Lawyer Found Guilty of Immigration Fraud By Kimmy Blair Contributing Writer Street Hype Newspaper Queens lawyer has been found guilty of large-scale asylum fraud after she was caught running a scheme to help immigrants who would typically be denied entry to the US, win asylum in the country. Andreea Dumitru Parcalaboiu, 43 was running a fraudulent immigration system that would allow dangerous criminals to be granted asylum in the United States by fabricating travel history and personal narratives. Dumitru, who was also previously investigated over a $5 million corporate tax evasion scheme, was charged with a range of crimes in association with her job as an immigration attorney. The attorney was found guilty in Manhattan federal court of asylum fraud, making false statements to immigration authorities, and aggravated identity theft on Nov. 19, 2018, following a two-week trial before United States District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan.

According to the Superseding Indictment, other filings in Manhattan federal court, and the evidence presented at trial: Between March 27, 2013, and 2017, Dumitru operated a scheme to submit fraudulent I-589 forms in connection with applications for asylum. Specifically, Dumitru presented over 100 claims in which she knowingly made false statements and representations about, among other things, the applicants’ narratives of alleged persecution, criminal histories, and travel histories. Dumitru deliberately fabricated detailed personal stories of purported mistreatment of her clients, forged her clients’ signatures and falsely notarized affidavits. The crime carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, one count of making false statements, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail, and one count of aggravated identity theft, which carries a mandatory consecutive sentence of two years in prison. No sentencing date has been announced.

EDITORIAL Of Martin Luther King’s celebration and government shutdown

A

mericans celebrate January 21st as Martin Luther King Day. What a time to honor a man who has contributed his life to what he believed was an elevation to humanity and that is, the idea that everyone is equal regardless of the color of his or her skin. Back in 1963, Martin Luther King delivered his I have a dream speech. This speech was delivered by the civil rights activist on account of black people to have economic and civil rights and an end of racism in America. In the speech, King mentioned, “This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with meaning. My country, tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. A land where my fathers died, land of pilgrim’s pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring. And if America is to be a great nation, this must be true.” King was a man of hope, and even though he was talking about the freedom of black people, I believe he was prophesying about the freedom of all people. If we do not stop labeling people by the way they look, we will not be able to discern the content of their character. Today, in 2019, the “I have a dream speech,” could be reread because even though we are not necessarily in chains, we have not been emancipated mentally as seen in the leaders we choose to govern us. And if we think that what is happening in the government won't affect us because we may not be federal workers. We should know that what affect some people will eventually affect all people.

On top of federal workers not being paid. The government shutdown has affected National parks, many immigration cases had been postponed and/or canceled, Food and drug administration have suspended food inspection, Department of Housing and Urban development funds ran out and because of that they cannot pay the landlords of the tenants that are on financial assistance, just to name a few. So, let us take this time to think of ways we can join together to end this government shutdown. Because the walls we are building to keep others out could be the very walls that lock us in.

Bronx butt doctor on manslaughter charges Buttocks enhancement product kills woman BRONX Bronx woman has been indicted for Manslaughter and other charges for allegedly providing illegal silicone injections that caused the death of a 48-year-old woman. Whalesca Castillo, 44, of 2219 Seward Avenue, Bronx was arraigned last week on second-degree Manslaughter, Criminally Negligent Homicide and Unauthorized Practice before Bronx Supreme Court Justice David Lewis. Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark said, “The defendant allegedly illegally injected the victim with a silicone substance for cosmetic purposes.

Whalesca Castillo, 44, Unlicensed beautician is charged with manslaughter for killing a woman during a botched butt lift as it's revealed she previously served two prison sentences for running shady medical operations.

Tragically, the injections killed the victim, who had traveled from Philadelphia to the Bronx for the procedure.” According to the investigations, on or about June 17, 2018, in the defendant’s home, Castillo injected silicone substance into the body of Lesbia Ayala, as part of an illegal cosmetic procedure to enhance the buttocks of the victim. The defendant did not have a license to practice medicine or cosmetic surgery. The victim died of systemic silicone embolism syndrome shortly after receiving the injections.

