Anton Tkachuk

FOUNDING

Architecture student and Visualisation Artist born in Kazakhstan. Anton have studied his bachelor degree in Architecture at Manchester School of Architecture. During his second year Anton became interested and started to observe different visualisation styles and techniques used in architecture. His 2nd year project Revival of the Public house has been shortlisted and exhibited at the Future Architect of the Year Award held by Manchester Society of Architects in 2015.

Later on he has been awarded Rossant Award by BDP (Building Design Partnership) for the best visually presented portfolio in his year group.

Following these achievements Anton decided to develop his skills in visualisation further and took part in Masterclass #18 at State of Art Academy. He studied advanced modelling, rendering and postproduction used in most visualisation studios across the globe.

His 3rd year of Architecture school Anton have spent in Continuity in Architecture atelier. He has developed a renovation of public realm and Utopian Community Estate scheme on the site of Manchester Oxford road station. Physical model produced for his thesis was nominated and shortlisted for B.15 Mecanoo Modelmaking award, awarded for the advanced use of modelmaking.

After graduating from the MSA, Anton have joined BDP in their Headquarters in Manchester and worked on a number of competitions and projects. For the competition bid Springfield Park masterplan in Liverpool, the biggest project Anton have worked on, he developed visualisations and physical model. BDP have recently been confirmed as a winner of this competition. Anton have recently made a decision to pursue a career in architectural visualisation and will be joining Forbes Massie’s team at his office in London soon.

La tecnica è quell’insieme di azioni strumentali che aiutano l’uomo nella risoluzione di determinati problemi. La tecnologia, che per definizione utilizza la scienza per risolvere procedimenti complessi, è una compagna ormai insostituibile del nostro agire quotidiano.

A questo proposito, da un po’ di tempo mi pongo una domanda: quanto e soprattutto in che modo, il processo relativo alla produzione e allo sviluppo della tecnologia influenzano l’agire e la felicità degli uomini?

E’ difficile immaginare la contemporaneità senza scienza e tecnologia: senza di quest’ultima in pratica non si parla di sviluppo. Ed essa serve per migliorare la qualità della vita, almeno in teoria. La tecnologia, si sa, tocca tutti i settori, di conseguenza influenza la nostra vita in maniera notevole.

Ricerca e sperimentazioni sono spesso fini a se stesse, o assecondate alla produzione di prodotti appetibili alle masse perché di tendenza.

Per veicolare questi cambiamenti ed utilizzare meglio gli strumenti tecnologici è necessaria un’ampia riflessione ed un cambiamento di rotta a livello culturale.

Sviluppare questo tema in chiave esaustiva, sarebbe auspicabile, in un mondo sempre più vittima dei propri clichè di stampo post-futurista: velocità-crescita uguale sviluppo. Certo, ma quale sviluppo?

Gli interrogativi si moltiplicano e diventa sempre troppo arduo, sia da un punto di vista pratico che filosofico avventurarsi in queste questioni.

I tempi che stiamo vivendo sono caratterizzati da: velocità nel lavoro, e per converso in tutti gli aspetti legati alla vita quotidiana, estrema sintesi razional-minimalista nei processi di lavoro e nell’arte, uso indiscriminato della tecnologia come già detto. Inoltre, in un contesto che per definizione brulica di complessità, e di informazioni quantomeno confuse, ciò che si percepisce nell’aria è un grande bisogno di razionalizzazione, di etichettatura e di sintesi (a volte estrema).

Ciò che non è ancora chiaro a tutti, è che il pilota dello sviluppo della tecnologia, e con essa dell’umanità di oggi, ce lo insegnano pensatori come Galimberti o Baumann, è la tecnica. Come dire che il fine del progresso è il progresso stesso e non il fatto che si facciano nuove scoperte funzionali ad uno scopo.

Nella progettazione complessa, con i sistemi integrati di progettazione, parliamo soprattutto di domotica e di classe energetica, con tutto ciò che questo implica in termini di costi e di contenuti effettivi e duraturi sul progetto. Bisogna osservare che spesso si installano impianti e apparecchi vari nel rispetto delle normative vigenti, e si ottiene un progetto finale non in linea ne con la salvaguardia dell’ambiente, ne con la sostenibilità economica auspicate in fase progettuale.

La stessa psicologia è ancora divisa tra il polo dei meccanicisti ed il polo degli anti meccanicisti. Il primo considera l’uomo come una macchina determinata dalle scienze esatte della neurofisiologia e della biochimica. Il polo anti meccanicista considera invece l’uomo come una persona capace di scopi, aspettative, emozioni. Noi pensiamo che la verità non esista, e, se esiste, si colloca a metà tra le due scuole di pensiero.

Infine, un altro tema che ricorre per necessità, ed è in pratica la chiave di tutti i numeri di PDA: il lavoro sulla città.

L’idea forte è sempre la stessa: non perdere mai di vista il cambiamento, giocare sempre in attacco (pur con un dialogo diplomatico) per mettere in luce ciò che non va, ciò che andrebbe cambiato, nei centri storici e nelle periferie, e cercare come sempre di sviluppare delle riflessioni e se possibile, delle proposte.

Anche queste ultime proposte, concedetemi la battuta, debbono avere il carattere della sintesi, come esige il tempo del tweet telegrafico, quasi come se fossimo in balia delle onde e necessitassimo di un salvataggio immediato, (un giusto compromesso con la tendenza attuale va fatto!).

Questo lo spirito che vogliamo perseguire per cercare, con il giusto slancio, di essere al passo con i tempi. Rispettare le regole, a volte, serve solo per poterle trascendere!

