Keep the children busy as the devil makes work for idle hands!

everal million students are now officially on summer holidays from schools and colleges across the nation.

This almost two-month period is a very important time in the lives of these youth as they face both challenges and opportunities. As they struggle to maintain their jobs and other gainful employment, most low income families in our communities have been experiencing difficulties keeping their kids “productive” during the summer break. With very little adult supervision, the summer holiday provides the ideal period for kids to get into trouble or to do stupid things.

In fact, studies on youth behavior reveal that most kids start their first “unlawful or illicit” activities, including sex, smoking and drinking, during the summer. Already facing other social and economic issues, it is very difficult for these children with nothing to do during the continuous period for some 60 days. We agree “the devil finds work for idle hands” and are therefore in agreement with Protestants that believe children should be busy because the devil makes work for idle hands. Nevertheless, despite the challenges, parents will have to do more to prepare their children for the long summer break.

New York City, for example, offers many opportunities for kids to learn team sports and to try free activities such as swimming, tennis, golf, fishing, kayaking and camping.

There are also summer jobs that are offered by several cities and boroughs, but of course registering for these free programs takes a little legwork and, since many are first-come, first-served, punctuality is a must. As in the case of several other communities, African American business owners and other professionals could consider a summer holiday program for children in the community. After all, in support of the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child,” this would be the perfect opportunity for other members of the community to help motivate and inspire their neighbor’s kids.

the 2018–19 school year. Recently, we kicked off NYC Men Teach with a hiring fair, networking opportunities, and a panel discussion. At this kick-off, men of color who are interested in teaching met with principals about potential job opportunities in their schools, and heard from seasoned teachers and industry influencers who offered guidance and insight on the teaching profession. One of the goals of this initiative is to enable students to see successful male role models of color in their classrooms. During a recent school visit, I saw students honoring “heroes” in their lives, an activity devoted to the men who’ve supported students during their academic career.

Classroom activities such as these are wonderful first steps; however, we must make a concerted effort to get the men in our school communities to expand their involvement in the lives of students. Recruiting men of color to teach our children will help lift our families and our communities. I have high expectations for the impact of the NYC Men Teach program. Not only will our future teachers influence their students, but through the program’s mentorship program and professional learning opportunities, male teachers of color will build their leadership skills critical in the classroom setting, and learn that their professional dreams are attainable.

Most importantly, they will impart those crucial life skills to their students. I encourage men of color who are interested in becoming teachers to complete the NYC Men Teach interest form. Parents, families, and community members who would like to learn more about this initiative can visit the NYC Men Teach website. NYC Men Teach will have a fundamental impact on our students’ academic, social, and emotional growth. As a lifelong educator, a grandmother, and a New Yorker, I am excited about this effort and what it means for all students to see themselves reflected in the teachers who guide their learning and growth.

Attorney Sentenced to Prison for Fraud, Money Laundering Pasquale Stiso

New Rochelle: disbarred attorney from New Rochelle was sentenced Tuesday to 43 months in prison for involvement in a ticket resale fraud scheme and a real estate investment fraud conspiracy. U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman said Pasquale Stiso, also known as “Pat Stiso,” had been previously convicted of one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, six counts of wire fraud and three counts of money laundering. In addition to the prison term, Stiso was sentenced to three years of supervised release and was ordered to pay restitution of $460,000. According to evidence presented at trial and documents file in this case, co-defendant Paul Mancuso, 49, of Glen Rock, New Jersey, presented himself as an investor, broker and developer of various purported investments that didn’t exist at all or for which Mancuso had no involvement. Officials said many of the victims of the pair lost all or substantially all of the money they invested with them. Many lost all or most of their life savings. One of the schemes Stiso and Mancuso perpetrated was telling victims they would purchase event tickets at a lower or wholesale rate and then resell them to the public at a higher rate, creating profits for the investors, but no tickets were purchased.

Three Arrested in Connection with Fatal Harlem Stabbing

olice have arrested three people in connection with a stabbing that left one woman dead and her daughter injured in Manhattan early Tuesday morning. Investigators say it happened just after 2 a.m. at an apartment located at 95 Lenox Avenue in Harlem. Police say when officers arrived, they found 38-year-old Michelle Kenny with stab wounds to her chest. She died a short time later. Kenny's 21-year-old daughter was stabbed in the arm and torso and is listed in stable condition. Police sources say Kenny's neighbor, 26-year-old Ashanti Daniels, stabbed both women after they got into a dispute. Daniels is now facing charges including murder and attempted murder. Police also arrested 28-year-old Tyson Martin and 27year-old James Martin on assault charges.

