merican businessman and television personality Donald Trump has been sworn in as the 45th president of the United States, while anti-Trump protesters clashed with police in the capital.

The number of protests against and rallies for Trump taking place last Friday is far above what has been typical at recent US presidential inaugurations. In Washington DC, protesters were pepper-sprayed by police officers in sporadic clashes. About 28,000 security personnel, kilometres of fencing, street barricades, and trucks laden with sand were part of the security cordon around eight-square kilometres of central Washington for the ceremony. Give Trump a chance, but hold him accountable

W

ithin days of taking charge of the world's richest country, US President Donald Trump continues to face strong opposition, including street marches and rallies of civil right, political and heavy criticism from the media. Despite winning 30 states with a total of 306 electoral votes, after breaking through in traditionally Democratic states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, Trump unfavorable ratings average over 50 percent in most polls. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by more than 2.8 million. However, Trump is the duly elected president by virtue of the electoral college votes. Mass protesting in the US and overseas will not change the status of the presidency. During the presidential elections, under the slogan, “Make America Great Again,” Trump’s comments upset a wide range of people, including women and members of his own Republican

Party. But the controversial businessman has insisted that he was speaking for ordinary Americans and promised to "drain the swamps" once he got to Washington. A few days since taking office, President Trump has been making good on his promises and has already signed several executive actions in keeping with his “Contract with the American Voters.” But it was the executive order he signed Friday (Jan. 27) banning entry by nationals from certain countries that has led to lawsuits and sparked protests across the United States and overseas. It prohibits people from seven countries—Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen—from entering the U.S. for 90 days and pauses the admission into the U.S. of people granted refugee status for 120 days while the Trump administration reviews immigration screening procedures.

patrick@streethype.net

It is fair to say millions of immigrants are very distressed, but these were the same strategies used by the Obama administration that led to more than two millions people being deported. President Trump has also ordered that federal dollars cannot go to organizations that provide abortion services. This is

not an area the president should interfere with, or take broadbrush approaches to cut funding. After all, abortion should remain a woman’s right. And the much talk about border wall with Mexico is on the card as Trump states it is the policy of the United States to immediately construct a wall on the southern border. While millions of Americans are very upset with most of the executive orders issued by the president, we must be reminded that those actions were among his (Trump) election promises to the voters. However, the president should exercise more sensitivity, especially when dealing with immigrants. In spite of these actions and with only several days in office, we must give the president a chance to govern. However, we should continue to be vigilant and honest to ensure that the executives order are in the longterm good of America.

A few tips to communicate and negotiate

ere are few tips to communicate and negotiate your way to success when doing business globally. Take the pulse of the area's intellectual climate by finding out what people are reading and watching. Some embassies websites are very informative. Before I went to work in Saudi Arabia, I reviewed the embassy’s website including the culture mission. I wanted to know the do’s and don't of working as a female in Saudi. Study the established business norms of the area. Understand business, political, & cultural environments. Don’t jump to assumptions and conclusions in the negotiation process. Think about possible cultural reasons behind the behavior and try not to rationalize according to your own view of the world. If you sense confusion always clarify and re-check for understanding... Think how you would feel being in another country trying to negotiate in another language. Who makes the decisions tends to differ from culture to culture. In more hierarchical countries, it is usually always the boss who has the final say. If you are working across cultures and genders, make sure you are fully aware of any sen-

sitivity. Some Muslims tend not to shake hands with the opposite sex (tell the story of friend shaking hands). In some cultures, they may assume that the woman present is not of important..., in reality, they may be the decision maker. Lastly, keep it professional no matter how challenging it may get – even if the negotiations are testing your patience always remain courteous and keep it to business. Some cultures like to test the other person’s trustworthiness. If you are not familiar with culture, employ an agents or advisors or get trained.

NEWS Outpouring of criticism over Trump'sexecutive orders WWW.STREETHYPENEWSPAPER.COM

President Donald Trump signs executive orders

P

President Trump executive orders

resident Trump has taken 10 executive actions since entering office. They largely fall in line with the “Contract with the American Voter” blueprint his campaign released last October, which laid out Trump’s vision for his first 100 days in office. Here’s the list of Trump’s executive actions so far, starting with the most recent. 12. Border wall. In this order, President Trump states it is the policy of the United States to immediately construct a wall on the southern border. The order directs agencies to begin planning and identify funding for the project, including sending requests to Congress. It also directs agencies to construct or contract out for more detention facilities at or near the Mexican border. This order also directs the hiring of an additional 5,000 border patrol agents, subject to funding. And it requires that all agencies identify any U.S. aid funds that have gone to Mexico in the past five years. (We are still awaiting an online link and will post when it appears.) 11. Deportations and sanctuary cities. This is also a longer order with several major pieces (as above, no public link yet). The president has directed agencies to step up deportation of those in the country illegally. First, he prioritizes seven groups of people for deportation. It is anyone: convicted of a crime, charged with a crime, who has committed a chargeable offense, has misrepresented themselves to the government, has abused a welfare program, who is under deportation order and who may “in the judgment of an immigration officer, otherwise pose a risk to public safety or national security.” Second, the order also directs the hiring of 10,000 more Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, though it states that is subject to funding. Third, it states the U.S. policy is now to allow local law enforcement officers to act as immigration officers whenever possible. Fourth, it orders the Attorney General and Secretary of Homeland Security to block federal grants from so-called “sanctuary” cities which do not enforce some immigration laws. 10. Review manufacturing regulations. In this memorandum, the president ordered the Commerce Secretary to begin a 60-day review of regulations for American manufacturers, with the aim of finding ways to speed up permitting and all federal processes for them.

