Exploring Patagonia Explorando la Patagonia

E

ven today, as technology advances and transportation links improve, Patagonia still includes areas that are very much a last frontier for explorers, and none more than the several hundred glaciers that encompass the vast Patagonian Ice Fields. In this edition, we include three stories about three generations of explorers of the Patagonian ice.

Andres Pinto, a young mountain climber from Chile, writes about his recent odyssey battling the unforgiving conditions of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Pablo Besser, perhaps the greatest-ever explorer of the Patagonian Ice Fields, contributes an essay about his experience completing the first longitudinal crossing of the southern ice fields in 1999, and how, almost 20 years later, the ice fields and exploration itself have gone through profound changes. And we profile Cedomir Marangunic, one of the pioneers in the annals of Chilean mountaineering, who explored the ice fields together with none other than the legendary British mountaineer Eric Shipton in the early 1960s.

En esta edición, incluimos tres historias sobre tres generaciones de exploradores del hielo patagónico.

Andrés Pinto, un joven montañista de Chile, escribe sobre su reciente odisea luchando contra las implacables condiciones del Campo de Hielo Patagónico Sur. Pablo Besser, quizá el mejor explorador de los Campos de Hielo Patagónicos, contribuye con un artículo sobre su experiencia completando el primer cruce longitudinal del Hielo Sur en 1999, y cómo, casi 20 años después, los campos de hielo y la exploración en sí misma han sufrido cambios profundos. También incluimos un perfil de Cedomir Marangunic, uno de los pioneros del montañismo chileno, quien exploró los campos de hielo nada menos que con el legendario expedicionario británico Eric Shipton a principios de la década de 1960.

I remember when I first traveled to Chile way back in February 1995, and my closest companion during my journey was Bruce Chatwin’s beautifully written book In Patagonia. Patagon Journal pays its respects to Chatwin on the 40th anniversary of the publication of this classic work of travel literature. And when it comes to ecotourism, I can’t think of a better place in South America to see up close whales and other charismatic wildlife than Peninsula Valdes on Patagonia’s Atlantic coast. The veteran travel writer Wayne Bernhardson gives tips on how to go and talented photographer Kevin Zaouali provides spectacular images of what you can see there.

The Patagonian Ice Fields Los Campos de Hielo Patagónicos E

ighteen thousand years ago, an ice sheet covered most of Chile and southern Argentina. Today’s Patagonian Ice Fields are its last remnants, which consist of two non-contiguous sheets—the Northern Patagonian Ice Field and the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the world’s third-largest continental ice sheet after those of Antarctica and Greenland. Altogether, these ice fields span 17,200 square km (6,640 square miles), with 90 percent of the glaciers in Chilean Patagonia.

The Patagonian Ice Fields are a desolate, white landscape, with some mountain peaks rising more than 3000 meters high (9,842 feet) and often inhospitable weather and knock down winds. Legendary British mountaineer Eric Shipton, who between 1958 and 1961 led three expeditions to the ice fields, once described its extraordinary environment this way: “The incessant wind, heavily charged with moisture, forms immense deposits of rime, draping vertical precipices, building vast cornices on the windward side of the ridges and a fairy-land of weird shapes, minarets, giant mushrooms, jutting gargoyles, all with a floral pattern of ice crystals.

Exploration here did not truly begin until 1913, when German mountaineer Federico Reichert entered the ice cap via Perito Moreno Glacier. In 1931, Father Alberto De Agostini notably accomplished the first east to west crossing of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, in 20 days trekking and climbing from Lake Argentino to Falcon Fjord on the Pacific. Still, as Pablo Besser recalls in his essay in this edition of Patagon Journal, it was not until 1999 that anyone was able to complete a longitudinal crossing of the Southern Ice Field, when he and three other Chileans - Jose Pedro Montt, Mauricio Rojas, and Rodrigo Fica - achieved the feat after making their way down and over, what had been up until then, the “impassable” Reichert Fault.

La exploración allí realmente no comenzó hasta 1913, cuando el montañista alemán Federico Reichert ingresó a la capa de hielo a través del glaciar Perito Moreno. Los Campos de Hielo Patagónicos siguen siendo en gran parte un paisaje fronterizo, con los límites de la capa sur aún no acordados íntegramente por Chile y Argentina, mientras cada país observa los enormes recursos de agua dulce preservados en el hielo glaciar. También es un entorno amenazado, con el cambio climático más que duplicando el ritmo de retroceso de los glaciares en las últimas dos décadas. (J.L.)

hat profound silence. There, on that vast and isolated Patagonian landscape, the look on my companions’ faces expressed the same distress I was feeling.There was no turning back, no escaping whatever fate had in store for us. Just a few minutes earlier, we were waving goodbye to Marcus, who brought us by boat to that cold and solitary beach off the side of O’Higgins Glacier. He was the last person we would see for three long weeks.

“What do we do now?” we seemed to ask one another in silence. We had loaded our backpacks with all they could hold in preparation for the long voyage to the central plateau of the Southern Patagonian Icefield, the world’s third-largest continental ice mass after Antarctica and Greenland.

Our purpose in those remote lands was to climb the Lautaro Volcano and Mount O’Higgins which have been climbed only once, by Cedomir Marangunic, Eduardo García, and others in the

early 1960s. In part, it was the stories of these pioneers that had brought us there. But more importantly, it was our desire to enter into a world of diffuse horizons and uncertain limits, to become nomads in the middle of a frozen and ice-cracked sea, its stark beauty protected by implacable and unpredictable forces of nature that test you at every moment.

We made our way into a labyrinth that had been formed by the patient work of the immense, receding O’Higgins Glacier over an unfathomable time scale. As Erick and I were fighting against the Patagonian wind, which strikes with fearsome force here, Carlos turned his head and yelled, “Hey guys, what is this?”

His worried shriek warned of the desolate landscape ahead. A violent, rough moraine appeared at our feet -- there below a powerful river ran until it disappeared into the sides of the glacier. We just stared in disbelief.We dropped

Quizá simplemente necesitábamos adaptarnos a ese entorno de la forma más dura, realizando varios porteos de nuestro equipo. Sinceramente, esa noche no se habló mucho.

ué silencio tan profundo. Allí, en esa vastedad y aislamiento tan propio de la Patagonia, las caras de mis compañeros eran elocuentes: denotaban la misma angustia que sentía yo. Era el momento en que ya no parecía haber marcha atrás, ese umbral a partir del cual quedábamos entregados a nuestra suerte. Pocos minutos antes alzábamos nuestros brazos para despedir a Marcus, quien nos había trasladado en su embarcación hasta esta solitaria y fría playa ubicada a un costado del glaciar O’Higgins.

Fue la última persona que vimos durante tres largas semanas. ¿Qué hacemos ahora?, parecíamos preguntarnos de forma silente. Cargamos nuestras mochilas con lo que más pudimos con la intención de realizar un porteo largo, lo más cerca posible de la meseta central

del Hielo Patagónico Sur, la mayor extensión de hielos continentales tras la Antártica y Groenlandia.

Nuestro objetivo en aquellas tierras remotas era ascender el volcán Lautaro y el monte O’Higgins, ese que todavía registra apenas una ascensión, realizada, entre otros, por Cedomir Marangunic y Eduardo García a principios de los 60’. En parte eran esas mismas historias de pioneros las que nos habían llevado hasta allí. Pero quizá lo más relevante era entrar a un mundo de horizontes y límites difusos, ser nómades en medio de un mar gélido y agrietado, una belleza resguardada por fuerzas de una naturaleza implacable e impredecible, que te pone a prueba a cada instante.

ra el quinto día de expedición y la cuarta noche que pasábamos en el refugio ubicado donde el glaciar O’Higgins se desprende de la meseta superior del Hielo Patagónico Sur. Temprano en la mañana partimos nuevamente a la playa con el fin de realizar el último porteo. ¿El tiempo?

Malo; inhóspito, más bien, como todos los días que llevábamos allí.

Cargamos las cosas una vez más y nos adentramos en el ya familiar laberinto. A esas alturas, la morrena no nos asustaba, teníamos el camino memorizado, pero sí causaba estragos en nuestros lastimados tobillos. Sin embargo, en la retina teníamos algunos atisbos de lo que era el Campo de Hielo y eso nos levantaba el ánimo.

Desde el refugio, el monte O’Higgins se escondía recelosamente de nuestras miradas lujuriosas, y sólo un par de veces tuvimos la opción de observar su hermosa cumbre. Jugando el mismo juego, entre nube y nube se asomó el Ilse, cerro que fue bautizado así en honor a la expedicionaria alemana Ilse Von Rentzell, quien exploró esta área en los albores del siglo XIX. Pero el volcán Lautaro, para nuestro pesar, nunca posó ante nuestros ojos durante la primera semana.

our gear there and decided to go back to the beach, perhaps with the delusionary hope that Marcus would be waiting there to take us back to civilization. Or maybe we just needed to adapt to this environment the hard way, making various trips in order to haul the gear across. Honestly, that night we spoke very little.

Portage without pause

I

t was the fifth day of the expedition, and our fourth night in a shelter located where O’Higgins Glacier comes off the uppermost plateau of the Southern Patagonian Icefield. Early in the morning, we left the beach once again for our final portage. The weather?

Bad, inhospitable, very much like all of our days there.

We packed our things once again and went into the now familiar labyrinth. At this point, the moraine no longer frightened us because we had memorized the path, but it ravaged our aching ankles. Still, we had glimpses of the Patagonian Icefield as we advanced and this lifted our spirits.

From the perspective of our shelter, Mount O’Higgins seemed to conceal itself, as though wary of our looks of longing. Only twice could we make out its beautiful peak. Playing the same game, peeping out occasionally from between the clouds, was the Ilse, a peak named in honor of the German expeditionary Ilse Von Rentzell, who explored this area at the dawn of the 19th century. But to our great regret,

Ese último día de porteo fue eterno. Las horas transcurrían con una lentitud pasmosa, y antes de montarnos en el primer glaciar, la lluvia se desató con furia, sin ningún tipo de misericordia. Eran cerca de las 19 horas y aún nos quedaba mucho camino por delante. Con nuestros crampones puestos empezamos a remontar el hielo, paso a paso, metro a metro, sorteando grietas y buscando la ruta idónea.

El aguacero no cesaba, y para peor, el viento empezaba a soplar cada vez más fuerte. Poco a poco nuestros cuerpos comenzaron a resentirse frente a la tempestad, con un frío que calaba hondo, pero que al mismo tiempo nos impulsaba a movernos con rapidez. Hay veces en que simplemente hay que saber mantenerse en movimiento.

La luz se apagaba en el horizonte y nos vimos obligados a sacar nuestras linternas frontales. En una jornada sin tregua, ya anocheciendo ingresamos al refugio, estilando, sin una gota de calor. Al menos habíamos terminado la tediosa tarea de portear todo el equipo hasta la meseta central del Hielo Patagónico Sur. Ese era el gran consuelo.

eníamos que decidirnos pronto. Partíamos al día siguiente o nos quedábamos aguantando la tormenta que se avecinaba. Las opciones se resumían

On our final day of portage, the hours passed so slowly that time seemed to stand still. And before we even got onto the first glacier, the rain poured with merciless fury. It was close to 7 p.m., and we still had far to travel. Our crampons on, we began to climb the ice, step by step, meter by meter, bridging gaps in the ice and searching for a suitable route.

The downpour would not stop, and to make things worse, the wind began to blow harder by the minute. Little by little, our bodies felt the punishing effects of the storm and its penetrating coldness, but it also pushed us to move quickly. There are times when you must know to simply keep moving.

As the light faded in the horizon, we took out our headlamps. After an entire day without stopping, we returned to our tent, dripping wet and chilled to the bone. We had at least finished the tedious task of getting all of our equipment to the central plateau of the Southern Patagonian Icefield. We could take comfort in that.

Rumination and resolutions

W

e had to decide quickly. Would we leave the next day, or stay put and weather the approaching storm? Our options were to go forward into the rain with low visibility, or endure the next five days holed up in a tent. We opted for the former. According to our calculations, if we moved on the next day, we would be on track to reach the Eduardo Garcia Shelter by the day’s end, where we would have a chance of waiting out the worst of the storm under a solid roof.

But nature has its own ideas, irrespective of human desires, and the next morning we awoke to blinding, white-out conditions. The hills we contemplated the night disappeared without a trace. We only learned that we were in the skirt of Lautaro Volcano after hiking for two days across the Hickens Corridor.

Silence again took hold amongst us. Without speaking, we broke camp, prepared our sleds and skis, and departed, tentatively, in a straight line into the unknown. On the first stretch, we simply had to retrace our steps. Confused, we consulted the GPS, but the information it gave only perplexed us more. Then we saw the tracks.

“We’re not alone,” we thought. But incredibly, these were our own footprints which we had left just hours earlier. We must have been moving in a large circle. Bewildered, we decided to look more closely at the GPS. That’s when, suddenly, the walls and mountains surrounding us reappeared. Is that the Lautaro again? Are we behind the Pyramid mountain range? It took us awhile, but we finally

Pero la naturaleza tiene su propio afán, ajeno a las pretensiones humanas, y la mañana siguiente se presentó ciega. De los cerros que contemplamos la noche anterior no había ni rastro. Sólo sabíamos que estábamos en la falda del volcán Lautaro después de dos días cruzando el corredor Hickens.

El silencio volvió a apoderarse de nosotros.