NUMBER OF MISSING GIRLS RAISES CONCERNS:

New York City Council Member Andy King (12th C.D./Northeast Bronx) was joined by community leaders and concerned youth at a press conference on Wednesday (June 29) regarding the number of teenage girls missing in the Bronx from July 2014 to today and the establishment of a Safe Haven Zone. King acknowledged 14 teen Bronx girls reported missing by the media, the National Center of Missing and Exploited Children and the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services – Missing Persons Clearinghouse. Of the list of 14 teenagers reported missing yesterday, Council Member King announced that three have been found and/or returned home: Miracle Mann, Emily Arroyo and Maciel Ramirez. “This concerns us as a community because if the teens reported missing are not runaways, it’s a possibility they could have been abducted by a stranger – people they meet on the Internet. Young girls are grabbed and, unfortunately, human-trafficking does exist,” said CKing.

De Blasio and Cuomo Feud over Day Care

he feud between Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo is now moving into day care.

The governor is enacting emergency regulations designed to protect children from unsafe day care programs. The state would be given greater leeway to shut down centers with multiple health or safety violations. Mayor Bill de Blasio nixed a similar bill passed by the City Council last month. He said at the time overly strict day care policies would disproportionately affect minority and low-income families. Now, the governor plans to go over de Blasio's head to put stronger regulations on day care facilities. Current laws only allow a program to be shut down in the case of "imminent danger" to a child.

Self-Proclaimed Pastor and Car Dealer on Fraud Charges NEWS

BROOKLYN: self-proclaimed pastor and car dealer has been indicted for stealing more than $66,000 from seven Brooklyn clients in a used-car scam — showing clients used cars at auction, telling them he had purchased the cars but never delivering them or fully refunding the money. Daniel Efosa, 60 formerly of Canarsie, Brooklyn was arraigned last week before Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Michael Brennan on an indictment in which he is charged with one count of first-degree scheme to defraud and seven counts of third-degree grand larceny. The defendant was ordered held on bail of $10,000 bond or cash, ordered to surrender his passport and to return to court on August 24, 2016. According to the indictment, from

March 18, 2012 to February 19, 2014, the defendant, a used-car wholesaler and selfproclaimed “pastor,” stole money from seven people who believed that he was purchasing used cars for them at out-ofstate auctions. The defendant allegedly attracted his clients in Brooklyn, through the use of billboards and business cards, and then drove clients from their homes to used car auctions, mostly in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Once there, the defendant allegedly had his clients choose a car for purchase, which he then purportedly bid on, and won. According to the indictment, the defendant’s clients paid him in cash after the purported purchase because he told them that the auction only accepted payment from dealers. The clients left the auction

with the understanding that the car would be delivered to Brooklyn at a later date after passing inspection. Although the defendant gave his clients receipts for their cash payments to him, in instances when clients asked the defendant for proof of sale, he allegedly hurriedly showed them papers, which he claimed he had to keep for delivery of the vehicle. According to the indictment, none of the clients examined the paperwork. After the auctions, when the clients called the defendant inquiring about the delivery of their cars, he allegedly provided various excuses to explain the delay in delivery, including weather delays and problems discovered during inspection. According to the indictment, none of the vehicles were ever delivered and none of the clients received full refunds.

V Former Trinidad and Tobago PM dies

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad: he dreaded disease – cancer – has claimed the life of yet another victim, this time former Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Patrick Augustus Mervyn Manning. Manning, according to a social media posting this morning, passed away peacefully at the San Fernando General Hospital in Trinidad at 8:15 a.m. today, July 2, 2016, surrounded by his family and loved ones. The former PM had been battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a cancer of the blood cancer. He was 69. Manning served as the fourth and sixth prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago – between 1991-1995 and from 2001-2010. He did not contest the September 7, 2015 general election. He was also Political Leader of the People’s National Movement (PNM) from 1987 to 2010. A geologist by training, Manning served as Member of Parliament for the San Fernando East constituency since 1971 and is currently the longest-serving member of the House of Representatives. He was the Leader of the Opposition from 1986 to 1990 and again from 1995 to 2001. Manning was born in San Fernando and received his secondary education at Presentation College, San Fernando, and his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of the West Indies at Mona, in 1969. After graduation he returned to Trinidad where he worked as a geologist for Texaco.

WORLD'S OLDEST MALE TWINS TURN 103:

The world’s oldest living male twins, Pieter and Paulus Langerock of Belgium, have turned 103, raising a glass of wine to more than a century of life together. The brothers, neither of whom ever married, have lived with each other for most of their lives. To this day, they are barely apart, sharing a room at their nursing home just outside Ghent. The pair said they sometimes regretted not having had any children or grandchildren, but they were each other’s best friends. The elegantly dressed centenarians who had long careers as court magistrates in the 20th century, said they preferred speaking French and being addressed as Pierre and Paul. They have another two years to go to break the record of US twin brothers Glen and Dale Moyer, both of whom reached 105.

