The color for Breast Cancer Awareness T

he month of October is known as National Breast Cancer awareness month where major breast cancer charities organize campaigns, and events to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.

According to Drexel medicine, “Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. About 1 in 8 US women will develop invasive breast cancer throughout their lifetimes.”

Knowing how life-changing the disease is to women and also men as studies have shown that men do get breast cancer as well. To spread awareness every October, nurses, families, friends, and others who have been affected by the disease whether directly or indirectly would wear the color pink.

According to the Quora website, “wearing pink or wearing the pink ribbon that is also used as a symbol for breast cancer can be explained, in part, by its power as a marketing tool.

Because the color pink is considered feminine in western countries, the ribbon

Buying, wearing, displaying, and sponsoring pink ribbons can signal that a person or business cares about women." This is important to mention because we should support our women especially in the most challenging times in their lives.

In my quest to finding out the significance of wearing pink and the effect, it has on those affected by the disease. A nurse at one of New York City’s hospitals stated that “After I attending the Avon breast cancer walk and seeing everyone wearing pink. It gave me an overwhelming feeling.” She further said that she became overwhelmed with happiness because there was all mixture of survivors, victims and even people that were not affected by the disease who participated in the walk.

Therefore, wearing pink shows support for those affected by cancer and it is a symbol that expresses to those concerned that we are willing to work with the organizations to fight to find a cure.

If you have never walked before, put your name down on the next time a signup sheet is being presented to you because the steps you will take will have a significant impact on the person being told by the doctors that their lives are about to change.

As we move forward, the next time "Breast Cancer awareness month" comes along, let us all wear pink to show that we are willing to stand in line for each other.

Health Department Reports More Measles Cases

T

he Health Department on November 2 is reporting 11 new cases of children with confirmed measles, bringing the total to 17. Communities in Williamsburg and Borough Park are affected.

The children with measles range in age from 7 months to 4 years. Three infections, including the initial case of measles, were acquired by children on a visit to Israel, where a large outbreak of the disease is occurring.

There has also been transmission in schools with children who are unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated. There are no deaths associated with this cluster, although there have been complications including hospitalization. To increase awareness about measles, the Health Department is sending notifications to schools, providers and hospitals with large Orthodox Jewish populations.

The Department is also conducting community outreach in the affected communities, placing ads in local newspapers and distributing posters to health care providers. There has been an increase in vaccination rates in these communities since the Health Department announced the outbreak, but many more children should receive the MMR vaccine to stop measles transmission.

Ending birthright citizenship could put all Americans’ nationality in jeopardy

Birthright citizenship comes from the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which states that “Any person born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, is a citizen of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.”

Although the president falsely claimed that no other country provides birthright citizenship, it is the law in over 30 countries, including Mexico and Canada.

The unexpected announcement sparked fears for many in the immigrant community, including U.S. citizens whose parents are undocumented. It met swift condemnation from all sides of the aisle, with Republicans and Democrats alike questioning the legality.

Legal scholars agreed that the plan is unconstitutional; a president cannot amend the Constitution through executive action.

zenship. Wong, born in San Francisco, had been prevented from re-entering the United States by immigration agents who argued that he was not a citizen because his parents were Chinese. The Supreme Court ruled in his favor, declaring that “citizenship by birth is established by the mere fact of birth under the circumstances defined in the Constitution.” In

other words, as long as you are born in the United States, you are a citizen.

Despite this 100-year-old ruling, some continue to argue that the constitutionality of birthright citizenship is not settled. In a tweet on Wednesday morning, President Trump endorsed a fringe legal theory that the children of undocumented immigrants are not citizens because their parents were not “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States, as required by the Fourteenth Amendment.

However, “[t]o be ‘subject to the jurisdiction’ of the U.S. is simply to be subject to the authority of the U.S. government … [and to be] required to obey U.S. laws,” according to James C. Ho, a judge nominated to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals by President Trump and confirmed in January.

The Supreme Court has largely agreed, suggesting in the 1982 case Plyer v. Doe that there is “no plausible” interpretation of the phrase that excludes undocumented immigrants.

The only people not subject to the jurisdiction of the United States are diplomats and ambassadors, who are entitled to diplomatic immunity and are not required to follow most American laws.

The only way for the president to end birthright citizenship would be to amend the Constitution, which requires a two-thirds majority vote of the House and the Senate, and then for three-fourths states to approve the Amendment.

Eliminating birthright citizenship would create a new permanent underclass in the United States and could even leave some children stateless.

It would also impose hardship on all Americans, who could no longer point to a birth certificate as proof of citizenship. If place of birth no longer guaranteed citizenship, then all Americans—not just those whose parents were undocumented—would be forced to prove their parents’ nationality to the government in order to be recognized as a U.S. citizen. Many Americans would likely be denied citizenship based on government mistakes.