Mudos, levantamos campamento, armamos los trineos y los esquíes, y salimos en fila rumbo a lo desconocido, casi a tientas. En el primer tramo simplemente debíamos volver sobre nuestros pasos. Confusos y con poca certeza, consultamos el GPS, pero la información que nos proporcionaba nos desconcertaba. Y encontramos huellas.

“No estamos solos”, pensamos. Pero no, increíblemente, eran nuestras propias pisadas. Marcas de algunas horas atrás: estábamos dando vueltas en círculo. Abrumados, decidimos trabajar de forma más seria con el GPS. Al rato, murallas y cerros aparecieron de la nada. ¿Ese es el Lautaro, de nuevo? ¿Estamos detrás del cordón del Pirámide?

Costó, pero por fin nos ubicamos con certeza. Hacía frío y había que caminar, y mucho.

managed to orient ourselves. It was cold, and we had to walk a lot more.

In the distance, the pass leading to Marconi Glacier appeared to be playing hide-and-seek. With good snow conditions, our plan was to conduct our ski tour without skins to make faster progress. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Out of nowhere, we came upon a new crevassed terrain that led into Chico Glacier. Once again, in our constant search for bridges, we found ourselves instead in a labyrinth, leaving us no option other than to set up camp. We needed rest.

But Patagonia has its rewards; after much hard work it delivers small doses of ecstasy. The rain stopped, the winds died down, the clouds began to lift, and an afterglow tinged the horizon. To our left appeared the Marconi mountain range with its two shining stars -- the peak of Chaltén, or Mount Fitz Roy, and beyond that, Cerro Torre.

A stormy shelter

T

he storm would not stop. Inside the shelter, the windows steamed over as we played one card game after another. After being holed up there for two days, we just wanted to leave.The night we got there, we arrived literally soaked. Now, in the warm shelter, the storm was again testing our strength and patience in other ways. We at least had gotten some rest, but the

A nuestra izquierda asomaba el cordón del Marconi, teniendo como estelares la punta del Chaltén –o Monte Fitz Roy- y más allá, el cerro Torre.

Un refugio tormentoso

L

a tormenta no paraba. Adentro del refugio las ventanas se empañaban y nuestros juegos de naipes se repetían una y otra vez. Queríamos salir, ya llevábamos dos días encerrados.

La noche en la que llegamos allí lo hicimos empapados, literalmente. Ahora, en la calidez del refugio, nuevamente la tormenta ponía a prueba nuestra fortaleza y nuestra paciencia. Al menos habíamos logrado descansar, pero los reportes del tiempo no eran alentadores, y nuestro ánimo decayó. La espera se volvía eterna.

Quizá a la mañana siguiente.

Un nuevo día, y seguía nevando. Todo parecía repetirse. Sin embargo, a las 10 am los primeros rayos de luz surgieron por entre las nubes. Decidimos ascender

weather reports were not encouraging and our spirits were falling. The wait felt eternal.

Maybe the next morning, we thought. A new day, and it was still snowing. It was like the days were repeating themselves.

However, finally, at 10 a.m. the first rays of light broke through the clouds. We decided to try to climb the Gorra Blanca, but fate would not allow it. Wind, and then more wind, and then more snow, stymied even the thought of it.That afternoon, the storm calmed and we headed toward the Circo de los Altares. We had dreamt of gazing on the iconic granite walls of Chaltén and Cerro Torre from there, surrounded by those upright, secondary spires. We left behind the Eduardo García Shelter, named after a man who, in his lifetime, was a member and instructor in our very own University of Chile Mountaineering Club. At times, a deep blue sky would struggle to emerge from the middle of the grey vault, pleasing us with vestiges of celestial blue and lifting our mood. At least the snow was good, and we were able to make swift progress.

At the bottom, the Lautaro’s farewell felt almost like an invitation for us to return and, this time, climb it.

Suddenly, though, everything was concealed again and it began to rain. It was that blinding horizontal rain, which strikes violently and, maybe even worse, leaves one completely drenched on one side and dry on the other, so that one is cold and warm at the same time. With almost no visibility, we moved forward yet again in virtual blindness.

Whump! I was suddenly yanked to the ground. It felt as if someone had pulled me down toward the frozen and dark depths of the ice. My sled had fallen into one of the cracks, and it almost carried me with it. I managed to stabilize myself with my poles while Carlos raced over to help me.

It was time to set up camp. We must have been in front of the Circo de los Altares, but we could see nothing, absolutely nothing.

Not a wall, not a spire. Not even a speck of the granite of our dreams.

In search of an exit

W

e were finishing our third week on the ice when we were overcome by the feeling that something wanted us out of there. A furious wind and an immense crevasse field set the scene for a long, painful, and slow march. We

Soñábamos con las icónicas paredes de granito del Chaltén y el Torre desde esa perspectiva, rodeados por esas enhiestas agujas secundarias. Atrás dejábamos el refugio Eduardo García, quien fuera en vida instructor y miembro de nuestro club: la Rama de Montaña de la Universidad de Chile.

A ratos, un cielo de celeste profundo emergía a duras penas en medio de la bóveda gris, y con esas migajas nos conformábamos. Era como un golpe anímico.

Al menos la nieve estaba buena, avanzábamos rápido. Y al fondo, el volcán Lautaro se despedía como invitándonos a volver, esta vez para ascenderlo.

De repente, todo se tapó y comenzó a llover. Era esa lluvia horizontal, que molesta la vista y golpea con violencia, y quizá peor aún, que hace que un lado del cuerpo esté completamente empapado y el otro seco, brindando frío y calor al mismo tiempo. La visibilidad era nula. Otra vez avanzábamos casi a ciegas. ¡Paf! Un tirón me hizo caer al suelo.

Se sentía como si alguien me jalara hacia abajo, hacia las gélidas y oscuras profundidades del hielo. Mi trineo había caído a una grieta, y casi me lleva con él. Logré autoasegurarme con los bastones mientras Carlos apuraba el tranco para auxiliarme.

Era hora de armar campamento. Debíamos estar frente al Circo de los Altares, pero no vimos nada, absolutamente nada. Ni una pared, ni una aguja. Ni una pizca del granito de nuestros sueños.

Buscando una salida

C

ompletábamos tres semanas en el hielo y sentíamos que nos querían sacar de ahí. Un viento con furia y un campo de grietas inmenso era el escenario de una marcha doliente, lenta, sufrida.

Cargábamos nuestros trineos con una mano mientras nuestros pies sufrían por el terreno irregular.

Con poca visibilidad, no encontramos la salida lógica del Campo de Hielo hacia la laguna Ferrari, y luchábamos por acercarnos a una morrena en las nacientes del glaciar Viedma. Nadie pronunciaba una sola palabra, todos caímos en una

loaded our sleds with one hand while our feet suffered the irregular terrain.

Unable to see, we could not find the logical exit from the Patagonian Ice Field toward Laguna Ferrari. Instead, we fought our way toward a moraine at the source of the Viedma Glacier.

No one spoke as we fell into a sort of trance, lulled only by the sounds of our own breathing and footsteps. With total concentration, we focused our energy on getting around the crevasses and walls blocking our progress.

But even after scaling the huge

walls we found ourselves, still, prisoners on the ice.

The afternoon brought with it more cold and wind. We were a mere 200 meters (650 feet) from mainland, but we could not find a way out. In one of the many occasions when I turned to my companions for a solution, I saw Erick being literally swept up and knocked to the ground by winds swirling at more than 100 km (62 miles) per hour. Once again, Patagonia had taken us to the limit, facing once more those forces beyond our control. Exhaustion, fear, and frustration embodied our frozen faces.We felt truly defeated, like we would never find a way out of there. The fight continued even after we set up the tent and got inside. The wind kept blowing, forcing the three of us to try to hold up the tent and secure the canvass and the rods. Despite our

efforts, the violent winds smacked them up against our bodies with all the blizzard’s fury. We felt utterly disheartened. Carlos asked for a hug, he needed support, just like the rest of us. Tears welled in our eyes, as we turned to the voices of loved ones to calm the storm that brewed inside.

on constant alert. I enjoyed this peace, knowing that nothing bad could happen here. Now, nature seemed to extend its arms to protect us. We were tired, but while it was not easy to carry the 40-kilo (88-pounds) pack, it was nothing compared to what we had lived on the ice just days before.

We walked with weary steps along the final meters of the path leading to El Chaltén. I thought of the last time I turned around at Paso del Viento to say goodbye to the Southern Patagonian Icefied. The sun had finally come out after 21 days and 120 km (75 miles) on the ice. What a farewell. It was a moment that I will never forget.

Behind us remained our story on the ice, where our emotions had been pushed to extremes,where we confronted relentlessly the implacable forces of nature that respect neither plans nor objectives.

De nuevo bajo el sol

sa tarde caminé tratando de seguir la orilla del río. Mis pies disfrutaban del pasto y mi cuerpo entraba en un extraño letargo después de haber pasado semanas en el hielo con todos los sentidos alerta, casi sin pausa. Disfrutaba de esa paz, de saber que nada malo podía pasarnos. La naturaleza ahora parecía extendernos sus

brazos para cobijarnos. Estábamos cansados, no era fácil llevar unos 40 kilogramos en la espalda, que a estas alturas se hacían sentir de forma tortuosa, pero nada comparable con lo que habíamos vivido días atrás.

Caminábamos a paso cansino por los últimos metros del sendero que lleva a El Chaltén.

Mientras tanto, rememoraba la última vez que giré en el portezuelo del Paso del Viento para despedirme del Hielo Patagónico Sur. Por fin salía el sol. 21 días en el hielo y 120 kilómetros después. Vaya despedida. Es una postal que no podré borrar jamás. Atrás quedaba nuestra historia en el hielo, allí donde nuestras emociones fueron llevadas al extremo, resistiendo de forma incesante frente a una naturaleza implacable, que no respeta planes ni objetivos.

I

still remember organizing our first largescale expedition to the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Together with Rodrigo Fica and Jorge Crossley, our goal was to become the first team to cross the entire length of the glacier field – 400 kilometers (259 miles) of desolate, unexplored terrain where the unforeseeable is the rule rather than the exception.

It was, in a way, a form of revenge over a past failure. One year earlier, we had been invited by explorer Arved Fuchs to take part in an international effort to achieve the same feat. In the end, neither his ex-

Junto a Rodrigo Fica y Jorge Crossley queríamos ser los primeros en cruzar en sentido longitudinal la vastedad de ese campo glaciar. 400 kilómetros de desolación donde lo inexplorado y lo imprevisible es lo común, no una excepción.

Fue una especia de revancha, motivada por haber participado un año antes en un intento internacional para lograr la misma proeza, cuando fui invitado por el explorador Arved Fuchs. Sin embargo, ni sus éxitos

So, in 1996, we decided to try again the “Chilean way.” At that time, the ice field represented the last great polar crossing still not yet achieved by anyone.

However, once again, we failed. It wasn’t because of our equipment. We had only ourselves to blame. We did not yet fully understand that the “human element” is by far the most decisive factor in such a quest.

Over the next two years, Rodrigo Fica and I committed to better preparing ourselves. During this time, I joined our German friend Fuchs for polar crossings in Greenland and the Arctic once again. Finally, Fica and I organized a formidable expedition that was strong in both its material and human dimensions. And this time, we were able to endure 98 days in that place, and all but nine in extreme conditions. The storms were unyielding and offered us no respite. Still, we advanced, making our way little by little. At times, we were forced to wait a day or two for conditions

El último gran desafío de travesía tipo polar pendiente. Sin embargo, también en esa oportunidad fallamos. No el equipo, sino nosotros como grupo humano. No vislumbramos que eso era lejos el factor decisivo.

Junto a Rodrigo Fica dejamos pasar dos años. Nos preparamos mejor. Fui a Groenlandia y al ártico nuevamente junto

al germano Fuchs. Y al regresar armamos una expedición potente, en lo humano y material. Así resistimos 98 días de durísimas condiciones climáticas, donde solo nueve días fueron buenos. El resto, una tormenta continua, incesante, que no daba tregua alguna. Pero avanzábamos, siempre un poco. A veces esperábamos mejores condiciones, un día o dos. En otra ocasión, nueve días estuvimos enterrados esperando en una cueva al borde de una gran caída de 600 metros, al borde sur de la Falla de Reichert. Pues sí, el Hielo Sur no es solo nieve plana. Es una sucesión de cumbres y

to improve. On one occasion, we were holed up for nine days in a cave at the edge of a 600-meter (1,969 feet) drop at the southern border of the Reichert Fault. Indeed, the Southern Ice Field is not a flat, snowy plane, but rather a succession of peaks and mountain passes that pose almost constant challenges along the way.

I was dubbed “the navigator” by Fica, and he was “the narrator.” Another member of our team we nicknamed “the poet,” because he recited verses for us on stormy nights. The last of our group, “the stoic” — what a name! — once went out on a stormy night to put up a 30-meter (98 feet) antenna in hope of communicating with the outside world via our high-frequency radio. We were the four “storm riders”: Fica, José Pedro Montt, Mauricio Rojas and myself. Today, twenty years later, I do not believe I could do it again, but if I did, it would have to be with them. Together, we had boundless drive.

The wind is constant on those icy fields. It is a tireless companion, as is the cold, but what is hardest to bear is the humidity. The temperate glaciers hover around zero degrees Celsius, meaning that the cold is always accompanied by moisture. This is different from the Arctic and other places that are colder but drier and, for that reason, more bearable. In the humidity of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, constant movement is the only way to keep from freezing.

