our minds overly occupied). Floaters are given earplugs, and there are no lights in the pods. Participants float in 10 inches of water set to the temperature of the surface area of the body’s skin (93.5 degrees Fahrenheit). With all distractions ostensibly eliminated, the 45- to 120-minute session is, in Nuttle’s words, “a massage for your mind and a vacation from your body.”
Explaining why floating has caught on only in the past 20 years, Nuttle added, “A lot of the trends in the ‘70s and ‘80s were more around the aesthetic goal of physical fitness— a man working out to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. If you were female, you were doing aerobics to look like Jane Fonda. Slowly but surely, as the field has grown in popularity, there’s been more of a focus on the mental side of things. You’re now more likely to say, ‘I go to the gym to deal with my depression or anxiety.’ Given that this health trend has gone to the mental, it explains the growing popularity to floating, because of the mental health benefits.”
The benefits of floating are indeed myriad, and include inflammation reduction, pain relief, improved sleep quality, mood enhancement, healthier skin, and reduction of stress, depression and PTSD symptoms. “It induces a meditative state, which makes meditation a lot easier for a lot of people,” Nuttle said. “It can help with orthopedic issues. On top of that, it’s also just a super-relaxing, fun, wonderful thing. It’s really a unique experience.” Floaters are likely to experience an uplift from a single session, but for maximum efficacy, Nuttle recommends regular sessions as part of one’s self-care routine.
