2013 Pasadena Showcase House of Design It is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2013 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. This year we are proud to present a handsome 1941 estate designed by renowned architect Roland Eli Coate, Sr. During the restoration, Showcase designers reconfigured several areas and added amenities and conveniences that enhance modern living. But the designers also added many graceful design elements and, looking closely, it may be very difficult to tell if they are original to 1941 or recent additions. Docent led tours of the exquisite gardens are available or you may leisurely explore them on your own. We are delighted to welcome Estate Catering at the Huntington for our onsite restaurant Sixty Six West and The Santa Anita Pub. Both are charming places to relax and enjoy the delicious items offered. Please visit The Shops at Showcase. Perennial favorites and interesting new vendors have an incredible selection of unique merchandise. We wish to express our admiration and appreciation to the gifted designers and the hundreds of craftsmen who worked so hard to bring this project to fruition. They have worked miracles in ninety days and brought flair and sophistication to every inch of the property. Thank you also to our generous Sponsors, Special Friends, and all of the Resources who contributed to make this residence a showcase of style and elegance. We are indebted to the Community Volunteers who partner with us to staff during Showcase. Their support is crucial to our success. Likewise, we are thankful for the funding from our Patrons. Their donations are greatly appreciated. We are deeply grateful to the members of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts. Their dedication, resourcefulness, tenacity and professionalism are legendary in the community. We also want to express our heartfelt thanks to “Team 13, the Benefit Committee, who worked most closely on the project this year. They are an impressive group who unfailingly found solutions to challenges, offered creative new ideas and inspired us with their friendship, commitment, loyalty, humor and generous spirit. Thank you for your patronage. Your attendance has made it possible for us to contribute over $18 million in support of music programs and has brought a lasting legacy to the community. We hope you enjoy your visit. Welcome to the 2013 Pasadena Showcase House of Design!

Your Attendance Supports the Arts An all-volunteer organization, Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) is a 501(c)3 California corporation whose members donate their time and talents to produce the annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design. The proceeds from the Pasadena Showcase House of Design have provided funding for the music programs and the gifts and grants described on the following pages. Your attendance and support has enabled PSHA to make cumulative donations of over $18 million to support the arts and to provide opportunities for over 350,000 young people to discover, enjoy and study classical music. It has also funded hundreds of programs for other non-profit organizations. These include our longstanding support of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association plus the purchase of instruments and uniforms for school bands, music therapy for seniors and at-risk children, the sponsorship of concerts and many others. PSHA also provides funds to other non-profits who provide assistance with staffing the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Since 1948, with your support, PSHA has enriched the lives of countless people and brought a lasting legacy to the community.

Music Mobile™ Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts continues its long tradition of bringing the Music Mobile™ program to third grade students in the San Gabriel Valley. Since its inception in 1971, this award-winning program has introduced the magic of a symphonic orchestra to over 120,000 children. Beginning in 2005, PSHA has partnered with the Pasadena Conservatory of Music (PCM) to expand our community outreach with the Music Mobile™ program. Together PCM musicians and PSHA members travel to local schools with the very distinctive Music Mobile™ van loaded with brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments. Students participate in a hands-on presentation of orchestral instruments. They listen, learn and are Trying percussion instruments during Music Mobile™

given the opportunity to play the instruments, culminating in a simulated symphony orchestra. Beyond the introductory information the students receive, the program serves to stimulate curiosity about music and encourage further exploration and appreciation. Each student receives a CD of orchestral music as a gift to enhance the experience. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the surprise and delight on the faces of the children as they experience the sound and feel of orchestral music, some for the very first time. A generous donation from the Wells Fargo Foundation helped fund this program. Rose Marie Toliver

Youth Concert On a beautiful day last November, over 4,000 enthusiastic students representing 50 schools were ushered into the magnificent Walt Disney Concert Hall for a lasting memory of music. Our talented and extraordinary partner in this event, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, provided the exhilarating sights and sounds of the day. The 59th Pasadena Showcase House Youth Concert epitomizes the commitment of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts to the musical education of our youth. The 45-minute full theatrical production enthralled the students while teaching musical concepts. This year, fourth-graders were delighted by Mother Goose (composed by Maurice Ravel and conducted by Rafael Payare), which took children through the magical journey of a character called Creature in search of his identity. Through the various orchestral instruments, Creature was introduced to the stories of Sleeping Beauty, Little Thumb, Green Serpent and The Beast. The success of the Mother Goose Youth Concert was made possible through proceeds from the Pasadena Showcase House of Design and a generous donation from The Green Foundation. PSHA has awarded over $18 million to a variety of non-profit organizations and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and has provided opportunities for over 225,000 children to attend its annual Youth Concert. Only with the help and support of our communities and their residents have we been able to continue our commitment to these worthwhile programs. We thank you for making it possible. The History We are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to revisit this historic home, once again, thirteen years after it was the 2000 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Located in lovely Arcadia, first settled by Hugo Reed who was deeded the land by the Spanish government. He built the first structure and stocked cattle on the land. The area’s better-known owner was Lucky Baldwin who in 1875 bought about 8,000 acres at $25 per acre. Accounts state that when he first saw the fertile land he declared “By Gads! This is paradise”. Indeed the nearby foothills, the abundance of majestic trees, and the lush greenery continue to inspire visitors. Lucky cultivated the land with farms, orchards, ranches and began erecting buildings with the intent of transforming the area into a beautiful and successful city of distinction.

