ather Alberto de Agostini, the Salesian priest who during the first half of the 19th century wrote 22 books about his explorations in the Patagonian Andes, put it most eloquently when describing this region’s mountains: “Hundreds of peaks still sleep a deep sleep without any human ever penetrating their silent kingdom, an exclusive domain of winds and storms. And nevertheless they are the most beautiful mountains of the world.”

The mountains of Patagonia are “giants” not just for their sheer size. There is that unparalleled beauty, as Agostini so rightly states. They may not be the highest peaks on the planet, but the extreme conditions and vertical walls found at this southernmost end of the planet make their summits among the world’s most difficult to scale. And then there is the sheer expanse of the Andes, the longest mountain range on Earth. This issue of Patagon Journal is dedicated to the magnificent Patagonian mountains, and the bold climbers and mountaineers that seek out their rewards.

In Issue 6 we also feature, among other topics, the stunning, fine art photography of Argentina’s Celine Frers, the history behind Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid in Patagonia, and an exclusive interview with Chilean Senator Antonio Horvath, who not only is the main man behind the building of the Carretera Austral, the world’s most beautiful road, but a true hero for Patagonia’s and Chile’s environment.

Like the climbers who take calculable risks when attempting to scale a Patagonian peak, since our first issue was published in late December 2011 we at Patagon Journal have taken a risk in launching this magazine. And frankly, with few paying advertisers so far, most of the time it has often felt like we have been solo climbing without a rope. Hence, we’re now branching out with new offerings, including travel programs and books. Please consider these new endeavors, subscribe, donate, or advertise to reach our growing audience. Thank you.

l padre Alberto de Agostini, sacerdote salesiano que durante la primera mitad del siglo 19 escribió 22 libros sobre sus exploraciones en los Andes Patagónicos, puso la mayor elocuencia al describir las montañas de esta región: "Cientos de picos todavía duermen un sueño profundo sin que ningún humano haya penetrado nunca su silencioso reino, un dominio exclusivo de los vientos y las tormentas. Y, sin embargo, son las más bellas montañas del mundo".

Las montañas de la Patagonia son "gigantes" no sólo por su enorme tamaño. Poseen una belleza sin par, como Agostini afirma muy acertadamente. Puede que no sean los picos más altos del planeta, pero las condiciones extremas y paredes verticales que se encuentran en este confín austral del planeta hacen que sus cumbres estén entre las más difíciles del mundo para los escaladores. Y luego está la gran extensión de los Andes, la cadena montañosa más larga del planeta. Este número de Patagon Journal está dedicada a las magníficas montañas de la Patagonia, y los audaces escaladores y montañistas que buscan sus recompensas.

Love and hate

Amor y odio

or outdoor enthusiasts, the relationship with the mountainous areas of Patagonia is usually one of love-hate. Their hate is easy to understand, that’s because the difficult access, poor information, persistent winds, bad weather, cold and uncertainty, these are not things we are likely to seek out for our vacations. Thus, it is harder to understand why so many fall in love with this wild territory, something that can only be explained in the depths of what it means to be human.

The charm is born from these same difficulties, where the arduous access transforms its remote corners into a privilege, an exclusive destination that is paid with perseverance.

The poor information opens the door to explore: unknown valleys and mountains that await a step beyond what you see in the trekking guides.

The wind makes you feel the invincible power of nature firsthand.

And when you're not the one who controls your steps, it is then easy to realize that you are part of something bigger.

The climate transforms every opportunity into the most precious gift. Those who have experienced it know that a month of storms pays for one day of perfect weather, with sunshine and endless blue skies.

The cold dresses the mountains in glaciers and snow fields, and adorns the peaks with the most whimsical filigree of glass. An ever virgin region, where there are no footprints and your steps will always be first.

Some rock giants are docile and the dwarves easily confuse their stature with what they have borrowed, and seeing themselves as dominating the world are duped by a false illusion of conquest. They believe that they have have defeated the giant, who sweetly, had gifted them a ladder to heaven.

Yet there is another race of giants, one temperamental and capricious, and one that enjoys playing with the clouds and struggling with the wind. Among these giants, the dwarves understand their true dimension, and learn that it is impossible to conquer them. But by dealing with their whims and cultivating an understanding of the temperament of these giants, eventually they will achieve the blessing of contemplating the world upon their shoulders, deeply enjoying the gift of a vision that redefines beauty, and discovering that they gained much more than they left on the trail behind them.

This is the race of "giants" found in Patagonia.

It’s the uncertainty that makes the difference between a trip and an adventure.

Little giants

S

ome defend the magnitude of Patagonian climbing by arguing that despite only reaching 4,000 meters, Patagonia offers walls with slopes that leave nothing to envy the Himalayas, or that the "alpine" starts at sea level, where numerous glaciers shed their ice.

If there is anything that Patagonia teaches us it is that the experience a mountain offers a climber cannot be measured in meters. It is something that would require a far more complex met-

ric that, if it did exist, would be absolutely meaningless.

This is not to say that the great mountains do not offer a particular attraction with their size and promise of limitless horizons. It means that other smaller peaks, often hidden, offer huge challenges that can mark a before and after in one’s life.

Herein we will talk of the giants that have attracted the traveler’s attention the most: Mount San Valentín, which dominates the horizons of Aysen; San Lorenzo, which dizzily rises between forest and prairie; El Chalten -or Fitz Roy -a mythical rock monolith that has beckoned climbers from around the world. Or Paine

But there are other giants hidden a little further from the unitiated eye. We must not forget to mention: Cuerno de Plata (3725 m), Cerro Arenales (3365 m), Cerro Steffen (3050 m), Lautaro volcano (3380 m), and Mount Shipton (2568 m), among many others. Large or small, they are all huge when it comes to adventure.

The right time?

Traditionally, the climbing experience is broken up into parts, as if the mountain were just a rocky substratum, while the snow, ice and climate were considered outside elements. It has always seemed absurd to me to speak of the "right time" to climb a mountain. Which traditionally is when the mountain is stripped of most of its ice and snow, and the weather is milder. Under these standards in Patagonia there is no appropriate time, and if there is, nobody knows when that is, and it will not last more than a couple of weeks.

At any time of the year you can find wind, sun, rain or snow. And if

lgunos defienden la magnitud de las escaladas patagónicas argumentando que a pesar de alcanzar sólo los 4.000 metros, ofrecen paredes con desniveles que no tienen nada que envidiar a los Himalayas, o que el terreno “alpino” comienza a nivel del mar, donde numerosos glaciares derraman sus hielos.

Si hay algo que nos enseña la Patagonia al respecto, es

que la experiencia que una montaña ofrece al escalador no se puede medir en metros.

Es algo que requeriría una métrica mucho más compleja que, de existir, sería un absoluto sinsentido.

Esto no quiere decir que las grandes montañas no ofrezcan un atractivo especial, con su talla y su promesa de horizontes ilimitados. Significa que también otras cimas de menor tamaño, muchas veces escondidas, ofrecen desafíos gigantes que pueden marcar un antes y un después en la vida.

Hablaremos aquí de los gigantes que más han llamado la atención del viajero: el monte

San Valentín, que domina los horizontes de Aysén; el San Lorenzo, levantándose vertiginosamente entre el bosque y la pampa; el Chaltén -o Fitz Roy- un mítico monolito de roca que ha convocado escaladores de todo el mundo. O el Paine Grande, solitario en sus alturas pero contemplado, año a año, por miles de viajeros, y finalmente, el monte Sarmiento, un rey olvidado en la Tierra del Fuego.

Sin embargo, hay otros gigantes, aquellos que se esconden un poco más lejos de las miradas profanas. Creo que no podemos dejar de mencionar el Cuerno de Plata (3725 m), el

cerro Arenales (3365 m), cerro Steffen (3050 m), volcán Lautaro (3380 m) y monte Shipton (2568 m), entre muchos otros, más grandes o más pequeños, pero todos enormes cuando de aventuras se trata.

¿Época adecuada?

there is something of true certainty about the Patagonian weather, it is that it tends to surprise you when you least expect it.

In this wilderness there is nothing left but to understand the mountain as a whole; a dynamic object made of clouds, rock, wind, ice, forests, rain, mud and snow.

An unpredictable entity, without seasons nor established routes.

In climbing, skills like speed and the ability to address technical terrain are important, but they are relegated to the background when it comes to summiting a Patagonian Giant. Tolerance of uncertainty and failure, resilience, patience, and the ability to improvise are essential qualities in order to venture into this merciless region and return happy.

In addition to knowing how to use the ice ax and crampons, it is essential to know how to read a map, navigate with a GPS or compass, sew, patch, and understand the art of "duct tape.” It also helps to understand how to read and interpret weather information, although it’s not as important as the willingness to take full advantage of the prevailing conditions, whether good or bad.

The giants of Patagonia offer, without doubt, one of the most extraordinary experiences anywhere for people who love mountains.

They present a challenge to the body, mind and spirit. They give generously in proportion to what is asked. The greatest danger is not the wind nor ice, but leaving a piece of one’s heart, falling under the spell, losing sanity or whatever it may be that causes some migratory beings to return again and again to these latitudes battered by storms, chasing a mysterious illusion that hides among the clouds and always calls from the mountain peaks.

Además de saber usar el piolet y los crampones, es fundamental saber leer un mapa,

navegar con GPS -o con brújula para los más tradicionales-, coser, parchar y ser entendido en las artes del “duct tape”.

También ayuda saber leer e interpretar información meteorológica, aunque no tanto como la voluntad de aprovechar al máximo las condiciones reinantes, tanto en el buen como el mal tiempo.

Abrazar la idea de que el clima es parte del desafío ayuda a enfrentarlo con la misma mentalidad que se enfrenta la escalada.

Quienes salen de la carpa únicamente cuando hay buen tiempo estarán condenados a largos períodos de inactividad, y – con frecuencia - regresar sin sus metas cumplidas. Sin embargo, hay que saber guardarse

cuando la furia de la tormenta está desatada y pierde sentido forzar el avance.

n aura of mystery hangs over Mount San Valentín. The highest summit of the Patagonian Andes, it carries the mysticism that comes with being unexplored. Located on the northern fringe of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field, and inside Laguna San Rafael National Park, this mountain is extremely attractive for those interested in mountaineering adventure.

Not even today’s technological advances has made it possible fo us to know much about this lonely and inaccessible region, full of peaks and totally virgin walls. The great difficulties in terms of logistics to even get there has afforded few visitors to the majestic domain of San Valentin. Fewer still dare to climb this giant of Patagonia.

"We started via Laguna San Rafael, thus we had to climb this glacier completely from the coast to the plateau of the Patagonian Ice Field. That was the hardest part of the route. We had to make numerous trips to bring up equipment and food from our first camp on the ice,” recalls Eugenio Guzman, a member of the expedition that summited San Valentín in the winter of 2001. It took them ten days to get to the ice plateau from which, by skis and sleds, they advanced with much greater speed to cover the nearly 25 miles (40 km) that still separated them from the mountain.

To summit this gaint, it requires at least a month, and not just because of the geographical conditions and the high elevation: "No matter whether it is summer or winter, the weather here can be a key factor to success or failure. If there is not good preparation and logistics, it is not difficult to die there,” warns Guzman, also know as “Kiko.”

Ubicado en los márgenes septentrionales del Campo de Hielo Norte, al interior del Parque Nacional Laguna San Rafael, este cerro resulta sumamente atractivo para aquellos interesados en el montañismo de aventura.

Ni los avances tecnológicos de hoy en día han permitido un conocimiento acabado de esta solitaria e inaccesible región, plagada de cimas y paredes totalmente vírgenes. Las grandes dificultades en términos de logística, mantienen casi prístinos los majestuosos dominios del San Valentín. Pocos son los que se atreven a incursionar en los parajes de este gigante de la Patagonia.

“Nosotros comenzamos desde la Laguna San Rafael, por lo que debimos remontar este glaciar completamente desde la costa hasta la meseta de Campos de Hielo. Esa fue la parte más dura y trabada de la ruta. Tuvimos que realizar numerosos viajes de porteo con equipo y comida desde nuestro primer campamento en el hielo”, recuerda Eugenio Guzmán, miembro de la expedición que hizo cumbre en invierno del 2001. Diez días tomaron en llegar hasta una planicie desde la cual, mediante esquíes y trineos, avanzaron con mayor rapidez para cubrir los cerca de 40 kilómetros que todavía los separaban del San Valentín.

Alrededor de un mes tarda cualquier expedición que intente este coloso, y esto no es sólo por las condiciones geográficas y su gran desnivel. “No importa si es verano o invierno, el tiempo en este lugar puede ser un factor clave para el éxito o fracaso. Si no hay una buena preparación y logística, no es difícil morir ahí”, advierte ‘Kiko’.

Despite such circumstances, both climbers agree that it is an experience like none other. "I have reached summits in the Himalayas, Antarctica, Alaska, Greenland and many other places, but Patagonia, especially the northern and southern Patagonian Ice Fields and the Cordillera Darwin, are places without peer," says Guzman. Meanwhile, Besser says of San Lorenzo that it was "the first time the top of a mountain provoked in me tears of emotion.

