loss of Golden Krust CEO
J
By Patrick Maitland Street Hype Editor
amaicans at home and aboard are mourning the shocking and sudden death of the beloved founder and CEO of Golden Krust Bakery & Grill, Lowell Hawthorne, who reportedly took his own life at the company’s headquarters in the Bronx, New York. Hawthrone, 57, died of a selfinflicted wound to his head at his production facility, 3958 Park Ave., about 5:30 p.m. Sat. Dec. 2, according to law enforcement authorities. He reportedly left a note behind. News of the death of the wellknown Jamaican-born entrepreneur and philanthropist who headed the largest Caribbean franchise chain in the US sent shockwaves throughout the community as colleagues, family members, political, business and church leaders alike reacted with an outpouring of glowing, heart-felt tributes. “While we all struggle for answers that may never come, we must use this time to lean into the Lord and pray for the Hawthorne family,” said Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas. “Losing Lowell deals a devastating blow to the heart of our business and Caribbean community. Mount Vernon will be there for the family, as we work to find the way forward through this dark moment.” Jamaica's Consul General to New York, Trudy Deans, says the passing of Hawthorne, regarded as of the most successful and dynamic entrepreneurs in the Caribbean community, has brought “shock and disbelief” to the diaspora community. Lowell Hawthorne
An inspiration and mediator to many!
e are joining our local communities in mourning the untimely passing of the founder and CEO of Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill, Mr. Lowell Hawthorne. Those who have known his dynamic personality on the business, educational and community platforms must have been shocked by his early and untimely death. He was a thinker and a brilliant businessman. Hawthorne was a mentor to several young entrepre-
neurs who became Golden Krust franchisees. He and his family have also been among the most prominent supporters of Street Hype Newspaper over the years. In fact, Mr. Hawthorne from time-to-time would send congratulatory notes on specific feature or stories we carried in Street Hype. At age 57, Mr.
Hawthorne was in the prime of life, and his acts and deeds were showing a Midas touch. He was an inspiration to many. As a result of his visionary outlook and strategic business acumen, Golden Krust is now one of the largest and most successful Caribbean owned and operated businesses in the United States.
Mr. Hawthorne was a loving and caring man and will be sadly missed for his philanthropic and entrepreneurial spirit. Promoting good family values, unity and cooperation in business were among Mr. Hawthorne’s mission as he staffed the company with his siblings and other close family members. We hope the family will be able to carry on his legacy as we pray for blessings and prosperity. Patrick Maitland patrick@streethype.net

A closer look inside New York City schools
A
s an educator for 52 years, I know that all of our schools’ most important work happens in the classroom. In my first four years as New York City Schools Chancellor, we’ve invested in our classrooms through our Equity and Excellence for All agenda – our belief that every child, no matter what zip code they live in or where their parents were born, deserves a great education. By any measure, our schools are the strongest they’ve been, with record-high graduation rates, record-high numbers of students going on to college, record-low dropout rates, and improving test scores. We’re building on this progress with 3-K for All, Computer Science for All, and Community Schools. Many of our investments in classrooms across the City – particularly in training teachers and improving classroom instruction – are less splashy and often overlooked, but are just as critical to our vision of Equity and Excellence for All. Here are a few of those “under the radar” investments that are making an impact in our classrooms: 80 minutes of teacher training. Nearly four years ago, one of the first things I did was set aside 80 minutes at every school every week for teacher training. This is a gamechanger for schools and the children and families we serve. During the 80 minutes, teachers learn how to use new cutting-edge resources; plan for upcoming lessons; and look closely at students’ performance on tests and essays to figure out what they’re teaching well and what they need to do better. Passport to Social Studies. Since I was a child and my father read Spanish books with me about the history of Spain (his native country), Social Studies has always been my favorite subject. Unfortunately, it was not seen as a priority in schools, but it has to be. We must prepare students to be thoughtful, productive citizens, and they absolutely have to understand history, civics and current events.
By Carmen Fariña Schools Chancellor
Last school year, we released a brandnew Social Studies curriculum, the Passport to Social Studies. I’m happy to say it’s now in over 70 percent of our elementary and middle schools, and I’m excited to see that number grow as more schools focus on Social Studies. Investments in middle school. If we get middle school right, students can find hobbies and passions, and start carving their path to college and careers. We need to make the investments to reach them and get them ready for high school, college, and beyond. We now provide an after-school seat for ever middle-school student, and also started a program called “Teen Thursdays,” where 7thgrade students can visit many local cultural institutions. It’s not a given that kids and families feel welcome at their local museums and cultural centers; programs like this connect our students and parents with their City in a new way. We’re also homing in on middle school math through our Algebra for All initiative – making sure students get the math instruction they need in 5th grade and middle school so they’re ready to take on advanced math courses in high school. Collaboration over competition. I’ve always been a believer in collaboration over

competition. It is shameful when a school has great things that are helping kids and doesn’t share those resources. Last school year, we tapped into that collaborative spirit and brought the “co-located campus initiative” to 20 campuses across all five boroughs. Participating schools are on a single bell schedule so all students on the campus can share AP and enrichment courses, increasing access to more rigorous coursework. Teachers come together for shared professional development, there are family welcome centers to encourage all parents to get involved, and there have even been campus-wide proms. By coming together, schools that would have been siloed are sharing best practices and strengthening campus culture – and students are benefiting.

