondata sulla divisione in classi (elitario vs popolare; nobile vs plebeo). Questo modello ha trovato espressione fisica in quella invenzione del vecchio mondo chiamata appunto “città”. Un dispositivo questo, in grado di agglomerare e concentrare su se stesso cose e persone, generando spesso come sottoprodotti conflitti sociali e disparità economiche, sempre più evidenti nelle megalopoli contemporanee.

C’è stato però un tempo nella storia urbana del mondo nel quale si era manifestata la possibilità di scelte insediative alternative a questo “cortocircuito urbano”, che spesso in maniera forzosa e autistica sembra incatenarci alla città, vista come unico destino e orizzonte possibile per l’umanità.

Nel mondo ispanico la parola “popolo” si traduce con “pueblo” che vuol dire anche “villaggio”. La ricerca di una vera civiltà del vivere e dell’abitare “popolare” sta forse proprio nella piccola dimensione comunitaria del villaggio?

Può sembrare un discorso anacronistico, in tempi nei quali lo scenario sembra tendere verso una urbanizzazione totale del mondo, una “gobal city” senza via d’uscita. C’è stato un tempo - quello delle migrazioni nel nuovo continente del XIX e XX secolo - nel quale molti hanno scelto di abitare senza popolare…Finita l’epopea delle grandi fondazioni di città anche nel nuovo mondo, molti migranti e coloni europei, in genere provenienti dalle regioni rurali del continente, rifiutarono la città, spingendosi alla ricerca di nuovi spazi, in cui realizzare il proprio sogno individuale attraverso un nuovo e allo stesso tempo antico atto: la costruzione della propria casa.

Unpopular dwelling in the frontier places of Argentine

The concept of “popular” city reminds the ideas of crowdness and moltitude, referred to a social, political and economical structure based on class division (elitist vs popular; noble vs plebeian). This model found its expression in that creation of the old world called “city”. A device able to gather and accumulate things and people, often giving as an output social conflicts and economic inequalities even more evident in the contemporary megalopolis.

There was a time in the urban history when you had the possibility to inhabit and dwell in different way from the classical urban “short circuit”, that seems to be the only destiny for mankind on the planet.

The word “people” can be translated into the Spanish “pueblo” that means “village”. Maybe, the search for a real and authentic civilization can be found in the small comunitarian dimension of the village? It can sound anachronistic, in the present time in which the scenary seems to tend towards a total urbanization, a sort of “global city” with no way out.

There was a time - that one of the migration movement to the new continent in the XIX and XX centuries when many people decided to inhabit without populate...After the age of the big foundation of the cities even in the new world, many migrants and European colonizers, generally coming from the rural regions of the old continent, rejected the city, deciding to push themselves in search of new spaces, in which to set up their individual dream by a new and at the same time old action: to build their own home. issue #8 / global popular city / winter 2017 15

IMMIGRAZIONE La lettera di Leonardo, emigrante italiano in Argentina, a distanza di oltre un secolo, restituisce una cronaca dai colori ancora vivaci di quella che fu una sorta di epopea collettiva, il movimento migratorio degli Italiani - potremmo dire degli Europei in generale del vecchio Continente - verso l’America “calda”, come la chiamavano gli emigranti provenienti dall’Italia meridionale. È un resoconto che nella sua brevità riferisce essenzialmente due cose: un viaggio compiuto da Buenos Aires verso la città di Paranà, situata a Nord nell’entroterra argentino, lungo il corso dell’omonimo fiume; la situazione dei “gringos”, come venivano chiamati gli immigrati, impiegati nella costruzione di una piazza, in attesa per l’assegnazione di un pezzo di terra…

Possiamo dunque immaginare speranze, sogni, progetti di tutta una vita, dopo un viaggio lungo e rischioso; il desiderio di coltivare e costruire qualcosa che fosse finalmente “loro”, di uscire dallo stato di proletari, di “peones”, poveri prestatori di manodopera, per conquistare finalmente lo status di colono, magari fare fortuna o, semplicemente, vivere del proprio lavoro, in una dimensione di conquistata libertà.

