emocrat Jumaane Williams has won a special election to serve as New York City's public advocate. The City Councilman from Brooklyn defeated 16 other candidates Tuesday to win an office that holds little power but can serve as a stepping stone to higher office. Williams is a former tenant organizer who has served on the City Council since 2009. The seat was vacated by the election of former public advocate Letitia James to the position of state attorney general. The public advocate functions as city ombudsman. The advocate can investigate citizen complaints about agencies and services but has no subpoena power. Williams will have to compete again in a June primary and a November general election if he wants to serve as public advocate past the end of 2019. A whopping 17 candidates were in

the running, including former City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. "Today, I'm very focused on this election," MarkViverito said. "It's very e m o tional right n o w having c a s t m y ballot for the first time citywide."

EDITORIAL

The History behind Black history month Black History month is dedicated to celebrate the achievement of African Americans and people of African descent in the United States and other countries around the world. According to History. com, “Black history month grew out of “Negro History Week’, the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent Americans.” To this day, February is the designated month to celebrate Black history and to highlight those who have played a central role in the lives of black people. For the month of February the black community used the time to remember those who have fought for the rights of blacks to be free, own their own property, to vote and to be seen as equal. The black community around this time would recite the quotes, and stories of popular fore-fathers and mothers such as Martin Luther King Jr, Malcom X, Rosa Parks, Marcus Garvey and Harriet Tubman just to name a few, in churches, community meetings, schools, and other events as a way to continue to unite the race. This is done annually to remind the black community of the journey to freedom and to inform the new generation of their history as a race. However, after interviewing a few people, many of them believed that the history being told is not the real history of black people. In fact, they believe the elders are doing the black community an injustice by passing down the pain of our fore-fathers to every generation making it impossible for us to move on as a people.

By Solemn_Vow editor@streethype.net That could be true but I believe it is very important for us to know the history of our bloodline because walking blinding into the future doesn’t mean that our past will not show up and it doesn’t mean that we are truly free. However, if we should tell the story more on the side of triumph rather than on the side of pity, then they would change everything. I believe the message of Black History is more about the resilience, perseverance and strength of the black race and if we can instill that in our next generation we would create a race that will be able to champion over any adversary. So let us never forget our past so that we can walk uprightly into our future.

Will 2019 Be Your Year? L

ast year was a very challenging year, and I was happy to see it end! Of course, we all struggle at times, but 2018 reminded me that life sometimes will kick you in the rear: when you least expect it or want it to! The year grabbed me by the balls and wouldn’t let go! “Your balls Sandy? you query. No balls over here, but I’m sure that you understand my point! As challenging as the year was, I am drawn to the Nelson Mandela quote," I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not the who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." Wonderful words to live by! I’m often gripped with fear as I continue to dream, and dream big; but there’s no choice, in my opinion, as living with regret is the worst kind of life that there is. However, the important questions to ask are, "Are we bold enough to tackle all that life has to offer us? Do we buckle at the knees each time we’re met with challenges? Is this the year that you’re able to be your most courageous self? I try my best to face each day with dignity but each day is difficult, and it can only be helped with humility and deep faith in one's own God: whomever she may be. As 2018 ended, it also reminded me that "Life is really like a box of chocolates," as Forrest Gump said in the 1994 hit movie. Bwoy, you really neva know what yu going to get! As the old folks used to say, "You make plans and then God laughs at your plans and does what he wants to do.” The one above gives you what has been ordained for you. With that being said, one only has to follow the will of the one up above and ride the wave, and truly follow the path that has been laid out for you. I’ll continue to tackle issues head on, dealing with each situation as they arise. This is the beauty of the journey of life. Difficulty will certainly come your way, however, your difficulties do not define you. Your character is tested, and thrust into the

