We are pleased to present the elegant Cravens Estate, which is the headquarters ofthe San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter ofthe American Red Cross. It is an honor to be in collaboration with this esteemed organization.

Designed by architect,Lewis Parson Hobart, the Cravens Estate was inspired by the baroque Chateau Vauxle-Vicomte in France, which was also the inspiration for Versailles. It has a wealth ofstriking features. As you tour the house, notice the many original architectural details such as the mansard roof, the curving staircase with its graceful wrought iron railing, the opulent skylight overhead, the exquisite mouldings, and the espagnolette window hardware. The spectacular renovations bring it back to its glory days while adding the amenities, technology, and conveniences that enhance modern living.

We invite you to leisurely wander the lovely gardens or to take an informative docent led tour.An essential element ofthe Showcase experience is visiting the The Shops at Showcase. They have an incredible selection ofunique merchandise at a variety ofprices.Set amongst the beautiful grounds, the Restaurant at Showcase is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a selection ofdelicious items created by the renowned Wolfgang Puck Catering.

We are deeply grateful to the extraordinarily talented interior designers, landscape designers, and the many resources who have worked tirelessly to bring this enormous project to fruition. They have worked miracles! Also,we are indebted for the many contributions ofour Special Friends,Patrons, and Community Volunteers.

We wish to express our admiration and gratitude to the members ofPasadena Showcase House for the Arts.Their dedication, creativity, and professionalism are legendary in this community, but to have witnessed it intimately this year is inspiring.

Thank you for your patronage and for supporting our vision for the arts.Your attendance has made it possible for PSHA to contribute over $17 million in support ofmusic and the arts leaving a lasting legacy through out our community.

Enjoy your visit and welcome to the 2010 Pasadena Showcase House ofDesign!

Music Mobile™

Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile™

Designed and implemented by the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA),the Music Mobile™ has received numerous local and national awards for originality and educational excellence.Proceeds from the Pasadena Showcase House ofDesign have funded this highly effective music education program since its inception in 1971.The distinctive Music Mobile™ van filled with orchestral instruments visits third grade classrooms through out the San Gabriel Valley. To further expand its community outreach,in 2005 PSHA contracted with the Pasadena Conservatory ofMusic to present the Music Mobile™ Program.PSHA members assist Conservatory instructors as the third graders are introduced to the sounds ofthe orchestra, the individual instruments, and have the opportunity to touch and play brass, woodwind, percussion, and string instruments.Beyond the introductory information the students receive, the program serves to stimulate curiosity about music and encourages further exploration and appreciation.

As an elementary school principal I know first hand how critically important this type ofopportunity is for students.Music is one ofthose choices that will forever change a person, academically, emotionally, and personally. Each year as I watch the impact the Music Mobile™ has,I am filled with gratitude.

Unfortunately,at many schools, this is the only music instruction students will receive due to budget restrictions. But generation after generation recalls the Music Mobile™ with fondness and remembers the basics they learned there.

The cymbals bring a smile to this third grade student.
PSHA member,Shelly Reisch,assisting at Music Mobile.™

Youth Concert

Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert

On October 15th,2009,Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA),in partnership with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, hosted nearly 4,100 fourth grade students and their teachers from 47 schools throughout the San Gabriel Valley at the 2009 Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Most of the children had been introduced to the concept ofan orchestra and its instruments through the Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile™ while they were in third grade; however, for many ofthem, this was their first exposure to classical music as played by a world class orchestra such as the Los Angeles Philharmonic!

Holding the attention ofstudents and adults alike, the orchestra, conducted by David Afkham, presented an original production featuring the music ofSaint-Saëns’ “The Carnival ofthe Animals”for the 56th annual Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert. While husband and wife pianists Joanne Pearce Martin and Gavin Martin performed selections representative ofvarious animals such as a lion,a tortoise, and a swan, actress Marlene Martinez encouraged the children to roar, listen for “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”and make cuckoo noises, much to their delight.(And,when that many children roar at once in Disney Hall,it is something to hear!) So,once again, PSHA’s Youth Concert proved to be rewarding and successful for all concerned.

Eileen Reilly,PSHA Youth Concert Chairman

The Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert was generously underwritten and sponsored by The Green Foundation in collaboration with PSHA.Fourth

grade students arriving at Walt Disney Concert Hall for the 2009 Youth Concert.