Questa ricerca di un proprio “el dorado” non prevedeva però come destinazione finale la città, in questo caso Buenos Aires. Qui i migranti avrebbero trovato lavoro come operai all’interno delle industrie o sarebbero dventati manodopera nella logistica portuale, ma di rado avrebbero potuto aspirare ad avere una casa o un terreno di loro proprietà. Dopo un periodo di quarantena sull’ Isla Martìn, nell’estuario dalle acque marroni del Rio de La Plata, superate le colonne d’acciaio del Puente Avellaneda (rispettivamente l’Ellis Island e la Statua della Libertà argentina) i migranti approdavano al porto de La Boca.

Qui si aprivano due possibili strade: decidere di restare in città, o tentare l’avventura pionieristica nelle pianure agricole della pampa. Le prospettive di vita che si sarebbero aperte rispetto a queste due scelte erano opposte: vivere in città, all’interno dei “conventillos” (abitazioni collettive sovraffollate) contribuendo alla formazione di quella cultura urbana creola che è diventata il tratto identificativo del paese; oppure andare alla ricerca di uno spazio “vergine” da colonizzare.

La prima era una scelta dal carattere “sociale” fortemente aggregativo; la seconda invece un’opzione anti-urbana, espressa nella casa isolata all’interno del lotto di terreno, in una condizione o di completo isolamento, o al limite, di costituzione di una piccola comunità autosufficiente. Nel primo caso il nuovo immigrato dovrà fare appello alla propria capacità di adattamento agli spazi che la nuova città spesso caotica e congestionata potrà riservargli; nel secondo, egli dovrà essere in grado di crearli, addomesticando e ritagliando spazi abitativi all’interno di una natura ancora incontaminata e spesso inospitale.

MIGRATION The letter by Leonardo, an Italian emigrant to Argentine, gives back a still vivid tale of that popular epic that was the migration movement by Italians - but we can say by Europeans in general from the old Continent - to the “hot” America, as migrants coming from South Italy called it. It is a brief report telling essentially two things: a trip made from Buenos Aires to the city of Paranà, in the Northen outback of Argentine, along the stream of the same river; the condition of the “gringos”, as they called the immigrants, employed in the construction of a square, while waiting for the assignment of a piece of land...

So we can imagine the hope, the dreams, the projects of an entire life, after a long and risky travel; the desire of growing and building something which could be finally “theirs”, of getting out of their condition of proletarians, “peones”, getting the status of settler, maybe making fortune, or simply living of their work, in a situation of gained freedom.

This search for their “el dorado”did not have the city, in this case Buenos Aires, as a final destination.

Here indeed migrants would had found job as workers inside the factories or in the harbour logistics. But thay could hardly strive for a home or a piece of land of their property. After a period of segregation on the Isla Martìn, in the brown-colored estuary of Rio de La Plata, crossed the iron gate of Puente Avellaneda (the Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty of Buenos Aires), migrants finally landed in the harbour of La Boca.

Here two alternative options: to decide to stay in the city, or to accept the challenge of the pioneering adventure in the “pampa” flatland. The prospects of life would had been radically different for the two choices: on one side, to live in the existing city, inside the “conventillos”

(overcrowded collective houses) being part of the creation of that mixed urban culture which has become the hallmark of Argentine; on the other, to go in search of a “virgin” space to colonize.

The first was a “social” choice, based on the trust in urban community; the second instead was an anti-urban option, based on the idea of the house in the farmland, in a condition of isolation or, at least, of constitution of a small rural selfsufficient community. In the first case the newcomer would had trusted on his skills of adaptability to the spaces the new hosting and often congested city could had granted to him; in the second, he should has been able to create them taking living spaces from a nature still uncontaminated and often inhospitable.

Tornando al nostro Leonardo Placereano e al suo viaggio, metà sulla terra ferma e metà sull’acqua, possiamo immaginare quello che avrebbe sicuramente visto lungo il corso del Rio Paranà, a sua volta un emissario del più grande Rio Paranà Guazù, il potente fiume che getta le sue vaste ramificazioni all’interno dell’immenso estuario del Rio de La Plata. Un’immensa foresta pensile sulle acque argillose del fiume, innervata da un fitto intreccio di canali, rivi, affluenti e subaffluenti, fino ad arrivare alle città coloniali con un piede sulla sponda del fiume e l’altro tra i campi di grano della pampa. Così il nostro protagonista sarà passato dai villaggi di Campana, Zarate, e via fino a Rosario e Santa Fe - Paranà più a Nord. Paesi che hanno nel fiume l’unica via di comunicazione con il mondo.

