Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts presents the 2012 Pasadena Showcase House of Design

Donna Gotch

Beverly Marksbury

Benefit Chair

President

Welcome to the 48th Annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design. This year we are proud to present a magnificent 1927 Spanish Colonial Revival. This architecturally significant home, known as Casa de las Puertas or the house of doors, gained its name from its many splendidly designed wood-carved, leather tufted and metal-clad interior doors that are a main feature of this resplendent sixteen-room villa. John Winford Byers of Santa Monica, a self-trained architect, was fascinated with native California architecture and its Mexican and Spanish roots, designed the home. The property includes a guesthouse, a swimming pool and a greenhouse. Enjoy a stroll through the always-popular Shops at Showcase offering a wide selection of unique merchandise. Set amongst the beautiful grounds is our Restaurant at Showcase, La Corteza. It provides a wonderful place to relax and enjoy a selection of delicious items created by Wolfgang Puck Catering. An alfresco dining experience is offered poolside where one can enjoy the architectural landscape. Our annual benefit is truly a community effort. We salute the work of the talented interior designers, landscape designers, contractors and resources. It is these individuals including our special friends, Patrons, community volunteers and our members whose tireless and creative efforts and contributions of time, skills, and donations culminate in the success of this year’s Showcase. We are particularly grateful to the neighbors in the immediate area and to the City of La Caùada Flintridge. They understand our mission and welcomed us into their community. We appreciate their invaluable support, hospitality and community spirit. We thank the homeowners for allowing us to transform their home for our annual benefit. Thank you for your patronage and supporting our vision for the arts. Your attendance has made it possible for PSHA to donate over $18 million in support of music and the arts leaving a lasting legacy in our community. We sincerely appreciate your support.

Your Attendance Supports the Arts

An

all-volunteer organization, the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) is a 501 (c) 3 California corporation

whose members donate their talents and time to produce the annual benefit, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. The proceeds from the Pasadena Showcase House of Design have provided funding for music programs and the gifts and grants described on the following pages. Your attendance and support has enabled PSHA to make cumulative donations of over $18 million in support of the arts and provide opportunities for over 350,000 young people to discover, enjoy, and study classical music. It has also funded hundreds of programs for other non-profit organizations. These include music education, the purchase of instruments and uniforms for schools, music therapy for at-risk children or seniors, and the sponsorship of concerts, choral programs, and dance among others. PSHA has also collaborated with other non-profits in the San Gabriel Valley to assist with staffing the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Additionally, PSHA has supported and partnered with the Los Angeles Philharmonic for over 60 years. Since 1948, PSHA has enriched and made a difference in the lives of countless members of the community. With your support, PSHA hopes to leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.

Music Mobile ™ Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile™

This third grader enjoys the sound of a French horn.

Third grade students learning about brass instruments.

Designed and implemented by the members of the Pasadena Showcase for the Arts (PSHA), the Music Mobile™ has received numerous local and national awards for originality and educational excellence. Proceeds from the Pasadena Showcase House of Design have funded this highly effective music education program since its inception in 1971. The distinctive Music Mobile™ van filled with orchestral instruments visits third grade classrooms throughout the San Gabriel Valley. To further expand its community outreach, in 2005 PSHA contracted with the Pasadena Conservatory of Music (PCM) to present the Music Mobile.™ PSHA members assist Conservatory instructors as the third graders are introduced to the sounds of the orchestra, the individual instruments, and have the opportunity to touch and play brass, woodwind, percussion, and string instruments. Beyond the introductory information the students receive, the program serves to stimulate curiosity about music and encourages further exploration and appreciation. At the conclusion of the presentation each student is presented with a gift of a CD recording: The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra by Benjamin Britten and Peter and the Wolf by Sergey Prokofiev. Students leave the Music Mobile™ experience having learned about the instruments in an orchestra and having gained exposure to classical music. Stephani LaBriola Tyler Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile™ Chair Thank you to the Joseph Drown Foundation and Wells Fargo Foundation whose generosity helped fund this year’s program.