Sandy Daley Social Writer and Journalist forefront by how you handle stressful situations, and "if it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger". You know that you are a brave woman Sandy, for making the choices that you do," a close friend said recently. "No, I’m not," I replied very sternly. "I make decisions based on my ability to handle each situation. If I can handle it, I trust myself to go forward, and so therefore I do," I quickly added. A new year brings uncertainty, yes, but also excitement. Where will you be in a little while? What will the year bring? No one knows, but I’m grateful that with each passing day, there’s hope for us all. Also, remember that everyone's journey is different! At times it’s easy for you to look at others with regret for your own life. Your statement, along with a prayer of course, should be, "Life, do your worst, as I intend to do my best." That line always gets me going! ———————————————Sandy Daley — sandydaley88@hotmail.com Instagram: whosevaginaisitreallytv; Facebook:Sandy Daley; Twitter: whosevaginaisit; Linkedin: Sandy Daley

Williams Elected Public Advocate Continued on page 4 Monday evening, a sealed arrest record leaked showing that Williams spent a night in jail 10 years ago after a domestic dispute with his then-girlfriend. Williams characterized it as a verbal dispute. The charges were dropped and the arrest record sealed. "I don't want to get into political motivations, it was an important topic, people asked questions, and we answered them," Williams said. State Assemblyman Michael Blake and City Council Member Rafael Espinal, Jr. are also in the mix, as is the only Republican in the race, Queens City Councilman Eric Ulrich. The winner will have to compete again in a June primary and a November general election if she or he wants to serve as public advocate past the end of 2019. The seat, which was vacated by the election of former public advocate Letitia James to the position of state attorney gen-

eral, functions as city ombudsman. It can investigate citizen complaints about agencies and services but has no subpoena power. Still, the job is coveted because it has become a springboard to real power. "So it's a really important job, everyone get out and vote," Mayor Bill de Blasio said. "It's not going to take long today. You're not going to have long lines." The public advocate's office was created out of the previous position of City Council president, which had been a powerful position but was weakened and then abolished in an overhaul of the city charter. The public advocate serves as an ombudsman to the city and is second in line to succeed a mayor departing before the end of his term. It is also seen as a potential launching pad to higher office; Mr. de Blasio went from being public advocate to becoming mayor.

Brooklyn Tax Return Preparer Pleads Guilty to Tax Fraud A

Brooklyn, resident pleaded guilty on Friday (February 19) to 42 counts of an indictment charging him with 18 counts of wire fraud, 22 counts of aggravated identity theft, one count of conspiring to commit aggravated identity theft, and one count of aiding and assisting the filing of a false tax return. According to court documents, Bamgbala, the owner of Kaybamz Inc., a tax preparation business located in Brooklyn, New York, used stolen Social Security Numbers to file false tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to obtain

fraudulent refunds. The superseding indictment also alleges that Bamgbala and others conspired to deposit the unlawfully obtained tax refund checks into a specified bank account to obtain the cash value of those checks, and created fraudulent IRS forms and New York State identification documents to facilitate the scheme. Bamgbala faces a mandatory minimum sentence of two years in prison for each count of aggravated identity theft, a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for each count of wire fraud, a maximum sentence of five years in prison for each conspiracy

count, and a maximum sentence of three years in prison for the aiding and assisting in the filing of a false tax return count. He also faces a period of supervised release, restitution, forfeiture and monetary penalties. Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Zuckerman and U.S. Attorney Donoghue commended special agents of IRS Criminal Investigation, who conducted the investigation, and Trial Attorneys Mark McDonald and Eric Powers of the Tax Division, who are prosecuting the case.

FDA warns of potentially harmful and illegal marketing of dietary supplements

T

he FDA is warning about the risks of harmful dietary supplements, alerting consumers about false claims, unknown ingredients and potentially dangerous products. "The big question is, what's in them? There is no requirement to have them looked at or analyzed before they go on to the market," Dr. David Agus said Friday on "CBS This Morning." "And so we need quality, and at the same time, we need to get away from the claims — [like] we're going to stop Alzheimer's and cancer with these pills.