Pese a este tipo de eventualidades, ambos montañistas coinciden en que se trata de una experiencia sin igual. “He alcanzado cumbres en el Himalaya, Antártica, Alaska, Groenlandia y muchos otros lugares, pero Patagonia y en especial Campos de Hielo Norte, Sur y la Cordillera de Darwin son lugares únicos”, remata Guzmán. n the distance, Mount San Lorenzo emerges as an imposing mass of ice and rock. Situated to the east of the Patagonian Andes, this solitary mountain is divided between the humidity of Chilean forests and the arid pampas of Argentina. A summit that, like many others in this untamed region, is oft covered by a blanket of clouds, the white haze charged with protecting the mountain’s pristine beauty.

It attracts climbers from around the world but this colossus of Patagonia has a short history of ascents. The Chilean climber Pablo Besser is one of the mountaineers who has most ventured into the realm of San Lorenzo. After two previous attempts, he finally reached the summit of this giant in 2004, making the first winter ascent.

Características que atraen a escaladores de todo el mundo, pero que también tienen a este coloso de la Patagonia con un cortísimo historial de ascensiones. El chileno Pablo Besser es probablemente uno de los montañistas que más se ha aventurado en los dominios del Cochrane.

Tras dos experiencias previas, finalmente en el 2004 logró alcanzar la cumbre de este gigante, en lo que se transformó en el primer ascenso invernal.

“El San Lorenzo fue mi primer intento a un cerro de la Patagonia, en 1994. Sólo llegamos a la cascada de seracs y el mal tiempo nos impidió ascender, pero a la vez tenía poca experiencia y habría sido difícil subirlo”, recuerda el también médico nacional. Asimismo, agrega que “luego volví el 2001, pero por la arista este y fue bien peligroso. Una avalancha me pasó por encima y gracias a una roca que me protegió pude salvarme”. Por su parte, la hazaña del 2004 tampoco estuvo exenta de complejidades. Agotados y derrotados tras un intento fallido, Besser y sus compañe-

"San Lorenzo was my first attempt of a mountain in Patagonia, in 1994. We only reached the seracs icefall and bad weather kept us from ascending further, but I also had little experience and it would have been difficult,” recalls Besser, who is a tramautologist by profession. Seven years later, on his second attempt, Besser attempted a new route "by the east edge and it was very dangerous. An avalanche passed over me and thanks to a rock that protected me, I was able to save myself. " The successful 2004 feat was also not without its difficulties.

Exhausted and defeated after a failed attempt, Besser and his expedition partners decided to spend the night on the north shoulder before trying again. "We dug a cave in a few long, cold hours. Once inside, with -30 ° Celsius outside, we heated water and filled some bottles to help ward off the cold. At dawn, the beautiful summit appeared with

Although winter is cold and there's more snow, Besser says the "climate is milder and the periods of good weather are much longer and stabler than in summer."

However, he stressed that this is a highly complex ascent, hence interested climbers must first gain experience with smaller peaks in Patagonia and be well-prepared in terms of equipment, climbing techniques and physical condition.

"This is not a place for beginners, only for a mountaineer with years of experience," he emphasizes. Adding that, in his case, his previous crossing of both the entire Southern and Northern Patagonian Ice Fields were the kind of “necessary experience to ascend Patagonian giants like San Lorenzo.”

Si bien en invierno es gélido y hay mayor cantidad de nieve, Pablo Besser asegura que el “clima es más benigno y los periodos de buen tiempo son mucho más lar-

gos y estables que en verano”. No obstante, recalca también que se trata de un ascenso sumamente complejo, por lo que recomienda comenzar primero con cumbres menores de la Patagonia, ya que se debe ir preparado en términos de equipamiento, técnicas de escalada y condiciones físicas.

“No es un lugar para principiantes, sino que para un montañista con ciertos años de experiencia”, enfatiza. En este mismo sentido, sentencia que “el cruce completo del Campo de Hielo Sur y luego el cruce invernal de Campos de Hielo Norte, son expediciones bien fuertes que, sin duda, nos dieron la experiencia necesaria para ascender colosos patagónicos como el San Lorenzo”. iewed from the pampa, Mount Fitz Roy, or Chaltén, the name given to it by the indigenous Telhueches, rises up like an impassable fortress. Of all the spires and towers that surround it, this hunk of granite is the only one that manages to break free enough to rip the Patagonian sky. It’s like a giant rocky pyramid which rests on top of a white, glacial sheet and which over the years has transformed into a mountaineering icon.

Despite the aura of impenetrability it has long been known for, it has already been climbed on all sides. The town of El Chaltén

is located just a few hours away, one of the contributing factors in this mountain’s popularity. But this doesn’t mean one should be too confident. “It is a difficult mountain by any route, and even the easiest routes are only safely manageable by truly expert climbers,” Colin Haley points out, who after eight climbs up Fitz Roy is an authoritative voice when speaking about this colossus.

One of his greatest feats was to climb this mountain alone via the Supercanaleta route. “It was the hardest day of my entire life.

bablemente, una de las razones que ha incidido en su popularidad es que El Chaltén se encuentra a escasas horas de la base del cerro. Pero no por eso hay que confiarse. “Es una montaña difícil por cualquier vía e, incluso las rutas más fáciles sólo pueden ser manejadas con seguridad por escaladores verdaderamente expertos”, señala Colin Haley, quien tras ocho ascensiones al Fitz Roy, se ha transformado en voz autorizada para hablar de este coloso.

Una de sus mayores hazañas fue subir esta montaña en solitario por la Supercanaleta. “Fue el día más difícil de toda mi vida, ya que

was a lot of snow and this made the climb a lot slower.”

The large number of climbers on the most popular routes is also a difficulty to consider. “We had no idea that so many people would arrive on the same day as us. We got stuck behind a group of climbers and the ascent was really slow.

By the end, the four days we had planned for the expedition turned into five and we were almost out of food. That was the worst part,” the young climber said.

For many, Fitz Roy represents a true rock guardian, a guardian that protects the hidden treasures located behind its imposing figure. For Sebastián Rojas, that was precisely one of the greatest gifts from the climb. “The most dramatic moments were the sunrises overlooking the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. They were incredible, the kind of moments one never forgets in life.”

Colin says that the main problem at Mount Fitz Roy is the strong Patagonian winds. “Most of the time is spent waiting for breaks in the winds,” he says. “When the weather is finally calm, the biggest remaining difficulty is that the rock is often covered in snow and ice.”

Clearly, Patagonia is an unpredictable region. And Sebastián Rojas, who reached the summit via the Afanassief route in 2013, confirms just that. “We didn’t plan to climb during the storms, but on the first day we were caught in a real rage,” the Chilean mountaineer confessed, adding that “there were many cracks covered in ice.

Para el norteamericano, el principal problema con el Fitz Roy radica en los fuertes vientos y en que la mayor parte del tiempo es necesario esperar que estos amainen. “Cuando el clima finalmente está calmo, la gran dificultad que resta es que la roca muchas veces queda cubierta de nieve y hielo”, asegura Colin.

Claro que la Patagonia es una región impredecible. Así lo ratifica Sebastián Rojas, quien hizo cumbre por la ruta Afanassief en 2013. “No pretendíamos subir con tormenta, pero el primer día nos tocó una furia”, confiesa el montañista chileno, agregando que “habían muchas fisuras que estaban con hielo. Tuvimos que esperar un día para que se secara un poco porque estaba muy resbaloso y peligroso. Había mucha

nieve y la escalada se hizo más lenta”.

La gran cantidad de escaladores en las rutas más frecuentadas también es otra de las dificultades a considerar. “No teníamos contemplado que llegara tanta gente el mismo día que arribamos. Quedamos detrás de una cordada y el ascenso se fue haciendo cada vez más lento. Al final, de los cuatro días que teníamos previstos para la expedición, terminaron siendo cinco y casi nos quedamos sin comida. Eso fue lo más terrible”, afirma el joven escalador nacional.

Para muchos, el Fitz Roy representa un verdadero guardián pétreo. Un custodio que con su imponente figura protege el tesoro escondido a sus espaldas. Para Sebastián Rojas, este es quizá uno de los mejores regalos del ascenso. “Lo más impactante fueron los amaneceres mirando Campo de Hielo Sur. Eso fue increíble, de esos momentos que uno nunca se olvida en la vida”, declara el andinista. (Tomás Moggia)

Cerro Paine Grande N

o doubt, Torres del Paine is the principal attraction within the famed national park of the same name. Its incredible granite walls summon thousands of visitors who year after year come to see them up-close. However, the true ruler and lord of this land is Paine Grande.

It’s a mountain which contrasts enormously with its rocky and vertical neighbors, and which could perfectly enter into another category of mountain given its vastness.

With four summits perfectly aligned in a north-to-south axis, the huge protruding tower of its principal summit is the real gem of this mountain chain, which, with its icy tongues and erect walls, stands out like an impregnable fortress. But it’s not just this, as Paine Grande also seems to the heathen eyes extremely aloof.

Few are those who are blessed enough to admire it in all its splendor, as much of the time its tormentous, dominant climate enshrouds it within a greyish, cloudy veil.

Factors such as these help explain why its principal summit has been walked upon just three times so far (1957, 2000 and 2011).

There have been others who have not returned to tell the tale. “The most relevant aspects of this mountain include its significant incline of almost 3,000 meters and the different mountain techniques required, such as moving through deep snow or across glaciers and climbing up huge ice walls. Everything I mention requires a lot of preparation in Patagonian expeditions, as well as knowing how to read the climate and adapting to adverse

conditions,” highlights Sebastián Irarrázaval, who participated in the winter ascent of 2011.

For many, trying to reach the top of Paine Grande in winter is an act of madness. Still, this Chilean doctor and mountaineer explains that “despite the cold weather (with temperatures dropping various degrees below zero) and the shortness of the days, Patagonia has a more stable climate and less wind at this time of year, which means that the climb during the day to the summit is safer.”

All of that on a route which is approached from the southeast and where the greatest difficulties experienced are a huge quantity of snow in the lower area and plenty of ice in the higher zones. “The route chosen on the day we reached the summit was by the south face, a line of more than 500 meters at its most vertical edge. It was very direct and didn’t give us any respite as the vertical incline was a constant 60° to 90°, without rocky ledges or places to rest en route,” Sebastián recalls.

These are some of the reasons why this climber asserts that his expedition to Paine Grande “does not compare with any other, not even with the summit of Everest,” a peak which he climbed in 2012. As well, he emphasizes that “one must have lots of respect for Patagonia, which possesses an untamed and wild environment which attracts us, but at the same time, if we are not careful, it can really hurt us because we are insignificant in the face of the power of nature.”

o caben dudas. Las Torres del Paine son las principales atracciones del Parque Nacional que lleva su nombre. Sus impresionantes paredes de granito, convocan a miles de visitantes que año tras año llegan hasta allí con la intención de verlas de cerca. Sin embargo, el verdadero amo y señor de estos dominios es el Paine Grande. Un cerro que contrasta enormemente con sus rocosos y verticales vecinos, y que perfectamente podría entrar en otra categoría de montaña dada su inabarcable inmensidad.

Con cuatro cimas alineadas en un eje norte-sur, es el sobresaliente torreón de su cumbre principal la verdadera joya de este cordón montañoso, que con sus lenguas de hielo y erguidas paredes, asoma como una fortaleza inexpugnable. Pero no es sólo

eso, ya que el Paine Grande también resulta sumamente esquivo a los ojos paganos. Pocos son los bendecidos para admirarlo en todo su esplendor. Y es que el tormentoso clima imperante lo envuelve muchas veces con un grisáceo velo de nubes.

Son factores como estos los que han provocado que su cumbre principal haya sido pisada en apenas tres oportunidades (1957, 2000 y 2011). Otros, ni siquiera han regresado para contarla. “Los aspectos más relevantes de este cerro son el desnivel significativo de casi 3.000 metros y las distintas técnicas de montaña que se necesitan, como avance por nieve profunda o por glaciares y escalada en hielo de grandes paredes. Todo lo anterior requiere mucha preparación en expediciones patagónicas, además de

saber leer el clima y adaptarse a las condiciones adversas”, destaca Sebastián Irarrázaval, quien participó en la ascensión invernal de 2011.

Para muchos, intentar la cima del Paine Grande en invierno puede resultar una locura. No obstante, este médico y montañista chileno aclara que “a pesar del mayor frío (con temperaturas varios grados bajo cero) y los días más cortos, Patagonia cuenta con un clima más estable y con menos viento en esa época del año, lo cual permite que la escalada del día de la cumbre sea más segura”.

Todo en una ruta cuya aproximación se realizó por el suroeste y donde las mayores complejidades tuvieron que ver con la gran cantidad de nieve en la parte baja y bastante hielo en la zona alta.

“La vía elegida el día de cumbre

fue por la cara sur, una línea de más de 500 metros en su parte más vertical. Era muy directo y no daba tregua porque estaba constantemente entre los 60° y 90° de verticalidad, sin terrazas de roca o lugares para descansar en el camino”, recuerda Sebastián.