GAMBIAN, BANJUL: he Gambia and Tanzania have banned child marriage, with tough penalties for those who breach the rulings. Gambia's President Yayha Jammeh announced that anyone marrying a girl below 18 would be jailed for up to 20 years. In Tanzania, the high court imposed a landmark ruling outlawing marriage under the age of 18 for boys and girls. Some 30% of underage girls are married in The Gambia, while in Tanzania the rate is 37%. Before the Tanzania ruling, girls as young as 14 could marry with parental consent, while it was 18 for boys. The BBC's Tulanana Bohela in Dar es Salaam says this is a big win for child rights groups and activists, who will now have an easier time rescuing girls from child marriage.

The case was brought by lobby group Msichana Initiative. Gambia's President speaking at the Eidul-Fitr celebrations at the end of Ramadan, said parents and imams who perform the ceremonies would also face prison. "If you want to know whether what I am saying is true or not, try it tomorrow and see," he warned. Women's rights campaigners have welcomed the ban, however some say that it would be better to engage with local communities to try to change attitudes towards child marriage instead of threatening families with prison sentences, "I don't think locking parents up is the answer... it could lead to a major backlash and sabotage the ban," Isatou Jeng of the women's rights organisation Girls Agenda told the Thomson Reuters Foundation by phone from the Gambian capital, Banjul.

Zimbabwe, Harare: fter a mass strike in Zimbabwe this week, the country’s 92-year-old president was forced to convene an emergency meeting as the nation came to a standstill. The strike, dubbed #Zimshutdown2016 on Twitter, was not only unprecedented, but it was a rare moment of public defiance in a country that has been ruled by Robert Mugabe and his Zanu-PF party for more than 35 years. “We are not afraid any more. We are ready to bring the dictator down,” said Promise Mkwananzi, the leader of the #Tajamuka (we have risen) movement as he addressed a press conference a day after the strike. What started as a localised demonstration launched by unpaid government workers quickly escalated into a rallying point for national outcry against regime corruption and the worsening financial crisis. Mugabe spoke to the country on Friday, denouncing the protests and suggesting the delay in paying salaries to civil servants was a “temporary problem” that should not have prompted teachers, doctors and nurses to go on strike.

n July 4, 2016, as the United States marked its 240th birthday – the day the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence in 1776 – the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services celebrated thousands By of new citizens all Felicia J. Persaud across the country. This year, the US welcomed more than 7,000 new citizens in over 50 Independence Day-themed naturalization ceremonies between July 1 and 4, 2016. Immigrants took the oath of naturalization from Seattle to Rhode Island to Massachusetts; from New York to Florida to California to Arizona; from New Mexico to North Carolina to Virginia, and from Arizona to the U.S. Virgin Islands and Guam. In Seattle alone, more than 500 new U.S. citizens from more than 80 countries – the largest daytime Independence Day observance in the Northwest – were sworn in by U.S. Circuit Judge Richard C. Tallman at Fisher Pavilion. In most other cities, the naturalization was included as part of their July Fourth celebration, an indication of the value most of America still places on immigrants today – despite the racist rhetoric flowing from some quarters. For most, the ceremony is the last step in a lengthy naturalization process. From getting a green card to naturalization, it is almost five years. New immigrants’ must also prove their knowledge of American government and of spoken English, and many have to wait for months or even years for the Immigration and Naturalization Service to process their paperwork and undergo fingerprinting and a background check, before being called to an interview and being approved. But this year, many immigrants, fueled by the hate coming from the GOP Presidential candidate’s mouth, are enduring the process and becoming citizens. In the naturalization oath, new citizens swear to support the Constitution of the United States, and voting is an integral part of that Constitution. Come November 8th, these 7,000 plus citizens will be among the new voters added to the election rolls around the country.

Delus Commits Suicide! Delus

ancehall artiste Delus reportedly recorded a video of himself with a gun at his head moments before his death. Delus, 35, the older brother of Konshens, is suspected to have committed suicide at his home in Havendale, St Andrew, recently. Police investigators at the scene said that an amateur video was sent proportedly by Delus to his girlfriend, who raced back home to stop him. Neighbours said that they saw when Delus’ girlfriend drove home at about 7 p.m. and made a mad rush for the house while screaming “No! No! No!” They surmised that he was already dead by the time she got inside. Two females, said to be tenants, were at the house when the shooting took place. Delus’ house is located across from Freddie McGregor’s Big Ship studios. The Constabulary Communications Unit said last night that residents heard an explosion about 7:05 p.m. and summoned the police. Delus was found with a gunshot wound to the head. --------------------------

The right to marry is a civil right. The right to desegregated schools is a civil right. The right to worship as you see fit is a civil right. However, the right to be treated with equality and receive justice are human rights. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are human rights. We are endeavoring here at TEHRS to prompt an intellectual discussion about this distinction. So far we have released two other books, “Your Eyes Can't See My Hear” and “White Men Aren't Chumps,” next year we plan to release,” Failure to Man is not Failure to God.” The titles of these books are merely a seed for a conversation. The Conversation is the focus.

