elcome to the 2015 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. This year we are revisiting a distinguished
estate designed by Fernand Parmentier in 1910. The house is an eclectic English Tudor combined with Craftsman
elements. The artistic innovations and philosophy of the burgeoning Arts and Crafts movement are evident throughout this striking structure. It features many historical and unique architectural elements including: Honduras mahogany beams and molding; cast plaster ceilings; and distinctive Greuby tile. The main residence is over 9,400 square feet and a 2,600 square foot Carriage House with an upstairs apartment complements it. The property includes many mature trees, a pool, a koi pond, and a wysteria arbor. This handsome home was the 1993 Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Docent led tours of the exquisite gardens are available or you may leisurely explore them on your own. We are delighted to welcome TasteBuds Culinary for our onsite restaurant, which is a charming place to relax and enjoy the delicious items offered. Please visit The Shops at Showcase. Perennial favorites and interesting new vendors have an incredible selection of unique merchandise. We wish to express our admiration and appreciation to the gifted designers and the hundreds of craftsmen who worked so hard to bring this project to fruition. They have worked miracles in ninety days and brought flair and sophistication to every inch of the property. Thank you also to our generous Sponsors, Special Friends and all of the resources who contributed to make this residence a showcase of style and elegance. We are indebted to the Community Volunteers who partner with us to staff during Showcase. Their support is crucial to our success. Likewise, we are thankful for the funding from our Patrons. Their donations are greatly appreciated. We are deeply grateful to the members of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts. Their dedication, resourcefulness, tenacity, and professionalism are legendary in the community. We also want to express our heartfelt thanks to “Team 15, the Benefit Committee, who worked most closely on the project this year. They are an impressive group who unfailingly found solutions to challenges, offered creative new ideas, and inspired us with their friendship, commitment, loyalty, humor, and generous spirit. Thank you for your patronage. Your attendance has made it possible for us to contribute more than $20 million in support of music programs and has brought a lasting legacy to the community. We hope that you will enjoy your visit.

L.C. Bauer, Designer & Builder The Alfred E. Freeman House, 1926
1255 Wentworth — Pasadena $4,999,000 The first of two estates commissioned by the Freemans during the economic optimism of the 1920s, their L.C. Bauer-designed home reflects the eclectic, interpretive designs of Southern California regional vernacular architecture. Incorporating elements of Italianate, Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean revival themes, Bauer’s well-executed design reflects the growing milieu of architectural eclecticism which dominated the region until the great depression. Far from the harsh New England winters Alfred Freeman experienced until his retirement to Pasadena in 1926, the bucolic South Oak Knoll neighborhood near the Huntington Hotel provided an idyllic setting for Freeman and his wife, Ethel. While the Freemans only resided at their first home for one year until building their next home on South El Molino, they commissioned a third home in 1931, one block south of their first commission. 5 Bedrooms, 7 Bathrooms, Pool, Guest House, 2 Car Garage. First offering in 55 years.

Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf and Elizabeth Hofmann. They’re all here at Villa Gardens. From literary lectures and political discussions to evening concerts, Elizabeth found a rich new quality of life, a warm welcome, and the peace of mind that comes from living in an award-winning continuing care retirement community. And that was just the beginning. She now leads a tai-chi group, sharing a long-held interest with her new friends. And she’s a mentor, too, introducing new Villa Gardens residents to the stimulating, supportive community she loves. And with Pasadena’s restaurants, shops, plays, museums, and her daughter all close-by, Elizabeth is right at home.

Your Attendance Supports The Arts
P
asadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) is an all-volunteer 501 (c) 3 California corporation whose members donate their time and talents to produce the annual Pasadena Showcase House of Design.
The proceeds from the Pasadena Showcase House of Design have provided funding for the music programs and the gifts and grants described on the following pages. Your attendance and support has enabled PSHA to make cumulative donations of over $20 million to support the arts and to provide opportunities for over 350,000 young people to discover, enjoy, and study music. It has also funded hundreds of programs for other non-profit organizations. These include music education, the purchase of instruments and uniforms for school bands, music therapy for at-risk children and seniors, the sponsorship of concerts, in addition to our long-lasting support of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association among many others. PSHA also provides funds to other non-profits who provide assistance with staffing the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. Since 1948, with your support, PSHA has enriched the lives of countless people and brought a lasting legacy to the community.

