FoundCare launched in 1985, and was then known as Comprehensive AIDS Program of Palm Beach County (CAP). By 2000, the 501(c)(3) health center began to expand its services, changing its name to FoundCare and becoming a Federally Qualified Health Center. In its first year of service, FoundCare scheduled 13,000 patient visits with a $3 million budget; now the facility schedules more than 135,000 patient visits annually with a $40 million budget and seven locations throughout Palm Beach County. Its latest center opened in Okeechobee Boulevard in West Palm Beach, with a future center planned in the heart of Riviera Beach.
There are now myriad services FoundCare provides, including pediatric, adult and geriatric primary care; chronic disease management; behavioral health services; dentistry; laboratory services; X-rays; women’s health services; social services; and an on-site pharmacy. It continues to be a lifeline for patients like Brenda August.
“If community health centers like FoundCare did not exist, patients would turn to hospitals, urgent care facilities and minuteclinics, which provide quick diagnoses at a high cost; or they would go without accessing care altogether,” Irizarry said. “Primary care facilities like FoundCare provide health promotion, disease prevention, health maintenance, counseling, patient education, and diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses. Non-urgent emergency department visits only result in excessive health care spending and unnecessary testing and treatment.”