Son quizás algunos de los motivos por los cuales este escalador asegura que dicha expedición “no se compara con ningún otra, ni siquiera con la cumbre del Everest”, monte que subió en 2012. Por lo mismo, se encarga de enfatizar que “hay que tenerle mucho respeto a la Patagonia, que posee un ambiente indómito y salvaje que nos atrae, pero a su vez, si no nos cuidamos, nos puede hacer mucho daño porque somos insignificantes frente al poder de esta naturaleza”.

mong the Patagonian fjords, Mount Sarmiento abruptly arises from the turbulent, frigid waters surrounding the Cordillera Darwin in Tierra del Fuego. It is an awesome sight, but reserved only for the lucky few. And most of the time, its amazing pyramid shape, which glows white at the glacier summit, remains hidden behind the clouds.

"It’s one of the most beautiful mountains of the world with a lot of still unclimbed striking lines," says Ralf Gantzhorn, who in 2010 reached the west summit of Sarmiento. A mountain located in a remote and inhospitable region, its a true feat just to get to the base of Sarmiento making organizing logistics for reaching

the mountain one of the main challenges.

“The approximation with a small sailing boat is part of the whole adventure. It’s not really dangerous, but you never know how long it’s going to take. And there are so many things to see along the way: glaciers, the forest, seals, whales, and penguins,” says this German mountaineer and photographer, who emphasizes that this is a unique place unlike any other place on Earth.

The ascent alongside his friends Jörn Heller and Robert Jasper, involved some vertical to overhanging passages near the bergschrund, the rest was ice between 60° and 80°, including giant crevasses and ice

mushrooms. In short, a route rated WI 4 +, with about 3,000 vertical meters and a 40 km walk roundtrip from their camp at Caleta Escandallo.

They named their ascent route “La odisea de Magallanes,” which needed 39 hours to complete, including a bivouac of 6 hours in a snow cave due to bad weather.

"We quite often didn’t find the direct way because of giant crevasses. That means that we had a lot of dead ends where we had to return and find another way. In one word: una odisea!” recalls Gantzhorn, adding that “we had exactly 20 hours of fine weather, the rest was storm, snow and rain again.” Bad weather is perhaps one of the main rea-

sons Sarmiento has had so few ascents; around 30 expeditions have failed in their attempts to scale the mythical mountain. The German climber says mountains like this "are like divas, so nice to see but unpredictable in their behavior." In particular, he declares that this mountain "is a huge alpine peak with unbelievable bad weather. In comparison with Cerro Torre, the Chalten Area is like Copacabana."

Therefore, Gantzhorn recommends to be patient and enjoy the small things, but "If you get a chance with a reasonable weather window – hurry up!

That said, he cautions not to try this mountain in summer, that’s beyond dangerous.

Sarmiento is accessible only by boat, and with numerous failed attempts to scale its summit due in part to an overabundance of extremely bad weather.

or entre los fiordos patagónicos, el monte Sarmiento surge abruptamente de las turbulentas y gélidas aguas que rodean la Cordillera de Darwin, en Tierra del Fuego. Se trata de un espectáculo sobrecogedor, pero reservado solamente para algunos pocos afortunados. Y es que la mayor parte del tiempo, su asombrosa forma piramidal y su fulgurante y blanca cumbre glaciar, permanece oculta tras las nubes.

“Es una de las montañas más hermosas del mundo, con muchas rutas llamativas que todavía permanecen sin ser escaladas”, sostiene Ralf Gantzhorn, quien en 2010 ascendió a la cima oeste del Sarmiento. Un cerro que, al ubicarse en una alejada e inhóspita región, implica una verdadera hazaña tan solo para llegar a su base y donde algunas de las principales dificultades se encuentran en la logística para alcanzar la montaña.

“La aproximación con un pequeño velero es toda una aventura. No es tan peligroso, pero nunca se sabe cuánto te vas a demorar. En el camino hay muchas cosas para ver, como glaciares, bosques, lobos marinos, ballenas y pingüinos”, asegura este fotógrafo y montañista alemán, que pone énfasis en que se trata de un lugar único y que no es comparable a otros paisajes de la Tierra.

El ascenso junto a sus compañeros Robert Jasper y Jörn Heller, involucró pasajes verticales y sobresalientes cerca de la rimaya, hielo de mala calidad con pendientes entre 60° y 80°, además de gigantescas grietas y hongos de hielo. En definitiva,

una ruta graduada con WI 4+, con cerca de 3.000 metros de desnivel y 40 kilómetros de caminata desde el campamento en Caleta Escandallo.

Una vía que fue llamada “La odisea de Magallanes” y en la cual necesitaron 39 horas, incluyendo un vivac de seis horas en una cueva de nieve debido al mal tiempo. “Muy a menudo no encontramos una ruta directa debido a enormes grietas. Eso significó que nos metimos en un montón de callejones sin salidas, teniendo que devolvernos y buscar otro camino. En una palabra, fue una odisea”, recuerda Gantzhorn, agregando que “tuvimos exactamente 20 horas de buen tiempo, el resto fueron tormentas, nieve y lluvia”.

La inestabilidad climática es quizá uno de los principales factores que hace que el Sarmiento tenga tan pocos ascensos. Ya son cerca de 30 expediciones las que han fracasado en sus intentos. Y es que para el escalador germano, montes como este “son como divas, muy agradables de ver, pero impredecibles en su comportamiento”. En particular, aclara que esta montaña “es un enorme pico andino con un mal tiempo increíble, que en comparación con el cerro Torre, el área de El Chaltén es como Copacabana”.

Por lo mismo, Gantzhorn recomienda ser pacientes y disfrutar las pequeñas cosas, pero agregando que “si tienes una oportunidad con una ventana de buen tiempo razonable ¡apúrate!”. Sin embargo, confiesa que es mejor evitar los ascensos en verano, ya que en esa época es sumamente peligroso. (Tomás Moggia)

Ser el primero

On being first

O

ur battered tent, veteran of six expeditions, leaks like a torpedoed ship. Two big puddles formed on the floor overnight. I got to sleep in both of them. Clothes, book, sleeping bag, they’re all soaked. We poke holes in the floor to drain the water, tighten the guy lines, and pile rocks around the site. Happily, it isn’t raining anymore, and we scatter our kit among the boulders to dry in the wind. Racing clouds vex the dim sun and a furious wind rips a pair of untended pages from my moist pad of paper. A stream of snowmelt pours past our camp with a high-pitched rush while the gale’s bass moan thunders through the cols thousands of feet overhead, an aural menagerie blending together into a blind whoosh of white noise.

Glacier. To the west, a row of summits divides us from the southern Patagonian Icefield. We spy a rock tower that blends into the peak behind it from most viewpoints, but other angles show it to be a definite independent summit. It isn’t big, but it is beautiful, shaped like a whisky bottle 1,200 feet tall.

Best of all, it has been climbed.

The wind floods over the peaks, but by evening the cloud cover is intermittent and I have hope that dawn will bring us a climbing opportunity. Patagonia never guarantees good weather tomorrow, but I am strangely optimistic. Any cynical fool can be a pessimist, it takes no imagination, and no effort. So, optimistic, we decide to indulge in one of the craft’s sacred rites, a timehonored ritual that tunes our minds to the coming ascent— the gear sort.

uestra maltratada carpa, veterana de seis expediciones, gotea como un barco torpedeado.

Dos grandes charcos se formaron en el suelo durante la noche.

Tengo que dormir sobre ambos.

Ropa, libros, saco de dormir, todo está empapado. Hicimos hoyos en el piso para drenar el agua, apretamos los vientos, y amontonamos piedras alrededor del sitio. Felizmente ya no llueve y dispersamos nuestro equipo entre las rocas para secarlo al viento. Rápidas nubes afligieron al tenue sol y un viento furioso rasgó un par de páginas sueltas de mi húmeda libreta. Un río del deshielo traspasa nuestro campamento como una aguda punta, mientras que bajo este temporal los truenos gimen a través de los pasos cordilleranos a miles de pies de altitud, en una colección de sonidos como un zumbido ciego de ruidos blancos.

Un colosal cañón de agujas de granito con incrustaciones de hielo se encuentra a nuestro alrededor, una herradura de montañas penetra al sur del cielo alrededor de la cabeza del glaciar Marconi. Hacia el oeste, una hilera de cumbres nos separa del Campo de Hielo Sur. Espiamos una torre de roca que se funde con el pico detrás de la mayoría de los puntos de vista, pero otros ángulos demuestran que se trata definitivamente de una cima independiente. Jim pinches a piece of protection between his thumb and finger and holds it at arm’s length. He raises an eyebrow, peers at the piece like he’s regarding a chunk of road-kill, and asks, “Do we really need this?”

The correct answer is, of course, “No,” and with a theatrical twitch of his wrist, Donini flings the rejected piece into a growing pile of similarly scorned gear.

We leave the tent before dawn. The approach and the lower portion of the climb go well and we quickly climb the bulk of the tower, but by midafternoon a cold, hard wind is blowing. The full riot of the storm is not yet unleashed, but the dirty western horizon leaves no doubt—it’s coming. I complete a lead that reaches the tower’s shoulder and rig a belay at the low end of a down-sloping shelf. A 30foot pinnacle of rime-plastered rock rises from the high end of the ledge—the tower’s true

summit. The sky above is a scudding blur of battleship gray. Below, I watch wicked gusts wobble Jim’s body back and forth between his wedged hands and feet.

From my perch, I look straight across the valley behind the peak and into the throat of the Supercouloir splitting the northwest side of Fitz Roy. A cloud cap sticks to Fitz Roy’s summit like a boiling beret and I can actually see gusts blasting up the Supercouloir like a succession of shock waves. I look over at the ice-encrusted rock pinnacle beside me and see no obvious way to climb it, and I’m surprised to discover how very badly I want to stand on top of this insignificant little tower. I’ve never reached an unclimbed summit. I cuss and eye the pinnacle and the fury of the storm going over the top of Fitz. In warm conditions, with no ice, the pinnacle would be dead easy. Today, it looks like a popsicle, hard and dangerous, above a bone-snapping shelf.

Jim arrives and I tell him that I’m just going over to check the thing out – ever the reasonable man—but as I clamber over, I know damn well that I’m going full bore for

the top, greedy for the virgin summit of this obscure little peak. Exposed points of rock poke through the ice plastering and I climb 15 feet. I chop out a crack with an ice pick and place a camalot as high as I can reach.

I wedge the pick of my ice hammer into a thin crack on an icy shelf over to the left and pull up on the cam and the hammer until I can mantle onto the hammer’s pick. My left wrist is still stuck through the tool’s leash and I can’t stand up. I gingerly let go of the cam and strain over my head with my right hand. I latch a good hold.

Dangling, I shake the tool out from under my foot and traverse two icy moves left. The tool clanks and thunks against the crusted stone. I get my hands on the summit fin, fling a leg over to the far side, and hobby-horse along until I’ve got the highest point between my thighs. I plug a cam into a crack and belay Jim. The furious wind won’t let us stand on the summit in triumph. Instead, we cling to it like men clutching the flotsam of a sinking ship. Suddenly, we’re desperate. There is no sensation of being first.

As I clamber over, I know damn well that I’m going full bore for the top, greedy for the virgin summit of this obscure little peak.

Mientras subo otra vez, sé muy bien que a paso rápido voy en búsqueda de la cima, ávido por la cumbre virgen de este oscuro y pequeño pico.

bien, y rápidamente escalamos la mayor parte de la torre, pero al mediodía, un frío y fuerte viento comienza a soplar. La totalidad de la tormenta todavía no ha sido desatada, pero el sucio horizonte occidental no deja duda- está en camino. Desde mi posición, veo derechamente el valle detrás de la cima y hacia la garganta de la gran grieta divisora del lado noroeste del Fitz Roy. Una tapa de nubes se pega a la cumbre del Fitz Roy como una boina y puedo ver realmente las ráfagas que golpean a la enorme grieta como una sucesión de olas chocando.

Miro hacia el pico rocoso con incrustaciones

de hielo que está a mi lado y no veo ninguna vía obvia para poder subirlo, y me sorprende descubrir qué tanto quiero pararme arriba de esta insignificante y pequeña torre. Nunca he alcanzado una cumbre sin escalar. Maldigo a la cima y la furia de la tormenta que pasa por encima del Fitz. En condiciones cálidas, sin hielo, el pináculo estaría derretido fácilmente.

Hoy parece un palo de helado, duro y peligroso, como el sonido de un hueso al quebrarse.

Jim llega y le digo que sólo voy a seguir para revisar cómo está la situación –alguna vez soy un hombre razonable-, pero así como subo otra vez, sé muy bien que a paso rápido voy en búsqueda de la cima, ávido por la cumbre virgen de este oscuro y pequeño pico. Puntos expuestos de roca se asoman por entre el hielo mientras subo unos 15 pies. Corto una grieta con mi piolet y pongo un camalot tan alto como puedo alcanzar. Calzo el pico de mi martillo de hielo en una fina grieta sobre una plataforma de hielo ubicada a la izquierda y tiro hacia arriba la polea y el martillo hasta que puedo sacarlo del manto seleccionado. Mi muñeca izquierda sigue atascada en la correa de la

herramienta y no puedo ponerme en pie. Me dejo ir con el cuidado de la polea y la tensión pasa por encima de mi cabeza hacia mi mano derecha. Me aseguro con un buen agarre.