Christopher Murphy (D-CT). The exploratory committee will help Dr. Adams, to examine the possibility of running and winning a US Senate seat. She would be the first black, woman from Connecticut to be in the Senate. Dr. Adams has the experience and profile to run and win. She has worked in Sen. Edward Kennedy’s Office of Health, Education, Labor, and Pension Committee, where she helped draft the re-authorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, also known as No Child Left Behind. Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus denounces violent acts by reckless officer

New York, NY: he Members of the Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus are outraged at the reckless violence that took place over Independence Day weekend when Delrawn Small was needlessly killed by an NYPD officer’s unnecessary use of deadly force. Mr. Small was involved in an interaction with the off-duty officer and Mr. Small was unarmed. Nevertheless, he was gunned down in front of his family, including his infant daughter.

The Caucus has long advocated for the use of a special prosecutor in cases like this one. We are cognizant of the fact that Attorney General Eric Schneiderman will have jurisdiction in this case. However, we have grave concerns.

We believe it is grossly inappropriate that the NYPD take any part in the official investigation, especially in the collection and retention of evidence. As an entity that has demonstrated that it prioritizes personnel over process, the NYPD has repeatedly hidden behind the “blue shield” to protect bad officers and allow them to continue harming communities of color. Officer Wayne Isaacs has already been the subject of claims of racially-charged violence—exactly two years ago today, Isaacs was alleged to have used racist slurs while

beating a civilian, for which the NYPD paid a $20,000 settlement in the resulting lawsuit. We are deeply disturbed that the NYPD goes to such great lengths—at taxpayers’ expense—to keep dangerous officers on the streets. Each time we fail to hold police accountable for their misconduct, New Yorkers lose more faith in a system they see as irreparably broken. Without trust in law enforcement, our city becomes more polarized and less confident in the government’s ability to protect its most vulnerable residents.

In a proclamation signed by Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and several other members of the council, Maitland was honored for contributing to the success of the newspaper, especially leading its popularity in the African American/Caribbean community, since its inception in April 2006. Maitland is also the founder of the community lifestyle paper that is available in print and online. Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2016, Street Hype is now the leading newspaper serving the community with a readership of over 450,000 in New York City and beyond. Man shot dead in Paterson months after being released from prison

PATERSON — A 35-year-old man who was recently released from prison after 13 years was shot dead in the Silk City Friday morning, authorities said. Michael Boone, Jr., of Paterson, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the area of 400 East 28th Street shortly before 1 a.m., Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia

M. Valdes and Acting Paterson Police Chief William G. Fraher said in a news release. Police responded to the area on the report of gunshots at 12:38 a.m. and found Boone's body. He was pronounced dead by a physician from St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center at 12:50 a.m.

Paterson officers crash while trying to make traffic stop

PASSAIC, New Jersey: wo Paterson police cruisers crashed while attempting to pull over a wanted vehicle in neighboring Passaic early Wednesday. The officers crashed at the intersection of Main Avenue and Van Houten just after 4 a.m. One cruiser rear-ended the suspect's vehicle, while the second cruiser hit the side of a building on Main Avenue.

The impact from the collision was violent as the car slammed into the front of the unoccupied Metro PCS, and the officer driving was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The cruiser struck the gates of several business before it stopped near the corner.

S’mores Dip Prep time: 6 minutes; Makes: 1 cup 3 Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bars (1.55 ounces) 3 tablespoons heavy cream 1/2-3/4 cup miniature marshmallows graham crackers, for serving Heat oven to 350 F. Remove wrappers from chocolate bars; break into pieces. Place chocolate pieces and heavy cream in microwave-safe and ovenproof ramekin or cassolette. Microwave 30 seconds on medium; stir. If necessary, microwave 10 seconds more and stir until chocolate is melted and mixture is smooth. Cover surface of chocolate mixture with marshmallows. Heat in oven 10-12 minutes, or until marshmallows are puffed and just beginning to brown. Remove from oven; cool 5 minutes. Serve with graham cracker pieces. Note: Recipe amounts can be increased or decreased. Each chocolate bar used will require 1 tablespoon heavy cream.
