and the hundreds of craftsmen who make the magic of Showcase happen. They have worked tirelessly for three months to transform every inch of the property. Our gratitude also goes to our generous Sponsors, Special Friends, Patrons and all of the Resources who have contributed in a variety of ways. The Community Volunteers who partner with us to staff during Showcase are vital to our success. We also send a special note of thanks to our wonderful neighbors who not only tolerated our presence, but welcomed us. It must be noted that the members of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, and especially the Benefit Committee, are some of the best volunteers around. It takes a village to make Showcase happen every year, and the dedication and resourcefulness of our members deserve recognition. We are grateful for their friendship, support and creative solutions to the challenges. Thank you for your patronage. Your attendance has made it possible for us to contribute over $23 million in support of music programs and has brought a lasting legacy to the community.

We hope you will enjoy your visit.

THE GREEN HOUR

The 2018 Color of the Year, The Green Hour (DET544), draws inspiration from turn-of-the-century Paris, when 5 o’clock became known as The Green Hour due to the popularity of absinthe. A darker shade of gray blue-green, this color embodies the timeless sense of mystery and the creative revelry of the era.

hen you buy a ticket, dine in the restaurant, make a purchase in the Shops, designate it as your choice at AmazonSmile, or donate directly,

you support the work of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) and increase its contributions to the community as outlined on the following pages. A 501(c)3 California corporation founded in 1948, PSHA is an all-volunteer organization, whose members donate their time and talents to present three annual Music Programs, administer the Gifts & Grants program and accomplish the formidable feat of producing the Pasadena Showcase House of Design as their annual fundraiser. PSHA supports a diversity of programs including musical theater, orchestra, jazz ensembles, marching bands and choral groups at local schools, music therapy for at-risk children, funding concerts to insure that live music is available to a broad range of audiences and an abundance of other programs. These programs provide opportunities for a variety of groups, from students to seniors, to learn, enjoy and grow from their experiences. Additionally, PSHA has a longstanding history of sponsoring the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its community outreach programs. PSHA has made donations of over $23 million to support music programs that have enriched countless lives and have brought a lasting legacy to the community.

Music Mobile ™ Since 1971, the Music Mobile program has introduced third grade students to symphonic music and orchestral instruments. During the 2017-2018 academic year over 2,200 students in over 30 schools in Arcadia, Altadena, Monrovia, La Canada Flintridge, Pasadena, Rosemead, San Marino, Duarte and Sierra Madre learned to hold and play the instruments. Presented in partnership with the Pasadena Conservatory of Music, Music Mobile teaches students about the different instrument families—Strings, Woodwinds, Brass and Percussion—and gives them hands-on experience in how to produce sound from each instrument and how the instruments are used in an orchestra. The Music Mobile program has received awards in the areas of originality and educational excellence. PSHA members who assist with the presentations particularly enjoy the elated expressions of the students when they are able to elicit a sound from one of the instruments. For many, this is their first time being up-close to instruments of this type. And, in a child’s all too familiar world of “do not touch,” this is an extraordinary exception when they are encouraged to explore and be curious. Music Mobile is funded by the annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Yolonda Hamilton Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile Chair A generous donation from the Wells Fargo Foundation helped to fund this program.

Youth Concert The annual Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert was presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra on December 6, 2017 at the awe-inspiring Walt Disney Concert Hall to approximately 4,000 fourth grade students from the San Gabriel Valley. The Youth Concert, in addition to introducing students to orchestral concerts, is designed to weave educational concepts into an appealing storyline with theatrical elements suitable for nine year olds. This year, The Firebird Suite, composed by Igor Stravinsky, thrilled the students. The Firebird Suite was based on a Russian Fourth grade students arriving for the Youth Concert

folktale about a magical bird and was commissioned as a ballet.

