Welcome to the 2020 Pasadena Showcase House of Design
Welcome to Locke House – a 1937 Federal-country estate designed by Hollywood society’s architect, Gerard R. Colcord. Situated on park-like grounds, Locke House is a 6,700 square-foot two-story family home that features six bedrooms and five bathrooms. This year we challenged our designers to demonstrate how beautiful design can be achieved in an environmentally sustainable manner and to embrace the elegance and utility of smaller home spaces as we trend towards simplifying our lives.
However, by early March we were confronted with the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting shutdown in Los Angeles County. At the time, we were at the height of construction activity on the property – down to studs and floor joists in almost half of the house – and were forced to drastically restrict on-site trades to ensure that everyone’s health and safety was protected. Although progress continued very slowly, it did so in a safe and healthy manner and was managed within all state and local health mandates. Six months later, the artfully reimagined 56th Pasadena Showcase House of Design emerged ready, sparkling and optimistic for its reveal! The design pages of the program are a true testament to the spirit of Showcase: aspirational design. And in this 56th year, more than any other year before it, Locke House reflects the strength and perseverance of our collaborative aspiration. We are immensely grateful to the extraordinary designers and craftsmen who worked tirelessly to create this exquisite Showcase House. They worked miracles throughout the pandemic and brought flair and sophistication to every inch of the property. Thank you also to our generous Sponsors, Resources, Patrons and
Vikki Sung President
Special Friends who each contributed in a myriad of ways. We are indebted to the members of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, and especially the Core Committee, who worked diligently with the designers to complete the construction and design work over the prolonged shutdown. Their dedication and resourcefulness are legendary in the community. We invite you to wander virtually through the lovely rooms and gardens at the Showcase House and hope that you will be inspired by the artistry of this year’s design teams. Although unable to safely hold an in-person tour, we are pleased to offer Ultimate Viewpoints: 56 (UV:56), which is the virtual tour of Locke House. U V:56 offers guests a 360-degree in-depth dive into each of the design areas, including designer video interviews, Dunn-Edwards color selections, the resource listing, and a designer engagement section. Whether this is your first visit or a longstanding annual one, thank you for your patronage. Your attendance has made it possible for us to contribute over $23 million in support of music programs and has brought a lasting legacy to the community. We think you’ll agree with us
Jill Fosselman Benefit Chair
that Locke House is “more than just a pretty house,” and sincerely hope that you enjoy UV:56.

A 501(c)3 California corporation founded in 1948, PSHA is an all-volunteer organization. Our volunteers work countless hours to produce the Pasadena Showcase House of Design as our annual fundraiser, through which we generate financial support for programs that benefit the community. PSHA supports a broad and diverse list of programs including musical theater, orchestra, jazz ensembles, marching bands and choral groups at local schools, as well as music therapy for at-risk children. We underwrite concerts to ensure that the joy of live music is made available to a wide range of audiences, and many other programs. This enriches the community and provides opportunities for a variety of groups – from students to seniors – to learn, enjoy and grow from their experiences in these programs. Additionally, PSHA has a longstanding history of sponsoring the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its educational and community outreach programs. PSHA has made donations of over $23 million to support music programs that have enriched countless lives and have brought a lasting legacy to the community.

Music Mobile™ Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) has had the distinct pleasure of bringing the Music Mobile™ program to third grade students in the San Gabriel Valley since 1971. This program has received numerous local and national awards for its originality and educational excellence. Beginning in 2005, PSHA partnered with the Pasadena Conservatory of Music (PCM) to expand our community outreach by inviting schools in the San Gabriel Valley to participate. We have presented the Music Mobile program to over 125,000 students. The Music Mobile™ van is filled with brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments. Students participate in a hands-on presentation of these instruments. At each presentation, colorful banners identify the various instruments and instrument groups as the PCM conductor teaches and introduces the concept of a symphony orchestra. PSHA members assist the third graders as they play the instruments. For many students, this is the first time they have touched a musical instrument. The excitement on their faces is evident when they see all the instruments and as they are allowed to handle and play them. The program serves to stimulate the students’ curiosity about music and encourages further exploration and appreciation. This year the Music Mobile™ program is sponsored by a generous grant from United Charity Foundation to bring music to the children of the San Gabriel Valley. Barbara C. Youth Concert Each year the Pasadena Showcase Youth Concert draws nearly 4,000 fourth graders from the San Gabriel Valley and beyond. This year, the very talented Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra was to have performed “Power to the People! a musical production. Due to restrictions imposed by health officials surrounding the Novel Corona Virus (COVID-19) pandemic, all spring performances at the Walt Disney Concert Hall were cancelled, including our beloved Youth Concert. We are looking forward to our next Youth Concert. Salpy Pontrelli Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert Chair