Without data, lots of claims are being made." In February, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb announced new efforts to modernize the regulation of the dietary supplement industry, stating: "As the popularity of supplements has grown, so have the number of entities marketing potentially dangerous products or making unproven or misleading claims about the health benefits they may deliver." The FDA also warned companies illegally selling products as dietary supplements, falsely claiming to treat or cure Alzheimer's

disease, among other health conditions. Americans spent more than $40 billion on supplements last year. Three out of every four Americans regularly take a supplement, according to the FDA, in an industry that's grown from about 4,000 products to more than 50,000 in the past 25 years. "Right now the FDA, when you submit a drug, it looks and makes sure it's exactly pure before you give it. And it looks at a clinical trial to say, can you make the claims it works?" Agus said. "

WASHINGTON: ong-time Trump fixer and personal attorney Michael Cohen publicly blasted his former boss at a blockbuster congressional hearing Wednesday, February 26, 2019, comparing President Donald Trump's reaction to his testimony to that of a "mobster" and saying the president had "wanted me to lie" about prior discussions of a possible real estate deal in Moscow. Cohen also told the House Oversight Committee that Trump knew Roger Stone had spoken to Julian Assange ahead of the WikiLeaks drop of Democratic National Committee emails.

L

"I was in Mr. Trump’s office when his secretary announced that Roger Stone was on the phone," Cohen said in his opening statement before the House Oversight Committee. "Mr. Trump put Mr. Stone on the speakerphone. Mr. Stone told Mr. Trump that he had just gotten off the phone with [WikiLeaks founder] Julian Assange and that Mr. Assange told Mr. Stone that, within a couple of days, there would be a massive dump of emails that would damage Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Mr. Trump responded by stating to the effect of 'wouldn’t that be great.'"

Cohen, however, said that he knows of no direct evidence that Trump or his presidential campaign colluded with Russia. "I do not. I want to be clear. But I have my suspicions," he said. When asked if Cohen knows of other criminal conduct by Trump that hasn't been discussed in the hearing Wednesday, Cohen said, "Yes," but said he can't discuss it because of ongoing federal investigations. He also declined to answer a question about the last time he spoke to Trump and what the president said to him, saying that the Southern District of New York had asked him not to discuss that information publicly.

Wayne Wonder to make Vibe Lounge debut on March 3 By Rachel Damarr Williams Contributing Writer cclaimed Jamaican reggae/hip hop artist Wayne Wonder will make his Vibe Lounge debut on Sunday March 3 as part of the lounge’s exclusive DVP (Day Vibe Party) 100 Concert Series. The event begins at 4pm with Wonder slated to take the stage later in the evening. Located in Rockville Centre Long Island, The New Vibe Lounge is gradually emerging as one of Long Island’s premiere cultural and entertainment facilities and recently played host to a sold out staged reading performance of David Heron’s legal drama Against His Will. The DVP 100 Concert Series is a daytime party event hosted on select weekends at the lounge and features accomplished musical artistes as well as award winning DJs from across the USA and The Caribbean. It will be the first time in his lengthy career that Wonder will perform at the lounge. Born Von Wayne Charles in eastern Jamaica, Wayne Wonder is considered to be one of Jamaica’s premier reggae fusion artists. Beginning his career as a reggae and dancehall performer, he became known for early hits such as Long and Lasting Love and Saddest Day, recorded with Jamaican producing legends King Tubby and Dave Kelly, respectively. His popularity surged after he toured internationally with several of Kelly’s Penthouse label luminaries including Marcia Griffiths, Tony Rebel and Buju Banton in the early 1990s. But his major international breakthrough would come in 2003 when he signed with Atlantic Records. That collaboration produced his biggest

ctor Jussie Smollett's character is being removed from the final two episodes of the Fox hip-hop drama Empire after he was arrested and charged with staging a hoax hate crime attack on himself. The African-American actor was arrested on Thursday on February 22nd for filing a fake police report claiming he was the victim of a homophobic and racist assault. He reported that two masked men struck him and put a noose round his neck. Empire's executive producers called the allegations that Smollett had falsely claimed he was the victim of a hate crime disturbing. Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson on Thursday said Smollett orchestrated the attack because he was unhappy with his salary on the show, and that he paid two brothers US$3,500 to commit the supposed hate crime. Police did not spell out how the 36 year-old actor had hoped to boost his salary by staging such a hoax. Smollett could face a prison sentence of one to three years if convicted.