We would climb out of our sleeping bags in the morning and travel the whole day by ski, dragging our 90-kilo (198 pounds) sleds behind us and wanting nothing more than to get back into our warm sleeping bags at night. This was especially

Fuimos los cuatro jinetes de la tormenta. Hoy, 20 años después, no creo poder hacer lo mismo, y si lo hiciera, solo sería con ellos. Simplemente la motivación que teníamos era inmensa.

Al final, conseguimos vencernos a nosotros mismos, pasar ese umbral que ciertas expediciones logran, donde lo que haces es más grande que uno.

Es el equipo el que lo lleva a cabo, y la unidad es lo que le da fuerza.

El viento es constante en esas planicies heladas, es tu compañero incansable, infatigable. El frío también. Pero lo más difícil de sobrellevar es la humedad. Al ser glaciares templados, siempre están muy cerca del 0° Celsius: la humedad junto con el frío son la norma, a diferencia del ártico u otros lugares más fríos donde curiosamente se está mejor; seco, pero frío. Acá, si no nos movíamos, nos enfriábamos muy rápidamente.

Salíamos del saco de dormir y todo el día solo caminábamos con nuestros esquíes, arrastrando nuestros trineos de 90 kilogramos, para solo esperar volver al cálido saco de dormir por la noche. Especialmente al final del viaje, donde todos perdimos peso, y el frío golpeó con fuerza.

It is a tireless companion, as is the cold, but what is hardest to bear is the humidity.”

so near the end of the trip, when all of us had lost weight and the cold seemingly hit us still harder.

Somehow, we decided that in order to lighten our load or to move more quickly, we should leave some of the food behind on the final stretch of our journey. It was a mistake that forced us to go almost a month eating only a third of what we should have been consuming. Hunger took hold of us. Nevertheless, we managed to go only two days without food by the time we made it out at Last Hope Sound in Chile’s Magallanes Region.

One day before, we had left the ice for good. With one step, we leapt onto the sand, leaving Balmaceda Glacier behind. It was raining, but the water no longer touched us. We looked at one another and embraced, but without the eruption of joy that one might imagine. We said, simply and with sincerity, “it’s over.” We were done. That was it. We had nothing left in us.

The real celebration happened thirty days prior, on January 9, 1999, when we successfully crossed the Reichert Fault for the first time - the very place that had frustrated numerous explorers, including not only the Germans I had gone with previously, but Italians, Spanish, Swiss, and Brits, among others. There was a long list of those who failed to not just cross the ice, but understand it. At the time, adequate information simply was not available.

20 years later

T

wenty years later, things are so much easier. Now, carrying equipment weighing less than 500 grams (1.1 pounds), it’s possible to have power, a satellite telephone, and GPS — just about everything one needs. Twenty years ago, this would have meant carrying a minimum of 15 kilos (33 pounds) in solar panels, radios, antennas, and often erratic GPS equipment.

The climate has also changed. Twenty years ago, I crossed the ice facing the O’Higgins Glacier. Recently, in 2016, I went back to

Fue un error que nos obligó a estar casi un mes comiendo la tercera parte de lo que debíamos ingerir. El hambre nos abrazó. No obstante, alcanzamos a salir luego de pasar solo dos días sin comida: llegamos al Seno Última Esperanza. El mismo lugar que truncó los sueños de navegantes creyendo que habría una vía náutica mejor, nos recibió con alegría. Era el término de nuestro viaje.

Un día antes nos habíamos bajado del hielo para siempre. Un paso y saltamos a la arena, dejando el glaciar Balmaceda detrás.

Llovía, pero el agua ya no nos tocaba. Nos miramos, nos abrazamos, sin ninguna explosión de alegría o felicidad como uno podría imaginarse. Simplemente y con sinceridad nos dijimos: “se acabó”.

Terminamos. Finito. Estábamos destruidos.

La alegría había ocurrido 30 días antes, cuando un 9 de enero de 1999 logramos cruzar por primera vez la gran Falla de Reichert. Esa misma falla que detuvo a numerosas expediciones, a los mismos alemanes con los que participé, a italianos, argentinos, españoles, suizos, ingleses y muchos más. Una larga lista que no solo no pudo cruzar el hielo, sino que tampoco entenderlo. Faltaba información.

20 años después

H

oy es todo más fácil. 20 años no es nada, dice la canción. Pero sí lo es en tecnología. Ahora con 500 gramos tengo energía, teléfono satelital y GPS. Casi todo lo necesario. Hace 20 años eso implicaba mínimo 15 kilogramos de paneles solares, radios, antenas y erráticos GPS. El clima también cambió. Hace 20 años crucé la gran Meseta de Todas las Madres frente al glaciar O’Higgins. Ahora, en 2016, volví a subir a ese glaciar, pasando por un estupendo refugio instalado por la Dirección General de Aguas, e intentamos junto a Max Villar el volcán Lautaro. El tiempo y la visibilidad no nos ayudaron mucho,

climb this glacier. I stayed overnight at a wonderful shelter installed by Chile’s national water agency, and made an attempt on the Lautaro Volcano with Max Villar. The weather and visibility were not much help, but it was nothing compared to the stormy conditions we had experienced in 1998.

Por un lado, la tecnología, la facilidad de comunicaciones y los pronósticos del tiempo han facilitado enormemente las expediciones; y por otro, han sepultado aquello que las hacía más interesantes: la incertidumbre. El no saber qué te deparará la ruta o el siguiente día.

En esta última visita sabíamos, por ejemplo, que seguían al menos diez días de mal tiempo mientras esperábamos en un cómodo refugio con luz eléctrica y paneles solares. Por eso decidimos regresar, aunque tampoco había esperanza de que mejorara el tiempo si seguíamos esperando un poco más.

Sin embargo, la aventura no está del todo perdida, ya que con las facilidades de hoy en día se puede hacer más con menos. Es posible organizar expediciones más ambiciosas, pero con menos gastos y una logística más sencilla. Por ejemplo, al bajar del glaciar O’Higgins, en vez de esperar a una lancha o un barco, simplemente inflamos nuestros packrafts o balsas inflables personales que llevábamos en nuestras mochilas y remando por nuestra cuenta regresamos por las gélidas aguas del lago homónimo. Hace más de 50 años, cuando Eduardo García retornó del cerro O’Higgins en ese mismo sector, le tomó cerca de un

with cracks, and the nunatak or rock formations have risen as the ice cover is lowering dramatically. It just is not the same anymore.

As well, technology, ease of communications, and accurate weather predictions have made expeditions in the area much easier and all but buried what made these explorations so attractive in the first place: the uncertainty, not knowing what the route or the next day will bring.

Still, adventure is not entirely a thing of the past. Today, thanks to modern day conveniences, one can do more with less. It is possible to organize more ambitious expeditions than ever, and with lower cost and simpler logistics. For example, upon descending O’Higgins Glacier during our most recent expedition, we did not have to wait for a boat to pick us up.

Instead, we just inflated the pack rafts that we carried in our backpacks and rowed ourselves home through the icy waters of the lake. Fifty years

ago, when Eduardo García returned from his first ascent of O’Higgins, it took him close to a month to get the transportation he needed to make it back to civilization.

Altogether, I have spent nearly a year of my life on the Patagonian Ice Fields. I have made four expeditions to the Southern Ice Field and five to the Northern Ice Field (many during winter), making me the only person to have ever crossed both ice fields and thus achieve the so-called “Patagonian Grand Slam.” And although things have changed, I still believe this is a landscape of infinite adventure. Every day, those expeditions stay alive in my memory and I like to think that in those past times I was happier, more alive, and more aware than at any other.

There are still a few virgin, unexplored spaces left on the map, patiently awaiting their first human visitor. And some of those untouched places are in the Patagonian Ice Fields, waiting for you.

Las nuevas tecnologías lo han hecho más amigable. El clima está más benigno, no así la geografía con el derretimiento de los hielos. Pero sigue siendo un lugar raramente visitado.

Se extrañan las largas expediciones. Al parecer, también el montañismo ha cambiado. Quizá siendo más acorde a estos tiempos vertiginosos, se privilegia la dificultad por sobre la extensión.

Hoy en día quedan pocos lugares blancos en el mapa, vírgenes y sin ser hollados, esperando pacientemente por su primera visita humana. De todos ellos, varios permanecen allá. Esperándote.

I am here to interview him at his office, Geoestudios, his consultant firm for much of a professional career that has won him significant recognition both at home and abroad. For anyone who loves mountains, ice and snow as much as Marangunic, there could hardly be a better spot for his home base.

After a brief wait, Marangunic emerges to greet me at the entrance to his office. His firm, Geoestudios, founded in 1981, offers consulting and research services in issues ranging from glaciers, avalanches and natural risks to hydrology and geology.

His clients have included diverse public and private sector organizations from Chile and worldwide, as well as companies in the mining and electricity sectors.

Marangunic, now 81, walks slowly but with purpose. This tall, strong-jawed, somewhat awkward man looks more like a “gringo,” or foreigner, than a Chilean, and as we talk his calm demeanor sometimes gives way to a mischievous smile. Cedo (pronounced Chedo), as he is known to his friends and colleagues, has always had a taste for adventure, and his face lights up as he tells me about his escapades on mountains and glaciers.

Marangunic was a true pioneer in the exploration of the Patagonian Ice Fields, and his most notable journeys and expeditions on the ice include those he carried out alongside Eric Shipton, the renowned English mountaineer who led some of the first expeditions to Mount Everest and numerous other peaks in the Himalayas and the Karakorum. In spite of his momentous achievements, Marangunic remains a humble man with a profound appreciation for life’s simpler pleasures.

First experiences in the mountains

orn to Croatian immigrant parents in 1937, thanks to the encouragement of his mother and uncles, Marangunic first developed a connection to nature and the wilderness in the barren steppes of Patagonia. He still remembers his first visits to Torres del Paine before it was a national park and the summers he spent with an uncle in the countryside just outside Punta Arenas. This was

where he climbed his first peaks, awakening a love for mountaineering that has stayed with him throughout his life.

The year 1948 was a difficult year in Chile, and the so-called Ley Maldita (“Damned Law”), which outlawed the Chilean Communist Party, forced part of Marangunic’s family to leave the country. Thus, just 11-yearsold Cedomir went to live in the land of his ancestors in what is now Croatia, near Zagreb. While this was a tough time for those closest to him, it ended up being one of the happiest periods of his life. During his stay in the former Yugoslavia, he fell in love with snow and winter sports, and even became a champion crosscountry skier. The mountains no doubt represented something of a refuge from the complexities

1948. Son tiempos difíciles en Chile y la denominada “Ley Maldita”, que tuvo por finalidad proscribir la participación política del Partido Comunista, obligó a parte de la familia Marangunic a abandonar el país. Así, con apenas 11 años, partió a vivir a la tierra de sus progenitores, en la actual Croacia, cerca de Zagreb. Pero lo que fue un duro golpe para su círculo más íntimo terminó siendo para él una de las etapas más felices de su vida.

of living in a place that was only just emerging from the ravages of World War II. However, his father found himself disillusioned with the governing regime and his mother never really felt at home in their new country, so their stay in Europe was short-lived. After six years, the family returned to Punta Arenas, but this temporary change of scenery served to only strengthen the connection Marangunic felt to the mountains.

A lifelong friend

S

hortly after his return to Chile, Marangunic left Patagonia to study engineering in Santiago. Although he had always excelled at mathematics, it did not take him long to realize that the subject was not for him. Then a friend from Punta Arenas told him that that there was a career path that would allow him to spend most of his time in the mountains. Geology. It was a turning point in his life. This was exactly what he was looking for.

During his first year at the University of Chile, he joined the ski club which, as chance would have it, was located just next to the mountaineering club. One day, the mountain climber Eduardo García was looking for an experienced skier to accompany him on a winter ascent. The two men climbed Cerro Negro, in the outskirts of Santiago. It was Marangunic’s first high mountain climb and marked the beginning of a close, lifelong friendship with García.

Constantly on the lookout for peaks that had not yet been climbed, they were both soon captivated by the Patagonian Ice Fields. In the early 1960s, this vast, difficult-to-access zone was virtually unknown, a blank space on the map that demanded a strong sense of

Un amigo del alma

oco después de su retorno a Chile, Marangunic dejó la Patagonia para estudiar ingeniería en Santiago.

Si bien las matemáticas siempre fueron su fuerte, de inmediato se dio cuenta que no era lo suyo. Y aquí vino un punto de inflexión: un puntarenense amigo le comentó que existía una carrera que daba la posibilidad de estar acampando la mayor parte del tiempo en los cerros.

Marangunic no lo podía creer, era exactamente lo que buscaba. Así dio con la geología.

Ese primer año en la Universidad de Chile tampoco fue en vano. Ingresó a la rama de esquí, la cual, coincidentemente, quedaba al lado del club de montaña. Un día, el andinista Eduardo García andaba en búsqueda de un compañero con quien realizar un ascenso invernal, y para eso necesitaba un esquiador experimentado. Juntos subieron el cerro Negro, en la cordillera santiaguina. Fue la primera alta montaña en el historial de Marangunic, y punto de partida también de una entrañable amistad que traspasó las fronteras de las cumbres.

adventure and exploration. Unlike the grandiose, large-scale expeditions to the Himalayas, their aim was to climb with no external support and as light as possible. With this in mind, they selected Cerro O’Higgins as their first major objective.

