Celebrating women with closer family tied! S

ome 150 years ago the late Brigham Young - leader of the Latter Day Saint movement noted among his numerous inspirational writings that “You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation.” Today those interesting comments continue to linger in our minds as we seek solutions to address issues affecting women in our communities. The celebration and declaration of March as National Women's History Month in perpetuity was another extraordinary opportunity for women in 1987. A special Presidential Proclamation is issued every year, which honors the remarkable achievements of American women. Since then women’s month has been recognizing how women have impacted our lives and the community.

The significance of it reflects the indisputable influence and impact of women throughout the generation, which has often been overlooked and undervalued. A women’s month also offers the opportunity for people to recognize and appreciate the accomplishment of women. This is also the time for women to be educated about their rights and for men to consider women as an equal partner in relationship and work environment. However, Congress should put in place better programs to assist especially black women who are dying from preventable diseases, social ills, and causes. Heart disease, obesity,

hypertension, HIV/Aids, diabetes, and physical violence are all preventable. Furthermore, it is estimated that a single female who are struggling to meet the needs of their family now heads 70% of the African American households. Black women with children regardless of educational and employment status are living paycheck to paycheck as fathers are running away from their responsibilities. However, in several cases state and federal programs would only assist single women including the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) limited rental assistance program for low-income families and single adults

living in homeless or domestic violence shelters. Priority has been given to households that have lived in shelters the longest which exclude adult men and fathers. The HUD rents assistance program to low-income tenants is destroying the African American families as women are forced to raise children without a father at home. If we are serious about celebrating women, we need to put in place programs that encourage women to keep their family together even during a time of hardships. As several studies revealed that the family is more stable and children are more disciplined when both parents are living in the same space. Let us celebrate and support our women with closer family tied. Patrick Maitland patrick@streethype.net

Stop gun and gang violence in our community R

emind me again how long we've been fighting for Gun Control. In the weeks since a young gunman killed 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Florida, there has been a national reckoning from student-led rallies to the wall-to-wall media coverage ― all about gun violence and how to stop it. For some of the activists who have long been mobilized around ending gun violence, the current wave of public attention and outrage over the issue is welcome. But, it also begs the question, "why has there’s been comparatively little attention and anger focused on the more common reality of routine gun homicides throughout the country. The violent activities disproportionately affect communities of color. It is a fact that in America, black men and women are far more likely to be victims of lethal gun violence. Every year, there are more than 6,000 black homicide victims across the nation. That means 6,000 people whose lives have been needlessly cut short, who leave behind grieving families and devastated communities. Meanwhile, today it remains easy to access the weapons used in the vast majority of these shooting. The NYPD has a gun buyback program where anyone can turn in any gun at their local precinct with no questions asked. A handgun rifle fetches $200 while its $200 a shotgun. Payment incentives are a great way to remove guns from the street and out of the hands of the youth and away from street gangs. However, It is both alarming and unac-

Bring housing services to Bronx and Brooklyn residents: Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell

Grenada PM promises national healthcare but no timetable ST GEORGE’S, Grenada: rime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell reaffirmed his commitment to national healthcare for Grenada, should his New National Party (NNP) be re-elected to government in the March 13 general election, in a campaign rally speech. However, there has been no timetable made readily available to the public on the progress of the healthcare inputs made by his administration to date. “We have watched our health care system in this country over the years – governments go, governments come. We have seen the fundamental problems… I want to tell you, in the next term of our government, starting March 14, we are going to move speedily and implement a National Health Insurance,” Mitchell said. Accounting for the inputs and what exactly is the status of the healthcare initiative is unclear in the Grenadian budget or through any of the other sources identified in the effort. Notably, the Grenadian National Health Insurance Secretariat was launched in November 2017. While registration was reported to have started in August 2017, no further indicators have been presented to the public as to the number of registrants and no further update on the National Health Strategy 2016-2025 has been made public. An agreement to provide technical support was also reportedly signed between the Grenadian government and the St Augustine Campus of the University of the West Indies.