The Architect Roland Eli Coate, Sr., (1890-1958), who designed this year’s estate, was a renowned architect in Southern California. He attended Earlham College in his hometown of Richmond, Indiana for two years and then transferred to Cornell University where he graduated in 1914 with a degree in architecture. From 1915-1917, he worked for the prestigious New York architectural firm Trowbridge and Livingston as a draftsman; and, during World War I, spent 17 months as part of the American Expeditionary Forces. After his military duty, in 1919, Coate moved to California where he eventually joined the architectural firm that became known as Johnson, Kaufmann and Coate. While a junior partner at the firm, Coate helped design the now demolished St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Los Angeles and All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena. When the firm dissolved in 1925, Coate started his own practice in Pasadena, which he ran until 1942. His first solo commission was the All Saints Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills. He went on to design many beautiful homes in the greater Pasadena area as well as on the Westside, including residences for golden-era Hollywood celebrities, Robert Taylor and Barbara Stanwyck, Myrna Loy, Frank Capra and David O. Selznick. Although best known for his Monterey Colonial style (he is credited with designing the first home of this style, the Bixby House in South Pasadena), he was also adept in other Romantic Revivals, such as English Tudor, American Colonial and Spanish Colonial Revivals, as well as California style ranch houses. His designs reflected a sense of unity, effortless flow and simplicity and were a testament to the region’s heritage. They combined a formal street-facing exterior with an informal interior that opened to the outdoors. Plans often encompassed central hallways with direct access to public rooms, generous patios that lent themselves to outdoor living and quiet areas for privacy and serenity. Coate became a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1937. After 17 years, he closed his practice and went to work with the engineering firm of Bechtel, McCone and Parson in Alabama until 1944. He was active in his profession until his death in 1958. His son, Roland E. Coate, Jr., followed in his father’s footsteps and became an architect.

The Estate This Monterey Colonial residence exhibits stylistic features of a number of Colonial Revival subtypes—a mixture for which Coate was wellknown in his attempt to create a native “California style.” Although the house does not present the usual full second-story balcony of most Monterey Colonials, it does have rustic brick walls, a low-slung shingled roof, shutters, wrought-iron details and simple casement windows —all of which recall the buildings of early California. Originally a vacant 4.5 acre parcel owned by the Title Insurance & Trust Company, which owned the entire tract, the neighborhood was then known as Santa Anita Oaks or Rancho Santa Anita. Builder Philip S. Pomeroy of Pasadena constructed the residence in 1941 at a cost of $70,000. The impending construction of the house was announced in the November 22, 1940 issue of Southwest Builder and Contractor. It

was described as a two-story, fifteen-room dwelling, with “brick veneer exterior; shingle roof; four-car garage with overhead doors; six baths; showers; gas furnace heating; steel casement windows; two fireplaces; marble work; ornamental iron; playhouse; barbecue; swimming pool; badminton court; tile, oak and linoleum floors; gas water heater; laundry rooms; [and] landscaping.” In 1959, when the property was sold, it was subdivided down to its current size of 1.79 acres. In 2000, the home had the distinction of being the 36th Pasadena Showcase House of Design.

First Owners The home was designed for third generation furniture executive, C. Lawrence Barker of the former upscale Southland furniture chain, Barker Brothers. Mr. Barker had five children; three with his first wife, Natalie Cole, who passed away in 1920 at the age of 28, and two daughters with his second wife, Josephine Garat Barker. He shared the house with Josephine, the children and his widowed mother, Mrs. Pauline Barker. The Barkers were well-known hosts in Arcadia. They often entertained friends and held charity events for up to 500 attendees, entertaining guests with buffet suppers and barbecues on the spacious grounds of their estate. It is said that they purposely planned for their house to be a showplace for the furniture of the family business. Barker Brothers grew to become one of Southern California’s most popular furniture stores and one of the world’s biggest house-furnishing outfitters, with 22 branches throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Until 1984, its flagship store remained in downtown Los Angeles, most recently at 818 West Seventh Street, which covered 23 acres of floor space. The Pasadena store was located at 301 South Lake Avenue (southeast corner of Del Mar Boulevard). After 110 years, the chain went out of business in 1991. The Enchanted Entry

Pacific Outdoor Living Terry Morrill, Trent Morrill & Chad Morrill 2727 Foothill Boulevard La Crescenta, CA 91214 818.244.4000 www.pacificoutdoorliving.com

As you enter the front grounds, you are suddenly enveloped in the marvelous sounds of rushing waters from the 80 foot long, babbling brook coursing along the eastern perimeter of the great lawn. Surrounded by woodland rocks and plants, the stream looks as if it were carved out by natural processes over hundreds of years and the home built around it. Dappled sunlight, filtered through two giant Sycamores and an Oak, forms patterns on paved and grassy pathways leading into hidden gardens hosting sculptures, disappearing fountains and one-of-a-kind art works. A central plaza provides a seating area where one can sit and admire the lush gardens. The Enchanted Entry strives to transform the mood of all who visit this magnificent home to one of peace and tranquility. For resources please see page 110.