TIGRE Lungo questo itinerario in fuga dalla città si incontra Tigre, un piccolo centro fluviale che sorge in prossimità della foce del Rio Paranà, un tempo luogo di frontiera, oggi estremità Nord della grande conurbazione di Buenos Aires, punto di contatto tra la dimensione costruita dell’attuale metropoli e l’immenso bacino naturale del fiume. Nato a metà ‘800 come mercato di vendita dei prodotti agricoli coltivati nell’entroterra con la città di Buenos Aires, Tigre si è sviluppato come centro turistico, luogo di evasione borghese degli abitanti della città alla ricerca di uno svago extraurbano.

Già all’inizio del ‘900 sorgono i primi hotel e circoli di canottaggio (famoso il Museo Navale della Navigazione). La cittadina diviene così luogo di vacanza dei porteños scelta anche dai presidenti argentini (è visitabile anche la Casa Museo di Domingo Sarmiento*, una struttura di legno incapsulata all’interno di una teca di vetro). Tigre non sfugge al fenomeno del turismo di massa e diviene luogo di seconde case per la media e alta borghesia.

Arrivando oggi a Tigre e prendendo il vaporetto che percorre il Rio Lujàn si ha un effetto straniante. La sensazione è quella di trovarsi in piena laguna veneta, non quella storica e “urbanizzata” di Venezia, ma piuttosto quella rurale e marinara degli isolotti e dei casoni dei pescatori, dove la natura è una presenza ancora dominante, seppur fragile e controllata. Il vaporetto arranca lento sul fiume tra i fronti alberati, compatti e a picco sull’acqua, che a tratti si aprono come sipari, perforati da pontili di legno protesi come rami sull’acqua. Le case, disposte a intervalli regolari e leggermente arretrate rispetto alla sponda, sorgono su palafitte, al riparo dai venti e dalle alte maree. Hanno la caratteristica forma a capanna e sono direttamente collegate ai pontili che funzionano come moli di attracco per i vaporetti.

Basta un cenno per essere avvistati in mezzo al verde della vegetazione e al marrone delle acque del fiume. Il conducente del vaporetto accosta all’ormeggio per sbarcare e accogliere i passeggeri. Certo, come in laguna, tempi e distanze sono delle variabili fuori controllo, ma se hai una buona compagnia e un bicchiere di mate allora l’attesa non è snervante e magari è anche un’occasione per fare qualche riflessione…

Going back to our Leonardo Placereano and to his travel, half on the land, half on the water, we can imagine what he could have seen for sure along the stream of the Rio Paranà, emissary of the larger Rio Paranà Guazù, the powerfull river which from the waterfall at the border between Argentine and Brazil, pushes its wide ramifications into the vast estuary of Rio de La Plata. A large forest hanging on the clay water of the river, cut by a dense weaving made of canals, branches, tributary rivers, thus arriving to the colonial towns, half on the shore of the river and half on the wheatfields of the pampa. So our protagonist would had passed through the villages of Campana, Zarate, till Rosario and Santa Fe-Paranà in the North. Towns that have the river as the only comunication with the world.

TIGRE Along this route leaving the city you arrive to Tigre, a small center rising near the estuary of Rio Paranà, once a border place, today the North end of the great conurbation of Buenos Aires, still contact point between the dimension of the metropolis and the vast natural basin of the river. Settled in the mid ‘800 as a market place for agricultural products grown in the outback, Tigre turned itself into a touristic place for the middle class dwellers who escaped from the city in search of suburban recreation.

At the beginning of ‘900 the first hotels and rowing centers arose (like the famous Naval Museum of Navigation).

The village became a holiday place for porteños chosen even by the Argentinian president (you can also visit the House Museum of Domingo Sarmiento*, a wooden structure encapsulated within a glass case). Tigre did not survive the mass tourism, becoming a place for middle and upper class second houses.