Music Mobile
™
Every year, the distinctive Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile™, in partnership with Pasadena Conservatory of Music (PCM), introduces musical instruments to third-graders in the San Gabriel Valley. This season, they have hit a high note with their expanded program. In addition to a hands-on lesson where students play brass, woodwind, percussion, and string instruments, the Music Mobile™ program now features a multi-media presentation complete with images and high quality sound. Teachers are then given a robust music curriculum folder chock full of lessons designed to help students connect music to other parts of their education. Throughout the 2014–2015 season, the Music Mobile™ will visit 30 elementary schools and give 82 assemblies to approximately 2,600 children in Pasadena, Rosemead, Duarte, Temple City, Arcadia, San Marino and La Cañada Flintridge. Music Mobile™ has received numerous local and national awards for originality and educational excellence. PSHA has collaborated with PCM since 2005 to bring orchestral instruments to schools in the San Gabriel Valley. For the past 42 years, the Music Mobile™ van has introduced over 123,000 third-graders to musical instruments. Barbara Damerel Pasadena Showcase House Music Mobile™ Chair

Youth Concert The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association shared a special celebration with 4,000 fourth grade students from 50 schools in the San Gabriel Valley on October 15th when Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) presented its 61st annual Youth Concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The celebration was the 10th anniversary of the venue’s pipe organ, affectionately referred to as “French Fries” — so nicknamed because of the distinctive appearance of its 6,145 pipes that range in size from a pencil to a telephone pole. The Youth Concert cleverly weaves educational information into an amusing storyline that keeps the students engaged. This year, a confused plumber came to fix the pipes and received quite an education about the pipe organ. Intertwined among the fun, students were treated to performances by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. Comments made by students waiting to exit include:

Ashley — “It was great. It gave me different feelings. And it was funny. The plumber made it funny.” Jack — “I liked it so much because it has so many instruments. I didn’t even know there was such a thing as the organ. I like the Walt Disney Concert Hall and I think whoever comes here will like it. I will come back again.” Grace — “I like how the orchestra and the organ played together; it sounded really great. It was not what I expected. This was my first concert and I want to come here again.” Hannah — “I love the music and how everything was up and down. The Walt Disney Concert Hall is really cool, really fancy.” One of the annual music programs sponsored by PSHA, the Youth Concert is a perennial favorite amongst members because of the instant satisfaction of watching the students’ faces and hearing their laughter and applause. The History
P
asadena Showcase House for the Arts is fortunate to re-visit this distinguished estate, previously known as the “Eliot House,” 22 years after its debut as the Showcase House in 1993. Built in 1910, the 9,400 square foot English Tudor main residence
has significant Craftsman influences with the principal entrance overlooking the interior garden area rather than the street. Using local materials, it unites the artist with the actual construction and integrates the house with its environment. A 2,600 square foot Carriage House with an upstairs apartment that once housed the chauffeur and coachman complements it. The one and half acre property includes many mature trees, gardens, pool, Koi pond, outdoor kitchen, and a wysteria arbor. The main floor contains arched openings with large open rooms, Honduras mahogany beams and moldings and unique cast plaster coffered ceilings. The artistic innovations and philosophy of the burgeoning Arts and Crafts movement are evident throughout this striking structure, including horizontal bands of windows, a broad front porch, grand entry fireplace with stunning Greuby tile, extensive built-in cabinetry and a stained-glass window above the stairway. The second floor contains the family living quarters, including four bathrooms, three bedrooms, family room, writer’s room, and artist’s retreat. The original cost to build the home was $32,927, considered a very high sum at the time.
THE ARCHITECT: Fernand Parmentier was born in Paris and educated in the Alsace region of France until moving to Chicago at age 14 to live with an aunt. He started his career in Chicago at age 22 as a draftsman for noted architect Solon S. Beman, known for several Chicago Landmarks, including the Grand Central Train Station, as well as the elaborate Château style homes of newly-established wealthy families, including Marshall Field, Jr. Parmentier moved to California and obtained his license in architecture following additional training with P. J. Barber in Santa Barbara. Barber was credited with building the first bay-window home in San Francisco, as well as being the architect on nearly all the principal buildings in Santa Barbara, such as the county court-house, and numerous fine homes for prominent citizens. You will see a bow window in the dining room of the estate, no doubt influenced by Parmentier’s training. Parmentier then moved to Los Angeles and soon established his own design firm in downtown Los Angeles in 1894. He was noted for his designs for The French Hospital and the First Christian Science Church. He was also very active in his profession, serving as a Fellow of the Southern California Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Although he once lived in Pasadena, this year’s house was the only residence Parmentier designed in Pasadena. Parmentier returned to France in 1914 and joined the Alsation 74th regiment, but was fatally wounded in battle in 1915 at the age of 50. It is a testament to Parmentier that, in its 105 year history, very few significant changes have been made to his original design. THE BUILDER: Eckford D. Tyler was a popular building contractor of the period and built several homes in the Fair Oaks/Orange Grove historical district. 38