LThe fast development mechanics The technique is that set of instrumental actions that help man in solving certain problems. Technology, which by definition uses science to solve complex procedures, is an irreplaceable companion of our daily work. In this regard, I have been asking a question for a while: how and in what way does the process of producing and developing technology influence the actions and happiness of men?

It is hard to imagine modernity without science and technology: without it, in practice, it is not about development. As we know it serves to improve the quality of life, at least in theory.

Technology, we know, affects all sectors, and consequently influences our lives remarkably. What is not yet clear to everybody is that the rider of the development of technology, and with it of today’s humanity, as they say Galimberti or Baumann for exam-

ple, is the technique.

That is like saying that the end of progress is progress itself, not the fact that new functional discoveries are being made for a purpose. In the field of medicine, when serious diseases are cured, due to scientific discovery, there is little doubt that science (and technology) are serving humanity. So it is right from an etymological point of view to talk of progress.

The question is whether the terms of scientific-technological research have as an ethical goal the improvement of the quality of people life.

Often research and experimentation are ends in themselves, or based on attractive products to the masses because very fashionable.

It is necessary a broad reflection and a change of cultural course, in order to

shift these changes and to use the technology tools better. It would be desirable to develop this theme in a comprehensive way, in a world increasingly victim to its post-futuristic clichĂŠs: growth equals to development. Yes of course, but what development? The questions are multiplying and is always difficult, both from a practical and philosophical point of view, to face these issues.

The times we are living in are characterized by: speed at work, and conversely in all aspects related to daily life, extremely rational-minimalist synthesis in work processes and art, indiscriminate use

In complex designs, with integrated design systems, we talk above all about home automation and energy class, with all that it implies in terms of cost

and of the essence itself and the meaning of a project. It is important to conceive houses that are an ecological model because they meant to improve the quality of life, and not just to comply with the law.

A dialogue with the project commissioner and with the institutions responsible for enforcing the laws is always to be hoped!

Two good starting points are: to be ready for a serious confrontation and changing opinion, along with a moderate and correct use of technology, no longer a constraint, but as a development tool as it should be. And this is

not just in the field of architecture. Working in this way of thinking, it would make it easier many of the complex issues related to what we have now superficially learned to call: liquid modernity.

In this issue we want to make a reflection, a century after Le Corbusier, about the concept of the machine. Today we refer not only to the car or to the Machine of Abiteur, but to something that involves both virtual and invisible spheres of our actions, our movements and therefore our space.

The house, understood as a dwelling machine, (beyond the rationalistic-functional dogmas of the twentieth century) must include niches of irrational spaces, in the sign of discontinuity and flexibility as compared to a rigid structure: some real relief valves.

This is to prevent rationality from exceeding the critical carrying capacity. In fact, because of its nature, man is inclined to change and to movement needed for his own survival conditions.

Finally, another recurring and fundamental theme, in practice the key to all PDA numbers: the study of the city.

The strong idea is always the same: not to lose sight of change, always to be offensive (albeit with a diplomatic dialogue) to highlight what is wrong, what should be changed, in historic centers and

outskirts, and seek as always to develop reflections and, if possible, proposals.

Even these latest proposals, give me the joke, must have the character of the synthesis, as the telegraphic tweet requires, almost as if we were in the wake of the waves and we needed an immediate rescue (a right compromise with the current trend must be done! ).

This is the spirit we want to pursue to seek, with the right impulse, to be in step with the times. Sometimes to respect the rules only serves to transcend them!

Even today, critical literature is divided between those who wish to return to the rationality of spaces against those who want a space totally fluid, in aesthetic terms.

The same psychology is still divided between the pole of mechanics and the pole of anti-mechanics. DAVIDE DI COLA UNA SCUOLA DI PENSIERO TEMPORALE E FILOSOFICA PER UNA NUOVA ARCHITETTURA

S - Davide, per prima cosa parlaci degli episodi salienti dei primi anni della tua vita professionale, quelli che ricordi con maggior affetto o che ti hanno segnato.

D – Sin da piccolo ho potuto “respirare l’Architettura” nello studio di mio Padre - LDC Architettura – nella città dove sono nato, Formia.

La prima esperienza importante la ebbi nel 2009 da laureando, un tirocinio (all’epoca, era obbligatorio per la laurea) presso la società Pronaves, uno spin-off dell’Università di Roma Tre che si occupava di progettazione navale.

Approfondire la progettazione all’interno di spazi geometricamente più complessi di quelli edilizi era davvero stimolante.

Pronaves promuoveva tecnologie all’avanguardia per la propulsione elettrica o in ibrido. Per farlo progettava motori polifunzionali capaci sia di far muovere l’elica che di generare corrente per gli spazi abitativi. Questo permetteva di ridurre gli spazi dei locali tecnici a vantaggio dello spazio abitabile; era uno sforzo teso a sostituire totalmente l’oleodinamica (un sistema farraginoso a cui bisogna dedicare molta manutenzione) con l’elettronica di controllo.

Appena “presi possesso” della mia scrivania mi diedero il compito di progettare una stazione di attrac-

co per una banchina ecologica.

Con questo progetto partecipammo al Festival Internazionale sull’energia – Lecce 2009 - e ci classificammo primi tra centinaia di progetti intervenuti da tutta Europa.

Ricordo che mi chiamò in riunione l’allora titolare dell’Azienda Stefano Carletti, comunicandomi l’assunzione a patto di laurearmi al primo appello disponibile, nel 2010, cosa che feci!