The Estate and Its History
The Locke House in 1939
Locke House, the 56th Pasadena Showcase House of Design, is a 1937 Federal-country estate designed by Hollywood’s society architect, Gerard R. Colcord. Patterned after country homes for affluent families on the east coast, the house is nestled among mature oaks and sits on expansive, park-like grounds in the historic Santa Anita Oaks neighborhood of Arcadia. The house is virtually unchanged from its original design and features refined Federal detailing throughout the trim, windows, fireplaces and hardware. It includes classical design elements such as painted brick, wood shingles, elongated windows, and a front door crowned by a Georgian-style broken pediment. The twostory home is approximately 6,700 square-feet and is still on its original two-acre parcel. It cost $30,000 to build, a very large amount of money for a new house during the Great Depression. A pool, barbecue room, bath and dressing room structure, as well as a brickfloored screened porch at the rear of the house, were added later. Locke House was featured in the 1998 Academy Award winning Monsters The house was also showcased in Architectural Digest Magazine in 1939. film, Gods and Monsters. 34 This page is sponsored by GGE Foundation
The Original Owners The house was built for Edmund Locke, Jr. who shared the house with his wife Elizabeth and their three young children. Mr. Locke purchased five lots on both sides of Rancho Road from the Home for Women in 1936 on which he would build their house. Born on March 14, 1903 in Los Angeles, he was the son of Edmund Locke, Sr., a newspaper publisher and Elizabeth (Carr) Locke. By 1920 he and his family were living in Beverly Hills where his mother was a founder of the Beverly Hills Women’s Club. Mr. Locke attended Harvard and in 1926 married Elizabeth Brown, the daughter of a developer of gold mines and oil wells. It is thought that Mr. and Mrs. Locke lived largely on money they inherited from both sides of the family. Sometime before 1950, the Lockes moved to Hawaii. Mr. Locke died June 10, 1975 at the age of 72 and Mrs. Locke outlived her husband by a few years, passing away on May 1, 1978. The Style of the House Locke House is based upon Federal-style country homes built in the eastern United States between 1776 and 1820. Named after America’s first political party, Federal-style design was derived from Greek and Roman architecture to embody the ideals of Greek democracy and the Roman Republic. Federal-style details were often much more delicate and refined and were more modest in size compared to more imposing two-story Georgian-style country houses. Homewood, a Baltimore house built in 1800 for Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, might have been the inspiration for Locke House. Decorative detail and other prominent features of Homewood appear throughout Locke House such as the brick veneer on the walls of the main center block, elongated windows at the first level and small dormers with circular head windows on the second floor. Elements of Locke House that depart from tradition include turning the two end wings at right angles to the main section of the house, utilizing wood shingles on the walls of the two end wings and crowning the front door with a Georgian-style broken pediment. The house has six bedrooms and five bathrooms. On the first floor are an entry hall, a living room, a dining room, a library, a kitchen with a butler’s pantry, a breakfast room, a laundry room, a guest suite, servant’s quarters and a screened porch. The second floor features a play room, a sewing room and four bedroom suites.
The Architect Gerard Rae Colcord, referred to as “Hollywood’s society architect” was born into a wealthy family in St. Louis, Missouri on November 1, 1900. His father was the proprietor of the Colcord-Wright Machinery and Supply Company, a dealer in metal-working machines. His mother was an artist. After graduating from the Culver Military Academy in Indiana, Mr. Colcord moved with his family to Beverly Hills and enrolled in the University of Southern California’s School of Architecture. In 1923 he traveled to Europe, touring England, Italy and France, participating in a one-year apprenticeship program at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts at Fontainebleau. It was here that he learned the skill of blending various architectural features from different historical eras in a unified design. Returning to Southern California, he apprenticed with well-known architects Asa Hudson and John C. Austin. He received his State Certificate in 1930, whereupon he established his own office in Beverly Hills. In the early 1930’s Mr. Colcord married the first of his three wives, Jeanne Marie Dumas. They were prominent on the Southern California social scene and belonged to the Bel-Air Bay club. By the end of the 1940’s Mr. Colcord had become a “brand name.” His signature “farmhouse” residences, sometimes called “Country Colonials” became very popular with well-to-do business people and celebrities such as actors Alan Ladd and Debbie Reynolds. While Mr. Colcord primarily worked for clients in Beverly Hills and the Westside of Los Angeles, he designed at least six houses in the San Gabriel Valley including Locke House. His fame also spread beyond California with clients in Georgia, Texas and Florida. His interiors were even used as inspirations for set designs for television programs, I Love Lucy, Leave It To Beaver, and Father Knows Best. Mr. Colcord designed nearly four hundred homes and completed about one hundred residential remodels. He died in Encino on February 19, 1984 at the age of 83. He had no children but was survived by his third wife, Virginia Alice Singer.

