In celebration of our Mothers
he second Sunday in May each year is celebrated as Mother's Day to recognize mothers, motherhood and maternal bonds in general, as well as to spotlight the positive contributions that they make to society. Mother's Day celebrations worldwide have various origins and traditions. However, most have now been influenced by the American tradition established by Anna Jarvis, who campaigned for the holiday. Organized by Jarvis, the first official Mother's Day was celebrated at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, which now holds the International Mother's Day Shrine.
It should be noted that Mother's Day in the United States sought to promote peace by means of honoring mothers who had lost or were at risk of losing their sons to war. However, today the focus is on the mothers, who continue to struggle with various social and economic issues. In New York, despite the Women's Equality Agenda/Act, our women continue to face discrimination and inequality based on gender. As a result of current divorce practices and laws, women and children are falling into poverty. Every effort must be made to assure fairness in all domestic relations law.

roup dynamics involve the relationships among the members or a group or team as well as the relationships of the members with the leader. The relationships create a dynamic that the leader must manage to maximize the effectiveness of the group or team. Because human relationships are complex, various types of situations or problems can arise to produce conflict that the leader must understand and react to by influencing individual members of the group or team. Conflict is a normal dynamic in a group or team that must cooperate to achieve an objective. For example, there can be disagreements about the approach to solve a problem or perform a task among members that is a natural outcome when a complex issue arises. Conversely, the absence of conflict can be an indication that the team is not functioning properly because agreement may be the result of an authoritarian leader or of another factor. The appropriate role for the leader of the group or team is to assist the members to work through the conflict to achieve consensus that supports cooperation. The conflict dynamic in a group generally involves differences between the individual members of the team and the team leader. When managing conflict in a group, the leader can use various approaches that are suited to the specific characteristics of the follower, such as becoming more directive or allowing the follower to participate in the decisionmaking process. In a team, the conflict occurs among the members of the team with different causes, depending on the stage of development. In the storming stage, for example, conflicts stem from disagreements about the roles of the members of the group and the implicit rules governing relationships. In the performance stage of development, conflict arises from disagreements concerning the way tasks should be performed.
Dr Neva Alexander SPEAKS
The role of the leader is to manage rather than eliminate conflicts. Conflicts become unhealthy for the group or team only if they are so severe as to undermine cooperative working relationships. At the same time, a normal amount of conflict is beneficial because it can contribute to innovation. A particularly important function of the leader for managing conflict in a team is assisting the members to identify the source of the conflict. The source of conflict may not be apparent and may not be related to a task, which can occur if social or organizational factors contribute to disagreements. The leader should also ensure that the members of a team avoid personal attacks when expressing disagreements in a team context because this type of conflict can escalate and lead to uncooperative attitudes among team members
In general, leaders can attempt to resolve conflicts in a group by acting along an integrative dimension in which the concern is to secure an outcome acceptable to others and a distributive dimension in which the concern is to achieve an outcome that is desired by the leader. The degree of emphasis on the integrative and distributive dimensions determines the style the leader uses for conflict resolution. If the leader is relatively indifferent to the outcome from a personal or group perspective, the approach is likely to be avoidance. This allows the conflict to continue with no resolution. If the leader is indifferent to the distributive outcome but places a high emphasis on the integrative outcome, the leader is likely to use an accommodating conflict resolution approach that provides the members of the group with the outcome they desire. When the integrative and distributive approaches are in balance, the approach to conflict resolution involves compromise. --------------------------------------------------Dr. Neva Alexander, an Educational Consultant, neva.alexander@gmail.com • www.nevalliance.com