Colgando, agito la herramienta debajo de mi pie y atravieso con dos gélidos movimientos hacia la izquierda. El sonido metálico y sordo de la herramienta pega contra la corteza de la roca. Pongo mis manos sobre la aleta cumbrera, estiro mi pierna forzosamente por sobre la parte más alejada, y hago un alargado caballito hasta que tengo el punto más alto de la montaña entre mis muslos. Coloco el empotrador en una grieta y aseguro a Jim. El viento furioso no nos deja estar parados en la cumbre en señal de triunfo. En su lugar, nos aferramos a ella como hombres agarrándose a los restos de un barco que se hunde. De pronto nos desesperamos. No hay sensación como ser el primero.

rue legends of the old American West, in the mid-1890s, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid preyed upon trains, banks and mine payrolls throughout the Rocky Mountains states of the United States. Their loosely knit gang garnered nicknames in the newspapers like Hole-in -the-Wall-Gang, Robbers Roost Gang, or Wild Bunch. But as the 19th century came to a close, most of their outlaw colleagues had been arrested or killed, and Cassidy and Sundance opted to go abroad to escape lawmen, sailing for Argentina with Sundance’s presumed wife Ethel Place in early 1901.

In Argentina, the trio headed for Patagonia with new names to go with their new country. Butch Cassidy, whose real name was Robert LeRoy Parker, took the name James Ryan, and the Sundance Kid, the nickname of Harry Alonzo Longabaugh, called himself Harry A. Place. They homesteaded a ranch in the Cholila Valley in the Andean foothills of western Chubut, just north of a Welsh settlement that later blossomed into the city of Esquel. The outlaw threesome found

<historia> the landscape in Patagonia not unlike their stomping grounds in the Rockies. Initially they camped out in tents, but they were soon snug in a log cabin of cypress logs and alerce shingles, probably built by Chileans, who were the skilled woodsmen of the region. The structure did have a North American feature, double-hung windows. One visitor, Primo Capraro, an Italian architect living in Bariloche, later wrote that the interior "was simply furnished and exhibited a certain painstaking tidiness, a geometric arrangement of things, pictures with cane frames, wallpaper made from North American magazines, and many beautiful weapons and lassos braided from horsehair."

Cassidy and Sundance bought livestock from the nearby Leleque Estancia (now part of the Benetton company), and registered their brands in Rawson, the territorial capital. Settling in as ranchers, they raised cattle and sheep, traded with their neighbors, and petitioned for more land.

In 1902, Cassidy wrote to a friend in Utah about his new life: “this part of the country looks so good that I located, and I think for good.

For I like the place better every day. I have 300 cattle, 1500 sheep, and 28 good saddle horses, 2 men to do my work, also good 4 room house, wearhouse [sic] stable, chicken house, and some chickens.”

He said that his Spanish was not yet fluent “to converse in the latest scandals,” and that the Chilean government was building a new road over the Andes so that by the next summer they would be able to drive their cattle to Puerto Montt in four days, as opposed to two months on the old route.

Dr. Julio Lezana, the Chubut territorial governor stopped in Cholila while touring the region in early 1904. His group was feted with a party at the Wild Bunch trio’s home. The last inhabitant of the cabin, Aladín Sepúlveda, lived there from the 1920s until his death in 1999. His father began renting the property about a decade after Cassidy and Sundance departed.

land, another indication that they intended to settle permanently in Cholila. Regardless, they couldn’t stay out of trouble.

Cassidy was implicated in the robbery of a local merchant and briefly arrested. The Pinkerton National Detective Agency, which had been hunting the outlaw pair in the United States, learned they were in Cholila, and warned Argentina police “that it is only a question of time until these men commit some desperate robbery in the Argentine Republic,” and that if any bank or train robberies are reported, “you will find that they were undoubtedly committed by these men.” A bank robbery in Río Gallegos, Santa Cruz, in early 1905 by two Englishspeaking bandits prompted the police to issue an order for Cassidy and Sundance to be questioned. Even though the descriptions of the two bandits did not fit Cassidy and Sundance, the suspects had frequented the Cholila ranch, and it’s very possible they were all involved in the planning. Tipped off by a friendly policeman, Cassidy, Sundance, and Ethel fled north to Bariloche and took a steam launch across Lago Nahuel Huapi to Chile.

Writing from Valparaiso, Sundance told his neighbor Dan Gibbon, “I don’t want to see Cholila ever again, but I will think of you and all our friends often.”

Shortly thereafter, the trio returned briefly to Argentina. In December 1905, four bandits, two identified from photographs as Cassidy and Sundance, and one thought to be a woman, held up a bank in Villa Mercedes, San Luis, escaping with 12,000 pesos, the equivalent of $150,000 today. Ethel went back to the United States and disappeared, and Cassidy and Sundance moved up to Bolivia where they hired on at an American-owned tin mine. In a 1907 letter Cassidy, using the alias

Santiago Maxwell, told coworkers that he was hoping buy a ranch in Santa Cruz, in the Bolivian lowlands.

In late 1908, Cassidy and Sundance showed up in southern Bolivia, where they attacked a mine payroll outside of Tupiza. Alerted by a telegraph, a posse was formed to track down the two armed Yankees. When the dusty, tired bandits arrived in San Vicente, 14,500 feet in the Andes, in need of lodging and forage for their mules, a small military patrol was already there and a gun fight ensued. One soldier was killed, and further shots were exchanged. Screams from the bandits’ lodging were followed by silence. The next morning, they were found dead. Both wounded, one shot the other, then committed suicide, a newspaper reported.

Frank Aller, an American who had known Sundance in Antofagasta, Chile, requested information from the Bolivian government about him and a companion named Maxwell, both reportedly killed after a holdup.

Aller, a former American vice-consul who had once bailed Sundance out of trouble with the Chilean authorities, said that a local judge needed confirmation of Sundance’s death in order to settle his estate. The Bolivians confirmed the deaths, but said the two men were unidentified.

Cassidy and Sundance’s neighbors in Cholila later reported that letters from the pair had ceased and that they’d heard that they had died in Bolivia.

A Leader for Patagonia Un líder de la Patagonia

he Aysen region of Chilean Patagonia hosts a tresasure trove of glacier-capped mountains, aquamarine lakes, fast rivers and thick temperate forest. However, in recent years, its also been the epicenter of the country’s most intense environmental and social conflicts. There is the HidroAysen project, a large-scalde hydroelectric project proposed for the Baker and Pascua rivers in southern Aysen. Two years ago, Ayseninos protesting high prices and poor infrastructure in this long isolated region took to the streets, shutting down roads throughout the region for 40 days and prompting the government to send in the army to restore order.

A political independent, Chilean Senator Antonio Horvath has represented the Aysen region for more than two decades and is one of Chile’s and Patagonia’s staunchest environmental advocates in the Chilean Congress. He holds a masters degree in civil engineering and the environment from Purdue University in the United States. During much of the 1973-90 Augusto Pinochet military regime he was in charge of building the Carretera Austral, an ambitious project that carved a southern highway through predominantly virgin nature in an effort to improve Patagonia’s connections with the rest of Chile. The road has since become a tourist destination in itself for the magical scenery along the road.

Patagon Journal executive editor Jimmy Langman recently interviewed Sen. Horvath in Coyhaique about his master work, the Carretera Austral, and a range of other topics in Aysen. Excerpts: LANGMAN: How did you end up living in Patagonia?

HORVATH: My parents always had a close relationship with nature.

In our summers we would go camping. I began to notice that the city of Santiago was increasingly aggressive. I studied engineering and fine arts and did my thesis on engineering problems with ice, snow and frost. I always found that in road building there is a combination of art and engineering, I went to southern Chile for work and loved the place.

The stretch of the Carretera Austral from Coyhaique to Tortel is beautiful, but what happens if they build too much there?

Yes, its like a road in a park. We have talked more than once about giving it legal protection, which makes sense with a region like Patagonia.

The engineer has a mindset that when a road is bigger and straigher it is better. But that is fatal to an area that is fragile and that has so much natural and cultural value. It is an issue, and it has been gradually introduced into the technical specifications of the contracts and conscience of the people.

Unfortunately, scenic roads like Camino Ensenada outside of Puerto Varas are being flooded with tourism development.

That's not the model we want. This is not something where the bureaucrats decide everything -- the people have to participate in those decisions. They need to get agreements among fishermen, tourism businesses, conservationists and communities, among others, and make a land-use zoning plan that is based in law. Then, nobody can do something different afterwards, unless the group meets and zoning is made smaller. We are actually right now at the point of giving such zoning plans legal status, and this will mean that nobody can do whatever they want on the Carretera Austral, for example.

The positive side to roads like the Carretera Austral is they give access to remote, unknown places, but they also increase threats to natural areas.

A road is always just a tool. In the case of the Carretera Austral it has become an attraction in itself. Construction on the road began in 1976 , and in 1978 a group of us came together to start the publication Trapananda, so that more people and academics would appreciate what this would mean.

The roads were coordinated with Conaf (Chile’s park service) so they could make interpretive trails. We have a lot of parks in Chile, but on paper. Conaf is an institution that puts a lot of pride into what it does, but it does not have enough power nor resources. An example is Bernardo O'Higgins Park, an enormous park that has just one park ranger. That is not caring for, nor appreciating nor producing all the potential services that parks can give.

So, a key issue then is enacting new land-use policies in Chile.

The previous government tried to put in a new land-use zoning system, and today it is in question because it let's mega projects be part of the system. We are obviously against that because they are fatal. Hidroaysen is the spearhead for at least 10 more dam projects. The Aysen river, Cisnes, Figueroa, Palena, Futaleufu, a network of large mega projects that, if Hidroaysen were to go forward some day, would cause a domino effect. Each has its own transmission line. They can not go on the same towers, which means Patagonia would be transformed into an electric guitar even though we know that there are alternative solutions with energy distributed closer to the production and consumers. We don’t need the big companies deciding our energy policies. This is a system that needs to deep changes to allow renewable energies to flourish.

You are pushing for re-nationalizing water in Chile, how would that work?

There are several constitutional amendments that we have proposed.

I presented a reform that includes integrated watershed management.

An example is the Futaleufu River, we want conservation and tourism and that everything is compatible with that. This is a nationalization of water with a procedure. In other words, if someone has water rights

Nadie puede hacer algo distinto después, a menos que se logre reunir el grupo y se haga una zonificación pero más pequeña. Estamos justos en una etapa de darle un rango legal, y eso permite que no cualquiera haga lo que quiera en torno a la Carretera Austral, por ejemplo.

El lado positivo de caminos como la Carretera Austral se les da acceso a lugares desconocidos, remotas, pero también aumentan las amenazas a las áreas naturales.

Un camino siempre es una herramienta. En el caso de la ruta Austral y los transversales se han convertido en un atractivo en sí mismo. El camino parte en 1976 y para 1978 hicimos un grupo de trabajo y sacamos la publicación Trapananda, para que distintos estudios y personas valoraran lo que eso significaba. Los caminos se traspasaron a Conaf para que hicieran sus senderos interpretativos.

Nosotros tenemos mucho parque en Chile pero en el papel, Conaf es una institución que le pone mucho amor propio a lo que hace, pero no tiene suficiente poder ni los medios. Un ejemplo es el Parque Bernardo O´Higgins, que tiene solo un guarda parques. Eso no se cuida, ni se valora ni produce todo el potencial de servicios que puede dar.

Así que una cuestión clave, entonces, es la promulgación de nuevas políticas de ordenamiento territorial.

En la administración pasada, trataron de meter un nuevo ordenamiento, distinto y que hoy está en tela de juicio porque deja que los mega proyectos sean parte del sistema. De eso obviamente estamos en contra porque son fatales. Hidroaysen es un punta de lanza para 10 proyectos más. El río Aysén, en Cisnes, Figueroa, Palena, Futaleufú, es una red de grandes mega proyectos que, de aprobarse Hidroaysen, generarían un efecto dominó. Cada uno tiene su línea de transmisión.

No pueden ir en la misma torre, significa transformar la Patagonia en una guitarra eléctrica y, además, sabemos que existen soluciones alternativas con energías distribuidas cerca de la producción del lugar de consumo. Además no requiere que las grandes empresas hagan las políticas de energía. Es un sistema que hay que cambiarlo profundamente para que las energías renovables tengan más cabida.

Está empujando para la re-nacionalización del agua en Chile, ¿cómo va eso?

Hay varias reformas constitucionales que hemos planteado. La reforma que yo presenté incluye el manejo integrado de las cuencas.

you can’t go and take them away, but you can say, look, your water rights here are impossible to exercise because it is an area that is protected for tourism or we do not want a dam.

What about creating a special form of protection for rivers with high conservation and tourism value, something akin to the Wild and Scenic Rivers system in the U.S.?

