Promoting Safe Sleep Practices:
Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services, Dr. Herminia Palacio and New York City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS) Commissioner David Hansell focus a new born baby at the NYC Health Lincoln Hospital during the launch of a campaign to promote safe sleep practices for families on Wednesday (May 24) in the Bronx. The community-based training initiative which started since January 2016 recorded over 12,300 New Yorkers trained on approved Safe Sleep practices. In an effort to focus these trainings in communities with the highest rates of sleep-related infant deaths, ACS’ Safe Sleep team also trained over 5,300 fatherhood groups, faith-based organizations, expectant teens, healthcare professionals, formerly-incarcerated mothers, public housing residents, and homeless families.
Nearly 740,000 foreigners overstayed US visas last year
T
he US Homeland Security Department says nearly 740,000 foreigners who were supposed to leave the country during a recent 12-month period overstayed their visas. The count released Monday includes people who arrived in the US by plane or boat but does not include ground border crossings. Countries with the highest visa overstays during the period from October 2015 to September 2016 were Canada, Mexico,
Brazil, China and India. The number of visa overstays was about 200,000 higher than the previous 12-month period. That's largely because this year's report adds students, who overstayed visas at a much higher rate than business travellers and tourists. Students were not included in last year's report. An estimated 40 per cent of the roughly 11 million people in the United States illegally have overstayed their visas.

A
Of skepticism and the Jamaican Diaspora EDITORIAL
s long as we can remember, and decades before the word “Diaspora” became popular, Jamaicans living overseas have been supporting their homeland and passionately persevering the culture. The term “Diaspora” describes a community of people who live outside their shared country of origin or ancestry, but maintain active connections with it. A diaspora includes both emigrants and their descendants. As in the case of millions of other immigrants, Jamaicans continue to create one of the most influential “Diaspora” movements in North America, Latin America and parts of Europe. The Jamaican diaspora population is estimated to be less than six million people, but it has been the most dominant and the most noticeable group of people in every city, town or community where they take up residence. Jamaicans have always been willing to share their food, culture, fashion and other lifestyle habits with their neighbors. Jamaica’s first national hero, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, has been credited with starting
the African American civil rights movement. Garvey became a mass leader whose gift of appealing to the dreams and ideals that fueled the minds and hearts of millions of blacks. This movement would eventually inspire other spin-offs, ranging from the Nation of Islam to the Rastafari Movement. Thousands of other Jamaicans immigrants have also contributed to the social and economic development of their communities, especially in the areas of politics, religion and entertainment. Despite such influence, the “Jamaican Diaspora” has been characterized by individualism and the skepticism of unsupportive homeland leaders who view these “foreigners” as individuals telling them what to do. Nevertheless, since 1962, as an independent island and
with the establishment of embassies and consulates, the Jamaican government has been talking to the people and formalizing the diaspora organization. In recent years, the Government of Jamaica has taken steps towards mobilizing the Diaspora for homeland development. For example, there exists a structured Diaspora organization that hosts a biennial conference in Jamaica with the goal of facilitating the growth of Jamaica’s economy and human and social development. The Mapping Jamaica Diaspora Project is being implemented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration. Its aim is to identify through survey responses how the Diaspora can contribute to the development of Jamaica, while also determining their needs and concerns. These are excellent initiatives and positive steps. How-

ever, it would appear that the “Jamaican Diaspora Movement” is appealing to the most traditional and other influential groups in the Jamaican community. As a result, in our estimation, less than 20 percent of Jamaican immigrants, especially in North America, participate in the island’s diaspora activities. The Mapping project should provide the database to target individual Jamaicans and organizations in smaller groups rather that entire regions covering 13 states as in the case of the Jamaica Diaspora Advisory Board Northeast USA. The establishment of a “federation type” of diaspora network would be the best option for appealing to more Jamaicans. For example, every church, company or any other organization that is owned or managed by Jamaican could be qualified to become a member of the ‘Jamaican Diaspora Movement.’ Networking is always the most practical and cost effective method of targeting people working together for a common cause. _____________________ Patrick Maitland patrick@streethype.net

