his year we celebrate the Golden Anniversary of the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. This is a significant milestone for Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA), which marked its 65th Anniversary last fall. An idea that began 50 years ago has resulted in our Showcase being one of the largest and oldest continuously running house and garden tours in the nation. This is quite a remarkable feat for our all-volunteer organization and something for which we are very proud. For the past 50 years Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts has featured many architecturally significant homes. We commemorate our 50th year by presenting a 1915 English Arts and Crafts estate designed by Stiles O. Clements. The home sits amid 3.5 wooded acres. The property includes a carriage house, greenhouse, slat house, pool, pool dressing rooms, outdoor kitchen, aviary and a river-rock artesian spring house. We invite you to enjoy a meal in Table 50, our Restaurant at Showcase, or toast your favorite Showcase memory in Pub 50. Our Shops at Showcase offer some enticing finds. To commemorate our 50th Anniversary our organization published a coffee table book featuring 50 Years of Pasadena Showcase Design Houses: Supporting the Arts Through Design. This book includes a history of all 50 Showcase Houses and provides a retrospective of interior design throughout the past fifty years. Please visit the booth where our 50th Anniversary book will be available for purchase. Our longstanding tradition of excellence is a tribute to the talent and hard work of the many designers, patrons, special friends, resource personnel and our members who have dedicated themselves to our fundraising efforts. To date we have donated in excess of $19 million allowing PSHA to be a major donor to the Los Angeles Philharmonic, a donor to Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl, and to benefit schools and other non-profit organizations in support of symphonic music, music education and related programs. Showcase proceeds also fund PSHA’s own programs: the award-winning Music Mobile™, the Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert and the Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition for young musicians. Your support of our goals has brought beauty and the joy of music into the hearts of many. A sincere thank you to our homeowner who graciously opened this estate for our annual benefit. We are grateful to the city of Pasadena and the neighbors for their support. We thank you for visiting and wish you a magnificent day of discovery and beauty.

Founded in 1948, they adopted the Pasadena Showcase House of Design as their annual benefit in 1965. It is one of the oldest, largest and most successful house and garden tours in the nation. The members of PSHA are united in their belief in the power and beauty of music. Music Mobile

50th annual pasadena showcase house of design

pasadena showcase house music mobile ™ Dear Music Mobile™ Teachers, Thank you for bringing the instruments to our school. I had lots of fun. I enjoyed playing the instruments because I never tried them before. I didn’t know there was an instrument called a clarinet. I learned the violin bow was made out of horse hair. The small instrument sound is high. The big instrument sound is low. My favorite activity was the violin because it has a nice sound. Thank you for the C.D. that is called “Peter and the Wolf.” I hope you come back for next year’s third graders. his thank you letter expresses the wonder and joy many of the third grade students experience when they attend one of our Music Mobile™ assemblies, which in its 43-year history, has delighted nearly 122,000 children in San Gabriel Valley elementary schools. At each assembly, the students learn how orchestral instruments sound, what makes them unique, and have an opportunity to play them in the “orchestra.” Each child also receives a gift C.D. containing the music of Peter and the Wolf, The Story of Babar the Little Elephant, and A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, which is the piece they hear during the assembly. This award-winning program, initiated in 1971, was designed, implemented and originally staffed entirely by PSHA members. Since 2005, PSHA has partnered with the Pasadena Conservatory of Music (PCM), who provides the conductor and all the instruments: strings, brass, percussion and woodwind, while PSHA makes volunteers available to assist PCM and the students at the assemblies. It is a very rewarding experience for everyone involved. Music Mobile™ is funded by PSHA, a generous donation from the Wells Fargo Foundation, and with your help by visiting our 50th Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Youth Concert 50th annual pasadena showcase house of design

pasadena showcase house youth concert

Imagine you’re nine years old, barely able to stay seated on an orange school bus parked on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles. All around you kids and teachers are buzzing with excitement – will there be a tuba? And how many violins are in a symphony? As you quickly step toward the curb, you’re greeted by the towering, undulating waves of the concert hall – crisp, and illuminated by the early morning sunlight. The waves overtake you as you enter the hall, feeling like you’ve slipped into the clear ocean deep. The doors part and you feel that you’ve entered the hold of a ship, and there at the bottom, just in front of you, are the musicians. Oh! And the beautiful instruments! As the conductor raises his baton, you gather your breath in anticipation and know you’ve arrived at a very special place.