Although President Trump cannot change the Constitution with an executive order, his threat to eliminate birthright citizenship at a highly political moment is not only divisive but fundamentally out of line with America ideals.

During a cultural ceremony held at the Consulate General of Jamaica offices in Manhattan, Consul General Trudy Deans presented awards to the recipients and noted that “the awardees’ voluntary efforts and sacrifices help to better the lives of others in the diaspora and Jamaica.”

The airline which is jointly owned by Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica on Saturday reported a summary of its unaudited financial results, for the nine months ending September 30.

The accounts show earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of positive TT$96 million (One TT dollar =US$0.16 cents).

Former State Senator pleads guilty to two

Homeless Students in New York is Growing MANHATTAN: tudent homelessness continues to rise throughout the city and state, that's according to a new report.

Advocates for Children of New York say there was a 2.7 percent increase of homeless students in city public and charter schools.

There are currently more than 114,000 students that identify as home-

less, that's an estimated one in 10.

Overall, there was a 3.1 percent increase in the state.

The report highlights new initiatives the city is taking to help these students, including yellow bus service for children living in shelters and afterschool reading programs.

The city's Department of Education did not comment on the findings.

Leak at Bronx Housing Concerns Residents BRONX: ronx resident Letisha Clark says for nearly a week, water has been pouring from the pipes in her bathroom.

Water is also dripping behind the walls, collecting on light fixtures and rising through cracks in the floor.

"They need to fix this. I have kids here.

This is a fire hazard. My lights turn off because the water is leaking in between my lights," Clark said.

The leak affects several apartments at the Pelham Parkway Houses in the Bronx.

The bathroom in 3C, for example, looks more like a swimming pool.

Tenants say they've repeatedly complained to the city's housing authority. Iris Rosario says NYCHA is so unresponsive, she's repeatedly used her own money to pay for repairs to her apartment. She is worried the leak will damage everything she's worked for.

"I want to be able to go into my shower, take a shower without being scared that I have to look up before the water comes down on me again. And that's dirty water," Rosario said.

NYCHA told the press on Friday that it is making repairs to the leaking pipes at the Pelham Parkway Houses.

isgraced State Sen. John Sampson, already locked up for obstructing justice and lying to the FBI, will plead guilty to embezzlement charges Friday, according to court filings.

The Brooklyn Democrat, who’s in the middle of a five-year prison sentence, faced the prospect of a second trial after appeals judges granted prosecutors’ request to reinstate two embezzlement charges they said were wrongly tossed before his trial.Sampson won’t face additional prison time under a plea deal, which won’t change his current prison term. But he will have to return $440,000 he stole from foreclosure escrow accounts.

Brooklyn Federal Judge Dora Irizarry initially ruled that Sampson had “completed” the embezzlement in 1998 and 2002, meaning the five-year statute of limitations had already passed when he was indicted in 2013.

A three-judge appeals panel overruled Irizarry, stating Sampson withdrew or transferred $80,000 in stolen escrow money as recently as 2008, within the statute of limitations period.

Former State Sen. John Sampson Sampson, 53, was convicted in 2015 on charges he tried to block a mortgage fraud investigation into a friend who loaned him money and lied to the feds about his secret ownership of a Brooklyn liquor store. He’s due to be released from prison in 2021.

Dominican Sentenced to Prison for Selling Bogus IDs to Illegal Immigrants A

federal judge recently sentenced a Dominican to four years and nine months in prison for selling the IDs of Puerto Rican U.S. citizens to illegal immigrants residing in the United States, according to authorities.

Reynaldo Rodriguez-Canario, aka Reinaldo Rodriguez, Reynaldo Rodriguez, Reinaldo Canario, Jose Almonte, Jose Martinez, Matatan and Ciego, 47, a citizen of the Dominican Republic residing in Puerto Rico, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Aida M. Delgado-Colon of Puerto Rico.

Rodriguez-Canario plead guilty on Feb. 16, to conspiracy to possess and transfer identification documents, conspiracy to encourage an alien to reside in the United States for financial gain, and aggravated identity theft.

“Rodriguez-Canario and his co-conspirators sold identity documents to illegal aliens knowing that those documents would be used to commit crimes, including Social Security fraud,” said Assistant Attorney

General Brian Benczkowski. “The Department of Justice and its law enforcement partners will not tolerate criminal aliens who undermine the integrity of the U.S. immigration system. We will aggressively enforce U.S. immigration laws and seek stiff penalties against those who violate them.”

“Identity theft poses a severe threat to public safety by potentially enabling those with criminal intent to travel to or remain in the United States,” said HSI Executive Associate Director Derek Benner. “HSI will continue to utilize its unique authorities, working closely with our law enforcement counterparts, to combat this crime and ensure justice for the victims.”