The center courtyard gardens feature a three-tiered fountain surrounded by an array of California native perennials. Verbenas, Salvias, and Penstemons combine to bring texture, color and plenty of pollinators. Small tufts of California Fescues and Yarrow hug this bed, inviting friends like the Annas Hummingbird and Checkerspot butterfly. Vibrant pink Western Redbuds create elegant, vertical focal points in the two entry beds. The shade garden in the south beds highlight Giant Chain Ferns and delicate Coral Bells. This design holds its own in beauty, sustainability, and low water making it a California native twist on a conventional cottage garden.

Entry / Foyer & Main Staircase Flourishing, rooted, serene, authentic, luxurious, elevated, alive, distinctive, and allegiant are the imageries that led me to the concept of “Natural Class. The antique circular table with its decorative meanders pays homage to the home’s Federal style. The custom console table with its curvilinear back was based on the open string on the staircase designed by the original architect. The mural, codesigned with a local artist, captures the beautiful chaos that makes the Pasadena Showcase House of Design possible each year. Everything in this space has a story full of passion and purpose, and as such, I hope to invoke in the visitor a feeling of loving energy married with beauty.

Breakfast / Morning Room
Characterizing “conspicuous consumption with a conscience,” the Breakfast Room juxtaposes the idea of sustainable design with maximalism and the element of excess, but with restraint. Finishes and products were selected with the idea of sustainability in mind but with an eye for fashion. The woven wallcovering is crafted of recycled newspaper and the ceiling features a large scale black and white hand-illustration of tree branches and magnolia buds. The wood grain of the painted white floor is highlighted with black for definition. Vintage, recycled luxury goods shopping bags and boxes were deconstructed and upcycled into meticulously embroidered and embellished works of art. Each piece of furniture is custom designed, including the colorful glass light fixture and glass curtain, both of which were commissioned in Murano, Italy, and the grasscloth wrapped breakfast table. Three-dimensional embroidered butterflies on the ceiling bring attention to the often overlooked “fifth-wall”. Although small, the Breakfast Room is an adorned jewel box that sparks conversation and makes a lasting impression.

Dining Room Ammie’s trip to Barbizon, France, sparked the inspiration for the dining room. While traveling through the north of central France, Ammie discovered the impact of pure, natural scenery. Upon entering the dining room, you are greeted with a hand-painted scenic mural depicting a tranquil European landscape. This French traditional dining room features various hints of Asian culture. Objects wrapped in organza fabric, a Korean tradition known as Bojagi, are displayed atop the dinnerware. A French colonial, Indo-Chinese dining table adds a unique quality to the room.

Mighty Mudroom with Pet Spa For busy families juggling kids, gear, and pets, this is the true ‘entrance’ of the house. We unload and unwind at our backdoors far more than we do at our front ones. This room’s location, off the garage and next to the kitchen, is ideal for a mudroom. And a laundry. And a pet bath. We thought to combine all three. A wider, double door entry gives more immediate access to a pet-cleaning, clutter-containing, high-functioning destination with French Provincial character. This re-imagined space features two-tone cabinetry, quartz counters, an apron front, concrete sink, a mudroom bench, a full-sized washer/dryer, a steam closet and, of course, a pet bath station.

Millennial Suite
Lounging and listening to music was how we saw the Millennial Suite being used. We created a space with rich hues and a lot of textural elements. Combining our love of Art Deco and modern styles, the room’s design is current with the technologies of today, while also being environmentally conscious. A few pieces in the room have been recycled or reclaimed, and the mural wallpaper is made without harsh VOCs. Younger generations and baby boomers alike will appreciate the motorized window shades and lighting that can be controlled by a smartphone or voice-activation. The bathroom combines high style with considerations to keep the space accessible — the floor is slip resistant and safety is a high priority with appropriately placed grab bars.