‘They Are False Allegations’ Says Mayor Thomas By Kimmy Blair Street Hype Writer ount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas is refuting allegations that he stole campaign funds and lied about money he diverted from his inaugural committee for personal benefit. New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman and Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli announced the arrest of Mayor Thomas on a felony complaint on last Monday after an investigation that exposed the theft of approximately $12,900 from Thomas’s campaign committee, and the diversion of over $45,000 from his inaugural committee for personal use and his failure to disclose it. "The allegations are not true. I want to reassure the people of Mount Vernon that this has nothing to do with my service in office as it relates to the campaign," Thomas said at a press conference shortly after his arrest. Carl Bernstein, the attorney representing Mayor Thomas, said: “The allegations announced by the Attorney General are unfounded and Mayor Thomas strongly proclaims his innocence. The Mayor’s 2015 campaign never, in any way, intended to violate the law and expects that, through the justice system, his name will be completely cleared of any wrongdoing. The mayor and

The allegations are not public corruption, and they are campaign infractions that

could have been handled with simple amendments to paperwork filed. If the Attorney General wanted to rid the City of Mount Vernon of corruption, he would be

teaming up with Mayor Thomas, who has made public ethics a top priority and has done more to fight corruption than any of his predecessors in City Hall. ” Thomas has agreed to surrender his passport and will appear back in court in May. The accusations are entirely independent of the Office of the Mayor, or the official duties of Mayor Thomas. In 2017, Thomas made headlines by feuding with his city comptroller, alleging she mismanaged city funds that lead to bounce checks for city employees. He also made headlines in 2016 when he had a feud with a councilman over who was responsible for the skyrocketing cost of an emergency operations center that was taking longer than expected to retrofit and complete. Thomas has become at least the eighth current or former New York or New Jersey mayor to face criminal charges in the last 16 months, following: Alex Blanco, from Passaic, New Jersey; Julianne Beckerman, from Muttontown, New York; Joey Torres, from Paterson, New Jersey; Nicholas Poliseno, from Spotswood, New Jersey; Rick Nelson, from Stillwater, New York; Dayton King, from Gloversville, New York; Thomas Cox, from Cohocton, New York.

Police seek man accused of raping 12-year-old girl

P

olice are asking for help finding a man accused of raping a 12-year-old girl in Brooklyn after bursting from her shower. Sources say the man was carrying a knife when he sexually assaulted the girl back on March 5. They say she was alone inside her home on Remsen Avenue and Farragut Road in Canarsie, when she went to the bathroom, and the man jumped out from behind the shower curtain. Neighbors tell us they are concerned. "That's devastating," one said. "Like I said, this area here is fairly quiet. You have working class, hardworking people. So for something like that to happen is a little crazy." "I feel terrible because I have an 11-year-old granddaughter and sometimes she walks by herself," said another neighbor. "It's crazy." Sources say the man was wearing nothing but a ski mask and winter gloves.

CARIBBEAN NEWS Another state of emergency in Jamaica KINGSTON, Jamaica: second district state of emergency has been proclaimed in Jamaica for the St Catherine North Police Division, citing a considerable rise in gang related crime and murders in the area as the primary reason. In a press conference on Sunday, Jamaica’s prime minister, Andrew Holness, flanked by members of the armed services of Jamaica and other national security officials, stated that this new state of emergency will last for 14 days. Earlier this year, a state of emergency was proclaimed for St James Parish, which includes the tourist area of Montego Bay, for 14 days on January 19, which was later extended to May 2018. Holness said in his statement with regard to the latest state of emergency for St Catherine: “The security forces will have extraordinary powers, and some rights will be suspended. Jamaican Dancehall Artiste Sues Pop Star Miley Cyrus

A

By Xavier Murphy lourgon, a Jamaican dancehall artiste, has filed suit against American pop star Miley Cyrus, claiming that she used “the hook” of his 1988 song “We Run Things” without his permission. The suit is asking for $300 million, an amount said to exceed Cyrus’s entire net worth. Flourgon, whose real name is Michael May, says that Cyrus took the line “we run things, things nuh run we” in her 2013 hit song “We Can’t Stop.” Flourgon, 53, believes that 50 percent of “We Can’t Stop” belongs to him and, according to the lawsuit, has accused Cyrus of exploiting his “unique and creative lyrical phraseology in order to establish an overarching and pervasive theme … in the realm of self-discovery and self-governing.” The Jamaican has told his attorney to sue Cyrus and the Sony record company to stop any further distribution, sale, or performance of the song. Flourgon, who is from the Red Hills area of Kingston was one of the biggest dancehall stars of the 1980s, with hits like “Bounce,” “Big Batty Gal,” and “Love Me Lover Bad,” in addition to “We Run Things.” The Red Hills community had a strong sound