To arrive to Tigre and take the steamboat that flows on the Rio Lujàn gives you an alienating effect. The feeling is of being in the middle of Venetian lagoon, far from the historical and urbanized Venice, rather in the rural and seafaring environment made of islets and fishermen’s huts, where nature is still a dominant presence, although fragile and controlled. The steamboat slowly plods on the water, between the tree-lined fronts, compact and overhanging the water, that sometimes open like curtains, perforated by piers extended like branches on the water. Houses at a regular intervals are slightly backward built on wood pillars and protected from wind and high tides. They have the characteristic shape of a hut and are directly related to the piers that function as the docks for the ferries. Just a sign to be spotted in the middle of the green of the vegetation and the brown waters of the river. Of course, as in the lagoon, times and distances are out of control variables, but if you have a good company and a glass of mate then the wait is not nerve-wracking, and maybe it’s also an opportunity to do some reflection ... issue #8 / global popular city / winter 2017

CASA TIPO Oggi Tigre sta andando incontro ad un forte sviluppo edilizio. Basta spostarsi un centinaio di metri verso l’interno rispetto alla linea del fiume per trovare i tipici resort in stile “Palm beach”. Residenze di lusso tutte dotate di attracchi personali per i motoscafi, disposte secondo forme fittiziamente organiche attorno agli specchi d’acqua. Così la fisionomia ambientale più autentica di questo luogo rimane quella che si affaccia lungo il fiume dove hanno trovato posto le case più antiche di questo insediamento, fatto di edifici unifamiliari in legno e lamiera che punteggiano in maniera regolare e diffusa il corso del fiume.

Una forma anche questa di “città popolare”, perché espressione di un sentire comune anche se non coagulato nelle forme aggregate tipiche della città. Una geografia rarefatta, in un certo senso “antisociale e anti urbana”. Una scelta di isolamento, forse di rifugio, alla ricerca di un rapporto individuale con la natura.

Certamente un modello che ha subito le sofisticazioni culturali di stampo borghese (il mito della seconda casa in campagna, la celebrazione della proprietà privata). Tuttavia non è da sottovalutare lo spirito ingenuo e autentico delle sue prime manifestazioni spontanee.

In effetti, questo “farsi casa da sé” utilizzando le risorse e i materiali che la natura mette a diposizione in quel dato ambiente prescelto, facendo appello alle proprie conoscenze tecnologiche, in una condizione di non preesistenza e di assoluto inizio, rappresenta forse un’attitudine innata in ogni uomo. Una tendenza che la civiltà urbana moderna, tutta assorbita dalle logiche del mercato, ha ormai rimosso dal proprio orizzonte esistenziale. Ma riaffiora talvolta come archetipo ricorrente, interpretato nelle forme moderniste della “glass house” di miesiana memoria, oppure nella veste neo ruralista della capanna in versione “high tech” con tetto a falde alla Murcutt.

Quest’ultimo modello di casa pare avere attualmente un certo seguito come tipologia abitativa nei territori rurali della pampa, come anche lungo la costa argentina. Un esperimento che tenta l’ibridazione del concetto di casa con le forme e i materiali del capannone agroindustriale. Un abaco ripetibile di materiali industriali e naturali, nodi semplici, superfici continue, geometrie elementari. Distacco dal suolo, struttura esile in legno, involucri leggeri in pannelli, tetto a doppia falda...

Si proprio il tetto, primo segno di presenza e protezione dell’uomo sul pianeta, punto di contatto tra la terra e il cielo.

HOUSE TYPE Today Tigre is undergoing a strong building development. Just moving a few hundred metres inland from the riverbank you can find the typical “Palm beach” - style resort. Luxury residences, arranged in fake organic shape around the ponds, with private piers for motorboats. So the most genuine environmental aspect of this place is the one that overlooks the river where there are the oldest houses of this settlement, made of detached building in wooden structure and metal sheet, regularly widespread along the river.

This is also a form of “popular city”, as expression of a common feeling in specific time, even though not condensed in the compact and aggregated formulas of the city. A rarefied geography, in a sense “anti-social and anti-urban”. A choice of insulation, maybe of refuge, looking for a personal and intimate relationship with nature. Certainly a model that has undergone the cultural sophistication of bourgeois mold (the myth of the second house in the country, the celebration of private property). However, do not underestimate its naive and authentic spirit of the first spontaneous results.

