elcome to the 2017 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. This year we are pleased to present a grand English estate designed in 1915 by renowned architects Marston & Van Pelt and built the following year for actor Samuel Hinds. The residence is just less than 8,000 square feet and sited in park-like

grounds. While the residence has an overall sense of elegance, it also is imbued with a few quirky and whimsical architectural details that are sure to delight visitors. We invite you to leisurely wander through the lovely gardens on your own or take an informative docent-led tour. An essential element of the Showcase experience is a visit to the Shops at Showcase. They have unique merchandise to appeal to discerning shoppers at a variety of price points. We are happy to welcome TasteBuds Culinary to cater our onsite restaurant. It is a relaxing place to enjoy the delicious items offered. We are immensely grateful to the extraordinary designers and the hundreds of craftsmen who worked tirelessly to create this exquisite Showcase House. They have worked miracles in ninety

days and brought flair and sophistication to every inch of the property. Thank you also to our generous Sponsors, Special Friends, Patrons and all of the Resources who contributed in a myriad of ways. The enormous contribution made by the Community Volunteers who partner with us to staff during Showcase is imperative to our success. We send a special note of thanks to our wonderful neighbors who not only tolerated our presence, but welcomed us with such kindness. We are indebted to the members of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, and especially the Benefit Committee. Their dedication and resourcefulness are legendary in the community. They unfailingly found solutions to challenges, offered creative new ideas, and inspired us with their friendship and humor.

Your Attendance Supports the Arts Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) is a 501(c)3 California corporation founded in 1948. As an all-volunteer organization, members donate their time and talents to present three annual Music Programs, administer the Gifts & Grants program and accomplish the formidable feat of producing the Pasadena Showcase House of Design as their annual fundraiser. PSHA supports a diverse list of programs including musical theater, orchestra, jazz ensembles, marching bands and choral groups at local schools, music therapy for at-risk children, funding concerts to insure that live music is available to a broad range of audiences and an abundance of other programs. Its support provides opportunities for a variety of groups, from students to seniors, to learn, enjoy and grow from their experiences. Additionally, PSHA has a longstanding history of supporting the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its community outreach programs. When you buy a ticket, dine in the restaurant, make a selection in the Shops, designate PSHA as your choice at AmazonSmile or donate directly, you become a very real partner in the contributions PSHA makes to the community as outlined on the following pages. Donations of over $21 million to support music programs have enriched the

lives of countless people and have brought a lasting legacy to the community.

Music Mobile ™ Originated and funded by Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA), the distinctive Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile™ van visits local classrooms each school year. In partnership with Pasadena Conservatory of Music (PCM), which administers and presents the program, orchestral instruments are introduced to third grade students in the San Gabriel Valley. This creative program includes robust experiential learning when students attempt to play brass, woodwind, percussion and string instruments as PSHA members assist. The Music Mobile™ program also features a multi-media presentation complete with vivid images and high quality sound. Beyond being informative, the program stimulates curiosity and encourages further exploration and appreciation of music. Teachers are given a written curriculum full of lessons designed to help students connect music to other parts of their education. Throughout the 2016-2017 academic year, Music Mobile™ will visit 30 elementary schools and give 85 assemblies to approximately 2,200 children in Pasadena, Sierra Madre, Rosemead, Duarte, Temple City, Arcadia, San Marino, La Cañada Flintridge, San Gabriel and Monrovia. The Music Mobile™ has visited nearly 125,000 third graders in local classrooms since its inception in 1971 and has received local and national awards for originality and educational excellence. This program is very close to the hearts of PSHA members. It is deeply rewarding to see the surprise and delight on the faces of the children as they experience the sounds of orchestral music, many for the very first time. Debra Qurtman Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile™ Chair A generous donation from the Wells Fargo Foundation helped to fund this program.

