Lieutenant Governor's Greeting Happy New Year Sharks!
New years are always a time for reflections and resolutions. This year, I reflected on all of the hit and misses of our division, and my resolutions included how I could continue the success of our division thus far. Although it is the start of the new year, our current service year is still pushing on even though it is quickly nearing its end. Whenever I was told that the service year would fly by, I would always think they were exaggerations. Now, I know it is to be true. I hope as the end of the service year nears, you recognize the hard work and dedication that you've put into the making our division 9reat. Regardless of whether you are a member or officer, we each have the power to change the world through this organization-so let's continue to that until LTC in March.Â
For now, I would like to congratulate Flora Tsui for becoming the Lieutenant Governor-Elect. You can expect her introduction towards the end of the newsletter. Let's all give her a warm welcome as she joins the rich history of Division 9 Lieutenant Governors.
Patricia Ahmed Division Nine Lieutenant Governor
Executive Assistant's Greeting Happy New Year Sharks!
A new year comes with a myriad of hope, possibilities, and resolutions. But if you’re like me and have other priorities, those pretty resolutions often break by the first week, or even the second day of January. Through many, many lists of goals that have never been checked off, I have realized that sometimes it’s a matter of too many goals, or that there’s not enough work being put into them.
This year (or the last remaining months of our service year), I challenge you to do something new. If you’re just a casual member who attends meetings, sign up for the next event that intrigues you! If you do attend events but feel like you’re not getting the most out of it, take initiative in the following service project and make friends with someone new! Talk to your officers if you have some suggestions for improvement, join a committee, run for a club position! There are so many possibilities in Key Club and a reasonable amount of time to follow through with it, especially if you’re an underclassman. Key Club’s motto is “Caring - Our Way of Life,” and I really do hope that taking on a challenge or becoming more active can enable all of you amazing members to realize what it means to you. All of us who are of higher positions - lieutenant governors, district officers, and club officers - started out with a similarity: that we were once members, and still continue to be. It takes some coaxing and difficulty, but if you push yourself to be a little greater in this club you voluntarily chose to join, you would do yourself, and possibly the world, the biggest favor.

District Project Sunrise Day Camps are the world’s only dedicated day camps for children with cancer and their siblings, provided completely free of charge. Providing memorable summers since 2006 for children ages 3 1/2–16, Sunrise Day Camps bring the simple pleasures of childhood back to children struggling with cancer, changing months of loneliness and isolation into summers filled with sunshine, laughter and happiness. Because Sunrise is a day camp, it does all this while allowing the children to continue their medical treatment and enjoy the comfort and safety of their own homes at night.

Running for Why run for higher office? District and International positions require a significant time commitment, and these officers must be skilled with time management. When deciding between a District and International position it is important to remember that the higher the position, the less direct communication with members. District officers are expected to communicate with club officers in addition to Lt. Governors, but Trustees are only required to communicate with their assigned Governors. Trustees may choose to communicate directly with Lt. Governors, or with the Lt. Governors through the Governor, but it can be difficult to communicate with club officers when there are so many other responsibilities. If you are passionate about getting directly involved with the members, you may lean more towards a District position. You have the opportunity to make a long-lasting change on the opportunities that future Key Clubbers will have in their home clubs, divisions, and district. Â

Brooklyn Tech HS The Van Cortlandt Park event I attended was physically demanding but worth it! My friend and I arrived at the last stop of the 1 train to help with trail maintenance at Van Cortlandt Park. We spread woodchips all over the park, which create paths for trucks to go in and out of the park easily. While the task was long and challenging, I learned the importance of trail maintenance. Using woodchips on trails contributes to a more sustainable environment. Woodchips are great for the environment, for it reduces the need to send fallen trees to the landfill and waste fuel. Woodchips are a great way to reuse our natural resources and lessen our carbon footprint. The adults there were very nice to the volunteers as well. At the end of the event, they continuously thanked the volunteers for our efforts, which I was touched by.

Divisional Hello sharkies! For those of you who don’t know me or have never seen my face, I’m Flora! I served as Vice President of my home club (Midwood) and Executive Assistant during the service year of 2015-2016! I had a small resting year and now I’m back at it, you can call me a Whale Shark. Although I am quite the opposite in size, I hope to come off to you all the same way the whale shark possess no danger to the human race. Gentle giants who look awfully silly. Key Club has been running down my family for 11 years and counts and it is something that means beyond words to me. I have many goals I wish to accomplish during my term and I hope to see returning faces along my great adventure for the relentless constant support you all never failed to give. I can not promise that I will be an outstanding Lieutenant Governor who can perform magic and change Division 9 history forever. However I can promise to every face that I see to the end of the future, and to everyone I know now that I will try my best to establish to the world that Division 9 is full of loving, hardworking, courageous, and crazy people who never stop changing the world. My goal at the end of the year is for the world to tell me that Division 9 is the best division out there because that’s the truth. Feel free to ask me for fun facts about the ocean! I have thousands prepared.