Eravamo in 4 in ufficio: L’Amministratore unico Dott. Stefano Carletti, persona incredibile - e, a detta di molti, il più grande esperto di nautica dal dopoguerra ad oggi - nonché il presidente Prof.

Paolo Del Vecchio capo del dipartimento di Elettrotecnica dell’Università di Roma Tre, l’Ing. Maurizio Serao esperto strutturista e programmatore; mentre io, in breve tempo, diventai responsabile degli elaborati progettuali della società di ingegneria.

Nel 2013 ritornai a Formia e incominciai a lavorare come Project Manager nello studio di mio padre Luigi. Cominciai ripensando un’abitazione di proprietà, e le maestranze – forse colpite dal mio approccio professionale nella progettazione ed in cantiere - mi proposero come progettista in molti loro cantieri.

In un lavoro Pubblico, dove fui progettista e direttore dei lavori,

conobbi Bruno Quirino, uno dei titolari dell’Azienda “Centro Italia Marmi”, che vedendo la mia abitazione decise di affidarmi l’incarico tecnico di ristrutturare una sua proprietà. Da tecnico di fiducia, diventai presto consulente per la sua azienda – ruolo che svolgo tutt’ora.

Nel 2015 venivo coinvolto da un imprenditore edile – Williams Di Cesare – come progettista ad un concorso per la realizzazione di una fontana monumentale a Gaeta in Piazza della Liberta. Avevo molte perplessità che una fontana adibita a spettacoli di giochi d’acqua fosse adatta come installazione all’interno di una rotatoria stradale, perchè c’era il pericolo che l’automobilista ne risultasse troppo distratto. Considerata la scadenza del bando il 17 di Agosto del 2015, avendo da tempo prenotata una vacanza a Lampedusa, mi trovai costretto a lavorare sull’isola. Quel sacrificio non fu vano, il mio progetto vinse e l’opera fu inaugurata nell’ottobre del 2016, con gli ornamenti in Marmo della Centro Italia Marmi; ad oggi mi divido tra lo studio professionale ed il lavoro di consulenza in quest’azienda.

S - Di cosa ti occupi nel campo dell’estrazione e vendita dei marmi?

D – Il mio compito all’interno dell’Azienda è creare una programmazione industriale capace di sviluppare la Società, individuando i mercati da aggredire e le attività da svolgere per facilitare la commercializzazione del prodotto. L’azienda ha 45 ettari di cava, e controlla tutta la filiera dall’estrazione fino ai lavorati, quindi il lavoro che devo svolgere è abbastanza delicato e complesso.

Tramite la collaborazione di alcuni laboratori di materiali lapidei, ho codificato in maniera scientifica le caratteristiche del Perlato Royal Coreno – che è un materiale davvero interessante, perchè poco poroso, quindi utilizzabile in luoghi freddi perchè non si rompe a causa del congelamento dell’acqua; inoltre esso è asettico, atossico, resiste anche ad alte temperature… insomma, un materiale

universale!

Assieme allo staff tecnico ed al management Aziendale ho promosso personalmente iniziative correlate con gli Ordini professionali, ed in ultimo, un concorso internazionale di Idee, che ha visto vincitori tre giovani professionisti di Venezia: Manuel Marchesin, Alessandro Caiffa e Giacomo Pasian.

S - Dalla tua storia professionale emerge un lavoro da architetto ma anche una necessità costante: la conoscenza della tecnologia, intesa sia come elemento innovativo che come uso sapiente delle caratteristiche dei materiali. Pensi che il professionista di oggi debba sempre lavorare molto sull’impiantistica, gli elementi di risparmio energetico, la domotica, nel contesto del progetto di un’abitazione?

D - La contemporaneità impone di seguire la tecnologia. La tecnologia però deve essere un mezzo, e non deve contaminare la progettazione ma risultare utile per sfruttare le opportunità. Per esempio, se iniziassi a disegnare direttamente in cad per definire un’architettura – anziché codificare l’idea con un disegno a matita - non riuscirei a sintetizzare in maniera rapida i miei concetti ed il mezzo tecnologico – in questo caso il CAD – condizionerebbe in maniera negativa la progettazione. Un altro inganno sulla tecnologia, esasperato dalle pubblicità e trasmesso a noi tecnici dai clienti, è la domotica “a prescindere”. Per esempio, se volessi utilizzare a tutti i costi la domotica all’interno di un appartamento di 50mq, non farei bene il mio mestiere, in quanto, ciò che controlla la domotica diventa interessante in spazi più ampi. Il mezzo tecnologico è senz’altro uno strumento da adottare e proporre, ma sta alla nostra intelligenza di tecnici comprendere quali tipologie scegliere ed i tempi per farne buon uso al fine di avere vantaggi sulla realizzazione finale di un opera.

S - Questo discorso mi ricorda la storia del vostro motore ibrido,

perché mi è parso di capire che il tutto era nato dall’osservazione che componenti e aspetti dell’imbarcazione tradizionale come la propulsione diesel e quella elettrica potevano lavorare meglio tra loro.

D - Si, la tecnologia deve riuscire a risolvere un punto di domanda del mercato. Tocca a noi progettisti capire cosa serve davvero: e non è detto che la soluzione più avanzata o moderna sia la cosa più utile!

S - È una questione quindi che tiene conto di determinate performance, cioè più diventa utile e migliore sarà il risultato.

D - Si. L’utilizzo della tecnologia

S - Una cosa interessante dell’ambito navale è per esempio la componente tempo: il progetto si muove ed ha anche bisogno di mutare velocemente a seconda di diverse situazioni possibili, rimanendo confinato in una cellula ristretta. Cosa insegna questo ad un progettista, che potrebbe essere applicabile al progetto di un edificio?

