EDITORIAL V
The Celebration of ‘Love’ on Valentine’s Day
alentine’s Day in the Western world is known as the day when lovers express their affection through gifts and messages. Even though it is not a public holiday, it is celebrated with such hype that causes many who are single to feel left out of the lovefest. I often see people go out of their way to buy something expensive for their significant other because the fear of not doing so might end the relationship or create a wedge between the two. Some do not necessarily buy a gift, but put on a whole production to seduce their lover into falling for them all over again. Then there are others who take the opportunity to seek out a lover even for the day just to feel a sense of being loved. Others use the day to rekindle a love that is dying. I am sure there are many other ways in which Valentine’s Day unite or divide lovers. However, it makes me question the type of “Love” we are actually celebrating on Valentine’s Day. This led me to dig a bit deeper into the foundation on which this holiday was built. And its origins are dark! According to National Public Radio (NPR), “from February 13th to the 15th, the Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia. The men sacrificed a goat and a dog, then whipped women with the hides of the animals they had just slain. The Roman romantics were drunk. They were naked,’ says Noel Lenski, a historian at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Young women would actually lineup for the men to hit them, Lenski says. They believed this would make them fertile.” It was a brutal fete, included a matchmaking lottery in which young men drew the names of women from a jar. The couple would then be coupled up for the duration of the festival or longer if the match was right. Also, on a separate note, Emperor Claudius II executed two men both named Valentine on February 14th of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine's Day.” In other words, Valentine’s Day was built on a foundation of murder and a ritual that has nothing to do with actual love. I know we are living in a different time and we have given Valentine’s Day a new norm. But what is a house if the foundation on
By Solemn_Vow editor@streethype.net which it sits is shaky or questionable? The women back in the Roman era would allow men to literally hit them so that they would become fertile. Fast forward to today, some women push, encourage or influence their men to buy them gifts so they can feel loved or to show the world that someone loves them. Both rituals may not look the same, but there are similarities. Conversely, what if real love is loving someone else unconditionally and expecting nothing in return. Celebrating love is a beautiful thing and we should celebrate it, but in way where it creates more love than conflict. It should not be a day when people expect someone to buy them gifts or to prove to them that their lover loves them -- especially by showering them with gifts that are temporary. It should be a day when we try to outdo the next person by demonstrating how loving we can be to everyone, not just to our significant others. In essence, this display of love should be an everyday expression to everyone who cross our paths. We should decide to show others love through our kindness, gentleness, and compassion because real love is a decision, not a feeling. It is loving someone without the expectation of a reward from the person we are loving. Nevertheless, go ahead: buy your gifts! But consider the real reasons you are doing it. Is it a real expression of your love?

Mount Vernon, a mere 22-minute train ride to midtown Manhattan, with access to mass transit, downtown retail, and a diverse population possesses all these qualities as well, with the added benefit of a business-friendly climate with zero to very low taxes for corporations. I am confident our city can outcompete any similar urban area and give Amazon what it’s looking for. As such, we have resubmitted our offer to be the home of Amazon’s second world headquarters.” Amazon says no to NYC The full proposal to Amazon can be seen at www.cmvny.com/amazonchoosemv. After months of criticism from elected officials in New York unhappy about the incentives offered to Amazon to establish a new campus in Queens, the online retail giant announced Thursday it is scrapping its plans. In recent days, officials across the country—from nearby locations like Newark and Connecticut to Chicago—have publicly suggested the company should instead pivot to their areas. But Amazon attempted to tamp down those efforts Thursday, saying in its statement that the company does not "intend to re-open the HQ2 search at this time."

What is Social Security Disability Insurance?
S
ocial Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a federally run benefits program that provides aid to people who are unable to achieve gainful employment due to a permanent disabling condition. SSDI is financed by the Social Security tax. Therefore, any person that qualifies as disabled according to the definition provided by Social Security Administration (SSA), and who has paid Social Security taxes long enough to achieve sufficient work credits, can qualify for SSDI. Do You Qualify for SSDI? In order to qualify for SSDI, you must suffer from a permanent condition that prevents you from working. In other words, your disability must have lasted, or be expected to last, a minimum of twelve months and you must be unable to earn an income greater than $1,220 per month (prior to 2019, this standard allowable level of Substantial Gainful Activity was only $1,180 per month). In addition, an individual must have earned sufficient work credits in order to qualify for SSDI. The normal requirement is a total of 40 credits, 20 of which must have been earned in the 10 years prior to the onset of disability. Usually, this means that a person must have a fairly consistent work history and have worked (and paid Social Security taxes) for a combined five of the ten years prior to becoming disabled. These work requirements can be somewhat less for younger individuals, as parents’ work credits can be applied to applicants under the age of 22.
Should I Get Representation? Millions of Americans apply for Social Security disability benefits every year. Due to the limited resources of the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the extreme volume of applications processed, more than 60% of initial stage applications are currently denied. In the reconsideration stage of appeal, the number jumps to well over 80%. Given those odds, having a qualified Social Security attorney or advocate help you to efficiently and correctly handle your application and the potential appeals process can be extremely beneficial. Having representation will help you to know and understand your options in the case of a denial. In addition, an experienced lawyer or advocate can help to organize paperwork and medical records, prepare you or your witnesses for hearing, and will likely have a vast amount of previous experience dealing with SSA offices and judges in your area. Having the experience of a qualified Social Security representative can prove invaluable in getting you the benefits that you deserve. If you are disabled and feel that you are entitled to benefits under Social Security Disability Insurance, please contact us. ———————————————————————