GOP Tax Plan
H
MANHATTAN: undreds rallied in Lower Manhattan last Saturday to denounce the newly approved Republican tax plan. Protesters gathered in Foley Square before marching to the Stock Exchange. Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Comptroller Scott Stringer joined demonstrators, voicing their outrage with the $1.5 trillion tax code overhaul. "It makes no sense that after the Great Recession, the great crash that hurt millions and millions of Americans, and no one was ever held responsible in that building there, that they're about, they're about to fleece us again. They're about to take away from the working people and middle class of America again, but we have a chance to stop it," de Blasio said. "It's a message that says that this tax plan turns the clock back on our city and rolls back progress for America," Stringer said. The House and Senate still need to iron out differences in their versions of the tax plan. After that, the bill will head to President Donald Trump's desk to be signed into law. —————————

By Street Hype Crime Reporters New York City model who went to Jamaica to work and save money for film school was found dead on the side of a road in Anchovy, Jamaica. Desiree Gibbon, 26, was found with her throat slashed on Sunday morning, just four miles away from Montego Bay, Jamaica. Peggy Brunner, Gibbon’s aunt, described Gibbon as a friend to all and a hard worker. “We loved everything about her. She was outgoing, everybody was her best friend. Desi made everybody feel like her best friend. She wanted equality for everybody, kind-hearted soul,” Brunner told the press. Brunner said Gibbon was staying in her grandmother’s hotel in Jamaica while she looked for bartending work to save
money to attend film school in Europe. The model had been in Jamaica for more than a month but was supposed to fly back to Queens on Thursday to visit family. Gibbon, who grew up modeling and competing in beauty pageants, was looking for work in Jamaica’s tourism industry. “The brutality is what killed me. She was beaten and had her throat sliced open,” Gibbon’s mother, Andrea Cali-Gibbon told the press. Gibbon is convinced her daughter was killed by someone known to her. “My belief is that it was a cold, calculated, planned-out murder,” she said. “It wasn’t a random act of violence. It somebody she knew, and it’s somebody she trusted.” Brunner is hoping that in the struggle, the suspect’s DNA was left behind.

Jamaica’s National Identification System looks to technology
WWW.STREETHYPENEWSPAPER.COM
INTERNATIONAL NEWS

J
PHILADELPHIA, (CMC): amaica is going through the looking glass, taking advantage of technology and launching a National Identification System (NIDS) in 2018, according to US newspaper, the Philadelphia Tribune. The NIDS, which has been the subject of trenchant debate here, was described as very similar to the social security number system that the United States utilises, by the Tribune on Saturday. “This will spur the growth and development of commerce and economic activity through the provision of a platform of greater security and integrity for public partnerships,” the paper quoted Prime Minister Andrew Holness as saying. The Tribune said Holness and his administration feel that the NIDS will enable the Government to ensure compliance with tax collection and other critical government functions. "It is seen as strengthening immigration laws, border control and national security,” the Tribune also said. "Furthermore, the verification system will authenticate the identity of citizens and other persons who are Jamaican residents and establish a database to generate national identification cards.” But the report noted that many Jamaicans are skeptical about the National Identification and Registration Act of 2017, stating that nationals feel “the law will turn them into just another number among the Caribbean island’s 2.8 million inhabitants.” “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” the Tribune quoted a Jamaican-American who intends to return to the island after retirement. “Jamaica has been functioning quite well without the formality of a social security system,” said Collin D, whose last name was not used. “This is just going to create more red tape that people have to go through to get anything done. I hope they have a seamless plan in place to roll this out and ensure that all Jamaicans benefit from it. It will be very interesting to see the implementation of this NIN [National Identification Number].” “I understand that the government is trying to improve things” said Garnett Mills, of Philadelphia. “When I hear that every Jamaican will be given a number, all I can think about is the mark of the beast mentioned in the book of Revelation in the Bible,” he added. “I am from the old school, and I must admit that I am more comfortable with the old way of life. There is something really fishy about this giving everybody a number business.” Gloria Jones, a Jamaican who is currently visiting family in Delaware, had much to add to the conversation. “I listened to news broadcasts and also read newspaper articles about this National Identification Number, and I agree with the prime minister,” she said.

Zimbabwean gets new president
Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, 75 is a veteran politician now serving as the third and current President of Zimbabwe. A longtime ally of his predecessor Robert Mugabe and a senior member of the ruling ZANU–PF party, Mnangagwa served as First Vice President of Zimbabwe from 2014 until his dismissal in early November 2017, which prompted a coup d'état. On November 21, 2017, Mugabe resigned (a removal recognised in a statement by the African Union, not as a 'coup', but as a legitimate expression of the will of the Zimbabwean people), and Mnangagwa was sworn in as President on November 24, 2017.
New Digital Currency for Venezuela
P
CARACAS, VENEZUELA: resident Nicolas Maduro said on Sunday that Venezuela will launch a digital currency to combat the ongoing attempts by the U.S. and its junior partners to suffocate the Bolivarian Republic through sanctions. The digital currency – called the “petro” – will be backed by Venezuelan reserves of gold, oil, gas, and diamonds, he said during the near five-hour show, which included traditional Christmas songs and dancing. The president announced that it would allow Venezuela to “advance in issues of monetary sovereignty, to make financial transactions and overcome the financial blockade.” "This is going to allow us to move forward to new ways of international financing for the country's economic and social development," said Maduro during his weekly television program broadcast on public media outlets.