Instrumental Competition

Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition

The Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition has awarded nearly $400,000 in prize money since it began in 1985.String,woodwind and brass players ranging from ages 16 to 24,living or attending school in Southern California, compete for individual prizes ranging from $500 to $6,000.The judging panel includes members ofthe Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and other orchestras. The prize monies for the Instrumental Competition are provided from the proceeds ofPSHA’s annual benefit event,The Pasadena Showcase House ofDesign.

“The level ofmastery which was on display at these auditions was truly amazing,”said Donald Green,Principal Trumpet ofthe Los Angeles Philharmonic who served as the Head Judge in 2008. “The depth ofmusical ability and understanding surpassed anything one would normally expect to hear from such young players.”

While every Grand Prize recipient is unique, many have flourishing careers.Trombonist, Achilles Liarmakopoulos, who received the Grand Prize in 2003,was invited to give a solo performance at Walt Disney Concert Hall.Flautist Abel Delgado, who won in 2000,performed twice with the Los Angeles Philharmonic as a soloist and currently holds the position ofAssistant Conductor for the Young Musicians Foundation Orchestra.1999’s Grand Prize winner, violist Richard O’Neill, was the featured soloist for the 2000 Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert and is today a member ofthe Chamber Music Society ofLincoln Center. One ofour Grand Prize Winners has even made a return visit to the Instrumental Competition. But,this time,he came as a judge.Cellist Jonathan Karoly who, after winning the competition in 1996,became the youngest member ofthe Los Angeles Philharmonic at age 22.

This year the Pasadena Showcase House Instrumental Competition has been on hiatus for reorganization purposes.Dates for the next competition will be announced on our website www.pasadenashowcase.org.

FRIENDS OF THE CRAVENS ESTATE ANNUAL FUND

ESTABLISHED FOR ON-GOING MAINTENANCE

Ben Green, CEO of the local American Red Cross Chapter, asked Steve Tobia, owner and publisher of THE Magazine, to serve as Special Volunteer Advisor for development and marketing for the Chapter, and to help spearhead "The Friends of The Cravens Estate" to raise annual funds for the on-going maintenance of the estate.

Now that the historic architectural asset has been brought back to its full glory through the generous remodeling by the Pasadena Showcase of the Arts and the talented volunteer designers and contractors, Green and Tobia are focused on raising annual funds for the maintenance of the mansion.

Throughout the year, the Cravens Estate, which serves generate income for the organizations operations and relief services. The goal of the Friends of the Cravens Estate is to have the annual operating costs of the mansion supported by friends and businesses so that 100% of the rental income goes directly to local disaster relief services.

Friends and businesses are being asked to donate a minimum of $1,000 per year, either in cash or services, and the goal is to raise $150K per year.

NEW YEAR'S EVE RED-TIE GALA

The History of the Cravens Estate

This historical photograph is courtesy ofThe Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens,San Marino,California

Completed in 1930 for Pasadena residents Mr.and Mrs.John Cravens, this elegant estate was designed by renowned San Francisco architect, Lewis P.Hobart.His inspiration for the estate’s design was the baroque Chateau Vaux-le-Vicomte,which was also the inspiration for Versailles.Situated just south ofParis, the chateau was unique in that it incorporated the grounds into the design ofthe mansion.Currently, the Cravens Estate serves as the headquarters ofthe San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter ofthe American Red Cross. In 1965,the mansion was honored with the Pasadena Beautiful Foundation Award and was designated a Pasadena Cultural Landmark by the Pasadena Heritage Society. In addition, the city ofPasadena has designated it a Landmark ofHistorical Significance, its highest category. In collaboration with the American Red Cross, this spectacular property was chosen for renovation and has been transformed into the 2010 Pasadena Showcase House ofDesign.

The Architect

Lewis Parson Hobart was born in St Louis,Missouri on January 14,1873.Upon completion ofpreparatory school in the east,he attended the University ofCalifornia,Berkeley for one year before enrolling at the American Academy in Rome.He studied architecture for three additional years at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris from 1901-1903.He returned to San Francisco following the Great Earthquake and Fire in 1906.His classical training and his expertise in steel frame construction gave him an advantage in gaining commissions for the rebuilding ofSan Francisco. Many of his structures can be seen throughout the city today, most notably being Grace Episcopal Cathedral in Nob Hill, which was inspired by 13th century French Gothic architecture.Other notable structures include the Crocker Building on Market Street and the Postal Telegraph Building on Battery Street.French-influenced residences are also prevalent on Russian Hill and in the surrounding bay area communities ofHillsboro,Palo Alto and Pacific Heights.