Actually, this “making home by himself ”, using the resources and materials available in that particular place, relying on their technological knowledge, in a state of no pre-existence and absolute beginning, all these things are part of a native instinct in every man. An attitude that the modern urban civilization, absorbed by the logic of the market, has now removed from their horizon. But sometimes it comes out, as a recurring archetype, played in modernist forms of the

“glass house” of Miesian memory, or in the guise of neo rural hut in “high tech” with a pitched roof to Murcutt.

This last model of house seems to be a fashion trend as house type, both in the territory of the pampas and along the coast of Argentine. An experiment that attempts hybridization of the concept of home with the forms and the materials of the agro-industrial shed. A repeatable schedule of industrial and natural materials, simple knots, continuous surfaces, elementary geometry. Detachment from the ground, slender wooden structure, lightweight casings panels, double-pitched roof... La costruzione necessaria

Quando si parla di architettura in maniera generale e senza le dovute accortezze, si fa spesso riferimento a costruzioni con una qualità alta e costruzioni con una qualità bassa.

Queste ultime derivano in genere il loro poco apprezzamento dal fatto che non recano la firma di un progettista noto e apprezzato dal pubblico e non hanno una particolare valenza storica, magari per il fatto che non sono censite in nessuna guida turistica. Sono quindi, diremmo, opere minori, architetture del popolo o popolari, se si preferisce un aggettivo che ricorda il neorealismo. E’ come se esistesse quindi una discriminante tra certa architettura di serie A ed altrettanta architettura

When talking about architecture in a general manner and without due attention, we often mean to buildings with a high quality and with low quality.. These latter are often little appreciated because not bear the signature of a famous designer and appreciated by the public and not have a particular historical value, perhaps to the fact that they are not registered in any guidebook.

They are therefore, we would say, minor works, architectures of the people or popular, if you prefer a neorealist adjective.

It is as if we had then a discriminating between certain standard A architecture and B architecture or, if you like, between the official and unofficial

Una buona costruzione, inoltre dovrebbe sempre partire dalla solidità (purtroppo tema di grande attualità,

It ‘s hard to take a stand and decide which path to follow in order to appreciate and also understand architectural quality in the various buildings as they appear, and in terms of the criteria with which we tend to classify them.

The thing is that the real value of a building, (also translated into economic value), must contemplate the aesthetic perception that it shows.

What is constructed arbitrarily, spontaneously, or, yet respectful of the law, without an overall design not always is therefore a bad architecture.

Per tornare al nostro tema, osserviamo che spesso i tasselli che compongono i piccoli quartieri abitati da gente umile (umile nell’animo ancor prima che a livello

Necessità: primo impulso del progetto D’altra parte, gli studi e le ricerche contemporanee, escludendo il settore delle cosiddette archistar, sembrano orientate sempre più su un tipo di costruzione spontanea, ambientale, che rispetta il luogo da cui nasce e che si insidia per un fattore di necessità. Tutte queste peculiarità ce le tramanda la gente comune che costruiva cento o duecento anni fa (andando indietro sino alla preistoria!) che ha dato vita, talvolta, ad inedite e sorprendenti stravaganze creative, concependo ottimi esempi di COSTRUZIONE NECESSARIA. Quest’ultima è solida, funzionale, ecosostenibile, rivoluzionaria da un punto di vista estetico. Per esempio, nei rifugi a ridosso di un costone roccioso (magari creati nello stesso materiale del costone stesso ), in contesti peraltro scelti con rara intuizione, capacità e lungimiranza oggi spesso assenti, si trovano già applicate tutte le regole di certa architettura contemporanea,(basti pensare ai peri bacalari in Cappadocia). La bizzar-

We learn all these peculiarities from the ordinary people who built one or two hundred years ago (going back up to the prehistory!), the same people that sometimes made unusual and surprising creations, devising good examples of essential building. The latter is solid, functional and eco-friendly, revolutionary from an aesthetic point of view. For example, in shelters near a rocky ridge (perhaps these made of the same ridge material), in contexts also chosen with rare insight, ability and foresight often absent today, you can see already applied all the rules of certain contemporary architecture, ( just think of the Cappadocia peri bacalari).