Youth Concert

Fourth grade students arriving for the Youth Concert Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) hosted its first Youth Concert in 1953. On March 29, 2017 over 4,000 fourth grade students from schools in the San Gabriel Valley attended the 63rd presentation. Now held at the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert ingeniously weaves musical concepts and history into an amusing storyline created especially for fourth grade students. The program is sponsored by PSHA and is developed and performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This year, cueing off of the LA Phil’s Reykjavik Festival held in early April, Maximus Musicus, the lively Icelandic mouse, took us on a journey from the sunny shores of Southern California to Reykjavik, where we explored the music and the great outdoors of Iceland. In Reykjavik’s close-knit artistic community, the contemporary music scene is indistinguishable from the rock, pop, and electronic music scenes. A hallmark of the season, the Reykjavík Festival, curated by Esa-Pekka Salonen and Daníel Bjarnason, highlights the creativity thriving in Iceland’s capital. Passing seamlessly across a wide spectrum of music, it encompasses orchestral concerts with Salonen, popular music and interdisciplinary partnerships, visual and installation art, chamber music, lectures and film. One of the annual music programs sponsored by PSHA, the Youth Concert is a perennial favorite among members because of the instant satisfaction of watching the students’ faces and hearing their laughter and applause. The wonderment begins upon arrival at that iconic building, with its fascinating architecture, and continues until the conductor’s last bow. Karen Daroca Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert Chair The Green Foundation is proud to support Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts.

began in 1985. “It’s very gratifying to recognize and support such promising young musicians in their pursuit of a classical music education,” said Jin-Shan Dai, who served as the Judging Chair. “Words like ‘gem in the making’ and ‘diamond in the rough’ are often used to describe young musicians, but what we found was a treasure trove, filled with the most beautiful jewels. The experience was both eye opening and humbling,” he concluded. The Grand Prize for Exceptional Talent and Musicianship, was awarded to Joachim Becerra Thomsen. The 21 year-old earned his Master’s Degree from the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen and is pursuing his Professional Studies Certificate in Flute Performance at The Colburn School. One judge called his performance “virtuosic and expansive.” Joachim aspires to be an orchestral musician and perform as a soloist. Teaching will also be an element of his career. “I want to pass along to others what I have discovered about music,” he said. Vikki Sung Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition Chair

The History

C

ompleted in 1916 for Pasadena residents Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hinds, this palatial estate was the first English Tudor Revival style residence designed by the illustrious Pasadena architecture firm Marston & Van Pelt. The grand residence was completed in 1916 at a cost of $25,000. It comprises 7,479 square feet and is situated on a majestic two-acre compound that includes a pool and

badminton court on park-like grounds. The legacy of this mansion is infused with Hollywood glamour, from its first owner, an actor, to serving as a set for acclaimed movies and

television programs. Most recently, it was featured in La La Land, as well as Beaches and the 1985 version of Alice in Wonderland, along with episodes of Columbo, Parks and Recreation and Mad Men. Samuel Southey (“Sam”) Hinds, was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1875. His father was one of the founders of Hinds, Ketcham & Company, a color label-printing firm and president of the U. S. Playing Card Company. The younger Hinds was educated at Harvard and New York University. In 1905, the family moved to Pasadena, where Hinds was an attorney. His firm of Waldo, Hinds & Lawrence did very well and its income stream, probably together with some family money, enabled Hinds to build his stately home in what was then known as San Rafael Heights. He shared the house with his wife Dorothy Vandervort Hinds, their three daughters and two live-in servants. Hinds became so involved in Pasadena’s social life that some friends wondered just how committed he was to the practice of law. It is said he suffered from “stage fright” in the courtroom and never pleaded a case before a jury during his legal career. Ironically, he helped form The Pasadena Playhouse and became quite an accomplished actor there. Hinds had to fall back on his acting talents full-time when the Depression hit. He lost his home, law firm, wife and children. The same day Dorothy divorced Sam, she married actor and Beverly Hills “capitalist” John F. Bell, who had also been involved in the development of The Pasadena Playhouse. Their life was not a happy one either—two years later most of their possessions were attached because of outstanding debts.