s the mother of an attending 4th grader, I was incredibly proud to Chair the 60th Annual Youth Concert that was held this past October at Los Angeles’ remarkable architectural icon, Walt Disney Concert Hall. Over 4,000 students from 52 schools were mesmerized by the performance of Wing on Wing – a composition inspired by the Hall, written by Conductor Laureate, Esa-Pekka Salonen, while he was Music Director. The world-class Los Angeles Philharmonic transported the students into a composer’s imagination through Wing on Wing – a vision of water, fish, storms and ships. The 60th Annual Youth Concert was made possible through proceeds from the Pasadena Showcase House of Design and a generous donation from The Green Foundation. Throughout the 60 years of the Youth Concert, PSHA has hosted over 300,000 fourthgraders at the Youth Concert. Over our 10-year partnership with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, 40,000 kids in the past ten years alone were treated to a world-class symphonic concert in the iconic Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall. Overview of the Estate 50th annual pasadena showcase house of design

John Allen Swede, photographer 1973

the architect tiles O. Clements (1883-1966), who designed this year’s estate, was a prominent Southern California architect for fifty years. He was born in Maryland, studied architecture at the Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, and took further studies at L’ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He came to Los Angeles in 1911, working first Stiles O. Clements and his horse Sage Brush with architect Robert Farquhar, then with the Frank Meline development company. Clements joined the Los Angeles office of Morgan, Walls & Morgan as a designer in 1917. In 1923, he became a partner in the firm whose name was changed to Morgan, Walls & Clements. Clements opened his own firm, Stiles O. Clements and Associates, in 1937 after the closure of Morgan Walls & Clements. In 1955, he formed Clements & Clements, a partnership with his son Robert. He lived in Beverly Hills and was active in the Stock Exchange Club, the Bel-Air Bay Club, and the Guild Opera Company. Clements was a key figure in the 1920s Art Deco movement and in the 1930s Streamline Modern style. Among his notable buildings are: The Adamson House in Malibu, the Richfield Oil Building in downtown Los Angeles, the Owl Drug Store/ Julian Medical building in Hollywood, the Swim Gym at Beverly Hills High School (featured in It’s A Wonderful Life), the Hollywood Park racetrack, Jefferson High School, the El Capitan Theatre, Wiltern Theater and the Mayan Theater. Clements also designed in historicist motifs and revivalism styles, such the Spanish revival Adamson House in Malibu and the Mesopotamian revival Sampson Tire & Rubber Company (now the Citadel). Will Rogers and A.P. Giannini were among his clients.

location The estate is located in the South Grand-Covington area of Pasadena. It is a contributing structure to a pending Landmark District designation by the City.

the house This English country estate sits on 3.5 wooded acres and features a terraced rose garden, pool, bathhouse, river rock spring house, tennis and badminton courts, a greenhouse, gardener’s potting shed and a pond. It has seven bedrooms, ten baths, five fireplaces, oak floors, redwood wall paneling and floor to ceiling leaded glass windows. Above the carriage house there is a one-bedroom chauffeur’s suite complete with a sitting room and kitchenette. In 1915, the cost to build the house and garage was $28,000.

the owners Robert Philip Flint and his wife Margaret were the first owners of the estate. Mr. Flint was born in Minnesota, graduated from Yale University and studied at the Colorado School of Mines. He came to Los Angeles with his family in 1900 and is listed in a 1910 census as the manufacturer of carbonic acid and oxygen gas. The Flints sold the estate to James and Susan Everding in 1925. Mr. Everding was in the real estate business. Mrs. Everding lived in the house until 1942 when she sold it to Philip and Alberta Chandler. Mr. Chandler was the son of the Los Angeles Times publisher, Harry Chandler. He was the general manager and executive vice president of Times Mirror. He passed away in 1968. His widow sold the estate to John and Lillian Fulmer in 1972. Mr. Fulmer was president of the John M. Fulmer Company, a manufacturer of children’s, women’s, and maternity clothing. The current homeowners purchased the estate in 2012.

T

he Garden of Prosperity is essentially an entry garden comprised of elegant walls, steps, walkway and plantings along the front facade of the home. Instead of ordinary foundation plantings, the garden is designed with a strong three-dimensional quality to serve as a welcoming arrival space and a transition between the larger landscape and the home’s interior. This spatial quality emphasizes the importance of place-making rather than mere decoration. The entry walls, steps and brick-inlaid walkway are entirely new but have been given an aged finish to match the historical nature of the home. Lighting has been incorporated unobtrusively and with restraint to maintain a proper level of sophistication. Plantings are bold and simple to enhance the beauty of the facade and to strengthen the arrival experience.