CARIBBEAN NEWS Jamaican farmers to benefit from marijuana industry KINGSTON, Jamaica: rime Minister Andrew Holness says that the Alternative Development Programme (ADP), which will provide an avenue for small farmers to benefit from the marijuana industry, will start by March. The programme is intended to prevent and eliminate the illicit cultivation of marijuana and channel the process through legal system. The pilot, which will begin in Accompong, St. Elizabeth, south west of here and Orange Hill in We s t m o r e land, west of the capital, will involve the farming of marijuana to provide raw material for processors. “It is a real fear that as that (marijuana) industry emerges to become more corporatised, that the original ganja man, the original farmer, could very well be left out of the gains and the benefits, when you were the ones singing the praises and the benefits from how long,” Holness said. “So this programme is of significant importance to ensure that small farmers, and, in fact, communities like Accompong, where there is certain discipline, a certain order, a certain social system that will ensure that it is not used in illicit ways, will benefit,” he added. Speaking at a ceremony in commemoration of the 281 anniversary of the peace treaty signed by the Accompong Maroons with the British and to commemorate the birthday of legendary leader Cudjoe, Holness said he has received the commitment of the Minister of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries, Audley Shaw, that the programme will begin within the first quarter of this year. “I know that you have actually started your part of the programme, but you are now awaiting the Government’s part of the programme to commence. I had a word with him (Shaw) and he gave me a commitment that the Alternative Development Programme for the small ganja farmers to produce for the legal trade will start,” he said. The 1998 Action Plan, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, provides for the inclusion of a programme, such as the ADP, through specifically designed rural development measures consistent with sustained national economic growth.

Haiti president breaks silence after week of violent unrest PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti: aitian President Jovenel Moise broke his silence after a week of violent protests demanding his resignation as the US announced it was pulling "non-emergency personnel" from the country over the deadly unrest. "I will not leave the country in the hands of armed gangs and drug traffickers," Moise said in a pre-recorded address broadcast on state television, speaking in Creole in the aftermath of clashes between authorities and demonstrators in the capital Port-au-Prince. Since February 7, at least seven people have died as Haiti has been plunged into political crisis, with everyday life paralyzed by protests and barricades in the largest towns. The protesters, angered about skyrocketing inflation and the alleged theft of nearly US$2 billion in Venezuelan oil relief to the island, are demanding Moise's resignation. Meanwhile, the United States announced it was removing "non-emergency personnel" from the country on Thursday, the same day that Canada said it was temporarily shuttering its embassy. "There are currently widespread, violent, and unpredictable demonstrations in Port-au-

US Pledge $100 M to aid in the Venezuela crisis CARACAS, Venezuela: wenty-five countries have pledged US$100 million in aid to Venezuela, a top US official said Thursday, as the crisis-hit country's Supreme Court took aim at oil executives appointed by the opposition. Venezuela is plagued by hyperinflation and major shortages of basic goods, and two men— opposition leader Juan Guaido and President Nicolas Maduro are vying for control of the country. The United States is among more than 50 countries that have recognized Guaido as interim president, but Maduro backed by the country's military as well as Russia, China and dozens of other states has so far refused to relinquish his office. US national security advisor John Bolton made the announcement on the aid pledged to Venezuela following an Organization of American States conference on assisting the country. According to David Smolanksy, coordinator of an OAS working group on migration and refugees from Venezuela, the money will go directly to aid collection centers set up on the borders with Colombia and Brazil and on the Caribbean island of Curacao. —————————