hit to date, No Letting Go, which was a Billboard top 20 hit in the USA and a top 5 single in the United Kingdom. The single was considered a true embodiment of the fusion of Wonder’s reggae dancehall sound with rap and hip hop elements, which had lead to collaborations with the likes of Foxy brown and Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes in the early 2000s. According to Vibe co owner Patrick Aitcheson, the lounge is “thrilled and excited” to be hosting Wonder for the first time, and plans to bring artistes of similar caliber to Vibe on a regular basis as it continues to create its niche within the Long Island community. “ We are definitely anticipating a terrific event with Wayne Wonder at the helm come March 3, and his Vibe Lounge debut is something we know audiences will thoroughly enjoy,” he says. “My Vibe co owner and partner Dwayne Reynolds and myself are committed to using the DVP 100 Concert Series as o n e of our flagship events as we look to solidify our position as a true entertainment and cultural landmark in Rockville Centre and the surrounding community. The immediate plan is to continue with more varied entertainment events- playreading productions, poetry slams, comedy nights- as well as day parties with major artistes and deejays to ensure that something great is always happening at Vibe. Believe me, this is just the beginning.” The New Vibe Lounge is located at 60 North Park Avenue in Rockville Centre, Long Island, 11570. Tickets to the DVP 100 Concert Series event featuring Wayne Wonder are $40 each and are available at www.eventbrite.com/

Plans Underway for Jamaica Cubans Diaspora Conference 2019 affirming ‘irrevocable’ P socialism HAVANA: ubans have overwhelmingly ratified a new constitution that reaffirms that socialism on the island is “irrevocable” while also legalising modest economic reforms instituted over the last decade. But in an unprecedented display of ballot-box dissent on the Communistruled island, more than 700,000 people voted “no” to the new founding document. 86.85% of those who voted answered “yes” to the question, “Do you ratify the new constitution of the Republic”. 9% of voters opposed ratification and 4.15% spoiled or left ballots blank. Turnout was 84.4% The state had campaigned hard prior to the vote, casting a “yes” vote as an act of patriotism and a vote for the Revolution. TV, radio, posters, billboards and huge banners unfurled over public buildings urged the population to get out and vote. Even the electric ticker boards on buses chugging along Havana’s main thoroughfares read “I Vote Yes” (“Yo Voto Sí”). But the state was met with a surprisingly forceful challenge from an unofficial campaign against the new constitution. Evangelical churches concerned that the new constitution would create a pathway towards gay marriage hung banners reading “marriage: man + woman” from church walls, while religious activists daubed posters on lamp posts – a direct challenge to the state’s monopoly on public space. Although pastors did not explicitly call for a “no” vote, analysts say the church campaign mobilised non-religious, socially conservative sectors of the population to vote against the new constitution. And while state media gave no airtime or column inches to critical voices, #I’mVotingNo (#YoVotoNo) hashtags were trending on Facebook.