Architect Ferdnand Parmentier
The house circa 1914 LOCATION: The estate is located in the Oak Knoll district, an area made famous by Henry E. Huntington. In 1905, Huntington, the William R. Staats Company and A. Kingsley Macomber, formed the Oak Knoll Company. They soon acquired a 300 acre parcel of land for development of luxury estates, with the Eliot House being one of the first completed. THE OWNERS: John V. Eliot built the home as a “honeymoon house” for his new bride, Ellen Rowena Blossom, to create a setting that would complement her beauty and her love of the outdoors. Prominent in Pasadena society, the couple’s wedding was the highlight of the 1909 season. The newlyweds entertained many friends in the 9,400 square foot main house and stunning gardens. Mrs. Eliot, an expert horsewoman, boarded her horses in the 2,600 square-foot carriage house, which also included an upstairs apartment for the chauffeur and coachman. The Eliots had two children. After the Eliots moved in 1915, the house had several owners through the depression years. In 1944, Albert Luer, president of the Luer Packing Company, a graduate of Polytechnic High School, purchased the property. The Luer family made the first major modification to the home with the enclosure of the second floor sleeping porch. In 1958, Dr. and Mrs. Carlos Prietto bought the home to accommodate their twelve children. The third floor of the home was converted into the boys’ dormitory. The second structural change was made by the Priettos who enlarged the kitchen by removing the wall that separated it from the servant’s dining room. s you enter the Showcase House, note the charm of The West Veranda with its dazzling views of the gardens. It
is accented by green pots that pay homage to Grueby Faience Company tile that lies just behind the front door. The West Veranda is outfitted with a small stone top checkerboard gaming table that doubles as an informal dining area. In the adjacent seating area, one can imagine snuggling up with a book on the furniture of Ipe wood from Central America. As the days pass by, the wood will age and continue to grey naturally, adding a classic weathered aesthetic to the leafy green background. And, for an unexpected pop, outdoor area rugs accent the space. For resources please see page 108.

A stylish, yet inviting, seating area features colorful throw pillows that have punches of fuchsia pink. As visitors wander through the space, they will notice a vibrant Frida Kahlo-like portrait and several signature elements from the artist’s paintings that have been peppered throughout the design. Leopard print and snake skin accessories add a dramatic flair to the beautiful furnishings. Additional prominent features such as delicate lace, plush velvets and elegant organic forms emphasize the unique cast plaster ceiling and are portrayed in the one-of-a-kind furniture pieces. he Dining Room takes its cues from
the home’s intricate detailing with a
contemporary approach that lends itself
to the lifestyle of a multi-generational family. The plaster motifs have been meticulously uncovered and restored. The leafing over the wall medallions provides contrast bringing attention to the ornaments. The Honduran mahogany has been deliberately highlighted with a clear varnish magnifying its copper tones; the delicate moldings embellished with a walnut stain; and, the pine accoutrements painted indigo and crimson red. The warm grey walls contribute to the room’s historical integrity. The luscious silks of the draperies, the significant area rug and the fine textile lining the cabinet’s panels collectively add to the room’s unity, as the architect envisioned it. The astonishing table, the sumptuous Italian dinnerware, the contemporary masterpieces, and other decorative pieces in the Dining Room comprise a sophisticated décor suitable for intimate and extravagant occasions alike.” For resources please see page 108.