In 1929, Mr. Hinds persuaded Paramount Studios to hire him for a bit part in If I Had a Million, starring Gary Cooper and W. C. Fields. It was ironic that the broke Mr. Hinds played a millionaire. It is rumored that Mr. Hinds rented out his home but continued to live there as a boarder. Indeed, in the 1930 census he is described as a “lodger” sharing the La Loma property with an Englishborn husband-and-wife, gardener and housekeeper. However, life slowly improved for him. He would eventually act in more than 300 films, at one time earning $1,250 a week under contract to MGM and Universal. Perhaps his best remembered role was as Peter Bailey, the father of James Stewart’s character, George Bailey, in It’s a Wonderful Life.

market tents spread out on the lawn, and lush greenery surrounding it all. Just inside the gate, a round garden appears to oat in the center of a brick courtyard. With the slightest push, the garden rotates, adding a bit of fun and surprise to the English country scene. Roses and other owers, Boxwood and benches welcome guests. For those who look, there may be more surprises.

ested in the center of the magnificent two-acre estate is a babbling brook. As you take the winding walkway leading

up to the house, you approach a beautiful stone bridge with a rustic timber railing that crosses over the brook. At the headwaters of the water element, a picturesque 3½-foot high waterfall flows into the brook. The water tumbles beneath the bridge and 70 feet to its final destination. A natural flagstone patio has been created next to the waterfall for visitors to enjoy the wildlife drawn to the running water. Varieties of birds, including the Riparian: yellow warbler; the Oak/Walnut: oak titmouse; and, the Scrub: spotted towhee, have been spotted! A woodland garden has been created along the streambed to adapt to the microclimate under the beautiful mature trees. For resources please see page 96.

transform the space into a lively, updated, yet cohesive, outdoor area where the traditional and new co-exist harmoniously. Besides blending styles, we intentionally created a warm seating and dining area from which the park-like property can be appreciated. The swivel chair and sofa are great in this location! ur goal was to transform the Living Room into a bright and casual living space; a place to entertain guests, while also being

comfortable and functional for the homeowners. A textural ivory grasscloth wallcovering was installed and new window treatments were selected, opening the beautiful views to the exterior. The room was kept casual with textural linen, cotton and raw silk fabrics. Color was selectively incorporated into the room with classic navy, periwinkle and gray fabrics and accessories. A classic design aesthetic was infused to ensure that the Living Room will remain timeless and serve as a peaceful retreat for family and friends for many years to come.

he Powder Room is located under the main stairwell. Despite its tiny and hidden stature, the intent is to make this

space a jewel box for this grand home. The design is glamorous and classic. It is also unexpected and like an art installation. Though having a black-and-white color palette, the room will feel bright and fresh because of the material choices: hexagon cement tiles on the floors, antique glass tiles on one wall, and floral-and-striped wallpaper on the remaining walls and ceiling. The goal is for guests to take a deep breath, followed by a smile as they enter the space. The breath will be because the vision is a bit surprising; the smile because the space is refreshing upon viewing. For resources please see page 97.

his “Seaside Escape” master suite affords the perfect haven from the demands of contemporary life. The calming color

palette’s restful blues and neutrals offer an enticing, tranquil backdrop for a fusion of new furnishings, vintage pieces, patterns and textures. The luminous, watery envelope of the muted wall treatment recalls the gentle ebb and flow of the tide. Original hardwood floors, refinished, are granted new life, while new tile reinvigorates the fireplace surround. Fabrics in complementary hues vary from cut chenille to glazed linen to the lusciously tactile wovens. Transitional furnishings lend freshness to the space—under the watchful gaze of a 50 million year-old fish fossil-topped console. Master Bathroom is the heart of the “Seaside Escape” master suite. While its

configuration presented challenges, a thoughtful rearrangement of fixtures, along with rough plumbing improvements, results in an enlarged, generous layout. A sculptural soaking tub with mirrored exterior offers a reference point for the generous shower, twin medicine cabinets and “freestanding” vanities, and separate toilet compartment. A soothing blue, richly textured tile wainscot surrounds the room in an aqueous ambiance. In contrast, the shower showcases more curvilinear tiles, in pale aqua. Offsetting the cool hues of the abundant tile work, a sandy-toned quartzite tops the vanities, lending an earthy warmth to the palette. Oldworld craftsmanship is highlighted by intricate tracery work, dancing lightly overhead, offering this refreshed sanctuary a delightful connection to its historic past. roviding an opportunity to celebrate volume and space this design uses architectural elements, such as interlocking of massing,