Plans are underway for the staging of the 8th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference, which is to be held in Kingston from June 16 to 20, 2019. Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., said the planning is in the preliminary stages and the Ministry will be seeking the input of overseas nationals in order to make the conference a success. “Your voices will form part of the programmes and events that will be implemented,” he pointed out. The State Minister was addressing members of the United States Diaspora (US) at its inaugural leadership summit at the Morrow Convention Center in Georgia. He hailed the three-day event, held from November 16 to 18, as “timely and visionary” as it places Diaspora interests on the centre stage. “It presents an opportunity to further cement intra-Diaspora partnerships with the national goals in sight,” he added. Noting that an objective of the summit is the development of a strategic Diaspora development plan, Mr. Charles Jr. said that the plan should be inclusive “where it brings together the Jamaican organisations, associations and task forces and those who may not be affiliated with any group. It should also entail strong partnerships and co-operation across a wide spectrum at the local and national levels.” He said the plan should also embrace the youth. “I intend to lead the establishment of Diaspora Youth Councils so that the young people will have a functional space to craft ingenious strategies and progammes for their own empowerment. Venezuelan refugees now number 3.4 M Humanitarian implications massive, UN warns NEW YORK, USA — s the number of refugees and migrants from Venezuela continues to rise – hitting the 3.4 million mark this month – United Nations agencies sounded the alarm on Friday over the humanitarian needs these women, children and men face, and the strain this represents for communities hosting them. The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and the UN migration agency (IOM) issued statements based on data from national immigration authorities and other sources, showing that, on average, in 2018, 5,000 people left Venezuela every day in search of protection or a better life. The vast majority of them – 2.7 million – are hosted in countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. Currently, Colombia hosts the highest number of Venezuelan refugees and migrants, with over 1.1 million. It is followed by Peru, with 506,000, Chile 288,000, Ecuador 221,000, Argentina 130,000, and Brazil 96,000. Mexico and other countries in Central America and the Caribbean are also hosting significant numbers of refugees and migrants from Venezuela. “The countries of the region have shown tremendous solidarity with refugees and migrants from Venezuela, and implemented resourceful solutions to help them,” said Eduardo Stein, joint UNHCR-IOM Special Representative for Venezuelan refugees and migrants. “But these figures underscore the strain on host communities and the continued need for support from the international community, at a time when the world’s attention is on political developments inside Venezuela,” he stressed. To date, Latin American countries have granted about 1.3 million residence permits and other forms of regular status to Venezuelans. Asylum systems have also been reinforced in order to process an unprecedented number of applications. Since 2014, over 390,000 asylum claims have been lodged by Venezuelans – close to 60 per cent (232,000) happened in 2018 alone.

Pearnel Charles Jr., Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade pand the Birthright Programme by giving youngsters the opportunity to experience Jamaica in terms of the work environment and culture. This will serve to strengthen the affinity and linkages with Jamaica,” he noted. In her remarks, Jamaica’s Ambassador to the United States, Audrey Marks, pointed out that the Jamaican Diaspora represents more than a source of remittances, noting that the Government of Jamaica sees nationals abroad as important partners in nationbuilding. “Your support, over the years, which has taken many forms, is deeply appreciated. As the Government takes the necessary steps to take the country to the next level of development, we invite you to join in, so that together, we can realise Vision 2030, which seeks to make Jamaica the place of choice to live, work, raise families and do business,” she said. Meanwhile, Ambassador Marks informed that the Embassy will stage a number of town hall meetings in key cities across the United States so that Jamaicans can be aware of the impact of the evolving policies on Jamaicans living in the country.

Windies all-rounder set for 4th England ODI St George's, Grenada: est Indies all-rounder Andre Russell is set to make his first international appearance since last August after being named in the hosts' squad yesterday for the upcoming fourth and fifth One-Day Internationals against England. The 30-year-old has been struggling with a knee problem, and although chief selector Courtney Browne admitted his fast bowling may be hampered, he said his lower-order hitting could prove crucial. Russell takes the place of Kemar Roach, who was ruled out of the series with a back injury. “We believe Russell will add value to the

W

squad,” said former Windies wicket-keeper Browne. “We are well aware that although Andre's bowling may be limited due to a knee problem, his tremendous batting ability to power the ball in the back end of the game will be an asset to the team.” The five-match series is level at 1-1 heading into yesterday's third ODI in Grenada, which was eventually abandoned due to rain. The Windies' performances in the opening two matches and their preceding 2-1 Test series victory have raised hopes that they could be surprise title challengers at this year's World Cup in England and Wales, which starts on May 30.

Reggae Girlz dolls ‘Strike Hard’ T

he island's leading doll producer, Island Dolls Plus Collection, is striking hard after receiving permission from the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) to produce the official Reggae Girlz Dolls. It was indeed sheer jubilation in the company's camp when the news broke. Beverley Robotham-Reynolds, CEO at Island Dolls, indicated that she was humbled and elated to be a part of this historic event when given the opportunity to produce the dolls and thereby promoting Brand Jamaica as all the outfits and assembling of the dolls will be done in Jamaica. She first studied the composition of the team members and decided that one doll would not represent the team, so there are five dolls in the collection, with different skin tones and hairstyles thereby representing our motto, “Out of Many One People”. The dolls are beautifully attired in outfits similar to the Reggae Girlz and come with a hang tag about their journey to France 2019.