With Robert Kennedy, who comes to Chile a lot to visit the Futaleufu, and his Riverkeepers organization we are looking at putting several rivers of Patagonia under that type of legal protection in Chile. The issue is having a strong legal basis because, for example, the previous Bachelet government tried by administrative decree to declare some rivers as having “protection interest,” but then the Pinera government reversed this decree. So, this is something that must have a continuity over time.

What happened to the Aysen social movement?

I believe they achieved 20 to 25 percent of their 11 original demanfs. I have known this movement since its birth and there was a good chance to resolve historic debts between Chile and Aysen. Those debts generated a spark that exploded, and the past regional government was too authoritarian. Instead of sitting at the table, talking and dialoguing to achieve solutions they sent the special forces to crush the rebellion. That exacerbated the mood. But behind all this there were 11 demands that were completely solvable. The results, despite past government propaganda, are not so visible. But the region showed that it is capable of uniting and sacrificing for important issues.

Yo were a member of former President Piñera’s center-rtight poltiical party, what happened?

In the 2010 presidential election there were two alternatives: Piñera and Frei Ruiz-Tagle. Piñera had showed an openness to environmental issues but a few months after taking offie he turned his back to the environmental movement. I then became an opponent as he failed to meet the commitments he promised in his campaign. Before the party kicked me out I resigned.

Con Robert Kennedy, que viene seguido acá a Futaleufú sobre todo, y la organización Riverkeepers se está intentando que varios ríos de la Patagonia entren bajo esa organizacion con base legal en Chile.

El tema es que tengan una base legal fuerte porque, por ejemplo, en la anterior administración de Bachelet se definieron algunos ríos de interés de protección, pero la administración anterior lo derogó, entonces tienen que tener una continuidad en el tiempo. ¿Qué ha pasado con el movimiento social de Aysén?

Creo que se ha logrado un 20 o 25% de las 11 peticiones originales.

Conozco ese movimiento desde que nació y hubo una buena oportunidad de unir las deudas históricas. Ese conjunto de deudas generó una chispa que los activó, y en el gobierno pasado la autoridad regional era excesivamente autoritaria y en vez de sentarse en una mesa, conversar y lograr soluciones trajo fuerzas especiales para aplastar la rebeldía. Eso exacerbó los ánimos. Tras esto hubo 11 peticiones que eran totalmente posibles de resolver. Los resultados pese a la propaganda del gobierno pasado no están tan a la vista. La región demostró que es capaz de unirse y sacrificarse por temas importantes.

El ex presidente Piñera era un miembro de su partido político anterior, ¿qué pasó?

En ese minuto había dos alternativas: Piñera o Frei Ruiz-Tagle.

Piñera en ese minuto mostró una apertura a los temas ambientales y a los pocos meses él le dio la espalda a estos movimientos. Yo pasé al área adversaria y no cumplió con los compromisos que prometió en su campaña. Antes de que me echaran renuncié.

What kind of development model you want in Patagonia?

It is a special place in the world and deserves a special status.

We are now trying to get Patagonia declared a part of the patrimony of humanity with official recognitin by the United Nations as a World Heritage area. Such a place requires a decentralized system with a land-use zoning plan. We've done the math and in the economic sphere its worth far more to protect Patagonia than all of the mega projects combined. That is the path we all must push toward – to properly value what we have ecologically and culturally.

¿Qué tipo de modelo de desarrollo quieres para la Patagonia?

Es un lugar especial en el mundo y por ello que merece un estatuto especial. Ahora estamos tratando de que la Patagonia sea Patrimonio de la Humanidad y sea reconocida internacionalmente. Para ello requiere un sistema descentralizado con un ordenamiento territorial.

Hemos hecho el ejercicio y en el ámbito económico suma más que todos los mega proyectos. Ese es el camino que tenemos que empujar entre varios, poner en valor lo que ecológicamente y cultural somos.

The lifestyle in Patagonia is different.

It is, and it has a deep philosophy. Here the distances are measured in hours and the old saying in Patagonia "he who hurries wastes his time" is not a sign of laziness rather a synonym that things here have their own rhythm.

El estilo de vida en la Patagonia es diferente.

Claro y tiene una profunda filosofía. Acá las distancias se miden en horas y el dicho de la Patagonia que dice “el que se apura pierde su tiempo”, no es un signo de flojera sino un sinónimo de que las cosas tienen un ritmo propio.

That lifestyle is in danger?

Always. The centralized system is not just in Chile but throughout the world, and there are social protests well aware that the planet can not not stand much more abuse. We can not continue on this path.

¿Está en peligro este estilo de vida?

Siempre. El sistema centralizador no es solo de Chile sino de todo el mundo, la protesta social está en conciencia de que el planeta no resiste más. No podemos seguir en este camino.

any of her photos of Patagonia’s land, water, and sky almost seem like one is viewing the region through an unconscious dreamscape.

Perhaps that is because Celine Frers says some of her fondest childhood memories are revived during her journeys through Patagonia. She observes that, similar to Corrientes province in northeast Argentina, where she spent much of her youth, Patagonia is dominated by wild nature, vast and solitary landscapes, and the noble, brave and rustic spirit of its people.

Beyond her love of wildness in Patagonia, Celine seeks to portray in her photos the relationship of the landscape with its people. In particular, the gaucho culture that is slowing fading away and increasingly further afield.

Some of the photos herein this essay are from two of her extraordinary photography books: Cielos Patagonicos and Tierra de Gauchos. Her work on those books included, among other places, intense tours of Estancia El Condor near Lake San Martin, or riding horseback at Estancia Menelik with the imposing Cerro San Lorenzo in the backdrop, or exploring around Mount Fitz Roy while coping with smack-down winds.

She moved about on horseback for weeks at a time, going deeper into the region, sleeping in tents or small huts, sometimes below the stars. And sometimes, Celine says, walking for numerous days “just to feel and portray the true strength of Patagonia, its real magic. The part of Patagonia that is most hidden and wild.”

uchas de sus fotografías de las tierras, el agua y el cielo de la Patagonia casi parecen como si uno estuviera viendo la región a través de un paisaje de ensueño inconsciente. Quizás sea porque Celine Frers dice que algunos de sus mejores recuerdos de infancia son revividos durante sus viajes por la Patagonia. Observa que, de forma similar a la provincia de Corrientes, en el noreste de Argentina, donde pasó gran parte de su juventud, la Patagonia es dominada por la naturaleza salvaje, vastos y solitarios paisajes, y el espíritu noble, valiente y rústico de su gente.

Más allá de su amor por el salvajismo de la Patagonia, Celine busca retratar en sus fotos la relación del paisaje con su gente. En particular, la cultura gaucha que está lentamente desapareciendo y cada vez es más distante.

Algunas de las fotos de este ensayo pertenecen a dos de sus extraordinarios libros de fotografía: Cielos Patagónicos y Tierra de Gauchos. Su trabajo para aquellas publicaciones incluyó, entre otros lugares, intensas giras por Estancia El Cóndor, cerca del Lago San Martín, cabalgatas en la Estancia Menelik, con el imponente Cerro San Lorenzo en el fondo, y la exploración en torno al cerro Fitz Roy mientras enfrentaba vientos poderosos.

Ella se movía a caballo durante semanas, metiendo tierra adentro, durmiendo en carpa o pequeños puestos, a veces bajo las estrellas. En algunas ocasiones, Celine dice que caminaba por numerosos días "para sentir y retratar la verdadera fuerza de la Patagonia, su verdadera magia. La parte de la Patagonia más oculta y salvaje".

24 hours at the “end of the world” 24 horas en el “fin del mundo”

eturning to Tierra del Fuego after four years was wonderful.Good friends were there to receive me in Ushuaia, a city that has visibly grown. Due to new incentives from the Argentine government, several factories have been installed on the outskirts, resulting in new urban problems like transport congestion and contamination for which the city was ill-prepared.

A longtime tourism destination, Ushuaia ow lives with the dilemma of how to deal with future growth. Before it was completely isolated, now it’s part of the mundane progress of a hyper-connected 21st century.

Across the Beagle Channel from the city is the Chilean shoreline, and its antithesis. For native “Fueginos” who have sailed the Beagle, Chile’s Navarino Island is but a daydream of virgin nature which day by day is fading away in Ushuaia. That is slightly an exaggeraiton, nature still abounds here, but the population is growing out of control and fast.

It had been a longheld wish of mine to cross the Beagle to Puerto Williams and Navarino Island. My friends, in between sharing a mate tea, put me in touch with the team at Ushuaia Boating who agreed to help make it happen.

olver a Tierra del Fuego luego de cuatro años resultó una maravilla. Ushuaia me recibía con amigos entrañables y, también, con una ciudad que evidentemente se agrandó más. Debido a nuevos incentivos del gobierno argentino, una serie de fábricas se instalaron en los confines trasandinos aumentando, con ello, varios problemas urbanos como congestiones automotrices y contaminación para la que no estaba preparada.

Esta mini-polis con tradición turística, actualmente vive la disyuntiva de cómo determinar su crecimiento a futuro. Antes completamente aislada, ahora es parte de este devenir mundano de un siglo XXI hiperconectado.

La ribera chilena que enfrenta a la ciudad, es también su antítesis.

Para todo fueguino que ha surcado el Beagle, la isla Navarino es una ensoñación de una naturaleza virgen que en Ushuaia pareciera cada vez más lejana. Claro, es una exageración. Naturaleza hay de sobra, pero el poblamiento crece en desorden y a un ritmo aplastante.

Mis amigos, mates mediante, fueron quienes ayudaron a que pudiera cruzar a Puerto Williams. Deseo largamente anhelado: cruzar

The drive to Puerto Williams, the southernmost settlement in the world, is an hour and a half of potent nature.

La ruta a Puerto Williams, el poblado más austral del mundo, demora una hora en medio de una naturaleza poderosa. el Beagle. Me contactaron con la gente de Ushuaia Boating y me invitaron a navegar hacia la isla chilena.

La distancia entre Ushuaia y Puerto Navarino, pequeño villorrio regentado por gente de la armada y pescadores de centollas, es cortísima. Son 25 minutos de navegación que poca gente realiza por restricciones navales de ambos países –herencia del fallido conflicto de 1978- y el alto costo. Suerte la mía.

The distance between Ushuaia and Puerto Navarino, a small fishing village dominated by the navy and crab fisherman, is incredibly short.

It’s just a 25-minute boat ride which few people make due to naval restrictions imposed by both countries — a costly part of the legacy of a near military conflict between the two countries in 1978. Lucky me.

Toward Navarino The day begins foggy and with winds coming in from the west. There’s a possibility that the crossing isn’t viable due to the strong tides. It’s October, a month when the wind currents are stronger in Patagonia and, even though the Beagle Channel is short, the sea riles up when the wind blows along the geographical narrow stretch of the islands here.

Pablo Smith, owner of Ushuaia Boating, calms my worries: there’ll be a trip. Eventually, I get on a zodiac boat completely covered and with windows. I’m the only passenger.

From the port we depart from the scenery is spectacular, owing to an untimely snowfall a few days before. The entire Tierra del Fuego mountain range was blanketed in white and the views of the city were just amazing.

The wind blew hard and the waves dispersed along the entire channel,

El día amanece nublado y ventando desde el oeste. Hay posibilidades de que el cruce no resulte por el fuerte oleaje. Es octubre, mes en que las corrientes eólicas son más fuertes en Patagonia y, aunque el canal de Beagle sea corto, el mar se encabrita cuando sopla el viento por la estrechez geográfica de ambas islas.

Pablo Smith, operador de Ushuaia Boating, me da un mate y tranquiliza las preocupaciones: habrá viaje. Luego de la migración en el puerto, me subo a un zodiac completamente techado y con ventanas.

Soy el único pasajero.

La panorámica desde la salida es espectacular, debido a unas intempestivas nevadas ocurridas en los días anteriores. Toda la cordillera fueguina lucía sendos mantos blancos y la visibilidad de la ciudad era estupenda. El viento soplaba fuerte y las olas se esparcían por todo el canal con un bamboleo continuo en la proa. Las ondas marinas que se agigantan eran capeadas con maestría por “Ale”, Alejandro Greco, el piloto. Luego de media hora, entramos a una zona menos tumultuosa entre los primeros islotes que anteceden a la Navarino y al puerto homónimo.

Viejos Conocidos La primera vez que viajé -vía aérea- a Williams fue el 2008, escribiendo reportajes para un portal de internet. Desde entonces pensaba que volvería a este poderoso lugar.

Una serie de hombres esperaba la llegada del zodiac para cruzar a Ushuaia. Al saludarlos uno de ellos me reconoce tras ¡5 años! Era el dueño de Turismo Shila, un operador local que lleva gente a uno de los más emblemáticos trekkings en la zona: Los Dientes de Navarino.

No es de extrañar el que recuerden a los foráneos. La isla tiene poco más de 1600 habitantes y Puerto Navarino sólo una decena. La ruta a Puerto Williams, el poblado más austral del mundo, demora una hora en medio de una naturaleza poderosa: bosques de ñires y lengas, bahías solitarias y el cementerio indígena donde yacen los restos de la mayor parte de los Yaganes, el pueblo originario de canoeros dueños de estas latitudes y que fueron diezmados por la incursión del “hombre blanco”.

