Lieutenant Governor's Greeting Happy July Sharks! What an amazing summer it has been so far! July has been both fun and productive for me: going to Key Club events, planning events with Josephine, all while juggling studying for the SAT and working on my summer assignments. I also had the privilege of being able to attend ICON at the beginning of this month, which was an unforgettable experience for two reasons: having a high fever for half the trip and getting to meet Key Clubbers from across the world the other half! During this weeklong trip, I was reminded of why I began my Key Club journey and came back, more passionate about serving others. The days are truly flying by, and I want to make sure that we have time to enjoy the rest of the summer doing what we love: serving others. Therefore, Josephine and I have been planning something super exciting...be on the lookout in my emails and on the Facebook group!

Executive Assistant's Greeting Hey Sharks! I can’t believe we’re already nearing the end of July. My summer’s been extremely busy, with working at a hospital and running to SAT prep 5 days a week. Nevertheless, I still have time to do the two things I love: getting dessert and volunteering! And if you’re experiencing the same pain as me, just remember that you’re going to have a bright future and you’re getting paid for it. There weren’t as many events in July, but we’re going to make up for that next month! We’ll be having the second annual Division 9 Week, an ENTIRE week of bonding, which will also end with Mr. Gioia’s pool party/divisional with Division 10 (Staten Island)! Everyone is welcome, regardless of the division they’re in. Stay active, my amazing sharks. because service never stops (not even if it’s 5am and you slightly fear for your life.) Get excited for August, because Patricia and I are cooking up something 9reat for all of you!

2017 Key Club International On July 2nd, over thirty New York district key clubbers travelled to San Antonio, Texas for ICON! Since our flight was delayed, the downstate kids didn't arrive until four in the afternoon. Our first stop as a district was to the Spaghetti Warehouse! Later that night, we had our summer board meeting where we discussed the agenda for the week and got our district shirts! The next morning, we went down to downtown San Antonio for the Riverwalk Boat Tour. Not only was the view beautiful, we all learned a lot about the history of the area. That afternoon, we went to Six Flags Fiesta! We were able to go on both the roller coasters and water rides, woohoo! Some of us, me, screamed their hearts out and lost their voice. For the 4th of July, we visited the Alamo where we were able to see the remains from the Battle of the Alamo. It was truly a historical site. Later in the day, we went to Sea World for lunch and dinner. Since I love the adrenaline rush from rides, I went on almost all the rides at Sea World and watched a sea lion show. On our way back to the lodge, the adults treated us to ice cream from Diary Queen! It was delicious. That was the end of our tour before the international convention.Â

Convention Recap (ICON) From July 5-8, we stayed at the Grand Hyatt for the international convention. Despite not having a voice, the convention was truly remarkable. I met people from various districts, learned so much more about Key Club and formed an inseparable bond with the New York district. The first night, we had a meet and greet with bouncy houses. I was in awe of all that I could do, from playing jumbo jenga to just dance, I decided to trade LTC pins with other districts. Throughout the convention, I attended workshops, dances, exhibit halls, caucuses, and much more! There were a lot of giveaways; I got free shirts, flash drives, stickers and more. It was truly a memorable first ICON experience. I cannot wait to make this year's district convention just as spectacular as the international convention. I would love to go to Chicago next summer for the 75th International Convention!

Bayside, Midwood, & Stuyvesant's Ice Skating Fundraiser Midwood, alongside Bayside and Stuyvesant Key Club, hosted an ice skating fundraiser on July 15th at the World Ice Arena. The event was really fun since it allowed people from divisions 8, 9, and 11 to bond and make new friends. I saw many people who I've met at past events and also saw many of my fellow sharks. I hadn't been ice skating since I was around 10 so ice skating this time was pretty nerve wracking. Thankfully one of my good friends helped me out with that as well as my webmaster. It was really nice to see people helping each other out whether it was by helping them get up when they fell or by keeping them steady. At the end of the event we fundraised over $200!! Overall, I really enjoyed the experience and I can't wait for the annual Division 9 Ice Skating Fundriaser! I hope to see many of you there!Â

Brooklyn Waterfront Tastes On July 9th, I attended Brooklyn Waterfront Tastes. This event is to help fund for bike trails around neighborhoods in Brooklyn. The event itself felt long, but it was fun meeting new people. We got to talk while setting up tents and unloading items from a van. As we were setting up, I remember getting excited when seeing the food. Everything looked so put together and well made. After all the labor was done, we finally got to enjoy ourselves. However, some of us had to greet and check in guests. During the process, we met many nice people and saw a friendly dog. The food was really good but some wasn't suited for my taste. I still enjoyed being there though. While eating, i was able to talk more to other volunteers. As a result, I’m now connected with them on social media platforms. At the end, I’m glad I attended this event. Sally Feng Member Midwood High School

Tending to a Growing Garden This past Sunday was quite the sunny day, perfect weather for some gardening. The event occurred at the Lefferts Historic House in Prospect Park around noon in collaboration with the Prospect Park Alliance. When members arrived, they each received gardening gloves and a forged trowel and got right to work on pulling weeds out from the garden. We were joined by others from the neighborhood community and little kids that just finished visiting the Lefferts Historic House or the Prospect Park Zoo; this generated a high amount of work being done in less amount of time. All this hard work paid off in the end, with the result being that the garden in front of the House now allows for the potato plot to grow without interruption and the flowers to receive the nutrition they deserve for blooming. After a hard day's work, we enjoyed some fun activities that the House provided.Â

Service Though the school year has just ended, Key Club is continuing our journey over the summer by providing more events for members to bond with others! Currently, Brooklyn Tech Key Club has participated in the Honeygrow and United by Blues upper bay cleanup and we helped out at Races for Faces. We are all working together to find more events that will have a more direct impact on our community, including more cleanups and advocacy. Some of our upcoming events include the Gowanus Clean and Green event and several walks for different illnesses. We are extremely excited for the upcoming year and hope to become a stronger, more united club. Go D9! Kathy Song President Brooklyn Technical High School

Spotlights I arrived late at Valentino Pier and Park by twenty minutes because I was struggling to find the B61 stop. When I got off, I felt the harsh sun as I walked a couple of blocks over to the park. I quickly got to work signing in my name, grabbing my equipment (garbage bags, gloves, pickup sticks), and saying a few words of greeting. I saw some teenagers over at the small beach. I went over assuming they were from Brooklyn Tech and they were. We picked a multitude of trash from cigarette butts to broken glass bottles to plastic bags. There was a rocky crag to the right side of us where you could stand on, overseeing the whole park. Unfortunately, there was a lot of garbage stuck between those rocks. We did this for several hours taking small breaks in between. After it was over, we saw someone find a pair of crutches, another guy had a single shoe, while someone got a mop! We enjoyed a couple of lime custard pies, granola coconut mix, and refreshing water. Looking back, I gained an extra appreciation for nature and a sense of pride over the newly clean park.