NEW JERSEY NEWS

Legalization of marijuana may be on the horizon EDISON deal to legalize recreational marijuana in New Jersey may be one step closer to becoming a reality. Reports from multiple outlets this weekend indicate New Jersey legislators hope to vote by the end of this month on a proposal that would make marijuana legal for adult use. Gov. Phil Murphy has long-wanted marijuana to be legal and campaigned on the issue in 2017. But his attempts to legalize marijuana have so far, fallen short. "By legalizing adult use marijuana, first and foremost, we can reverse the in-

equality and unfairness left from years of failed drug policies, and shift public safety resources to where they can do the most good," Murphy said during his State of the State address in January. Murphy, state Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin had clashed about how to tax legal marijuana. Now it seems like they've reached an agreement. Gov. Murphy planned in last year's budget for a 25 percent sales tax on marijuana. Sweeney planned for about 10 percent. The deal would tax marijuana at $42

per ounce. They've also agreed the governor will have more of a say in setting up the regulatory commission that will administer the details of legal marijuana sales. Key issues remain even if the marijuana deal goes through. Police have said they don't currently have the tools or training to determine if a driver is legally impaired due to marijuana use. Murphy said he wants the records of those charged with marijuana crimes expunged, but it is unclear what would happen to those currently in prison on non-violent drug charges stemming from the sale of marijuana.

New survey ranks Christie as America’s most unpopular governor EDISON ew Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has been ranked as America’s most unpopular governor in the latest edition of Morning Consult’s senator and governor approval ratings. The media and technology company’s rankings were compiled using over 85,000 survey interviews with registered voters across the U.S. from January through April 2017. Christie's disapproval was at the highest it's ever been in Morning Consult's rankings, with 71 percent disapproving of the job he is doing and only 25 percent approving. According to Morning Consult, Christie's numbers took a turn for the worse in the months following his endorsement for Donald Trump for president.

New school rules:

Limos and luxury cars banned for prom WANAQUE: eniors at Lakeland Regional High School in Wanaque are now banned from taking limos and other luxury cars to prom, according to new school rules. According to the rules, students must take school-provided, chaperoned coach buses to and from the venue in Rockleigh in early June. The buses are scheduled to leave at 6:15 p.m. and return at 11:45 p.m. Schools officials say it's the best thing for student safety. No parents or students will be allowed to drive to the venue, and no limos or party buses will be allowed on the school grounds. Seniors are worried the new move could take away from their full prom experience.

TAX GUIDE

How To Avoid Tax-Season Scams T

ax season is always a great time for scammers to try and part you from your money and your personal information. Anyone filing in 2019, however, might face some unique challenges. Our article can help you stay safe as you get ready to file your taxes and beyond. Tax season is a great time for scammers, because it combines two things that really motivate people into making dubious decisions: money and fear. Thanks to a convergence of chance occurrences, however, this tax season may be the best scammers can hope for. Here are some things to watch out for as you get ready to file your taxes.

SecurityWatch That's true every year, but events in 2018 and early in 2019 have added even more fodder for scammers. The longest government shutdown in history has put extreme financial stress on hundreds of thousands of taxpayers, forcing some to take out loans, drain savings accounts, and take other actions just to stay afloat.

Scammers always exploit major events in the news, and the shutdown combined with 2018 tax season is perfect for their purposes. Ne'er-do-wells could pretend to be government agents, loan collectors, or anyone they think will get your attention. They might demand money be paid, or try to extract personal information out of you to be used for other kinds of fraud.