St. Kitts and Nevis projects positive growth in 2018
BASSETERRE, St. Kitts: Timothy Harris-led Government of St. Kitts and Nevis is projected to continue on a path of positive economic growth in 2018. This would mean that for a fourth straight year, from 2015 to 2018, St. Kitts and Nevis’ economy would have registered growth under the Team Unity administration. The Prime Minister said this positive growth outlook comes despite the significant public sector damage to the tune of around $150 million from the two major hurricanes in September. This unprecedented level of consistent growth under the Team Unity Government is in stark contrast to the figures recorded by the former administration during its last term
in office. In 2010, 2011 and 2012 economic growth under the Denzil Douglas regime was negative, and for the period 2010-2014 economic growth was recorded at an average of just 1.4 percent. By Christian Gomez n the event that the United Kingdom is unable to work out or secure a new postBrexit trade deal with the European Union, it may consider joining the very trade pact that some in the United States are seeking their country’s own exit, or "Amexit" from — the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This news come from unnamed ministers in the British government, as reported by Britain’s Telegraph newspaper on October 10, 2017. According to the Telegrpah, “the [U.K.] Government is examining the possibility of joining the North American Free Trade Agreement, known as Nafta, as part of its planning for a ‘no deal’ scenario.” The Telegraph goes on to note the apparent economic benefits of the U.K. joining the United States, Mexico, and Canada in their trilateral trade pact: “Joining Nafta would enable the UK to boost its trade with three of the world’s economic powerhouses, which have a combined Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of £17.2 trillion [$22.7 trillion], compared with the EU’s GDP of £15.7 trillion [$20.7 trillion].” Currently, the four countries (including Britain) “account for more than 30 per cent of the entire global economy,” according to the Telegraph. Other advantages for why U.K. “free trade” globalists may want to join NAFTA include avoiding having to make individual trade agreements with the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Furthermore, with the U.K. in NAFTA, it would mean that three G7 nations — Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States — would also be members of NAFTA, thus giving that particular regional trade bloc increased leverage and among the G7.

eports from Yemen say ex-President Ali Abdullah Saleh has been killed in fighting with his former allies. Media controlled by the rebel Houthi movement quoted officials as declaring the "end of the crisis of the treason militia and the killing of its leader". Sources in Mr Saleh's General People's Congress party also confirmed that he was dead, according to Al Arabiya TV. Pictures and video circulated online showed the body of a man resembling Mr Saleh with a severe head wound. Until last week, Mr Saleh's supporters had been fighting alongside the Houthis in a war against Yemen's current president, Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi. But rising political tensions and a dispute over control of the main mosque in the rebel-controlled capital, Sanaa, triggered fierce clashes that have left more than 125 people dead and 238 wounded since Wednesday night.

LEGAL AFFAIRS Judge Rules That Foreign Entrepreneurs Can Come to the US to Grow Their Businesses
By Leslie Dellon oreign entrepreneurs who want to build innovative companies in the United States received good news on Friday, when federal judge James E. Boasberg of the U.S. District Court ruled in favor of a lawsuit brought by the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA), entrepreneurs, and startup companies on September 19, 2017. Represented by the American Immigration Council and Mayer Brown LLP, the plaintiffs’ lawsuit challenged the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) delay of the International Entrepreneur Rule
(IER). The rule was created to allow talented foreign-born entrepreneurs to travel to or stay in the United States to grow their companies for two and a half years, with the possible extension of another two and a half years. As a result of the agency’s delay, foreign entrepreneurs that intended to use the rule to grow businesses in the United States were blocked from doing so. NVCA and the other plaintiffs argued that because DHS did not solicit advance comment from the public on the delay, it violated the Administrative Procedure Act’s
requirements. The United States would consequently miss out on the economic activity that would have been generated by these new businesses. With Judge Boasberg’s ruling in place, DHS must now cease the delay and begin accepting applications of foreign entrepreneurs who wish to grow their companies in the United States. This will no doubt provide a significant boost to the U.S. economy, as it has long thrived on the contributions and innovations of foreign entrepreneurs.

A spike in applications before and after the 2016 presidential election has caused that wait time to double. Yet, immigrants by and large are not deterred from applying for citizenship. This sharp increase in the number of applications to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has also led to a backlog of 708,638 applications nationwide, new federal data shows. In Los Angeles County, for example, the uptick in applications has caused the processing time to shoot up from around five months to 10 months. The process itself has also gotten more laborious. Becoming a naturalized citizen would also allow them to bring family members into the United States, hold certain jobs that require citizenship, and protect them from the possibility of deportation. Backlogs and delays can cause great uncertainty, forcing immigrants to rearrange multiple aspects of their lives. The United States needs to continue to encourage immigrants who choose to naturalize and maintain a streamlined process to citizenship.

WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND he Windies lost eight wickets before tea in another disappointing collapse for the tourists, who were dismissed for 319 on Monday. West Indies crumbled dramatically as New Zealand won the first Test by an innings and 67 runs on day four in Wellington. The Windies lost eight wickets before tea in another disappointing collapse for the Caribbean tourists, who were dismissed for 319 on Monday. West Indies had shown signs of life on Sunday as they resumed on 214-2 – still 172 adrift of New Zealand's mammoth 386-run lead after the hosts declared on 520-9 – thanks to Kraigg Brathwaite (91) and Shai Hope (37) at Basin Reserve. But just like they did in the first innings, after going from 59-0 to all out for 134, the Windies capitulated as Matt Henry (3-57), Trent Boult (2-87), Colin de Grandhomme (2-40), Neil Wagner (2-102) and Mitchell Santner (1-25) tore through the visitors with ease. It went downhill for West Indies when Brathwaite's resistance was broken during the morning session.