D - Oggi molti progettano tenendo conto che l’opera dovrà cambiare, altri, secondo il principio che la loro opera dovrà essere immutabile: sono due scuole di pensiero diverse. La mia scuola di pensiero è temporale e filosofica, penso che i mutamenti siano deve essere applicata nel rapporto parte del nostro vivere. orizzontali: una carena è qualcosa di più complesso. Serve una forma mentis particolare, ad esempio saper progettare “architetture piccole” ti aiuta nella progettazione di quelle grandi, mentre del contrario non si può dire. Quando progetti uno spazio grande ragioni sulla superficie, mentre quando lavori su uno spazio piccolo devi ragionare sul volume, e per ogni elemento devi immaginare un utilizzo polifunzionale.

tempo ho capito che questo ha dei limiti. Io ho sognato da bambino di vivere in un’imbarcazione, perché immaginavo che fosse allo stesso tempo una casa e mezzo di spostamento, ma crescendo e studiando ho capito che non è così.

Pensa ad un coltellino svizzero, ossia ad un piccolo oggetto con diverse funzioni: quando hai una vera necessità,comprendi che quel piccolo arnese non può sostituire ogni attrezzo anche se credevi di avere tutto. Le cose polifunzionali hanno questo forte limite.

S - Mi hai parlato di progetti che hanno tenuto conto di esigenze nautiche, come i sistemi della Pronaves, e di altri che hanno tenuto conto del codice della strada e delle esigenze di visibilità degli automobilisti. Alla luce di quanto detto, qualcuno potrebbe definire i tuoi/vostri progetti come funzionalisti?

D - Senz’altro, ma non solo. Io i miei progetti li definirei “di committenza”, cioè tali da comprendere (anche nel senso di “includeD - Io ho visitato l'Unità di Marsi- re”) i desideri del committente, glia e Berlino, le ho trovate inteconferendogli un linguaggio ressanti; ma se immaginassi una architettonico. S - Abbiamo discusso di esigenze mutevoli e nuove tecnologie, ma molto è già stato costruito, tanto da sopperire a buona parte delle esigenze abitative attuali. Come faranno le nostre città storiche ad adeguarsi?

D - Il PRG, principale strumento di controllo sul territorio in Italia, è qualcosa di molto arido; ritengo che sarebbe preferibile un piano programmatico di città condivisa - un menabò, uno studio architettonico che scenda nel dettaglio. Tutte le ammi-

nistrazioni , con le proprie economie di spesa, dovrebbero poi impegnarsi a seguirlo negli anni. Casa e città sono la stessa cosa, spazi per l’uomo.

Il controllo della città basato sulla suddivisione in piccole aree, è l’errore principale del PRG. In alcune città, vi sono difficoltà insormontabili, che ti costringerebbero a diventare drastico un pò come Nerone (certo, non così drastico!).

Penso ai borghi, che sono molto caratteristici della nostra penisola: gli interventi locali promossi dai privati, non sono sufficienti per garantirne la sicurezza in caso di sisma o di frana, ma occorre

un piano programmatico, nazionale: è inutile rinforzare la propria abitazione se quella accanto crolla sulla tua con un effetto domino. I grandi interventi di cui parlo sono messi in atto solo quando è tardi: se si continua così, spariranno tutti i borghi d’Italia! Parliamo di due approcci diversi, uno preventivo, programmato e strategico dove si progettano gli interventi nel corso degli anni, ed uno (quello attuale) demandato ai privati che spesso non hanno la capacità organizzativa ed economica per affrontare l’intero problema.

S - Nel tempo questo ha portato anche alla moltiplicazione della burocrazia, allo svilimento della

professione dell’architetto - che perde di vista il lavoro metaprogettuale per risolvere piccole situazioni - e alla frammentazione del suo lavoro, non solo in termini di importanza degli interventi ma anche in ambiti diversi. Rimane la speranza che questi problemi siano sempre più presenti al mondo politico, onde avere un cambio netto delle strutture legislative a sostegno della nostra professione di architetti e urbanisti.

D - Io parlo con grande trasporto perché credo che siano discorsi importanti: tocca a noi giovani impegnarci perché tutto cambi in meglio.

A school of temporal and philosophical thought for a new architecture S – David, tell us firstly about the initial moments of your professional life, those which mainly influenced and affected you.

D – Since I was a child I was able to “breathe” the architecture in my father’s study – LDC Architecture – in the town where I was born: Formia. I had my first important experience during a training, before graduating, in 2009 (at that time, training was necessary in order to graduate) at the Pronaves society, a spin-off of Roma Tre University which was dealing with naval planning. Observing the planning within spaces much more complex than those buildings, geometrically speaking, was really challenging.

We were four in the office: the only administrator Stefano Carletti, an incredible person and, according to some, the biggest naval expert since WW2 till nowadays; the president professor Paolo del Vecchio, head of the Electrical Engineering department of Roma Tre University; Maurizio Serao, expert structural engineer and programmer; while I, in a short period of time, became the person in charge with the engineering society’s projects.

In 2015, I was requested by a building entrepreneur – Williams di Cesare – to be a planner for a competition of the realization of a monumental fountain in Gaeta, in Piazza della Libertà. Taking into consideration the deadline of the work, on 17th of August 2015, having my holiday in Lampedusa booked, I found myself forced to work on the island. Perlato Royal Coreno – which is a material really interesting because it is less porous, therefore usable in cool places because the freezed water renders it unbreakable.

