In her classic 1880 book Across Patagonia, Lady Florence Dixie wrote that when she decided to travel to Patagonia her friends back in England thought she had gone mad. But tourism worldwide has evolved in a big way since Dixie made her journey. Today, its definitely not considered madness to go on a long trek in wild Patagonia. Indeed, the cliché image of a tourist lying on the beach drinking piña coladas nowadays must make room for a new kind of a tourist-travelers with the soul of explorers seeking to connect with the places they visit by getting involved with their culture and immersing in nature. Its a type of travel that requires more effort and a greater spirit of adventure, but whose rewards are unmatched.

Reasons to fall in love with Patagonia abound, starting with its stunning, pristine landscapes. Mountains, steppes, forests, glaciers, rivers, lakes, and fjords dominate this region, where there is still unexplored territory and visitors can look 360 degrees and see endless nature. Further yet, history, full of adventures and legends, turns the spectacular scenery into an epic. From indigenous peoples to colonizers from distant lands, the people who have inhabited this region, the “Patagones,” have formed a unique culture deeply imprinted by their surroundings.

But Patagon Journal is more than a travel magazine, and it is more than a sort of "Patagonia Geographic," this is also a publication for the aficionado who has had the good fortune to get to know Patagonia and like many came away forever affected by its extraordinary character and beauty. Its for people who enjoy the outdoors: fly fishermen, trekkers, climbers, snowboarders, skiers, kayakers, cyclists and others who appreciate the amazing opportunities this region has to offer them in the practice of their sport. Most of all, this magazine is about enjoying and protecting the last, large wild places left on a planet in ecological crisis. Patagonia in particular.

En su obra clásica del año 1880 'A través de la Patagonia', Lady Florence Dixie reveló que cuando decidió visitar la Patagonia, sus amigos en Inglaterra pensaron que se había vuelto loca; pero el turismo mundial ha cambiado bastante desde que Dixie viajó. Hoy en día no se considera una locura una larga caminata por la Patagonia Silvestre. La imagen cliché del turista recostado en la playa tomando piñas coladas ha ido cambiando a un viajero con alma de explorador, que busca relacionarse con los lugares que visita, involucrándose con la cultura y estando en contacto con la naturaleza. Es una forma de turismo que requiere más esfuerzo y mayor espíritu de aventura, pero cuyos resultados son incomparables.

Razones para encantarse con estas tierras sobran, partiendo por sus imponentes paisajes prácticamente inalterados por el hombre. Montañas, estepas, bosques, glaciares, ríos, lagos, fiordos se concentran en este lugar, donde todavía se encuentran territorios inexplorados y el visitante puede mirar en 360º y ver sólo naturaleza. Su historia, llena de aventuras y leyendas, convierte sus paisajes de espectaculares a épicos. Desde los indígenas a los colonizadores, sus habitantes han formado una cultura única profundamente marcada por su ambiente.

The author of the cover story, Jack Miller, first arrived to Patagonia in 1963 to try to surmount then-unclimbed Cuernos Principal in Paine. The five months he spent in the region established a fascination for Patagonia that has him coming back nearly every year. A former trip leader for Mountain Travel, Jack is based in Colorado and has written for National Geographic, GEO and American Alpine Journal.

Executive editor of Patagon Journal, Jimmy Langman grew up in the U.S. but has been based for most of the past decade in Chile working as a foreign correspondent for Newsweek magazine and several other publications in the US, UK, and Canada. A version of his feature article this issue also appeared in the international editions of Newsweek in January.

Born in Patagonia, but raised in Santiago, Evelyn Pfeiffer, a deputy editor for Patagon Journal, also writes regularly about travel and science for the Santiago newspaper La Tercera. In 2009, she authored a book for Chile’s National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) about the history of Torres del Paine National Park.

Chilean biologist Hector Kol is an aquaculture consultant for small fisherman organizations and environmental groups such as Oceana and the Pumalin Foundation.

Veteran U.S. journalist Tim Vandenack formerly lived in Santiago, Chile, where he met his future wife and worked as a freelance journalist for Christian Science Monitor and South Florida Sun-Sentinel. He currently is a staff reporter at The Elkhart Truth newspaper in Indiana.

of mountains, the Cordillera Sarmiento, has repelled every explorer since the first, Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa. He was sent, in 1581 with 24 ships and 2,500 men under mandate from the King of Spain to colonize the region near the Strait of Magellan. Storms, mutiny and starvation devastated his expedition and he abandoned the region in one surviving ship and a skeleton crew of men. Annual rainfall can only be guessed at: meteorologists put it at more than seven meters-over 300

inches. Due to its perpetual blanket of cloud, this superb mountain range, some 40 miles long and 20 wide, had never been described, nor accurately mapped. Only rarely is it ever seen. During my thousand days over the past 25 years in Patagonia, I had glimpsed the peaks only twice.

My first view of that mysterious ice-covered range was in 1974, from the summit of Gran Campo Nevado, a high peak in the same archipelago 60 miles to the south. I was compelled to learn more, but in the 400 years since Sarmiento, little had been written, only brief comment from passing explorers. The U.S. Air Force managed to take some aerial photographs of the range in 1945, which were useful for tracing the coastline, but provided little data inland. NASA satellites never got a clear shot of it, nor

Locals had told me that the Sarmiento’s peaks can be seen from a point along one of Patagonia’s major roads, some 80 miles distant, but although I drove it dozens of times over several years, I saw nothing but the perennial clouds. Then on a rare day in February 1990, the peaks dawned clear. I dropped everything, found a small airplane and pilot for hire, and flew right among my mysterious giants. The flight revealed a range of peaks much grander than I had imagined, a massif that would rank in scale with the French Alps or large parts of Alaska’s Coastal Range. Our flight path, along both sides of the massif, resulted in complete panoramas, the first taken of the range at close hand. My

photographs, most likely the first taken of the range at close hand, could spark the excitement and raise support for a full-on expedition. I wanted to see more, and to show this place to the rest of the world.

After two years of preparation, and very useful funding from National Geographic, we´re finally here.

taineers, and came equipped with skis and the best coldweather gear. But on arrival we found something very wrong with the picture: no snow! I had expected the snow to be a meter or two deep on the coast, and the bogs, if not the bays themselves, to be frozen.

But snowline lies a thousand meters above us, and we are splashing around in marshes and forests of sodden mosses.

My mates scampered ashore today untroubled by such mundane concerns: the bizarre, primeval splendor of the place fascinated them.

Unmindful of the steady rain, Gordon walked bare-headed, circling among towering moss-covered trees, lifting his knees high in the springy mosses of the forest floor. “This is like the Lost World,” he said. “I’d expect to see dinosaurs here.”

When seeking partners for this trip I met dozens of strong, skilled mountaineers who’d love to tackle a range of unclimbed summits. However, I insisted on one uncommon but essential quality: the willingness to withstand extremely wet, cold conditions. That’s no problem for Pete or Phillip. Both are strong, top-level climbers and kayakers, level-headed, always good humored, whatever the weather. Although born far apart--Phillip in South Africa, Pete in Colorado- they could have been brothers, and as a rope team of two have done many of the classic extreme rock climbs of dryer Patagonia. Gordon is a family man, and not especially hardy, but as a globe-trotting magazine photographer has traveled in extreme climates. I expect he’ll adapt to this one. His durability on this trip comes not from physical toughness but his fierce drive to publish in a major magazine. Tyler, the youngest and greenest hadn’t seen much

geography other than the open seas of the North Atlantic; as a commercial fisherman and also a backcountry skier he’s seen plenty of rough weather. Oddly, he’s never climbed a high mountain. Rob, our “rich kid” grew with all the advantages, traveled everywhere had professional climbing guides as teachers.

He can handle rough weather or hardship, as long as there’s a party at the end of the day. Rob’s most essential piece of expedition gear is his boom box.

We all met in Punta Arenas, a major port town on Chile’s Strait of Magellan. There we bought groceries for six weeks and added an outboard motor, short wave radio and a generator to our heap of equipment. We then trucked it the 150 miles to Puerto Natales, the small, colorful fishing port perched on the saltwater Golf of Montt where we boarded the “Trinidad” en route to the Cordillera Sarmiento.

On the second day, after the boat departs, alone in this vast wilderness, we built a sturdy platform and atop that erect our tent, one designed for Antarctic conditions. It will stand up to the wind. The following day, we inflated our 16 foot Zodiac boat, always seaworthy for these gnarly fjord waters, and headed out to reconnoiter down coast to find routes to the high peaks. At the head of this bay, three immense glaciers stream off of high ice fields to reach tidewater here. Our rubber bow pushed chunks of ice aside, and these increased in size as we plowed ahead. We neared the ice fronts, sheer cliffs towering a hundred feet above waterline.

We deposited Gordon on a steep rock outcrop for photographs, and Phillip and I paddled the boat closer. Now, like burglars in a cathedral, we spoke in whispers. The cracking and moaning of ice hinted that the glacier would someday

The next day, we begin exploring routes to the high peaks. Photographs show three feasible approaches from the coast through steep and complicated terrain to the icefields high above us. Exploring on foot, we find that one ridge is cut by a glacial canyon, another dead-ends in a massive, heavily crevassed icefall. The third pans out, although our route winds tortuously through forest, thicket, bogs and cliffs, and has to be blazed every few yards. We label it “No Problema Ridge.”

Soon, I stand atop the mountain I had come to know from my hours of pouring over air photos as “The South Face,” probably the second highest peak in the range.

dome from where I had first glimpsed the Cordillera Sarmiento 18 years ago. Far to the east, beyond the fjords and the inland sea of Almirante Montt, I can make out the coast where Puerto Natales lies, and the pampas begin.

I swing my gaze off to the Darwin Range of Tierra del Fuego, some 250 miles distant, peaks I’d explored in other years. My personal history of the past three decades could be summed up as a list of summits in this wild, weather-beaten country that I seem destined to explore.