Yorke must do more for Tobago sports
T
obago House of Assembly (THA) Secretary of Sports and Youth Affairs Jomo Pitt has called out former T&T international and Manchester United legend Dwight Yorke insisting the player should do more to help develop local sport. Yorke recently expressed dismay at comments made by Pitt in the THA, which suggested there were no plans to immediately renovate the badly dilapidated Dwight Yorke Stadium. Pitt, in response, while expressing disappointment in Yorke’s comments and insisting the comments made in the House of Assemble were taken out of context, turned to accuse the athlete of not doing enough to impact the sport’s development program. “We’ll be more interested in Dwight Yorke making a contribution to Tobago as opposed to facilities. We’re more interested in (enhancing) programmes and sports development as opposed to (improving) facilities – which has been sadly lacking from our international athletes, including Dwight Yorke,” Pitt told T&T Newsday.

Immigrants Arrested
N
ine Caribbean nationals were among 55 people arrested in New York as the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) executed a six-day operation targeting atlarge criminal aliens, illegal re-entrants, and immigration fugitives. They include a Guyanese national convicted of kidnapping, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon, a Trinidadian, two people from the Dominican Republic, and five Jamaicans. ICE said some of the foreign nationals will be presented for federal prosecution for re-entry after deportation, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Those not being criminally prosecuted will be processed for removal from the country. Individuals who have outstanding orders of deportation, or who returned to the United States illegally after being deported, are subject to immediate removal from the country. Thomas Decker, field office director for ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations New York said ICE “will be diligent in its responsibility to find those who come to the United States to prey upon our communities and ultimately have them removed from the country”. ERO deportation officers conducted enforcement actions in all boroughs of New York City, and Putnam and Westchester counties. They reported that Kings and Queens counties accounted for the largest number of arrests during the operation.

Las Vegas, Nevada: or the first time since 2010, Jamaica has secured a top 3 placement in the Miss Universe Pageant. Davina Bennett, 21 model and philanthropist finished in 3rd place at the final of the Miss Universe, which was held on Sunday (Nov 26) in Las Vegas. As her name was announced in third place, rounds of boos echoed in the background. A similar situation happened in 2014 when Jamaica's representative to the Miss Universe pageant, Kaci Fennell finished in 5th place. The winner of Miss Universe 2017 is South Africa's Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters. Her runner-up is Colombia's Laura Gonzalez. Thailand's Maria Poonlertlarp and Venezuela's Keysi Sayago completed the top 5. At the 2017 Miss Universe pageant, Bennett became the talk of the night for wearing an Afro. She stood out among the sea of blown-out, straight styles you typically see on beauty queens and was celebrated across social media for proudly wearing her natural hair. Bennett, who holds the title of Miss Universe Jamaica 2017, was selected as second runner-up from a total of 92 contestants from around the world. A native of Clarendon, she was chosen to represent Jamaica at the Miss Universe pageant in August 2017.
She is a marketing student at the University of the West Indies. Mona, and modeled for the Pulse agency at London’s Fashion Week. Davina is passionate about giving back and throughout her modeling career, she gained valuable experiences that paved the way for the Davina Bennett Foundation for the Deaf. She created the foundation to train and inspire models who are deaf, but it has
now grown to include a wider cross section of Jamaica's deaf community. If Davina takes home this year's crown, she would like to continue to working with the deaf community to help break the stigma of hearing loss. Jamaica's highest placement at the Miss Universe pageant came in 2010 when Yendi Phillips finished in 2nd place. Jamaica's previous top ten placements at Miss Universe included Sandra Foster (1989), Kimberly Mais (1991) Christine Straw (2004) and Nicole Haughton (1999).
5 tips for finding college scholarships
WWW.STREETHYPENEWSPAPER.COM
C
FAMILY FEATURES: ollege is a significant investment and millions of families each year face the question of how to pay for it. One way students can position themselves for success is by seeking out various forms of financial assistance. Earning scholarships can be one way to offset the financial burden, but winning a scholarship can sometimes be as competitive as gaining admission to the college of your choice. Some scholarships can be earned by meeting or exceeding certain standards, such as academic performance, while other scholarships are based on financial need or personal interests of the applicant. There’s also a wealth of opportunities that support students in specific areas, whether it be from companies, professional organizations or foundations. For example, the America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders program offers industry-specific scholarships each year for those looking to study agriculture-related fields. While your academic performance, character and extracurricular resume all play a part, knowing where to look for scholarships can make all the difference when it comes time to pay for your education. Complete the FAFSA Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may be required to apply for a number of scholarships, particularly scholarships offered by most colleges and