Furthermore, Perlato Royal Coreno is aseptic, non-toxic and it resists to high temperatures too… in other words, it is a universal material!

Together with the technical staff and the agency’s management, I personally promoted activities with the professional Orders and, finally, an international competition of ideas which was won by three young professionals from Venice: Manuel Marchesin, Alessandro Caiffa and Giacomo Pasian.

S – From your professional history emerges the work of an architect, but also a permanent necessity: the knowledge of technology perceived not only as an innovative element but also as a masterly usage of the material characteristics. When planning a building, do you think that the nowadays professional should always work hard on the plant, on the elements of energy saving and on home automation?

D – Contemporaneity implies following technology. However, technology needs to be a medium and should not contaminate the planning, but be useful in order to take advantage of the opportunities. For example, if I begin to draw directly into the CAD in order to define the architecture – instead of expressing the idea through a pencil drawing – I would not succeed to synthesize quickly my concepts and the technological means (in this case the CAD). Therefore, this strategy would negatively affect the planning. Another deceit of technology, highlighted

by mass-media and shared to us by clients, is the home automation of “regardless”. For instance, if I by all means want to use the home automation inside of a 50 smq flat, I would not do a good job because the element which controls the home automation becomes interesting in larger spaces. The technological medium is, undoubtedly, an adopting and suggesting tool; nevertheless, is our own intelligence, as technicians, which comprehends which typologies to choose and the periods of time in order to have finally good results of a certain work.

THE ARCHITECT’S TASK IS TO SOLVE HIS CUSTOMER’S IDEAS BY SHAPING AND RENDERING THEM HARMONIOUS.

S – This topic reminds me of your hybrid engine because it seemed to me to have understood that everything was created by the observation of the elements and aspects of traditional ships such as the Diesel and electric propulsion which worked well with each other.

S – Then it’s a matter which takes into account certain performances, which is the more necessary it becomes, the best will be the result.

D – Yes. The use of technology must be applied on behalf of the faced expense and the received advantage. If not, it can be considered equal to an ornament.

S – The mentality which you developed seems pretty effective and universal. For instance, I think that it is easily applicable even to an airplane or a transatlantic.

D – In the naval field, the thing which mostly interested me was to understand the three dimensions.

In architecture, we often deal with vertical walls and horizontal attics: a hull is something more complex.

It is necessary a particular shape; for instance, knowing how to plan “small architectures” helps you in the planning of those bigger, while the contrary cannot happen.

When you plan a large space, you think about the surface while when you plan a small space, you need to think about the volume and for each element you need to imagine a multifunctional use.

S – An interesting element about the naval field is, for istance, the concept of “time”: the project moves itself and it also needs to change quickly according to different possible situations remaining, thus, confined within a tight cell.

spaces. The city control based on the subdivision in small areas is the main error of the PRG. In some invincible difficulties (such as the existence of low quality buildings) cause us to be a little bit drastic just like Nero (of course, not so drastic!). I think about the villages that are typical of our Peninsula: the local interventions promoved by private agencies are not enough to guarantee the security in case of an earthquake or landslide; however, it is needed a national programmatic plan: it is useless to reinforce your own house if the one nearby falls over yours like a domino piece. about which I talk happen only when it is too late: if it is carried on like this, all the Italian villages shall disappear! We are talking about two different approaches, an estimated, programmed and strategic one which plans the interventions during the year, and an actual one delegated by the private agencies which often do not have the economical and organizational capacity in order to confront the issue.

LA MACCHINA SCENOGRAFICA di La Macchina Studio Enrica Siracusa, Gianni Puri

Il progetto “Add it up!” è stato presentato in occasione della 15. Mostra Internazionale di Architettura - Biennale di Venezia, all’interno dell’esposizione UP! Marghera on stage presso il Padiglione Venezia, a cura degli Architetti PPC di Venezia su invito del Sindaco di Venezia.

La Macchina Studio è stato selezionato, assieme ad altri sette giovani studi di architettura, per aprire un dibattito e offrire uno slancio immaginativo per la rigenerazione dell’area di Porto Marghera.

“Add it up! Ovvero Come emergere dalla laguna” descrive uno sviluppo adattivo e incrementale dell’area di Porto Marghera attraverso la riappropriazione degli impianti dismessi ad opera di attività “staminali”, ad alto potenziale rigenerativo, capaci di riattivare il tessuto urbano circostante, incoraggiando una trasformazione sostenibile e consapevole della laguna veneta.

La globalizzazione dei processi produttivi e la terziarizzazione dell’economia nazionale hanno cambiato il volto delle maggiori aree industriali italiane: oggi quasi la metà dell’area di Porto Marghera è libera da attività produttive oppure è occupata da impianti dismessi.

Il progetto individua tre stadi evolutivi corrispondenti ad altrettanti passaggi temporali.

Si parte dal 2016 con la prima fase di colonizzazione fino al 2030 in cui si apre il periodo di consolidamento fino al 2050, per poi passare alla fase di sviluppo del processo che culmina nel 2100.

Considerando il tessuto urbano come un tessuto organico, costituito da un insieme di cellule associate per funzione, si prevede di intervenire attraverso l’inserimento di attività in grado di innescare un processo di guarigione.

La vocazione produttiva dell’area di Porto Marghera si conserva nella dimensione logistica e direzionale e si rinnova attraverso la ricerca, lo sviluppo e la creazione di prodotti o servizi innovativi ad alto valore tecnologico.