Youth Concert Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert On a glorious California November day, the Walt Disney Concert Hall came alive with the energy of over 4,100 fourth grade students. The occasion was the 58th annual Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert presented, in partnership, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. The Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert is a favorite field trip of San Gabriel Valley schools; and, in 2011, students, teachers, and chaperones from 55 schools were treated to the sights and sounds of the extraordinary Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in a program featuring the music of Felix Mendelssohn. This year the orchestra, conducted by Mihaela Cesa-Goje, performed an original production featuring Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides and his symphony No. 3, The Scottish. The story was told through letters written between Mendelssohn and his sister Fanny. Much to the young audience’s delight, gifted dancers, actors, and a bagpiper brought the story to life. Most of the children had been introduced to the concept of an orchestra and its instruments through the Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile™ while in the third grade. Over 250,000 fourth grade students have attended these youth concerts, their first exposure to classical symphonic music, and a worldclass orchestra and concert hall. The Pasadena Showcase Youth Concert was generously underwritten and sponsored by The Green Foundation in collaboration with PSHA.

The Owners On June 26, 1927, The Los Angeles Times announced the impending construction of the Robbins house as “a beautiful Spanish home,” and stated that a “sixteen-room villa…will grace a site of approximately two acres.” The estate was built as the winter home for Hunter Savidge Robbins, his wife Margaret K. Mr. Robbins’ family dates back to Colonial America and is listed in DAR records. The family fortune in Michigan was amassed through the lumber business. Hunter Robbins was an alumnus of the University of Michigan and his occupation was listed in 1930 as a theater owner. Both he and his wife were avid tennis players and active with the Flintridge Country Club. Mrs. Robbins was a local champion golfer and in charge of the women’s golf activities at the Flintridge Country Club. In 1932 the Robbins divorced. Mr. Robbins moved to San Marino but continued to visit his home in Spring Lake, Michigan. Mrs. Robbins married Donald G. Neuman in 1934 and continued to live in the house. She maintained her interest

Drawings, photographs, and published materials about the Robbins house are available in the collections of the University Art Museum at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The home is potentially eligible for listing on a local inventory of significant properties and perhaps on the California Historical Resources due to its fine design by a noted architect, its good state of preservation and its contribution to the architectural and historical context of its La Cañada Flintridge neighborhood. materials command attention in the Entrada and throughout the adjoining areas. Terracotta flooring, original Spanish tile, and arched entryways are accentuated by the rich color scheme. The powder room welcomes guests with a colorful approach to a classic style. Bronzed orange walls are highlighted by the sapphire-like drop-ins in the period style tiled floor. There is a mix of vintage and new, inspired by the textures, colors and pieces that were used in the 1920’s. The Entrada and Powder Room are where color, natural elements and casual luxury interplay for a California vibe of easy entertaining, and a space that feels comfortable and welcoming. t the heart of this old world Spanish

home, the melody from a historic tile fountain and shade from a decades old Hollywood Juniper fill the Andalusian Courtyard. New tile patios extend the home’s living space into this intrinsically charming portico. Ensconced by lush foliage, a new outdoor dining room and lounge live with the elegance of indoor rooms punctuated by ceilings of Southern California sky. Mediterranean plants overflow from pots surrounding the dining area, adding color to meals served al fresco. The heavy scent from the preserved rose garden drifts throughout the courtyard, tempting visitors into a secluded outdoor lounge. An enticing entertainment space by night, by day the lounge transforms into an optimally day-lit study. Throughout the space, new additions complement historic features and connect. Old world pottery draws the eye to historic tile details, while vibrant, climate compatible foliage draws birds and butterflies to the patio. Likewise, the courtyard’s original permeable concrete pavers serve as a pathway, enticing visitors from the outdoor rooms into the native oak woodland beyond. For resources please see page 93.