Many times, scholarships with smaller award amounts have fewer additional requirements that must be satisfied outside of materials traditionally required for submission such as transcripts, letters of reference and an application.
universities based on need. It is also required for other forms of financial aid, such as subsidized or unsubsidized loans. While you can begin filling out the FAFSA on Oct. 1 of the year prior to needing aid, many scholarships give priority to students who complete the FAFSA by their state’s application deadline. It is important to note that some colleges and universities have earlier deadlines. Talk to Your Counselor Colleges or universities and scholarship providers often supply information about their award offerings and applications to high school counselors. Many institutions also offer specific awards by major for both new and returning students that can be applied for through the school’s financial aid office.
Apply for Scholarships in Your Field of Interest Many job sectors have scholarship opportunities available through re-
lated clubs, organizations, small businesses and other benefactors. For example, the America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders program, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund in conjunction with the FFA, provides $1,500 scholarships to students endorsed by local farmers for continuing their education at two- or four-year universities and trade schools in agriculture-related fields of study. This year, the program will award more than $500,000 in scholarships to students in fields such as mathematics, computer science, business, communications, engineering, farming, agronomy, education and more.
Don’t Overlook Smaller Award Amounts When it comes to paying for your education, every scholarship you receive – even those that come with smaller, one-time award amounts – can help defray the costs beyond tuition for books, supplies and living expenses.
Use a Scholarship Search Engine While a simple search for “college scholarships” on any search engine is likely to elicit plenty of options, there are sites available that are dedicated to helping students identify college scholarship opportunities.
While paid options exist, there are also several free sites, such as Scholarships.com, Fastweb and Scholarship America, that can provide local, regional and national options based on the information you provide. Other, more industry-specific websites, such as FFA.org, can provide scholarship opportunities that pertain to a certain field of interest.

unning out of ideas to market your salon? We carefully crafted the best marketing techniques for the salon business. Here’s the ultimate list for marketing tips and ideas to promote your salon. • Create a profitable front desk. Train your staff to re-book clients for their next session. Teach your front desk what services to crosssell and up-sell. • Set up a selfie station with your salon’s hashtag. Set up a mirror in front of your chair, so clients can take a selfie and post it to social media. • Create a new, catchy hairstyle that clients will love. Differentiate yourself from the traditional salon. • Carry exclusive products. A great way to differentiate yourself from the competition is to carry products other salons don’t and are only distributed to salons. It will keep clients coming back. • Develop a relationship. Developing a long term relationship with a client will undeni-
• Offer add-on services. Ask your guest if they would like to try a hot oil treatment, in addition to the service they already booked.
ably help make a connection and win you a ‘lifetime’ guest who will also recommend your product. • Be price savvy. Price your services and products too low, and you’ll lose money. Price them too high, and you’ll lose clients. Be concise about your pricing. Offer 20% discount for friends and family (great way to market within the salon itself). • Be your own model. No one will want to get a haircut from someone with a bad one. Take time in the morning to make your hair look best. • Throw a contest. Let all your clients and their friends know that you are running a contest, where you’ll award the customer who sends the most referrals your way. The choice of the gift is yours.
This is called upselling.
• Hold a super sale. Hold a sale, maybe even just twice a year, where you let clients buy products and services for 30% off! Great way for a large turnout. • Display testimonials. Have a few stellar testimonials from satisfied clients displayed in your salon. Print it, frame it, and display it visibly to clients. • Offer a higher level of treatment. Offer scalp massage as an upgrade. A salon owner previously told us he made more tips from this little add-on service than stylists were making from their core service. Source: www.millenniumsi.com

Family Features: carefree summery style may appear effortless, but creating a look that stands up to a busy, fun-filled day still requires some simple work. Keep your skin in top condition and your hair and makeup on point with these tips from the beauty experts at Macy’s to help you look and feel your best. Protect your skin. If there's only one skin care product you use, it has to be sunscreen. Not only is daily SPF important for avoiding sunburns, it also helps prevent wrinkles and spots caused by sun damage. Apply early and often, and don’t be fooled by a cloudy day. Even when skies are overcast, those UV rays can inflict plenty of harm. If you’ll be out for an extended period, consider a stylish hat to lend extra protection to your scalp, ears and face. Also remember to cover or apply sun-
screen to often-overlooked places, such as the tops of your feet. Get that glow. While you're using sunscreen to prevent damage, adding a bronzer to your daily routine can help give you that sun-kissed glow. Preventing sun damage doesn’t have to mean looking less than golden. Create the look of healthy radiance with Clarins Sunkissed Summer Bronzer Compact. This trio of tropical leaf-embossed powders warms the complexion while an iridescent pop of coral brings a beachy glow to cheeks. Go for all-day eyes. When you’re embracing a laid-back look, a fully done eye can be overkill. A basic tint and some mascara is a simple way to achieve a put-together but fuss-free style. Using a waterproof formula can give you the confidence that your lashes are in perfect

21 yr old arrested in connection to Paterson shooting —————————
A
Paterson, NJ 21-year-old was arrested Saturday for his role in a shooting last month that left two people injured, officials said. Jonathan Cedeno, from Paterson, faces weapons and aggravated assault charges in relation to a shooting in the area of 620 Main Street in Paterson, the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office said in a news release. On Nov. 12, two male, Paterson residents, a 21-year-old and 27-year-old, were treated at Saint Joseph's Medical Center for non, life-threatening gunshot wounds. They both are believed to have been injured in the shooting near Main Street, according to the release. Cedeno was previously arrested on accusations that he was working with a drug ring that that dealt heroin in Paterson. The 4-year-old drug trafficking enterprise was known as the 4K Bloods/Korner Boyz.
TRENTON: ne of the first showdowns between Gov.-elect Phil Murphy and New Jersey Republicans could be the issue of legalizing recreational marijuana use. Republicans are now the minority in both houses of the New Jersey Legislature, which means they will lose the veto power that they had with Republican Gov. Chris Christie. State Senate Minority Leader Sen. Tom Kean Jr. says that he will have to work to get his party’s voices heard. “My goal is not to have my caucus be the party of, ‘No.’ There are too many talented individuals within that caucus,” he says.” The legalization of marijuana may be one such battle Republicans will fight against. Murphy made it one of his first campaign promises, in part for the revenue boost that taxing it will give the state. Murphy says that New Jersey can learn from other states that have already legalized marijuana to see what they did and did not do right.