Costumed ballet dancers, who created dramatic excitement to support the story and highlight the music, enhanced the production. The Firebird Suite tells of the downfall of an evil and powerful ogre through the intervention of an exquisite and enchanting bird. Princesses are taken captive, Prince Ivan, the protagonist, falls in love and all the elements of a monumental superhero clash are set in motion. Naturally, with the Firebird’s help, the ogre is destroyed, the princesses are freed and true love prevails. For many children, this event is the ďŹ rst time they have ever attended a concert with a live orchestra. For most, the Youth Concert is an unforgettable experience that impacts them in a profound and positive way creating impetus for many more meaningful experiences with music. Cora Handayan Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert Chair The Green Foundation is proud to support Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts

The History

Published in the Architectural Record July – December 1915.

H

igh atop a hill in Altadena, this elegant Mediterranean-styled estate is known as “Overlook”, doubtlessly inspired by the original view that

extended all the way to Catalina Island. The house must have been a landmark, with an unspoiled mountain backdrop. There were no other houses visible to the north until the Porter (later Gillette) hunting lodge on Palm Street. The villa was constructed in 1915 at a cost of $14,000.

The Original Owners In 1914, two sisters who were widows, Ruth E. (Scarritt) Hargrove and Mary Emma Baker, purchased five and a half acres in the sparsely settled northeast section of the community. Ruth Hargrove was the second wife of Robert Kennon Hargrove, Southern U.S. Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. After her husband died in 1905, Mrs. Hargrove moved to California. Mary Emma Baker was the widow of George L. Baker who managed theaters in Portland, Oregon. After his death, she became a teacher with the Los Angeles School System.

The Community of Altadena At that time, Altadena was a rural, unincorporated retreat for retired Easterners and businessmen who worked in Pasadena and Los Angeles. Small orchards, poultry farms and vineyards dominated the west end of town, while open ranch lands still occupied the eastern side. The rustic surroundings of Altadena attracted a number of artists and writers. Eminent American author, Zane Grey, was an early Altadena resident. 28 This page is sponsored by Fran & Dan Biles.

The Architect Reginald Davis Johnson was born in Westchester, New York in 1882 and moved to Pasadena when his father, Episcopal Bishop Joseph Horsfall Johnson, was called to head the Los Angeles Episcopal Diocese in 1894. He graduated from Williams College in 1908, studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and traveled extensively through Europe. Ruth and Mary Emma hired the up-and-coming young architect to design a villa in the Mediterranean style—an unusual choice in the Craftsman era and region.

The Mediterranean Style of the House No one knows who designed the first Mediterranean house in Southern California; but Johnson is commonly considered one of the style’s early advocates. He said it was a perfect marriage of the English charm with the climate, topography and “romance” of California. Many of his large houses and structures still stand in Altadena and Pasadena, including All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena. His work in Santa Barbara includes several landmarks, including The Santa Barbara Biltmore Hotel, La Valencia Hotel in La Jolla and the Santa Barbara Post Office. The original floor plan had various rooms around a large entrance hall. There was a living room, screened porch, dining room, kitchen, pantry, maid’s room, and one and one-half baths downstairs, as well as four bedrooms and three baths upstairs. Later owners made extensive renovations to the house, including adding Italianinfluenced details. By 1926, the main house had grown in size and a duplex residence, probably for the servants, and a garage with chauffeur’s quarters were also added. Today, the main house is over 11,000 square feet. Renovations began anew before the estate was presented as the 2002 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Subsequent owners have added contemporary elements to suit their personal taste and lifestyle, making it an eclectic blend of unique living spaces. Altadena today still maintains a casual and country feeling. This pleasant and unique community is no doubt what Zane Grey referred to when he wrote, “In Altadena I have found the qualities that make life worth living.”

he best of lavish English estate gardens seems to unfold as a series of separate and distinct “rooms.” Moving through a collection of unique topiary forms and cutting gardens emitting a sweet aroma, while viewing fountains architecturally framed by boxwood, one can experience a sense of tranquility. Garden elements, which can include the abundance of color, lush greenery and the sound of water, often combine to create sensory overload. The Gazebo Garden is imagined as a private retreat for reflection, a place of celebration or perhaps even a romantic dinner for two. For resources please see page 84.