Councilman pay’s being garnished for defaulting on $140,000 loan PATERSON, NJ ouncilman Michael Jackson’s paycheck is being garnished for defaulting on a $140,000 business loan. Jackson’s lender, the Paterson Restoration Corporation (PRC), obtained a court order in late December to collect on the defaulted loan. 10-percent of his gross weekly wage has to be withheld to pay back the loan. Jackson earns $41,213 as a councilman, according to payroll records. Jackson declined to comment on Friday. The Paterson Restoration Corporation gave him the loan $140,000 loan at 2.25-percent interest in 2009 to renovate his restaurant, Jacksonville, on Grand Street.

that the Great Recession battered his business causing him to default on the loan. At times, he has blamed the Paterson Restoration Corporation, an agency created by the municipal government in 1977 with $11.1 million in federal funds to give out loans to small businesses, by stating he was promised funds in matter of weeks, but took months before he could get his hands on the dollars. New Jersey clergy accused of sexual abuse named NEWARK atholic Church officials in New Jersey have named nearly 200 priests credibly accused of sexual abuse. Each of the five Catholic dioceses in the state released their own lists of names, totaling 189 in all. The lists include parishes where each priest worked, if they had more than one accuser and if the priest has either been removed from their ministry or is now deceased. Cardinal Joseph Tobin released a video statement following the release of the names. “Victims, their families and the faithful are rightfully outraged over the abuses perpetrated against minors,” Tobin said. Tobin also said, “Anyone aware of suspected sexual misconduct by any cleric, employee, or volunteer of the Archdiocese [should] report it immediately to law enforcement and to the Archdiocesan Victim Assistance Coordinator: 201-407-3256.” The names of New Jersey priests accused of sexual abuse are also available at http://newjersey.news12.com Some victims’ advocates say that they remain skeptical that things will change. Bob Hoatson says that he believes more victims may now come forward.

TAX GUIDE
How to choose a Tax Return Preparer
Courtesy of IRS f you choose to have someone prepare your tax return, choose that preparer wisely. A paid tax return preparer is primarily responsible for the overall substantive accuracy of your return and by law, is required to sign the return and include their preparer tax identification number (PTIN) on it. Although the tax return preparer always signs the return, you're ultimately responsible for the accuracy of every item reported on your return. Anyone paid to prepare tax returns for others should have a thorough understanding of tax matters and is required to have a PTIN. You may want to ask friends, co-workers, or your employer for help in selecting a competent tax return preparer. Choose a tax return preparer you'll be able to contact in case the IRS examines your return and has questions regarding how your return was prepared. You can designate your paid tax return preparer or another third party to speak to the IRS concerning the preparation of your return, payment/refund issues, and mathematical errors. The third-party authorization checkbox on IRS tax forms gives the designated party the authority to receive and inspect returns and return information for one year from the original due date of your return (without regard to extensions).
I
Steps You Should Take to Find a Tax Return Preparer Most tax return preparers are professional, honest, and provide excellent service to their clients. However, dishonest and unscrupulous tax return preparers who file false income tax returns do exist.
Check the IRS how to Make a Complaint if you have been financially impacted by a tax return preparer's misconduct or improper tax preparation practices. You should always check your return for errors to avoid potential financial and legal problems.
The following points will assist you when selecting a tax return preparer: • Be wary of tax return preparers who claim they can obtain larger refunds than others can. • Avoid tax return preparers who base their fees on a percentage of the refund or who offer to deposit all or part of your refund into their financial accounts. • Ensure you use a preparer with a PTIN. Paid tax return preparers must have a PTIN to prepare all or substantially all of a tax return. • Use a reputable tax professional who enters their PTIN on the tax return, signs the tax return, and provides you a copy of the return (as required). • Consider whether the individual or firm will be around for months or years after filing the return to answer questions about the preparation of the tax return. • Never sign a blank tax form. • Check the person's credentials. Only attorneys, CPAs, and enrolled agents can represent taxpayers before the IRS in all matters, including audits, collections, and appeals. • Other tax return preparers who participate in the IRS Annual Filing Season Program have limited practice rights to represent taxpayers for audits of returns they prepared and signed.
FOOD
Foods to Avoid When Trying to Lose Weight T
he foods you eat can have a major effect on your weight. Some foods, like full-fat yogurt, coconut oil and eggs, help with weight loss. Other foods, especially processed and refined products, can make you gain weight. Here are 11 foods to avoid when you're trying to lose weight. 1. French Fries and Potato Chips Whole potatoes are healthy and filling, but french fries and potato chips are not. They are very high in calories, and it's easy to eat way too many of them. In observational studies, consuming French fries and potato chips has been linked to weight gain. One study even found that potato chips may contribute to more weight gain per serving than any other food. What's more, baked, roasted or fried potatoes may contain cancer-causing substances called acrylamides. Therefore, it's best to eat plain, boiled potatoes. French fries and potato chips are unhealthy and fattening. On the other hand, whole, boiled potatoes are very healthy and help fill you up. 2. Sugary Drinks Sugar-sweetened beverages, like soda, are one of the unhealthiest foods on the planet. They are strongly associated with weight gain and can have disastrous health effects when consumed in excess. Even though sugary drinks contain a lot of calories, your brain doesn't register them like solid food. Liquid sugar calories don't make you feel full, and you won't eat less food to compensate. Instead, you end up adding these calories on top of your normal intake.
If you are serious about losing weight, consider giving up sugary drinks completely. Sugary drinks can negatively affect your weight and general health. If weight loss is your goal, then giving up soda and similar drinks may have a big impact. 3. White Bread White bread is highly refined and often contains a lot of added sugar. It is high on the glycemic index and can spike your blood sugar levels. One study of 9,267 people found that eating two slices (120 grams) of white bread per day was linked to a 40% greater risk of weight gain and obesity (14). Fortunately, there are many healthy alternatives to conventional wheat bread. One is Ezekiel bread, which is probably the healthiest bread on the market. However, keep in mind that all wheat breads do contain gluten. Some other options include oopsie bread, cornbread and almond flour bread. 4. Candy Bars Candy bars are extremely unhealthy. They pack a lot of added sugar, added oils and refined flour into a small package. Candy bars are high in calories and low in nutrients. An average-sized candy bar covered in chocolate can contain around 200–300 calories, and extra-large bars may contain even more. Unfortunately, you can find candy bars everywhere. They are even strategically placed in stores in order to tempt consumers into buying them impulsively. If you are craving a snack, eat a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts instead.
5. Most Fruit Juices Most fruit juices you find at the supermarket have very little in common with whole fruit. Fruit juices are highly processed and loaded with sugar. In fact, they can contain just as much sugar and calories as soda, if not more. Also, fruit juice usually has no fiber and doesn't require chewing. This means that a glass of orange juice won't have the same effects on fullness as an orange, making it easy to consume large quantities
in a short amount of time. Stay away from fruit juice and eat whole fruit instead. Fruit juice is high in calories and added sugar, but usually contains no fiber. It is best to stick to whole fruit. 6. Pastries, Cookies and Cakes Pastries, cookies and cakes are packed with unhealthy ingredients like added sugar and refined flour. They may also contain artificial trans fats, which are very harmful and linked to many diseases.