While sailing on Lake O’Higgins, Marangunic and García crossed paths with another boat that was departing the Southern Patagonian Icefield. Given the desertedness of this Ice Field at this time, the encounter was a highly improbable one. The boat turned out to be carrying Eric Shipton, who was then one of the greatest mountaineers in the world, on his way back from an unsuccessful attempt to climb Lautaro Volcano. But it was just a fleeting encounter, Marangunic and García exchanged only a few words with the English climber.

“I was still a geology student,” Marangunic remembers. “We didn’t have a lot of resources. We were wearing torn jeans, patched-up parkas, and carrying ropes with years of use as well as damaged tents. It was all very basic.” Clearly, Shipton could not have been overly impressed with the young climbers. Yet, in spite of their youth and inexperience, they became the first people to summit Cerro O’Higgins.

Expeditions with Shipton

hipton learned about this feat thanks to his fellow Englishman Jack Ewer, a professor at the University of Chile. “When we first met him, he thought that we had no chance of doing it. He thought we were just a ragtag pair of amateurs, and even felt sorry for us. When he found out that we’d completed the ascent, he invited us along for a much more ambitious challenge: crossing the entire Southern Patagonia Ice Field from north to south,” explains Marangunic.

Shipton, who enjoyed support from institutions such as the Royal Geographical Society, led the expedition team, which included Marangunic, García and Ewer. Their 52-day crossing took them from the Jorge Montt Glacier to the edge of the Upsala Glacier and over a series of peaks, including Cerro Murallón. It was to be the first of several noteworthy expeditions.

The following season, Ewer was replaced by the Chilean mountaineer Francisco Vivanco, a close friend of Marangunic and García. This time, they set their sights on the Cordillera Darwin and scaled peaks including Mount Darwin, now named Mount Shipton in homage to the English climber. The expedition was not all smooth sailing, though. It took more than a week to establish communication with the Chilean Navy, who were to pick them up at the agreedupon fjord. The long absence caused many to fear the worst, and an unfounded, scandalous rumor that the group had gotten lost circulated around the world. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth: while they waited they enjoyed sunny weather on a Patagonia beach and caught their own fish and seafood.

In the Southern Hemisphere summer of 1963-1964, Marangunic embarked on his last major expedition with Shipton in Patagonia: an almost complete crossing of the Northern Patagonia Ice Field. Their route took them from the northeast to the southeast of the ice field,

Navegando por el lago O’Higgins, la cordada de Marangunic y García se topó con otra embarcación que venía saliendo del Hielo Patagónico Sur. Una absoluta rareza, ya que en ese entonces era casi imposible toparse con alguien por allí. Resultó ser Eric Shipton, uno de los grandes montañistas de aquella época a nivel mundial, que regresaba luego de un intento fallido al volcán Lautaro. Fue un encuentro fugaz, donde solo intercambiaron unas breves palabras.

“Yo era estudiante de geología todavía. Los medios con que contábamos eran mínimos, íbamos con unos blue jeans rascas, una parka toda parchada, unas cuerdas con años de uso y unas carpas maltrechas. Todo era bien rudimentario”, recuerda Marangunic. Claramente, la impresión que se llevó Shipton no fue de las mejores. Pese a ello, la cumbre del O’Higgins terminó siendo hollada por primera vez.

Las expediciones con Shipton

través del también inglés Jack Ewer, que era profesor en la Universidad de Chile, Shipton se enteró de la hazaña. “En nuestro encuentro él creía que nosotros no teníamos ninguna posibilidad. Pensó que éramos un grupo andrajoso, tanto que a él le daba pena. Cuando supo que ascendimos nos invitó a lo que era algo realmente ambicioso: la travesía norte-sur del Hielo Patagónico Sur”, explica Marangunic.

Apoyado por instituciones como la Royal Geographical Society, el británico se encargó de todo el equipo de la expedición, que incluyó a Marangunic, García y Ewer. Fueron cerca de dos meses en una ruta que los llevó desde el glaciar Jorge Montt a los márgenes del glaciar Upsala, ascendiendo diversas cumbres como el cerro Murallón. Fue el inicio de una serie de expediciones notables.

En la temporada siguiente, Ewer fue reemplazado por el chileno Francisco Vivanco, montañista y fiel amigo de Marangunic y García, y el objetivo esta vez fue la cordillera de Darwin. Entre otras cumbres, el grupo escaló el monte Darwin, que hoy rinde homenaje llevando el nombre del expedicionario inglés. Fue un viaje que no estuvo exento de polémica, ya que costó más de una semana entablar comunicación para que la Armada de Chile los fuera a buscar al fiordo acordado. Se llegó a pensar lo peor, y a nivel internacional circuló la infundada noticia que la expedición se había perdido con escandalosos resultados. Nada más alejado de la realidad: la cordada disfrutaba tranquilamente de unos días soleados en una playa patagona, comiendo pescados y mariscos.

En el verano del hemisferio sur de los años 1963-64, Marangunic realizó la última gran expedición con Shipton en la Patagonia: una

beginning at Laguna San Rafael and ending at the Colonia Glacier, where they completed the second ascent of Cerro Arenales.

“At the time it was an extraordinary crossing, far beyond anything else that had been done. Mount San Valentín had already been climbed, but that whole area was a mystery,” says the accomplished Chilean mountaineer and explorer Camilo Rada, who has himself completed some exceptional first ascents in Patagonia, Antarctica and North America. Without doubt, Marangunic wrote his name into the history books of exploration in Patagonia. Adds Rada, who has met with the veteran mountaineer on several occasions to learn more about his historic experiences: “I see him as a pioneer, given the situation for exploration at that time. There was so much new land to explore, with giant valleys and entire plateaus where nobody had ever set foot.”

Shipton himself described Marangunic as a highly skilled mountaineer, and especially noted his extraordinary ability to orient himself and navigate in adverse conditions during a time long before the advent of GPS. This is what Shipton said about him in the books about his adventures, such as Tierra del Fuego: The Fatal Lodestone, in which he wrote: “Luckily, Cedomir had a superb feeling for topography and never made a mistake.”

Marangunic has fond memories of these expeditions with Shipton: “I set out on adventures that I had dreamed of ever since I was a kid. At that time, the Patagonian Ice Fields were seen as a remote and complicated place, part of an unknown interior. I felt free there, and we made a contribution to knowledge of the region.”

Although the crossing of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field was his last major expedition with Shipton, their friendship

endured in spite of the age difference between the two men (the English explorer was 30 years Marangunic’s senior).

Marangunic laughs as he remembers his friend, and tells me with affection a revealing anecdote about the celebrated European mountaineer, whom he remembers as a simple man who was always prepared to listen to others and tell endless stories while smoking a pipe in the tent.

“Once, we arranged to meet up on a glacier in Alaska in 1966.

I gave him the directions about how to get there, but he ended up taking the most difficult route, spending four or five days crossing a series of mountains. He and two other guides from the area were completely lost. He had absolutely no sense of direction in the mountains, and he often ended up taking crazy routes through Patagonia. In the end, we always managed to convince him, and things worked out.”

Marangunic recuerda con sensaciones especiales todas estas expediciones, sobre todo aquellas junto al montañista inglés:“Conseguí realizar aventuras que habían sido parte de sueños desde joven. Los Campos de Hielo se miraban en ese entonces como algo tan complicado, un lugar remoto, de un interior desconocido.

El estar ahí era una sensación de libertad, y fue un aporte al conocimiento de la región”.

Si bien la expedición al Hielo Patagónico Norte fue el último gran viaje con Shipton, la relación de amistad se mantuvo a lo largo de los años, pese a que la diferencia de edad era tremenda –el inglés nació en 1907-. Marangunic se ríe con cierto grado de arrepentimiento, y después termina contando una anécdota que revela cómo era el renombrado montañista europeo, a quien recuerda como una persona sencilla, siempre abierta a escuchar al resto y a narrar sus interminables historias fumando una pipa intoxicante dentro de la carpa.

Renown as a glaciologist

A

fter completing his doctorate in glaciology at Ohio University, Marangunic came back to Chile and returned to his post as a professor at the University of Chile, where he went on to become head of the Geology Department. However, it was not long before he left academia behind to start Geoestudios and work as a private consultant.

Over the years, he has become a respected glaciologist and produced influential work on a number of topics. For example, when the country was in the midst of a drought, he experimented by scattering a soot-based compound to hasten the melting of a glacier.The

Rada, a PhD candidate in glaciology at the University of British Columbia, says his views on climate change are the product of another era: “Cedomir comes from a time when the only outlook was extractivism. Fifty years ago, nobody was questioning the things we’re questioning today.”

Despite their difference of opinion on this issue, Rada is full of praise for the man he considers to be Chile’s most eminent glaciologist, a leader in his field with great respect among his peers.

In his view, these masses of ice should be managed and used to our advantage.

But such ideas have brought him into conflict with those who believe that the glaciers should be left alone. “The effects of climate change are enormous, and it has no doubt been accelerated by human actions. However, even if we took humans out of the equation, the glaciers would keep shrinking, because that’s what they’ve been doing since the last glaciation, since 15 to 18 thousand years ago.

Some environmentalists think that the glaciers should only be seen but not touched, but that is not protecting them,” affirms Marangunic with the certainty of a man who has dedicated his life to the ice.

This expertise has brought him a profound sense of fulfillment: “What I’m drawn to is really knowing, in depth and beneath appearances, the environment around me.

For me, getting to the origins of a mountain or another environment is deeply satisfying. It’s like reading a book: it tells you a story.”

With many summits and expeditions under his belt, it is clear that this octogenarian scientist will keep working because he is passionate about what he does and believes that he is still making a tangible contribution to society. He enjoys the happiness that comes from a life well lived, having followed his heart across the peaks and ice fields of Patagonia.

a de regreso en Chile tras completar su doctorado en glaciología en la Universidad de Ohio, en Estados Unidos, Marangunic retomó su cargo de profesor en la Universidad de Chile, donde llegó a ser director del departamento de geología. Pero al poco tiempo abandonó la academia para conformar Geostudios y trabajar como consultor privado.

Desde esa tribuna se ha transformado en un respetado glaciólogo, y muchos de sus trabajos y dichos sobre ciertas temáticas han generado fuerte impacto. Como cuando durante una gran sequía que afectó al país experimentó esparciendo un compuesto en base a hollín para acelerar la fusión de un glaciar en la zona central –con exitosos resultados-, en un hito que dio la vuelta al mundo. Al igual que las investigaciones que ha liderado creando glaciares artificiales. Y es que desde su perspectiva, estas masas de hielo deben ser manejadas y aprovechadas.

Y aquí se enfrenta de lleno con quienes luchan para que sean intocables. “El cambio climático es de efecto astronómico, seguramente acelerado por la presencia humana. Pero si pudieras separar a los humanos de todos estos efectos, los glaciares seguirían reduciéndose, porque lo vienen haciendo desde la última glaciación, desde hace 15 mil a 18 mil años atrás. Esta posición de algunos ambientalistas, de que los glaciares

se miran y no se tocan, no es protección”, afirma Marangunic con la certeza de un hombre que ha dedicado su vida a los hielos.

Pero su visión representa también el paradigma de otra época. Así lo entiende Camilo Rada. “Él viene de un tiempo donde la única visión era la extractivista. Hace 50 años nadie se cuestionaba lo que nos cuestionamos hoy”, señala el candidato a glaciólogo en la Universidad de British Columbia, quien pese a ello no escatima elogios para un tipo que considera como el glaciólogo con más trayectoria de Chile, un referente muy respetado entre sus pares.

A través de su trabajo, Cedomir Marangunic sigue ligado a la montaña, y siempre inculcó esa pasión por los cerros a su propia familia, la que incluso lo ha acompañado al interior de Geostudios. A lo largo de los años, este viejo montañista ha sumado nuevos viajes a los Hielos Patagónicos, e incluso pasó varios veranos trabajando con glaciares en la Antártica y lugares tan lejanos como Nueva Zelanda. Y es en parte gracias a su campo de experticia que ha podido satisfacer sus más profundos deseos y anhelos. “Lo que me atrae es conocer profundamente, más allá del aspecto visual, el entorno que me rodea. Esto de reconocer el origen de la montaña y otros ambientes, es algo que me llena mucho. Es como leer un libro, te cuenta una historia”, confiesa.

Con varias cumbres y expediciones en el cuerpo, en definitiva este octogenario científico continúa ligado a su trabajo porque le apasiona, y también porque siente que realiza una contribución tangible a la sociedad.

Es la satisfacción de un hombre que no esconde la felicidad que siente tras una vida bien vivida, siguiendo fielmente los senderos y caminos que dictan su corazón, siempre apegado a las cumbres y los hielos.

Moreover, data show that from 2000 to 2012, the rate of thinning was more than double what it was from 1975-2000 in the Patagonian ice fields and this trend only continues. Altogether, Patagonia’s two ice fields account for about 10 percent of the total sea-level rise caused worldwide by mountain glaciers. “Patagonia is kind of a poster child for rapidly changing glacier systems,” says Cornell University researcher Michael Willis, lead author of a study in 2012 showing that the Patagonian icefields are supplying water to sea-level at a comparatively high rate for their size.

and the United States sent a letter to Chile’s government warning that it must move faster to address threats posed by increasing deglaciation in the country, which is home to 90 percent of the Patagonia region’s ice fields.

“As the landscape responds to climate and global changes, the time for action is running out,” said the letter. “The glacial risks in Patagonia carry economic and social implications. They will not only affect the landscape, but the infrastructure and people as well.”