Belayed by Phillip on the rope, I wiggle on my belly to peer over our summit snow cornice, and in a heart-stopping moment I realize I am overhanging the 1500-foot sheer rock face of our peak. A higher summit, labeled “6600” on provisional maps as an estimate of its height (we found it to be closer to 7000 feet) seems just beyond arm’s reach. But I can see no clear route to it from here through the snarl of tumbling ice falls. Our most fervent goal will have to wait for a different approach on a day with more time. We use the rest of today romping across the ice field on skis, climbing up nearby summits, the cone-shaped “Gremlin’s Cap, then “Elephant Ears”— which we name for the layered sheets of rime ice plastered to its summit, and finally “Jaco,” in gratitude for this fortuitous break in the weather.

As the sun sets, we reluctantly point our skis toward camp, and then

enjoy the run of a lifetime, carving wide turns along our route of flags in the steep glacier ice. At the base of our final and steepest slope we gather to watch Tyler masterfully carving tight, graceful turns through the crevasses.

The next day, the wind begins shaking our tent at 2 AM, but the sky is clear. At dawn we are again out and moving. Gordon and I ski over the ridge above camp to explore the route to Peak 66. The others ski far to the west and eventually climb two prominent peaks arising out of Taraba Sound and bordering our range to the west. They have now made a complete crossing of the northern icefield and secured valuable survey and photographs.

Gordon and I are buffeted by winds, but ski to a point from which we can trace out the entire route to the summit of Peak 66. The final 300 feet will be steep climbing, but it is well within our grasp. All we need is one more decent day. But the “saucer clouds” (cumulus lenticularus) are stacking up in piles of three and four. On North American mountains, they are always a sign of impending storm. That evening outside camp my balaclava is torn off my head by the wind, and as I search for it a sleeping bag which Pete has been drying flies past. Luckily it catches on a rock and hangs, lunging like a crazed animal to get free until we tackle it.

For the next three days we lie in camp, three of us pinned down in the wildly snapping tent, the others in their quiet but dripping snow cave. The constant high winds are punctuated by gusts of alarming

On the fourth day of storm, I decide two men should try descending to base camp and attempt radio contact with the captain to delay our scheduled pick-up, and then bring back more food.

This would let us wait out the storm and have a better chance at climbing Peak 66 and survey more of the northern ice field.

While Phillip is rolling up the tent, an extra-strong gust tears it right out of his hands, and in an instant it disappears straight up over the ridge. Pete runs to find it, and returns after just a few minutes, visibly shaken. While climbing a gully up to the ridge, a gust had yanked him out of the deep snow and thrown him some 30 feet uphill, unnerving for anyone, all the more for a man of 220 pounds. The tent sailed up and over the ridge, and could have flown miles. We never found it. Later, we chip and shovel out the snow cave until there is room for the three of us who now lack a tent. We return to waiting.

After eighteen days on this journey, all we can do is dig out the snow drift as it accumulates in our cave entrance. We set a strict schedule of watches: every two hours one of us shovels the entrance free. Rob, on his watch, didn’t take this seriously and dozed off. Later in the night, Tyler awoke—to this day he doesn’t know why--and noticed the stuffy air. He called to Rob. He could not rouse any of us, very likely in the early stages of hypoxia. Tyler, himself in a weak state, managed to shed his bag and crawl to the entrance. There he found it frozen shut. Summing extra strength he broke the seal of ice, falling and gasping out into the storm, saving us all.

Descent On the twentieth day, we must descend to base to meet the ship captain to take us out. Gordon comments that “the wind no longer comes down like freight trains.” “Yeah,” chuckles ,Phillip, “It’s down to normal freeway traffic.” But in the time it takes us to break camp, dig skis and equipment out of snow drifts and pack our loads, the wind returns to howling levels. We follow the ridge a half mile before we can descend. It’s a hellish hour. We are all spun around or simply knocked flat. I try crawling on hands and knees, but at ground level visibility is zero because of the blowing snow.

Once past the high point of the ridge, the wind is still strong enough to push us around, yet we can see the fjord far below. It’s as calm as glass, and—to add to the irony, the sun breaks through to the south and east. It’s a phenomenon we’ve seen many times. This range obviously cooks up its own weather.

I see whitecaps building on the fjord below and call for one man to descend directly with me to launch the inflatable boat for base camp.

We have to meet the ‘Trinidad’! Pete grumpily volunteers and we descend in the rising storm to shore. By the time the boat is ready to go, the others appear, the thought of a drier camp blinding them to the dangers of heavy seas. Happily, the motor roars at the first pull and we enter the open fjord.

We had done what we’d set out to do: explore an unknown piece of the earth and acquire the photographs and map data for showing it to the rest of the world. But our accomplishments were secondary to the doing of it.

The immersion in those pristine forests, the ice-littered fjords, those sunlit summits, the battering of winds and of waves-some moments sublime, some full of desperation-will never be forgotten. In those moments we were fully alive, and that’s the best I can ever hope for.

hree years ago, the Baker River in Aysen Patagonia suddenly tripled in size, causing a virtual river tsunami. In less than 48 hours, roads, bridges, and farms were severely damaged and dozens of livestock drowned. Residents were in disbelief. Jonathan Leidich, an American whose company regularly leads tourists on treks up to nearby glaciers, hiked to the Colonia Glacier at the eastern flank of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field and discovered the source of the mysterious flood: Lake Cachet 2 had vanished. This enormous, two-squaremile glacial lake had emptied its 200 million cubic meters of water in just a matter of hours.

What happened? Glaciologists say it was yet another “glacial lake outburst flood,” or GLOF. An increasing rate of melting at the Colonia Glacier swelled the lake so much so that the resulting water pressure gradually forced the creation of a tunnel beneath the surface of the adjacent ice and drained the lake. Since Cachet 2 emptied in 2008, the lake has “disappeared” seven more times.

Such GLOFs don’t necessarily arise because of climate change; indeed, some four decades ago a GLOF occurred on the Baker River. But a clear warming trend over the past decade has taken its toll on the world’s glaciers, and it is widely agreed that climate change is dramatically increasing the frequency and intensity of GLOFs. Last year, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released a report on mountain glaciers at the climate-change talks in Cancún, Mexico, stating that glaciers on Argentine and Chilean Patagonia are “losing mass faster and for longer than glaciers in other parts of the world.” “Accumulation of science shows us a clear general trend of melting glaciers linked to a warming climate,” said UNEP executive director Achim Steiner.

Glaciers on the Chilean side of Patagonia account for more than 90% of the Patagonian region’s ice fields. Those fields consist of two non-contiguous sheets—the Northern Patagonian Ice Field, which includes Cachet 2, and the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the world’s third-largest continental ice sheet after those of Antarctica and Greenland.

Data show that since 1995, the rate of thinning has more than doubled. Studies from NASA show that the Patagonian Ice Fields, which extend some 6,600 square miles altogether (17,000 square km), account for about 9 percent of annual global sealevel change from mountain glaciers.

Skeptics of global warming point to some Patagonia glaciers that remain stable, or that are even growing, such as Argentina’s Perito Moreno Glacier. But Gino Casassa, director of Glacier and Climate Change Research at the Valdivia, Chile–based Center for Scientific Studies, said that global warming can also lead to more rain, or snow in the case of regions such as Patagonia.

Los residentes no daban crédito al fenómeno. Jonathan Leidich, un estadounidense cuya empresa realiza recorridos turísticos por los glaciares vecinos, escaló el glaciar Colonia, en el margen oriental del Campo de Hielo Patagónico Norte y descubrió la causa de la misteriosa inundación: el lago Cachet 2 había desaparecido. El enorme lago glaciar de 3 kilómetros cuadrados había vertido sus 200 millones de metros cúbicos de agua en cuestión de unas pocas horas.

Casassa says in part Patagonian glaciers are more susceptible to global warming because they are dominated by so-called “calving glaciers,” which release icebergs into lakes or the sea. There are also other climate change effects that intensify melting, such as elevation feedback. “As a glacier thins, the [upper edge retreats to lower elevations]—often in Patagonia by about five meters [16 feet] per year,” he notes. “As that happens, atmospheric temperatures get warmer because you are at a lower elevation.

This can be important in speeding up the melting of a glacier.”

The GLOFs are not just happening at an increasing rate in Patagonia, but worldwide in countries that are home to mountain glaciers. In April of last year, a huge slab of ice the size of several football fields broke off a mountain glacier and plunged into a central Peru lake creating a tsunami-like wave at least 76 feet high that flooded four towns, destroyed at least 50 homes, and severely damaged a water plant serving a town of 60,000 people.

According to NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, this accident came on the heels of the warmest summer season on record in the Southern Hemisphere.

Compared with other countries, Peru is unusually well prepared to cope with sudden lake floods, experts say. The Peruvian Andes mountain chain has witnessed more than 30 glacial floods in the past, killing nearly 6,000 people altogether since 1941. As a result, Peruvian governments have invested millions in working to drain or dam glacial lakes to lessen the hazardous risks.

In addition to flooding, the GLOFs transport tremendous amounts of sediment, which not only contribute to higher flood levels but reduce the life span of the dam downstream by accumulating sediment in the reservoir and potentially damaging the turbines.

Brian Reid, a limnologist with the Coyhaique-based Centro de Investigacion en Ecosistemas de la Patagonia (CIEP), is conducting regular research on the Baker River.

Reid said that when a GLOF occurs the river not only increases greatly in size but it contains the maximum amount of sediment the river can hold. “The idea of building a major dam on one of the most unstable rivers on the planet seems crazy to me. For the amount of risk involved to this dams project from these GLOFs, the company’s responses in the environmental evaluation process have been completely irresponsible.”