Transgender ban is cruel, and inhumane says Clarke

WASHINGTON, DC: ongresswoman Yvette D. Clarke (NY09) released this statement following Supreme Court decision allowing Trump administration to begin enforcing its ban on transgender service members in the military: “Donald Trump’s ban on transgender Americans serving in our nation’s military is extremely calculated, cruel, and inhumane. Its sole purpose was to dehumanize and degrade brave women and men seeking

to serve their country and further divides our nation. “I am very concerned that the Supreme Court is permitting this ban to proceed for now, providing a year of uncertainty for our military and creating an opening for hatred, bigotry, and discrimination to take root. This was a shameful decision by SCOTUS that weakens our military and our nation. “Transgender Americans are not a burden and deserve to serve with dignity”

New campaign comparing sugary drinks to cigarettes T

he Health Department on January 7 announced the launch of a new media campaign that compares sugary drinks to cigarettes. The campaign emphasizes that both products are hazardous to your health and reminds New Yorkers not to give sugary drinks to children. Sugary drinks – including soda, sweetened iced tea, sports drinks, energy drinks, fruit punch and other fruit-flavored drinks that have added sugar – can lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cavities and weight gain. In New York City, sugary drink consumption overall declined among adults between 2007 and 2017. About 1 in 4 adults and 1 in 3 public high school students drink at least one sugary drink per day. Rates of consumption are much higher in communities of color, especially for the youngest New Yorkers (up to age 5) – the prevelance for Black children is 28 percent and Latino children is 31 percent, compared to 8 percent among Whites. The ads, in both English and Spanish, are running on TV and social media citywide. The campaign runs through early February. “Like cigarettes, sugary drinks are bad for our health and can have long-term consequences,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot. “Through this campaign, we hope all New Yorkers will understand that, while sugary drinks may be sweet going down, their impact on our health is not. We urge all New Yorkers to consume fewer sugary drinks, and parents should not give sugary drinks to their children.” “Sugary drinks are the largest source of

added sugar in our diets - more than desserts, candy and other sweets combined. It’s extremely worrisome that one third of our youth have at least one sugary drink a day.” said Deputy Commissioner Dr. Sonia Angell. “This campaign is part of our ongoing efforts, from working with industry to reduce sugar in the food supply overall, to increasing no and low-sugar drink options available in schools; NYC is working hard to make healthy choices the easiest choices for all of us.” “Sugary drinks are just as bad as smoking cigarettes,” said Assistant Speaker Felix W. Ortiz. “Both are harmful, resulting in poor health to those who take them. What more does it take to convince people that smoking can lead to cancer and that sugar calories bring on obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease? We need to do all we can to limit use of these products. This new city media campaign will help get the word out to avoid sugary drinks.”

Difference between Social Security and SSI

T

he Social Security Administration (SSA) offers two types of disability benefits: SSI, or Supplemental Security Income; and SSDI, or Social Security Disability Insurance. While both benefit programs are designed for disabled individuals, their eligibility requirements and benefits differ. The main difference between Social Security Disability (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is the fact that SSDI is available to workers who have accumulated a sufficient number of work credits, while SSI disability benefits are available to low-income individuals who have either never worked or who haven't earned enough work credits to qualify for SSDI. While many people don't distinguish between SSI (Supplemental Security Income) and SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance), they are two completely different governmental programs. While both programs are overseen and managed by the Social Security Administration, and medical eligibility for disability is determined in the same manner for both programs, there are distinct differences between the two programs.