system movement in the ‘80s, and several big acts originated there, including Red Dragon, the younger brother of Flourgon; Daddy Lizard; and Buju Banton. In more recent times, numerous major pop stars, including Drake, Jaz, and Rihanna, have sampled Jamaican dancehall songs, a practice that has angered Jamaican musicians like Sean Paul, who believe that Jamaican performers have never been adequately recognized for their contributions.

Flourgon’s lawsuit alleges that the lyrics “distinctly” belong to the Jamaican as they have “roots in Jamaican Patois,” which has a unique phraseology and linguistic combinations that are not grammatically correct when translated into English. Fourgon believes that Cyrus “built her career” off the “We Can’t Stop” single, which marked a dramatic change in her style from former Disney star to a more gritty, edgy, and sexualized performer.

By Anthony Turner Street Hype Writer oundation artiste Papa Biggy has been singled out for an "Award of Appreciation" at the upcoming Black Royalty African Heritage Expo which will be held on Saturday, March 10 at Fatima Hall, 20171 Baldwin Street, Waterbury, Connecticut. With songs such as How You Plant Corn, Careless Fearless, Your Dreams and his latest recording, the inspirational "Walk With God" and "Not One More," Papa Biggy has been spreading messages of love since launching his career back in the 1980's. “Biggy is an artiste I have had a deep respect for. He is different in that his songs speaks about truths and rights and upliftment and he has a passion for social change,” Napoleon White, of Tommy Promotions said. The singer born Courtney Porteous was ecstatic when he got the news that he would be honored. "I am very touched by the recognition. I give God thanks" he said. The DJ said the award comes at a very important time in his career. "I have always had a passion for change and to see my people living in love. To see them put away the foolishness and unite. It breaks my heart to see how as a people we have become so vile which is why I am pushing songs that can bring about a different mindset. If every artiste makes this their moral responsibility then I believe things can turn around,” he shared. Speaking of a mindset, Papa Biggy revealed that he has undergone one in his own life as he has now embraced Christ as his Lord and Saviour. “I have been through so much in my life. My fans don’t even know half of the challenges I have had to deal with. In that moment when you feel physical strength sapping, it is great to know you have someone you can turn to who can replenish and strengthen you" he said of his new found faith. From his early days Biggy has had a healthy respect for God, but never commit until now. It is for that reason he has never recorded x-rated songs. “I think there is a call on my life to share God’s love, but for now I am going to new convert classes and

The Christian drama "I Can Only Imagine" blew away expectations to open with $17.1 million. It's about the singer who wrote one of the most popular songs in Christian music. The gay teen romance "Love, Simon" debuted with $11.5 million.

TAX GUIDE

Don’t Overpay Your Taxes IRS.GOV hese often-overlooked tax breaks could potentially save you hundreds – maybe even thousands – of dollars if you itemize deductions. To start, get to know the difference between tax credits and tax deductions. Tax credits reduce the amount you owe in taxes. In some circumstances, tax credits allow a refundable credit, meaning you may not only reduce the amount you owe to $0, but you can also get money back. Deductions, on the other hand, simply reduce your taxable income. Both can have a potentially significant impact on your taxes and are often worth the extra effort to include on your return. Some commonly overlooked credits include:

you won’t this year; one-third of the EITC-eligible population changes each year based on marital, parental and financial status.

T

1. Child and Dependent Care Credit You can claim a credit of up to $2,100 for day care for your dependents so you and your

spouse can work. Qualifying dependents include children under 13 and parents who are no longer able to care for themselves.