The Powder Room

askDECOR Nancy Del Santo & Katie Grantz 2275 Huntington Drive #894 San Marino, CA 91108 626.458.2225 www.askDECOR.com

Remember your first jewelry box? You raised the lid to see a tiny ballerina and a magical world unfolded. The Powder Room was designed with this sense of wonder in mind. A large, antique-mirrored screen calls attention to a beautiful bronze sculpture. Metallic linen wallpaper and golden finished fixtures reflect light while polished marble surfaces and a black glass vessel sink add sparkle. Fabric softens the sink and a sheer woven material covers the window. Metallic trim and accessories finish this area. The walls are punctuated with elegant and ethereal photography, referencing the female form and flowers. The lyrical lines of the art juxtapose with strong geometric design motifs for a perfectly balanced and appealing space, making the smallest room of the house a grand statement of style. Stepping inside this grand home through its charming front vestibule flanked by fluted columns the house welcomes its guests. With walls covered in fabric, the color of winter wheat, it wraps this large space in soft texture and serves as the perfect backdrop for a mix of striking contemporary and traditional art. Gaze up at the second floor ceiling with its applied molding detail which echoes the original mullioned doors that lead to The Family Room. The centerpiece of the space is the art glass chandelier with hand blown orbs in shades of ocean blues. The Entry’s understated neutral pallete should set the stage for the incredibly designed rooms that lead from it. For resources please see page 110.

The Library is a creative mix of Old World charm and present day sophistication, perfectly blended together to create an environment for quiet relaxation or enjoyable entertaining. Deep saturated colors grace the walls, ceiling and furnishings throughout the room. Multi-purpose inset bookcases highlight art, collected objects and stacks of books. The bookcases, along with the paneling, have been lacquered in a rich gray. The ceiling was achieved with a custom lacquered grasscloth design. A local blacksmith made the fireplace surround from steel plate that was finished with a blackened patina. The large table, made of reclaimed teak wood from Indonesia, complements the gilded 19th century side chairs while modern wing chairs and contemporary art pair seamlessly in the space. The best times happen in The Family Room, from morning coffee and intimate book club get-togethers, to wine tasting with friends or weekend movie nights. To accommodate a family’s needs, the space was expanded and fashioned into one large, open setting that combined two rooms of different ceiling heights. Wallpaper blankets the ceiling and is intertwined with intricate patterned molding and dramatic lighting for a unifying effect. Seating areas are ideally situated and mindful of the traffic flow, adjacent rooms and patios. Equipped with the latest amenities, a touch screen incorporates a smart home design for immediate access to stock quotes, security, shopping and more. Rich wool and linen fabrics in blues, greens, taupes and creams blend with unique finishes, inviting one to breathe in the feeling of coming home. For resources please see page 112.

As the grand stairway wraps upward landing at the second floor the viewer may look south through the large doors of the second floor balcony to the front lawn areas and its leafy mature trees. The wallcovering of soft wheat colored fabric continues from the first floor. A handsome 18th century Buffet de Corps flanked by Russian library chairs ground the space with classic detail. Walking down the halls to the left & right of the landing one enters a soft sanctuary with walls upholstered in denim blue damask. The antique gilded sconces sparkle and reflect the luster of the incredible 18th century Swedish chests. All of the design elements work in concert to provide a feeling of quiet intimacy as you enter each of the beautiful bedrooms of this lovely home. For resources please see page 112.

Saxony Design Build reduced the footprint of The Butler’s Pantry to create a scale that was more balanced with the kitchen and would create space for the coffee bar and other features. The Butler’s Pantry was designed to be used in a very traditional fashion to store china, linens, and kitchen overflow. Additionally it will now provide space for buffets for parties and has been designed to be aesthetically pleasing. In serving this purpose, the space has an abundance of antique glass doors, cabinets that are lit from inside, historic nickel ceiling fixtures and cabinet hardware. The same limestone & marble flooring from the kitchen is carried into this space, as well as the same style of cabinetry and details to lend continuity between the two rooms. Evoking images of the famous Route 66, which once served as a major path for those migrating west in the 1930’s and 1940’s, the décor and varied menu represent new beginnings, organic elegance and Monterey Colonial charm. Much like a 1940’s steakhouse, walnut wainscoting accents flax lined walls. Traditional chandeliers and banquette seating combined with modern lighting and vineyard-inspired bistro chairs create a cozy and comfortable atmosphere with a nod to California’s rich history. Guests can enjoy the comfortable indoor décor or relax at one of the garden tables that exude the same sense of style and charm. For resources please see page 121.