Nell’ambito della rigenerazione dei tessuti urbani rientrano anche le reti infrastrutturali e quelle ecologiche che necessitano di essere ripristinate o implementate, per concorrere ad un livello superiore di organizzazione cellulare, capace di svolgere un ruolo determinante all’interno dell’organismo città.

L’area industriale di Porto Marghera è considerata un Sito di Interesse Nazionale per l’alto rischio ambientale rilevato. L’estensione dell’area e la vicinanza alla città giardino non incoraggiano un tipo di bonifica che richieda la movimentazione o la rimozione dei terreni, così si prevede un trattamento in situ operato per mezzo di fitotecnologie.

La capacità di alcune piante di interagire con le sostanze contaminanti presenti nel suolo è messa a sistema con la necessità di rinaturalizzare un’area profondamente degradata dal punto di vista ambientale che merita invece di essere recuperata e tutelata.

Il ripristino delle connessioni ambientali genera reticoli ecologici che incrementano la biodiversità, riducono le emissioni di CO2 e producono biomassa, generando così nuove economie.

Dall’anno 2030 si prevede la crescita del sistema e il proliferare di nuove attività rigeneranti per l’organismo-città.

Di pari passo si persegue il raggiungimento dell’autosufficienza energetica per l’intero sistema a partire dall’introduzione di dispositivi per la produzione di energia pulita.

Inoltre, al fine di limitare il consumo di suolo, il progetto prevede una crescita addizionale ai manufatti esistenti riattivati ed energeticamente autosufficienti.

Dal 2100 i cicli di produzione dell’energia diventino collaborativi e sistematici, poiché l’azione additiva e incrementale di nuove volumetrie a consumo di suolo zero, moltiplica la produzione di energia pulita e ne garantisce la distribuzione su tutto il territorio.

Il metabolismo urbano di Porto Marghera diviene un modello riproducibile, capace di generare nuove risorse materiali e immateriali.

La nuova città che rinasca dalle ceneri di un secolo che si è concluso e che si apra ad un futuro socialmente, economicamente ed ecologicamente sostenibile.

Il Palazzo dell’Aeronautica UN’ARCHITETTURA PER L’AVIATORE

All’interno del vasto panorama dei palazzi storici romani, merita attenzione uno dei casi più emblematici legati all’architettura di Regime, il Palazzo dell’Aeronautica, edificio che vale la pena visitare per via di numerosi aspetti interessanti legati allo stile, prettamente funzionalista, alle scelte decorative, agli aspetti tecnologici

L’edificazione del palazzo nacque dall’esigenza di dotare di una sede stabile la neonata istituzione dell’Aeronautica Militare così come Marina Militare ed Esercito, già dotate di una sede . Italo Balbo - famoso aviatore e ministro della Regia Aeronautica dal 1929 al 1933 – fu il principale promotore dell’iniziativa di costruzione e altresì ispiratore dell’allestimento

interno e delle caratteristiche tecniche, mentre l’architetto convocato per l’occasione fu il giovane Roberto Marino.

Tutto il complesso, di forma rettangolare con tre corti interne, si basa su una rigida idea di efficienza che si ritrova dalla progettazione alla realizzazione, dalla decorazione all’arredamento.

L’edificio doveva presentarsi esternamente austero e grandioso ed essere di grande solidità. Ne risultò un edificio di grande impatto volumetrico, che sorprende ancora oggi nonostante il tessuto limitrofo si sia saturato col passare dei decenni. sono presenti tre avancorpi e quello centrale presenta, a coronamento della sommità, un maestoso acroterio ad ali stilizzate che ricordano quelle dell’idrobombardiere S55, e un’aquila centrale.

Struttura possente L’edificio è caratterizzato da una struttura in cemento armato (una tecnica costruttiva a quell’epoca non universalmente nota in Italia) piuttosto possente, in quanto, in sede progettuale, l’architetto scelse volutamente di sovradimensionare calcestruzzo e acciaio al fine di generare una struttura sicuramente solida; questa caratteristica ha conseguenze anche sotto il profilo estetico, e ha consentito in tempi recenti la realizzazione di un eliporto sulla copertura. Grazie ad una rigida organizzazione del cantiere, i lavori, che cominciarono il 1 agosto del 1929, si conclusero dopo appena ventisei mesi, il 28 ottobre del 1931.

Austerità e simbolismo Il portico d’ingresso introduce ad uno spazio circondato da pareti rivestite in lastre di travertino su cui sono incise delle epigrafi in cima che riportano le date di inizio e termine dei lavori, ma ciò che è più evidente è l’esteso elenco – il cosiddetto lapidario - che riporta i nomi dei caduti in volo dell’Aeronautica, con caratteri rigorosamente della stessa grandezza, aggiornato ancora oggi.

Gli uffici, ad esempio, si trovavano in vasti ambienti suddivisi con tramezzi in legno e vetro, come i moderni open-space; lo spazio dedicato alla pausa pranzo era definito aero-mensa ed era pensato per consumare i pasti in piedi al fine di ottimizzare i tempi; un essenziale sistema tecnologico, ormai non più presente, era la cosiddetta posta pneumatica, un particolare sistema di distribuzione postale che si sviluppava con una rete di canali, per un totale di ben 36 km, e permetteva di inviare la posta in bussolotti da un ufficio all’altro in modo rapido. Un ulteriore marchingegno interessante, probabilmente uno dei fiori all’occhiello del complesso, era il sistema dell’ascensore a bilanciere: era chiamato Paternoster e collegava i vari piani con una serie di cabine sulle quali occorre salire “al volo”, perché in continuo movimento- che andavano su e giù secondo una traiettoria circolare perpetua.