Aunque la villa de Puerto Williams es pequeña, posee una buena infraestructura hotelera. Por segunda vez llego al Hotel Lakutaia, el

continually rolling against the bow. The increasingly bigger waves as we advanced were skillfully ridden out by “Ale,” Alejandro Greco, the boat driver. After half an hour, we entered a less tumultuous zone between the first islets which precede the port at Navarino.

Old friends The first time that I traveled to Puerto Williams was by plane, in 2008, writing reports for a internet news website. Since that trip, I always felt that I would return some day.

Several men were waiting for the zodiac to arrive so as to make the reverse crossing to Ushuaia. Upon greeting them, one of them recognized me after five years! He was the owner of Turismo Shila, a local tour operator which specializes in treks to Los Dientes de Navarino, the island’s emblematic hiking destination.

It’s not surprising that people here remember outsiders. The island altogether has just 1600 inhabitants and Puerto Navarino only about a dozen. The drive to Puerto Williams, the southernmost settlement in the world, is an hour and a half of potent nature: ñire and lenga forests, solitary bays and the indigenous cemeteries where most of the remains of the Yaganes people lie — the original canoeing population and masters of these latitudes who were decimated by the arrival of the “white man.”

24 Horas: día 1 En Lakutaia prestan bicicletas de montaña para los huéspedes. Una de las mejores formas de viajar y conocer. Los pocos kilómetros que separan el hotel del poblado pasan entre hermosas vistas de los “Dientes”, una seguidilla de colmillos rocosos siempre nevados que se alzan al sur, y el Club de Yates, con veleros de navegantes internacionales que, por lo general, enfilan al Cabo de Hornos.

Puerto Williams, fundada en 1952, es una mezcla de dos barrios: el de la Armada, pulcro y con casas blancas, y el de los habitantes civiles, colorido, menos ordenado pero más vital. Destaca, es su atomizado centro, la proa del “Yelcho”, escampavía que dirigió el piloto Luis Pardo y que es parte de una de las epopeyas más grandes en la historia moderna: el rescate de la tripulación del “Endurance” y del legendario Ernest Shackleton, cuando quedaron atrapados por los hielos en la península antártica.

También hay que ver el museo “Martín Gusinde” gran sitio para comprender la historia y formación antropológica del archipiélago del Cabo de Hornos. Grandes salas con muestras de la cultura yagan, principalmente, relatando su cosmovisión que fue denostada cuando Darwin, es su viaje por la región, los subestimara como seres humanos.

Más tarde la bicicleta va hacia Villa Ukika, a dos kilómetros al oriente. Pocas casas son el refugio del legado yagán. Acá vive Cristina Calderón, de 86 años, la última sobreviviente originaria, acompañadas

Even though the village of Puerto Williams is small, it possesses good hotel infrastructure. For the second time I stayed at Lakutaia Lodge, with its spacious rooms immersed in a beautiful old house overlooking the Beagle. At dinner time, the chef, Marcia Villarroel, appears. We instantly recognize each other, we smile and once again I experience the warmth of this special town at the end of the planet.

24 Hours: Day 1 The hotel loans mountain bikes to the guests, and its a fantastic way to get around and see the sights. A few miles from the town, the route from the hotel passes beautiful views of “Los Dientes,” a string of rocky fangs seeminingly always covered in snow, and the local yacht club, where international sailing boats frequently line up at Cape Horn.

Puerto Williams, founded in 1952, is a blend of two neighborhoods: that of the navy, which is meticulous and filled with white houses, and that of the rest of the towns citizens which is colorful, and less-organized, but more alive. Highlights in the town center include the bow of the “Yelcho,” the cutter boat navigated by pilot Luis Pardo which formed part of one of the largest epic accomplishments in modern history: the rescue of the “Endurance” crew and the legendary Ernest Shackleton when they were trapped in the ice along the Antarctic peninsula.

One should also visit the Martín Gusinde Museum, a great place to learn about the history of the Cape Horn archipelago. The museum has huge halls with displays of the Yagan culture, principally presenting this culture’s worldview that was reviled when the naturalist Charles Darwin, during his travels through the region, denoted them as lesser human beings.

Later on I ride the bike to Villa Ukika, just two kilometers to the east, and where a few houses keep the Yagan culture alive. Among

Pedaleo por 20 kilómetros en el camino que enfila frente a la isla de los Estados y la trasandina localidad de Puerto Almanza. No hay objetivo más que la exploración. En la ruta se encuentran muchas cosas raras, por ejemplo, un antiguo galpón de elaboración de carne de centolla que está abandonado al punto que pareciera que la guerra civil hubiese atestado un golpe allí. Encandila esta devastación en medio de bosques prístinos. En la costa, un silente faro es testigo de los cambios de mareas y de la azulada cordillera que se despliega por Tierra del Fuego y que se convierte en un farellón que separa sus altas cumbres y frondosas laderas de las yermas pampas más norteñas de esa gran isla.

the residents here is the last native survivor of the Yagan, Cristina Calderón, 86 years-old.

I pedal on for another 20 kilometers along the path which heads toward the Isla de los Estados and Puerto Almanza. I am here to explore, nothing more. Along the way, I stumble upon a strange site, an oldfashioned crabmeat storehouse that has been so terribly abandoned that it looks as though it has been ravaged by war. And this devastation is smack in the middle of pristine forests. On the coast, I reach a lighthouse that is silent witness to the changing tides and the bluish mountains which unfold throughout Tierra del Fuego.

Amanece, grandioso desayuno del hotel y me encamino hacia el cerro Bandera, un trekking nacido como parte del Sendero de Chile y que se puede realizar de manera autoguiada. En poco menos de dos horas se transita la primera parte de un trayecto más amplio, de a 4 a 5 días de duración, y que ya mencionamos: Los Dientes.

Tenía 4 horas antes de irme, tiempo suficiente. En bicicleta llegué al inicio de la ruta: un enorme bosque de ñires, de unos 500 años de antigüedad, daba la recepción a un paseo que mezcla un constante ascenso, sonidos de pájaros carpinteros y espectaculares vistas de altura sobre todo el canal de Beagle.

Con nieve en la última parte de la subida y tras pasar un añoso campo de lengas, se sobrepasa la línea de los bosques y comienza propiamente la montaña.

La vista mejora impresionantemente al aparecer la rocosa dentadura navarina, esas puntudas cúspides en hilera que corta el horizonte.

Desde acá se aprecia la bandera chilena que flamea por el poderoso viento imperante sobre los 600 metros de altura. Se puede caminar por los planchones de nieve y observar los cerros colindantes así como también lagunas congeladas. El descenso es rápido. Es hora de volver a Ushuaia.

El resto del trekking; Puerto Toro, el verdadero poblado más austral del mundo; el parque etnobotánico Omora y alguna navegación por la desmembrada geografía austral, quedarán para el próximo viaje. La isla Navarino es un territorio para explorar, conocer, conversar y estar para mucho más que un día, pero ante la oportunidad de realizarlo no había cómo dudar.

24 hours: Day 2 The day begins with a wonderful hotel breakfast and then I’m on my way to Bandera Hil, a trek which begins as part of the nationwide Sendero de Chile Trail and which can be enjoyed without a professional guide.

In a little under two hours, walking the first part of a larger trekking circuit of four or five days in length, you arrive at the aforementioned Los Dientes.

I had four hours to do the hike, more than enough time. I arrived to the start of the trail by bicycle, then an enormous forest of ñire trees, some 500 years-old, gave pass to a path which combined a constant climb, woodpecker bird calls and spectacular high views across the entire Beagle Channel. With snow along the final stretch of this ascent, after passing an old field of lenga trees the forest line is surpassed and the mountainous countryside truly begins.

The view improves incredibly as the Los Dientes de Navarino’s rocky geology appears - a sharp row of peaks which cut across the horizon. From here the Chilean flag can be fully appreciated, which flutters thanks to the powerful, prevailing wind. It’s possible to walk along the slabs of snow and observe both the adjoining hills and the frozen lakes. Later, the descent is fast. It’s time to return to Ushuaia.

With my 24 hour journey nearing its conclusion, Puerto Toro, the true southernmost settlement in the world, Omora Ethnobotanical Park, and a boat trip along the dismembered southern geography, will all have to wait until the next trip. Clearly, Navarino Island is worth exploring much more than one day, but when I was given this chance to travel there, there was absolutely no way I could refuse.

I

t’s the journey not the destination which matters most, and that is so true in this case. Driving south from the Aysen region’s capital Coyhaique is simply spectacular along the Carretera Austral, the largely dirt highway that winds it way through northern Chilean Patagonia. This autumn day the stretch of the incredibly scenic route I am traveling on includes Lago General Carrera, South America’s second-largest lake, a brilliant blue gem awash in pristine beauty.

Still, I am happy to find that my destination, Bahia Catalina Cabañas, located at KM 265 on the southern end of Lago General Carrera, is also a gem. Here, it is much more than comfortable lodging, there is that welcoming Patagonian spirit. After unpacking the backpacks, soon enough my fellow travellers and I are engaging in the time-honored Patagonian practice of sharing a mate tea in front of the crackling warm fireplace in the main cabin hosting the common kitchen and dining area.

When I wake up the next day I am further impressed. Featuring a lakeside campground and rustic cabins that host up to 10 persons altogether, the focus here is not about impressing you with luxurious amenities but giving you close access to luxurious nature amid a friendly, private and laid-back setting. Situated between two lakes, rolling hills, and alpine peaks in the distance, the sprawling property is dotted with diverse trees and the abundant, bright red mosquesta bushes make it almost seem like right out of a watercolor painting.

It is a good place to hang out, go kayak or fly fishing, demolish a Patagonian asado by the lake, or hike and admire, but even moreso Bahia Catalina is a great base for enjoying some of the best Aysen has to offer. It’s centrally located: drive about one hour or so in either direction and you can be at the Baker River going fly fishing, touring the Marmol caves, trekking in Valle Exploradores or rising up a mountain peak in Chile Chico. In that regard, Bahia Catalina can also custom design your travel agenda, including providing transportation and guides for the excursions.

One of the oldest lodgings in the zone, opening for business in 1989, Bahia Catalina is owned and operated by Miriam Chible (who also owns Historico Ricer restaurant in Coyhaique) and her eldest daughter, Marcela Rios. That is another plus, as the Chible family are passionately dedicated to a vision of conserving the rich Patagonia nature and culture found in Chile’s Aysen region and that ethic is witnessed in situ through the gentle care they give to both their business and the people who are fortunate to visit.

s el viaje y no el destino lo que más importa, y eso es tan cierto en este caso. Conducir al sur de Coyhaique, la capital de la región de Aysén, a lo largo de la Carretera Austral, es simplemente espectacular.

Este día de otoño, el trecho de la pintoresca ruta por la que estoy viajando incluye el Lago General Carrera, el segundo lago más grande de América del Sur, una gema azul brillante inundada de belleza prístina.

Aún así, estoy contento de encontrar que mi destino, Bahía Catalina Cabañas, ubicada en el kilómetro 265 en el extremo sur del Lago General Carrera, es también una joya. Aquí, es mucho más que un alojamiento confortable, es la bienvenida al acogedor espíritu de la Patagonia. Después de desempacar las mochilas, muy pronto mis compañeros de viaje y yo estamos participando en una práctica patagónica de larga tradición al compartir un mate en frente de la cálida chimenea crepitante en la principal sala común: la cocina y zona de comedor.

Cuando me despierto al día siguiente me impresiono aún más. Con un camping junto al lago y cabañas rústicas que albergan hasta 10 personas en total, el foco no trata de impresionarte con instalaciones de lujo, sino que da el acceso cercano a una naturaleza de lujo.

Situado entre dos lagos, colinas y cumbres andinas a la distancia, la extensa propiedad está salpicada de diversos árboles y los abundantes arbustos de mosquesta brillantemente rojos casi parecen como salidos de una acuarela.

Es un buen lugar para pasar el rato, andar en kayak, pescar, o ir de excursión y admirar, pero más aún Bahía Catalina es una base ideal para disfrutar de algunos de los mejores lugares que Aysén tiene para ofrecer. Centralmente ubicada: cerca de una hora de manejo en cualquier dirección, se puede estar en el río Baker e ir de pesca con mosca, recorriendo las cuevas Mármol, hacer trekking en el Valle Exploradores o subir a una cumbre montañera en Chile Chico. En ese sentido, Bahía Catalina también puede personalizar el diseño de tu agenda viajera, incluida la prestación de transporte y guías para las excursiones.

he rustic decor – a subtle mixture of indigenous weaving, noble materials and dim lighting – combines with the mystical music, and takes us back to a distant time. We sense that this is a special place.

Upon reading the restaurant menu, it is clear this place is a gem.

Little known ingredients with daring blends abound. The Argentine chef Juan Manuel Pena shows off his research and creativity in his cuisine, which harkens back to ancient flavors. Peumayén, which opened in early 2013 in Santiago’s Bellavista neighborhood, explores Chile’s indigenous culinary roots: the Mapuche in the south, the Aymara in the north, and the distant Rapa Nui of Easter Island.