PATH extension to Newark Liberty is now further down the track than it's ever been. What follows is a timeline of milestones
for the airport extension, which appears to have accelerated in recent years as the project has gained momentum.
PHIL MURPHY New Jersey Gov.-elect
Newark airport gets $1.7B extension
Newark, NJ: or decades since a newly created public entity known as the Port Authority TransHudson Corporation began operating the former Hudson & Manhattan Railroad in 1961, there has been sporadic talk of extending the commuter rail line to Newark airport. But the PATH extension to Newark Liberty International Airport was a train that never got out of the station. Until now, when the Port Authority is announcing to a broadening constituency for the project: All aboard! The project would extend the PATH line 2.4 miles west from its western terminus at Newark Penn Station to the airport, which is operated by PATH's parent agency, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Earlier this year, Port Authority commissioner included the $1.7 billion extension project in the agency’s $32 billion 10-year capital plan, and $15 million has been set aside in the agency's annual capital budget for 2018. The latest projected completion date is 2026. In authorizing the PATH extension, the Port Authority board capped spending of the agency's self-generated revenues at $1 billion, while stipulating that the remaining $700 million be paid for with grants. Pro or con, despite several other costly Port Authority projects in both states all vying for a limited number of agency dollars, the

“If you’ve got that driving social justice compelling argument, which we have…you can regulate it, you can keep it
out of the hands of minors, that’s a pretty compelling rationale,” he says. But even some Democrats have been hesitant on the issue, something Murphy says that he understands. But he so far has been keeping to all of his campaign promises. “There’s a visceral reaction to this… when I first thought about it I had a visceral reaction,” he says. “I have four kids…they are 20, 18, 16 and 14, so this is not something you get to lightly.” Murphy held the first of 14 advisory meetings Tuesday. Kean Jr. says that he is hoping to be included in these meetings. “Legalizing marijuana, at this time you’ve got concerns about crime issues. You’ve got concerns about the health impact; you’ve got concerns about a host of issues,” he says. Kean Jr. says that he has been in contact with the governor-elect, but has not yet met with him. Murphy will be sworn in to office Jan. 16.

What exactly is the best season for love?
18 • STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER • DEC 1-18, 2017
WWW.STREETHYPENEWSPAPER.COM
Though summer probably isn’t the best season for love, it still has its benefits. One benefit is the freedom to explore new hobbies. Michael F. Holick, Ph.D., M.D of the University of Michigan said that "Being outside readjusts your outlook. The sun represses melatonin levels, making you feel alert, open to new ideas, and willing to put yourself in unfamiliar territory." This spur of spontaneity gives you the opportunity to go on adventures and meet new and exciting people.
A
FALL: During the fall months, more singles were changing their status to "In a Relationship" and "Engaged". Fall proves to be a good time for love because we all want someone to spend winter and the holidays with. Date nights are even better in the fall. A recent study conducted by researchers at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology found that when the weather starts getting colder, our choice of movies starts to get warmer.
Men and women are more likely to choose romantic comedies during the frigid months due to the connection between physical and psychological sensations. Feeling cold results in the desire for warmth. We can now stop dreading the end of the exhilarating highs of summer and look forward to fall, where there’s a possibility of something even more magical to happen.
Attention: VIAGRA & CIALIS Users By Tabitha Blaisdell
lthough a relationship can spark during any season, is there a certain time of year where relationships blossom best and are most enduring? A true romantic would say no, but science says otherwise.
There’s a More Affordable & Effective Alternative to U.S. Pharmacy High Prices!
So what exactly is the best season for love?
WINTER: Although we all feel warm when cuddling with the person we love, winter can be a difficult time to find that special someone. This is due to the fact that we aren’t as sociable, are moodier and spend much more time indoors. Clinical psychologist Susan Davis, Ph.D. stated that "In the winter, we hurry home to our nests to stay warm and protected from the elements." According to the National Institutes of Health, there's also a link between mood changes and lack of sunlight during the cold season (as shorter days attribute to getting the "winter blues"). It's no surprise that being cooped up inside makes it harder to find the one.
SPRING: After shaking off the rough winter months, we welcome spring with open arms. When it comes to love, many feel that it's a tie on whether spring is a good time to start a new relationship or the best time to end one. According to marriage and family therapist Dr. Jane Greer, we hold on to relationships during the harsh winter months "even if it's not exactly what [we] want it to be [because] it's too dark to start something new". This changes in the springtime when the warmer weather alleviates our mood and boosts our confidence.
SUMMER: Summer doesn’t exactly have the best reputation for the starting point of a relationship. According to anthropologist Helen Fisher, one of the reasons why summer romances rarely last are because we’re constantly on the go; "summer is a time when we’re off, we’re traveling, and we’re not part of our communities."