Despite the widely shared concerns by scientists over GLOFrisks associated with the proposed dams, the Aysen Regional Environmental Commission in November of last year accepted the company’s views regarding GLOFs and it was no longer an issue in the evaluation process when the project was approved in May. For his part, Leidich has met with Chilean senators, government ministers, and others to seek financing for protection measures for ranchers and others living along the Baker. His efforts led to the creation of an early-warning system called the Sentinel Project in October 2008. High-frequency radios, powered by solar panels and batteries, were distributed to most families in the flood zone so that they can receive warnings. But Leidich says long-term the program will not work the way it needs to until it receives adequate annual funding.

Meantime, Leidich calls HidroAysen a “blasphemy.” The companies claim their dams with an early warning system in place can handle a GLOF of up to 7700 cubic meters per second of water, which is the most their predictions say they will have to deal with in the future. But Leidich asks: “What it will mean to the people living in Tortel and all along the river when the dam has to release that amount of water?

The answer: everyone downstream is wiped out.”

Adicionalmente a las inundaciones, estos eventos transportan grandes cantidades de sedimento, que no sólo contribuyen a aumentar los niveles de inundación sino que además reducen la duración de la vida de la represa, al acumular sedimento en la reserva y potencialmente dañar las turbinas.

A pesar de las preocupaciones ampliamente compartidas de los científicos acerca de los riesgos de GLOF asociados con las represas propuestas, la Comisión Regional Ambiental de Aysén aceptó en noviembre de 2010 el punto de vista de la compañía acerca de los GLOF y ya no fue un tema en el proceso de evaluación cuando el proyecto fue aprobado en mayo.

Por su parte, Leidich se ha reunido con senadores chilenos, ministros de gobierno y otros para buscar financiamiento para medidas de protección para campesinos y otros que viven cerca del Baker. Sus esfuerzos llevaron a la creación de un sistema de alerta temprana, llamado Proyecto Centinela, en octubre de 2008. Radios de alta frecuencia, que funcionan a través de paneles solares y baterías, se distribuyeron a la mayoría de las familias de la zona de inundación, para que pudieran recibir alertas. Pero Leidich dice que a largo plazo este programa no va a funcionar como debe, a no ser que reciba un financiamiento anual adecuado.

Mientras tanto, Leidich llama a HidroAysén una “blasfemia”. Las compañías dicen que con un sistema de alerta temprana funcionando, pueden soportar un GLOF de hasta 7700 metros cúbicos de agua por segundo, que es lo máximo que sus predicciones auguran que van a tener que enfrentar en el futuro. Over the years, as a journalist I have interviewed him on several occasions and most recently was able to spend some time with him at his offices in Puerto Varas. Time helps take an accurate measure of a man: Tompkins has been refreshingly consistent in his commitment to wildlands protection. History depends upon who tells the story, but I wager that future genera-

tions will look back with enormous gratitude for Tompkins’ work trying to save some of the planet’s last large, pristine nature areas. Excerpts from Patagon Journal’s exclusive interview with Doug Tompkins: Langman: In Chile, you are oft criticized, in particular by ex-Chilean President Eduardo Frei, for harming economic development by preserving too much land as parks -Tompkins: I think maybe that’s changing now. We don’t have enough parks and biodiversity is in crisis. I think its really a question of which side of the coin you’re looking at. And I see Chile as overdeveloped. I think it’s not healthy for private individuals or foundations or companies to own a lot of land. I’d like to see land spread out in its ownership, and the way to spread it out best is through

In our particular case, I think that we see ourselves as sort of provisional stewards. It’s a joke to think you own it forever. You’re just transient in this world; we’re all just brief tenants.

-What brought you to Patagonia?

-I came here the first time in 1961. So I knew this part of the world really well. I knew I wanted to live outside a big urban area like San Francisco. Once I got free of business, I also wanted to get a farm. I looked around and this is a nice part of the world.

And I have a lot of friends here from all my years of climbing here.

I’m also a forestry activist, and in the late 1980s, Yvon Chouinard, Alan Weeden and myself helped buy the Cani forest near Pucón.

That kind of got my feet wet [with land conservation], and then somebody told us about a farm in Riñihue, and that was attached to another piece of land Rick Klein told us about at Cahuelmo, and we went down to take a look at it, and one thing led to another.

-What kind of things do you farm?

-What I’m really interested in is highly diverse farms versus the monoculture, industrial agriculture type. Even though some of our farms are big, we break them down into smaller farms. Orchards in one section. Organic management. Building top soil. If I just had more time, if I had another lifetime, then I would put it 100 percent into farming. Because I just think that if the world is going to get itself out of this whole eco-social crisis, that if agriculture can´t be turned around there is no hope. It has the biggest impact on the landscapes, water and climate. We need a whole new model of agriculture and food production.

A group of visionary Magellanicos finally insisted in protecting this place for tourism and in 1959 the government accepted a proposal to create Lake Grey Tourism Park, which was allotted just 5,000 hectares. Shortly afterward it changed its name to Torres del Paine National Park and in 1979 it were granted the 242,242 hectares that it has today.

In 1975, Chile’s national forest service (CONAF) was put in charge of the administration of the park and a group of young people, all under 25, had the task to set up and protect every corner of the park. It was a time when there were no lights, roads, and bridges. Resources to do the job was just as scarce: they were provided with merely simple compasses, wooly ponchos and Wellington boots to carry out their task.

A partir de 1975 la Corporación Nacional Forestal (CONAF) quedó a cargo de la administración y un grupo de jóvenes, todos menores de 25, tuvo la tarea de recorrer, conocer y proteger cada rincón del Parque. Era una época en que no había luz, caminos, puentes, ni mucho menos el equipamiento y tecnología de montaña que facilitase el viaje. Provistos de simples brújulas, ponchos de lana y botas de goma, comenzaron su aventura.

René Cifuentes, el primer administrador, explica que a los visitantes les costaba comprender el objetivo de tener un Parque Nacional. “Las personas

We were very young, and didn’t have a lot of credibility. In Puerto Natales, people were living a different reality and it was very difficult for them to understand.

For them, we were throwing money down the sink.Land to have nothing in it? What was the point of that?”

Despite their limiting circumstances, the early park guardians had a crucial role in establishing the park much the way we see it today, including naming several areas in the park and helping to restore the fauna and ecosystems. In Torres del Paine, with their help, we have increased the wildlife population of pumas, condors, huemuls, guanacos, foxes and ñandus, among other species. We have also seen a change in the behavior of the animals facing the visitors; instead of their prior fear of illegal hunters they are now largely indifferent to human presence.

The climber John Garner identified a possible path and invited park ranger Neftali Zambrano to explore the area. In March 1976, after crossing a lengthy swamp, rivers and a snow-covered rock slope, they reached the highest point of what is today known as the Paine Circuit, which at 1,241 meters above sea level offers an

Estos hombres cumplieron un rol principal en la formación del Parque tal como lo vemos hoy en día, como por ejemplo en la recuperación de fauna y ecosistemas. Han aumentado las poblaciones de pumas, cóndores, huemules, guanacos, zorros y ñandúes, entre otros, y ha cambiado la conducta de los animales frente a los visitantes: de temerosos ante la caza ilegal a indiferentes ante la presencia humana.

La creación de los senderos Entre el personal de CONAF ya circulaba la idea de diseñar un circuito que bordeara el macizo del Paine. Existían huellas y algunos puestos instalados por los ganaderos, pero faltaba unir el sector entre los actuales campamentos Los Perros y Grey.

El escalador John Garner había identificado un posible paso y decidió invitar al guardaparque Neftalí Zambrano para explorar la zona. Neftali Zambrano remembers: “I didn’t have the proper gear on. I was wearing low shoes, jeans, a jacket and a beret. John Garner made steps with his tracks for me to keep going forward, because the soles of my shoes were too worn out and I kept slipping. My jeans froze and my calves were all scratched. I was like the guinea pig, because I was a simple Chilean without the mountain training and the proper gear on, so if I made it … it meant the pass was feasible.”

A second group composed of Oscar Guineo, Jose Alarcon and Garner himself had the mission to start marking the route. Their task was to get familiar with the terrain; walk, ride and mark the paths, establish the hiking times and the difficulty as well as finding the most attractive routes for visitors.

This is how the 92.3 kilometer Paine Circuit was born, also known as the “O” trail. Years later, the so called “W” circuit was created spontaneously from hikers as a route for visiting the most popular areas of the park in fewer days. The two of these circuits have become the most heralded trekking routes in Patagonia.

Today, Torres del Paine’s fame is global and undoubtedly this national park has turned into one of the great landmarks of Patagonia. There is still a lot to discover in Torres del Paine, however. After millions of years of formation, more than 9,000 years showing itself to mankind, 130 years opening its incredible landscapes to tourists, and half a century as a national park preserving the land for future generations, the beauty and wonders of its landscape remain endless and its history has only just begun.

La tarea de ellos era conocer al máximo el terreno, viendo los mejores lugares y las rutas más atractivas para visitantes. Tuvieron que conocer los senderos, caminarlos, cabalgarlos, marcarlos, establecer las horas de caminata y la dificultad, y buscar los lugares con las mejores vistas.

De esta forma nació el Circuito Paine, también conocido como “O”, con 93,2 kilómetros de recorrido y, años más tarde, surgió en forma espontánea por parte de los mismos caminantes, la llamada “W” como una variante para recorrer los grandes hitos en menos días. With this detection, in less than a year, the disease had appeared 2,200 kilometers to the south of its apparent origin in the Chauques Islands of the Los Lagos region.

Neither SERNAPESCA nor the salmon industry know exactly when or how the disease entered the country. When they announced the presence of the ISA virus in Caleta Delano, SERNAPESCA declared that Marine Harvest’s salmon had entered Magallanes contaminated in 2006. Then, a day later, the regional head of the Aquaculture Unit of SERNAPESCA, Alicia Gallardo, stated that these salmon had actually entered the area infected as far back as 2005.