A pisco sour made with rica-rica herbs awkens our palate with a distinct sweetness to this traditional Chilean drink that is blended to perfection. The drinks and wine menu, like the food menu, is not very long with some of the dishes written in their native language, the waiter tell us. We choose the appetizer sampler, each dish boasting tempting, exotic ingredients.

I soon understood why I had read such high praise regarding Peumayén’s "blessed bread basket.” The basket includes creative dishes like the “masitas” (sautéed meat) inspired by Chilean indigenous culture. It's a delight, from the sugary Easter Island cupcakes to the “chilote milcao” (meat-filled potato patties), all deliciously cooked.

I won’t go into too many details because part of the Peumayén experience involves surprising oneself in situ, but from then onward everything was a total delight. The innovative fusions and bold flavors that used algae, exotic mushrooms, horse and llama meat, and other ingredients that I had never even heard of, were outstanding. Few places have such high-quality options that are so exquisitely prepared!

The products are natural and the meats come from "happy" animals, raised and then slaughtered in a non-industrial setting. The service and attention at the restaurant was outstanding: there were many foreigners at the restaurant and the waiters spoke perfect English and French. The waiters are always willing to explain the dishes and tell the story of the place to any inquisitive diner.

The dessert also surprised us: a caramelized banana covered in honey, passion fruit jelly and popcorn, accompanied by chopped lemon ice. It was incredibly delicious.

There are some who argue that the prices are a little high. For me, the rarity of the ingredients, the culinary research and unique experience make Peumayén, which means a "place of dreams" in the Mapuche language, well worth a few extra pesos.

a decoración rústica -sutil mixtura de telares de pueblos originarios, materiales nobles y una iluminación tenue- se une a la música mística que nos remonta a un tiempo lejano. Percibimos que este lugar es especial.

Al leer la carta del restaurante nos queda aún más claro. Abundan ingredientes poco conocidos y mezclas osadas. No son pretensiones de cocina de autor, su chef, el argentino Juan Manuel Pena, luce un trabajo de investigación y creatividad que logra remontarnos a sabores ancestrales. Peumayén, inaugurado el 2013 en el barrio Bellavista de Santiago, viaja hacia las raíces gastronómicas de Chile: mapuches en el sur, aymaras en el norte o los lejanos rapanui.

Un pisco sour de rica rica despierta nuestro paladar. Dicha hierba agrega un dulzor diferente a esta típica bebida y combina a la perfección. La carta de tragos y vinos, tal como la de comida, no es muy larga. Optamos por la degustación de entradas, todas tentadoras, diferentes y con exóticos ingredientes -algunos escritos en lengua indígena- que los garzones explican.

La panera son dos alargadas tablitas con varios bocados curiosos.

Recordé y entendí por qué había leído en algún lugar sobre la “bendita panera” de Peumayén. Esta creativa propuesta cuenta con masitas de las principales culturas originarias chilenas. Es una fiesta: desde dulzones quequitos de la isla de Pascua al antiguo milcao chilote, todo sabrosamente cocinado.

No voy a entrar en detalles porque parte de la experiencia es degustar y sorprenderse in situ, pero resumo que desde ahí en adelante todo fue puro deleite, primando fusiones audaces y sabores novedosos que utilizaban algas, hongos exóticos, carne de caballo o de llamo, e ingredientes que no había escuchado nunca. ¡Qué pocos lugares tienen opciones de esta clase y tan bien preparados!

Los productos son naturales y las carnes usadas eran de animales “felices”, criados y sacrificados de manera no industrial. Punto a favor es la atención al comensal: había muchos extranjeros y los mozos manejaban perfectamente inglés y francés, siempre con buena disposición para explicar los platos y contar la historia del lugar.

El postre también nos sorprendió: plátano acaramelado en miel, cubierto en pipocas y con gelatina de maracuyá, acompañado de helado de limón de pica. Estaba más que delicioso. Hay quienes esgrimen que los precios son un poco elevados, no obstante la rareza de los ingredientes, la investigación culinaria y la experiencia en el restaurante hacen de Peumayén –“lugar de los sueños” en mapudungún- que valga la pena gastar unos pesos de más.

Historic Eco-Victory

Una victoria medioambiental

hile’s government unanimously decided in June to cancel the embattled HidroAysén dam project planned for the Aysén region of Patagonia. The move by the center-left government of President Michelle Bachelet, who began her four-year term in March, fulfills one of Bachelet’s key promises during her presidential campaign last fall. In that race, she repeatedly called HidroAysén “not viable.”

“This is the greatest victory in the history of Chile’s environmental movement,” says Patricio Rodrigo, executive secretary of the Patagonia Defense Council. “HidroAysén would have generated greater concentration in the electric market, destroyed an important ecosystem in Patagonia and ruined tourism development in a region where tourism has its greatest potential.”

Environmental Minister Pablo Badenier said after the June 10 decision that projects such as HidroAysén that do not consider all the impacts they can cause and that do not present sufficient mitigation, restoration and compensation measures “are projects that must be rejected.”

HidroAysén says it might lodge a court appeal. In a statement, the company also said they are still interested in advancing the project, and will thus maintain its water and mineral rights. Still, considering the present political landscape, the project’s promoters would face a steep uphill battle.

n junio, el gobierno de Chile decidió por unanimidad, cancelar el conflictivo proyecto de represas HidroAysén en la región patagónica de Aysén. La medida tomada por el gobierno centroizquierdista de la presidenta Michelle Bachelet, quien comenzó su mandato de cuatro años en marzo, cumple una de las promesas clave de su programa durante su campaña presidencial el pasado otoño. En esos meses calificó repetidamente a HidroAysén como “no viable”.

“Esta es la más grande victoria en la historia del movimiento ambiental de Chile”, dice Patricio Rodrigo, secretario ejecutivo del Consejo de Defensa de la Patagonia. “HidroAysén habría generado una mayor concentración en el mercado eléctrico, destruido un importante ecosistema en la Patagonia y arruinado el desarrollo del turismo en una región donde éste tiene su mayor potencial”.

El ministro de Medio Ambiente, Pablo Badenier, dijo después de anunciar la decisión, que proyectos como HidroAysén, que no consideren todos los impactos que pueden causar, y que no presenten medidas suficientes de mitigación, deben ser rechazados.

HidroAysén podría presentar una apelación judicial. En un comunicado, dijo que la empresa todavía está interesada en promover el proyecto, y por lo tanto mantendrá sus derechos de agua y minerales. Aun así, teniendo en cuenta el actual panorama político, los promotores de la iniciativa se enfrentarían a una dura batalla muy cuesta arriba.

Grosso, a photographer from Villa La Angostura, Argentina, with his tremendous photo of gaucho culture entitled “Doma.” In addition, our readers chose his photo as the recipient of this year’s Readers Choice Award. The 12 winning photos were printed for display during July and August, 2014, in an exhibition at Mall Sport in Santiago.

n March 5, a full-page ad in the New York Times on March 5 declared” “These glaciers do not belong to the State, nor to the Chileans; these glaciers belong to nobody.” It was a founding declaration of independence

by Greenpeace on behalf a new micro-nation: Glacier Republic.

This new country seeks to raise awareness about the threats to Chile’s glaciers if conservation measures are not taken soon. Glaciers in Chile are in a legal limbo, having no law to protect them from largescale mining, among other threats. They are 23,000 km2 of ice, major freshwater reserves and the source of most rivers in the country.

The Glacier Republic allows anyone to become a citizen as a way of demonstrating commitment to the cause. Already, they have embassies in other countries and issue passports. There are more than 100,000 citizens and some have married in situ to demonstrate their "nationality,” such as Enrique Fanta and Nicole Pozo, who got married on the hanging glacier "El Morado.”

At her annual address to the nation on May 21, Chile President Michelle Bachelet announced a legislative bill to protect glaciers and make them compatible with regional and national needs. Hence, Greenpeace perhaps achieved the first goal of its campaign by putting the issue on the political agenda, but the fight continues to fully protect these millennial old glaciers.

l 5 de marzo apareció un anuncio a página completa en el New York Times con la frase: “Los glaciares no son del Estado, ni de los chilenos; los glaciares no son de nadie”. Ese fue el hito fundacional con el que Greenpeace declaraba ante el mundo el nacimiento de una nueva micro-nación: la República Glaciar.

Este nuevo país busca concienciar sobre el peligro que corren los hielos eternos si no se toman medidas de resguardo y conservación.

Los glaciares de Chile están en un limbo legal, al no haber ley que los proteja de las amenazas de la gran minería, entre otras. Son 23.000 km2 de hielos, principales reservas de agua dulce y génesis de la mayoría de los ríos.

La República Glaciar permite a cualquier persona hacerse ciudadano, sellando así un compromiso con la causa. Actualmente tiene embajadas en otros países y un pasaporte. Ya son más de cien mil los ciudadanos inscritos y algunos han llegado a casarse in situ para demostrar su “nacionalidad”: Enrique Fanta y Nicole Pozo celebraron su matrimonio en el glaciar colgante “El Morado”.

En la última cuenta pública del 21 de mayo, la Presidenta Michelle Bachelet, anunció un proyecto de ley que protegerá los glaciares y su entorno, haciéndolos compatibles con necesidades regionales y nacionales. Con este gesto, Greenpeace logra el primer objetivo de su campaña, al poner el tema en la agenda política y continuar su lucha por proteger los milenarios ventisqueros. (Valentina Grimberg)

L

ocated at the southernmost tip of Chile, Punta Arenas is the only city that looks eastward: the sun rises from the sea and sets in the mountains. Here on the shores of the Strait of Magellan, where the Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean meet, the location was originally the subject of much dispute by its founders: some wanted the protection of the southern forest, while others preferred the western pampas that provided more food. Finally, they decided that proximity to Las Minas River, where there was coal, firewood, fresh water and abundant fish, was the place to settle.

Fortunately for those of us who live here, we’re surrounded then by a collage of diverse ecosystems; anyone who visits some of the trails mentioned below will find an immensely rich landscape.

• Monte Fenton trail: located just 9 minutes from Punta Arenas, the trail begins at the Andino Punta Arenas Ski Club Lodge and extends to the highest point of Cerro Fenton (760 m). It's an easy walk that takes about 2 hours, where you can see ancient forests of coigüe and lenga trees; calafate, chaura and michais plants; and interesting birds including woodpeckers, finches and parrots, among others. In addition

unta Arenas se ubica en el extremo sur de Chile y es la única ciudad del país que mira hacia el oriente: el sol sale por el mar y se pone en las montañas. A orillas del Estrecho de Magallanes, donde el océano Pacífico y el Atlántico se abrazan, su ubicación se discutió desde sus orígenes: algunos querían la protección y abrigo del bosque del sur, mientras otros preferían la fauna de la pampa occidental que proveería mayor alimento. Finalmente, dominó la cercanía con el río de la Minas, donde había carbón, leña, agua dulce y pesca abundante.

Para fortuna de los que vivimos aquí, nos encontramos rodeados de un collage de ecosistemas diversos, por lo que recorriendo alguno de los senderos que a continuación presentamos, es posible observar una inmensa diversidad y riqueza paisajística.

• Sendero Monte Fenton: a sólo 9 minutos de Punta Arenas se encuentra el refugio de esquí Club Andino Punta Arenas. Desde allí se inicia el sendero al punto más alto del sector: el cerro Fenton de 760 m. Es una caminata fácil de 2 horas aproximadas, rodeada por antiguos bosques de coigüe, lenga, plantas de calafate, michais o chaura, y una interesante avifauna que incluye carpinteros, loicas y cachanias, entre otros. there are a great variety of mosses and lichens, and one can still find traces of the tunnel entrances to the old Loreto coal mine. Moreover, during the walk there are several lookouts that provide views of the city, the Strait of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego.

• Mount Tarn trail: about 65 km to the south of the city, this is a hike of medium-high difficulty that can take between 8 and 14 hours, depending on the hiker’s conditioning. Starting from the shores of the Strait of Magellan, you ascend among rainforests of Magellanic coigüe, canelo and cypress guaitecas, with moments of abundant and lush vegetation dominated by beautiful mosses and lichens. At roughly 600 meters, you arrive at the vegetation’s upper limit. Continue up the incline to 825 meters, and from there we can see the islands bordering the Brunswick Peninsula and the Strait, as well as Darwson Island, Tierra del Fuego and the highest peaks of the Darwin Mountain Range. Mount Tarn was actually summited by the English naturalist Charles Darwin himself in 1836.

• Hike to San Isidro Lighthouse: via the Brunswick Peninsula coast, 75 km south of Punta Arenas, at the end of the road this path begins. It is an easy 2 to 3 hour walk that crosses beaches, bays and forests. You can see beautiful natural flowers like chilcos, cenecios and dandelions, among others. In addition, one shouldn’t miss the seaweed and logs washed up along the shore, which for many appear as if they are works of art. The geology of the rocks -perfect representatives of the passage of time- and traces of ancient whaling add a sense of mysticism. But the lighthouse is close by, so pick up the pace, and upon arrival, its architecture, beauty and energy will not fail to impress. It was built in 1904, and in 2004 it was completely renovated and converted into a museum and inn.