Jamaican lottery scamer to face 40 Yrs

BISMARCK, N.D.— A 25-year-old Jamaican man was convicted Thursday for his role in a Jamaican lottery scam that authorities say cost victims around the country millions of dollars.
We Want More Funding to Fix Dangerous Streets Members of the Transportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets
Sanjay Williams, 25
Sanjay Williams, of Montego Bay, Jamaica, was found guilty of conspiracy, wire fraud and money laundering and faces up to 40 years in prison. Investigators described Williams primarily as a "lead broker" who bought and sold "sucker lists" of potential victims. He was the only one of 32 defendants to opt for trial; about a dozen defendants are awaiting extradition from Jamaica. Prosecutors said Williams, who was arrested in North Carolina, was the first person from Jamaica convicted of selling the lead lists used in the scam. "I hope it makes a difference," Assistant U.S. Attorney Clare Hochhalter said. "I hope it sends a message to the people who continue doing this crime." Defense attorney Charlie Stock said he hadn't decided on whether there would be an appeal. "I need to speak with Mr. Williams to see where he wants to go," he said. Jurors in U.S. District Court in Bismarck had deliberated since Tuesday afternoon before reaching a verdict. Prosecutors said the case came to light four years ago when Edna Schmeets, 86, of Harvey, North Dakota, received a call from a man who told her she had won $19 million and a new car, and needed only to pay taxes and fees. The process dragged on until the widow's savings were wiped out, a sum of about $300,000. Hochhalter told jurors that the subsequent investigation identified more than 70 people — mostly older and vulnerable citizens — who were scammed out of more than $5.2 million. About a dozen victims testified during the trial by video and in person. The victims "came from all walks of life and from across the country" and ranged from a woman who owned three successful businesses to a World War II fighter pilot, Hochhalter said, adding that some of the victims "as little as weeks ago were still sending money." Stock said in his closing arguments that the case wasn't about sympathy, but about evidence. Stock said that so many people involved in the scheme used fake names and IDs that it's difficult to believe most of the witnesses, one of whom he described as a "heroin addict and thief."

By Brian Zumhagen ransportation Alternatives and Families for Safe Streets are calling on Mayor de Blasio to adopt the City Council’s request to double the capital commitment to fix the City’s most dangerous corridors — and to increase the Department of Transportation’s operating budget for street redesigns. Advocates have presented thousands of petition signatures in support of the Council’s recommendation, from New Yorkers who need life-saving street safety improvements in their neighborhoods.

The ‘Annual Cannabis Parade and Rally’ kicked off on last Saturday. The ‘Parade’ was successful but the underlining politics are troubling for the legalize marijuana movement. The new blueprint for the marijuana movement in New York will pit medical marijuana against recreational marijuana and rich users against poor users, fragmenting the NY marijuana movement into ever-smaller social groups competing for slices of the growing multi-million dollar marijuana market. Call it “Divide and Lose.” Observers on the front line of the legalize marijuana movement say it’s a shrewd strategy for rich ‘Potbarons’ already in the in the game.
“We commend Mayor de Blasio for his commitment to eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries, and we thank the Council for its request to double the capital funding of the Vision Zero Great Streets program to $500 million,” said Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives. “Now the Mayor must adopt the Council’s recommendation and make this critical Vision Zero investment. In addition, we call on Mayor de Blasio to increase the Department of Transportation’s annual operating budget.
This will expand DOT’s capacity to use the additional capital funding and complete at least 80 street-safety projects around the City each year.” “Under Vision Zero we’ve seen great improvement in street safety throughout our City. However, our arterial streets, only 1015 percent of each borough’s roadways, still cause over 50 percent of traffic-related deaths,” said Council Transportation Chairman Ydanis Rodriguez. “In order to make lasting change, and build on our successes in 2014, we must truly invest heavily in redesigning these dangerous roadways.”