Meantime, in response to these allegations from the government, Marine Harvest maintained the fish had entered their facility healthy but that somehow became infected on site.

The origin of the disease remains unknown in Chile. It has been stated by some, principally

by SERNAPESCA, that there is no vertical transmission of this virus, from parents to offspring. But in 2007 scientific evidence arising from outbreaks of the disease in Norway do confirm there is a vertical transmission of the disease.

Salmon in Chile are an introduced species that are farmed from eggs. In salmon farms, only eggs, and not grown fish, are cultivated. The evidence is thus strikingly clear that it’s the imported eggs which are the origins of the disease: in Chile, there is no other possibility of

transmission, neither the presence of the pathogen on the surface of cells or intercellular.

Recent declarations by Victor Hugo Puchi, owner of Aqua Chile, the largest Chilean-owned salmon company, are totally correct in asserting that “Chile cannot continue to import diseases.”

His opinion is backed up by scientist Sandra Bravo of Austral University, who in a recent seminar stated that 70 percent of the salmon eggs that are imported are invalid for the development of smolts, or young fish, as a result of diseases carried from their distinctive origins.

A majority of experts in Chile do agree, however, that the arrival and spread of the virus in Chile was due to lack of sanitary control. Diseases in farmed fish are transmitted when the fish are stressed and, in particular, when the cages are too close to each other. In such sites, there is often an excessive, overpopulation of fish. In its recent heyday, the Chilean salmon industry produced up to 40 kilograms of salmon per cubic meter of water, which stands in stark contrast to the SERNAPESCArecommended limit of 15 kilograms (a figure which the majority of the companies declared in their environmental permits).

Chile is not prepared to regulate intensive salmon farming. For two decades, sites have been occupied for fish farm cages without knowing the capacity of the aquatic environment to absorb, recycle and decompose the thousands of tons of organic material generated by salmon centers every year. This also includes unknown quantities of chemical products that are used without limit or regulation.

En menos de un año, la enfermedad se manifestaba a 2.200 kilómetros al sur de su aparente origen en las Islas Chauques (X Región).

Ni SERNAPESCA ni la propia Industria Salmonera saben cuándo ni cómo esta enfermedad ingresó al país. Al anunciar la presencia del virus ISA en “Caleta Délano”, SERNAPESCA de Magallanes declaró que los salmones de Marine Harvest habían ingresado ya contagiados a este centro en el año 2006.

Sin embargo, la Jefa de la Unidad de Acuicultura de SERNAPESCA, Alicia Gallardo, señaló sólo 24 horas después que estos salmones habían ingresado enfermos en el año 2005. Y en respuesta a estas aseveraciones, la empresa Marine Harvest publicó un comunicado donde se indicaba que los peces habían ingresado sanos y que se habían contagiado in situ.

La aparición del ISA en Puerto Natales también permitió revelar otras irregularidades que frecuentemente comete la Industria Salmonera en Chile.

El Centro “Caleta Délano” de ACUIMAG ocupaba una superficie 30 veces mayor que la autorizada y había desplegado en tierra estructuras sin autorización de construcción. Todo ello delante de la Armada de Chile y del propio SERNAPESCA-Magallanes, incapaz de detectar que un centro era 30 veces mayor que lo permitido.

Por unos dos años, ACUIMAG ocupó agua de manera ilegal y por otros 5 años mantuvo estructuras ilegales en tierra, sin que servicio

público alguno lo detectara o impidiera. Los errores cometidos por SERNAPESCA-Magallanes en este caso, motivaron una denuncia del Sindicato de Tripulantes de Punta Arenas ante la Contraloría Regional de Magallanes, investigación que sigue en curso.

Tampoco se conoce el origen de esta enfermedad en Chile. Reiteradamente se ha declarado que no se puede demostrar la transmisión “vertical” del virus ISA, es decir, de padres (reproductores) a hijos (ovas). Sin embargo, las evidencias científicas surgidas desde el año 2007 en relación al origen de la enfermedad en distintos brotes en Noruega, comprobarían la transmisión vertical de la enfermedad.

En Chile el salmón es una especie introducida que se cultiva a partir de ovas. No se importan alevines o smolts para ser cultivados.

La evidencia es rotunda respecto del origen de la enfermedad: en Chile no hay otra posibilidad de transmisión, ya sea por la presencia del patógeno en la superficie de la célula o de modo intracelular.

Las recientes declaraciones de Víctor Hugo Puchi, el principal accionista de AQUACHILE (la mayor salmonera de capitales chilenos) son totalmente acertadas cuando señala que “Chile no puede seguir importando enfermedades”. Opinión ratificada por la exposición de la M. Sc. de la Universidad Austral, Sandro Bravo, en un seminario donde la investigadora señaló que un 70% de las ovas de salmónidos importados son inviables para el desarrollo de smolts, como resultado de las enfermedades que éstas portan desde sus distintos orígenes.

Por otra parte, la mayoría de los expertos aseguran que la llegada del virus fue por falta de control sanitario. Las enfermedades en

Migration toward Patagonia Now, the problem is going further south. A world-renowned touristic zone such as Puerto Natales, with more than 100,000 visitors annually, at present must have its Ultima Esperanza Bay declared a “vigilance zone” for the virus. Under this designation, the region’s fjords fed by glaciers, where tourists go for pristine landscapes, can currently only be visited, theoretically, after disinfection for products deemed toxic to the marine environment, which is required by SERNAPESCA in order to avoid a new spread of a virus.

In the Aysen region, fishing and environmental authorities have already approved the installation of 500 salmon farming centers. There are 1500 centers authorized in the Magallanes region. Numerous other salmon farming centers are on the wait-

ing list in Aysen and Magallanes.

All of this without any requirement for environmental impact studies nor the most minimal sanitary measures to prevent the ISA virus from expanding into a

region that is prized by people the world over.

Fishermen, local business leaders, students and citizen organizations in Puerto Natales have formed “Patagonia Without Salmon Farms,” a citizens group which is pressuring the government to establish a moratorium on salmon farming in Magallanes and a quarantine on salmon centers already in the Ultima Esperanza Bay. Tourism is an economic sector with tremendous growth potential for Patagonia, especially ecotourism. Governments have praised and defended it because it leaves income, creates jobs and benefits all sectors of the population. Magallanes and Aysen are a faithful reflection of this tendency, ecotourists from around the globe visit every year to enjoy its scenic beauty. Here, tourism and environmental protection must be priority when considering any salmon farming expansion.

Se han ocupado sitios durantes dos décadas para la operación de balsas-jaulas salmoneras sin conocer la capacidad del medio acuático para absorber, reciclar o descomponer miles de toneladas de materia orgánica que generan los centros salmoneros cada año, así como cantidades desconocidas de toda suerte de productos químicos que se usan sin límite ni fiscalización en la salmonicultura.

Hoy, la mayoría de borde costero donde se desarrolla la acuicultura del salmón en Chile está contaminado química y biológicamente. Los estudios de capacidad de carga debieron hacerse antes de instalarse las balsasjaulas y no después.

Migración hacia la Patagonia El problema se está extendiendo hacia el sur. Una zona eminentemente turística como lo es Puerto Natales, con más de 100 mil visitantes cada año, tiene el Seno de Última Esperanza comprendido en una Zona de Vigilancia por el virus.

Los fiordos alimentados por glaciares, donde acuden los turistas en busca de ambientes prístinos, sólo pueden visitarse, teóricamente, tras desinfecciones con productos tóxicos para el ambiente marino, como lo exigen las medidas sanitarias dispuestas por SERNAPESCA para evitar la dispersión de un virus que ya ha recorrido 2.400 kilómetros lineales de mar territorial chileno.

En la XI Región de Aysén, la Subsecretaría de Marina y las oficinas de evaluación ambiental han autorizado las operaciones de unos 500 centros de producción salmonera, mientras que en la XII Región de Magallanes, aunque sólo hay 50 centros salmoneros en condiciones de operar, unas 1.500 solicitudes para cultivos de salmones aguardan los permisos respectivos para iniciar sus operaciones. Todo ello, bajo las mismas paupérrimas regulaciones que posibilitaron la presencia de virus ISA en Magallanes.

Un proceso absolutamente irregular de ordenamiento territorial que titularon “Zonificación del Uso del Borde Costero” en Magallanes, garantiza que las mismas ilegalidades e insuficiencias normativas que colapsaron los ambientes marinos intervenidos por la Industria Salmonera en las X y XI Regiones, se manifiesten libremente en Magallanes ahora bajo el disfraz de la Salmonicultura 2.0.

El turismo es uno de los sectores económicos con mayor crecimiento y perspectivas a futuro, especialmente el ecoturismo. Miles de turistas de todo el mundo llegan cada año a estas tierras para contemplar sus bellezas escénicas.

Aquí turismo y ecología debe ser prioritarios antes cualquier expansión salmonera.

I leafed through a book, resting against my backpack.

My mind wandered to the dog that had relieved itself on my backpack down in Puyuhuapi, a hamlet overlooking a deep blue bay we had walked through a few hours earlier. Damn dog. I tried to convince Sandra to get up so we could continue on foot.

"You ready to move on?" No answer.

I devoured a couple rolls and a can of ham-like sandwich spread I had bought in Puyuhuapi. I watched cars come, thumb extended, and watched cars go, thumb extended. I silently noted that if we had waited back in Puyuhuapi for the bus - one of only a few that sporadically ply the roadway - we'd have transport further north. I grumbled.

I climbed a nearby hill and caught a glimpse of Puyuhuapi back down the road. I absorbed the sun, breathed in the fresh air and studied the greenery and mountains that enclosed me.

Finally a smile crossed my face.

Hell, this isn't so bad. I descended and even managed a catnap.