RELATIONSHIP
10 Valentine’s Day ideas for couples Is it more important to love or to be loved? ost of us would agree with George Eliot’s words, “I like not only to be loved, but also to be told I am loved.” Valentine’s Day is the occasion when you can experience both. Here are 10 creative ways to tell your spouse, “I love you.” 1. On small pieces of paper, write down every kind of kiss that you can think of (examples: passionate, on the cheek, etc.). Then fill an inexpensive red felt bag with your “kisses” and give it to your spouse. Ask your spouse to pull several pieces of paper from the felt bag, and then give your sweetheart whatever kind of kiss is described. 2. Make a book about why you love your spouse and why you are thankful for him/her. The woman who sent this idea wrote, “He loved it! Said it was the best gift he has ever gotten. And it helped me to focus on the things I love about my husband and not his shortcomings.” 3. Take your sweetie on a scavenger hunt. Ask him/her to answer riddles to find the clues to items that you placed somewhere around town. The last item should give instructions that lead to your Valentine’s Day activities. 4. After enjoying a candlelight dinner for two at home, give your spouse a massage and watch a romantic movie 5. Surprise your spouse with a special getaway together. 6. Give your wife a dozen roses. On each stem attach a note for a future date— to do something that she would enjoy. (For example, “Go to the symphony.”) 7. If possible, go on a date with your spouse to a restaurant that you enjoyed
M
when you first met. After you order your meal, take some time to write down favorite memories from the past year. Then share your lists. 8. Have 11 roses delivered to your wife, and then give her a 12th yourself while reading her a love poem. 9. Fill a large box with helium balloons and special gifts for Valentine’s Day. 10. Create an intimate Valentine’s Day evening at home, without the children. Cooking to soft, romantic music can really be a turn on! While dining, the same soft, romantic music is a wonderful mood-set-
ter. Dinner was followed by just the two of us having the whole dance floor, our den, to ourselves. I won’t say what all this led
to, but it was a truly romantic night that would not have happened at the local restaurant!”
It’s always a big night when you have a little blue pill.