T

he Entry Hall, with its scale and paneling, along with the house’s exterior architecture, inspired the look of a country house entry, staircase, and upstairs gallery. The paneling and balusters have been neutralized to a bone color, with shaded architectural details painted on the doors and surrounds. The walls have been glazed a dark brown to serve as a dramatic backdrop for art, which is illuminated by contemporary cable lighting. Along with the hall table, the 18th century chairs and 19th century tall case clock create a sense of permanence. The area rug is contemporary, but with an old-world feel. The designers selected the dark brown sisal stair runner for both its look and its durability. A touch of whimsey has been added on the porch with a custom dog house, designed to resemble a sentry box outside Buckingham Palace. The artwork was commissioned specially for the Showcase House space.

he Powder room is a fresh and sophisticated jewel box. The vintage star medallion original to the house, welcomes you as you enter the room. The bold color palette of orange, green and gold accents set the tone of the powder room with layers of opulent textures and distinct patterns that convey a vintage, contemporary and traditional glamour to the room. To make the powder room appear larger we created pony walls encased with metal vintage gold accent panels that will separate the vestibule and toilet room. Antique mirror will be added to the vestibule wall to give a lite and airy feeling to the space. The craftsman style wainscot with handcrafted 24 x 24 tiles with a retro design inlayed onto Jerusalem gold stone with a green accent color that will embellish the walls throughout the 2 spaces. The green velvet wall color with an underlay of gold, will add a touch of shimmer with a dramatic and stylish appearance that will be timeless.

he Salon is a large, Old Englishinspired living room with dark wood paneling and dismal

lighting. The inspiration is to transform this room into a bright contemporary space and to create a sense of elegance with a dash of glamour. The beautiful paneling will have a gleaming, white finish and be softly upholstered. The color palette combines soothing whites, creams, taupes and beiges, but is punctuated with the metallics of bronze, silver and soft golds. Accent colors of pale blues and tangerine are added for unexpected pops of color. The furniture blends the old with the new, traditional English with the modern Chinese and pillow fabrics range from soft

and comforting to bold and graphic. The drapery is flowing and elegant. Sisal area rug covers the entire floor, however two large woven rugs on each end of the room serve to create three individual “suites within The Salon.

T

he English Arts and Crafts architecture of the house set the tone for the design of the Great Room. The large comfortable room is designed in a more casual way for an easy place to entertain small or large groups. The two seating areas are the perfect setting for conversation or for watching television, playing games and eating. The dark wood flooring is a nice contrast to the warm cream color painted on the paneled walls and trim. The tongue and groove ceiling and bookcases are accented with a rich green. The large beams have a simple arts and crafts design stenciled on the bottom and a similar design has been painted on the center wall panels around the room. The color palate of creams, greens and reds in the upholstery and roman shades as well as the grass cloth wall covering and woven shades add texture and a sense of warmth to the space. The custom area

rugs made of cotton, wool and jute provide another layer of texture. And the large custom iron chandeliers provide ample lighting. The impressively large wood mantle has remained but the brick surround and hearth has been replaced with a beautiful handmade tile in the same rich green tones seen in the fabrics and paint. A wet bar has been added and stained the same color as the beams. The mix of wood and handmade tiles on the counter are complemented with a beautiful glass vessel sink in the same color tones. Complete with an icemaker, wine and beverage refrigerator this bar is an excellent entertaining must have.

The designers selected it for both its look and its durability. Subtle shadowing was added to the newel posts and balustrade, and the gold trim line continues around the upstairs windows and trims. nspired by human need to reenergize, the Arabesque pattern in the master suite suggests the infinite, and is our keystone. Awash in platinum, grey, cream and aquamarine, the suite is a provocative blend of classic and new, in a comfortable setting of sumptuousness, romance and glamour. Fully absorb the detail and drama of each of the suite’s three areas. The walkin closet features dramatic fretwork in a pearlized grey finish, with antique mirrors. Enter the master bath, to be greeted by a cohesive blend of exclusive tile patterns – a foil for the Picasso tub which is flanked by a backdrop of stunning window treatments. Lastly, one will want to explore the sleeping area; our favorite view is unique draping over a stunning bed, adorned with dazzling bedding. The original fireplace was resurfaced in a moody marble called ‘Winter Cloud’, inspiration in itself. Exquisite seating and window treatments are our specialty, all custom designed for the space, which create an intimate setting with fine details.