Republicans to partner with Jamaica Labour Party
By Michael A. Wattkis, Consulting Editor n effort to promote democracy and good governance, the New York State Republican Party and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) are developing strategies of mutual interest for both parties. These were the comments echoed during a meeting with Senator Robert ‘Bobby’ Montague, chairman of the opposition Jamaica Labour Party and Edward F. Cox, chairman of the New York State Republican Party on Friday (May 1) at the Republican’s Manhattan offices. Senator Montague, who was on a threeday “Jamaican Leadership Diaspora Tour,” said the meeting with Cox was very enlightening and instructive as they discussed not only political and party management issues, but investment opportunities for Jamaica, especially in the energy sector. “We are very happy to be partnering with the Republican Party as we seek to enhance the JLP party machinery and prepare to take leadership of Jamaica,” said Montague. Cox lauded the visit of Senator Montague as an opportune time to connect with the Jamaican community in New York, as well as to partner with the Jamaican popula-
tion in supporting democracy and policies to enhance the living standard of ordinary people. “Jamaicans in New York are among the most productive and the most educated people in the State -- contributing significantly to the development of the society,” Cox observed. He said both the GOP and the JLP have similar ideals and values and he was looking forward to strengthening relationships in the areas of training, data management and research. He also said the Republicans will also be engaging the Jamaican and Caribbean diaspora in New York as the party seeks to address the needs of the people. Hosted by the Proud Jamaican Foundation, a New York-based social development and think-tank organization comprising the Jamaican Diaspora and supporters of the JLP, Montague’s visit was the first leg of the tour that will bring Opposition Leader Andrew Holness to New York this fall. Montague’s New York visit included meetings with several business and political leaders, a Town Hall meeting in the Bronx, tours of Jamaican-American businesses in the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn, and a fundraising gala. This networking event is being co-hosted by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, and is part of a sustained effort by Borough President Adams to advance hiring of local residents through the borough. According to statistics by the New York State Department
of Labor, Brooklyn’s unemployment rate in March 2015 was 6.7%, a higher number than that of the city and the state. “A Brooklynite with a job is a Brooklynite with boundless potential, and during my administration Brooklyn Borough Hall will always be a place committed to opening the doors to those opportunities,” said Borough President Adams. “I thank the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and all of the incredible businesses that have stepped up to the plate and asserted they want to employ local talent. Hire Brooklyn, hire the best.”

“This was a great opportunity for the community to meet the chairman in an up close and personal setting, to ask questions and air concerns about the future of our homeland,” said Maitland.

Cayman Islands premier files defamation action against opposition leader
GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (CNS) -- Cayman Islands political leaders are heading for a major courtroom showdown after Premier Alden McLaughlin’s lawyers filed suit against opposition leader McKeeva Bush on Thursday for libel, slander and defamation, claiming unspecified damages. As previously reported, the territory’s premier is taking his opposite number to task over allegations Bush made in a proposed private member’s motion and at a press conference, where he accused McLaughlin of being part of a conspiracy that he says unlawfully ousted him from office. Cayman Islands Premier Alden McLaughlin in the Legislative Assembly McLaughlin cited the motion, the press conference called to publicize it, the wide media coverage it received and further comment Bush made to CNS via text message in the wake of a letter sent to him demanding an apology, which was published last Friday, as the grounds for his claim. The premier has also requested an injunction by the court to restrain the opposition leader from repeating what he states are the malicious falsehoods being alleged against him.
Guyana goes to the polls on Monday in 'historic' election V GEORGETOWN, Guyana -oters in Guyana go to the polls on Monday in what some are terming an “historic election” since that country’s independence from Great Britain in 1966. This election is unique because a combined opposition of blacks, East Indians, Amerindians and Douglas (mixed raced), under the umbrella of the APNU and AFC, have formed a coalition to oust President Donald Ramotar and his ruling People's Progressive Party's (PPP) which has been in power for the past 23 years and which has been accused of rampant corruption, nepotism, political victimization, human rights abuses and withholding local elections for two decades. The PPP is hoping that its East Indian supporters, descendants of bonded labourers from India, who began arriving in the former British Guiana in 1834, will put it back in office and with a majority in Parliament. Guyana’s ethnic voting pattern cracked in the last general election in 2011, when the PPP lost some of its Indian supporters to the AFC, a multi-ethnic coalition, and ended up losing its majority in parliament. Late last year, Ramotar suspended parliament in order to avoid a vote of no confidence but eventually succumbed to international pressure to call early national elections. However, Carter left Guyana on Sunday, after complaining that he felt unwell. The Carter Center issued a statement say-