Inspired by vintage horse-drawn traveling caravan wagons, this romantic retreat is adorned with fabulous hand-painting of opulent Old World ornament, mandalas and lush, oversized florals. A stained glass Dutch door, lace, and beaded veils allow a sliver of a glimpse inside, inviting and intriguing the imagination. A rooftop lookout draped in lavish, embellished textiles affords a vista of the gardens. Below, painted furnishings and whimsical accoutrements offer an enchanting escape for lounging, music and dance… or perhaps the seduction of having your fortune told! othing can take your breath away like a magnificent entry way. With a focus on timeless design and a touch of grandeur, these styles are seamlessly brought together in a modern way. The floor is a classic black and white design in a large geometric pattern to create an atmosphere that just says: “elegance lives here.” Bold pops of color are introduced into the space in the form of fabric, art and accessories. The English green velvet stools add a sophisticated contrast of color against the rich wood of the table and floors, while the commissioned modern art pieces complete the space in both color and style and draw your eye toward the never-ending ceiling.

nspired by the beautiful outdoor gardens, which are the ďŹ rst thing to catch the eye through the arched window, warm colors in dark brown, plum and violet that complement the green tones of nature, were immediately envisioned. Billiard Room

nspired by the thought of a group of rooms that would ow and work together as the perfect entertainer’s space, we designed the Billiard Room, Living Room and Petite Lounge to accommodate a large gathering comfortably, with ample seating and mixed functionality. The wallpaper on the ceiling of the Billiard Room is a dramatic backdrop for the undulating brass chandelier. Our custom, contemporary billiard table also has artistic inclinations and brass details. Twin niches flanking the doorway present custom drink ledges in a new porcelain product that emulates marble, with dramatic corbels. Our counter stools in brass and leather offer relaxation during the billiards game, for drinks within easy reach. Dramatic art also adds to the distinct, artistic vibe of the room, which creates a lasting impression of its welcoming mood. For resources please see page 84.

nspiration for the Petite Lounge evolved as we considered the architectural details of this European home and the Parisian influence of our adjacent Living Room design. The Petite Lounge was formerly a small atrium; but, it seemed much better suited to offer a cool, jazzy, privateclub vibe to competitors as they play pool in our adjacent Billiard Room. The built-in bar is flanked with black tile, with a brass inset of a contemporary Arabesque pattern. The bar itself has an antique mirror backdrop for glass and brass shelving over a black granite countertop. Our freestanding bar of white porcelain slabs, replicated to mimic marble veining, is our original design and floats in the center of the room. Dramatic window treatments are front and center, with glitzy sheers and panels with a bold gold and silver pattern. For resources please see page 85.

ur vision for the crown jewel of this Showcase House, the Living Room, is to create an upscale, chic, dramatic, urban space—perfect for a quiet evening of relaxation or a posh gathering with friends. We hope that guests gasp when they see the dramatic floor to ceiling sheer panels that overlay the smoky paint color, designed to create a splendid, ethereal mood. To emphasize the European architecture of the home, the ceiling and its intricate face and crown molding are painted a subtle, metallic gold to create the Parisian feel of a grand salon, complemented by the soft tones of a piano. Elegant seating vignettes were carefully chosen with interesting, artistic details, but also for practical purpose and comfort, to create such an emotional response in guests that they won’t want to leave! odern elegance fuses seamlessly with Hollywood glamour in this foyer-adjacent Powder Room. A satin brass border accents sophisticated black marble flooring. White marble tile, some accented with geometric brass inlays, covers the feature wall, while on other walls white abstract stitching accentuates the black linen fabric. Glass and aged bronze sconces and a pendant add light and warmth. This small space blends timeless appeal with a contemporary style. No home is complete without a canine companion. Across the hall, a tailormade area provides a place for Mo, a special resident of the estate, to put his paws up. Fitted with a comfy bed and favorite toys, and decorated with a hand-painted mural, it’s obviously the elite suite for a beloved family member.

e envisioned the Mezzanine as more than a hallway, but instead as a place at the home’s center where one could sit, contemplate and study. Inspiration for the textured and rich color palette was born from the ocean. The cool teal of the water, the soft neutrals of the sand and the charcoal of the rocky coastline play nicely with the warm wood found in the palms that line the American Riviera. Rich ďŹ nishes of rare burled wood, polished brass, sumptuous mohair, soft Alpaca and Tibetan Lamb are presented against a backdrop of soft eggshell plaster. The mix of design periods represents the classic, transitional, mid-century and contemporary genres. Modern art is juxtaposed with the Italian architecture and directly relates to Pasadena’s vibrant tech industry. For resources please see page 86.