Then the small creaking bus I had pondered earlier rumbled toward us. Do we take it? Discard this plot to hitchhike up the roadway? I already knew the answer.

The vehicle sputtered to a stop, breaks screaming, and the door slid open. The other passengers glared at us from their seats. "All full," the driver said.

We'd most likely be camping in a random clearing on the side of the road. Maybe we'd have to fend off some wily landowner cursing us for trespassing.

More significantly, Futaleufú and bathing would have to wait.

But it no longer mattered. We may be abandoned in the wilds of Chile, I thought somewhat dramatically, but with the stove, tent and water jug, we can face anything.

Not two minutes later, a pickup approached and slowed,

heeding our extended thumbs.

I paused for a moment, noting the oily mess in the bed of the vehicle, then quickly clambered aboard. I took a spot on a wheel well. Sandra, also moving swiftly and grinning happily, settled on a log beside a large oil drum.

After about 25 miles and 90 minutes we arrived in the flyspeck town of La Junta. With the sun quickly descending, it was clear we wouldn't make Futaleufú. But we couldn't be happier. We hadn't fallen prey to public transport and we had

Descendí e incluso pensé en dormir una siesta. Entonces vi aparecer un pequeño y sonoro autobús que se dirigía hacia nosotros, el mismo que había recordado hace unos momentos. ¿Lo tomamos? ¿Descartamos este plan de hacer dedo en la carretera? Yo ya sabía la respuesta.

El vehículo comenzó a detenerse, se estremeció un poco, sonaron los frenos y la puerta se abrió ante nosotros. Los demás pasajeros nos clavaron la mirada desde sus asientos.

"Todo completo", dijo el conductor.

Lo que nos esperaba ya estaba claro. Probablemente estaríamos acampando en un claro al lado de la carretera, tal vez defendiéndonos de algún terrateniente que nos maldeciría por invadirle. Y, lo más significativo, Futaleufú y el baño tendrían que esperar Pero ya no importaba. Si lo pensaba en forma dramática, estábamos abandonados en una región virgen de Chile. Pero, con la estufa, la carpa y un jarro de agua, podíamos enfrentar cualquier cosa. Con Sandra comenzamos a caminar nuevamente. Habían transcurrido unas tres horas ya desde que comenzó esta parada obligada.

No pasaron más de dos minutos cuando una camioneta se acercó y redujo la velocidad al ver nuestros pulgares extendidos. Me detuve un momento al notar el desorden y aceite que había allá atrás, pero no lo pensamos mucho y trepamos rápidamente.

Me senté en una rueda. Sandra, con una gran sonrisa, se sentó en un leño junto a un gran tambor de aceite.

Después de unos 90 minutos, llegamos a La Junta. Nuestras prendas de vestir, manchadas durante un viaje el día anterior en la parte trasera de un camión, ahora tenían nuevas marcas de grasa y la capa de polvo sobre nuestra piel se había espesado.

El sol descendía rápidamente y era evidente que ya no podríamos llegar ese día a Futaleufú. Pero estábamos felices. No habíamos sido

"Go ahead, camp," said the short, cockeyed mechanic, clad in a greasy cap and blue jumpsuit. He gestured to an outdoor faucet beside the garage.

"There's water, and I'll leave the garage open so you can use the bathroom."

We set up our tent and feasted on a bottle of cheap Chilean wine called Black Cat and, for the umpteenth time, spaghetti cooked over the stove.

At barely 8 o'clock the next morning we ambled to the Carretera Austral. The headlights of a pickup cutting through the early-morning fog approached.

Our thumbs instinctively shot out. The truck slowed and we were bound for Futaleufú.

In Santa Lucía, 45 miles to the north, we waited nearly seven hours for a ride to Futaleufú, still 55 miles away. But by then I was a patient old hand.

We ate grapes, slumbered in the sun, swapped stories with other travelers and watched several horses released from their pen for some reason gallop around town. Then a pickup slowed and we hopped aboard.

The sun still glimmered when we arrived in Futaleufú, high up in the Andes near the Argentine border, and we quickly made it to the Espolón River. We gulped mouthfuls of the river, and before the sun had set, our bodies were now clean, our spirits sparkling.

Aproximadamente a las 8 de la mañana siguiente regresamos a la Carretera Austral. Los faros de una camioneta cortando a través de la niebla mañanera comenzaron a

acercarse. Instintivamente nuestros pulgares se dispararon. La camioneta frenó y ya nos encontrábamos camino a Futaleufú.

El sol todavía brillaba cuando llegamos a Futaleufú, cerca de la frontera argentina. Rápidamente fuimos al Río Espolón y, antes de que el sol se perdiera, nos lanzamos a sus aguas.

Sometimes they breathe so close to us we can smell the krill and plankton of their breath and they wet our cameras. They’ll disappear for a few moments but they come back quickly, curious in their encounter with this metal animal that floats in their waters, where they come to reproduce every year.

Two of them begin floating with their heads below the water, leaving a large part of their bodies exposed, in an absolutely vertical position. They’re so close we could touch them, but the captain says they’re extremely sensitive to touch and could flip our boat. Bad idea!

There’s an air of awe and respect. The boat’s motor is off, we’re in profound silence and the sea is at calm. Nothing interrupts the scene save for a few cameras with enough space on their memory cards.

They stay in this position for 15 minutes, until they submerge. We wait a while but they don’t appear anywhere. “Alright guys, we should head back,” says the captain, breaking the silence. “That was a spectacular send-off, eh?” Immediately, we begin with whistles, laughter, hugs, commentary and even applause.

We are euphoric even after reaching the shore. Later we see a couple in a heated argument with their guide, demanding their money back because they didn’t see any whales in their expedition.

We look at each other and realize we just saw something unique because here there are no schedules, no fences and no domesticated animals. This is authentic wildlife and just every once in a while, these giants decide to show themselves for a bit and share moments with our own species.

Están tan cerca que podríamos tocarlas, pero el capitán nos dice que son demasiado sensibles al tacto y podrían volcar nuestro barco. ¡Pésima idea!

En el ambiente hay asombro y respeto. El motor del barco está apagado, nosotros en profundo silencio y el mar en calma. Nada interrumpe la escena, sólo un par de cámaras que aún tienen algo de capacidad en sus memorias.

Se quedan por lo menos 15 minutos en esa posición, hasta que se sumergen. Esperamos un buen rato, pero no aparecen por ningún lado. “Y bueno, chicos, debemos regresar”, interrumpe el silencio el capitán. “Ése sí que fue espectáculo de despedida, ¿eh?”, De inmediato comenzamos con chiflidos, risas, abrazos, comentarios e incluso aplausos.

Al llegar a la orilla seguimos todos eufóricos. Un poco más adelante observamos a una pareja discutiendo acaloradamente con su guía, exigiendo la devolución del dinero porque no vieron ninguna ballena en su expedición.

Nosotros nos miramos y nos damos cuenta que acabamos de ver algo único, pues acá no hay pautas, ni rejas, ni un show de animales amaestrados. Esto es auténtica vida salvaje y, de vez en cuando, uno tiene la suerte de que estas gigantes decidan mostrarse y curiosear con nuestra especie.

There’s a refined sense of tenderness and nostalgia about Estancia Cristina, especially visible in the carefully-preserved English garden and the simple museum that chronicles the dramatic history of the pioneering Masters family. Don’t expect too many surprises. The menu has the typical grilled choices – tenderloin, blood sausage, chorizo sausage, steak, and chicken. I suggest going with the local trout or lamb. On Sundays, there’s often veal roasting, and a handful of local lambs roasting outside in the yard.

The wine list has the usual suspects, like Bodega Fin del Mundo and Caballero de la Cepa. An interesting choice is Ique Malbec from Enrique Foster. Also worth pointing out is the simple but colorful salad bar. For dessert, you’ll be sticking to middle-of-the-road Argentine classics like a custard known as flan con dulce de leche, or a almond-coated slice of ice cream.

The grillman is an old-timer who thinks of his work as a poet might. Ditto goes for José Luis Urra, the gaucho-styled maitre d’ and his team of old-timer waiters, who know all sorts of stories of who else has dropped through El Boliche besides Butch. These are real folks making real Argentine food in a place oozing with character.

There are dozens of great places to get a superb piece of steak in Bariloche.

Some have perhaps a better wine list. Others are swank and hip. El Boliche Viejo has no pretence of being trendy nor of winning awards for its cuisine. It’s a perfect stop after a day of fly-fishing or rafting on the Limay River or driving the Seven Lakes Road.

Para el postre, preferirá clásicos argentinos como un flan con dulce de leche, o una rebanada de helado cubierta de almendras.

El maestro parrillero es un veterano que piensa en su trabajo como lo haría un poeta. Lo mismo ocurre con José Luis Urra, el maitre de estilo gaucho y su equipo de experimentados meseros, que saben todo tipo de historias sobre quienes han pasado por El Boliche además de Butch.

Hay docenas de buenos lugares donde conseguir un espléndido bife en Bariloche. Algunos quizás tengan una lista de vinos mejor. Otros son ostentosos y a la moda. El Boliche Viejo no tiene pretensiones de seguir las últimas tendencias ni de ganar premios por su cocina. Es la parada perfecta después de un día de pesca con mosca o de rafting en el río Limay, o después de manejar por la Ruta de los Siete Lagos.

Approval of Patagonian hydropower plan roils Chile Aprobación de plan hidroeléctrico en Patagonia sacude Chile Authorities in Chile’s Aysén region in May granted environmental approval for the highly controversial, five-dam hydroelectric project HidroAysén, sparking widespread protests.

Chileans of all political stripes are criticizing the decision, mainly out of concern about the dams’ potential impacts on two pristine rivers in Chilean Patagonia—the Baker and the Pascua, which are highly prized as ecotourism and recreational resources. Some also see the approval as evidence of poor foresight in Chile’s energy planning.