What Is SSI? Supplemental Security Income is a program that is strictly need-based, according to income and assets, and is funded by general fund taxes (not from the Social Security trust fund). SSI is called a "means-tested program," meaning it has nothing to do with work history, but strictly with financial need. To meet the SSI income requirements, you must have less than $2,000 in assets (or $3,000 for a couple) and a very limited income. Disabled people who are eligible under the income requirements for SSI are also able to receive Medicaid in the state they reside in. Most people who qualify for SSI will also qualify for food stamps, and the amount an eligible person will receive is dependent on where they live and the amount of regular, monthly income they have. SSI benefits will begin on the first of the month when you first submit your application. SSI applicants are somewhat more likely to be female as fewer women are eligible for SSDI benefits (about 71% of women compared to 79% of men), generally because women have fewer qualifying years of work (over 60% of men have worked at least part of every year of their adult life, while only 41% of women can say the same). ———————————————MAURICE MAITLAND LAW FIRM 23 West Main Street, Ansonia, Connecticut 06401 mdm@mdmlawyer.com • www.mdmlawyer.com

This program allows J-1 doctors to apply for a waiver of the two-year residence requirement after completing the J-1 exchange visitor program. The expiration only affects the date by which the J-1 doctor must have entered the U.S.; it is not a shutdown of the Conrad 30 program entirely. Non-minister religious workers. Jimmy’s presence gives credence to our journey and is an encouragement for other peoples of African descent to join us in our push to realize the vision of the Honorable Marcus Garvey, which demands the return of Blacks to their motherland; the unity of the BLACK RACE worldwide with Self-reliance at its base; thereby, organizing ourselves into an independent black nation here at home and abroad,” says Michael R. Duncan, PresidentGeneral of UNIA-ACL. “I have visited much of Africa during my lifetime, but Liberia remains the only African country that eluded my schedule. I am very eager to get to Liberia finally. I am especially pleased to know that the First Lady of Liberia, Clar Duncan-Weah, is a Jamaican. I highly anticipate meeting with her and the President, His Excellency George Weah,” says reggae icon Jimmy Cliff.

Jamaica appoints new High Commissioner to Nigeria

Trinidadian boys returned Kingston, Jmaiaca WI: diplomat in the Ministry of Forto their mother Career eign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Esmond Reid, has been appointed as Jamaica’s High After being brought by father to Syria

Syria: wo Trinidadian children kidnapped and taken to Syriain 2014 by their father, who is said to be an ISIS fighter, have been reunited with their Trinidadian mother. The Kurdish administration of northern Syria released the boys into the care of their mother on Monday. The boys, who were taken to live in the so-called IS "caliphate," were able to leave Syria with the help of rock musician Roger Waters, who helped their mother fly to Syria to meet them. The Kurdish authorities say their father was killed. But the Trinidad and Tobago government on Tuesday said there was no record of the two children being kidnapped by their father and taken to Syria as it responded to the international media reports about the boys' release. The Ministry of National Security said a special team which had been established to deal with possible repatriation and reintegration of Trinidadians who have been held in refugee and detention camps in Syria and Iraq, had started an investigation and verification exercise to ascertain the facts surrounding the two boys.

T

Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith made the announcement on Tuesday, January 22. Mr. Reid succeeds outgoing High Commissioner L. Ann Scott, who has returned to the Ministry’s Headquarters. He will also serve as non-resident Ambassador to other countries in Africa. In welcoming Reid’s appointment, Minister Johnson Smith noted that “He has led an outstanding career in the Foreign Service over the last 28 years, with a proven track record in foreign trade policy development and negotiation as well as investment promotion. I am confident that he will continue to conduct the Government of Jamaica’s business with distinction.” Mr. Reid is an International Relations and International Business Specialist with a wealth of experience in multilateral and bilateral diplomacy and trade relations. Guyana church leaders want antiGay laws to stay News Americas, GEORGETOWN, Guyana: ore than eight dozen leaders of Guyana’s Christian Evangelical and Pentecostal church are urging the government to keep the country’s anti-gay law intact. According to Demerara Waves news, the group took out a local newspaper advertisement registering their strong objection to any attempt by government to give into the demands by the gay and lesbian community to remove anti-gay laws including those against “buggery” in the South American CARICOM nation. “Moreover, we believe buggery and other practices characteristic of the LGBTQ community, lifestyle is in fact, detrimental to persons engaging in them, and the decriminalization of such acts, will have the effect of escalating the practice of these harmful and destructive behaviors, and endangering the morals of our youth and society as a whole,” the church leaders stated. Roman Catholic and Anglican Bishops were not among the signatories in the ad. Guyana, like most British-Caribbean nations, inherited the anti-gay laws when independence was granted by Britain and have not moved to change them. Britain has since repealed those laws because they violate human rights. Guyana is the only country in South America, and the only country in the Americas outside the Caribbean, where homosexual acts are still illegal. Under the laws of Guyana, homosexual acts carry a possible punishment of life imprisonment.