9. American steel in pipelines. President Trump directed the Commerce Secretary to come up with a plan to ensure that all pipelines built or repaired in the United States be constructed with American-made materials “to the maximum extent possible.” 8. Speeding up environmental reviews for all priority infrastructure. President Trump ordered that agencies and the chairman of the White House Council on Environmental Quality work together to set up faster deadlines and environmental approval for “high priority” infrastructure projects. It gives significant power and responsibility to the White House Council on Environmental Quality chairman, who will decide within 30 days if a proposed project is “high priority.” (The president has not yet nominated a new CEQ chairman.) 6 + 7. Speeding approval of Dakota Access and Keystone Oil Pipelines. President Trump ordered that permits for the the Dakota Access Pipeline be approved in an expedited manner, “including easements or rights-of-way to cross Federal areas.” (Army denial of an easement was a previous victory for pipeline opponents.) In his Keystone memorandum, Mr. Trump invited TransCanada to resubmit its application for a pipeline permit, and he directed the State Department to issue a final decision on that application within 60 days. 5. Federal hiring freeze. The president has told agencies they cannot fill any vacant positions nor open new ones, with two exceptions: military personnel and critical public safety positions. 4. TPP. This memorandum withdraws the United States from all Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations and from signing the trade deal. 3. Abortion. President Trump has ordered that federal dollars cannot go to organizations that provide abortion services. 2. Regulation freeze. The president has frozen all regulations now in process (but not approved) until they are approved by him or an agency after he took office. This means any regulation signed by former President Barack Obama in his final weeks in office — including some that deal with energy efficiency standards — are on hold until they’re reviewed by Trump’s administration. 1. ACA rollback. Mr. Trump has allowed all agency heads to waive requirements of the Affordable Care Act to the “maximum extent permitted by law.”

“There are unfortunately periods in our history when the United States has departed from that proud tradition, as when Japanese Americans were forced into internment camps durYvette D. Clarke ing the Second World Congresswoman War and when strict limits were placed on immigration from Eastern and Southern Europe in 1924 based on irrational fears about Catholic and Jewish influence on American culture. “We cannot as a nation allow xenophobia to undermine our principles or racism to determine our policies. There are more than three million Muslim Americans living here today. These are the same individuals who have volunteered for service in the Armed Forces. These same individuals are our neighbors and friends. I will never accept this attack on Muslim families as the policy of the United States. I will resist, and I call on my colleagues in Congress and people of good faith across the United States to join me in resistance to this act of hate.” ---------------------“I strongly rebuke President Trump’s decision to strip millions of federal dollars from our city, and cities across America, for their lawful decision to protect immigrants Eric L. Adams within their borders. Brooklyn President

As a member of our law enforcement community, I know firsthand how New York City has proven its ability to keep its residents safe from illegal criminals while protecting innocent children and families fearing for their lives. We must not allow a tsunami of xenophobia to wash away centuries of our nation’s legacy as a beacon of diversity and opportunity. I ask New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman to do everything in his power to fight this executive order, on behalf of all New Yorkers. ----------------------------------------------"Today we showed the best of America," Council Member Williams said. For the past two years we've been bombarded by divisive messages that were unfortunately embraced by so many, Jumaane Williams and the resulting elecCouncil Member tion showed us the worst of America. "I am a believer in nonviolent resistance, but we have to disrupt a structure that is unjust. We must resist from day one. We're fighting for everyone, even those who don't understand what they've done by voting for Trump. We are going to continue moving forward because we know we are on the right side of history." The theme of the rally was "resist from day one" -- resisting Trump's proposals, which are based in bigotry, xenophobia and fear.

Tax Return Western Union to pay $586M Preparer fine to settle fraud charges Pleads Guilty T to Fraud A former Queens, tax return preparer pleaded last guilty on Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York to aiding and assisting in the preparation of false income tax returns. According to documents filed with the court, from in or about 2004 through 2014, Vanya Thompson, 39, ran a tax return preparation business, which operated under a number of names, including Lyn Services, Ricardo Multi-Service and Katie’s Multi-Service. To generate larger refunds for her clients, Thompson falsified items on their returns such as charitable deductions and business income, expenses, and losses, causing a tax loss of more than $250,000. Sentencing is scheduled for June 2. Thompson faces a statutory maximum sentence of three years in prison, a period of supervised release, restitution and monetary penalties. Thompson also agreed to an order prohibiting her from preparing tax returns on behalf of others. “As we enter filing season, today’s plea should remind tax return preparers across the country that there are significant consequences for willfully preparing and filing false income tax returns,” said Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Goldberg. “Preparers who seek to attract business and increase their profits by stealing from the U.S. Treasury through the filing of false returns will be investigated and prosecuted.” Acting Deputy Assistant Attorney General Goldberg thanked special agents of IRS-Criminal Investigation, who conducted the investigation, and Trial Attorneys Brittney Campbell and Jason Scheff of the Tax Division, who are prosecuting the case. Additional information about the Tax Division and its enforcement efforts may be found on the division’s website.