Since then, not much has really changed. For instance, Chile has failed to pass a law to protect glaciers, which has been bogged down in the nation’s congress since 2006. And not nearly enough has been done to

safeguard communities in the direct line of potential Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (Glofs), or landslides such as what occurred at Villa Santa Lucia.

The last time I was in touch with Gino Casassa, a glaciologist, I was working on a story about the dangers of Glofs in Patagonia and worldwide. In particular, I wanted to know then about his work studying Lago Cachet 2, the most notorious case concerning Glofs in Patagonia. Since April 2009, about three times annually, this five-square-km (2-sqmile) glacial lake in the south of Chile’s Aysén region has been draining some 200 million cubic meters of water – the equivalent of 46,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools –into the Colonia and Baker rivers. The results are so-called “river tsunamis,” as the Glof events are sometimes called, which can threaten roads, bridges, farms and the town of Caleta Tortel at the mouth of the Baker River.

Casassa, 59, who is also an avid mountaineer and rock climber, currently works at Geoestudios in Santiago and as a researcher at the University of Magallanes in Punta Arenas.

He has been studying glaciers in Patagonia for more than three decades, with more than 15 scientific expeditions to the Patagonian Icefields since 1984.

But he is not just one of Chile’s leading glaciologists, rather a leader worldwide in glacier and climate change issues.

In 2007, Casassa was lead coordinating author of Working Group II for the Fourth Assessment Report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), an organization which that same year shared the Nobel Peace Prize with former United States Vice-President Al Gore.The report assessed the “scientific, technical and socio-economic information concerning climate change, its

potential effects, and options for adaptation and mitigation.” Most recently, he was co-researcher for a three-year study by the International Atomic Energy Agency about climate change and its impact on glacier retreat and ecosystems in polar and mountain regions worldwide. Here are excerpts from my interview with Casassa in December.

CASASSA: If you look at all of Patagonia, we have evidence of more frequent events for the very simple reason that with global warming the ice is melting faster and these glacial lakes are growing. There’s evidence from very remote areas where nobody’s living, like the Cordillera Darwin in Tierra del

Ha estado estudiando los glaciares de la Patagonia por más de tres décadas. No solo es uno de los principales glaciólogos de Chile, sino también un líder mundial en asuntos relacionados con los glaciares y el cambio climático.

En el 2007, Casassa fue el autor principal y coordinador del Grupo de Trabajo II para el Cuarto Informe de Evaluación del Panel Intergubernamental de Expertos sobre el Cambio Climático de las Naciones Unidas (IPCC), una organización que ese mismo año compartió el Premio Nobel de la Paz con el exvicepresidente de Estados Unidos, Al Gore. El reporte evaluó “la información científica, técnica y socioeconómica acerca del cambio climático, sus posibles impactos y las opciones en cuanto a adaptación y mitigación”.

Recientemente, Casassa fue coinvestigador en un estudio de tres años realizado por el Organismo Internacional de Energía Atómica, que abordó el cambio climático y su impacto en el retroceso de glaciares y en los ecosistemas de las regiones polares y de montañas en todo el mundo. A continuación, algunos extractos de mi entrevista con Casassa en diciembre pasado.

There’s at least three cases in the Southern Patagonian Icefield. And in the Northern Patagonian Icefield, there’s also several cases reported. One, of course, is Cachet 2, whose glacial tunnel is still open, but in the past at Lago Leones, and just south of Glacier Colonia at Lago Arco.

Is Chile prepared for GLOF events?

There’s a gap in the science world right now. We need to do more to map the danger zones and bring this to policymakers, city planners and others to make adequate legislation to regulate the urbanization of towns and roads. This is very well developed in other mountainous countries such as in the Alps - where you have green zones, yellow zones, and red zones - but here it’s not very well developed.

Are you encouraged by the way the world - other than Donald Trump, of course - is reacting to the climate change threat?

Yeah, absolutely. I recently saw the new documentary by Al Gore, An Inconvenient Sequel.

It’s wonderful to hear how the world in general is turning to renewable energy sources and prices of solar panels are dropping. This is completely changing the energy matrix, including in Chile, which is actually a major example in Al Gore’s movie.

How much is sea level rising?

Sea level rise is increasing by about 3 millimeters per year.

It’s not much, but when you multiply it by 100, over the last century, we have had a sea level increase of about 20 to 30 centimeters, and the projections by the end of this century is it could be even more than 2 meters every year. This figure is increasing and increasing.

And 2 meters is a lot.

Ice is moving at a huge range of speeds across Patagonia, from as little as a few centimeters to as much as 10,000 meters per year. In this map, yellow areas are moving the fastest and purple areas are the slowest.

Is the rate of glaciers melt continuing to increase in Patagonia?

Yes, yes. We just submitted with some colleagues a paper to a journal where we compare more recent surface elevation data from 2014 from a German satellite, Tandem X, with the NASA Space Shuttle Data from the year 2000. It points to further acceleration of the mass loss of many glaciers. On the other hand, we also discovered a few glaciers that are stable. Moreno is stable; it has pulses of both advance and retreat. And surprisingly there are a few other glaciers that are increasing, particularly on the southwestern and central western sides.

El nivel del mar está aumentando casi 3 milímetros al año. No es mucho, pero cuando lo multiplicas por 100, tenemos que en el último siglo el nivel del mar ha aumentado entre 20 y 30 centímetros, y las proyecciones para el final de este siglo apuntan a que podría aumentar más de 2 metros cada año. Why are glaciers growing in some places?

An increase in precipitation.

There’s good evidence that shows the westerlies are increasing and pushing toward the south. As long as that happens, the precipitation will increase as well. As long as that precipitation is solid, and there’s snow, the glaciers will be in good shape and gain mass. But once the warming continues, of course the solid precipitation turns into rain, and rain will melt the glaciers even further.

Do you have any future projections for the Patagonian Icefields?

We have a model on future behavior evolution of the Northern Patagonian Icefield. We’ve not done that exercise yet for the Southern Icefield. But the difference between the North and South is that precipitation has decreased down to around Coyhaique, but further south it has increased. Not much, but a little. And that little will help glaciers to grow in the upper areas, but in the lower areas, where

the temperatures are having an effect, the ice melt is increasing. Particularly, there are a few glaciers - very large glaciers like Jorge Montt, O’Higgins, and others - where the ice flow is accelerating. These glaciers are not just melting, but calving - breaking into big pieces and going into the ocean, fjords, or fresh water lakes.

Could we see a major change in the Patagonian landscape in the next century?

Yes, the so-called ice dynamic effects will become more important as the ice melts where there already is a lot of water.

This water acts as a lubricant to the glacier flow, so as the ice becomes more lubricated it will flow more rapidly and the ice velocities will become faster. And these calving contributions to the fjords and fresh water lakes will increase. We’re seeing that already not only in several large Patagonian areas, but also Greenland and parts of Antarctica. And there’s no upper limit to the acceleration a glacier can experience, they could

Tenemos un modelo de la evolución del comportamiento futuro del Campo de Hielo Norte. Todavía no hemos hecho ese ejercicio para el Campo de Hielo Sur. Pero la diferencia entre el Norte y el Sur es que la precipitación ha disminuido hasta los alrededores de Coyhaique, pero ha aumentado más al sur. No mucho, pero un poco. Y ese poco ayudará a que los glaciares crezcan en las zonas altas, pero en las zonas bajas, donde las temperaturas están teniendo un efecto, el deshielo irá aumentando. Particularmente, hay algunos glaciares –glaciares muy grandes como Jorge Montt, O´Higgins y otros –donde el flujo de hielo se está acelerando. Estos glaciares no solo se están derritiendo, sino que se están desprendiendo; rompiéndose en pedazos que caen en el océano, fiordos o lagos. ¿Habrá un cambio importante en el paisaje de la Patagonia en el próximo siglo?

Yes, the major losses have been occurring close to sea level, but now we’re starting to see glacial losses even above a thousand meters in elevation, so that’s quite remarkable and concerning, that even in the upper plateau, like west of Fitz Roy, we’re seeing glacier loss in a place which is supposed to have snow year round.

When was this discovered?

The Chilean army invited some of our colleagues this past August.

They collected valuable data, and what was very remarkable, a stake we had put in there at the end of the 1990s, and which was practically buried under snow when we were last there seven years ago, now has surfaced again. So, the

surface melt is increasing, and the snow is not accumulating there.

It’s losing snow. So that’s very concerning because the mass ice balance on the Patagonian Icefields, even at that altitude, at around 1500 meters above sea level, is losing mass.

What should Chile and Argentina do to protect the Patagonian Icefields?

I think a major step was done years ago when both countries declared the ice fields as national parks. Industrial use of the parks is legally unacceptable, so they are protected. Argentina has gone a step further in approving a glacier law. In Chile, we’re still lacking a glacier law. What’s needed now is more environmental restrictions, protocols and regulations. We’re working on that - both in Chile and in Argentina - but there’s still a long way to go.

hen we think of national parks, our minds immediately go to imposing and indomitable landscapes full of nature and life. We think of locations rich in flora and fauna, with iconic vistas that capture the identities of their respective regions, places that inspire governments and others to make greater conservation efforts.

Today, few question the social and economic benefits of national parks. Indeed, there seems to be a growing awareness of their importance. “Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life.” Although written over a century ago by visionary American naturalist John Muir, these words resonate more strongly than ever.

National parks have become our greatest symbol of conservation, and all over the world there are an increasing number of land and water ecosystems that fall under some degree of state or private protection. Chile is no exception, and in 2017 it added a considerable number of new places to its list of protected areas.

In particular, Tompkins Conservation is donating 407,625 hectares, which together with

the Chilean government annexing another 949,368 hectares will result in the creation of three new national parks: Pumalin, Melimoyu and Patagonia. Moreover, Chile is re-classifying four national reserves into national parks, thereby establishing Kawéskar National Park and Cerro Castillo National Park, as well as adding the Lago Cochrane and Lago Jeinimeni national reserves to the new Patagonia National Park.

Not counting these new parks, which are in various stages of implementation, Chile’s National System of Protected Areas (SNASPE) currently has 36 national parks, 49 national reserves, and 16 natural monuments. In total, these protected areas cover close to 14.6 million hectares, or an area equivalent to 20 percent of the total national territory.

At the same time, tourism has become one of Chile’s fastest growing industries. The number of foreign tourists to Chile has more than doubled over the past decade to nearly 4.5 million people in 2015. As well, the average daily per capita expenditure for these tourists has increased from $US 43.7 dollars in 2001 to $US 64 dollars in 2015. Visits to national parks from both tourists and Chileans have also risen in this period, today exceeding 3 million people per year.

uando pensamos en parques nacionales, nuestra mente de inmediato nos transporta a lugares imponentes e indómitos, llenos de naturaleza y vida. Zonas de una riqueza enorme en términos de flora, fauna y paisajes, que la mayoría de las veces representan el sello identitario de un área geográfica en particular, y que en definitiva motivan a gobiernos e instituciones a realizar grandes esfuerzos de conservación.

En la actualidad, ya casi nadie cuestiona los beneficios sociales, económicos y de distinto orden que brindan los parques nacionales, y cada vez parece tomarse más conciencia en torno a su relevancia. “Miles de personas cansadas, nerviosas y sobre civilizadas están comenzando a darse cuenta que ir a las montañas es volver a casa; que ese salvajismo es una necesidad; y que los parques y reservas de montaña son útiles no sólo como fuentes de madera y ríos de irrigación, sino también como fuentes de vida”, dijo alguna vez el visionario naturalista estadounidense John Muir hace más de un siglo. Hoy, sus palabras parecen resonar con más fuerza todavía.

Los parques nacionales se han transformado en el mayor símbolo de la conservación, y a nivel mundial existe la tendencia a incrementar la extensión de tierras y mares bajo algún grado de protección, ya sea estatal o privado. Chile no está ajeno a

aquella realidad, y en 2017 el país ha sumado un considerable número de áreas protegidas.

Tompkins Conservation donó 407.625 hectáreas al Estado de Chile, mientras que este anexó 949.368 hectáreas y así se crearán tres nuevos parques nacionales: Pumalín, Melimoyu y Patagonia. Junto con ello, se reclasificarán cuatro reservas nacionales como parques nacionales, creando el Parque Nacional Kawéskar y el Parque Nacional Cerro Castillo, y añadiendo las reservas nacionales Lago Cochrane y Lago Jeinimeni al nuevo Parque Nacional Patagonia.

Sin contar estos nuevos parques, que se encuentran en distintas fases de ejecución, el Sistema Nacional de Áreas Protegidas del Estado (SNASPE) de Chile cuenta actualmente con 36 parques nacionales, 49 reservas nacionales y 16 monumentos naturales. En total, cubren cerca de 14,6 millones de hectáreas, una superficie equivalente al 20% del territorio nacional.

De la mano con los parques nacionales, el turismo se ha convertido en una de las industrias de mayor crecimiento en Chile.

El número de turistas extranjeros se ha duplicado durante la última década, llegando a casi 4,5 millones en 2015. A este crecimiento se suma el aumento en el gasto diario promedio por persona, que subió de 43,7 dólares en 2001 a 64 dólares en 2015. Los números también han ido al alza en los parques nacio-

Every park is unique, from its geography to the number of tourists it receives. As such, some parks will require much more funding while other, lesser known areas need practically no resources for their management. There are still other parks that have characteristics which make them especially fragile, says Karl Yunis, director of Corporación Parques para Chile. “A place like Torres del Paine, with more wind and strong storms,” he says, “tends to have more problems with soil erosion and compaction, and its biomass is not easily restored.”

