Lieutenant Governor's Greeting Hey Sharks! Surprise! It's a new newsletter format! After checking out newsletters from all around ISSUU, I was inspired to switch up my format and try something new. I hope you guys enjoy reading this newsletter as much as I enjoyed creating it for you. June was such a busy month, and I'm definitely proud of what we've been able to accomplish thus far! Despite summer creeping up on us, I hope you all remember that Key Club does not stop in the summer. We are still going to be sweating it out, serving others, and of course, making friends and memories! Let's keep the ball rolling, shall we?

Patricia Ahmed Division 9 Lieutenant Governor

Division Board's Greeting Greetings Key Clubbers! Two weeks ago, I attended my first DTC. Although the weather was ever-changing and my feet were hurting at the end of the day, it was an amazing experience. I even had the pleasure of hosting a workshop with the EAs from the city divisions! I didn’t expect it to go as well as it did, and thank you if you attended it! June also signals the end of the school year, but never the end of Key Club! I encourage you all to remain active and dedicated! And of course, attend events held by other clubs and divisions! It may seem scary at first, but it’s a great way to have fun and meet new people. Since becoming your EA, I’ve made so many friends and attended numerous events. I know every member and officer is capable of doing the same, since you’re all in Key Club and passionate about making a difference. I hope you enjoy this edition of our newsletter, and have a great summer!

Josephine Wu Executive Assistant

Hey Key Clubbers! It's finally the summer (which is my favorite season!) and the temperature is getting warmer! I am excited for all the events to come over the summer! One event I am really looking forward to is the August Divisional on August 13! Also I hope to see

District Project

Sunrise Day Camps are the world’s only dedicated day camps for children with cancer and their siblings, provided completely free of charge. Providing memorable summers since 2006 for children ages 3 1/2–16, Sunrise Day Camps bring the simple pleasures of childhood back to children struggling with cancer, changing months of loneliness and isolation into summers filled with sunshine, laughter and happiness. Because Sunrise is a day camp, it does all this while allowing the children to continue their medical treatment and enjoy the comfort and safety of their own homes at night.

Governor's Project

The Honeybee Conservancy is a 501c3 non-profit established in 2009 in response to the bee crisis. To help the bees, they inspire communities to plant bee habitat and act as stewards for bees, support bee research in an effort to end bee population declines, advance science and environmental education, support local food initiatives, and encourage communities to support their local beekeepers.

International Convention Hey D9 Sharks! This is your treasurer speaking. We're all heading out to ICON soon and I'm super excited to meet people from all over Key Club and help elect our international board for the 20172018 service year. I plan on bringing back new ideas and service resources for clubs to use so stay tuned! - District Treasurer Chevy Chen

July 5 - 9

Hi Sharks! I'm super excited to be going down to San Antonio this year for ICON! I can't wait to see all my friends from different districts that I met last year in Atlanta. I'm super excited to see all the new workshops this year and try all the food down in Texas. I'm also going to try my hardest to bring back a W for New York District. Hope to see y'all soon! - IP Distinguished Division 17 Lieutenant Governor & International Trustee Candidate Tyler Kearns

Fun Things to Do in the City this Summer! Check out the food places that your friends always share videos of on Facebook! Check out a book (or two, or twenty) from your local library! Binge watch a new series on Netflix! Watch the fireworks IRL instead of on TV on July 4th! Get your friends together for a karaoke night! Visit a museum you haven't before, and explore! Pet some animals at a zoo! Take a trip to Governor's Island (this is my favorite place to hold a picnic with friends!) Smell the roses at Brooklyn Botanic Garden! Make a new friend! Hold a cool get-together; this can easily be turned into a Key Club event/fundraiser! Attend club, divisional, and interdivisional events across the city!

Brooklyn Tech’s Atlantic Avenue BID Spring Volunteer Day Atlantic Ave BID Spring Volunteer Day was an event where we cleaned the tree pits. It was a rainy morning and I was complaining about the weather with my friend. Thankfully, the rain stopped, and the air was chilly when I arrived there. I picked up the tools and partnered up with another volunteer. We introduced ourselves to each other, and we learned that both of us are from Brooklyn Tech. We talked as we did the work and while we were cleaning, both of us realized how little we know about plants. We got confused many times while identifying whether or not a plant is a weed. We even tried to Google the weed plants in NYC, and it helped us a little. After cleaning the weeds and garbages, we had a delicious lunch. I am grateful that this event provided me an opportunity to help to keep our neighborhood clean, to recognize different types of weeds, and to meet new friends who are from other schools too!

Qianting Chen Brooklyn Technical High School Secretary

Volunteers were given a bag filled with supplies such as a plastic bag, a map, and a rake to help them.

Kiwanis Anti-Bullying Walk Firstly, I arrived late to the event, so I didn’t get to walk with the group. However, I still walked the whole Brooklyn Bridge myself. I was surprised to see that the Anti-Bullying Walk was not a huge event, as compared to the AIDS Walk or March of Dimes. When I arrived at the courthouse, I was shocked because there were a lot of people. It was a humid day, but still a lot of people came out to support the cause. The speeches given were very meaningful. Since the meeting was held outside a courthouse, it attracted attention. The topic of Key Club helping to end bullying made me happy. It made me feel like my club has the ability to end bullying. Key Club makes students feel included.

Sandy Xia Edward R. Murrow High School Editor

Together, we can put an END to bullying.

Bensonhurst Community Cleanup The Bensonhurst Cleanup was the first event that I attended in a while. Waking up early to pick up trash and help the environment was an exciting way to start the weekend! It was very humid outside, which didn’t help but with the great company, my mood changed. I was in a group with Josephine Leung (the District Executive Assistant), Shu (Division 8A’s LTG), Patricia (Division 9’s LTG). and Josephine Wu (Division 9’s Executive Assistant). However, it started raining, and it didn’t end there. These dedicated individuals continued to pick up trash. I can’t believe that they were so determined to keep the neighborhood clean! In the end, we all enjoyed pizza as a celebration for our hard work.

Divisions 8-12 Divisional Training Conference Being part of Key Club was always important for me. I tried my hardest to attend every meeting and participate in as many events. Today I am the President of the James Madison High School and with much pleasure I can say I am ready to begin this journey with my many colleagues and amazing board. At DTC, the workshops there were amazing. I learned so much and I definitely took down as many notes and ideas as I could to expand the involvement of my school with this life-changing program. The first workshop I attended was the Endorsed Project workshop, where Mr.Portnoy gave us a great amount of examples we could use in order to raise money for awareness of many foundations. The second workshop I attended was the President/Vice President hosted by Ms.Pun and Ms.Liu, where the roles and duties of the President were introduced to me. The last but not least workshop was the DIY pillows where we learned to make tiny pillows (my personal favorite). Overall the warm environment that everyone provides for new comers like me was amazing and it was beautiful to see our community come together.

Elizabeth Dosman Fernandez James Madison High School President

Together, we raised $713 for the Thirst Project!

Dream Prom On June 27th, a couple of friends and I attended Dream Prom 2017. I can honestly say from the bottom of my heart, that this was such an amazing experience that I would never forget. The prom was dedicated to students with special needs and to guarantee that they experience a stupendous prom. At first I was too shy to dance with the other students, but after seeing everyone boogie on the dancefloor, we all gathered together to join. Being able to spend time with one another was incredibly humbling and I believe it really opened our eyes. We ate pasta, cheeseburgers and a LOT of ice cream. All of us took so many pictures in the photobooth to remember this day. It was so so so fun and I will definitely be coming back next year!