2. Earned Income Tax Credit The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a federal tax credit based on your income and the number of qualifying children

living with you. Nearly 1 in 5 people who qualify fail to claim the credit, worth up to $6,318. Just because you didn’t qualify last year doesn’t mean

3. Saver’s Credit or the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit Make sure you “pay yourself first.” Even if it is only $20 each pay cycle, make sure you are putting some money into a retirement fund. If your company offers a retirement savings plan, like a 401(k), it is usually in your best interest to participate. If your income is lower than $60,000, you can receive a credit of up to $1,000 for a contribution of up to $2,000 into an IRA or an employer-provided retirement account, such as a 401(k). The credit is in addition to any deduction or exclusion from income for the contribution. -irs.gov

BLESSINGS 5 Ways to Celebrate New Life and Fresh Beginnings By Jeanne Harrison lovingmylot.com hen I was a teenager I worked at a local gym. In the back office there was a big sign on the wall that said “Choose Your Attitude!” in bright, happy letters. Admittedly, it was much easier to choose a positive attitude when I was clocking out to go home rather than clocking in to wipe sweat off plastic seats for five hours. This spring, I don’t know the particulars of your season in life. I don’t know whether you’re “clocking in” to a world of discouragement and anxiety or “clocking out” to sweet rest and new adventures. But I do know this: You still get to choose your attitude. It was true when I was fifteen, and it’s true now. Spring is a season of new life and fresh beginnings, and that’s always worth celebrating! Here are five ideas for celebrating spring regardless of your season in life.

mind!). Do some investigating—ask Christian friends what one nonfiction book changed their life. Then read it this spring.

W

1. Make a list of three new things God is doing in your life, and thank Him for them. Think about big or small life changes, opportunities, and new truths God is teaching you. They can be positive, painful, or both. Make your list, then consider how these changes allow you to experience God. Thank Him by faith for His fresh work in your life, regardless of how you feel. First Thessalonians 5:16-18 urges believers, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 2. Study a passage of Scripture about “newness.” Here are three of my favorites: “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert” (Isa. 43:18-19). Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come (2 Cor. 5:17).

“I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh” (Ezek. 36:26). Which one is your favorite? Look it up in the Bible, and read it in context. If you have a commentary, see what theologians have to say about that passage. Meditate on what it teaches you about God and yourself. Want to take it one step further? Dig into Kelly Minter’s Bible Study on 2 Corinthians, All Things New. 3. Choose one of the passages above and reflect it creatively. Paint those beautiful words, if you’re artsy. Make a faux watercolor print using your computer if you’re not! If you’ve got a little Joanna Gaines in you, use the passage as inspiration to decorate a mantle or a shelf. Write a song or poem about it. You know all the hype about adult coloring books? There’s truth to the fact that using the right side of our brain reduces stress. Why not encounter God in the creative corners of your personality? There are so many ways to worship Him! 4. Learn one new thing about God through reading a nonfiction Christian book. This spring I am learning about Union with Christ from Rankin Wilbourne’s new book. Does that sound a little boring to you? It’s okay, it did to me, too. But guess what? As a recovering fiction-only addict,

it’s actually a feast for my soul! I just had to rustle up the discipline to crack open the cover. What’s one new thing you want to explore about God? How to live boldly for Him? Try Radical by David Platt or Not a Fan by Kyle Idleman. Do you want to understand His purpose for marriage? One of my favorite books is The Meaning of Marriage by Tim Keller. Or you could read another Keller book like Walking with God through Pain and Suffering or The Prodigal God (this book blew my self-righteous little

5. Bless someone else with a spring surprise. Paul once told the Ephesian elders, “In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive’” (Acts 20:35). Paul was describing an “outward-focused” lifestyle dedicated to evangelism and discipleship. What is one simple way you can enjoy the blessing of giving rather than receiving? Instead of buying that cute spring necklace for yourself, why not buy it for a friend who’s been having a hard time lately? Or if you’re a mom of small children, plan a spring surprise for your kids—decorating cookies, making a craft, or a picnic at the park. Cultivating an outward-focused heart doesn’t have to be complicated. Start small this spring.