Yunis, an ecologist, says that many such fragile locations in the public-use sector are presently in very deteriorated conditions, negatively impacting not just the visitor experience, but the conservation of the area. “One could say that, overall, there is still time to correct the situation, but the trend and the prognosis are not good,” he says.

Chile’s government is carrying out an “Action Plan for Sustainable Tourism in Protected Areas” and is working — with substantial assistance from Parks Canada — on projects designed to build capacity, enhance value, upgrade infrastructure, and better provide information to visitors. As well, the Corporación Parques para Chile has created a manual for the development of plans for the public use of protected areas. Its goal is to diversify

Asimismo, sitios con determinadas características son mucho más frágiles. “Un lugar como Torres del Paine, con más viento y con tormentas fuertes, tiende a tener más problemas con la erosión y compactación de suelo, y su biomasa no se renueva con facilidad”, ejemplifica Karl Yunis, director de la Corporación Parques para Chile.

El ecólogo explica que estos lugares más frágiles están muy deteriorados en los sectores de uso público, lo que afecta no sólo la experiencia del visitante, sino también su estado de conservación. “Uno podría decir que por lo general aún hay tiempo para corregir la situación, pero la tendencia, y el pronóstico, no son positivos”, sostiene.

There is general consensus among officials about the need to create a nationally coordinated communication and marketing strategy to address visitation issues. Increasing visits to parks must also be accompanied by adequate infrastructure to avoid clashing with the aims of conservation. But in order to keep protected areas open year-round and maintain trails and facili-

onscientes de la problemática que enfrentan hoy en día, en la Subsecretaría de Turismo parecen tener claros los lineamientos. “La prioridad nacional es mejorar la experiencia de los visitantes, no la

ties in good condition while at the same time protect flora and fauna, Chile’s national parks and forest service (CONAF) needs much more park rangers to meet the task. Large investments are needed, and that may be the most urgent question the nation must address right now with its parks.

In Chile, approximately one dollar per hectare is invested in national parks. That is far too low when compared to other countries in the region like Costa Rica (30 dollars per hectare) or Peru (7 dollars per hectare), or when you consider that the large majority of tourists are attracted to traveling to the country primarily to visit its nature areas.

Luis Infante, regional director of CONAF Los Lagos, says that while budgets go up every year, the increasing demands on their

resources constantly mean they never have enough.

Infante explains that under CONAF’S current system “all of the funds from park admission fees go into a national budget that is later distributed jointly among the parks.” But for experts like Yunis, the funds ought to return to the park that generates them. Otherwise, he says, the parks that receive more visitors will be lacking economic and ecological incentives. “The local park managers are not motivated by tourism because they don’t see the benefits,” he says.

With a goal of giving new institutional support to national parks, there has been a bill moving through Chile’s Congress the past three years to create a Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service. It has received the input of hundreds of individuals,

para mantener habilitados permanentemente los senderos y puntos de atracción. Se requieren grandes inversiones, y ahí radica el problema: ¿dónde se obtienen los recursos?.

En Chile se invierte aproximadamente 1 dólar por hectárea en los parques nacionales, muy poco si se compara con países como Costa Rica (30) o Perú (7), o si se toma en cuenta que muchos de los visitantes que ingresan al país lo hacen por turismo de naturaleza. Luis Infante, director regional de Conaf Los Lagos, detalla que los presupuestos van creciendo año a año. Sin embargo, según explica, la demanda para mantener funcionando los parques es tan alta que pareciera que nunca es suficiente.

experts and organizations, but Fundación Terram, whose executive director, Flavia Liberona, calls its current incarnation a flawed bill. “We need the state to put more resources into the administration and management of national parks in Chile. That is just a basic need, yet this bill makes no significant improvements in that regard.”

In 2017, CONAF’s budget for the management of national parks was about 29 million dollars. Of that amount, the state contributed nearly half, and most of the rest stems from operational revenues (primarily from entrance fees). Yet, the government funding allotment for the agency falls short of even paying the 18.5 million dollars CONAF needs to pay annually for existing workers’ salaries. At minimum, Chile needs to raise

To further illustrate the problem, of the 101 parks, reserves and natural monuments in Chile, just 80 are provided with park rangers. According to a report

by El Mercurio newspaper, the national parks lacking in any personnel whatsoever make up 5,819,293 hectares, or twofifths of the country’s total protected areas. Another 1,330,591 hectares are managed by only one worker. Collectively, that means 49% of the nation’s parks and reserves have just one individual, or nobody at all, assigned to directly oversee their management.

Hernán Mladinic, executive director of Tompkins Conservation, considers the currently assigned budget for CONAF the “minimum floor” for the proper management of national parks, but he says it must be followed by the allocation of more resources in the future. Mladinic says Chile needs to consider that greater investment in national parks results in greater returns.

And he points to statistics from the U.S. National Parks Service

“In Chile, approximately 1 dollar per hectare is invested in national parks. In Costa Rica, 30 dollars per hectare.”

In 2016, close to 800,000 foreign tourists visited Chile’s national parks. Says Mladinic: “If these same tourists spend $US 125 per day, as the national tourism service (SERNATUR) says they do, then in just one day these tourists are contributing $US 100 million to the national economy, which is almost four times CONAF’S national budget for parks.”

Another issue are concessions in parks. For tourism minister Javiera Montes, these concessions represent a funding source that can be used to expand and improve services in

inimizing impact of park visitors is an increasingly difficult challenge given the continuing growth in tourism.

It will probably be necessary, for example, to implement daily capacity limits and online reservation systems in some parks.

This past summer, in Torres del Paine National Park, a pilot program that included an online booking system was introduced to control visits to shelters on the “W” trekking circuit, which has reached a saturation point that far exceeds the park’s capacity.

Magdalena García says such a system utilized by Torres del Paine is becoming indispensable. “All of the world’s more highly visited park systems have this. It ensures that you can have a good experience, and it facilitates good park management, because you know how many people are coming and where they are going.” The next big leap must involve prioritizing greater inclusion for handicapped, children and senior citizens.

It is also clear that an equilibrium needs to be achieved in terms of management, services,

n an essay about writing that he wrote for The New York Times in February 1983, Bruce Chatwin concludes with a brief story about how his first book came about. One afternoon, says Chatwin, he was visiting the architect and designer Eileen Gray at her apartment in Paris, when he noticed on the wall of her salon a map of Patagonia. ‘’I’ve always wanted to go there,’’ said Chatwin. ‘’So

have I,’’ Gray responded. ‘’Go there for me.’’

The seed was planted, and two years later, while in New York on assignment for The Sunday Times of London, on the spur of the moment he made the momentous decision to go for it. In a telegram to his editor, he wrote: “Ran away to South America/ I have been staying with a cousin in Lima for the past week and am going tonight to Buenos Ai-

The book, wrote Chatwin, would in part be a quest to find the origins of a piece of animal skin in his grandmother’s cabinet which she said was a “piece of brontosaurus” that her cousin, Charles Milward, sent to her from Punta Arenas, in Patagonia.

But even more, Chatwin said the book would “be dictated by the journey itself. As it will be – to say the least – unpredictable, there is no point in even trying to guess what it will hold. I shall start the diary the moment I cross the Rio Negro.”

The result of his 4-month journey was In Patagonia, which was published in October 1977 with an initial print run of 4,000 copies. Forty years later, it has been translated into numerous languages, sold millions of copies, and to this day it remains the one must-read travel book about this part of the world. The book is a classic that has changed travel writing itself. It has also left a lasting impact on the Patagonia region. Through its collection of beautifully-written short tales of life in Chilean and Argentine Patagonia, it served as a sort of an introduction for the rest of the world to a mostly unfamiliar land.

A restless nomad

harles Bruce Chatwin (May 13, 1940 - January 18, 1989) was born near Sheffield, England. At 18, his family got him a job at Sotheby’s auction house in London after he told them he intended to travel to Africa (“I wanted to be out and about. They thought I was young for that,”

Chatwin told the Washington Post in 1987.) At Sotheby’s, he picked up an extensive knowledge of art and an eye for detail that literary critics believe helped inform the sensitivity and color that would become hallmarks of his writing.

Later, intrigued by the lifestyle of nomads, he spent three years writing a book on the subject only to be ultimately rejected by his publisher. He was hired by The Sunday Times in 1972, where he fine-tuned his narrative skills on diverse assignments around the world, reporting on migrant workers in France, for example, or following India politician Indira Ghandi for a month while she campaigned.

Still, he remained fascinated by nomadism, particularly its spartan way of life with few possessions and constant movement. Wanderlust filled him. “He was in exile from everywhere,” his wife Elizabeth once said. Certainly, the theme of wandering and exile was prominent in his first book, an overnight success which immediately established Chatwin as one of his generation’s most important writers.

Handsome with blonde hair and blue eyes, clothed in khaki shorts and a leather bag, and intellectual, he cut a dashing figure.

The author won numerous awards for In Patagonia and altogether wrote six books including Songlines (1987), which was a bestseller. But Chatwin also courted controversy. Married and bisexual, he was one of the first prominent men in Great Britain to die from an AIDS-related illness on January 18, 1989, aged 48.

His reputation was diminished due to revelations about his personal life, and questions about the accuracy of his work.

Some of the people featured in the book In Patagonia later criticized the writer, contradicting his versions of events, characters and conversations.

Rather than making things up, biographer Nicholas Shakespeare believes Chatwin may have “embellished” on the truth or omitted details at times to suit the narrative.

For its time, In Patagonia was experimental in its format.

The 93 short chapters, some less than a page long, are loosely-related vignettes and visually descriptive snapshots of encounters the author had with a wide cast of characters.

Chatwin was in hot pursuit of his grandmother’s piece of brontosaurus (which in reality turned out to be the remnants of an ancient giant sloth from Milodon’s Cave near Torres del Paine), but the journey proved more than fascinating, too.

According to Susannah Clapp, who edited In Patagonia and is author of With Chatwin: Portrait of a Writer, Chatwin described the book’s structure as “Cubist” – the art form pioneered by Pablo Picasso where objects are broken up and reassembled in an abstract form with subjects depicted from multiple viewpoints.

Clapp worked with Chatwin for an entire summer reducing the final published book to a quarter of the original length of the manuscript. Speaking to the Patagon Journal, Clapp said that the book’s heterogeneous nature made it challenging to put together into some sort of homogeneous whole.

“You didn’t have a reason to go from one page to another,” she said.

While far from being a guidebook, Chatwin did capture the essence of Patagonian culture with his precise descriptions of local traditions and inclusion of pieces of local history into the story. There were anecdotes about the escape to Patagonia and cattle rustling escapades of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, for example, or recounting the cultural upheaval in Chile when land was nationalized in 1973 and how the employees of land belonging to the daughter of a Scottish descendant turn on her after having looked after the farm for years.

Although Chatwin’s book concentrates on the interiors and people of Patagonia, he did come away impressed with Patagonia’s natural landscape. A month into his trip, he wrote to his wife: “In the east you suddenly confront the great wall of the cordillera with bright turquoise lakes with unbelievable colors to the rocks. Sometimes it seems that the Almighty has been playing at making Neapolitan ice-cream. Imagine climbing (as I did) a cliff face 2000 feet high alternatively striped vanilla, strawberry and pistachio in bands of 100 feet or more. Imagine an upland lake where the rock face on one side is bright purple, the other bright green, with cracked orange mud and a white rim. You have to be a geologist to appreciate it.”

He also captures their loneliness, their bitterness from failed get-rich-quick schemes such as with a Scots sheep herder in Rio Pico, who says: “Ye can’t even talk to people in this country. Ye can’t tell ‘em they did a bad job or they’ll pack up and leave.”

Chatwin’s portrayal of unique characters is also remarkable, such as Anselmo, the young pianist from Gaimán. Writes Chatwin: “Anselmo lived with his parents behind their grocery shop.

The mother made the pasta herself. She was a big German woman and she cried a lot. He played the mazurka that Chopin dictated on his deathbed. The wind whistled in the street and the music ghosted from the piano as leaves over a headstone and you could imagine you were in the presence of genius.”

One of the final pictures of the book is of a boy from the Falkland Islands, who declares, “About time the Argentines took us over. We’re so bloody inbred.” That was five years before the Falklands war and shows, according to his

ccording to biographer Nicholas Shakespeare, Chatwin called his writing stories of searches, asking big questions about human existence and sharing unusual tales. Chatwin was an admirer of and has been compared to Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges who mixed narratives, anecdotes, history and local legends, the old with the new, the familiar with the exotic.

Chatwin’s alleged blurring of the lines between fact and fiction has been criticized by some, but for Javier Gonzalez, chief travel writer with Spanish magazine Revista Oxígeno, it is one of the book’s strengths. “The book marked the new journalism in travel literature. It’s a bit like how Tom Wolfe has been criticized for blurring the lines between fact and fiction. But that is exactly why I like it.”

Chatwin writing style has also been compared to Ernest Hemmingway - spare, clipped prose that is nonetheless able to sum a character or situation in a paragraph or a sentence with precise adjectives. Shakespeare says his approach to writing was almost like a literary Cartier-Bresson, the famous French street photographer, seeking to catch quick snapshots of ordinary people in black and white.

For his editor Susannah Clapp, Chatwin “helped to change the idea of what travel-writing could be.” Says Clapp: “More things could be discussed than before. The idea of being abroad, that Patagonians were expats not in their country of origin.