Weird Things Are Happening in NY
Y
ou should know that here in New York’s political world, a lot of weird things are happening. During my 15 years serving as a New York State Senator, I have witnessed many weird things, but in these last few days, there are things taking place that have many people scratching their heads. First The Board of Directors of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade have anointed Oscar López Rivera with the title of “National Freedom Hero,” causing great divisions among Puerto Ricans and bringing great damage to the 60th Annual Puerto Rican Day Parade. Because of this decision by the National Puerto Rican Day Parade’s Board, elected officials are divided, and so are community leaders and family members. Big sponsors such as Goya Foods, Jet Blue, NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill, the NYPD Lieutenants Benevolent Association, NYPD Sergeants
WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Benevolent Association, NYPD Hispanic Society, the Rafael Ramos Foundation, and the NY Patrolmen's Benevolent Association's (PBA) are all withdrawing from the Parade, and many others are considering doing the same. This mess, created by the Board of Directors of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, has created worse divisions than Donald Trump’s election to the Presidency. As you know, Oscar López Rivera served 35 years in Federal prison for seditious acts of conspiracy to overthrow the United States government, and for his
ties to Fuerzas Armadas de Liberación Nacional (FALN), a mil-
itant group whose members were convicted of bombings while fighting for Puerto Rico’s independence. Many accuse Oscar López Rivera of being involved in terrorist acts where people lost lives. Mr. Oscar López Rivera was never found guilty of killing anyone, and always maintained his innocence in any criminal act. Continued on page 4

Continued from page 3 The Parade leaders have refused, as I have been suggesting, to rescind the “National Freedom Hero” title they have bestowed upon Oscar López Rivera, and just allow him to march as a plain Puerto Rican without any title. By continuing this IN YOUR FACE decision, the Board of Directors is showing a weird way of wanting the best for the Parade and the Puerto Rican community
Second There are more than 35 elected officials (and I am not one of them) who have signed a letter in support of the Board of Directors of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade to name Oscar López Rivera as a National Freedom Heroe. We all know that right now Puerto Rico is going through a serious financial situation where families are suffering, schools are being closed, services have been forced to be cut, and the Island remains in debt of more than 100 billion dollars. Instead of naming Oscar López Rivera a National Puerto Rican hero and joining elected officials together to do this, the Board of the National Puerto Rican Day Parade should be concentrating better on bringing attention to the fiscal situation in Puerto Rico. Very weird! Third As everyone knows, there are thirty-two (32) Democratic Senators here in the New York Senate are fragmented into two different Conferences: the Regular Democratic Conference led by Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins, and the Independent Democratic Conference led by Senator Jeff Klein. There are many forces working very hard to bring them together and unite all Democratic Senators into just one Conference, as it used to be. Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins and her Deputy, Senator Mike Gianaris have even made public statements, asking for the eight Members of the Independent Democratic Conference (IDC) to come back into the fold. But at the same time, they are asking for an investigation into the way Republicans and the Members of the IDC are distributing stipends to Committee Leaders. This is a weird way of asking for unity! Fourth Since Donald Trump became President of the United States of America, our beloved Governor Andrew Cuomo has been a constant thorn in his side. Governor Andrew Cuomo has been the biggest critic of President Donald Trump, even calling for an investigation of President Trump. Governor Andrew Cuomo has been planning his own future presidential ambitions, trying to be seen an alternative to Donald Trump, and trying to act like one of Donald Trump’s worst nightmares. Now that New York City’s subway system is in a chaotic state and everyone is criticizing the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA), our great Governor Andrew Cuomo has written a letter to Donald Trump (practically begging) for President Trump to come to his aid to save the MTA. This is a weird way of asking for help from someone you dislike. These are some of the weird things happening in New York’s political system.