Lastly, the tax overhaul has created a lot of uncertainty for tax filers this year. Most Americans have at least heard of the tax overhaul, even if they don't understand every facet of it. That creates confusion, which scammers can use to their advantage. Fraudsters might claim to be the IRS, and cite nebulous tax overhaul reasons that you need to provide them with money or personal information. This issue could be compounded by the extended government shutdown, which could place strain on agencies and organizations themselves struggling to make sense of what the new tax code means. Staying Calm in Chaos While this tax season has some unique factors that work to the advantage of scammers, the best ways to stay safe are the same as always. Interrogate emails that you receive and avoid clicking on links in messages or downloading attachments, especially if they come in unsolicited emails. Look carefully for spelling mistakes, unusual URLs (https://www.irs.gov vs. http://www.ir-s.ru/taxplayer), and unusual email addresses. Don't give out personal information like Social Security numbers, Tax ID numbers, and banking information unless you're confident it's going to the right place. If you're using online tax software, make sure that you don't find yourself redirected to a phishing site. These are phony websites that mimic real ones to trick you into giving away your personal information.

The Perfect Tax-Scammer Storm Filing your taxes is about money, which is a prime motivator that can be exploited by scammers. Money is in the air every year at this time, with people worrying about how much they'll have to pay and salivating at how much they might get back in the form of a tax refund. Scammers can play on both of those money-related emotions, sometimes threatening a fake audit or offering a fat payout in exchange for personal information. Tax season is also advantageous to scammers because the IRS and tax preparers are some of the few people that actually do need your personal information. If a stranger asked you for your Social Security number, you'd probably say no. But if that person said they were with the IRS and needed to confirm some issues with your taxes, you might be more likely to agree.

RELATIONSHIP

Ways to open up to Love again after you’ve been hurt By Rania Naim t can be very hard to open up to love again after you’ve been hurt. But if we don’t allow ourselves to open up to love again, we can miss out on the good things in life and we can miss out on the chance of finding the love we truly strive for. 1. Think of heartbreak as something of the past. You can’t take the heartbreak with you wherever you go, it can be hard to forget it but it doesn’t have to be the first thought that comes to your mind whenever you meet someone who has potential. The person who broke your heart in the past has nothing to offer you in the present, so why let them shape your future? 2. Trust the God. What if life has better plans for you? Plans that don’t involve tears and heartaches. This is why the only way we can trust the God is to let go of what we can’t change, or stop trying to change someone who is not willing to. 3. Take the lessons. The truth is sometimes you have to get knocked down to learn how to stand back up. To open up to love again, you have to look at the lessons your heartbreak taught you about yourself; maybe it taught you to trust your intuition or to love yourself more, or maybe it taught you how to walk away or when to draw the line. Learning from your past mistakes is the only way you can lead yourself to find love you deserve rather than crumbs of love. 4. Don’t take your bitterness or your resentment. It can be easy to think everyone’s out to get you when you’ve been hurt before, but instead of being stuck on the pain and everything that went wrong, allow yourself the power of forgiveness and remind yourself that whoever hurt you was not an evil person, they just weren’t the best person for you. 5. Understand that closing your heart off is not going to make you any happier. It’s normal–even healthy to have some walls up, but to close yourself off completely and have a negative outlook on love is only going to set

I

you up for regret and misery. The grass is not always greener on the safe side. 6. Be honest with yourself. Be honest with yourself about what went wrong, sometimes it’s you and sometimes it’s them. Sometimes it’s timing and sometimes it’s your own fears and insecurities. If you can be honest with yourself about what exactly went wrong and pin down how you contributed to it, you are more likely to avoid these mistakes in the future. 7. Accept that love will always be risky. Opening up to someone or falling in love with someone will always be risky and the outcome will never be guaranteed, but as with everything in life, some things are totally worth the risk, sometimes taking the risk is the only way you can actually feel alive. 8. Take your time. Take your time to heal. Take your time to get to know someone new. Take your time to listen to your heart and pay close attention to your feelings. Take your time to open up to love again so you can make sure you are ready for the right kind of love when it knocks on your door.

9. Let go of comparisons. Comparing yourself to others, or comparing others to your ex will only impede you from enjoying the moment. Don’t judge a book by its cover and don’t be so hard on yourself. We are each on our own journeys and we should trust that our story will eventually have a happy ending.

10. Remember that you are lovable. Think of all the people who love you and the people who think highly of you. Think of the good things you do for people and the ways you support your friends and family. Think of how you keep trying to be a better person; let these be reminders that you are a person worthy of love and that you deserve phenomenal love.