There was a sense of paradox, of obliqueness.”

Most of all, forty years after it was first published, the book’s vivid portrait of life in Patagonia is chiseled into the memories of its readers much like an unforgettable Rembrandt painting, or a Mozart symphony.

Las descripciones que hace de personajes únicos son extraordinarias, como la de Anselmo, el joven pianista de Gaimán. Escribe Chatwin: “Anselmo vivía con sus padres detrás de su tienda de comestibles. Su madre amasaba personalmente la pasta. Era una alemana corpulenta y lloraba mucho. Tocó la mazurca que Chopin dictó en su lecho de muerte. El viento silbaba en la calle y la música se elevaba espectralmente del piano como las hojas de una lápida sepulcral y uno podía imaginar que se hallaba en presencia de un genio”.

Una de las últimas imágenes del libro es la de un muchacho de las Islas Malvinas, quien declara: “Ya es hora de que nos ocupen los argentinos. Esta maldita consanguinidad”. Eso fue cinco años antes de la guerra de las Malvinas y muestra, según su editora, Susannah Clapp, que Chatwin era con “con frecuencia perspicaz, con frecuencia profético”.

Aunque el libro de Chatwin se concentra en los ámbitos interiores y la gente de la Patagonia, sí se sintió impresionado con el paisaje natural de la región. egún el biógrafo Nicholas Shakespeare, Chatwin llamaba a sus narraciones historias de búsqueda que formulaban grandes preguntas acerca de la existencia humana y compartían cuentos inusuales.

he first time I set my eyes on Patagonia was in 1991. I was 17-years-old and incredibly excited to explore the region. With my cousin Pedro next to me, we set off from Bariloche; we walked for 50 days to El Bolsón and then entered Chile through Futaleufú.

It was a journey of discovery through both wilderness and photography, and I have returned to Patagonia 12 times since then.

I love feeling the emptiness of the wild; in Patagonia I feel at one, at ease and at peace. Here, some of my dreams blend with reality. I am inspired spiritually and artistically, all my senses flourish. It is a place which makes me look even more closely at life, from another point of view. I feel the need to protect it.

Nature is the foundation, the essence, the remedy, the temple of my spirituality and my favorite subject in my work.

I adore nature in its every form, I can’t live far from it; it is my grandmaster. Nature is our home and, with so many people in the world, it is losing territory. We must protect it in its entirety, we must consume less, and we must recycle everything we can. We need more guardians of nature, more environmental awareness.

In my mind, Patagonia does not have political borders, rather a geographical and environmental identity still yet to be explored. My teachers are the forests, animals, mountains, lakes and glaciers in this magical corner of the world, and it will always inspire me.

hen one visitor emerged from the shallow waters of the Golfo Nuevo, at the town of Puerto Pirámides, he couldn’t stop smiling and exclaiming that “I swam with a penguin! I swam with a penguin!” At that time, in the early 1990s, Pirámides was a humble hamlet on Península Valdés and nearly all the visitors were Argentines. Many of these early tourists were beach-goers who almost coincidentally grew to appreciate the area’s abundant wildlife.

Today, Península Valdés is a destination for tourists from across the globe, who are especially attracted to the worldclass whale watching off of Pirámides.

uando un visitante emergió de las aguas poco profundas del Golfo Nuevo, en el pueblo de Puerto Pirámides, no pudo dejar de sonreír y exclamar: “¡Nadé con un pingüino! ¡Nadé con un pingüino!”. Every day catamarans and smaller rigid inflatables shuttle whale-watchers onto the gulf, and the semi-submergible “Yellow Submarine” even allows underwater views of the massive mammals through below-the-decks windows.

It’s also possible to kayak and paddle-board here, although there are restrictions—a guide is obligatory, for one—until whale-watching season ends.

The migratory southern right whales, arrive to the waters here to breed and give birth in the Southern Hemisphere winter, then leave as spring becomes summer. For visitors without their own vehicle, it’s only 4 km (2.5 miles) on foot or bike to a colony of southern sea lions, which are present all year at the base of banded sedimentary strata at Lobería Punta Pirámides.

from September to April. And the burrowing Magellanic penguins are spring and summer visitors; in fact, the seashore around Estancia San Lorenzo is now the continent’s largest breeding site, superseding the better-known Punta Tombo (where numbers are still substantial).

Like most of Argentina’s Atlantic coast, Península Valdés is a desert, with no surface streams and an annual rainfall of just 246 mm (less than ten inches). Strong winds and sheep estancias predominate in the interior of the peninsula, whose Salina Grande depression (42 meters below sea level) is one of the world’s lowest points. From the city of Puerto Madryn, there’s a paved highway and regular bus service to Pirámides, but to reach some of the best wildlife sites will require a vehicle. It’s a huge area, covering 3,625 square km (1,400 square miles), though most points of interest are on or near the coastline with its many broad and sandy beaches. To visit the major sights involves a circuit of roughly 400 km (about 250 miles), which is doable on

a long summer’s day, but still quite a distance.

Not so long ago, the roads beyond Puerto Pirámides were precarious, and getting stuck in the sand was a real risk. Today those roads are smoother gravel, and destinations like Punta Delgada and Punta Norte get mini-

resent throughout the Southern Hemisphere, the global population of southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) numbers about 10,000— but Península Valdés has the largest breeding population with more than 2,000 of this specimen calling it their habitat. These are baleen whales, filter-feeders that spend most of their

summer season feeding in and around Antarctica, but they seek a warmer habitat in winter (June to August) and that’s when southern right whales can be found congregating in the shallow waters of the Golfo Nuevo. The Golfo Nuevo’s narrow entrance helps shelter them from the open ocean and that, in turn, makes its calmer waters

ideal for breeding and giving birth.

That also makes accessible points like Puerto Pirámides and the beach at El Doradillo some of the very best places on the planet for whale watching. They come exceptionally close to shoreline there, affording spectacular close-up glimpses of these massive mammals.

Víctor Fratto, who operates tours to the ranch—which still raises sheep for wool and offers barbecued lamb in its restaurant—points out that this is now the world’s largest single Magellanic penguin colony. “Together with Estancia La Ernestina, there are 600,000 penguins, three-quarters of them at San Lorenzo.”

San Lorenzo’s guided tours, always with a ranger, include not just penguin-sighting but also ar-

Nowadays, there’s greater protection for the peninsula’s fauna and flora, but there are red flags. In a survey carried out

by National Geographic Traveler a few years back, the reserve drew praise for facilities “that are set up in a way to minimize their impact on the local environment.” Still, over the last two decades, Pirámides has swollen from a modest fish camp with limited services to a more substantial village, with many more hotels, restaurants and outdoor activities. Yet, this is a place that still relies on scarce groundwater for its survival, and while some of those new accommodations are indeed environmental friendly (the addition of solar

technology and state-of-the-art insulation are encouraging), the town’s growth is still a serious concern.

That said, there are also positive signs. According to Agustín Ayuso, owner of Rincón Chico, “We are in the process of converting Rincón Chico into a reserve. After 120 years and five generations raising livestock, we have removed our sheep and we’re going to dedicate ourselves exclusively to conservation.” This will mean additional protection not just for marine mammals and birds, including penguins, along the farm’s ocean frontage, but also for the underappreciated steppes and their wildlife—some 100 square kilometers (39 square miles) will no longer be subject to grazing.

En route to Pirámides, the visitor center at the Istmo de Ameghino, the narrow neck that links the peninsula to the mainland, displays beautifully reconstructed right whale skeletons, along with information on the rest of the peninsula’s wildlife. On the north side of the isthmus, in the smaller Golfo San José, the Isla de los Pájaros is a refuge for nesting seabirds—cormorants, gulls and penguins—that’s off-limits to

visitors but viewable through a stationary telescope.

Many whale-watchers and penguin-stalkers stay in the city of Puerto Madryn, which is just an hour south of Pirámides, and take advantage of tours that spend the day on the peninsula.

Madryn’s seaside Ecocentro is an even better place to learn about the South Atlantic environment than the peninsula’s visitor center, and the city has more abundant accommodations and dining options. In addition, two notable nature reserves are within cycling distance of town: to the north, whales approach the shore at Playa El Doradillo while, to the east, Punta Loma has a large sea lion colony and many nesting birds.

Puerto Madryn itself is also a key diving center, with numerous diving companies having offices on the beaches at the south end of downtown. In fact, some visitors would enthusiastically swear that the excursion-of-alifetime is diving or snorkeling with baby sea lions offshore here. Moreover, Madryn is also a popular site for windsurfing, and the shoreline in and around the city is a target for conventional beachgoers who, in summer, can be elbow to elbow.

Many if not most visitors arrive at the city of Trelew, which has the area’s largest airport, 65 km (40 miles) south of Puerto Madryn. There are regular buses on the Trelew-Madryn-Pirámides route, with several per day in summer, but access to the rest of Península Valdés requires taking a tour or hiring a rental car (on a long summer’s day, it’s possible to see almost everything). Tours may spend less time at the best wildlife sites and more at cafés and restaurants. Long-distance buses are a marathon—the trip from Buenos Aires to Puerto Madryn takes from 18 to 21 hours, though many buses have comfortable reclining seats and meal service.

La mayoría de los visitantes llegan a la ciudad de Trelew, que tiene el aeropuerto más grande de la zona, a 65 km al sur de Puerto Madryn. The rise of Mapuche cuisine El auge de la cocina mapuche

itting around the rim of a concrete pit with a crackling fire at its center, eager guests sip cafe trigo from earthenware mugs and munch on steaming sopaipillas slathered in maqui berry jam. In the kitchen, the proprietess, Luz Maria Huenipi, is preparing the main course, with its headliner ingredient: changle mushrooms foraged from the forests of the Araucania region of southern Chile.

As a descendent of the Mapuche, Chile’s mighty indigenous tribe who were able to beat back Spanish rule for some 300

years after colonization, Huenipi opens her home in Melipeuco so that visitors can get to know the food of her proud people.

And her smile warms the room even more than her delicious food. “I make food the way the Mapuche people have always made it,” she says.

In fact, Huenipi’s little restaurant in a small corner of southern Chile’s Lake District is part of a growing trend that is seeing Mapuche cuisine become a gastronomic tour de force throughout Chile and countries like the United States, England, Spain, Russia, and others.

In Chile, what was once a culinary niche confined mostly to Chile’s Lake District is now chic and has entered the higher echelons of national cuisine. A thriving national foodie scene is particularly devoted to exposing Chileans and tourists alike to Mapuche cuisine that is made authentically - and with an eye for cultural appreciation and understanding - but with modern twists.

Mapuche cooking is characterized by the use of fresh, seasonal ingredients that are foraged or caught, and cooking techniques like baking directly on the hot coals of a fire or in a clay oven. At the heart and soul of Mapuche food is a connection to the land and respect for what it provides. “We are a people who take care of nature,” Huenipi says.

Typical ingredients one might encounter during a meal include quinoa, mote, changle mushrooms, sopaipillas, fish or seafood. And of course there is merken, a Mapuche traditional spice made from dried and ground up aji cacho de cabra, coriander, cumin, and salt that has become so popular in recent years it is now a mass market product sold in supermarkets everywhere in the country.

Top chefs in Chile’s capital city of Santiago are also having great success with Mapuche cuisine. The offerings run the gamut from a homestyle buffet banquet at the home of “mapuchef” Jose Luis Calfucura to more upscale settings like Restaurante Peumayen.

Perhaps the best known example of Mapuche cooking can be found at Borago, the world-renowned Santiago restaurant of Rodolfo Guzmán.

In addition to enticing his diners with native products like maqui berries and seaweed, and methods like cooking with embers, Guzmán pays tribute to

the Mapuche culinary heritage by actively foraging the land for such ingredients with his CONECTÁZ team. Borago artfully crafts meals that faithfully bring Chile’s bountiful and beautiful terroir from the countryside to the plate.

In addition to being fine chefs, it’s also Guzmán and Calfucura’s willingness to experiment with tradition and offer innovative takes on the classic dishes that puts them ahead of the curve.

But, as Calfucura has said in past interviews, Mapuche cuisine ultimately boils down to staying connected with the past and using good, wholesome ingredients.

But it’s not just Chilean foodies hopping on the bandwagon, several restaurants in the United States have started introducing customers to the delights of merken and other traditional foods, like at the Mapuche Na-

Made from ají cacho de cabra (goat’s horn peppers), it is dried, partly smoked and blended with coriander seeds and salt. This earthy spice brings out subtle flavors in a variety of dishes, and its increasingly a mainstay of Chilean cuisine used on steaks, seafood, mashed potatoes, and more. Now, thanks in part to ample coverage in international media in recent years, merkén is also a global trend and finding a spot on menus at top restaurants and spice racks the world over.

The end of HidroAysén

fter a contentious, tenyear battle, the companies pushing HidroAysen -- a massive hydroelectric project planned for the Baker and Pascua rivers in Chilean Patagonia -- have definitively withdrawn their plans.

In November, the Italybased electric company Enel and Chile’s privately-held Colbun energy company formally announced that they will return their water rights for the dams back to the state. “We have been working with Colbun on this for several months and we have agreed to put an end to the HidroAysén project,” Herman Chadwick, president of Enel

Chile confirmed to Santiago newspaper La Tercera.

Amongst their reasons, the companies cited a changing energy market that made the dams economically inviable.

As well, Chile’s court recently upheld the June 2014 decision of the outgoing Michelle Bachelet government to reject the environmental permits for the $10 billion project which had contemplated building five dams to produce 2750 MW of energy.