Au Pair Suite

hile respecting the elegant architecture throughout the home, the Au Pair Suite was designed to be unique, fun and inviting for its young resident. Some glamour was added by the use of gold ďŹ nishes and art. Whimsy comes from the bright patterned fabrics and more subtle fabric selections were made to provide a sense of softness and comfort. The collection of furniture and accessories contributes to the youthful ambiance and eclectic charm of the room. White, gold and soft gray give a timeless aesthetic to the bath, but the undulating pattern of the tile provides texture and interest. A home away from home, which is both cozy and beautiful, makes this an appealing retreat for the au pair.

Laundry Room

he design of the Laundry Room was created to bring warmth, sophistication and liveliness, with a touch of modern wit, to the space. Influenced by the Golden State, the designer wanted to accentuate its beauty and charm through sunny undertones and a rich palette. All the artwork represents areas within and surrounding the “crown of the valley.” When sun streams through the window, the Roman shade glistens of gold, brightening the sisal on paper grasscloth on the ceiling. Suspended above is a chandelier made of handblown glass bulbs, varying in color and shape. This artisanal light fixture, chosen for its resemblance to soap suds, casts a constellation of light over the vibrant coral walls. Although meant for a tedious chore, this chic Laundry Room may bring a sense of ease and pleasure to a necessary task. For resources please see page 90.

ontemporary interior design exudes cutting-edge style in the Back Staircase & Hall, adjacent to the kitchen. Lustrous wallcoverings play as a backdrop to brass studded hardware accents across the walls and ceilings. These accents are threedimensional, cylindrical in shape, and transform the space into a sculptural work of art—a truly bespoke design. Not only are the brass hardware accents decorative, but they are functional where one may hang a coat, bag, or umbrella. Chandeliers made from brass, concrete and glass introduce new light into the staircase and hallways spaces. To adorn the design, ďŹ ne works of art furnish vacant walls to offer a gallery feel. he design concept for the Olive Court showcases the existing majestic old tree. A meandering stream arcs around the tree, setting the stage for a lushly planted backdrop. A water feature enlivens the space with both sound and movement: a rock waterfall establishes the stream source, and groupings of boulders, with water spilling and bubbling, create a soothing, contemplative atmosphere. Travertine squares laced with grass strips stylistically connect garden to house, inviting the visitor with a tantalizing look and feel they will want to experience underfoot. Aligned with the kitchen wall, the travertine squares become diagonal at the dining room wall, creating a pattern with energy and interest. hat better way to enjoy true Southern California alfresco dining than preparing your gourmet meals in this wonderful Outdoor Kitchen? Start off with a homemade Neapolitan pizza in the Italian style gas pizza oven, while preparing your steak with a quick sear on the 42” gourmet grill. Serve your guests a refreshing drink from the deluxe refreshment center complete with a commercial outdoor refrigerator and icemaker. Should the temperatures be on the warm side, simply adjust the awning to customize your comfort level. This wonderful kitchen will transform any pool or patio into a chef’s delight and an entertainer’s paradise. Bon Appétit! For resources please see page 92.