esigned with hues of rich navy blue, subtle textures, and gilded accents, the Butler’s Pantry is a sophisticated
room all its own connecting the kitchen and formal dining room. Deep navy on the cabinets is offset with geometric print wallpaper in shades of cream, champagne and taupe. The cabinets are surrounded in walls covered with grasscloth to add an element of texture and depth and are filled with crisp white china and crystal stemware to supply all of the home’s entertaining needs. The brass hardware, Carrera marble countertops, gold-painted iron lanterns, and antique Persian rug atop the parquet floor work together to create a classic and timeless look for this Pasadena estate. biomorphic sculptures made from scrap metal by Brazilian artist Leandro Gabriel encourage spirited conversation as well as thoughtful deliberation. A seating area provides a place to contemplate the surroundings and enjoy the estate’s beautiful grounds. The new furniture pieces add a relaxing touch. Made of iron and covered in an outdoor linen weave fabric, the new lounge allows one to pass the time in sheer comfort. The casual dining furniture, set with Italian earthenware dishes, natural linen napkins and blackened stainless steel flatware, makes this cozy corner perfect for weekend brunch or early evening cocktails. he Powder Room and Hall is best
described as “Vintage 1900s Light / Shadow
revisited with New Millennium Artistry.
The design emphasizes the simplistic lines of the Craftsman movement and the intricate details of the Tudor manor, all in a re-imagined New Millennium approach. Lighting is the main focus. Vintage styled Edison bulbs, just becoming popular in the early twentieth century, are featured in polished nickel wall fixtures and sconces. Also paying homage to the past, is a mounted trophy head of a twelve-point stag, which was prevalent at the time. We re-created it with an illuminated wall sculpture made with 3D printed polyamide lace and glossy white paint. A crisp color palette incorporating beautiful white and grey Carrera marble and ebony accented woods reflects the basics of light and shadow and ties the space together. for everyday living. Designed in an
aesthetic that complements this historic home, the kitchen includes all the amenities a modern chef could want. In a palette of whites and grays, elements throughout the kitchen reinforce traditional craftsman motifs. Honed limestone countertops contrast with the dramatic statuary marble on the island and pair with a timeless Shaker-style cabinet. The flooring has the appearance of hardwood, but is a porcelain tile that offers excellent durability and easy maintenance. The dining area adjacent to the beverage center is perfect for family dinners. Artisan-made hanging lanterns and sumptuous embroidered linen-and-silk window treatments add extra luxury to this casually elegant kitchen. For resources please see page 113. entry enhances the facade and leads you up the stairway. The walls, upholstered in a natural linen, add an element of luxury while serving a practical purpose of insulating against acoustics and drafts. Patterned carpets add a touch of tactile excitement to this refined space. The ceiling takes its cue from the unique cast plaster ceilings of the main residence and features an anaglyph simulating embossed tin. An array of botanical-themed artwork, lithographs and prints are displayed along the picture rail. Become A Member Love Showcase? Consider Becoming a Member.
M
ost members of Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts (PSHA) volunteer because of a deep desire to help provide funding for the arts. Like all community service, the real benefits are intangible but deeply gratifying. Design and architecture aficionados are attracted to PSHA because they enjoy observing the renovation of an estate for the Pasadena Showcase
House of Design and the opportunity to learn about new design products and concepts. However, it is important to note that the majority of PSHA positions are not related to design. Most members find a camaraderie that often flourishes into life-long friendships. Many cherished memories have been made at the end of the day as the members debrief and share experiences. Recently a member was asked about the legendary commitment of PSHA members. Her response was, “It is the personal stories about how these funds impact the community, especially its children, that compels us all to roll up our sleeves and work even harder. It is an honor to be a part of this legacy. For more information contact membership@pasadenashowcase.org