ing he was returning to Atlanta and cutting his election observation visit short. The statement did not specify why Carter, 90, left, only saying he was "not feeling well." "President Carter is hopeful about Guyana's election and expressed his commitment and that of The Carter Center to supporting Guyana in the days ahead, stressing the need for a peaceful process before, during, and after the election," read the statement. The PPP has been accused of using race to demonize the Afro-dominated APNU and its presidential candidate, retired army Brigadier General David Granger, by reminding its Indian voters of the APNU’s (formerly the People's National Congress (PNC)) dictatorship, which they alleged sent the army and police to terrorize Indians. More recently, it seems that the PPP has moved away from the Jaganite secular-left and embraced radical ethnic and religious elements into its camp in an effort to “milk the race card” some observers allege.
Grenadians Oppose closure of New York Consulate
L
NEW YORK, USA -ast week’s opening by the Grenada government of a new consulate in Miami Beach, Florida, has provoked a reaction from New York-based Grenadians, who have already been voicing frustration and dismay over the closure of the country’s consulate in New York. Grenada’s ambassador to the United States in Washington, DC, Dr Angus Friday, is expected to address the issue at a town hall meeting in New York on June 7, when it is likely he will be pressed vigorously on the matter. The current situation and the fight to reopen the New York consulate has been highlighted in recent weeks in the media by outspoken Grenadian activist, Helen Grenade, apparently with little or no responsive action by the Grenada government in this regard. Meanwhile, a group of Grenadians in New York, using the name 'Grenadians for Change', is also campaigning for the reopening of the consulate in that region. The group met for the second time on Saturday, May 2, 2015, to express their frustration at what they describe as the continuing neglect of Grenadian nationals in New York and the surrounding area. The group issued a statement on Friday in which they claimed the closure of the consulate is unacceptable since Grenadians in the affected areas are being deprived of their fundamental right to have adequate protection and emergency consular services in a timely manner.
Jamaican Teachers To
Continue Protest
J
Kingston, Jamaica WI: amaican teachers are expected to continue protest action next week as they await a decision from the Government on a revised salary increase. The Government had announced a five per cent increase for the country's 26,000 teachers, but that was rejected by the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) which encouraged its members to stage a one-day protest two weeks ago. The Government last week, however, said it would return to the table with a new wage offer in two weeks. But at a recent annual general meeting of the JTA Co-operative Credit Union, President of the JTA Doran Dixon, urged teachers to wear black over the course of the next two weeks until the Government presents a new offer. He has encouraged teachers to also send a daily countdown to the minister with responsibility for the public sector in the Ministry of Finance, Horace Dalley, to highlight the seriousness of their claim. Teachers and other public sector workers have been subjected a five-year wage freeze with the inking of a four-year economic support programme with the International Monetary Fund. The teachers are now demanding a 25 per cent increase over two years. ----------------------------------------
US Continues Pursuit of Offshore Banks
T
WASHINGTON, USA -he US Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday reached a resolution with Vadian Bank AG (Vadian), located in St Gallen, Switzerland, under the DOJ’s Swiss Bank Program. “Today’s action is another warning for those who are still considering hiding money offshore to evade US tax laws,” said Chief Richard Weber of IRS-Criminal Investigation (CI). “The IRS and DOJ continue to aggressively work together to put an end to this abuse. When individuals and institutions allow this to happen, they are not only cheating the US government, they are cheating the honest taxpaying citizens who are obeying the law and doing the right thing.” The Swiss Bank Program, which was announced on August 29, 2013, provides a path for Swiss banks to resolve potential criminal liabilities in the United States. Swiss banks eligible to enter the program were required to advise the department by December 31, 2013, that they had reason to believe that they had committed tax-related criminal offences in connection with undeclared US-related accounts. Banks already under criminal investigation related to their Swiss-banking activities and all individuals were expressly excluded from the program.

Avoiding pitfalls in a Real Estate Purchase
he purchase of real estate in Jamaica is not free of its obstacles. While a rewarding investment, care must be taken in the approach taken in property acquisition. There are a number of pitfalls that a Purchaser must avoid in the process and I will examine three at this time. 1. Never give a Vendor purchase money. Countless real life scenarios come to mind of Purchasers who have given part or all of the purchase money to Vendors and later have to make contact with an Attorney when the Vendor fails to deliver a duplicate Certificate of Title registered in the name of the Purchaser. Closely aligned to this issue, is the situation where a Purchaser hands over cash to a Vendor in exchange for property which has no registered Title and again an Attorney is contacted on the tail end to rectify a situation that has turned sour. 2. Purchasing property without carrying out Caveat searches or retaining a Surveyor to produce a Surveyor’s Report is risky especially when purchasing a property with cash, without the need for a mortgage. Mortgage companies in ap-
LAUREN BOYD BY
proving a mortgage and before releasing mortgage proceeds would as a matter of course carry out a caveat search and would require a Purchaser to submit a Surveyor’s Report as part of the documentation for a mortgage application. However, do not become complacent when purchasing property using your own resources. Ensure that caveat searches are done before making your deposit and just before Completion.