Opposition to the US$10 billion project has also stemmed at least as much from the decision’s manner as from its content. Chilean President Sebastián Piñera and many of his ministers publicly voiced support for the dam project just before the regional regulatory body, Aysén’s Regional Environmental Commission (Corema), made its decision. And some government agencies, such as Chile’s national forest service, Conaf, were found to have changed recommendations by their own technical experts in order to speed the project’s approval.

Though project supporters contend the project review was rigorous and aboveboard, critics insist the handling of HidroAysén has called into question the legitimacy of Chile’s system of environmental oversight. “The environmental institutions of this country have been violated,” says Antonio Horvath, a center-right politician representing Aysén in Chile’s Senate. “Unfortunately, the central government made clear they wanted regional authorities to vote in favor, and that’s what has happened.

We will now take this issue to the courts.”

Says Patricio Rodrigo, head of a coalition of environmental and citizen groups opposing HidroAysén: “Environmental-impact evaluation in Chile is a comedy and a farce.”

Police estimate that some 60,000 people protested the decision on May 20 in downtown Santiago, one of the largest demonstrations in Chile in recent history.

Protests also broke out in more than 25 cities, including Coyhaique, Valparaiso, Concepción, Temuco, Puerto Montt, Punta Arenas, and Iquique. Worldwide, demonstrations on HidroAysén have occurred in Rome, Madrid, Berlin, San Francisco, Mexico City and elsewhere.

Opinion polls in Chile show broad-based opposition to the dams. Before the project’s approval, a poll by Ipsos found 61% of Chileans opposed the project.

A week after the decision, the La Tercera newspaper in Santiago released a poll showing 74% opposed.

HidroAysén is jointly owned by Endesa Chile (51%), which is controlled by Italy’s Enel, and Chile’s Colbun energy company (49%), which is owned by the Matte Group, a large Chilean conglomerate.

The project calls for five dams on the Baker and Pascua rivers with a collective installed capacity of 2,750 megawatts, or about 20% of Chile’s current energy supply.

Though the dams have been approved, jousting over HidroAysén is far from over.

The companies will not begin construction until they win approval for the 1,400-mile transmission lines needed to get the power from the dams to the capital, Santiago.

Challenges are expected in the environmental-impact review process for that project.

Chilenos de todas los colores políticos han condenado la decisión, principalmente preocupados por los impactos que tendrían las represas en dos ríos prístinos de la Patagonia chilena, Baker y Pascua, que son sumamente apreciados por ecoturistas, pescadores de caña, balsistas, kayakistas y otros tipos de excursionistas. Otros críticos vieron la decisión como evidencia de la falta de previsión en la planificación energética de Chile.

Pero la oposición al proyecto de US$10,000 millones proviene, por lo menos en igual grado, tanto de la forma de la decisión como de su contenido. El presidente chileno derechista Sebastián Piñera y muchos de sus ministros expresaron públicamente su apoyo al proyecto de represa justo antes de que el organismo regulador regional, la Comisión Regional de Medio Ambiente (Corema) de Aysén, tomara su decisión. The companies also must obtain financing, and environmental groups have been working to block their options. After meeting with representatives of the Patagonia Without Dams campaign, the Spanish bank BBVA announced in Jan. 2010 that it would “not finance” HidroAysén because it “does not comply with our established sustainability criteria.”

Daniel Fernandez, HidroAysén’s executive vice president, argues that without the project, Chile will not have enough energy at the end of the decade. He adds that the company did a “very rigorous and very technical environmental-impact study that guarantees the project will be environmentally viable.”

But Ana Lya Uriarte, the former environment secretary in the center-left Michelle Bachelet government, said that before handing over power in March 2010, the previous administration was about to reject HidroAysén due to the numerous technical and legal problems in the company’s environmental-impact study.

“This project will cause irreversible damage to the environment and the tourism economy in Aysén,” says Uriarte. “Only about 15 to 17% of Chile’s energy goes to turning on the lights of Chileans; the rest goes to industry, and primarily to the mining sector.

It’s time industry started helping the country foot the bill for their own energy use. To say that the HidroAysén project is essential to meet Chile’s future energy needs is a lie”.

Glaciarium opens in El Calafate, Argentina Glaciarium abre en El Calafate, Argentina Following in the footsteps of similar ice-themed museums in Norway and Turkey, Argentina now has its own glacier museum, Glaciarium. Located in El Calafate in the province of Santa Cruz, the museum was built to educate visitors about the Patagonian Ice Field and ways to protect it.

The museum opened its doors earlier this year following a three-year construction process. The $US 4 million dollar project has three pavilions: two of them host a climate change and glaciology exhibit, while the third has a 120-person capacity cinema. Museum directors have forged a relationship with Canada’s BANFF Mountain Film Festival and will screen some of the festival’s top adventure films there. In addition, the cinema will host art exhibitions and cultural events. A 3D movie by director Peter Lang will air continuously at the museum, showing well-known Patagonian icons like Perito Moreno, Upsala, Mt. FitzRoy and Cerro Torre.

“The museum has a modern design and state-of-the-art technology, combined with dynamic exhibitions, photographs, dioramas, and films which make it a truly interactive and entertaining experience for visitors,” said museum director Luciano Bernacchi.

The museum also has an Ice Bar, where guests can enjoy frosty cocktails in a frigid room made entirely of local Patagonian ice.

In the future, Glaciarium directors say they will expand to include a Paleontological Hall that examines dinosaurs and other life forms that previously inhabited Patagonia complete with fossil replicas and other displays.

Siguiendo los pasos de museos de hielo similares en Noruega y Turquía, Argentina ahora tiene su propio museo glaciar, Glaciarum. Localizado en El Calafate en la provincia de Santa Cruz, el museo fue construido para educar a los visitantes cerca del Campo de Hielo de la Patagonia y cómo protegerlo.

El museo de cuatro millones de dólares abrió sus puertas al inicio del 2011, tras un proceso de construcción que duró tres años. El hall principal de Glaciarum tiene tres pabellones. Dos de ellos muestran una exhibición de cambio climático y glaciología, mientras que el tercero es un cine con capacidad para 120 personas.

Los directores del museo han forjado una relación con el Festival de Cine de Montaña de Canadá BANFF, y mostrarán algunas de las mejores películas de aventura del festival en esa sala. Adicionalmente, en el cine habrá exhibiciones y eventos culturales. Una película en 3D del director Peter Lang se estará mostrando en forma continua en el museo, maravillando con íconos famosos de la Patagonia, como Perito Moreno, Upsala, Mt. Fitzroy y Cerro Torre.

El museo también cuenta con un Bar de Hielo, donde los visitantes pueden disfrutar de cócteles en una fría sala creada completamente con hielo patagónico local.

En el futuro, los directores de Glaciarum dicen que se expandirán para incluir un Hall Paleontológico que examine a los dinosaurios y otras formas de vida que habitaron previamente la Patagonia, con réplicas de fósiles y otras exposiciones.

Hairy Armadillo El Armadillo Peludo Patagonia exudes a sense of timelessness, not only in the vast otherworldliness of its landscape, but in the bizarre antiquity of some of its native species. Take the Hairy Armadillo, one of the stranger looking residents of the Patagonian steppe for more than 60 million years.

At first glance, their protective shell of dermal bone covered in small overlapping scales seems to resemble the armor of a medieval knight, defending the possessor against potential enemies. The animal recedes into its armor when threatened—but must take care not to expose its soft, fur-covered underside. The little Hairy Armadillo doesn’t look built for speed, but they have also been known to out run predators. And with their extremely sharp claws, at times they can dig themselves to safety. Moreover, surprising for an animal of the arid steppe, armadillos can swim deep underwater for 4-6 minutes at a time and make themselves buoyant by storing large gulps of air in their intestines in order to float across streams and rivers. Because water is no barrier, its helped them spread to other regions throughout the Americas as far north as Nebraska in the United States.

Prehistoric in appearance yet impressively resilient, the tenacious armadillos such as the individual in the image above are frequently found scurrying and burrowing in the eastern parts of the Patagonia National Park in Aysen, which is opening to the public in December. We hope to see this old species continue to thrive throughout Patagonia well into the future.

La Patagonia exuda una sensación de intemporalidad, no sólo por su paisaje de otro mundo, sino también por la pintoresca antigüedad que exhiben algunas de sus especies nativas. Un ejemplo es el armadillo peludo, uno de los residentes más peculiares que ha vivido en las estepas patagónicas por los últimos 60 millones de años.

A primera vista su escudo protector, compuesto de placas óseas, se parece a la armadura de un caballero medieval para defenderse de sus enemigos. Cuando se siente amenazado, el animal se esconde dentro de su armadura, cuidando a la vez su parte inferior que es suave y peluda. El armadillo no parece un animal rápido, pero se sabe que han dejado atrás a depredadores. Sus uñas afiladas les sirven para excavar huecos y así poder esconderse en lugares seguros. Una de sus características más sorprendentes siendo un animal de estepa, es que el armadillo puede nadar profundamente bajo el agua entre 4 y 6 minutos y tiene la capacidad de flotar, guardando aire en sus intestinos para poder desplazarse y cruzar ríos. Ya que el agua no es una barrera, los armadillos se han desplazado por las Américas, tan al norte como Nebraska en los Estados Unidos.

Los armadillos, como el ejemplar en la imagen de arriba, se encuentran frecuentemente en las regiones orientales del Parque Nacional Patagonia en Aysén, que por primera vez se está abriendo al público a partir de Diciembre. Re-thinking Patagonia’s Lakes

Repensando los lagos Patagónicos Brown trout in a leaping frenzy.