By Stephen Feller, UPI he largest money service business in the world agreed on Thursday to a half-billion dollar settlement over charges they failed to protect customers from fraud and permitted their agents to illegally launder money for customers. Western Union will pay a $586 million fine after pleading guilty to charges of willfully failing to run an effective anti-money laundering program and aiding and abetting wire fraud with the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Trade Commission and the U.S. Attorneys' Offices of the Middle and Eastern districts of Pennsylvania, Central District of California and Southern District of Florida. "Western Union owes a responsibility to American consumers to guard against fraud, but instead the company looked the other way, and its system facilitated scammers and ripoffs," FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez said in a press release. "The agreements we are announcing today will ensure Western Union changes the way it conducts its business and provides more than a half billion dollars for refunds to consumers who were harmed by the company's unlawful behavior." Based on a complaint filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, Western Union violated U.S. laws when they processed thousands of transactions for Western Union agents and others as part of multiple national and international fraud schemes.

Trump Takes Charge Amid Protests

Continued from page 1 The night before Friday's inauguration, thousands of people turned out in New York for a protest rally at the Trump International Hotel and Tower, and then marched a few blocks from where the businessman lives. The rally featured a line-up of politicians, activists, and celebrities. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, Hollywood actors Robert de Niro and Alec Baldwin, Oscarwinning documentary director Michael Moore and singer Cher were among those who joined the noisy gathering. Moore, an Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker, exhorted the crowd to take part in "100 days of resistance", a movement to resist Trump's policies. "As bad we think it's going to be, it's going to be worse. But the good news is there's more of us than there are of them." In a call for unity Moore said: "We're all Muslim. We're all Mexican. We're all women. We're all American. Yes, and we are all queer, too." Donald John Trump is an American businessman, television personality, politician, and the 45th President of the United States. He was born on June 14, 1946 in Queens, New York. He has five children and is married to Melanija Knavs, a Slovene American former model.

Among the allegations are criminals who contacted victims in the United States posing as family members, potential employers or people awarding some kind of prize asking for money to be wired to them. The company's agents were often complicit in the schemes, the FTC said, and sometimes took a cut of the money. Previous cases have also established that Western Union failed to halt the transfer of hundreds of millions of dollars to human traffickers in China and drug traffickers in other parts of the world, as well as not adhering to

laws requiring verification and investigation of daily transfer limits. The settlement requires Western Union to block money transfers to any person who is the subject of a fraud report, provide clear warnings to consumers about fraud on their paper and electronic forms, refund fraudulently induced money transfers if the company did not follow proper anti-fraud protocol and to increase the availability for how consumers can file fraud complaints. Western Union will also be monitored by an independent auditor for its adherence to the telemarketing sales rule, which bars companies from processing transfers known to be fraud, or those the company "should know is payment for a telemarketing transaction." Western Union said in a press release it has increased compliance consistently during the last five years and has dedicated about 20 percent of its employees to compliance functions, noting the issues it settled Thursday occurred mostly between 2004 and 2012. "We share the government's goal of protecting consumers and the integrity of our global money transfer network, and we worked hard to resolve these matters with the government," Western Union said in the release. "We are committed to enhancing our compliance programs to prevent illicit activity on our network and protect customers who transfer money to friends, family and businesses."

Venezuela cannot afford to export its oil

Caribbean Nations with The Fattest People

A

M

By Caribbean News Now contributor CARACAS, Venezuela: ore than four million barrels of Venezuelan crude oil and fuel exports are stuck in tankers in the Caribbean because Venezuela’s state-run oil firm Petróleos de Venezuela SA (PDVSA) cannot afford to pay for cleaning dirty tankers and port inspections, Reuters reported. According to PDVSA’s trade documents and Reuters shipping data, some 12 tankers full of around 1.4 million barrels of crude oil, diesel, fuel oil, gasoline, and LPG were anchored in Venezuelan and Caribbean waters and were waiting to be cleaned. In addition, another 11 vessels full of oil and oil products have been retained or embargoed by port authorities, maritime agencies and inspection firms because PDVSA has not paid its bills. The 11 tankers and a few smaller vessels held for other operational delays contain a total of 2.9 million barrels of crude and fuels, Reuters data showed. Maritime laws do not allow dirty tankers to travel through international waters. PDVSA generates almost all of the export revenues for Venezuela. --------------------------------

Opposition leader hopes Trump can solve Trinidad and Tobago's US tax law stalemate

T

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: he Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), which was enacted by the US Congress in 2010, seeks to ensure that US citizens and residents with financial assets outside of the country are paying taxes. Regarded as an invasive law, there has been some resistance to it; however, many countries have signed on -- but Trinidad and Tobago is not yet one of them. There was great online discontent when the country missed its September 30, 2016, deadline, thanks to the opposition stalling the legislation's passage in parliament. At the time, opposition leader Kamla PersadBissessar explained that she and her colleagues were concerned about “the draconian provisions in the Bill”. The government maintained that they addressed these concerns, but since the opposition walked out of parliament -- a move they deemed deliberate -- the matter was never debated. The public response was one of frustration, especially since the opposition introduced the legislation to parliament when they were in government. In a country where corruption is endemic, FATCA, netizens believed, could help ensure transparency in financial transactions. Business owners wanted to be able to trade with the United States free of any impediments and the banking sector was heavily lobbying for the country's compliance.

