Lieutenant Governor's Greeting Hello Sharks! We've officially ended summer (boohoo), and are now on the countdown until school starts. However, there's no need for tears, as EA Josephine has prepared a special page in the newsletter telling you exactly what you have to look forward to once school starts! I hope that you all had a great summer, and are getting ready to hit the books again. If not, don't worry-you still have a few days to prepare yourself! Regardless of what grade you're entering in the fall, enter with the confidence and readiness to succeed, and fail sometimes. Failure is just your (F)irst (A)ttempt (I)n (L)earning. Let's get ready to tackle our school year, and continue our 9reat service year!

Patricia Ahmed Division 9 Lieutenant Governor

Executive Assistant's Greeting Hey Sharks! I hope you’ve all had an amazing summer, whether it was spent in a relaxing or productive manner. Looking back, I think I had a pretty eventful and fulfilling break. Now there is less than a week until school starts, which I’m especially dismayed about. I’m going to be a senior in a matter of days, and be introduced to the wonderful world of more AP classes and college applications! Actually, despite for what’s ahead, I’d like to manage my priorities better and think positively. That’s where I got the inspiration to create “9 Reasons Not to Cry During Back to School Season,” which is probably my favorite page in our August Newsletter. I hope you find it funny and/or useful, and plan to have the best Key Club filled/school year yet.

Governor's Project:

The Honeybee Conservancy is a 501c3 nonprofit established in 2009 in response to the bee crisis. To help the bees, they inspire communities to plant bee habitat and act as stewards for bees, support bee research in an effort to end bee population declines, advance science and environmental education, support local food initiatives, and encourage communities to support their local beekeepers.

The Honeybee Conservancy Fun Facts These amazing insects pollinate over 80% of all flowering plants including 70 of the top 100 human food crops. Honeybees pollinate plants that produce about a quarter of the food Americans consume. Bees are responsible for one out of every three bites of food we eat. Most crops grown for their fruits (including vegetables such as squash, cucumber, tomato and eggplant), nuts, seeds, fiber (such as cotton), and hay (alfalfa grown to feed livestock), require pollination.

9 Reasons Why Not to Cry During Back to School Season 1. Back to school shopping! 2. Short term motivation to do well in school! 3. High grades for the first marking period (& hopefully the rest!) 4. Fall + Halloween! 5. Sweater weather! 6. Your favorite TV show is back! 7. Seeing your friends again! 8. More Key Club events! 9. Fall Rally!

YOU'RE INVITED TO THE

70th Annual Leadership Training Conference MARCH 23 - MARCH 25, 2018 |Â DESMOND HOTEL, ALBANY NY

This year's theme is "Celebrate the Service"!

Division 9 Week Sunday: President's Council Meeting (PCM) Monday: Outdoor Movie (CANCELLED) Tuesday: Whitney Musuem Wednesday: CAAV's Asian Youth in Action Presents: Our Roots Thursday: Officer Picnic and S'mores Friday: Reading Program for Kids Saturday: Pool Party/Divisional

Day 1: President's Council Meeting Besides the usual President's Council Meetings that occur after our divisionals, I like to meet with the presidents of my clubs to update them on what's going on in our division and district. It was only fitting to have a President's Council Meeting on the first day of Division 9 Week, to go over our goals for the school year together, and give the presidents a review of what's been going on and what to except in the upcoming months. It was an extremely productive meeting where each president bounced ideas off of each other, while bonding over food and tea. In the future, I hope to elaborate with even more presidents, so we can continue this service year successfully!

Day 2: Whitney Museum Division 9 Week started on Sunday, August 6th. Today is Wednesday, August 9th and our activity for the day is to attend to the Whitney Museum with our favorite LTG Patricia Ahmed. I was a bit late since I decided to go last minute so Patricia was already looking around the art to check things out. When I got there, the other Anthony already disappeared, so we walked around the museum just to see if there were any good places to take some photos. Museums aren't my thing besides just for the aesthetic pictures for Instagram or for other people. Most of the time I don't get the art but it was pretty fun hanging with Patricia. We didn't stay too long, though. As we left, there was a store right in front of the place where you purchase the tickets so we decided to check it out since we didn't have anything else to do. I would suggest to go to the Whitney Museum only if you are under 18 cause tickets of course are for free if you have an I.D with you or you just want to see the art and hang

Day 3: CAAV'S Asian Youth in Action Presents: Our Roots For the 3rd day of Division Week, I attended an event called “Our Roots” presented by CAAAV's Asian Youth in Action. This was essentially a small arts exhibition that took place in Chinatown on August 9th. This art exhibit sprouted in reaction to the racism Asians collectively face such as stereotypes, violence, gentrification, etc. Surrounding these themes, the exhibition featured the voices of numerous Asian Americans and immigrants through poems, creative writing pieces, canvas, and digital art. This event was very interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I especially liked how we were able to meet the talented people whose work was being displayed, including our own NYDKC Governor, Gavin Li. This exhibit was not only eye-opening but also educational. I learned about the Model Minority Myth and the origins of the stereotype that “ALL Asians are smart and are good at math”. Overall, the event was filled with so much positive energy and support and I’m glad I attended.

Day 4: Officer Picnic As part of Division 9 Week, I had attended the Officer Picnic and S’mores. I came with my LTG, Eric Zhao. Initially, I was apprehensive to attend. I thought I would feel left out as I was from another division. By the end of it, I had a great time and got to meet new people! When I came with Eric, we were wandering around lost in Prospect Park until we saw another Division 9 member. It turned out we were early and we decided to sit down on some picnic tables while we waited for more people to come. Eventually the people began to roll in, and so did food. I got to chat with other D9 sharks, while enjoying delicious food. Because of the picnic, I got to strengthen my interdivisional and interclub bonds by getting to meet and talk to these people. I look forward to S’MORE Division 9 events in the future!

Day 5: Reading Program for Kids I went to the Reading Program for Kids at Leif Ericson Park on Friday, August 11th. I was excited to interact with the kids and and help them read. It was a struggle to find the park. I was with a fellow Key Clubber and we thought the event was at a different park. We walked almost 15 blocks just to realize that we had to walk back. However, I'm glad we held out and participated in the event! Many of the kids were apprehensive about approaching the other Key Clubbers. I felt so accepted when one girl name Racheal asked me to read a book for her. In general, the event was a great way to promote the importance of reading and to meet other Key Clubbers.

Mr. Gioia's Annual Pool Party

Mr. Gioia's pool party was so much fun! It was a great way to startnew friendships with people from different Key Clubs across Brooklyn as well as Staten Island. It allowed me to connect with more with people that enjoy the same things as I do; such as, well, Key Club. The commute was so long but for many of us it was one heck of an experience! From being bombarded with deals by ticket vendors for the ferry who thought we were tourists, to walking a bajillion miles to the actual site of the divisional, it was incredibly fun. At Mr. Gioia’s house, we were greeted with smiles by his entire family and went straight to the pool. We got through all the divisional stuff pretty quickly, but the fun started after all of that.

From there, we were able to introduce ourselves to each other and all of that made me realize how easy it is to put yourself out there in Key Club. Everyone gave off that same warm and welcoming vibe that made me feel like talking on and on for hours, despite them not even knowing me at first. We ended the day with a series of pictures on the Staten Island Ferry that marked the beginnings of friendships amongst some people, but a strong indication of continuing friendship among the rest. I love Key Club! Ayan Rahman Editor Brooklyn Technical High School