• Hiking Magallanes National Reserve: west of Punta Arenas, about 9 minutes by car, there are some well developed and maintained trails in this reserve which together take about 3 to 4 hours of low difficulty walking. They are ideal for the whole family. You can find a great variety of wildlife and birds in a lenga and coigue forest. There are also lookouts where you can view Las Minas River, the city, the Strait of Magellan and adjacent islands.

Durante la caminata hay varios miradores que permiten ver la ciudad, el estrecho de Magallanes y Tierra del Fuego.

• Sendero al Monte Tarn: a 65 km al sur de la ciudad se inicia esta caminata de dificultad media alta, que puede tardar entre 8 y 14 horas, dependiendo de la condición de los excursionistas. Partiendo a orillas del Estrecho de Magallanes, va ascendiendo entre bosques húmedos de coigüe magallánico, canelo, ciprés de las guaitecas, con momentos de abundante vegetación dominada por hermosos musgos y líquenes.

Entre los 500 y 600 mt llegamos al límite vegetacional, continuando por una pendiente hasta alcanzar los 825 m. Desde el cerro podemos observar el conjunto de islas que colindan con la península de Brunswick y el Estrecho, así como también la isla Dawson, Tierra del Fuego y las más altas cumbres de la cordillera de Darwin. El monte fue ascendido por dicho eminente naturalista británico en 1836.

• Caminata al Faro San Isidro: por la costa de la Península de Brunswick, a 75 km al sur de Punta Arenas, se acaba el camino al sur y se inicia esta caminata de 2 o 3 horas, de dificultad baja, paseando por playas, bahías y bosques. Vemos hermosas flores naturales de chilcos, cenecios y dientes de león, entre otros, además de algas y troncos arrastrados por el mar, que parecieran obras de arte. La geología de la rocas -perfectas representantes del paso del tiempo- y huellas de antiguas factorías balleneras le agregan misticismo y el Faro, a corta distancia, obliga a acelerar el paso. Al llegar, no deja de conmover su arquitectura, belleza y energía. Construido en 1904, en el 2004 fue totalmente remodelado y convertido en museo y hostería.

• Senderos de Reserva Nacional Magallanes: a sólo 9 minutos en auto hacia el oeste de la ciudad, posee algunos senderos interpretativos muy bien desarrollados y mantenidos, que en su conjunto representan unas 3 o 4 horas de caminatas de dificultad baja. Ideal para toda la familia, se puede encontrar una gran variedad de flora y avifauna magallánica en un bosque de lenga y coigue. También existen miradores donde podemos observar la cuenca del Río de las Minas, la ciudad, el estrecho e islas adyacentes.

In the balance: Puelo’s and Chile’s future El futuro de Puelo y Chile en la balanza

t´s a fact, the rivers of southern Chile are under heavy pressure from energy companies pushing hydropower schemes. But why? The law is clear: if a company does not utilize its freely acquired water rights, or refuses to pay taxes on them, or returns said rights to the State, these rights are then made available on the free market.

That generates high speculation and strong incentive to implement projects no matter the cost. In other words, the more quickly such projects are carried out, the fewer taxes the energy companies are forced to pay. The companies are also able to obtain a swifter rate of return from the water, their principal asset. Under these conditions, we witness quickening attempts to exploit the great rivers of Chilean Patagonia like the Baker, Palena, Futaleufu and Puelo rivers.

Take Mediterráneo, Chile’s largest hydroelectric plant. Approved just days before former President Sebastián Piñera finished his term in office this past March, Mediterraneo includes an electric line with towers up to 140-meters high traversing through the heart of the Cochamó area in northern Patagonia. The power plant and its towers would be in plain sight of the thousands of visitors who come each year to visit the Manso, Puelo and Cochamó valleys. The construction of the plant will forever jeopardize the scenic and pristine nautre of this region.

For the people who live there, those natural attributes are also the most important feature of this gateway to Patagonia. They see how, every year, their land gains in value and the tourism ventures grow in line with the regional government’s own vision of making tourism the key element in Cochamo’s long-term economic growth. The Puelo Valley in particular has tremendous potential with the new border crossing at El Bolson, which will unite the Cochamo municipality with Argentina.

s un hecho que los ríos del sur de Chile están fuertemente presionados por hidroeléctricas. Pero, ¿por qué? La ley es clara: si la empresa no ocupa los derechos de agua –constituidos, en su mayoría, de forma gratuita- o paga impuestos, o devuelve los derechos al Estado, quedando disponibles en el mercado nuevamente.

Este hecho genera una alta especulación y un fuerte incentivo para concretar proyectos a cualquier costo. En otras palabras, entre más pronta la ejecución menos impuestos pagan las empresas y antes obtienen el retorno de los beneficios de su activo: el agua. Esta es la clave de las fuertes presiones que hay sobre los grandes ríos de la Patagonia chilena, como son el Baker, Palena, Futaleufú y Puelo.

Un ejemplo: Mediterráneo, la central de pasada más grande de Chile -aprobada días antes de que Sebastián Piñera dejara el gobierno- posee un diseño de tendido eléctrico que contempla torres de hasta 140 metros de altura, que se emplazarían en el corazón de la comuna de Cochamó. Todo ello, ante la vista de los miles de visitantes que llegan, cada año a los valles del Manso, Puelo y Cochamó. El trazado hipotecará para siempre el valor paisajístico y la naturaleza prístina del territorio.

Dichos atributos naturales son los más importantes de esta puerta a la Patagonia y el activo principal de todos los habitantes de la comuna.

Ellos han visto cómo, cada año, sus tierras han ganado valor y los emprendimientos turísticos han crecido, ajustándose a los lineamientos del gobierno regional, con el turismo como eje central de crecimiento económico. El valle Puelo, se verá potenciado con la habilitación del nuevo paso fronterizo “El Bolsón”, que unirá a la comuna de Cochamó con Argentina.

Yet, regional environmental authorities have chosen to approve what some of the local agencies here considered to be "the lesser evil” -- 63 kilometers of power lines that nobody wants, in order to transport to the national power grid the 220 megawatts produced by this run-of-the-river hydroelectric plant.

With this decision they sacrifice a landscape that belongs to all Chileans and are effectively endorsing the private investors behind the Mediterraneó project, whom, in their desire to minimize costs and maximize profits, proposed a plan that entails the easiest-toimplement power line that rather conveniently does not affect the 100,000-hectacre Fundo Puchiguín property in the Puelo area, owned

by Robert Hagemann, the founding partner of the Mediterraneó project.

Is there an alternative? A 40-kilometer power line crossing Hagemann’s Puchiguín property and its inner peaks, including underground sections and crossing the estuary below the water, is a viable option. However, such a plan has been discarded as being “too expensive.” Unfortunately, in this conflict it appears that the bad is preferable to the good, the ugly to the beautiful.

Thus, the prevailing pattern in Chile repeats once more. The country continues to develop with a high degree of social inequality, where market decisions, without strategic land use planning, make the country’s wealthiest still richer at the expense of the majority, the local communities and their natural resources. For Puelo, this will be a huge, perpetual scar in its heart.

Chile must change The strong, legitimate community opposition of recent years results in legal battles, adding a high degree of uncertainty for all actors involved: communities must divert scarce resources to defend their territory; investments in development are halted; financiers of hydropower projects are uncertain about the return on capital; and the government wears down so it can sustain a system that does not permit the much-needed, precise planning of the nation’s energy matrix.

This must change. If Chile does in fact require these megawatts, it should be carried out with a process where the necessary time is taken for regional planning, including citizen dialogue and participation that results in viable projects in balance with the public interest. Currently, when a project enters the environmental impact evaluation system it is nearly impossible to affect significant changes. The chips have already been played.

Mediterranó is not viable for the Chile we want to build, a country where transparent, well-formulated planning, together with environmental justice and territorial equity, is the path we ought to travel. Till then, we can only ask: what’s the next river under threat?

Sin embargo, la Comisión de Evaluación de Impacto Ambiental de la época, eligió aprobar lo que algunos de los Seremis consideraban “el mal menor”, es decir, un tendido de 63 km y que nadie quiere, para trasladar los 220 megas de energía que aportaría esta gran central de pasada al SIC. Con esto se sacrifica un paisaje que pertenece a todos los chilenos y se avala la decisión de los inversionistas de Mediterráneo, quienes, en su afán de minimizar costos y maximizar ganancias, presentaron el trazado más fácil de ejecutar, que -dicho sea de paso- no afecta al Fundo Puchiguín, de 100.000 há, propiedad de Roberto Hagemann, socio fundador de dicha empresa. ¿La alternativa? Un tendido en línea recta de 40 km cruzando el fundo Puchiguín, que podría usar las cumbres interiores, incluir tramos subterráneos y cruzar el estuario de forma submarina. Pero todo esto se desecha porque, dicen, es “demasiado caro”- . Lo malo es preferible a lo bueno, y lo feo a lo hermoso.

Así se repite el patrón imperante en Chile, que sigue desarrollándose en base a un alto grado de desigualdad, donde las decisiones del mercado, sin un ordenamiento territorial estratégico, conducen a que los más ricos del país aumenten sus capitales, llevándose los recursos de los territorios y sacrificando a las comunidades locales. En el caso de Puelo, será una enorme y perpetua cicatriz en su corazón.

Chile cambió La legítima y fuerte oposición de las comunidades lleva, entre otras acciones, a la jurisprudencia de los proyectos, imprimiendo un alto grado de incertidumbre a todos los actores: las comunidades desvían sus escasos recursos para defender el territorio; las inversiones en desarrollo se detienen; los financistas de los proyectos hidroeléctricos no tienen certeza del retorno del capital y el gobierno se desgasta sosteniendo un sistema que no le permite planificar la matriz energética con exactitud.

Esto debe cambiar. Si Chile realmente requiere los megas, debe ser con un proceso anticipado donde se tome el tiempo necesario para lograr una planificación territorial, que incluya diálogo y participación y que logre viabilizar los proyectos para equilibrar la balanza. Una vez que el proyecto ingresó al Sistema de Evaluación Ambiental, es casi imposible que se generen cambios sustantivos. Las fichas ya están jugadas.

Mediterráneo es inviable para el Chile que queremos construir, donde las planificaciones transparentes, bien formuladas, con justicia ambiental y equidad territorial deban ser el camino a recorrer. ¿Cuál será el próximo río que quedará en la mira?

Huemul I

t forms part of Chile’s national coat of arms, but few Chileans have actually seen it in the wild. Endemic to both Chile and Argentina, the huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) is listed as endangered. Altogether, its estimated there are just less than 2,000 individuals left, with 80 percent found in southern Chile, mainly in the regions of Aysen and Magallanes.

The huemul lives in the forest and steppe, and mostly in remote areas with difficult terrain. Shy, agile and with excellent hearing, they move in small groups of two to three animals, although it is also possible to see them alone. It has a thick body, dark brown fur and the males have a forked antler after about 19 months. This herbivore can grow up up to 5 feet long (160 cm), 3 feet high (100 cm) and reach 265 pounds (120 kilos).

According to Cristián Saucedo, conservation director at Conservacion Patagonica, among the main causes of their drastic decline are the loss and modification of habitat, livestock grazing, domestic livestock-borne diseases, dogs attacking adult huemules and their offspring, introduction of non-native species such as red deer and wild boar, as well as hunting by man​​. For Saucedo, a veterinarian, it is imperative to create links between the public and private sector to fight for the protecting the huemul. "One of the main measures needed is simply protecting and monitoring populations present within protected areas," said Saucedo.

There is some good news for the huemul. In June, Chile canceled HidroAysén, a large-scaled hydropower project that would have ended one of its most important habitats around the Baker River in Aysen.

orma parte del escudo nacional de Chile, pero son pocos los chilenos que han podido verlo en estado silvestre. Originario de Chile y Argentina, el huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) está catalogado en peligro de extinción.

En total, se estima que hay menos de dos mil individuos, donde el 80% de ellos se encuentra en el sur de Chile, principalmente en Aysén y Magallanes.

El huemul vive en el bosque y la estepa, y en su mayoría en áreas remotas y terreno difícil. Tímido, ágil y con un oído excelente, se mueven en pequeños grupos de dos a tres animales, aunque también es posible verlos solos. Tiene una contextura corporal gruesa, un denso pelaje color café oscuro y los machos cuentan con una cornamenta bifurcada a partir de los 19 meses. Un herbívoro que puede llegar a medir 160 centímetros de longitud, 100 cm. de alzada y alcanzar los 120 kilogramos de peso.

Según Cristián Saucedo, director de conservación de la ONG Conservación Patagónica, entre las principales causas del drástico declive es posible mencionar la pérdida y modificación de su hábitat, ganadería, enfermedades transmitidas por el ganado doméstico, ataque de perros a huemules adultos y crías, introducción de especies no nativas como el ciervo rojo y jabalí, además de la caza por parte del hombre. Para el médico veterinario, resulta imperativo generar lazos entre el sector público y privado para luchar por la conservación del huemul. “Una de las principales medidas radica en la protección y monitoreo de poblaciones presentes al interior de áreas protegidas,” dice Saucedo. Últimamente, ha habido buenas noticias para el huemul.