Cayman Islands cuts mosquitoes by over 80 percent with Genetic Modification

T

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: here has been a dramatic fall in the number of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the West Bay of Grand Cayman, where genetically modified insects have been released in a pilot project to get as near as possible to eradicating the disease-spreading pest in the Cayman Islands. Over the last six months the Mosquito Research and Control Unit (MRCU), in partnership with a private UK bio-technology firm Oxitec, has released millions of genetically altered male insects in a selected area of West Bay, where the population has now fallen by almost 90% when compared to

nearby areas where the GM insects were not released. Preliminary results published this week revealed that the Aedes aegypti population in the project area is now just 12% of the numbers found in the comparative non-treatment study area also in West Bay. The technique involves releasing large numbers of sterile engineered male mosquitoes into an area with a wild population to mate with the females. Then, as almost all of the larvae die before reaching maturity and because the life-cycle of a mosquito is short, it’s not long before the population begins to fall.

Health experts blamed processed and junk foods and consumption of foods high in sugar for the epidemic. “The alarming rates of overweight and obesity in Latin America and the Caribbean should act as a wake up call to governments in the region to introduce policies that address all forms of hunger and malnutrition by linking food security, sustainability, agriculture, nutrition and health,” said FAO’s Regional Representative Eve Crowley.

Trump Immigration Order 'Unconstitutional,' Creating 'Chaos' -Says Schneiderman

ew York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman was among 16 attorney generals from the United States who called President Donald Trump's executive order issued Friday on immigration "unconstitutional," saying it has created "chaos," while vowing to fight it. Fifteen other attorney generals joined Schneiderman in condemning the order Trump signed on Friday in a statement released Sunday afternoon. Trump's controversial order blocks for 90 days entry into the U.S. for citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, suspended for 120 days entry of all refugees and banned Syrian refugees indefinitely. “As the chief legal officers for over 130 million Americans and foreign residents of our states, we condemn President Trump's unconstitutional, un-American and unlawful executive order and will work together to ensure the federal government obeys the Constitution, respects our history as a nation of immigrants, and does not unlawfully target anyone because of their national origin or faith," the statement said. "Religious liberty has been, and always will be, a bedrock principle of our country and no president can change that truth." Gov. Andrew Cuomo also voiced disapproval of Trump's order. "I never thought I'd see the day when refugees, who have fled war-torn countries in search of a better life, would be turned away at our doorstep," Cuomo said. "We are a nation of bridges, not walls, and a great many of us still believe in the words 'give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses." Cuomo said he's directed the Port Authority, the Department of State, and my Counsel's Office to jointly explore all legal options to assist anyone detained at New York airports, and ensure that their rights are protected.

"America is a nation of laws and those laws provide rights that must be respected and followed regardless of political ideology," Cuomo said. The other attorney generals joining Schneiderman are from Connecticut, California, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Maryland, Iowa, New Mexico, Virginia, Oregon, Hawaii, the District of Columbia and Washington state. "Yesterday, multiple federal courts ordered a stay of the Administration’s dangerous executive order," the statement read. Bolt loses one Olympic gold medal as Carter tests positive

Kingston, Jamaica WI: sain Bolt will have to hand back one of his nine Olympic gold medals after Jamaican team-mate Nesta Carter tested positive for a banned substance. Carter was part of the Jamaican quartet that won the 4x100m in Beijing in 2008. His was one of 454 selected doping samples retested by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) last year, and has been found to contain the banned stimulant methylhexaneamine. Bolt, 30, completed an unprecedented 'triple triple' in Rio last summer. He won gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay to add to his successes in the same events in 2008 and 2012. Carter, 31, was also part of the squad that won the event in London five years ago

and helped Jamaica win at the World Championships in 2011, 2013 and 2015. He ran the first leg for Jamaica's 4x100m relay team in Beijing, which also included Michael Frater, Asafa Powell and Bolt. The team won in a then-world record of 37.10 seconds, ahead of Trinidad and Tobago and Japan, who could have their medals upgraded. Brazil would then receive bronze. The head of the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association, Dr Warren Blake, said he did not expect the whole team to be penalised: "I didn't rule out he'd be found guilty but my personal opinion is that I'm surprised they'd go that route." Carter's lawyer has confirmed that the sprinter will lodge an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH Origins of Black History Month Mayor Thomas congratulates B Denzel Washington on record-setting win 10 • STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER • FEB 1-18, 2017

lack History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating black history. The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by black Americans and other peoples of African descent. Known today as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs and host performances and lectures. In the decades the followed, mayors of cities across the country began issuing yearly proclamations recognizing Negro History Week. By the late 1960s, thanks in part to the Civil Rights Movement and a growing awareness of black identity, Negro History Week

had evolved into Black History Month on many college campuses. President Gerald R. Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” Since then, every American president has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme. The 2013 theme, At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington, marks the 150th and 50th anniversaries of two pivotal events in African-American history.

f gift-giving isn’t your strong suit, occasions like Valentine’s Day are likely to bring on stress and worry, but procrastinating will only serve to elevate your unease. Follow these steps to simplify your shopping, and while you may not come to love the task of finding the perfect gift, your loved one will undoubtedly appreciate your effort.