3. Entering into a contract for the purchase of real estate without legal assistance. While property acquisition appears to be a straightforward process, there are quite a few complicated steps along the way that only a properly trained professional, in this instance, an Attorney can handle. The Vendor’s Attorney’s contract ultimately requires the Purchaser to sign on the dotted line and its terms are pro Vendor for the most part. An Attorney is useful in guiding a Purchaser through the process of a purchase, even in the instance where a Purchaser is getting a mortgage. Please bear in mind that Attorneys who work for mortgage companies are not representing the interests of a Purchaser, but rather at all times works in the best interest of a mortgage company.

Bridgetown, Barbados:
est Indies fought gallantly at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on Sunday's 3rd day of the 3rd and final test against England, to win by 5-wickets and level the 3-test series 1-1.
Darren Bravo 82 and Jermaine Blackwood who hit the winning run and ended on 47 not out, put on a match winning partnership of 108 runs for the 5th wicket which saw the Windies home with 2-days to spare. Despite adding vital runs on the 3rd morning, England were bowled out for 123 in 42.1 overs, setting the Windies 192 runs to win and the final test left on a knife edge in Bridgetown with one over before lunch. The West Indies faced one over before lunch and were 4-0, Kraigg Brathwaite on 4 and debutante Shai Hope on 0. Final scores again: England 257 and 123; West Indies 189 and 194-5. Thompson, Powell dominate Jamaica International Meet
Kingston, Jamaica: ormer world record holder Asafa Powell restored pride to the Jamaican camp with a world-leading 9.84 seconds in the 100m in silencing a strong field including American Ryan Bailey, while newcomer Elaine Thompson proved to be 'The Real McCoy' in winning the 100m in 10.97 seconds at the Jamaica Invitational International Meet at the National Stadium last night. Spurred on by a large crowd, Powell brought the house down in making a grand return to competitive action on local soil. He left the blocks like a bullet, kept his form well and powered home in 9.84 seconds, the 84th time he has dipped below the 10-second barrier. But, more importantly, he defeated Bailey, who felt the wrath of the Jamaican public for his 'throat-cutting' gesture toward Usain Bolt after anchoring the US to victory in the 4x100m at the IAAF World Relays in The Bahamas last week.

The 35-year-old bludgeoned the Punjab attack on his way to a whirlwind 117 from 57 balls including 7 fours and 12 sixes as Bangalore tallied a massive 226-3 from their 20 overs. Punjab never looked like getting close in their reply, as 4 wickets apiece from Australian Mitchell Starc and Indian Sreenath Aravind saw them dismissed for 88. On reaching his century Gayle pro-

Bailey, who was booed throughout despite a concerted effort to win over the crowd, clocked 9.93 seconds to finish second ahead of Nesta Carter in 9.98 seconds. Jamaica's Andrew Fisher was fourth in a personal best of 10.01 seconds. Thompson, who had the world-leading time of 10.92 seconds done at the UTech Classic a few weeks ago, showed that she will be a force to be reckoned with in the 100m, beating a world-class field in 10.97 seconds. Thompson, 22, the training partner of sprint queen Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, wasn't the best away but recovered well and led Commonwealth Games champion Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria and American star Allyson Felix at the half-way mark before impressively pulling away for a comfortable win. Okagbare was second in 11.06 seconds with Felix third in 11.18 seconds.