History of the Home Owners

John S.Cravens was born in 1871 in Kansas City,Missouri. He graduated from Yale University in 1893.Later that year,he married Mildred Myers ofSt.Louis.Mildred’s father,George S.Myers, amassed his fortune as the co-founder ofthe Liggette and Myers Tobacco Company.John Cravens worked for his father-in-law until the company was sold to the American Tobacco Company in 1900.

The Cravens had wintered in Pasadena since 1897 but chose to move permanently to Southern California in 1900.They built an English style home on what is referred to as “Millionaire’s Row,”at 1101 South Orange Grove. In the 1920s,the property was torn down to make way for the existing estate.

The Cravens were very active in local affairs and generous donors to charities throughout the Pasadena area.Mr.Cravens was the first elected president ofthe Edison Electric Company and, later, the ChiefExecutive ofthe Southwestern National Bank.He also served as a trustee ofthe California Institute ofTechnology and was a member ofthe Community Chest.

Mrs.Cravens was a founder ofthe Pasadena Children’s Training Society and also served on the boards ofthe Huntington Memorial Hospital and the American Red Cross ofPasadena. The estate was the site offrequent meetings and events, which the Cravens generously hosted. After the Cravens passed away in the 1940’s,the estate passed through a number ofowners until it was donated by Simon Zervos to the American Red Cross in 1962. The estate has been used as a backdrop in many television shows including Mad Men,Ghost Whisperer,Desperate Housewives,as well as feature films, including Being There,Public Enemy, and Traffic.

The Estate

The Cravens Estate is a refined three story,fifty-room residence with a wealth ofarchitectural features. It originally encompassed 16 acres beginning at Orange Grove Boulevard and extending to south Grand Avenue. The estimated square footage ofthe home was 19,970 square feet. The total building cost ofover $310,000 made this home one ofthe most expensive built in Pasadena at that time. The first floor had seven living rooms, a dining room,a kitchen and two pantries. The second floor included eleven bedrooms and six bathrooms. There were two bedrooms on the third floor. There was also a 1,082 square foot completed basement.Heat was provided by a gas furnace and five fireplaces.Sharing the estate with the Cravens were up to 32 servants.

The home’s impressive exterior is made ofsteel reinforced concrete, with brick veneer to create the home’s expansive facade. The mansard roof, typical ofmany French structures,is made ofVermont slate.Large French doors span across the front and back ofthe mansion.

Much ofits interior decoration, including the door and window hardware, was imported from Europe.European craftsmen were hired to install golden mahogany and French walnut paneling, gold plated fixtures, and carved mouldings.

Upon entering the foyer, one encounters spectacular painted murals, high ceilings, and marble floors. The large living room opens onto a beautiful terrace that overlooks the garden below.A stunning glass and wrought iron skylight illuminates the foyer and draws the eye up the gracious curving staircase with its decorative iron railing.Upper rooms display high ceilings, with French doors accented with lovely wrought iron balconies. Though the Cravens Estate has been reduced in size over the decades,it remains an architectural masterpiece and a part ofPasadena’s proud history. The Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts is honored to now be playing a role in its story.

Grand Entrance

Because the Grand Entrance is the first impression visitors will receive ofthe Cravens Estate, the designers’goal was to restore the large open area in such a way that visitors instantly feel like they’ve been transported back to a historic chateau in France…and they’ve succeeded admirably at this goal!

But since this estate is now the home of the San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, the paving stone entry is adorned with a Red Cross Medallion built ofcustom cut paving stones. The perimeter ofthe entrance is planted with rich texture and a touch ofcolor to soften the edges ofthe area.Plantings include New Zealand Flax,Liriope and Lavender. Portico

The Cravens Estate “Portique,”the portico entrance,is the first glimpse ofthe extraordinary artistic accomplishment and high quality craftsmanship that Mildred and John Cravens instilled in the design and construction oftheir estate.