5. Go ahead, gift yourself. It may

seem counter-intuitive, but finding a gift you’ll enjoy may inspire an idea for your loved one. tising industry works hard to convince consumers otherwise, Valentine’s Day isn’t really all about the bling. Sure, a pretty bauble is a welcome gift, but there are plenty of ways to show your affection that don’t require spending a month’s salary. A heartfelt card paired with a memento of a meaningful event or place in your relationship sends the same loving sentiment.

ABOUT VALENTINE’S DAY

E

ach year on February 14th, many people exchange cards, candy, gifts or flowers with their special “valentine.” The day of romance we call Valentine’s Day is named for a Christian martyr and dates back to the 5th century, but has origins in the Roman holiday Lupercalia. Valentine's Day is a time to celebrate romance and love and kissy-face fealty. But the origins of this festival of candy and cupids are actually dark, bloody — and a bit muddled. Though no one has pinpointed the exact origin of the holiday, one good place to start is ancient Rome, where men hit on women by, well, hitting them. From Feb. 13 to 15, the Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia. The men sacrificed a goat and a dog, then whipped women with the hides of the animals they had just slain. The Roman romantics "were drunk. They were naked," says Noel Lenski, a historian at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Young women would actually line up for the men to hit them, Lenski says. They believed this would make them fertile. The brutal fete included a matchmaking lottery, in which young men drew the names of women from a jar. The couple would then be, um, coupled up for the duration of the festival — or longer, if the match was right.

Free Tax Prep Opening at Brooklyn Borough Hall

T

BROOKLYN: he largest non-paid tax preparer in the Brooklyn was recently officially opened at Brooklyn Borough Hall. The NYC Free Tax Prep site is reminding the roughly 1.1 million eligible New Yorkers to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). With around 325,000 returns claiming the EITC in 2015, according to the IRS and Brookings Institution, Kings County has more residents claiming the credit than any other county in New York State and is amongst the highest in the nation. EITC is a Federal, State and City tax credit for qualifying families, non-custodial parents (NYS EITC only), and singles who work full time or part time or are self-employed. For working families in New York City, federal EITC claims average $2,411 ($2,484 in Brooklyn) and can be worth as much as $8,463 when combined with state and City credits. DCA Commissioner Salas and Borough President Adams also encouraged New Yorkers who earned $64,000 or less, especially the 74 percent of EITC filers in Brooklyn who have previously paid a tax preparer, to file for free using NYC Free Tax Prep. Beginning on Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Borough President Adams, in partnership with Grow Brooklyn’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, is offering a number of free tax preparation sessions for eligible residents, including single filers who earned $30,000 a year or less, filers with dependents who earned under $55,000 a

year, and filers that are self-employed with expenses of $5,000 or less. Appointments are also available from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17, Friday, February 24, and Monday, April 17, as well as from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, Thursday, March 23, Thursday, April 6, and Thursday, April 13. Those seeking more information are asked to call (347) 682-5606 or visit growbrooklyn.org. Filers should bring a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or IDNYC; Social Security Numbers (SSNs) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) and birth dates for themselves and all individuals on their return; all relevant tax forms (W-2, 1099-R, etc.), or income and expense records for those who are self-employed; their 2015 tax return, if available; proof of health insurance cover-

age or Health Insurance Exemption Certificate for the records of cash and non-cash charitable contributions; documentation of higher education expenses; child care expenses and provider information, as well as bank account numbers and routing numbers for direct deposit of tax refunds. Both spouses must be present for those filing joint returns. NYC Free Tax Prep services include more than 200 VITA/Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) and AARP Tax-Aide sites citywide, as well as online self-preparation at nyc.gov/taxprep. At the sites, returns can be prepared inperson by an IRS certified VITA/TCE volunteer preparer or dropped-off to be completed by the preparer.

At the convenient drop-off sites, filers can drop off their tax documents and return later to pick up the completed return or receive it by email. New Yorkers can call 311 or visit nyc.gov/taxprep and use DCA’s interactive map to search for the most convenient free tax site. They can also text “Taxes” to 42033 (message and data rates may apply) to find the nearest location as well as receive tax season updates and reminders. The program is being sponsored by the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) Commissioner Lorelei Salas, Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, and Grow Brooklyn.

S

Home Remedies for Smelly Hair

melly hair, as the name suggests, is characterized by an unpleasant odor emanating from the hair and scalp. It can be caused by a condition called smelly hair syndrome. It can haunt people of any age and is not related to poor hygiene.

1. Baking Soda Baking soda is one of the most widely used home remedies for smelly hair because it helps neutralize foul odors and reduces oiliness. Mix one part baking soda in three parts water. Rinse your hair with water and apply the baking soda paste on your damp hair. Leave it on for about five minutes and then wash your hair. Repeat the process once a week. 2. Apple Cider Vinegar Apple cider vinegar works as a natural hair clarifier and removes product buildup that can contribute to smelly and oily hair. It also helps restore your hair’s normal pH, adds shine, and prevents frizzes.