Power Struggle Mars Friends of Trelawny
A
By Patrick Maitland Editor-Street Hype near year-long rancorous battle over the leadership the Friends of Trelawny Association Inc. (FOTA) will come to a head in a Queens courtroom May 12 when a judge will begin to decide which of two rivaling factions will lead the group. The controversy puts in doubt the staging of the 34th annual Trelawny Day that FOTA organizes and which brings thousands current and former Trelawnyites from all over the world to New York over the Memorial Day Weekend. The New York based non-profit has been deadlocked in a bitter struggle for leadership that erupted last summer. Just days after five board members were elected at FOTA’s annual general meeting June 21 in Queens, the outgoing leadership declared the elections “null and void,” questioning the legitimacy of three of the newly elected directors and re-doing the elections on July 25. A second, and new, board was elected. As a result, two FOTA boards have been operating since last year, causing mass confusion with Trelawnyites in the Diaspora and in Jamaica. “The outgoing board unjustly declared the election null and void,” said Derrick Scott, president for board elected at the June 21 AGM. “The integrity of the organization hinges upon compliance of its bylaws. We have taken steps to commence a lawsuit in Supreme Court to advance our position. The Court agrees that our position has merit and has granted us an opportunity to appear in Court on May 12, 2015.” According to court papers obtained by Street Hype and was filed last week by Attorney Donald Vernon in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of Queens, on behalf of Derrick Scott (President) Tomlin Anderson, Harry “Peter” Johnson, Michael Wat-
Jennifer Noble - president
tkis and Lance Hall, the defendants Jennifer Noble (chairman), Ralston Roberts, Trevor Crawford, Carl Brissett, Ferdinand Bright and Michael Hyatt continue to serve on the board of directors of FOTA in violation of the foundation’s bylaws. The motion said the conflict erupted at the organization’s 2013 annual general meeting in Brooklyn when the bylaws that govern the organization were breached. “At the May 2013 general meeting for the elections of directors, a quorum was not satisfied as there were 18 persons present, which is less than the 25 required by the bylaws. Notwithstanding a lack of quorum, the 18 members voted to suspend the bylaws and went on to elect a new board of directors for the vacate positions. Such action is also illegal,” Vernon explains. Vernon said FOTA held a meeting on June 21, 2014 in Queens to elect and fill the five vacates positions on the Board. “The members of FOTA were given proper notice of the meeting pursuant to the bylaws and quorum were satisfied,” Vernon noted. At that meeting Michael Wattkis, Tomlin Anderson, Peter Johnson, Lance Hall and Oliver Huie
Derrick Scott - president
were elected to the Board. However, then outgoing chairman Ralston Roberts sent an email dated June 25, 2014 to members declaring the election held on June 21, 2014 null and void and asserting that three of the five people elected to the Board did not satisfy the necessary requirements to serve on the Board. The former chairman also announced that a new meeting for re-elections would be held July 25, 2014. At that meeting the following members were elected to the Board: Ralston Roberts, Trevor Crawford, Carl Brissett, Ferdinard Bright and Michael Hyatt. Since then both boards have claimed their legitimacy to serve the organization and have continued acting simultaneously. “We tried several time to reach an amicable settlement in keeping with our bylaws, but to no avail. Our only choice was therefore to take the matter to the Court,” Wattkis noted. However, an angry Jennifer Noble, president of the rival board, told Street Hype she was not aware of any court actions or injunction to stop the executive from operating. She further claimed that Wattkis and others are on a power struggle to take control of FOTA.
“They are also not in support of my leadership as I was not born in Falmouth,” she alleged. “We are doing fine. We are about helping the people of Trelawny and will continue to help them,” Noble promised. Attorney Vernon is seeking an order declaring the election held on July 25, 2014 null and void, restraining the current Board of Directors from acting, reinstating the previously elected directors to the Board, and for such a further relief that this Court may deem just, proper and equitable. “In the interim, FOTA will continue to function as a pillar of the expats community of Trelawny. We will be proceeding with our annual events as scheduled,” Scott said. FOTA organizes the annual Trelawny Reunion Picnic, which started as a small gathering of Trelawnyites in 1981, but has grown exponentially in recent years when it has attracted some 8 to 10,000 people. In 2007, FOTA expanded the weekend to include a fundraising gala and a business and investment symposium. A tax-exempt organization, FOTA’s primary purpose is to raise the economic, educational and social levels of the residents of Trelawny, Jamaica, W.I.