The restored portique is comprised ofhighly elaborate scrolled hand forged iron with intricately molded lead panels and trim, framing large panels ofglass. The portique includes lead panels with Mrs.Cravens’monogram.It was designed to welcome visitors while protecting them from the elements.

Grand Gallery

Passing through the highly decorative double iron doors one traverses into the classic French entry, comprised ofhigh ceilings, carved wood paneled walls and tricolored inlaid marble floors.Framed inside the panels are murals depicting the views seen from the Chateau Vaux-leVicomte,outside ofParis, the inspiration for the design ofthe Cravens Estate. The murals, preserved and restored, are the work of renowned American muralist and illustrator Ernest Peixotto.

The walls have been darkened in order to enhance and frame the pastel colored gouache murals. In the spirit ofa true Galerie d’Art this grand entry has been furnished with sculptural furniture and chandeliers accented with a mélange of artwork in order to create the contrast of old-world craftsmanship with the synergy of modern art.

Morning Room

The designer’s goal for the Morning Room—which boasts three sets ofFrench doors, high ceilings and a cast iron fireplace— is for visitors to “smile and feel uplifted.” Walls and ceilings are cast in a neutral palette, to highlight the luxurious spring greens and warm grey fabrics accentuating the room’s white lacquered furniture.

The Morning Room is divided into two sections, with the ceiling pattern ‘marrying’ both sides. Two semi-circular rugs—one in the sitting area and another in the breakfast area—are customized for each section. In addition, all four walls are filled with circular, arched, modern French Art Deco-flavored

mirrors that pay homage to the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace ofVersailles.

A Parisian-inspired chandelier hovers over the white lacquered breakfast table. Also note the area’s Biedermeier chairs and buffet cabinets.Meanwhile, the seating area’s “French Modern Settees”are from Allen’s new line of custom indoor/outdoor furniture and lighting.

“The Morning Room shows that reflections with mirrors can add magic,”Allenconcludes.

Morning Garden

In the Morning Garden,Versailles’classical parterres merge with 21st Century Moderne, demonstrating that sustainable, drought tolerant landscapes can be chic.Inspired by the work ofAndre Le Notre, the 17th Century father of modern landscape architecture,Carson-Magness Landscapes transforms the French parterre to fit southern California’s hot,dry climate.

Vibrantly colored Mediterranean plants are woven together, with the intricacy ofa filigree jewelry box.Long lasting, drought tolerant succulents are planted in mass, making for an earth friendly alternative to water dependent annual color.Fragrant climbing roses supported by graceful wrought iron arches create an intimate setting.

Paths ofrose-colored marble echo Versailles’ Grand Trianon. Each cobble is hand laid with precision and craft, highlighting Carson-Magness’ motto ofArt and Elegance in the Landscape. Just as the old and the new merge in today’s France,a contemporary water sculpture designed exclusively for the 2010 Pasadena Showcase House ofDesign commands the center of the landscape.

Color, texture, scent and sound engage the senses, drawing you into this garden of French romance.

Solarium

It wasn’t an architectural detail that inspired Greg Parker but a vision.“A woman stepped on to the beautifully polished marble floor and paused abruptly to the opening strains of Plaisir D’Amour,” Parker recalls.

Here is a room suggesting comfort with an eye for magnificent style—beginning with the original door, thought lost until Parker rediscovered it in the attic.Greeting visitors as well is an arresting image ofMarie Antoinette by LA artist Rimi Yang.

Instead ofusing a traditional cut glass chandelier,Parker suspended three candelabras on invisible wire.An English Yew burl wood table anchors the room while the Solarium’s lattice was painted ivory and glazed chestnut with white gold accents to emphasize light and air.Gossamer sheers are trimmed with crystal.

A bronze statue ofa mandolin player has pride ofplace along with four Fishtail palms and an array ofstunning specimen orchids.

Last but not least, the magnificent two manual Harpsichord in 18th century French style lends an element ofsurprise while maintaining the feeling ofan elegant salon.

Drawing Room

For designer Joshua Cain, perhaps the greatest challenge he faced was the Drawing Room’s size.

“We worked with what we had,”Cain recalls.“To preserve the space’s historic nature,we kept the windows and walls as they are, using their colors and tones to inspire the light, bright citrus color palette.”