Lakes tend to get a bad rap. I must admit, I too used to be among the hordes of unenlightened fly fishers who look at lakes as some lesser entity, not nearly so sexy as a glistening stretch of freestone river. However, since I began guiding in Chile several years ago, my attitude toward lakes has been drastically transformed. Now, when weighing my fishing options at the beginning of the day, its often a toss up as to which way to go, river or lake?

The primary reason for this is that, aside from the coastal fjords, I know it is the lakes, not the rivers, where most of southern Chile’s biggest trout are to be found and, during the warm summer months of December through March, the surface action on the lakes can at times only be described as nothing short of a religious experience.

However, there is plenty more to it than just good bug action and big fish. The lakes of Patagonia can simply be a great place to be even when the fish aren’t showing. Whether its leaning back to watch a condor ride the air currents above a high mountain ridge, or having a curious little chucao wren come sit on your foot when you step into the woods to relieve yourself, the lakes can be medicine for the soul.

The unique geography of this part of Patagonia – with the Andes rising from the west coastal fjords and quickly giving way to the vast, dry pampas to the east – makes for a tremendous variety of lake environments. Some to the east are high mountain lakes surrounded by dry, open steppe. Others to the west are tucked beneath jagged glacier-capped peaks, surrounded by lush impenetrable rainforest. As such, each lake possesses its own unique character with vastly distinct scenery, birdlife, insect activity – and trout behavior.

Several regional lakes have prolific caddisfly and mayfly hatches that take place throughout the summer, but it’s the dragonfly action on many lakes that really steals the show. December and January is when the dragonfly activity is at its height in Patagonia; its not uncommon on warm, sunny days to see countless, large wild trout launching as high as four feet above the water capturing dragonflies. This is especially true on the smaller, shallower lakes that hold an abundance of brown trout.

The best part is that, when the browns are keyed into dragonflies, they can be incredibly unselective and voracious. They can often go into a literal feeding frenzy and almost any big, ugly dry fly will work if fished correctly. Trout can get crazed during one of these dragonfly frenzies: I once hooked and released the same 23-inch brown twice within a 20-minute time span.

I rarely use standard dragonfly patterns. Aside from having the tendency to twist your tippet into a slinky, they rarely perform well when stripped or skated; herein lies the key. I´ve discovered that, when the browns are on to dragonflies, skating or stripping a large dry – a Chernobyl or Madam X – can provoke explosive takes. Not that this technique can in any way be assumed to accurately imitate a struggling dragonfly. For whatever reason, it works and can be a blast. It’s common for big browns to completely clear the water as they devour the fly.

Lakes anywhere can dish out their fair share of excruciatingly slow fishing, and I don’t want to try and give the impression that the lakes in this part of Patagonia are any exception. A little experience can go a long way toward telling you when and when not to go fish the lakes.

That still doesn’t mean there won’t be days when you’ll be caught out there wondering where in Hell all the fish went.

That’s just fine with me. Maybe for a little longer, I can still consider it a crowded day at the lake if I see anyone else at all.

Los lagos tienden a recibir malas críticas. Tengo que admitir que también yo pertenecía a las hordas de pescadores con mosca sin iluminar, que consideraban los lagos como una entidad de menos importancia, ni cercano a lo sexy que puede ser el resplandor de un río. De todas maneras, desde que comencé a guiar en Chile hace algunos años, mi actitud hacia los lagos se ha transformado de manera drástica. Ahora, cuando evalúo mis opciones al comienzo del día, es frecuente una discusión como, ¿qué camino tomar, río o lago?

La razón principal para esto es que, aparte de los fiordos costeros, sé que son los lagos, no los ríos, donde se encuentran las más grandes truchas de Chile y, durante el tiempo cálido del verano entre diciembre y marzo, la acción en la superficie de los lagos puede a veces sólo ser descrita como nada menos que una experiencia religiosa.

De todas formas, hay mucho más que sólo acción y peces grandes. Los lagos de la Patagonia pueden ser simplemente un gran lugar para estar, aunque los peces no aparezcan. Ya sea recostarse para mirar cómo un cóndor recorre las corrientes de aire sobre la montaña, o tener a un curioso y pequeño chucao sentándose a tus pies mientras te adentras en el bosque para relajarte, los lagos pueden ser una medicina para el alma.

La geografía única de esta área de la Patagonia – con los Andes elevándose desde los fiordos de la costa oeste y dando paso rápidamente a las vastas y secas pampas del este – contiene una tremenda variedad de entornos de lagos. Algunos hacia el este son lagos de alta montaña rodeados de estepa seca y abierta. Otros hacia el oeste están ubicados bajo cimas cubiertas de glaciares, rodeados por un impenetrable bosque nativo.

Como tales, cada lago posee su carácter propio y único con su distintivo escenario, aves, actividad de insectos – y comportamiento de truchas.

Varias los regionales tienen prolíficos nidos de tricópteros que aparecen en el verano, pero es la acción de los matapiojos en muchos lagos la que realmente se roba el protagonismo. Diciembre y enero son los meses en que la actividad de matapiojos está en su máximo punto en la Patagonia; no es raro en días tibios y soleados ver incontables truchas saltando hasta cuatro pies sobre el agua mientras capturan matapiojos. Esto es especialmente cierto en los lagos más pequeños y superficiales que tienen abundancia de truchas morenas.

La mejor parte es que, cuando las morenas se ven atraídas por los matapiojos, pueden ser increíblemente poco selectivas y voraces. Pueden entrar a menudo en un frenesí de alimentación y casi cualquier mosco grande y feo puede ser eficaz si se pesca correctamente. Las truchas pueden volverse locas en medio de estos frenesíes de matapiojos: una vez recogí y devolví a la misma trucha de 23 pulgadas dos veces en un espacio de 20 minutos.

Raramente uso patrones de matapiojos estándar. Además de tener la tendencia de convertir tu esclavina en un resorte, raramente funcionan bien cuando se ruedan o patinan; esta es la clave. He descubierto que, cuando las morenas están buscando matapiojos, rodar o patinar una seca – Chernobyl o Madam X – puede provocar pescas explosivas. No es que esta técnica pueda ser asumida de ninguna manera para imitar exactamente a un matapiojo que está luchando. Por la razón que sea, funciona y puede ser un exitazo. Es común que las morenas grandes limpien completamente el agua mientras se devoran al bicho.

Los lagos de cualquier lugar pueden tener su parte de pesca torturantemente lenta, y no quiero intentar dar la impresión de que los lagos en esta parte de la Patagonia son la excepción. Un poco de experiencia puede servir para decirte cuándo ir y cuándo no a pescar a los lagos. Eso no quiere decir que no habrán días que pasarás preguntándote a dónde diablos se fueron los peces.

Eso está bien para mí. Tal vez por un poco más de tiempo, todavía lo puedo considerar un día repleto en el lago si veo a una persona más.

Crossing the Andes Cruzar los Andes

Every February, Columbia’s Cruce de los Andes (www.columbiacruce.com) takes teams of two on a 100-kilometer mountain run from Argentina to Chile over three days. The route through Patagonia changes each year, but on a given day climbs to 2000 meters, splashes across rivers and includes some descents that are easiest achieved on your backside.

This year’s race started outside San Martín de los Andes at Lake Rucachoroi in Parque Nacional Lanín. The course traveled north, with camps at Lake Ñorquinco and Lago Moquehue, before crossing the border and finishing at Chile’s Lake Icalma. The event attracts over a thousand runners, most are there for reasons similar to Marcos Corti, who competed with a prosthetic leg: “If you could just bottle this environment and drink it every time you think you have problems in life…priceless.”

For my team of two recreational runners, finishing the race was our main goal.

And crossing the Andes like 17th century Jesuits on a mission (albeit with a two-way radio and first aid kit), seemed like a cool adventure. We trained, but the variables in a mountain race are many. It was hard to feel adequately prepared.

But you don’t have to train for six months to cross the Andes. Here are some recommended hikes, through regulated border crossings, you can do with a backpack and a friend.

Carretera Austral to El Chaltén Blocked by the massive Southern Ice Field, the Carretera Austral ends at Villa O’Higgins, but it would be a shame to turn back there. With a ferry-hike-ferry, you can end up in Argentina’s magnificent Parque Nacional Los Glaciares.

Ferry Hielo Sur (www.villaohiggins.com) goes from Puerto Bahamondez (7k from Villa O’Higgins) to Candelario Mansilla, where there’s camping. From here, take a gentle oxcart trail past lakes to Argentine customs. Then either take the Patagonia Aventura (www.patagonia-aventura.com.ar) boat across Lago Desierto and transfer by bus El Chaltén or walk the rest of the way (extending the half-day hike by 15k).

While this walk isn’t hard, it does have its uncertainties. Study ferry schedules before going and call to confirm them. With good timing, the trip takes a day but take provisions for three days.

Lakes District Crossing A 3-day hike through exuberant Valdivian rainforest and under hanging glaciers, the Paso de las Nubes Trek starts 77k from Bariloche and ends in Chile’s Parque Nacional Vicente Perez Rosales. The trail skirts the regional icon of Mt. Tronador. It’s 49k from Pampa Linda to Peulla, where a ferry (www.cruceandino.com) goes to Petrohue. En febrero de cada año, Columbia Cruce de Los Andes (www.columbiacruce. com) organiza una carrera en parejas en un recorrido montañoso de 100 kilómetros de extensión entre Argentina y Chile durante tres días. La ruta atraviesa la Patagonia y se modifica todos los años, pero en un día cualquiera hay ascensos de 2000 metros, chapuzones para cruzar ríos y algunos descensos en los que conviene mantenerse sentado.

Este año la carrera comenzó en las afueras de San Martín de Los Andes, en el lago Ruca Choroi, Parque Nacional Lanín. El trayecto apuntaba al norte, con campamentos en los lagos Ñorquinco y Moquehue, antes de cruzar la frontera para culminar en Laguna Icalma, en el lado chileno.