Add one-half cup of organic apple cider vinegar to two cups of distilled water and mix in three drops of an essential oil such as lavender, rose, or others. Spray the solution throughout your hair and let it sit for a few minutes. Rinse it out with cold water. You can simply rinse your hair with a solution of one-half tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and one cup of water. Leave it on for about a minute before rinsing it out. You can also use apple cider vinegar after the baking soda remedy. Do not use it more than twice a week, though. 3. Lemon Juice Lemon juice is excellent for your skin as well as hair. It will leave your hair smelling fresh and clean. Plus, it will promote smooth, shiny hair and fight problems like dandruff and scalp infections. Dilute the juice squeezed from two lemons in a cup of water. After shampooing, work the mixture into your hair and

scalp. Leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing it off. Do this once or twice a week. If you have a fungal infection on your scalp, mix the juice from one lemon in one cup of plain yogurt. Work it into your hair and leave it on for 30 minutes before rinsing it off. Do this once a week. You can also combine lemon juice with a fragrant essential oil like rosemary or lavender and leave it in your hair overnight. Do this two or three times a week.

4. Tomato Juice Tomato juice helps remove foul odors from your hair. Moreover, the acidity in tomatoes helps balance the pH level in your hair. Apply fresh tomato juice on your scalp. Leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes and then rinse it out. Do this once or twice a week. Warning: Tomato juice is likely to lighten your hair.

5. Tea Tree Oil Tea tree oil has antimicrobial properties that help cure the problem of stinky hair caused by scalp infections. It will also reduce scalp acne and dandruff. Dilute a little tea tree oil in water and apply it on your scalp. Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes and then shampoo your hair. Add a few drops of tea tree oil to your shampoo (two drops per ounce of shampoo). Shampoo as usual.

A Bergenfield, NJ woman along with a Bronx man along were charged with allegedly hiding parts of her husband, authorities reported. Adrienne Smith, 43, called the Bergenfield Police Department on Jan. 2 to report her husband, Randolph Smith, 44, was missing since Christmas night, officials said. Adrienne Smith told police she had not heard from him since then. Police interviewed family and friends in an attempt to locate him but were unable to develop any leads. On Jan. 12, body parts were found in six plastic containers in Burlington City, authorities said. The parts were later discovered to belong to Randolph Smith. Dear Divine Diva: or years I dated guys who I knew wanted a committed relationship, while I just wanted to have fun. I enjoyed being single and never saw myself getting married. My mom was married three times to men who abused her. It made the idea of marriage terrifying to me. Through counseling, I have found healing from my past. I regret the damage I caused by leading guys on. Now that I want to be married, my life feels

had, I know what I shouldn't settle for, but the only guys asking me out are sleazy. I feel like in some ways life was easier when I wanted to stay single. How do I find a healthy balance so I won't go back to my old ways or end up settling out of desperation? -- Healed But Confused

O

Dear Healed But Confused: ne way would be to continue the counseling. While you may want to be married now, desperation and

neediness are not traits that attract worthwhile men. You need to be prepared to take some time and find a balance in your life while you're looking for Mr. Right. Explore your own interests, make friends with members of both sexes, do some volunteering if you have the time. If you do, the chances of your meeting the right kind of man will improve because you will have more to offer.—Always Divine Diva

10 Reasons Being Single on Valentine's Day Is Actually the Best Please send your questions and comments to: divinestreethype@gmail.com

W

BY NOELLE DEVOE hen February 14th comes along, if you don't have a significant other, you usually feel the pressure to find a date, because nothing's worse than spending Valentine's Day alone, right? WRONG. As awesome as it is to have an SO on the most romantic day of the year to do all the exceptionally romantic things couples do, there are definitely many, many advantages to being single too. 1. Your wallet won't suffer for love. You know that if you were in a relationship with someone you really cared about, the money you'd end up spending on a romantic dinner and gift would totally be worth it (despite your aching bank account). Still, you can't help being grateful you don't have to spend all that money and can save it for something you really want, like concert tix to YOUR fave band. 2. You don't have to stress about planning some massively romantic gesture for bae. The truth is, trying to plan an elaborate date that blows all your other dates out of the water is really hard — not to mention, intimidating. How do you even know for sure they'll like what you've planned?

3. You won't be disappointed when, inevitably, your big, special date isn't all that romantic irl. Everyone sets their expectations waaaaay to high for their Valentine's Day and as a result, end up trying to force the romance and emotion, which just ends up feeling awkward and, well, forced. The date always ends up being extraordinarily boring. But since you're single, you don't have to worry about feeling underwhelmed and then having to hide your disappointment so bae's feelings won't be hurt. 4. All your fave candy will be on sale, and you can buy as much as you want for yourself. If you have a significant other on February 14th, when all the Valentine's Day candies go on sale, you'll feel like you shouldn't buy any of it for yourself because that's your SO's job on this special day. Whereas if you're single, Valentine's Day candy is just plain old chocolate that's on sale and you don't feel any type of way about buying a bunch of it for a fraction of the price. 5. And you don't have to share your Valentine's Day candy with anyone. Since you don't have an SO, you don't have to share