T

he inspiration for the Chef’s Garden is derived from experience in building and viewing countless gardens. With the focus on cooking and gardening, the highlights are the colorful raised planting beds and the cozy seating areas. Using metal, wood and pottery, the planting beds and workspaces are incorporated into a comfortable and efďŹ cient home garden. Workspaces have been individually designed and built using recycled materials. The planters, watered by an automatic system, are placed with regard to the available sunshine, and contain only organic materials. They are planted with everything a gourmet cook might need, including unusual Japanese vegetables and herbs grown from seed. Potted fruit trees are placed throughout the garden. A place to relax and enjoy a meal with family and friends is also an important part of the design. For resources please see page 93.

he Guest House Garden artfully blends classic and contemporary design to create a chic entry to the Guest House and a secluded place for visitors to relax. Featuring aromatic, silver-hued foliage against clipped greens and spilling out over gravel pathways, it bears the hallmarks of a traditional Mediterranean garden, but with an innovative twist. Custom pavers and outdoor furniture have strong, contemporary lines and echo the home’s exterior monochromatic color scheme, while smaller decorative elements provide warmth via rich textures and sun-kissed colors. On the veranda, sleek, high-gloss pots with dramatic, boldly textured plantings frame the entry and are a playful foil to the Guest House’s ornate architectural details. Together, these elements contribute to a space that feels glamorous, assured, relaxed, warm and modern—one that welcomes guests and invites them to linger. For resources please see page 93.

T

he dramatic Guest House Kitchen is an open-concept, contemporary space that was influenced by Scandinavian design. Matte black cabinetry is combined with an artistic three-dimensional tile backsplash. Iron shelving is suspended to allow for extra storage. Sitting atop a 10” toe kick, the natural wood island feels as though it’s floating. Wood and copper finishes are used as accents throughout, giving the space a harmonious feeling. The appliances are seamlessly integrated into the cabinetry to maintain clean lines. The new custom architectural glass door makes a grand statement and provides privacy for the bedroom. Wide plank European oak floors complement the concrete fireplace. The custom live edge coffee table is both a sculptural, yet functional, piece and accentuates the mix of patterns. With the sleek, yet comfortable, furnishings, you will definitely want to grab a blanket and a drink to cozy up. For resources please see page 93.

he Guest House Bedroom is both chic and comfortable, the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the comforts of home. The masonry effect on the light grey and white wallpaper acts as the perfect backdrop for the custom king size bed. A plum velvet bed frame is the main focal point of this room and the bed itself, with crisp white bed linens and framed by two glass and iron bedside tables and wall sconces is calling for relaxation. A playful feel results from the funky black and white bench at the footboard of the bed, the unique chandelier and the mix of patterns throughout the space. Custom iron doors are adorned with patterned drapery for privacy but provide an open concept framework from the bedroom to the living room.

For resources please see page 93.

I

n the newly enlarged bathroom a three-dimensional porcelain tile is paired with a copper liner running horizontally throughout the bathroom walls. The tile is installed vertically to accentuate the height of the ceiling and give a grander appearance to the space. With a unique approach to a shower enclosure, individual panels were used to create a water barrier but still allow for an open feel to the space. The custom plum vanity was designed to look like furniture, adding warmth as well as a splash of color to the modern grey and white tile. The suspended iron and glass shelves tie into the metalwork that can be found throughout the Guest House. The mix of pattern, color and texture throughout the two spaces creates a fun and playful room. For resources please see page 93.

Become a Member Love Showcase? Consider Becoming a Member Most members of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) volunteer because of a deep desire to help provide funding for the arts. Like all community service, the real benefits are intangible but deeply gratifying. Design and architecture aficionados are attracted to PSHA because they enjoy observing the renovation of an estate for the Pasadena Showcase House of Design and the opportunity to learn about new design products and concepts. However, it is important to note that the majority of PSHA positions are not related to design. Others are drawn to PSHA because of their belief that music programs need to be championed in the competitive arena of philanthropic funding and that such programs have enormous value to the individuals served and to the entire community. Most members find a camaraderie that often flourishes into life-long friendships. Many cherished memories have been made at the end of the day as members debrief and share experiences. Recently, a member was asked about the legendary commitment of PSHA members. Her response was, “It is the personal stories about how these funds impact the community, especially its children, that compel us all to roll up our sleeves and work even harder. It is an honor to be a part of this legacy.” For more information contact membership@PasadenaShowcase.org.