Furniture styles include Mexican Chippendale,French and Italian Renaissance, Italian Provincial,Moroccan,Louis XVI, Regency,William & Mary and Jacobean.Yet while the furniture is traditional, the fabrics are hip, trendy and very liveable.

To pay tribute to the estate’s current owners, the designers searched the country for vintage Red Cross memorabilia to incorporate into the space. Can you find them?

Grand Staircase & Landing

When designer Amy DeVault took on the task ofrevitalizing the Grand Staircase and Landing, her goal was to create unique focal points without taking away from the space’s classic Neo-Renaissance architecture.

“The Grand Staircase is stunning, but we needed to create small bijoux vignettes that draw the eye through the room,up the staircase, then down the hallway,”the designer explains.“At the same time,we had to make sure our space was cohesive with the adjacent rooms.”

Another challenge for DeVault was to design the chandelier hanging from the inverted, glass dome ceiling, which was restored and cleaned.Hand-painted glass panels and artwork juxtapose the space’s historic feel with current shapes and colors.

Every decorative element ofthe Dressing Room and Bathroom—from crystal chandeliers in unusual shapes and colorations to the wool carpet and closet cabinets in a simple light finish against dark walls—enhances the Art Deco flavor ofthese rooms. The Dressing Room’s ceiling, with its trompe l’oeil design, reflects the era as well.

Sitting HallwayRoom

The designer describes the Sitting Room Hallway as a “jewel box.”“It’s my reinterpretation ofFrench Baroque design”,explains Spencer.“It was also important that the area function as the perfect visual transition solution to announce the other spaces.”To achieve this, Spencer deliberately selected a neutral wall color juxtaposed against the “visual concert”ceiling that includes a dramatic mural, gilded mouldings, and crystal chandelier. The blue carpeting with the small square patterns echo the rectilinear lines in the light fixture and the mouldings in the space. The color blue was selected because in color psychology,it is the color ofauthority and the number one favorite color ofAmericans.

The unexpected ceiling acts as the main focal point in the space utilizing a Swarovski crystal cube shaped chandelier that takes on the look ofa large brilliant diamond. The fixture is created to use the same energy efficient bulb ofthe Times Square Ball.“More amazingly yet, it’s dishwasher safe making it a snap to clean!” exclaims Spencer.

Mrs. Cravens’ Sitting Room

Without question, the grand stylistic proportions ofthe Sitting Room’s historic architectural details inspired designers Albert Janz and Sherry Stein. But,at the same time, they wanted to create a room that answered the needs ofa 21st century lifestyle.

“Comfort and useful purpose were the priority,”the designers explain.“The choice ofSea Grass carpeting and casual fabrics over upholstered chairs and antique chairs—plus a wool plaid dog bed—play against the room’s formal background.”

The beautifully rendered botanical paintings on all four walls ofthe Sitting Room are original to the house, and colors from these walls are reflected in the newly painted and glazed ceiling, crown moulding and baseboards.Meanwhile, the television is an example ofthe latest in technology. The

center is also used decoratively to give the room an upbeat focus.

Abstract paintings and over-scaled plantings add the finishing touches, making a statement ofsophisticated chic.

Mrs. Cravens’ Sun Room

An expert in French chateaux and their design,Karina Oldemans envisioned a Sun Room that would be “state ofthe art,”but Oldemans’definition of“state ofthe art”may surprise visitors.

“The Sun Room doesn’t have technological advances and fancy equipment,”the designer explains.“This is rare to find today. We want this space to be a true honest escape from the daily bombardment with electronics and over-stimulation.”

The designer added the French limestone flooring in the classic Versailles pattern. In addition, the finish on the original Ionic pilasters flanking the French doors was inspired by the fireplace in the adjacent sitting room. Contrasting with the elegant surroundings is exotic tribal art, including 19th and early 20th century masks from Africa and New Guinea and aboriginal dream time paintings from Australia.“Mrs.Cravens’Sun Room is sophisticated, elegant, and comfortable in a neutral palette,”says Oldemans.“It’s a Sun Room you would find in a modern French chateau.”