NEW JERSEY Doctor’s orders: Aretha Franklin cancels two concerts

retha Franklin is canceling an upcoming NJ concert on doctor’s or-

ders. The Queen of Soul’s management team said Friday that Franklin will not perform March 25 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, New Jersey. That show would have taken place on her 76th birthday. Franklin’s representatives say the singer has been ordered by her doctor to stay off the road and rest completely for at least the next two months. It adds that she is “extremely disappointed she cannot perform as she had expected and hoped to.” Last year, Franklin announced her plans to retire, saying she would perform at “some select things.” ———————

Bergen county NJ taxpayers face no increase HACKENSACK: ergen County Executive Jim Tedesco has put together a county budget for 2018 that increases spending but doesn’t raise taxes, and instead relies on government raising more money through fees rather than hiking property taxes. Tedesco unveiled the $530.8 million spending package to the Freeholder Board on Wednesday afternoon. The proposed budget raises overall spending by $10.8 million, but leaves the tax levy at $411,689,646 — and thus no change to the tax rate. ——————

Paterson NJ passes 90 days without a homicide PATERSON: he city has gone more than 90 days without a homicide, which is the longest lull in fatal violence in more than nine years, according to law enforcement officials. Paterson also has seen a drop in the number of non-fatal shootings in recent months, according to statistics compiled by Paterson Press. Meanwhile, other large cities in New Jersey — including Newark, Camden and Trenton — have reported increases in homicides at the start of 2018 compared to the same time period last year. Political figures, pastors and community leaders attribute the lull to several factors, including a ban on liquor sales after 10 p.m., an anti-crime program targeting chronic offenders, residents’ willingness to alert authorities to wrongdoing and the hiring of additional police officers. “It’s been quiet,” said Sylvia Farrar, part of Paterson’s Cease-Fire anti-crime community group. “That’s a beautiful thing, praise God.”

Nine indicted on drug charges PATERSON, N.J: ine members of a Paterson-based major cocaine supply network were indicted following a joint investigation that involved the Passaic County Sheriff's Office and State Police, authorities said Tuesday. Investigators seized nearly 18 pounds of cocaine, a small quantity of heroin, 82 pills containing fentanyl, three handguns and more than $76,000 in drug proceeds during what was called “Operation Stillwater,” Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said. The top suppliers in the network are all from Paterson, New Jersey's third-largest city, Grewal said: Jose Encarnacion, 35, was the primary supplier, buying the cocaine in New York City and then providing it to his associates; Jose Encarnacion, Adrian Mena-Acevedo, 25, "obtained large quantities of cocaine from Encarnacion [that] he distributed to other suppliers in the network; Luis Peguero-Nin, 27, did the same as Mena-Acevedo. Peguero-Nin, a purported member of the Trinitarios, or 3NI, street gang, supplied cocaine to another alleged Trinitario, Jeffrey Jaquez, 27, of Passaic, who, in turn, employed street-level dealers. "Rather than just locking up streetlevel dealers or low-level members of this network, we cut deep into the supply line, which is the best way to stop the flow of these destructive drugs into our communities," Grewal said. "We also seized evidence that defendants were dealing heroin and the deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl,” he added. “The guns that were seized in this investigation and the alleged gang affiliations that were uncovered further illustrate the danger posed to the Paterson community by

Also named in the indictment were Mena-Acevedo's live-in girlfriend, Emily Aracena-Freijomil, 24, and Juan Duran, 23, both of Paterson. They cut, packaged and sold the drug under his direction, the indictment charges. The indictment also charges two defendants with working for Peguero-Nin: Chamil Polanco, 24 also of Paterson, and a second man known by the nickname “Gingo” who remains unidentified.

The trio cut and packaged the cocaine for sale at an apartment they shared on Pearl Street, Grewal said. Investigators executing a search warrant there last December seized three handguns, an illegal large-capacity magazine, hollow-point bullets, other ammunition, a small quantity of cocaine, 82 pills containing fentanyl and heroin in various stages of packaging, the attorney general said. The final defendant, 37-year-old Juan Ruiz-Montano of the Bronx, worked with Encarnacion to distribute the cocaine, Grewal said.