solid and void, and the composition of textures to define distinct areas throughout the room. Today, a bathroom need no longer be just useful; it can be a space where one experiences light, color, texture, depth and scale. A floating countertop with a simple vessel sink has been introduced to streamline the area and a custom-designed open-shelf element is designed to meet both architectural and utilitarian goals. The solution presented here is not two-dimensional, it is a subtle three-dimensional interlaced design that guides the eyes through the elements of each space and allows the visitor to forget it is a confined, shared bathroom. aking its cue from the adjacent bedroom, the striking, multi-windowed octagon-shaped Sun Room marries the bedroom’s swank textured wall covering with jet black

wall-to-wall sisal carpet that’s layered with a plush cream area rug. The contemporary tufted linen sofa, with rock ‘n’ roll throw pillows, contrasts with the rich charcoal matte gray painted walls, which gives the room a balanced visual appeal. Side chairs with style-tospare bring an unexpected playful attitude to the space. he Nanny’s Nursery Bath is a classic, yet fresh and youthful design, embracing the stately elegance of the 1916-era home

while offering the newest on-trend materials seen in bathrooms today. Shades of teal and salmon accent the space, creating a warm and whimsical color palette complementing the finishes and fixtures selected. The flooring, a show-stopping teal and white arabesque-patterned encaustic cement tile, anchors the room. A wainscot of glazed porcelain and a pale blue grasscloth wallcovering add textural interest to the bath. Aged brass fixtures set in Carrera marble adorn the custom vanity. A flowing drape over the freestanding tub is accented by a natural beaded trim, evoking a sense of youthfulness. movement of minimalism combined with classical elements. Collectively, the entire setting can be described as warm, organic and reďŹ ned. The design includes monochrome walls, light wood oors, minimal accents, green hues and a generous collection of original artwork. The evolution of this area only begins with aesthetics. glass chandelier, the botanical theme with abstract accents from the adjacent Conservatory can be felt. A soft, antiqued Borghese ďŹ nish gives the English wall paneling a contemporary feeling. The dining set, in a dark warm walnut with antique golds is softened with muted grays and awakened with ivory, white and silver botanical place settings. While calming and luxurious, these pieces emphasize elements of quality and comfort. The room is versatile, beautifully layered and very livable. Reaching back to England’s rich Tudor period and more recently the Tudor Revival style in architecture, our Shakespeare Garden presents plants and flowers like roses and columbine from William Shakespeare’s many writings. Adjacent to the planting beds are two large succulent mosaics whose design is inspired by a ceiling from the great Hampton Court Palace. This colorful drought tolerant garden is a profusion of tile, gravel and lush sculptural succulents planted in tight formation. Pathways are ornamented with charming, handcrafted concrete pavers in the turf, punctuated by a sitting area, where the sonnets and plays of the bard can be pondered. Most members of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) volunteer because of a deep desire to help provide funding for the arts. Like all community service, the real benefits are intangible but deeply gratifying. Design and architecture aficionados are attracted to PSHA because they enjoy observing the renovation of an estate for the Pasadena Showcase House of Design and the opportunity to learn about new design products and concepts. However, it is important to note that the majority of PSHA positions are not related to design. Others are drawn to PSHA because of their belief that music programs need to be championed in the competitive arena of philanthropic funding and that such programs have enormous value to the individuals served and to the entire community. Most members find a camaraderie that often flourishes into life-long friendships. Many cherished memories have been made at the end of the day as the members debrief and share experiences. Recently, a member was asked about the legendary commitment of PSHA members. Her response was, “It is the personal stories about how these funds impact the community, especially its children, that compel us all to roll up our sleeves and work even harder. It is an honor to be a part of this legacy.” For more information contact membership@PasadenaShowcase.org.