he social media giant is launching a messaging app for children to chat with their parents and with friends approved by their parents. The free app is aimed at kids under 13, who can't yet have their own accounts under Facebook's rules, though they often do. Messenger Kids comes with a slew of controls for parents. The service won't let children add their own friends or delete messages— only parents can do that. Kids don't get a separate Facebook or Messenger account; rather, it's an extension of a parent's account. While children do use messaging and social media apps designed for teenagers and adults, those services aren't built for them, said Kristelle Lavallee, a children's psychology expert who advised Facebook on designing the service. "The risk of exposure to things they were not developmentally prepared for is huge," she said. Messenger Kids, meanwhile, "is a result of seeing what kids like," which is images, emoji and the like. Face filters and playful masks can be distracting for adults, Lavallee said, but for kids who are just learning how to form relationships and stay in touch with parents digitally, they are ways to express themselves. their parents and with friends approved by their parents. The free app is aimed. Lavallee, who is content strategist at the Center on Media and Child Health at Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard University, called Messenger Kids a "useful tool" that "makes parents the gatekeepers." But she said that while Facebook made the app "with the best of intentions," it's not yet known how people will actually use it. As with other tools Facebook has released in the past, intentions and real-world use do not always match up. Facebook's live video streaming feature, for example, has been used for plenty of innocuous and useful things, but also to stream crimes and suicides. Stephen Balkam, CEO of the nonprofit Family Online Safety Institute, said "that train has left the station."

Health tips for the holidays
N
BY ANGELA DARLING Advocate, Health Educator, Humanitarian
ovember starts the ball rolling for the holidays with Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year. Enjoy yourselves with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc. As we celebrate, there's a whole lot of eating, drinking and stress of shopping, decorating, driving for some and flying for others. Sadly this is the season for heart attacks. There's an estimated 350,000 combined of men/women who will die from a heart attack. Researchers say 90% of heart attacks can be prevented. Let us be mindful and remember everything in moderation. On an average, we gain over one pound during the holiday season, and it usually hangs around till we approach Spring and Summer. Here are some of the following risk factors for a heart attack: 1. Smoking and just one cigarette increase the risk by 40% so can you imagine individuals who smoke two or more packs a day? 2. Stress doubles the risk and is even higher when it is continuous either at home or the workplace. 3. Inadequate intake of fruits and vegetables. 4. Lack of exercise and living a sedentary lifestyle. 5. High cholesterol
6. High blood pressure of which the American Heart Association recommends changes to high blood pressure. No longer is it 140/90 the revised level is now 130/80. At this level we are borderline and your MD should monitor you and may have to start medication to prevent down the road a heart attack or stroke. Everyone should have a blood pressure monitor at home to follow up on your levels in addition to MD visits. 7. Diabetes- we must be mindful of our A1C levels which can be the precursor to Type 2 Diabetes. We do not want the A1C level of 7 or higher. 8. Abdominal Obesity- this not only increases the risk of heart attack but also the risk of breast cancer. Preferably women's waistline should be around 32 inches and for men 34-36 inches. Weight loss and exercise can be a good addition to your lifestyle to help control cholesterol levels and blood sugar levels. It won't hurt to ask your MD about starting low-dose (81mg) aspirin therapy. If yes, never take on an empty stomach for we do not need any G I bleeding. Heart Attack Warning Signs Are Different For Women: Researchers say a woman may begin to experience warning symptoms even more than a month before they have an attack. The following are the top signals. The number one symptom is overwhelming fatigue, exhaustion, also when getting adequate sleep. Other symptoms are shortness of breath, sleep disturbance, i.e., waking up from a deep sleep unable to catch your breath. This experience can also be related to sleep apnea. Indigestion, nausea, abdominal pain and we figure it's just gas, heartburn or food poisoning. Anxiety and chest discomfort, tightness in the chest. See your medical doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Our bodies talk to us, and at times we just need to slow down, and maybe ever so often just say NO! Advocate for yourself! Listen to intuition! Take care of you, for you are #1 Love You Guys! Abundant Blessings Always,

Build a business your way Highlighting the opportunities and challenges of local business