riginally the upstairs linen closet, the space is now transformed into the Laundry Room. Naturally inspired by two simple, timeless attributes fresh and clean. Classic shades of white have been utilized on permanent surfaces including Calcutta marble, ceramic tile and cabinets giving depth and richness to this space. Striving for a more contemporary design, highlighted by a streamline approach evident in the apron sink, faucet, and lighting. The room is equipped with a drying rack, drawer mounted ironing board, hanging wardrobe rod, built-in hamper and open shelving for storage with easy access, emphasizing functionality. Caesarstone quartz was used for the countertop for its durability. The floor, painted yellow adds a burst of energy and cheer to the room. All of these elements makes doing the laundry a pleasurable experience.

Young Woman’s Suite 50th annual pasadena showcase house of design

T

he design of The Young Woman’s Suite is for a twentysomething year-old woman, and consists of a bedroom with adjoining bathroom. With windows overlooking the three-acre back yard, there are views from almost every wall. The theme of the space is serenity. The décor is meant to evoke a sense of calm, relaxation and peace. The color palate consists of soft baby blue, muted mint green, and white: all clean, crisp, mild and light. Here, I imagine the young woman is able to be herself and dream about her future. In the bedroom, I have created a custom upholstered headboard, chaise lounge and desk chair. I have also designed custom

wood furnishings for the room: a pair of matching nightstands, dresser and desk. Traditional in form, the furnishings in the room are soft, comfortable, useful and beautiful. The goal is to evoke the feeling of floating away into the sky overlooking the gardens. The bathroom style is a play on the traditional, blending it with a current sensibility. The floor is tiled in a stunning floral pattern, which consists of light blue, grey and white marble tile. The bay window acts as a frame for the freefloating tub, the centerpiece of the space. My goal with this bathroom and bedroom is to make the suite so serene and beautiful, the young woman may never want to leave.

he media/game room occupies the core of the second floor. While of elegant proportions, the comfortable space with its gently pitched ceiling, its decorative bay windows and its bricked fireplace alcove, is infused with a charming character, reminiscent of early American Architecture. The floors are sheathed in gloriously stained European white oak while the walls are treated in a studded wall covering inspired by Old World paneling. The ceiling is adorned with hand finished tin tiles. While divulging hints of modern technology, the media/game room is foremost a place for family gatherings encompassing a large sitting group and a marquetry table dedicated to game playing, drawing and writing. The room is enriched throughout with refined textures such as precious metal leafing, pen shell inlays, shagreen, alpaca wool textiles, soft leathers and raw silks. While embracing its traditional setting, the media/game room was designed for a young contemporary family’s living.

he playful design of the wallpaper along with soft luxurious fabrics in the nursery suite provide gentle comfort for both mother and baby to enjoy. Since space was a premium in the bathroom, every detail was carefully thought out and planned for, from the walk-in shower to the large farmhouse sink where baby can enjoy a warm sudsy bath. The vintage finish on the dresser, convertible crib and the day bed were carefully designed and selected not only for long term durability, but also for the sophistication and maturity it contributes to the overall design. This suite is the perfect space for a happy baby and busy mother to enjoy for many years to come.

creative use of a small room paired with sweet and feminine design inspiration have come together to create a charming room for the Nanny. A built-in daybed filled with pillows provides a cozy space to retreat and unwind from the day-to-day demands of tending to the children. Lounge seating around the brick fireplace with outdoor TV and sound system, complete the setting for a lazy afternoon outdoors or a fun party. The fireplace features an EcoSmart unit which burns bio ethanol fuel. Dining area under the umbrella and trees provides a great setting for that outdoor dinner party. The re-claimed gazebo surrounds a stunning central water fountain. The “Kitchen Garden” section provides a selection of herbs and vegetables to be picked fresh for a family farm-to-table cooking experience.