Queste caratteristiche hanno contribuito a rendere unico questo complesso, ancora in buona parte ben conservato nonostante gli sione dal soffitto, una catena che eventi bellici. Numerose sono le caratteristiche funzionali e tecnologiche, derivate in parte da sperimentazioni contemporanee americane, che rendono infine l’edificio ancora più significativo, perchè ci permettono di intuire come la mentalità dell’aviatore, abituato a spazi tecnologici, si sia ripercossa sulla progettazione architettonica.

Mighty structure The building is characterized by a reinforced concrete structure (a constructive technique at that time not universally known in Italy) rather mighty, as in the design stage the architect deliberately chose to over-dimension concrete and steel in order to be sure to create a solid structure; this feature also has an aesthetic effect, and has recently allowed the creation of a heliport on the roof.

likewise, the artificial lighting systems, chandeliers - or rather, lighting device, as they have been called - consist of a series of brass circular frames surrounded by opal slabs and have, as a ceiling suspension system, a chain that recalls the anchorage of the seaplane; similarly, door handles remind the wings of an airplane.

Plants + organization = building There are many functional and technological features, derived in part from contemporary American Thanks to a rigid organization of the yard, the works, which began on August 1st, 1929, ended after just twenty-six months on October 28th, 1931.

These features have contributed to making unique this complex, still largely well preserved despite war events. In fact, it has such a rigid organization of spaces and functions, and such a hybridization between building and plant network, to remember more a transatlantic than the headquarters of a ministry of the 1930s.

Austerity and symbolism The entrance porch introduces a space surrounded by walls covered with travertine slabs on which are engraved on top epigraphs showing the start and end dates of the works of construction, but the most evident is the extensive list - the so-called lapidary - showing the names of the Air Force’s victims, with characters of the same magnitude, updated today. Costruita dai francesi nel 1794 con il nome Unité, la HMS Surprise era una fregata preda bellica e successivamente in servizio per la Royal Navy inglese, usata dallo scrittore Patrick O’Brian per buona parte del suo ciclo di romanzi “Master and commander” (21 volumi). Tali libri ne hanno tanto esaltato la bellezza e le qualità, che per l’omonimo adattamento cinematografico il regista Peter Weir (L’attimo fuggente, Truman show) ne ha richiesto la ricostruzione fedele, con una copia galleggiante e una seconda in bacino.

La fregata, nel XIX secolo, è forse quanto di meglio la tecnologia navale sia riuscita a realizzare prima dell’uso dei metalli per le imbarcazioni: enormi edifici galleggianti, costruiti in materiali naturali, esse erano lunghe da 40 a 60 metri, possedevano un armamento di una quarantina di cannoni, imbarcavano anche più di 200 marinai e non erano destinate ai grandi scontri navali. Le loro caratteristiche di media stazza e la grande superficie velica permettevano una velocità all’epoca considerevole, e per questo erano destinate a cacciare i mercantili nemici o navi di pari stazza, sfuggendo facilmente ai grandi vascelli ma costituendo una minaccia importante per il nemico. Le missioni affidate a queste navi erano spesso in solitaria, non avendo bisogno del particolare appoggio che una grande nave (e le sue bocche da sfamare) reclamavano, ed essa poteva visitare anche piccoli porti periferici: ciò ne faceva un comando molto ambito, per via della grande libertà concessa e delle ricche possibilità in termini di preda e bottino, per marinai e comandanti.

Tecnologicamente, le fregate del XIX secolo erano un vero gioiello di efficienza, realizzate con una perfetta integrazione delle conoscenze, tradizioni, capacità di figure differenti e professionalmente avanzate.

Le linee dello scafo erano progettate minuziosamente per sfilare sull’acqua a grande velocità, e lo scafo stesso era realizzato in legno robusto secondo una tradizione antica di migliaia di anni, rivestito poi in rame. I progettisti conoscevano le particolari esigenze di una nave che dipende completamente dai venti per velocità e direzione, e ottennero grandi superfici veliche e la possibilità di deviare dalla direzione del vento anche di 60°. All’interno, 200 persone dovevano vivere e combattere, a volte senza sbarcare per diversi mesi: ciò comportava che ogni spazio andava immaginato nelle tre dimensioni, per contenere viveri adeguati, alloggi, munizioni, medicine, attrezzature e legnami per le riparazioni in mare, eccetera. La fregata, più del grande vascello, ha l’esigenza di conciliare in poco spazio esigenze duali: le esigenze della guerra in mare come della navigazione pacifica; quelle della raffinata classe degli ufficiali, diverse rispetto ai semplici marinai; quelle di una nave con cucina funzionante per 200 persone e un nutrito armamento ma costruita di legno corde e tela, facilmente infiammabili; non ultimo, quelle di alloggi che funzionassero in mare, dove per intenderci un’onda può scaraventarvi giù dal letto.

La saturazione di ogni spazio, purtroppo, non era possibile a causa delle esigenze di movimento durante la battaglia e le operazioni di fuoco con i cannoni.

La realizzazione delle fregate fu davvero, quindi, un’impresa fuori dal comune, e solo la genialità dei costruttori, dei comandanti e dei marinai stessi permise di risolvere questi problemi a prima vista irresolvibili.

Un principio che venne tenuto presente era l’adattabilità. Per esempio, il ponte coperto che ospita i cannoni veniva usato per gli alloggi. La maggior parte del ponte diveniva durante il giorno una mensa, e durante la notte una camerata dove venivano appese delle amache sospese per i marinai; non vi era intimità e il marinaio riponeva gli oggetti personali in una cassetta personale. Nella zona poppiera delle pareti smontabili in legno dividevano una parte del ponte per destinarlo a piccole cuccette per gli ufficiali, e infine a una stanza minuscola per il comandante.