Jamaicans in the US excited about Harris's presidential bid Senator Kamala Harris

New York, NY: amaicans in the United States are reportedly ecstatic about the announcement by Democratic Senator Kamala Harris that she will run for president in the 2020 election. The California senator, who was elected in 2016, has a Jamaican father and an Indian mother. Wayne Golding, a member of the Jamaica Disapora Advisory Board for

J

the Southern US, said they have been paying attention to her rise in politics and were expecting the announcement. "We are very excited that the confirmation of what we felt that we knew all along was gonna happen," he said. Golding said it is delightful that a member of the Jamaican diaspora has the opportunity to be elevated to the presidential office. Harris, 54, is a vocal critic of Pres-

ident Donald Trump and is described as a rising star within the Democratic party. Elizabeth Warren, Kirsten Gillibrand, Tulsi Gabbard, John Delaney and Julian Castro are among those who have also announced their intention to run. The 2020 Democratic presidential primary will be the first time more than one woman competes for the party's nomination.

Usain Bolt retires from football

E

ight-time Olympic champion Usain Bolt has announced he is done pursuing a professional career in football after a brief stint last year with Australian Aleague club Central Coast Mariners. Bolt spent two months training with the Mariners but left in November after the club failed to find financial backing for a professional deal. The 32 year old speaking to Reuters described his time in Australia as “A good experience. I really enjoyed just being in a team and it was different from track and field and it was fun while it lasted.” The highlight of Bolt’s short-lived football career was a two-goal performance against Macarthur South West United on October 12. The triple Olympic champion also declined a two-year contract offer from a semi-professional team from Malta and spent time training with Norwegian team Stromsgodset and German giants Borussia Dortmund. According to Bolt, his focus now lies with his various commercial endeavours. “I’m now moving into different businesses, I have a lot of things in the pipeline, so as I say, I’m just dabbling in everything and trying to be a business man now.” Bolt in the meantime will be in South Africa where he has been announced as the host of the Sun Met.

Kingston, Jamaica WI: oca-Cola, through its local bottler Wisynco, has partnered with the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) to support the Reggae Girlz on their journey to France. The team made history by being the first Caribbean nation to qualify for the international championship. The Reggae Girlz are one of the top women's national football teams in the Caribbean, and were drawn with Australia, Brazil and Italy in their zone. They end a five-day training camp in preparation to their first practice match against Chile on February 28 and March 3 at Kingston's National Stadium and Montego Bay's Catherine Hall Stadium, respectively. Michael Ricketts, president of the JFF, welcomed Coca-Cola's sponsorship of the Reggae Girlz. According to Ricketts, “the JFF is very elated and excited at the prospects of what could very well unfold, having now partnered with Coca-Cola. I must express my absolute delight and of course I am pretty certain that we would want to have a long and lasting relationship with an international product like Coca-Cola. We hope that this will be a most productive partnership.” Cola supports the team through the Jamaica Football Federation and the Reggae Girlz Foundation, while contributing to the spirit of the Jamaican fans all around the nation. The brand will also dress the players by providing them with special competition and travel gear.

