A Regional Perspective
One voice to drive South Florida forward. That is the vision for the South Florida Business Council (SFBC).
This partnership of business leaders committed to tackling the region’s most critical issues, including transportation, education, affordable housing, water management and tourism growth.
The Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches has joined with the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce to form the SFBC, which uses its resources to identify and implement solutions.
“Our three chambers are working together to address issues that affect businesses throughout South Florida,” said Donald Burgess, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches. “We believe a coordinated approach is essential.” For instance, the SFBC created a mutual aid agreement to ensure continuity of service to members in the event of any natural or man-made emergency or disaster.
The tri-county region is the 12th-largest economy in the United States when measured by gross domestic product, according to Dan Lindblade, president and CEO, Greater Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce. “While our region’s businesses are spread across county lines, there is no separation between the immense contribution they make to South Florida’s success and vitality,” he said. “Therefore, we must work cohesively as a region to ensure that one collective voice is heard by lawmakers at the state and federal levels, as well as policymakers and local elected officials when it comes to matters that impact a business owner’s ability to thrive in South Florida.”
Noting that regional partnerships are becoming more common across the nation, Alfred Sanchez, CEO, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, said, “We need to approach challenges like sea level rise and transportation from a broader perspective, as they affect our three-county area equally. “The SFBC will have a stronger voice combined than each of the counties would have individually.”
The council is funded by the three chambers, and led by a board of directors comprised of three representatives from each chamber. Leadership of the Council will alternate yearly, with each chamber putting forth a representative on a rotating basis.