Al evento llegan más de mil atletas, la mayoría atraídos por motivos similares a los que tuvo Marcos Corti, quien compitió con una pierna ortopédica. “Si tan sólo, uno pudiera meter en un frasco ese ambiente y beberlo cada vez que uno “piensa” que hay problemas en la vida… priceless”.

En mi equipo, integrado por dos corredoras recreativas, la meta principal era poder terminar la carrera. Además, cruzar Los Andes como lo hacían los jesuitas en las misiones del siglo XVII (salvo por una radio de dos canales y un botiquín de primeros auxilios), parecía una gran aventura. Entrenamos, pero en una carrera en la montaña hay muchas variables. Nos costó sentirnos bien preparadas.

Pero no hace falta entrenar seis meses para cruzar Los Andes. A continuación, algunas recomendaciones sobre excursiones, con cruces fronterizos regulados, en las que basta con una mochila y un compañero de viaje.

Carretera Austral hasta El Chaltén El extenso Campo de Hielo Sur pone fin abruptamente a la Carretera Austral, que acaba en Villa O’Higgins, pero sería imperdonable no continuar el viaje. Con una combinación de trasbordador, caminata y trasbordador, se puede llegar al majestuoso Parque Nacional Los Glaciares.

El ferry Hielo Sur (www.villaohiggins.com) va desde Puerto Bahamondes (7 km de Villa O’Higgins) hasta Candelario Mansilla, donde se puede acampar. Desde ahí se puede llegar hasta la aduana argentina por un manso sendero en carreta de bueyes a partir de los lagos. En ese punto, las opciones son navegar el lago del Desierto con Patagonia Aventura (www.patagonia-aventura.com.ar) para continuar en el bus El Chaltén o bien, terminar el resto del camino a pie, con lo cual la excursión de medio día se prolonga en 15 kilómetros.

Aunque la ruta no es complicada, presenta algunas incertidumbres: Hay que analizar los horarios de la flota antes de ir y llamar para confirmar. Con una buena planificación, el viaje puede durar un día, pero es mejor prepararse para tres.

Travesía por la zona de los lagos En una excursión de tres días por la exuberante selva Valdiviana, cubierta por glaciares suspendidos, la excursión por el Paso de las Nubes parte a 77 kilómetros de Bariloche y termina en el Parque Nacional Vicente Pérez Rosales, en Chile.

After decades of major leaps forward, travel gear companies are in a period of tweaking, each season giving us slightly better functions than before. The big battle now is in “breatheable” waterproof fabric that lets sweat escape as you ski or hike. The original Gore-tex is being challenged on all fronts, with some companies like Polartec and Mountain Hardwear claiming their own proprietary membranes do a better job of letting the body vent.

This year, we also saw a greater focus on sustainability, with more products made from recycled water bottles or other waste.

And we saw an emphasis on the longevity of gear. Companies like Patagonia and Columbia may be cranking out new styles as fast as Prada, but that doesn’t mean the old models are no longer useful. Buying quality, durable clothes or shoes and then using them until they wear out (if they ever do) is the most sustainable path available.

Here are a few travel gear products that stood out for me this year, pushing the innovation envelope a little further.

Eton is a company really walking the walk when it comes to renewable energy and they make all kinds of great products that will keep you powered up no matter where you are. I especially liked their new Eton Raptor kit. It has a load of cool functions packed into a lightweight, $130 list price package: solar charger, altimeter, barometer, compass, radio, weather alert system, alarm clock-shall I stop now? Well, that solar charger goes into a 1800mAh rechargeable Lithium Ion Battery that can fire up your cell phone or MP3 player as well.

I’ve long been a huge fan of the various SteriPen water purifying wands. I would conservatively estimate I’ve personally kept at least 500 plastic water bottles out of landfills by using my SteriPen Adventurer when traveling in developing countries. Now they’ve introduced an even lighter (2.6 ounces), smaller Steripen Freedom model that comes with the one big feature everyone has been screaming for: it’s rechargeable! Not just in a wall socket either, but also in a USB port. Buy one of these nifty gadgets and take bottled water off your list for good.

If you’ll be hiking or skiing in the Patagonia backcountry, you can pack light and still be safe with a compact new SOL Origin Emergency Kit from Adventure Medical. It stands for “Survive Outdoors Longer.” This handy kit fits in the palm of your hand when packed, but has all the essentials: knife, signal mirror, compass, rescue whistle, fire sparker, fishing/sewing kit, tinder, and braided nylon cord. There are some handy extras too, like a LED light on the knife and a booklet with survival tips. It lists for $60, which makes for a darn cheap insurance policy.

In the clothing sphere, companies have responded to our luggage fee pain while flying and are producing more double-duty items. ExOfficio and Merrell both make puffy winter jackets that are very warm, but can stow into a pouch that doubles as a neck pillow. Columbia, Craghoppers, and others are making travel pants that are lightweight, wicking, water-resistant, and come with built-in insect repellent. Loki jackets really help you get the most out of your outerwear: the jacket includes built-in mittens, a neck warmer, face shield, hat, and plus…it turns into a daypack!

Tras décadas de considerables avances, las empresas de equipo de viaje están ofreciendo sólo pequeñas mejoras y retoques respecto de sus temporadas anteriores. Actualmente la gran batalla es en tela impermeable-respirable, que deja que el sudor escapar mientras esquías o haces trekking. El Gore-tex original está desafiado en todos los frentes, ya que compañías como Polartec y Mountain Hardware aseguran tener membranas que permiten el cuerpo ventilarse mejor.

Este año vimos más enfoque en sostenibilidad, con productos hechos de botellas recicladas u otros desechos. Y vimos un énfasis en la longevidad de equipo de viaje. Compañías como Patagonia y Columbia pueden estar desarrollando estilos tan rápidos como Prada, pero esto no significa que los modelos antiguos estén obsoletos. by Carolyn McCarthy It was an audacious youth that any globetrotter would envy: Lucas Bridges hunted wild bulls, pillaged abandoned shipwrecks and explored a once-unblemished Tierra del Fuego at the southernmost tip of the Americas. In time, he would befriend the “savages” that Charles Darwin had sneered at from the H.M.S. Beagle.

Meet E. Lucas Bridges, the greatest adventurer you’ve never heard of.

Recently, Bridges’s classic 1947 autobiography Uttermost Part of the Earth returned to print in an unabridged version released by Overlook/Rookery Press. The hefty 558-page tome bears witness to Tierra del Fuego’s transformation from an untouched wilderness to a frontier molded by fortune seekers, sheep ranchers and missionaries.

Born in Tierra del Fuego in 1874, Lucas was the son of Thomas Bridges, a mild, hardworking minister who founded the Anglican mission of Ushuaia. Other missionary attempts had already failed, starved or ended in massacre. Undaunted, the Bridges family, including six children and an aunt, settled in. At the time, the island was an 18,000-square-mile roadless no-man’s land of mountain and marsh, river and lake, inhabited by seafaring Yaghan to the south and Onas to the north.

The book’s nature observations are astute. Yet more noteworthy is its knowledge of cultures that no longer walk the earth. Bridges tells of how Yaghan women skin-dived for mollusks and initiated their newborns in the same frozen seas. The book explains how to make fires under the rain and hunt the crafty cormorant, all thanks to the knowledge of natives, who would startle the sleeping birds at night from seaside cliffs, allowing their canoe-bound companions to catch them.

True frontier travel and hardship probably made for better postcards than today’s eco-tourist adventures. Bridges built the first cross-island road (now an abandoned trail) with a team of Ona workers. Reporting home to the family, he wrote, “One gets thin on a diet of lean guanaco meat, especially when one works too hard.”

Lucas Bridges lived in Patagonian history’s key moment: when worlds collided. He saw the native population “in the act of taking, in one generation or less, the stride from prehistoric man to a civilization that has taken us thousands of years to accomplish, if we have accomplished it yet.”

In their modern absence, the Yaghan and Onas have only become more misunderstood and cartooned. On Ushuaia’s pier, cruise ships gobble up the postcards of undressed natives. Adventure outfitters take indigenous names and then there’s the Jimmy Button souvenir shop on the main drag.

If the Bridges family was a testimony of the success of colonization, Bridges’s account is a testimony of its failures. After living abroad, marrying and running a ranch in South Africa, he returned to Tierra del Fuego. It was 1944, and though no petroleum plants had been built yet, and fishing lodges and ski areas were yet to be established, the island held only a handful of the 9,000 indigenous that once inhabited it.

Noting the disorientation caused by civilizations once thousands of years apart now intersecting, he says, “It was queer to hear Ona spoken on the telephone.”

Nacido en Tierra del Fuego en 1874, Lucas era hijo de Thomas Bridges, el trabajador y bondadoso fundador de la misión anglicana de Ushuaia. Otros misioneros habían fallado en el pasado, siendo devorados por el hambre o terminando en masacre. Intrépidamente, la familia Bridges, que incluía seis hijos y una tía, se instaló. La isla era entonces una tierra de nadie, sin caminos, de 18,000 millas cuadradas, cubierta de montañas, pantanos, ríos y lagos, habitada por navegantes Yaganes en el sur, y por los Onas en el norte.

Lucas Bridges vivió en la Patagonia en un momento clave: cuando los mundos chocaron. Vio a la población indígena “dando, en una generación o menos, el enorme paso desde el hombre prehistórico hasta la civilización que hemos tardado miles de años en lograr, si es que lo hemos logrado” En su ausencia moderna, los Yaganes y los Onas han sido más malentendidos y caricaturizados. En Ushuaia, los cruceros devoran las postales de nativos desnudos. Los fabricantes de equipos de aventura usan nombres indígenas, y está la tienda de recuerdos de Jimmy Button en la calle principal.

Si la familia Bridges fue un testimonio del éxito de la colonización, el recuento de Bridges es un testimonio de sus fracasos.