your candy, or let bae eat the caramel peanut butter chocolate you really wanted from your heart-shaped box of assorted chocolates just because it's Valentine's Day. 6. You can do WHATEVER you want to do. When you're single, February 14th is just another day of the year. You don't have any obligation to go to some fancy-schmancy restaurant while trying extra hard to be romantic. You can just spend the day doing what you love to do: binge-watching Netflix while laying comfortably in bed. 7. And you'll have more free time. Let's be honest: Valentine's Day isn't a one day commitment. With all the extra effort you have to put into getting the perfect gift and planning the perfect love-dovey night out with bae, you can end up spending weeks planning for the big day. But if you don't have a bae, you can spend all that time doing something else, like writing the next bestselling YA novel! 8. You can watch whatever movie YOU want. You won't have to go through the hassle of seeing if bae likes the movie you want to watch and, if not, what it is they'd rather watch instead. The back and forth of picking a movie

is totally eliminated and you can just cuddle under your favorite blanket and watch The Notebook like you've been planning on doing all day without having to worry about anybody else. 9. You can have a low-pressure date with your girls. There's no point in getting yourself down about not having a date on Valentine's Day when you have other single friends who you can have an awesome Galentine's day with. We promise, sharing a pepperoni pizza with your besties while you bake brownies and binge-watch Pretty Little Liars will be just as awesome as any elaborate, highpressure Valentine's Day date you would have had if you had an SO. 10. You can meet someone new ON Valentine's Day. Love is in the air! What better time to start a brand new romance with the guy standing in front of you at Starbucks, or the cute cashier at your fave bookstore? Valentine's Day is the perf excuse to be extra bold and ask them for their number, or to chat up your crush at a party. Not knowing what amazingness the day will bring is just as exciting as any romantic date.

Tips for staying healthy this winter

B

oost your immunity throughout winter by consuming a range of fresh foods including green leafy vegetables. You can also boost immunity by taking a quality vitamin such as Echinacea, garlic, vitamin C and or Zinc. While many people will be happily saying good-bye to a long, hot summer and welcoming the new season, just as many of us will be dreading the cooler weather arriving. Winter is often given a bad rap as it brings with it the cold & flu season and those cold, dark mornings. However, with a little effort there is no reason for our health to suffer during the colder months! There are a number of things we can do to help keep ourselves and our family just as healthy, happy and active during winter as we are during summer. Boost immunity It’s important to take care of our health throughout the year but during the winter months it becomes even more essential. Eating well, getting enough sleep and staying active are all important during winter to help keep you and your family healthy and to support your immune systems. Supplements containing herbs and nutrients such as echinacea, garlic, vitamin C, and zinc will help to support healthy immune function. Keep moving While it’s a little harder to find the motivation to exercise when it is cold outside, remember that keeping active during winter is essential to support our health and wellbeing. Moving your exercise indoors during winter will help to keep you warm as well as fit and healthy. Be sure to spend time warming up before you start your exercise as it can take a little longer for your joints to loosen up in the cold weather.

(Family Features) dopting healthier eating habits doesn’t have to mean resorting to tasteless food. In fact, you may surprise yourself by enjoying your new lineup of healthy, wholesome meals even more than the calorie-laden dishes you covet. These recipes are just as big on flavor as they are good for you, so you can savor every last bite all day long. Take time to start off the day with a unique twist on a nutritious smoothie by enjoying it in a bowl. Then at lunch, rely on unexpected ingredients like ripe, juicy berries and beans to transform a ho-hum salad into a true culinary delight. Manageable Main Course Once the dinner bell rings and it’s time to focus on the night’s main course without overshooting a calorie count, aim for a tasty yet healthy main dish like this recipe for Chicken and Vegetables. Combining skinless chicken thighs with frozen vegetables is a simple way to keep nutrition at the forefront while still enjoying a comforting dinner. Find more health-conscious recipes at health.gov. Chicken and Vegetables Recipe courtesy of the USDA Servings: 4 1 1/2 tablespoons margarine 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 cup onions, chopped 1 pound chicken thighs (4 ounces each), boneless and skinless 1 package (10 ounces) cut green beans, frozen 1/4 teaspoon pepper In heavy skillet, melt margarine. Add garlic and onions; stir until blended. Cook over medium heat, until tender, about 5 minutes. Remove from skillet. Place chicken in skillet. Cook over medium heat until chicken is thoroughly done and no longer pink in color, about 12 minutes. Remove chicken from skillet; keep warm. Place green beans, pepper and cooked onions in same skillet. Cover and cook over medium-low heat until beans are tender, about 5 minutes.

Add chicken to vegetable mixture. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until heated through, about 3 minutes. Note: To remove bone from bone-in chicken thighs: Place chicken on cutting board. Remove skin from thighs. Turn chicken thighs over. Cut around bone and remove.

A Smooth Way to Start Your Day A wealth of research shows that starting each morning with a nutritious breakfast delivers benefits throughout the day. If you’re pressed for time or simply need to mix up your morning routine, put a fresh spin on a time-saving favorite by making a smoothie bowl. According to registered dietitian and nutritionist Carolyn Brown, people love to eat with a spoon and find it more mentally and physically satisfying. The same goes for adding texture, such as a crunchy topping like goodnessknows snack squares. These satisfying, gluten free snacks are crafted with the goodness of whole nuts, real fruits and toasted oats, with no artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners. Divided into four snackable squares per serving and nestled in a layer made with dark chocolate, one individual, two-bite square contains only about 40 calories.