Young Explorer’s Room
We designed this room as a haven for a fictional thirteen year old boy who might have been a character in Wes Anderson’s “Moonrise Kingdom”. He’s a curious boy who loves science, plants, and animals and who could be a boy scout. We wanted to embrace the aesthetic of “Moonrise Kingdom” by adding some whimsy and oddity to the room — notably the atmospheric cloud wallpaper, some quirky plants, boy scout memorabilia, a small collection of vintage items, paper mâché taxidermy and some unique books. Everything is meant to serve the narrative of an odd but wonderful young boy who is a creative thinker and who surrounds himself with nature. The sum of these curated design elements is a bedroom that provides a haven for creativity, reflection, and discovery — a reminder of the fresh air and the creatures outside; an ideal place in which to grow up.

Jack & Jill Bathroom The striking look of existing molding became the inspiration for the new design scheme for this bathroom. The unique molding pattern around the archways inspired us to play with contoured shapes, which in turn gave us the idea to create a geometric pattern on the floor. The nook houses a freestanding bathtub and elegant chandelier that adds to the mood of relaxation when you enter. The bold blue velvet drapery catches your eye as the natural light cascades upward drawing your attention to the 3D tile placed on the ceiling that just takes your breath away.

Sophisticated Girl’s Room Our Sophisticated Girl’s Room is modern and elegant but not too serious. Inspired by the minty greens that are trending on the runway and in design, we wanted to keep the space youthful, but timeless, with references to Art Deco, such as the arched headboard, and fun Bohemian elements like the bullion fringe. The fabrics are a mix of luxe velvet, silks and classic linens in deep teals, mint green and a splash of bold yellow accents. The look is completed with whimsical art and modern furniture but mixed with antique pieces to complement the architecture of the home. Our adjoining closet is painted in a rich teal with bronze accents and statement light fixtures.

Primar y Bedroom The Primary Suite embraces the glory days of the 1930’s when the beautification of the city of Arcadia meant planting trees along parkways, golf courses and bowling greens and which inspired the different hues of green and botanical patterns seen throughout the room. The original racetrack layout in the grand Primary Suite Closet and Bath was maintained in the updated layout, as were the Federal Colonial details with which Architect Gerard R. Colcord generously trimmed the home. The marriage of the era’s grandiosity with the simplicity, functionality, and flow of an aspired modern-day lifestyle was achieved by opening walls, reorganizing the layout, improving lighting, and incorporating modern technological conveniences into the design of the space. The resulting Primary Suite is a relaxing confection of both male and female energy, blending classic with “the now” for a lifestyle meant to be savored.

Family Room
The design for the family room was inspired by the home’s Colonial façade but done with a modern classic take. We wanted to create a space that exudes warmth and comfort, but sharpened with modern details. Using rectangular shapes to emphasize the Colonial style, we layered custom gold trim onto existing wood panels painted in a rich navy blue. The ceiling follows this theme with rectangular motifs infilled with gold marbled wallpaper, creating a fascinating dimensional overhead detail. To infuse grandeur and sophistication in the room, we used reflective materials, such as metallic wallpaper, high-sheen drapery and accessories with shiny surfaces to further add excitement.

Brightly lit with bold contrasts, this Office Suite features an updated bathroom, shared with the family room, and boldly painted built-ins. The French door provides immediate access to the private loggia. A comfortable loveseat was revived with a fresh and plush recovering. The curtains are luxurious and bejeweled, and the accessories are a combination of new and a nod to the past. The bathroom received new flooring so we could bring in a truly stunning vanity, but we preserved vintage tile for a marriage of new and old.

Pool Designing a space that would be versatile for guests to enjoy, whatever the season, was at the forefront of our objective for the pool. The result is a warm and inviting entertainment space around the pool house. A luxury spa was installed to make the pool more inviting and relaxing. The natural red brick showcased in the spa and water feature ties together the home and spa. The pool deck is constructed from tumbled paving stones, which combine elegance with outstanding durability. By terracing the landscape, the pool connects seamlessly with the house, creating one cohesive space. Ceramic succulent bowls with drought-tolerant plants adorn the pool and bring life and energy to the outdoor space.

Rock Stars of the Year Putting on a Showhouse takes more than a village – it's more like a metropolitan city! And during this unprecedented pandemic, we never would have completed the 56th Pasadena Showcase House of Design without serious boots-on-the-ground. Between March and September, these women worked countless days and long hours at the house so that work could safely progress. On the behalf of the organization, Jill and Vikki would like to extend a very special thank you to the following members for their hard work, dedication, flexibility, daily kindness, grace, and strong spirit.