The oddity of history is often that years of study and research in the field of building technology and in the form of architecture, result in a layout very similar to what the

Abbiamo ancora molto da imparare dalle maestranze delle epoche passate in termini di solidità, efficienza energetica, eco-sostenibilità, come la chiamiamo noi oggi.

D’altra parte la globalizzazione e l’invasione delle città ci regala scene a tratti agghiaccianti, dalle celebri favelas brasiliane agli insediamenti di Ma-

PA S T Bacău è una delle tante città rumene profondamente rinnovate nel tessuto urbano tra gli anni ‘70 e ‘90 mediante la costruzione di edifici dall’architettura omogenea, tali da renderla una “città architettonicamente socialista”. Nel momento in cui venne realizzata l’area centrale non esistevano elementi architettonici identici, e furono selezionati alla sopravvivenza e conservazione solo edifici significativi come il Palazzo Amministrativo, il Comune, il Teatro Bacovia e la Chiesa di San Nicola.

Si potrebbe dire che a differenza delle città della Transilvania, per esempio, che hanno ereditato i propri centri storici ancora ben conservati, la città di Bacau, in gran parte, si trova nella situazione di quasi totale assenza di patrimonio storico. Inoltre, alcuni edifici antichi e significativi sono stati lasciati in rovina per colpa di una legislazione carente e miope, che non permette lavori di restauro tranne quando si dovessero verificare condizioni piuttosto

Molto interessanti le teorie di negozi, dalle dimensioni medie o addirittura minuscole (anche due metri quadrati) apparsi negli anni recenti ai piani terra lungo le strade principali, in genere ampliando i vani verso la strada con superfetazioni piuttosto semplici ma efficaci.

The Romanian architect Teodor Anghel, for example, has explained that there are indeed some areas of interest that could constitute, at the moment, specific reference points for citizens: the square of the prefecture, the square of the Orthodox Cathedral and the Florescu square. These main points, on the other hand, should be linked according to a full spatial plan of organization in order to properly create a central zone. In other words, it is important to re-evaluate the central area through meticulous planning studies, sociology, movement, spatial references, and whatever is needed in order to realize a zonal urban plan.

We are used to a “type” of city easily recognizable from its historic center, which is more or less preserved, surrounded by simple architectonic suburbs, single-family or apartment buildings, which date back to the “economic boom” years. In its essence, Bacau appears as a modern urban center made up of high quality buildings, medium or low, multi-storey.

However, a true regulation which can ensure uniformity of the facades does not seem to exist. By observing carefully the architectural heritage, a certain individual diversity, without being completely negative, restores a certain characteristic to each building, revealing at the same time something of its inhabitants.

The city does not seem to have wanted to expose its past by

exalting itself in some way, with rare exceptions such as the building of the Prefecture. The town is, at first sight, completely made up of cement while the open and dedicated spaces to nature are many and widespread: nearby each building there is a vast green area. However, mention should be made, that sometimes the only public green spaces seem to be the parks, squares and gardens, while the relevant areas of the condos are maintained by the City Hall’s minimum wage.

The most important city landmarks are the Orthodox churches, the

University, the largest shopping mall “Arena Mall”, the local markets (covered or not), the places where you can eat take-away such as Mc Donald’s. The stores are quite interesting. They can be medium-sized or even tiny (two square meters) which have appeared in recent years on the ground floors along the main roads. These stores require space on the street with superfluous additions, rather simple but effective.

Blurring the boundaries between conventional dichotomies of formal and informal, the Indian urban fabric is continuously updated by everyday users, who correct its planning failures. Dense and lively, the neighbourhood comes across as a close-knit living ecosystem underpinned by an intense connection between the built environment and the user group.

Participation in this context takes the form of unmediated negotiation between the users, who

spontaneously adapt the rules and programmes of the space to their everyday needs, thus becoming themselves active agents of change. In light of these observations, the project sought to explore designâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s potential to support different forms of user engagement with the urban landscape and reinforce ongoing social, economic and environmental dynamics.