FAMILY FEATURES: reating a business from the ground up is no small endeavor. From planning to financing to putting standard business services in place, there’s a lot to tackle. All of that is in addition to operating the day-to-day business. To overcome these obstacles, franchising is an ideal solution for many aspiring business owners. It provides the advantages of business ownership, but with the added support of a recognized brand and an established method of doing business. Partnering with a franchise like The UPS Store offers numerous benefits. Flexibility. Opening a franchise allows you to enjoy the freedom and flexibility of making your own business decisions and being your own boss, while working toward your goals of personal and financial independence at your own pace. Start-up resources. Getting a new business off the ground requires a wide range of activity, from site selection and lease negotiation to hiring and training staff. A franchise can help you navigate these early decisions and needs with a deep pool of experience and knowledge to help overcome the hurdles you may encounter. Training. Even a well-educated business owner has room to learn. With a franchise, you have the opportunity to receive in-depth training in areas such as business operations, technical systems, human resources, marketing and financial management. Networking opportunities. Connecting with other franchisees at area meetings, regional conferences and national conventions
helps you stay informed of industry trends, discover new tools and resources, and develop lasting relationships with fellow franchisees. The result is a peer group that has intimate knowledge of your business model that can serve as a valuable resource as your business grows. Product development. Part of developing your business is understanding your customers’ needs and introducing new products and solutions.
As a franchise owner, you can contribute insight to the process but focus on running your business while development experts dedicate themselves to researching and innovating new products and services that can help you better serve your customers. Marketing support. Many franchises conduct national advertising campaigns to build brand awareness, while regional efforts and local store marketing can build excitement in your market. A layered marketing plan ex-
tends the reach of your marketing budget and lends credibility to your business. Financing assistance. Funding your franchise according to your unique goals and background can help eliminate many of the financial pitfalls that those without experience or industry expertise may encounter. Learn more about franchising and the options available to aspiring small business owners at TheUPSStoreFranchise.com. A Milestone Accomplishment A focus on small business is driving big results for one national retailer. The nation’s largest franchise system of retail shipping, print and business service centers, The UPS Store, Inc., is now 5,000 locations strong. “The UPS Store network is made up of dedicated individuals and families who are committed to serving small business owners, customers and their communities,” said Chris Adkins, vice president of franchise development for The UPS Store. “We look forward to welcoming more franchisees into our network as we continue to challenge ourselves to find new ways we can bring convenience and value to our customers.” Over the years, the retail concept has expanded to include a range of solutions for small business owners, creating a one-stop shop for small-business support. Small business owners can find resources such as notary services, shredding, mailbox and locker rental, and, in some cases, even inventory management solutions, as well as the packing and shipping services that business and non-business customers alike can utilize.
Don’t Fall Victim to Financial Distress Caused by Credit Card Debt Credit counseling is the easiest, most effective way to explore the options for credit card debt and identify the best solution for your needs.
HIGH MONTHLY CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS combined with even higher interest rates can make it almost impossible to maintain control over your credit card debt. Even with your monthly payments you may not see much of a reduction in debt no matter what you do. What’s more, as your credit card balances increase, it can also cause problems for your budget – you end up juggling bills, choosing between expenses, and putting off important purchases. Luckily, there’s a way you can find the solution that works for your unique financial situation – and even better, it won’t cost a thing to get the information you need.
CREDIT COUNSELING IS THE EASIEST, MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO EXPLORE THE OPTIONS FOR CREDIT CARD DEBT AND IDENTIFY THE BEST SOLUTION FOR YOUR NEEDS. Speak with a certified credit counselor at no charge to analyze your debt and budget. They will review your options to see what solutions may work best for you. Your credit counselor may be able to lower high interest rates or even eliminate them while consolidating your credit card debts into one easy payment through a debt management program. Get Out of Debt Faster As a result of those lower interest rates – more of your monthly pay-
ments go toward your debt instead of adding more interest – which means you can get out of debt faster. Every financial situation is different, but most people see their total monthly debt payments reduced by up to 30 to 50 percent as they get out of debt faster. The program is usually completed in around 40-60 payments, so you can be debt-free in just a few years instead of taking decades to eliminate everything you owe.
It’s the fastest and easiest to get professional financial advice without incurring another bill to do it. Build a Positive Credit History Additionally, consolidating debtthrough a certified credit counseling service may help save your credit score from additional damage. You stop future penalties and prevent further damage from missed payments and overdrawn credit lines. Even better, as you work your way through the program,
you’re able to build a positive credit history while reducing your overall debt level. As a result, some people see their credit score even increase over the course of their time with a credit counseling service. FREEDOM FROM DEBT IS POSSIBLE! Don’t spend another sleepless night worrying about your debt problems, or another day stressed about your bills instead of focused on your family and life.

22 • STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER • DEC 1-18, 2017 AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): "To fight or not to fight" may be the question of the day for you. Your sensitive, feminine side is likely to say one thing while your masculine, warring side is apt to say another. The key is for you to not act too hastily in any situation.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): New friends could come your way today, and you might well feel that you've known them all your life. Close bonds may be formed quickly, as communication flows freely between you. Make sure, however, that you don't make too many commitments to anyone at this time, as you could spread yourself too thin, and you also aren't in the proper frame of mind to discriminate.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Seek the counsel of someone older and wiser today. Whether you want to or not, you just may encounter someone with authority over you who is likely to tell you how they think. Heed the advice that comes to you from others. You will find that there is a whole other perspective out there that needs to be taken into account in order to bring things back to a status of equilibrium. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Some close friends, or perhaps the man in your life, may suddenly propose taking a trip together - definitely by air, and possibly to a distant state or country. You like to be spontaneous, and are therefore open to the possibility and ready to make definite plans. Make sure, however, that the others involved are really serious about it before you charge on

CANCER (June 21-July 22): There is a practical grounding to the day that may be cramping your style. More than likely, you will feel restrained by the restriction of time that is asking you to be more aware of your own limits. It could be that you are not being realistic about certain areas of your life. These things will become clear today as things progress.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): You could be feeling sluggish today. Your desk could be piled high with papers that need attending to. No matter how much you push yourself, it still could be difficult to get everything done. Try to be realistic and just focus on the tasks that need to be finished today. Other, less essential things, you might want to leave for tomorrow.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Today you might have to focus on your obligations to other people. Maybe you should spend some time babysitting. You might enjoy taking care of your niece or your nephew for a bit. Or your spouse might need your help with something around the house. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You might not see eye-to-eye with someone today. Sometimes you can get swept up in passionate opinions. It's easy for you to believe that your way is right and the other person's way is wrong! But things aren't quite so black and white right now. Today you might need to look for gray areas.