Durante la battaglia, in pochi minuti ogni cosa era smontata e riposta per trasformare il ponte in una lunga batteria. La nave imbarcava solo il necessario e lo stivava in modo da non compromettere la stabilità dell’imbarcazione. Venivano imbarcati piccoli animali vivi, come le galline, per avere uova e per macellarli alla bisogna. Si preferivano i viveri a lunga conservazione, contando di averne di freschi durante le soste. Le bevande alcoliche erano sempre a bordo, perchè si conservano bene e risultavano graditissime ai marinai. alloggiava e operava chirurgicamente nel corso dei combattimenti, spesso su tavoli improvvisati e col movimento costante della nave. Ogni elemento aveva una tipologia di riferimento che lo standardizzava, perchè, dopo la battaglia spesso quasi ogni cosa andava riparata da abili capimastri, che spesso con legno di recupero si occupavano di tutto, dalle bare agli alberi maestri, fino alla scrivania del capitano, il che richiedeva grande abilità e una mente versatile e intelligente e la presenza di un esperto velaio e di un fabbro dotato di fucina. Il capitano aveva accesso, nella privacy del suo isolamento, a libri, carte e strumenti (acquistati dal capitano stesso in base alle sue possibilità economiche) come il barometro, essenziale per prevedere i capricci del tempo, bussole sestante e cronometri per calcolare rotta, posizione e velocità con buona approssimazione, garantendo all’equipaggio di compiere la crociera e tornare a casa.

Built by the French in 1794 under the name of Unité, the HMS Surprise was a deceiving war prey and afterwards it was used by the British Royal Navy. Such books glorified the beauty and quality which for the same cinematographic adaption the film director Peter Weir (“Dead Poets Society”, “Truman Show”) asked the exact reconstruction with a floating copy and a second one in the basin.

The ship, in the XIX century, was probably the best one ever created by the naval technology before the invention of metals for boats. Giant floating buildings, made up of natural materials, were 40-60 metros long and they had an equipment of about forty guns.

The ship was not designed to be engaged in battles and it could also receive more than 200 sailors on it. The medium tonnage and large surface characteristics allowed an incredible speed for those times, and for this, those ships were designed to hunt down the enemy merchants or ships of the same sizes. HMS Surprise could also easily escape big ships constituting, however, an important threatening for the enemy. The ships’ missions were often solitary, and they did not need any particular support which a big ship (and its sailors) required. HMS Surprise could also visit small suburban harbors: this rendered the commanding… because of the great available freedom and rich possibilities in terms of prey and booty, for sailors and commanders.

From a technological point of view, the ships of the XIX century were a true jewel of efficiency realized with a perfect integration of knowledge, tradition, capacity of different and professionally advanced shapes.

The lines of the hull were attentively designed in order to navigate on water at a great speed, and the hull itself was made up of strong wood, covered in copper, according to an ancient tradition of thousand of years.

The creators knew the particular requests of a ship which depends on the wind for speed and direction; in this way, they obtained big sailing surfaces and the possibility of deviating from the wind’s direction even with 60°. that each space was imagined in three dimensions - for containing living individuals, lodgings, munition, medicine, tools and wood for reparations, etc. HMS Surprise had a greater requirement than the big ship: it wanted to include in small spaces different elements: the requirements of a sea war such as the peaceful navigation; the requirement of an elegant officer class, different from the sailors’ one; a ship with a functioning kitchen for 200 persons and a rich arming made up, however, of wood, ropes and cloth, easily flammable; finally, resisting lodges which, during the sailing, would not have been destroyed by the waves.

The saturation of each space, unfortunately, was not possible due to the movement requirements during the battles and gun fire operations.

The realization of the ships was, therefore, an imaginable task and only the genius minds of the constructers, commanders and sailors themselves allowed to resolve these issues, initially thought impossible to be resolved. However, a principle which was still essential was the adaptability. For instance, the covered bridge which was hosting the guns was used for the lodgings. The most part of the bridge was becoming during the day a canteen, while during the night a dormitory where hammocks were hung for the sailors; there was no intimacy and the sailor was placing the personal belongings in a personal box. In the stern area of the removable wooden walls, the sailors were sharing a part of the bridge for the officers’ small bunks, and finally a tiny room for the commander. During battle, in few minutes every thing was removed and placed for rendering the bridge a long battery.

The ship was embarking only the necessary supplies and it stowed them in order to not compromise the boat’s stability. Small living animals were embarked such as the chickens, for their eggs and meat. Long living creatures were preferred, taking also into consideration to have fresh ones during the stops. Alcoholic drinks were always on board because they were conserved well and they were adored by the sailors. In the protected ship bowels, there were conserved the explosives and the room where the board doctor was living and operating surgically during battles, often on improvised tables and constant movement of the ship.

Each element had a reference typology which standardized it because often after the battles, almost everything required reparations by capable craftsmen who often, with recovering wood, took care of everything, from coffins to main mast till the captain’s desktop. All these required great ability, intelligent and versatile mind, the presence of a sailmaker expert and blacksmith. The captain had access, in the privacy of his isolation, to books, maps and instruments (bought by the captain himself on behalf of his economic possibilities) such as the barometer, which was essential the forecast the weather, sextant compasses and chronometers for calculating the route, position and speed with great approximation, ensuring the crew to accomplish the cruise and return home.