If the dams had been built, they would have not only destroyed two wild Patagonian rivers but also cleared a path two football fields wide and 1,912-kilometers (about 1,200

The move was celebrated as a tremendous victory for the Patagonia Sin Represas campaign, a coalition of more than 70 environmental and citizen organizations that had mobilized a grassroots movement in Chile on an unprecedented scale. Juan Pablo Orrego, president of Santiago-based green group Ecosistemas and international coordinator of the Council for the Defense of Patagonia (CDP), hailed the end of HidroAysen as “the end result of a 100% a citizen, group effort.” Said Orrego: “We saved Patagonia from an anachronistic, obsolete and completely unnecessary project. We also

Chile Environment Minister Marcelo Mena also welcomed the companies’ decision, commenting on Twitter that “ever since we closed the door on HidroAysen, energy investment in the country has doubled, and in the case of non-conventional renewable energies the investment has increased five-fold and its prices have lowered by 75%.”

The conflict over HidroAysen has borne some fruit, though; it has forever changed the way Chile thinks about the future of its energy supply and the development path of the Patagonia region.

Llanquihue: City of Wetlands Llanquihue: Ciudad de Humedales

ntil recently, Llanquihue was known moreso for being the site of large industrial plants. But the namesake city of Chile’s second-largest lake is changing, both in infrastructure and the mentality of its citizens, thanks in part to the work that the Fundación Legado Chile is doing together with local residents, the city council and other institutions through the “Llanquihue: City of Wetlands” program.

Llanquihue has high ecological value. This small city located just north of Puerto Varas in Chile’s Los Lagos region is home to a complex network of wetlands that are also the source of the Maullín River, a conservation priority area for Chile and home

to more than 100 native bird species. The new program will develop and implement strategies to conserve, protect, and restore wetlands that have been neglected or filled in due to urbanization.

“Conservation problems detonate in the cities, and so if one makes a change within the city, the impact can be farreaching” says Andrés Riveros, local coordinator of the program.

Environmental action plans, green infrastructure, clean up at the Maullin’s source, environmental education, and involving the community are the fundamental pillars of this program, which aims to become a model that can be replicated in other threatened areas. More info: www.legadochile.cl

limate change might be in denial by Trumpians in Washington, but a tragic disaster at Villa Santa Lucia in December illustrates the real dangers of a warming world.

A fast-moving mudslide connected at least in part to glacial retreat on the mountain that rises above this small village of 271 people on the Carretera Austral, located about 75 km (46 miles) south of Chaiten, has left at least 18 people dead and completely destroyed 28 homes. After heavier rainfall than normal in the area, the glacial moraine let loose.

“Large pieces of ice were observed in the ravine,” said Marcela Ulloa of Chile’s national mining and geological service (SERNAGEOMIN).

A 2008 study had warned of possible landslides endangering Villa Santa Lucia, says Greenpeace Chile, which is calling for a new, nationwide assessment of such dangers for other communities as well sited near melting glaciers.

or field ornithologist and nature photographer Claudio Vidal, the black-chested buzzard eagles he witnessed when his mother gave him his first pair of binoculars were the inspiring start of a lifelong passion and professional vocation. “To be in connection with nature when you are a kid is such a wonderful opportunity for your education, for the development of all your senses,” recalls Vidal.

n 1973, three Yosemite climbers and I were forced to camp and hike for several weeks in Torres del Paine as the winds, snowfall and the infamous Patagonian rime or “refrigerator ice” kept us off the peaks. During this down time, the one serious fisherman in our group, Yvon Chouinard, hiked down the Rio Serrano, but brought back no fish. He just shrugged and claimed he was “throwing them back.” “Yeah, Right!,’” we chided. “You didn’t catch anything,” we told him. That was my introduction to catch and release fishing. (However, the next day –under pressure from the rest of us-- he brought back two of the “smaller” fish he’d caught: beautiful sea-run brown trout. My journal reminds me it was “about 3 kilos, a substantial feast for us all.”).

And Chouinard‘s outdoor clothing company, Patagonia, has escalated along with it, and inevitably added a line of fly fishing gear. Fortunately, the prescient fishermen like Chouinard were aware that “tossing fish back” is an obvious, much needed practice if the burgeoning numbers of fisherman are going to continue to have quality fishing well into the future.

Chouinard recently told me about the waste he saw while fishing in remote Tierra del Fuego: “I have fished the Rio Grande many times, beginning in the 1970s before there were lodges. Doug Tompkins and I once walked along the Rio Chico for five days where we ran across some “gear” (heavy lines with huge brass spoons and multiple hooks) fishermen who had about 10 big sea run browns hung up on a clothesline to photograph.

Then they threw them away!”

I had a similar experience in the 1980’s while scouting a route into remote Lago Blanco. Following the Rio Grande, in Chilean territory along a muddy wagon trail, recently rutted by fresh jeep tracks, we came upon a camp of fishermen.

They too were using “heavy metal” tackle, and had caught several huge brown trout, some over three feet long. They’d hauled the fish to shore, and then just left them to rot.

This is no longer tolerable. Ethics change as the demands on the resources change. Too many people are killing too few fish.

I come from a fishing family in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Trout and venison were plentiful and fed my folks through the Great Depression and then through food shortages during World War Two. As a kid, I could walk from our home in town to a creek and catch fish, often enough for the family table. Fish, also venison and elk, were

Simply cut the leader as close to the hook as you can. The fish will eventually shed the hook.

2) Playing the fish While we all enjoy a good fight in a fish, overplaying and exhausting causes a build-up of lactic acid and reduces its chance of survival recovery, even if it swims off immediately after release. A tippet that is too light for the fight is likely to exhaust the fish.

3) Use a rubber net Landing nets are a reliable way to land and release a fish without handling it and unnecessarily stressing it.

Rubber nets are preferable to nylon nets in which fish can become entangled. Try to remove the hook with the fish submerged and in the net.

4) Handling the fish Avoid beaching the fish where it can get injured by sand and stones. Get into the water and handle the fish with wet rather

A fish’s head is fragile and should be protected from knocks. Take care to avoid contact with the eyes and gills.

5) Minimize photo-ops Limit the amount of time you have the fish out of the water, which means preparing for the photo shoot. Hold the fish only slightly out of the water for the photo and for no longer than 10-second intervals. If you can’t get the photo after several attempts, get the picture the next time.

6) Reviving the fish Never drag the fish back and forth through the water but face it upstream into the current, allowing the water to flow naturally across its gills to obtain oxygen. Avoid reviving the fish in sediment-filled water.

A similar ethic of “leave enough for tomorrow, and for others” seems to be universal among native peoples and those who live off the land. With our current population explosion, fishing regulations - such as bag limits, season restrictions and habitat management - have become essential all over the world.

If you’re fishing just for sport, where all the rewards lie in stalking, catching and landing the fish, then admire them and put them back to catch another day. Do it for yourself and for your fellow fishermen. As Lee Wulff, who

Wulff’s counterpart in Chile is Adrian Dufflocq, who in the early 1960s pioneered the country’s first fly fishing lodge in Chile, Cumilahue Lodge, near Lago Ranco. Dufflocq calls for overall protection of the river environment. In particular, the boom in salmon farming in southern Chile has at times tried to expand to fresh water lakes, with all of their negative ecological consequences such as the spread of disease and the escaped salmon threatening the survival of other fish. Says Dufflocq: “Quality sport fishing and tourism are not compatible with the existence of fish farming in the same waters.”

My fishing pal in Colorado, Curt Carpenter, tells me that by 1974, fishing was nearly ruined —“fished out’ -- in most streams around Aspen and western Colorado. In desperation, three local men decided to act, and got fishing regulations, seasons, bag limits and enforcement in place. This first experiment was a three-mile (5 km) section on the Roaring Fork River.

The result: the fish got a chance to rest, feed, breed and multiply. Within a couple seasons the catch and release rules were also soon adopted on several

other rivers. Along with it, sport fishing suddenly became a new and lucrative adventure tourism attraction, a cash crop for local hotels, restaurants, and shops, and employment for fishing guides. As well, hatcheries have been established to re-stock fish, and biologists have found ways to

Chile is on the right track.

Yvon Chouinard says that the fishing is better now in Chile than it ever has been. In part, that’s because fish that were introduced in the 1930s are now more naturalized, but even more so it’s because catch and release fishing is becoming the norm, not the exception. “With fly fishing more popular the conservation ethic has also changed now,” says Chouinard.

Recycling of any resource is admirable. Recycling of live fish is downright benevolent.

Mi compañero de pesca en Colorado, Curt Carpenter, dice que en 1974 la pesca estaba casi arruinada en la mayoría de los arroyos alrededor de Aspen y el oeste de Colorado. En su desesperación, tres hombres locales decidieron actuar, y obtuvieron los reglamentos de pesca con la aplicación de las temporadas y los límites de captura. Este primer experimento fue en una sección de 5 kilómetros en el río Roaring Fork.

El resultado: los peces tuvieron la oportunidad de descansar, alimentarse y multiplicarse. En un par de temporadas, las reglas de captura y devolución también se adoptaron en otros ríos. Además, se han establecido criaderos para restablecer las poblaciones de peces, y los biólogos han encontrado formas de restaurar los entornos fluviales.

Chile está en el camino correcto. Yvon Chouinard dice que la pesca ahora es mejor que nunca en el país. En parte, eso se debe a que los peces que se introdujeron en la década de 1930 ahora están más naturalizados, pero aún más porque la pesca de captura con devolución se está convirtiendo en la norma, no la excepción. “Con la pesca con mosca más popular, la ética de la conservación también ha cambiado ahora”, dice Chouinard.

El reciclaje de cualquier recurso es admirable. El reciclaje de peces vivos es francamente benevolente.

or more than a century, the puma has been perceived as a threat in Argentina particularly by the livestock industry. Conflict with man has brought this feline species almost to the verge of extinction. In some provinces there is still a system in place whereby the government will pay compensation for dead pumas or foxes. Even today, the stories of hunters, ranchers and farmers who still enjoy a puma steak are common.

Despite all of this, puma populations are starting to recover in areas where they had

previously all but disappeared.

This apparently has something to do with a drastic fall in the level of sheep farming and an increase in the population of native guanacos (puma’s preferred diet) which are gradually coming back to the Patagonian pampas.

But it also has something to do with the fact that in some areas, such as the Península Valdés, the hunting of native species has been outlawed, something that gained importance in 1999 when the area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. That said, there are still insufficient studies of puma populations to give us

Legislation regarding protection of pumas differs in each province so that while hunting these animals is illegal in some provinces, in others they are seen as a pest and hunting them is allowed all year round.

In that context, Fundación Protejamos Patagonia (Let’s Protect Patagonia Foundation) has been formed by residents of the Península Valdés with the aim of promoting environmental action that is complementary and supports the World Heritage Site status. In the short term, the idea is to promote projects that help mitigate the conflict between farmers and native fauna.

Given the clear benefits that ecotourism and wildlife observation has brought to the area, the foundation aims to establish some form of coexistence, a balance between livestock production and the survival of native fauna. In fact, many local farmers have begun to turn their focus to tourism, conservation and sustainability.

And the results are evident.

A century ago the Peninsula Valdés coastline was a hub for the hunting of whales, penguins, wolves and elephant seals. Today, ecotourism has led to a change in paradigm, becoming an important source of income for local inhabitants and attracting thousands of visitors every year to enjoy one of the best places in the world to observe whales and marine life. This has increased awareness of the importance of nature conservation and is a perfectly replicable model for top predators on the Península Valdés, most importantly the puma.

Relying mainly on donations, the Fundación Protejamos Patagonia has taken its first action, purchasing two pairs of livestock guardian dogs, which, when raised with the sheep, prove an invaluable asset in protecting the flock by driving away top predators. This is seen as one of the initial steps to mitigate conflict between sheep herders and native species and will be the first of many steps in pursuit of conservation.

Bajo este panorama nace la Fundación Protejamos Patagonia, una ONG creada recientemente por profesionales de Península Valdés, cuyo objetivo principal es promover acciones medioambientales que acompañen y sustenten la declaratoria de sitio Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

A corto plazo, la intención es promover proyectos que ayuden a mitigar el conflicto entre los ganaderos y la fauna nativa.

busca es establecer una forma de coexistencia, un equilibrio entre la producción ganadera y la fauna autóctona. De hecho, no son pocos los ganaderos que han comenzado a dar un giro hacia el turismo, la conservación y la sustentabilidad.

La evidencia existe. La costa de Península Valdés resulta un ejemplo cercano y palpable.

Hace un siglo se cazaban ballenas, pingüinos, lobos y elefantes marinos en toda la zona. Hoy, el ecoturismo ha llevado a cambiar el paradigma, transformándose en una importante fuente de ingresos que invita a miles de visitantes por año a disfrutar de uno de los mejores lugares del mundo para observar ballenas y fauna marina. Esto ha realzado la importancia de la conservación, un modelo perfectamente replicable para los depredadores tope de Península Valdés, con el puma como piedra angular.

Con las donaciones como el motor principal, la Fundación Protejamos Patagonia tiene previsto como primer proyecto la compra de dos parejas de perros protectores de rebaños, los cuales han probado su valía cuando son criados junto a las ovejas, protegiéndolas al ahuyentar a los depredadores tope. Así se busca dar el puntapié inicial para mitigar el conflicto entre ganadores y fauna nativa. Será el primer paso de muchos otros en pos de la conservación.