Master Bedroom

The demands ofthe day melt away in the warmth and intimacy ofthe Master Bedroom.Kays brings a fresh and au courant interpretation to traditional design through her use oftextural fabrics, wall and floor coverings in wheat tones accented with touches ofslate blue.Skillfully mixing the present and past from Italian,French and American craftsmen, she creates a room that is understated, yet richly opulent…and gloriously romantic.

A canopy bed with a highly ornamental bonnet is the focus ofthe chamber.Silk wall covering,hand-painted with exquisite birds and flowering trees, wraps the walls.Inspired by the French chateau architecture, the ceiling design is a new addition. The hand-

sculpted bird and branch reliefsurrounding the chandelier offsets the ceiling’s wedding cake-like pattern.A water-gilded Italian chandelier and sconces add a touch ofdrama. “Start each day refreshed in body and soul after a peaceful night’s sleep, knowing that you will return once more to the tranquility ofthe Master Bedroom,”says the designer.

Mr.Cravens’Dressing Room is a place for a gentleman to gather his thoughts at the end ofa long day or to start a new day. It’s a sophisticated retreat for studying the latest business news or pondering the next travel destination.

Nature, travel, couture fashion and classic historical references—all inspired the room’s design. As designer Jennifer Bevan says,“Mr. Cravens’Dressing Room…the name just sounds handsomely distinguished! Surely Mrs.Cravens must find herselfhere, enjoying the luxury herself!”

Contemporary, traditional and classic furnishings—with a fine antique Biedermeier Secretary desk functioning as the centerpiece ofthe room—are combined to make this space both real and inviting. An etched glass and chrome coffee table, juxtaposed against the fine antiques, brings a hint of“bling”to the seating area while the sofa,a sophisticated example ofcustom modern furniture,is a great place for a nap!

Guest Sitting Room

Designer John Cole’s objective for the Guest Sitting Room was to create a stylish contemporary setting to welcome and envelop guests.“Above all,we wanted the furniture to be comfortable,”says the designer. But great design was not sacrificed for comfort.“Each piece is covered in luxurious fabrics with meticulous attention to detail,” Cole adds.

There are eco-friendly elements to the Guest Sitting Room as well. The handmade wall covering is a one-of-a-kind creation made from recycled paper with low VOC water-based paints.Complimenting the wallpaper—and what Cole describes as its “freeform, more modeled pattern” is the custom,abstract-patterned chandelier. The floor covering, meanwhile,is a wall-to-wall wool carpet with a stylish pinstriped pattern.

A wool area rug boasting what looks like multicolored pebbles is layered atop it.

Adding a finishing touch are art and sculptures created especially for this timeless environment.

“The Guest Sitting Room is one ofthe smaller spaces in the house,”Cole concludes. “There is nothing ‘small’about its design,it has been enhanced considerably.”

The upstairs Retreat showcases a balance of Old-World meets New Age.The sofa sets the tone for the room, upholstered with gorgeous velvet fabric and exquisite nail head detail, topped with beautiful embroidered silk pillows and embellished with elegant trim. The Fortuny chandelier illuminates the space with elegance and the mirrored cabinet brings balance to the room. The designer’s choice ofaccent pieces and furniture create a cohesive feel with eclectic and Chinoiserie design. The upholstered wall, made ofhand painted Fortuny silk and finished with beautifully embellished drapery panels, softens the area. The draperies are framed with antique walnut gold-gilded sculptures.

Meanwhile, the Balcony, with its draperies and greenery, creates a peaceful setting in the midst ofthe estate’s historic brick and concrete exterior that is so reminiscent ofOld-World Europe. With its graceful lines and deep seating, the outdoor furniture is a perfect fit while the fabric selection is a wonderful show-case of textures and patterns.

Leading down the stairwell, walls are lined with grass cloth wallpaper while the steps are lined with a sisal runner, bringing texture and movement to the area. The downstairs hall is a transition space for the Kitchen,Family/Media Room and the Mud Room—creating a graceful open feeling.

The Mud Room, with its wainscot walls and custom cabinetry,is a traditional space with a functional purpose. The drapery and roman shades add warmth to the room while the antique chandelier and artwork flood the space with personality.