broke me up into unexplainable pieces courageous one,” said Selwyn Collins, author and talk show host. “Now, in your honor, I break my fast from this digital wilderness, for you, my sister. I’ll ensure they remember you, A.B.G. – A Better Guyana.” “Mrs. Butters- Grant was greatly admired and respected as a female entrepreneur and trailblazer,” the Guyana President’s office said in a statement. The Guyana Ministry of Natural Resources lauded Butters-Grant for the role she played in the natural resources sector, calling her a miner in her own right and a source of inspiration within the MSG and wider natural resources sector. Butters-Grant was born in Charlestown, Guyana and moved to the US in 1986. She

earned a degree in business administration with a minor in accounting and database management in 1990 from Essex College of Business. Being the daughter of successful seafood entrepreneurs, she opened a Seafood Market soon after, specializing in only wild caught seafood sourced from Guyana with the mantra “straight from the sea to your plate.”. After selling her first business, she moved on to distribute wild caught seafood to supermarkets throughout the state of New York and New Jersey as “Butters & Grant Caribbean Seafood” and then returned to Guyana in 2015 where she opened Global Seafood Distributors with her husband, Kerwin. Butters-Grant is survived by her husband and daughter Tiffany Sobers as well as a grandson.

City Council members get tablet computers T he city is buying a dozen tablet computer devices for City Council members to reduce paper usage. Council members agreed to award a $24,388 contract to GovConnection of Merrimack, NH for 13 Microsoft Surface Professional tablet computers last week. Each machine will have 512 GB of storage, Intel Core i7 processor, and 16 GB of memory, according to municipal records. At first the council appeared divided on purchasing the devices as the city deals with a massive budget shortfall that may result in a big tax increase on homeowners

beyond the two-percent cap. But last week, the council voted 8-1 to purchase the tablets. Council members Al Abdelaziz, Ruby Cotton, Michael Jackson, Shahin Khalique, Maritza Davila, Lilisa Mimms, William McKoy, and Flavio Rivera voted in favor while Luis Velez voted against. Rivera, chairman of the finance committee, said the tablets will produce a great deal of savings for the city. “Instead of having all this paper, we’ll have ready access right there,” he said. “It’s not just papers there’s also human hours.”

RELATIONSHIP

Don’t bring your toxic relationships into 2019 But what I will tell you is this: The more you love yourself, the faster you’ll notice when something in a relationship just isn’t right. The more you love yourself, the

By Debra K. Fileta o you find yourself wondering if you’re in a toxic relationship? Maybe you’ve been there. Or maybe you know someone who has. Maybe you find yourself in a dating relationship in which things aren’t the way you had hoped. Maybe the disappointment has just started settling in — or maybe you’ve been struggling for years. Maybe you’ve even spent your energy trying to block out the voice telling you something just isn’t right. And now, here it is again. Whether a newbie to toxic relationships, or a veteran….you’re here because there’s a relationship in your life that’s just not the way it should be. Something is wrong. Maybe it’s that guy, who doesn’t seem to be as interested in you as you are in him. Maybe it’s the girl who never seems to take initiative in your relationship. Maybe it’s that person who keeps saying “I’m going to change” and then never does. Maybe it’s the nasty argument you had last night that keeps happening again, and again, and again, like a bad song on repeat. Maybe it’s those lies and secrets that you keep trying to pretend don’t exist. Maybe

D

easier it will be to recognize a relationship in which you’re not really loved. Because LOVE isn’t a feeling. Love is a decision.

it’s the fact that you’re not, and never have been, on the same page spiritually. Maybe it’s because you find yourself always having to be someone you’re not. Maybe it’s that on again, off again, emotional roller coaster ride that you’ve been dealing with for God only knows how long. Or maybe it’s even more severe. Maybe it’s abuse, addiction or betrayal. A toxic relationship can come in many forms. No matter what it is for you, crappy relationships exist when there’s a pattern of unhealthy behaviors, feelings or interactions in a dating relationship. Unhealthy patterns that keep coming up, time and time again. Sometimes, you can be in a relationship for so long you stop seeing how unhealthy it really is until someone points it out. And even then, you try to make excuses. You try to ignore it. You try to pretend it’s all okay. But deep down you find yourself struggling with that sinking feeling: How did I end up here? I wish I could answer that question for you. I wish I could sit down with you and hear your entire story from start to finish, and help you work through that important question.

It’s always a big night when you have a little blue pill.