The Pols are understood as a space for interaction and mediation that sustains collective living, and thus democratizes public space in a renewed domestic dimension.

The project ultimately reflects on an expanded meaning of public space, while challenging the way it is conceived and produced.

An itemized analysis of the area revealed the need to reduce the scale of intervention and reorganise neighbourhood spaces around the day-to-day collective experiences of the inhabitants.

The proposal conceives an adaptive system of micro-intervention prototypes that functions on the small-scale, replaces obsolete infrastructures and allows the community to manage their own resources; including water, electricity and waste.

Five test cases were identified as representative sites for describing how the system operates and implanting a network of interconnected devices that positively

transform and regenerate those scenarios. Intervention devices are designed to reorganize the existing urban scene by restoring the identity of the public space as a place for daily activities and intensification of social life. These artifacts are conceived to harness local resources, materials and technologies, with a high commitment to social and environmental sustainability.

Rather than determine a fixed design solution, the project offers a catalogue of tools that refers to appropriate and appropriable technologies.

A number of structural systems, climate control mechanisms and recycling technologies, were categorized in order to preserve and update traditional know-how.

Accordingly, the catalogue takes into account the specificities of the place and local structures of production, along with the environmental impact and social relationships associated with production. Here, technologies define the contexts of knowledge that fosters common intelligence and self-organisation. Innovation and technology transfer play an important role in social development through their contributions to city growth.

The wide range of urban tools is provided to allow for flexible adjustments to a constantly changing urban fabric. Each transformation device is conceived

to respond to site-specific conditions of five case study scenarios: the new housing blocks, the rooftops, the incidental common courtyards, the vacant spaces and the main entrance of the Pol. They are taken as a working instrument to test particular interventions that despite different scales, functions and construction processes, all have a shared architectural language. I locali più numerosi sembrano essere i bordelli (in Messico la prostituzione è legale), i locali notturni e soprattutto le farmacie e gli studi medico-dentistici: l’alto costo dei medicinali e delle cure dentistiche negli Stati Uniti infatti porta moltissimi statunitensi a varcare il confine, anche considerando che il Dollaro possiede un valore molto più alto del Peso. Per questo Tijuana appare al visitatore come un’immensa zona franca formata da gente umile e spesso

disperata, ad uso e consumo degli statunitensi, che vengono attirati dagli esercenti in ogni modo, dalle gigantesche insegne al neon, alle band di improvvisati mariachi, fino a forme tragicomiche di travestimento.

Tijuana is a Mexican city which we already discussed in our fifth issue, “Urban wounds and scars”. It is a large city of almost two million “official” inhabitants which, unfortunately, became well known for its development along the border. The American policy, which recently has changed because of Donald Trump’s immigration initiatives, has radically characterized the expansion, the shape and the society. In fact, the megalopolis arises right on the border with the

United States protected by a range of massive fences and concrete walls. Since the U.S.AMexico War (1848), Tijuana was found to increase in population and size because of the thousands of people who are constantly trying, from there, to emigrate, mostly illegally, in Alta California. Arriving from Coronado island beaches to the nearby city of San Diego, full with villas and famous for surfing, it is almost alienating. From the U.S.A the border can be crossed with an unbelievable easiness. By surpassing the “thickness” of the “wall”, you are greeted by a number of stalls with screaming merchants, loud music, and more or less paved roads.

Tijuana is a city that does not show clear signs of any particular urban quality. Many nei-

ghborhoods are in the hands of criminals and, unless the purpose of the trip is to procure false documents, it is better not to go there. The buildings are built with cheap and low materials, often decorated with large signs. It does not seem to be any particular organized urban spaces for the collective life, with exception of the large covered markets formed by the workshops of many microsellers, mostly food (there are also cabins of some shoeshine), according to a very reminiscent style of the historic district markets of southern Italy.

studies. In fact, the high cost of medicines and dental care in the United States lead many Americans to cross the border even considering that the dollar has a much higher value than the Peso. For this reason, Tijuana appears to the visitor like a huge free zone made up of humble and often desperate people for the consumption of the Americans, who are lured by the merchants in every way, from the giant neon signs, to the improvised Mariachi bands up to the tragicomic forms of disguise.