Day History
M
other's Day is celebrated to honor all mothers and express gratitude for the hardships they bear in bringing up a child. Most countries including US, Australia, Canada and India celebrate Mothers Day on the second Sunday of May. Mothers Day came into being due to the efforts made by Ms Julia Ward Howe and Ms Anna Jarvis. The Resolution for having a dedicated Mother's Day was signed by US President Woodrow Wilson on May 8, 1914. Since then people across the world have been celebrating Mothers Day with joy and devotion. Origin of Mother's Day goes back to the era of ancient Greek and Romans. But the roots of Mother's Day history can also be traced in UK where a Mothering Sunday was celebrated much before the festival saw the light of the day in US. However, the celebration of the festival as it is seen today is a recent phenomenon and not even a hundred years old. Thanks to the hard work of the pioneering women of their times, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis that the day came into existence. Today the festival of Mothers day is celebrated across 46 countries (though on different dates) and is a hugely popular affair. Millions of people across the globe take the day as an opportunity to honor their mothers, thank them for their efforts in giving them life, raising them and being their constant support and well wisher.

A MESSAGE TO MOM
B
By Council Member Jumaane D. Williams (D-Brooklyn)
“ I am spending time with my mother, Patricia Williams, who happens to be the greatest mom. But as many other families gather with their loved ones, I would like to send my thoughts and prayers to those mothers who have lost their sons and daughters to senseless acts of violence in cities like New York or mass shootings like in Newtown. No mother should have to bury their own child, but today is particularly hard for many, as they have been directly affected by the growing gun violence pandemic that continues to end far too many of our youth's lives. "I would also like to send my thoughts and prayers to the families of selfless mothers, like Zurana Horton, who have passed away shielding their children from bullets. It has been four years since Zurana was killed after she picked up her 11-year-old daughter from school in Brownsville..”

Tips for Men Posting Profiles on Dating Sites

Dear Divine Diva: ay I sit in your chair and give some advice today? It's aimed at men who place ads on dating sites and then wonder why they can't meet "quality" women. I'm an educated, decent-looking, middle-aged widow who has dated quite a lot through such ads and local social groups. Yes, it can be a jungle out there, but the Internet is a wonderful tool for bringing people together. I live in a small town, and the pool of eligible men is smaller here than in metropolitan areas. That said, there are few profiles that attract my attention and that of my divorced/widowed friends. Gentlemen, some pointers: 1. Smile! A dour expression is unpleasant. 2. We may want to see you with your shirt off after we get to know you, but it's not the most appealing or refined pose for a first look. 3. Be realistic. If you are Joe Average, we Jane Averages would enjoy meeting you. Are you REALLY going to hold out

for a model who is a decade or so younger than you? 4. Be kind to the English language. You don't have to be a genius, but it would be nice to know you can competently communicate in writing. 5. Consider a shave. Some women like men with facial hair; the majority of the ones I know do not. About 75 percent of men over 50 have a mustache, beard or both. What are you hiding under there? 6. If you're married and miserable, for goodness sake, go for marriage counseling or get a divorce. But please don't deceive women who want to meet a nice guy to share life with.

MARKETING TIP
APRIL 19-30, 2015 • STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER • 21
Highlighting the opportunities and challenges of local business
Print your best small ad on a postcard and mail it to prospects in your targeted market. People read postcards when the message is brief. A small ad on a postcard can drive a high volume of traffic to your web site and generate a flood of sales leads for a very small cost.
No single marketing effort works all the time for every business, so rotate several marketing tactics and vary your approach. Your customers tune out after awhile if you toot only one note. Not only that, YOU get bored. Marketing can be fun, so take advantage of the thousands of opportunities available for communicating your value to customers. But don't be arbitrary about your selection of a variety of marketing ploys. Plan carefully. Get feedback from customers and adapt your efforts accordingly.
BUSINESS TALK: Bronx businessman and CEO of Healthee Endeavours Junior Blake (c) talks with the visiting Jamaican leader and chairman, Jamaica Labour Party, Robert Montague and a customer last Friday at the store located at 3565 Boston Road, Bronx.

What makes this sad is that the children blame themselves. This book will show it is not their fault that mommy is sick.It will also explain that addiction is a sickness and not a crime.
