THE WAREHOusE Imagine becoming part of an enterprising community developing ideas and businesses in Barking and Dagenham, based in a new warehouse space created for residents with open access.
Imagine becoming part of an enterprising community developing ideas and businesses in Barking and Dagenham, based in a new warehouse space created for residents with open access. We have moved into a warehouse in Thames Road, Barking and are busy creating a new type of space in the borough. This will be a place where residents can come to make things together - new products for new collaborative businesses or just work informally and learn new skills. What is a makerspace? It’s a new type of workspace with lots of exciting equipment. The Warehouse will have different types of spaces and machinery, for wood work, digital design, fashion and fabrics, for cooking in an industrial kitchen, and co-working and event spaces. Open access There will be no costs for using the space for Barking and Dagenham residents. Members that love using The Warehouse will be part of looking after the spaces and equipment and sharing skills within the community. They will also be involved in organising how the spaces will be used, giving as much access to as many people as possible. Build update The plans have changed a little, with a build in Dagenham East delayed, so we will likely be working from 47 Thames Road for the rest of 2019.

Lots of residents have been asking and exploring what kind of environment would be needed to make it possible for families to come to The Warehouse to design, make and tinker together. Together we have co -designed an initial framework for the first 3 months to test how this might work in practice. We also wanted to keep in mind that people without children might need times when they can work without children in the building.
Open hours for the first 3 months We are busy creating spaces and equipping them for the opening We Make Our City Festival on the 16th March 2019. This will be the first official open day, but we want to invite people to help co-design the space and help ensure that the equip the space the best way we can with people who are going to use it. You are invited to Co-design Workshops on the following evenings:
A Family Making Day One day a week families will be welcome to attend and bring their children with them. Children will be their parents responsibility and will be allowed to accompany their parents throughout the space, except in areas with dangerous equipment. For the first three months this will be Tuesday 10am - 8pm. On the other days when the space is open children will still be welcome but will need to be looked after by a parent or other adult in the Imagination Space only. Mini-makers There will be a Mini-makers resource section in the Imagination Space where families will be able to use equipment designed for younger children e.g. sewing machines. Imagination Space and Collaborative Childcare It is planned that a space in the Warehouse will be created for younger members to play, create and make. This will also be a good place for parents to look after each others children to allow for bursts of concentrated work or for using more dangerous equipment. Playleader Session There will be one four hour session per week with a playleader on Thursdays . This will enable families to engage fully with the Collaborative Business Programmes. Please see the website for times.

WELCOME TO EVER
2019 looks like it is going to be an incredible year! People across the borough are working together every single day of the week, pouring their creativity and energy into these projects, ranging from cooking, making, sewing, playing, growing, sharing, composting, film, writing... and all the while chatting with new friends and drinking thousands of cups of tea!
More than 4,000 people have come out to practical creative events across the borough over the last eighteen months, working with the Every One Every Day team to start more than 100 exciting projects! We will be opening The Warehouse in Thames Road in March, and two new shops, one in Marks Gate, the other in Thames over the next 12 months. The We Make Our City Spring Programme starts on the 26 February, with incredible opportunities for residents to meet their neighbours, and do enjoyable and useful activities together.
How does Every One Every Day work? Practical hands on ideas – not lots of meetings
Support for getting things going – no complicated processes
Every One Every Day builds on the ‘hands on ‘ projects that people have been creating over the last few years in their own neighbourhoods. These types of projects welcome people from all walks of life.
We welcome you to suggest ideas you would like to grow together with friends and neighbours. This project will give the support you need to bring you ideas to life quickly. The team will make things very simple - including:
These projects include: •
Find you useful spaces for the projects (kitchens, workshops storage spaces etc.)
•
Supplying materials and equipment for practical activities - no form filling for grants.
Batch cooking and community meals.
•
By arranging insurances and health and safety.
•
Food growing and tree planting.
•
Holding festivals, workshops and business programmes.
•
Trading, making and repairing.
•
Sharing skills, spaces and resources.
•
Families working and playing together.
•
Every One Every Day is going to be in the borough for a long time - at least 5 years and hopefully longer, and we hope to support residents to develop lots of projects and businesses.

“The reassurance that the Every One Every Day team will be working with me each step of the way has really encouraged me to try and start something new - its really built my confidence” - Local resident.

“Ewa riro”, also referred to as stewed beans, is a Nigerian delicacy from the Yoruba community. It’s a delicious one-pot dish. It is made by boiling beans until tender, then we stew it up with tomatoes. “Ewa” translates to beans and riro means ”stirred” so ”Ewa riro” means ”stirred Beans.”

WONDERFUL PLACE TO GROW UP There are lots of different things that make somewhere a great place to grow up: outdoor spaces, friends who live nearby, a playground within walking distance, welcoming and fun spaces to meet family and neighbours, and opportunities to play or develop your ideas.
I M LY A F
Barking and Dagenham is full of young families and beautiful green spaces for children to play in. We have three Every One Every Day shops in the borough where we have met lots of families excited to explore new projects in the borough together – including a number of parents interested in learning more about alternative ways to care for and help children learn. These conversations have led to projects such as Story Box and Play Street happening around the borough and conversations of parent-led nurseries, outdoor learning experiences, alternative education (such as homeschooling) as well as many other ideas about how to make the borough a better place to grow up. We would love to hear from you if this sounds like something you could be interested in. Pop in for a chat.
MiNi LeArNeRs Do you want to find out new and interesting ways to get your kids learning? Mini learners is an idea to get parents and children learning together, led by local mum of one, Faiza. Some green spaces transformed by residents...
St Awdrys At the end of St Awdrys Road there is a green space undergoing a transformation! Have you seen it? Work has already started and it’s not too late for you to get involved. Carole and Tim who live on St Awdrys Road, got a play street up and running so they could meet their neighbours. Since then, they’ve been planning their next project with nearby residents. They’re all eager to make their street an even better place to live. Barking and Dagenham has more green spaces than any borough in London. Along with the beautiful parks, the borough also has thousands of smaller pockets of green spaces. Residents would love to see some of these green spaces brought to life with new ideas, transforming them into useful spaces for growing, learning and playing. How does Open Corners work? It couldn’t be easier. The Every One Every Day team will support residents to bring their ideas to life as quickly and as easily as possible. 1. You and another neighbour get together and decide you would like to start a project nearby. 2. You contact the Every One Every Day team, by phone, email, by completing the form online, or by popping into your nearest shop.
Tim, Joanne, Billy, Mady and some others had the idea to create a natural oasis on the green corner. They met up during the autumn programme to plan changes to the underused patch. They worked with the Parks Team from the council to arrange the delivery of daffodil bulbs, train sleepers, soil and wood chip. The space has changed completely in the last few months, and there’s still lots to do. The locals want to construct bug hotels, make bird feeders, put up lights in the trees, and make it more inviting to all residents. We’ve planned some transformation days with the residents. This is your chance to join in, and to see how they took over an unused green space. You could even start a similar project on your street!
3. Working with the team the process involves: •
A site visit to the space you have in mind.
•
Some checks will be made with the council about the space.
•
The Every One Every Day team supports you talking about your ideas to your neighbourhoods, helping to arrange a design session using some of the items on the next page.
•