Can I achieve success with a drug problem? Dear Devine Diva: am a 22-year old young man who is writing from Riker’s Island, in my jail cell. None of my crimes were violent. They mainly consisted of theft and drugs. I've had a drug problem every since my best friend overdosed. I did drugs before then, but not as much as afterwards. One thing lead to another, and soon I found myself behind the wheel of other people's cars and using other people's credit cards. I have been locked up for five months now and looking back, I can't believe the life I was living. Is there still a chance I can turn my life into a success when I'm released? And what can I do to stay clean and sober when I am released? -Signed Locked-Up

How Shacking Up Before Marriage Affects a Relationship's Success By Belinda Luscombe ust as nobody buys a car without taking it for a test drive, most people—about two thirds of couples—don’t get married any more until they’ve lived with their proposed lifetime partner. This has been true for a while, even though studies done right up until the 2000s showed that couples who lived together first actually got divorced more often than those who didn’t. But a spate of new studies looking at cohabitation, as it’s called, are starting to refine those results. A paper in the April issue of the Journal of Marriage and Family, but presented early to the Council on Contemporary Families says that past studies have overstated the risk of divorce for cohabiting couples. Arielle Kuperberg, assistant professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, says that the important characteristic is not whether people lived together first, but how old they were when they decided to share a front door. “It turns out that cohabitation doesn’t cause divorce and probably never did,” says Kuperberg. “What leads to divorce is when people move in with someone with or without a marriage license – before they have the maturity and experience to choose compatible partners and to conduct themselves in ways that can sustain a long-term relationship.” So what’s the magic age? Kuperberg says it’s unwise to either move in or get married before the age of 23. But other family experts say that’s lowballing it. Economist Evelyn Lehrer (University of Illinois-Chicago) says the longer people wait past 23, the more likely a marriage is to stick. In fact, Lehrer’s analysis of longitudinal data shows that for every year a woman waits to get married, right up until her early 30s, she reduces her chances of divorce. It’s possible that woman may also be reducing her chances of marriage, but Lehrer’s research suggests later marriages, while less conventional, and may be more robust. One of the reasons cohabitation was linked with divorce in prior years was that poorer people tended to move in together and then slide into marriage when they got pregnant. But their economic plight did not improve. So it might not have been the cohabitation, but the poverty that was causing the split. Wealthier people tended to wait.

J

Dear Locked-Up: ou can still achieve success, but it will be harder. The first thing you must do is recognize that your situation had less to do with luck than a series of poor choices. Now that you are sober and thinking straight, it's time to start planning a different life when you are released. Some positive steps to take is to start by joining a 12 step program (support group) people with problems who have emotional support accomplish more than they can on their own.

Also know that you will have to forgo relationships with people who use drugs and steal. Try to learn a skill or trade while doing your time. It won’t be easy, but if you do all of the above, you'll no longer be the same person you are today, and you will lead a happier life with fewer problems. ————————————————-

5 Simple Steps to Protect Your PC from Hackers

here are numerous ways to protect and remove malware from our computers. No one method is enough to ensure your computer is secure. The more layers of defense, the harder for hackers to use your computer. Here are five simple, but critical steps to protect your computer, • Install Firewall • Install Antivirus Software • Install Anti-Spyware Software • Use Complex and Secure Passwords • Check on the Security Settings of the Browser • Install Firewall A firewall enacts the role of a security guard. There are of two types of firewalls: a software firewall and hardware firewall. Each serves similar, but different purposes. A firewall is the first step to provide security to the computer. It creates a barrier between the computer and any unauthorized program trying to come in through the Internet. If you are using a system at home, turn on the firewall permanently. It makes you aware if there are any unauthorized efforts to use your system. Install Antivirus Software: Antivirus is one other means to protect the computer. It is software that helps to protect the computer from any unauthorized code or software that creates a threat to the system. Unauthorized software includes viruses, keyloggers, trojans etc. This might slow down the processing speed of your com-

puter, delete important files and access personal information. Even if your system is virus free, you must install an antivirus software to prevent the system from further attack of virus. Antivirus software plays a major role in real time protection, its added advantage of detecting threats helps computer and the information in it to be safe. Some advanced antivirus programs provide automatic updates, this further helps to protect the PC from newly created viruses. Antivirus for Windows 8 software may include advanced features such as email protection, blocking of pop-ups and identity theft. Install Anti-Spyware Software: spySpyware is a software program that collects personal information or information about an organization without their approval. This information is redirected to a third party website. Spyware are designed in such a way that they are not easy to be removed.