The restored playhouse comes to life with vintage and rustic old toys and native drought tolerant plants in the “Children’s Playhouse and Sculpture Garden.” Highlighting the “Aviary” and the colorful birds in flight, an original “English Bluebell” woodland scene mural provides the backdrop for this captivating space.

esigned with thoughtful consideration of the architectural style of the main residence, the Poolside Changing Rooms offer a casual elegance that will allow visitors to relax and enjoy alongside the swimming pool and patio areas. Both changing rooms offer peaceful retreat and feature luxurious stone mosaic tile flooring complimented by ceramic wall tile. Tall white wainscoting was installed in each space and complimented with crisp white walls in the pool changing room and shower and putty-colored walls in the pool changing room and water closet. Although both spaces are small in size, careful attention was given to the smallest of details, making both spaces very special. Functional space was maximized with use of pocket doors, curbless shower and vanity niches. And, in an effort to keep both spaces light and bright, a light color palate was utilized and recessed lighting was installed throughout. Both spaces also feature custom built-in banquettes with storage above and below.

n keeping with the English Arts and Crafts style of the residence, a growing arbor was installed at the entrance of the pool area, providing an immediate sense of the English Countryside. The pool shape was remodeled to create a more semi-formal style, including raised platforms with container plants at each corner and a raised spa at the back end to serve as the focal point of the whole area. The warm hues of the interlocking pavestone decking and patio perfectly match the coping and ribbons, as well as the clear blue waters of the pool. Additionally, the entire pool was raised to create a floating effect and a sense of drama. It also contains a Baja step along the front entrance to sit and enjoy the calmness. Along the perimeter of the pool are carefully placed large urns containing patio trees giving a wondrous, natural feeling to the space. Step down into the sunken fire pit area to unwind and enjoy an evening’s conversation. A covered lounging space by the rear of the pool, features a custom stone fountain.

he Rain Cascade Garden sits in the heart of the property between ample play spaces and the home. Enjoy breathtaking views of the garden from virtually every southeastfacing window of the estate. By day, see rolling earth mounded seating, burst of flowers, and paths calling for exploration. By night, watch dancing lights ensconcing retreats where friends gather. As you enter the garden, hear the crunch of permeable paths beneath your feet, and listen to the songs of native birds on the warm summer air. Breathe in the fragrance of a riotously colorful wildflower grove. Picnic or sun yourself atop aromatic mounds of velvety native meadow grass complemented by a rainfall-sustained bio-swale. From the hilltop perch at the top of the garden,

feel the undulating balance between the garden’s active gathering spaces and serene retreats. Whether you choose to watch a game from its restful built-in amphitheater or traverse its charming bridge and peaceful pathways, leave the Rain Cascade Garden feeling alive and connected with nature.

his Lily Pond is adorned and surrounded with a free-flowing assortment of plantings that accentuate and create a blend of curved boundaries and formal lines that can be admired from the east side of this English country estate. A symmetrical axis from the rear patio opens up and leads one’s view down the broad aged stone walkway that continues around the pond as a framework for this watergarden. Displayed at its core is a tremendous urn over-flowing as a center piece that is strategically placed for movement and grace as well as for its biological function. This water garden comes alive with Shubunkin Calico Comets and Rosy Red Minnows that swim amongst its tropical water lilies and aquatic plantings. The cool aquatic hues of purple, violet and blue spill over the water’s edge into the supporting landscape of Sea Lavender and a mix of drought tolerant perennials.

he Terraced Garden showcases the beauty and diversity of water wise plants, and features many different varieties of Agaves. Complimenting the architectural strength and grandeur of the Agaves are a wide assortment of succulents and other Mediterranean flowering plants. Setting the stage for this bountiful display are intricately handcrafted walkways of used brick, set in the traditional Herringbone pattern. Flanking the brick are the original concrete steps, leading the viewer on a journey, which begins, with custom made forged iron jardinières depicting dragons, and ends with another custom iron sculpture – the armillary sphere.

Sustaining the life of this garden is a state of the art drip watering system, integrated with a smart weather based controller, charting weather patterns daily, and delivering water on an as needed basis only. Combined together, you will enjoy a most unique display featuring the ultimate in water conservation and low maintenance.

Creekside Spring House 50th annual pasadena showcase house of design

T

he focal point of this beautiful woodland garden is a 100 year old spring house. Originally built to store produce, the Spring House’s cooler temperature was a natural fit for a custom wine cellar. A walnut wine rack, Murano glass chandelier and vintage club chair make it a serene escape on a hot summer evening. The babbling creek and koi pond was designed to emulate the lush English countryside. The natural underground spring that still flows was used to fill the water feature and it is integrated into the irrigation system which waters the flowers and plants. After visiting the wine cellar, you are encouraged to explore the garden pathway

that meanders through the woodland setting. One of Mystic Water Gardens’ favorite spots in the garden was building the rustic bridge that crosses over the babbling brook. High in the oak trees LED lighting was installed to create an inviting moon lit effect in the evening. Enjoy your meander through this enchanted woodland.