Find out more about how doing a little good for yourself can go a long way at goodnessknows.com.

Oatmeal Banana Smoothie Bowl Recipe courtesy of Alison Ray of So Chic Life 2/3 cup rolled oats 1/2 cup full fat coconut milk 1 tablespoon chia seeds 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract sea salt 1/2 cup almond milk, 2 percent milk or soy milk 1 small banana (or 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce) goodnessknows snack squares (any flavor) grated coconut, to taste In small bowl, mix together oats, coconut milk, chia seeds, vanilla and pinch of salt. Cover and place in refrigerator at least 30 minutes, or overnight to help flavors soak in. In blender or food processor, combine oat mixture with remaining milk and half of the banana (or applesauce). Blend until smooth and creamy. Pour creamy oats into bowl, and top with snack squares, coconut and slices of remaining banana half. Tip: To thin consistency, use additional milk.

Ways your small business can do more with less Highlighting the opportunities and challenges of local business

rowing your small business isn't necessarily cheap, but are you taking advantage of all the options available to you? With a little digging, you can discover more ways to save money on the things you do every day as a small business owner. To get started, here are five quick tips that can help your small business grow and help improve your bottom line: Advertising Have you ever heard of "Remnant Advertising"? When it comes to buying advertising space, you have a lot of options. Media outlets are pretty good about filling up their ad space, but sometimes they have a few available holes to fill at the last minute. Typically, these remnant slots are filled with public service or house ads, but your business can take advantage of the shortfall, usually at a heavily discounted rate. (That discount can sometimes be up to 90 percent off the regular price!) Budget-Friendly Tip: Because remnant ad space deals are typically a last-minute type of deal, make sure your ads are approved and ready to go in a wide variety of formats and sizes so you don't lose out on a great bargain.

Customer Service Great customer service can result in free advertising! Don't underestimate the value of word-of-mouth advertising. If you offer amazing customer service, your happy customers will undoubtedly spread the word. The best part: It doesn't cost you a dime. A courtesy follow-up call, being on time for your services, a friendly thank you note on your in-

Bonus: You already know their names and breaking the ice shouldn't be a problem. Those interactions will be good practice, too!

Al Jackson

voices, repeat customer discounts, being on time for appointments, finishing projects under budget -- these aren't marketing gimmicks. They're just good business practices that will earn you more customers in the long run. Don't be afraid to ask a happy customer to share their experience! Budget-Friendly Tip: Smiles are free and infectious. When greeting a customer (in person or on the phone), a smile is always an appropriate icebreaker. Even when dealing with a complaint, a friendly demeanor leaves a lasting impression that money can't buy. Networking Even if you run a one-person shop, you probably know that there is always value in

building solid partnerships within your community. Don't ignore a potential networking opportunity. Spend a few minutes online and scour LinkedIn to network with likeminded or complementary businesses in your area. Want to get out of the office for an hour? Find your local Better Business Bureau or Rotary International chapter and attend a meeting or luncheon. Remember -- lunch is cheap and it only costs a few pennies to hand out a business card, but the return on a potential partnership could be limitless. Budget-Friendly Tip: Before you sign up for every networking luncheon you can find, start your networking mission by first reconnecting with old connections (in your industry or not).

Discount Programs Don't discount the discounts! Clipping coupons is great way for consumers to get through the lean years and survive, but discount programs are an equally great tool that your small business can use every day to save on expenses. For example, if you are a Verizon Small Business customer, you already have access to the Verizon Discount Program, which offers money-saving opportunities from services like FedEx and AMEX. Budget-Friendly Tip: Cash is still king. When choosing a new vendor (or when negotiating prices with a current vendor), ask if they offer a discount for cash transactions.

Reward Programs Look for easy wins, like customer appreciation programs. Check with the service vendors you currently use to see if they have a reward program you can join for free. With some programs, like Verizon Small Biz Rewards, you can redeem your rewards for gift cards, which you can use for your small business' expenses instead of cash. You could even pass on those rewards to an exceptional employee as a Thank You. Budget-Friendly Tip: When shopping for a corporate credit card for your small business, look for one that can help track your company's expenses as well as reward you in the form of easily redeemable cash back or airline miles.

HIGH MONTHLY CREDIT CARD PAYMENTS combined with even higher interest rates can make it almost impossible to maintain control over your credit card debt. Even with your monthly payments you may not see much of a reduction in debt no matter what you do. What’s more, as your credit card balances increase, it can also cause problems for your budget – you end up juggling bills, choosing between expenses, and putting off important purchases. Luckily, there’s a way you can find the solution that works for your unique financial situation – and even better, it won’t cost a thing to get the information you need.

CREDIT COUNSELING IS THE EASIEST, MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO EXPLORE THE OPTIONS FOR CREDIT CARD DEBT AND IDENTIFY THE BEST SOLUTION FOR YOUR NEEDS. Speak with a certified credit counselor at no charge to analyze your debt and budget. They will review your options to see what solutions may work best for you. Get Out of Debt Faster As a result of those lower interest rates – more of your monthly pay-

ments go toward your debt instead of adding more interest – which means you can get out of debt faster.