neutral, taupe and cream accented with blue tones. The soft neutral plastered walls contrast with the boldness of the Kashmir blue and white print curtain and canopy of the Spanish Colonial four poster bed. Luxurious cream Frette linens are on the bed. Darker toned furniture is highlighted with soft subtle linen fabrics. A seating area and writing desk complete the space. The ceiling is decorated with a stenciled design reminiscent of old world Spain. The sitting room is dedicated to comfort. A new limestone mantle and surround adds warmth to the space with a seating area nearby. A chaise with a comfortable Ikat print piled with pillows is an invitation for tea or to relax and immerse yourself in a wonderful book. Splashes of color are added throughout with the addition of beautiful contemporary art. A remodeled bathroom features a new stylish square stand-alone bathtub. Gleaming nickel fixtures are a striking contrast against the marble and tile. The walls are covered with an appealing mix of white, chocolate brown and taupe Spanish Moroccan tiles and the beautiful marble slab combines all the colors of the tiles. The shower and the water closet were decreased in size to allow more space in the room. A linen closet was removed to create a separate his and her cabinet and vanity. homeowner’s busy lifestyle. For her closet we chose a soft feminine look in Eggshell Ivory with shaker decorative drawer fronts while adding a touch of elegance with glass inserts in the doors. An enclosed wardrobe behind glass doors was designed for special items in the closet. A wardrobe valet extends to show off tomorrow’s ensemble and at your finger tips double pull out jewelry trays to accessorize the perfect outfit. Sweaters are kept behind doors, with the solid cedar backing protecting them from damage. Soft closing doors and ball bearing soft close drawer glides add an element of luxury this home deserves. In his closet we chose a tailored dressing room in Autumn Cherry. A successful closet is all in the details with accessories such as a built-in hamper, tie and belt racks and a jewelry tray, all conveniently at your finger tips. The floor to ceiling design is deliberate, showcasing each carefully selected garment. As a space saver, a full length mirror was installed that conveniently retracts out of sight when not in use. The top shelf has been accented with puck lights to brighten up the room. To top it off, we installed a handsome selection of hardware and added base trim for that special finish. had help in the form of existing beautiful Spanish tile that lent itself perfectly to the ambiance of one of this home's busiest rooms. We were delighted to take on the project of turning the purpose of this laundry room from an unpleasant chore into a center of efficiency, making the space you sort, fold and press as pleasant as possible. The beautiful decorative Bead Board Cabinets in Candlelight keep all the supplies tucked away out of sight. This room is now a model of efficiency with multiple hampers separating the clothes before they even go into the washer, a vital built-in dry cleaning or laundry hamper, a valet rod helping hold newly pressed items and an ironing board conveniently tucked in a drawer. Flow of work is a vital step in laundry room design as is having the right appliances. With the help of Miele, we added their latest super large capacity washing machine and gas tumble dryer. We feel this room has all the amenities necessary to turn mundane into extraordinary. For resources please see page 95.

Cork wall covering is applied to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases that flank the focal point of this space, a custom daybed topped with matching bolsters, colorful throw pillows, and the antique suzani, repurposed as a throw blanket. Behind the bed, a giant mirror visually doubles the size of the space. Opposite the daybed, a faux Tibetan lambswool beanbag and floor lamp create a fun nook for reading while a desk and chair serve as a place for guests to work on a laptop or use as a vanity. The Telephone Room is designed to give the feeling of being on a mini vacation when one sits down in this little sanctuary. For resources please see page 99.

that functions as both interior and exterior. Highlighting the beautiful arched ceiling is a large colorful mural in a traditional Spanish pattern. It has the effect of being like a rug lain across the arched ceiling. Mood lighting is provided by a chandelier meticulously placed at the center of the overhead “rug.” Both the ceiling and the neutral painted walls have an antique appearance. A unique water feature graces the south wall, and plants enliven the space. Accentuating the length of the space is a floor runner. A small seating area is perfect for enjoying morning coffee with the newspaper, or simply sitting to put on one’s shoes, while listening to the soothing sounds of the water feature, enjoying gentle breezes, and admiring the gorgeous artwork. showcases the brilliance of combining magical wonder with usability. The area was completely renovated to create a beautiful place to relax with the sound and beauty of nature. The pond and stream have been completely restored along with the gorgeous landscaping to make the area a true outdoor oasis. With the addition of two patios the space can now be used as a seating area where guests can relax to the tranquil sounds of flowing water. The new pergola added to the upper patio is made from a material designed to last a lifetime to make the area virtually maintenance free and more inviting. from the ground, etched with abstract imagery that evokes the branches from the surrounding arborist landscape. Dominating the interior areas are materials that include wood, glass and natural stone. To minimize the industrial feeling of the tent structure, interesting textures, organic materials, raw fabrics, reptile embossed vinyl, and authentic camouflage all combine to further integrate the “modern tree house concept. Wooden dining tables, benches, chairs and lounge seating are placed in patterns that integrate harmoniously with the other design elements. A drop ceiling and fabric chandeliers are hung at optimum height to not only strategically illuminate the seating areas below, but also to create an intimate and warm environment. The casual outdoor bar and lounge area links the eating emporium to the grounds of the property. For resources please see page 101.