Anti-Spyware software is solely dedicated to combat spyware. Similar to antivirus soft-

ware, anti-spyware software offers real time protection. It scans all the incoming information and helps in blocking the threat once detected. Comodo Free Antivirus comes with spyware protection built in. Use Complex and Secure Passwords: The first line of defence in maintaining system security is to have strong and complex passwords. Complex passwords are difficult for the hackers to find. Use a password that is at least 8 characters in length and include a combination of numbers, letters

that are both upper and lower case and a special character. Hackers use certain tools to break easy passwords in few minutes. One recent study showed that a 6 character password with all lower case letters can be broken in under 6 minutes! Check on the Security Settings of the Browser: Browsers have various security and privacy settings that you should review and set to the level you desire. Recent browsers give you ability to tell web sites to not track your movements, increasing your privacy and security.

The Quick Tips to read the Nutrition Facts label 1. Start with the Serving Size •We need to look for both the serving size and the number of servings in the package. •Compare the portion size to the serving size listed on the panel. If the serving size is one cup then we eat two cups, we are consuming twice the calories, fat and other nutrients. 2. Check out the Total Calories • Find out how many calories are in one serving. It's good idea to cut back on calories if we are watching your weight. 3. Let the Percent Daily Values Be our Guide We need to use percent Daily Values (DV) to evaluate how much food fits into our daily meal plan. • Daily Values are average levels of nutrients about 2,000 calories a day. A food with a 5 percent DV of fat provides 5 percent of the total fat. Percent DV means for the entire day, not just one meal( such as breakfast, lunch and dinner) or snack. •Some may need more or less than 2,000 calories per day. The amount of calories we should eat every day depends on our age, height, gender, daily activity level, and whether we want to lose, maintain, or gain weight. • For some nutrients may need more or less than 100 percent DV. 4) The High and Low of Daily Values • Low is 5 percent or less in saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol and sodium. •High is 20 percent or more in vitamins, minerals and fiber. 6) Limit Saturated Fat, Added Sugars and Sodium Consuming less saturated fat, sugars and sodium may help to reduce the risk of having chronic disease. • Saturated fat and trans fat increase risk of heart disease. • Consuming added sugar makes it difficult to meet nutrient needs within the calorie requirement.

•High levels of sodium may develop high blood pressure. •Need to look for low percentage DV of these kinds of nutrients. 7) Look for Enough Vitamins, Minerals and Fiber •Add more fiber, potassium, vitamin D, calcium may help to reduce your risk of certain health conditions such as osteoporosis and anemia. •Consume more fruits and vegetables for more of these nutrients. • Need to look high for percentage DV of these kinds of nutrients. 8) Additional Nutrients It is also important to know about the additional nutrients on the Nutrition Facts label. • Protein A percentage Daily Value of protein is not mandatory to be listed on the label. We need to look for moderate portions of lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, low-fat milk, yogurt and cheese. Carbohydrates The three types of carbohydrates are sugars, starches and fiber. We need to eat whole-grain breads, cereals, rice and pasta as well as fruits and vegetables. • Sugars Simple carbohydrates, or sugars, are naturally present fruit juice (fructose) and milk (lactose) or refined sources such as table sugar (sucrose) or corn syrup. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends consuming less than 10 % of daily calories from added sugars. Check the Ingredient List Foods with more than one ingredient need to be listed on the label in descending order by weight. The largest amounts are listed first. This information may be helpful to individuals with food allergies, those who need to avoid pork or shellfish.

BUSINESS HYPE Highlighting the opportunities and challenges of local business

Business Workshop: Kenneth C. Plummer, Managing Partner of Foreward Thinkers Facilities (7th l) and Natasha Roukos, CoChair of SCORE Westchester (5th l) pose with local business operators at a marketing training workshop held recently at the Roosevelt Square Professional Building, 11 West Prospect Avenue, Mount Vernon.

Should You Start a Business From Home?