Family/Media Room

For Karen Shoener, green design is not just a trend.“It is a critical global issue and a conscious choice to preserve the natural beauty ofour world,”Shoener says.Designer Genaro Lagdameo adds,“As the Family/Media Room reveals, thoughtful design and high-impact style are never compromised with the use ofecofriendly materials.Even the art and color palette evoke memories ofthe materials’origins, and those materials were carefully selected to be mindful ofour planet’s future.”Examples include fabrics from recycled plastics, reclaimed wood cocktail tables, renewable wood flooring, and wallpaper made from recycled paper.

The Family/Media Room’s transformation began with wallpaper especially created for the Pasadena Showcase House ofDesign.Thirtysix inch squares are arranged in a geometric pattern that leads the visitor’s gaze to the opposite end ofthe room. The wallpaper is also used to unify the separate seating areas. Meanwhile, the raised-pattern ceiling designs were meticulously handcrafted to echo the wallpaper design.

The original cabinetry was preserved for historic value and to incorporate the theme of preservation. It was embellished to complement the design.

Eco Kitchen

The Eco Kitchen—originally one oftwo Butler’s Pantries in the house—is an exciting opportunity to showcase the newest countertop materials, tile, appliances and fabrics in “green”design.Because PSHA historic advisors wanted as much as possible ofthe original floor tile, wood counter tops, and cabinetry to remain,Cynthia Bennett & Associates was inspired to salvage and restore these areas,to promote the reuse and sustainability ofexisting materials.

Eco-friendly elements in the Eco Kitchen include durable surfaces made from 100% recycled glass and cement, tiles created through a “zero waste process,”a faucet that turns on and offanywhere on the spout or handle, fabrics oforganic cotton, bamboo and linen,Energy Star appliances, and table, chairs, and barstools made from sustainable wood.

Terrace Garden

The designers have created an exciting, functional outdoor place for visitors to enjoy.

“The dynamic checkerboard design ofturf and pavers creates a fun visual experience,”says John Montgomery ofPacific Outdoor Living,“while the two water features provide a soothing and cooling effect. All together, these elements make a lunch break or party a memorable experience.”

The water features are simple, below grade rectangles with water bubbling up at the centers. The simplicity is reminiscent offountains from the Cravens Estate era.Plantings ofshade loving plants such as tree fern,Liriope,Dianella,Vinca, Roebelenii Palm,Duranta and Loroptalum— selected for their lushness, color and texture— provide the finishing touch.

Outdoor Kitchen & Garden

Tucked between the main terrace and back entrance into the house, the lower terrace is the perfect location for an outdoor kitchen area. “The deck surrounds the old Liquid Amber tree, which creates a natural canopy for sitting at the bar or relaxing with drinks while waiting for dinner to come offthe grill,”says Jan Ledgard.

The retractable awning provides protection from the sun while cooking or serving drinks… or sunworshippers can simply tuck it away! The designer was eco friendly by using recycled and recyclable materials, including the cabinetry and counter tops, that can withstand the elements all year round.

Sounds ofwater from the decorative fountain against the wall provide a soothing ‘musical’ backdrop against planted beds brimming with vegetables and herbs ofmany colors and aromas.

“There are many reasons to enjoy these magical plants,”Ledgard explains.“They’re a source ofgood nutrition and health and a great natural remedy. We’ve created an Outdoor Kitchen and Garden that is both user and environmentally friendly.”

Dining Room

Inspired by the original Asian style wall murals in the Dining Room,MKandcompany Interior Design has created a space that sparkles and glimmers.“We have respected the past and beauty ofthe existing architectural elements in the Dining Room,” the designers explain.“We also wanted the room to have a very luxurious and contemporary European vibe.”

Two 72”round tables break up the volume ofthe space.Above each table hang bronze and crystal chandeliers moved from the Grand Gallery.A collection ofupholstered and wood framed chairs not only provides plenty ofseating but lessens the inherent formality ofthe room.

Simple shades are hung on the French doors to soften the room, add shimmer, and

pick up the bright gold tones from the murals.A Chinese altar table takes on new life as a buffet.

The existing paneling was oiled and waxed while the original black and white marble floor was polished. The ceiling was treated with a base coat ofmetallic paint, hand painted and stenciled motifs were then added to lend additional interest to the vast ceiling.