According to admissions in his plea agreement, Rodriguez-Canario obtained identity documents of Puerto Rican U.S. citizens, usually consisting of birth certificates, social security cards and driver’s licenses, and shipped them to co-conspirators in the United States.

Further, the plea agreement states that his co-conspirators sold Social Security cards and Puerto Rican birth certificates to individuals illegally residing on the mainland United States for prices ranging from $500 to $1,300 per set.

The defendant admitted that the coconspirators used money transfer services and the U.S. mail to complete their illicit transactions.

Rodriguez-Canario also admitted that he knew that the customers who purchased the identity documents intended to commit social security fraud and other criminal offenses, according to officials.

ICE arrests at New York City Courthouses are increasing A New York City: rrests of Immigrants at or near New York City courthouses by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have spiked dramatically in recent months, according to a leading advocacy organization tracking the practice.

While these highly controversial operations have drawn outrage from defense attorneys, who argue that turning courthouses into hunting grounds for arrests perverts and undermines the role of the court as a place to seek justice, the arrests themselves are rarely seen by the outside world.

That changed on Thursday, when a bystander outside the Queens County Criminal Court filmed a crew of plainclothes ICE officers, in coordination with New York

state court officers, dragging a man into an unmarked vehicle as he attempted to enter the court.

“Why are you doing this to me?” the man yelled, as roughly a half-dozen officers took him into custody.

“Who is this?” a woman off camera asked.

“They’re ICE,” someone replied.

With his hands cuffed behind his back, the man was pushed into a white Dodge.

“Why you do this to me? Why?” the man asked again, before being taken away.

Joshua Epstein, supervising immigration attorney at Queens Law Associates, confirmed that the man was a client of his organization. Though the public defender organization declined to provide the man’s

name for privacy reasons, Epstein told The Intercept that they had confirmed that his arrest was carried out by ICE. The man was appearing in court for a misdemeanor, he said, and he was on a path toward a noncriminal disposition. ICE did not respond to a request for comment on Thursday’s arrest.

“This one example is just one of many where someone was just trying to access his due process rights in criminal court and wasn’t able to,” Epstein said. Had the man appeared in court, he likely would have been able to settle his case without producing a criminal record, Epstein explained, but now that he is in immigration custody, the situation becomes far more complicated. “One of the problems now, when

someone is in ICE detention, is that we have to request writs for the people to produce the client in criminal court on their next court date, which may or may not happen.”

Once in immigration detention, Epstein went on to say, clients are effectively cut off from meaningful programs that they would otherwise have access to before pleading to a noncriminal violation. “When you’re in detention, you can’t access those programs, so your plea offers get much worse,” Epstein said, adding that if an individual is in immigration detention, an open criminal case also makes “meaningful deportation relief” all but impossible to obtain.

A decision regarding the expansion of the 2022 World Cup will be made in 2019 prior to the draw for World Cup qualifying. If the tournament is expanded to 48 teams, Qatar will share the World Cup with at least one more team from the Asian Football Confederation.

Disabled train causes more headaches Transit riders I

t was another nightmare morning commute for New Jersey Transit riders after a rail maintenance equipment car became disabled due to mechanical failure in the North Tube of the Hudson River Tunnel.

Delays in and out of Penn Station New York exceeded 60 minutes and lasted several hours as Amtrak attempted to remove the disabled train, but efforts were further stalled when the train derailed.

Workers were eventually able to re-rail and clear the train from the tunnel, and normal operations resumed around 10:30 a.m.

s it possible for hackers to steal this year’s election? A Kane In Your Corner investigation finds New Jersey’s voting system remains among the most vulnerable in the country.

And experts say hackers would only have to tamper with one or two voting machines statewide to create doubt and unrest, a situation most nearby states could avoid.

When New Jersey voters go to the polls next Tuesday, most will cast ballots on some of the oldest machines still in use in America.

Robert Giles, New Jersey’s election director, says “when the machine is used as it’s meant to be used, it’s accurate and reliable.”

New Jersey election officials insist the machines are safe, in part precisely because of their age. Since the machines can’t be networked, hackers would have to tamper with one at a time. “Some of these attacks, yes, you can do them in a lab,” Giles says. “But are they viable attacks in the real world? And they really aren’t.”

Paterson wanted man found in Brooklyn

A

Paterson NJ man wanted for shooting a man on Park Avenue was hiding out in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, according to authorities.

Qualil Moore, 25-year-old, was arrested in New York City on Tuesday by the U.S. Marshals, authorities said.

Moore was identified as the actor in the June 22, 2018 shooting on Park Avenue and East 23rd Street. He allegedly fire shots that injured a 40-year-old city man.

Police said Moore has been charged with attempted murder and weapons offenses. Additionally, police charged him with certain persons not to have a weapon.

Moore faces a maximum of 20 years behind bars for the attempted murder offense alone.

Moore is pending extradition to New Jersey, authorities said. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office will file a motion for pretrial detention.