S

tarting a business from home has become increasingly popular. Most homes now have broadband Internet, many businesses operate solely online and you can hire “virtual employees” without ever meeting them in person. But is starting a business from home right for you? Here are seven questions to help you decide if starting a business from home is right for you: 1. Do I need to meet with clients and customers? If you are running a B2B business such as consulting, website designing or accounting, for example, you can probably do most of your work from home. When you need to meet with clients and customers, you have a few options. You can meet with them at their place of business or a coffee shop like Starbucks, if appropriate. You can rent a temporary meeting or office space through services such as Regus, ShareDesk or PivotDesk. Or you can meet with them at your home if your home office is suitable (see next question). 2. What type of workspace is available to me at home? The amount of available space and your business needs will dictate whether you can start your business from home. If all you have is a corner of your dining room table, but you need to manufacture, store and package a large quantity of products, for example, you probably can’t work at home. If you want to meet with clients in your home, you’ll need either a separate office (such as a backyard guest house, converted garage or mother-in-law apartment) or a room in your house with a separate entrance so customers don’t have to traipse through your home.

3. Do I need to hire employees? If your business requires employees to be on premises, a home-based location probably isn’t right for you. Having employees in your personal space can get awkward for all involved. For potential employees, a home-based address may convey the image that you’re not serious about your business, or that your company won’t offer the same opportunities for advancement that a “real” business would. On the other hand, if you will operate with remote employees, freelancers or contractors, running your business from home can be the perfect setup. When you do need to meet with them, use online meeting tools like GoToMeeting, JoinMe or Skype. 4. Is the area where I live zoned for business use? Cities and municipalities want to ensure home-based businesses don’t negatively affect quality of life. Common problems include businesses that generate noise or smells, take up a lot of street parking (for example, due to visiting customers or employees) or increase traffic in the neighborhood (due to frequent deliveries). Always check with your city before setting up a homebased office. 5. How will working at home affect my personal life? Some business owners find that working at home offers the best of both worlds when it comes to work-life balance. Others find it hard to stop working when their business is always at hand, and their work-life balance actually suffers. If you have family members at home, discuss how the business will affect them and address their concerns. Without their support, it will be hard to make a home-based business work.

Don’t Fall Victim to Financial Distress Caused by Credit Card Debt Credit counseling is the easiest, most effective way to explore the options for credit card debt and identify the best solution for your needs. HIGH MONTHLY CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS combined with even higher interest rates can make it almost impossible to maintain control over your credit card debt. Even with your monthly payments you may not see much of a reduction in debt no matter what you do.

What’s more, as your credit card balances increase, it can also cause problems for your budget – you end up juggling bills, choosing between expenses, and putting off important purchases. Luckily, there’s a way you can find the solution that works for your unique financial situation – and even better, it won’t cost a thing to get the information you need. CREDIT COUNSELING IS THE EASIEST, MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO EXPLORE THE OPTIONS FOR CREDIT CARD DEBT AND IDENTIFY THE BEST SOLUTION FOR YOUR NEEDS. Speak with a certified

credit counselor at no charge to analyze your debt and budget. They will review your options to see what solutions may work best for you. Your credit counselor may be able to lower high interest rates or even eliminate them while consolidating your credit card debts into one easy payment through a debt management program. Get Out of Debt Faster As a result of those lower interest rates – more of your monthly payments go toward your debt instead of adding more interest – which means you can get out of debt faster. Every financial situation is different, but most people see their total monthly debt payments reduced by up to 30 to 50 percent as they get out of debt faster. The program is usually completed in around 40-60 payments, so you can be debt-free in just a few years instead of taking decades to eliminate everything you owe. Build a Positive Credit History Additionally, consolidating debtthrough a certified credit counseling service may help save your credit score from additional damage. You stop future penalties and prevent further damage from missed payments and overdrawn credit lines. Even better, as you

(Fees may apply for voluntary participation in debt management - all counseling services are free.)

work your way through the program, you’re able to build a positive credit history while reducing your overall debt level. As a result, some people see their credit score even increase over the course of their time with a credit counseling service.

It’s the fastest and easiest way to get professional financial advice without adding more debt to do so. FREEDOM FROM DEBT IS POSSIBLE! Don’t spend another sleepless night worrying about your debt problems, or another day stressed about your bills instead of focused on your family and life. Call Consolidated Credit now at