Library & Bathroom

Designer Lawrence Rizkowsky has created a Library ofboth opulence and simplicity. Everything is arranged in symmetrical sets of two and four to mirror the room’s cube-like architecture.Grand arched windows fill the room with light…intricate herringbone floors are restored to their original luster…and knotty pine walls are in a monochromatic glaze. Fine handkerchieflinen curtains with an embroidered cuffdown the leading edge and along the bottom dress the room well while 18th century French garden urns add an organic twist. Chinese toile wallpaper provides a needed contrast to the original tile in the adjacent bathroom.

“This room is not the traditional library,” says Rizkowsky.“There’s no desk, and it’s anything but dark and smoke filled.”

Powder Room

Black tie formal is the perfect inspiration for the main Powder Room and dressing area. A classic palette ofcreams and black keep the rooms crisp and graphic. The walls are covered with a harlequin patterned French wallcovering and the furnishings are modern with a “Retropolitan”aire.Pewter colored silk, green alpaca draperiesand ivory patent-leather blend together for a subtle yet tactile combination of textures and sheens. The artwork is saturated color photographs from the American midcentury fashion icon photographer Mark Shaw. The vanity has been painted with a 1930’s French bisque finish to contrast the original rich black and gold marble floors and vanity top.

For resources please see page 107. This page is sponsored by Barbara and Ian White-Thomson.

Formal Terrace

Overlooking the gardens on the west side ofthe estate is the “Formal Terrace”.The stone surface, the concrete balustrades and the urns are still as they were when the Cravens first built their splendid French Chateau so many years ago.

The design takes its cue from the French architecture, which lends itselfto the use ofsoft textured and aromatic plants native to the Mediterranean regions ofthe world. It features both formal and less formal, whimsical elements.

The elegant urns are planted with a colorful array ofsucculents and columnar cypress flank the rear doors ofthe house.A French style glazed pot with a citrus tree is surrounded by “Goodwin Creek”lavender.A boxwood hedge winds around the two mock orange trees and a red Barberry hedge

continues the sinuous line through the planter. The rear ofthe bed is bound by espaliered apple trees under-planted with strawberries and herbs.

With this design,Canterbury Landscaping’s principle designer,Michelle Seymoure, demonstrates that a water-wise landscape can also be colorful and beautiful.

Strolling Garden

The Strolling Garden transports visitors to France’s Loire Valley, circa 1930.Meander along the Craven Estate’s existing concrete walkway to experience a traditional French knot garden. The knots provide a formal structure, complementing the estate’s architecture.Fragrant hedges form a geometric pattern with curls of bright color adding drama against a background ofglass mulch.Brick borders connect the garden to the estate’s impressive structures, while topiaries and large-scale urns raise the eye from the garden’s delights to encourage a full view of the remarkable property.

Look closely for hints ofthe garden’s true location and context.Drought tolerant rosemary, bordered by reclaimed brick, replaces the traditional, thirsty boxwood hedges.Blue fescue and other California native plants strike vibrant, dramatic notes ofcolor.Reclaimed tire mulch protects plant roots from the Pasadena sunshine, while decomposed granite pathways prevent run-offand evaporation ofprecious water.Sparkling recycled glass, sculptures,as well as an out-of-use fountain transformed into an extraordinary planter, punctuate the garden’s geometric corners.

Here formal and fun, recycled and regal go hand in hand!

The PavilionDining

Formerly a drab driveway, the Dining Pavilion is now a dramatic aviary with a delightful bird motifused throughout. It alludes to garden structures and follies that could have been found on the grounds ofa great French estate.Colorful birds and foliage echo the gardens and add a whimsical touch. From the hand painted wooden parrots perched on the dining tables to the porcelain birds holding court from their suspended cages, this all makes for a charming setting.

The color palette, which visually echoes the nearby decorative iron and stone work ofthe house, makes this enormous 3,200 square foot tent an intimate retreat.A black and golden taupe abstract botanical design unites all areas ofthe pavilion. In an interesting play ofpattern on pattern, the carpet is a large-scale reflection ofthe festive fabric used on the furniture and upholstered walls.

Cleverly, the designer’s use ofoversized “aviary mirrors”within the perimeter ofthis golden taupe tent contributes to the fantasy, by creating the allusion that one might actually be dining inside a grand birdcage. The Dining Pavilion is an enchanting place to relax and enjoy a wonderful meal but please don’t feed the birds.