MOUNT VERNON: ayor Richard Thomas on Tuesday (May 23) announced the City of Mount Vernon will be collaborating with Microsoft to acquire and utilize key technology tools to increase public safety. Since entering office, Mayor Thomas has repeatedly requested funding for public safety which has been rejected and they made public comments following a rash of shootings including Shamoya McKenzie that they would support public safety investments and they have not done so to date. The Mayor is exercising his executive authority to execute Phase 1 of a technological transformation. The initiative, dubbed Project “Bright Knight” after the Mount Vernon mascot Knights, will foster a unique partnership with the city and Microsoft. Phase 1 in immediate investments include: Developing and issuing a mobile community-based application allowing for users to report events and situations in real-time; Video Monitoring including $200,000 for cameras; $60,000 in smartphones for the entire police department. Bay Shore Couple Convicted of $580K Nonprofit Embezzlement

LONG ISLAND: ederal authorities say a Long Island couple has been found guilty of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars through their non-profit organization. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan says 60-year-old Kwame Insaidoo and 63year-old Roxanna Pearson, both of Bay Shore, were convicted Tuesday of money laundering, conspiracy to commit mortgage fraud, wire fraud and embezzlement. Prosecutors say the married couple once ran a non-profit that received public funds for services as providing meals to senior citizens in New York City. Officials say the couple instead stole more than $500,000 and spent the money on mortgage payments, utility bills and a luxury vehicle.
“The defendants’ brazen theft deprived some of the city’s neediest residents of public money for healthy meals and senior citizen programs,” said Joon Kim, the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Prosecutors said Kwame embezzled some of the $8.7 million in federal, state and local funds to provide healthy meals and programming at four senior centers in Manhattan from July 2008 through March 2015. He and his wife were both signatories on a UBA bank account, which they used to write hundreds of checks to themselves, their son and a fake charity that they used to launder some of the money, authorities said. They used the money to pay their phone bills, utilities, wire $300,000 abroad as well

as buy a Mercedes Benz and a Cadillac, according to investigators. To cover up the theft, Kwame lied to the city Department for the Aging in an effort to evade scrutiny for the unauthorized payments and to maintain UBA’s funding, prosecutors said. In addition, the couple was convicted of engaging in a scheme to defraud their mortgage lender by under-reporting their income and assets when they modified their mortgage under the federally sponsored Home Affordable Modification Program. They wrote off nearly $200,000 as a part of the scam. They face 20 years in prison when they are sentenced Aug. 11 by Judge Valerie Caproni.

A spokesman for the Mayor says the officer came to PS 58 in Maspeth Thursday looking for a fourth grader. Meanwhile, schools commissioner Carmen Farina issued a statement.

Bahamas elects Hubert Minnis as new Prime Minister

Cash Plus boss Carlos Hill freed of fraud charges
Kingston, Jamaica WI: he fraud case involving Carlos Hill, former head of the company, Cash Plus, has been dismissed. The matter was heard in the Home Circuit Court on Wednesday morning. Deborah Martin, Mr. Hill's attorney, told RJR News the prosecution indicated in court that, although they had hoped to rely on the testimony of 16 witnesses, only one person had come forward. An additional person willing to testify appeared in court on Wednesday, but the prosecution recognised that that testimony would not be sufficient to prove Mr. Hill guilty of the offence with which he is charged. As a result, the prosecution offered no evidence in court and the trial judge ordered the jury to return formal verdicts of not guilty. Hill was charged with fraudulently inducing persons to invest in Cash Plus and the Cash Plus Group. He was arrested and charged in April 2008. More than 40,000 Cash Plus investors are still owed close to J$10 billion. —————————————
Flooding exposes Jamaica's poor planning and environpractices
T
KINGSTON, Jamaica: hree days of heavy rains associated with a trough caused chaos and disaster in many parts of Jamaica between May 14 and 17, 2017, raising burning questions over poor planning and development, badly designed and inadequate drainage systems, and Jamaicans’ continued careless solid waste disposal practices. As Jamaicans start to pick up the pieces, the government has much work to do in counting the cost of the damage -- including a review of the island's arrangements with the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility, which is the first multi-country risk pool in the world, designed “as a regional catastrophe fund for Caribbean governments to limit the financial impact of devastating hurricanes and earthquakes by quickly providing financial liquidity when a policy is triggered.” Jamaica has not benefitted from the facility over the last ten years, because the natural disasters it has experienced have not qualified for payouts. However, the damage to infrastructure from the rain was considerable. In rural areas, many roads were blocked by floods and landslides, communities marooned and several bridges swept away. There was a landslide (the second to date) on a section of the Chinese-built North-South Highway linking the capital, Kingston, to Montego Bay.

Former Guyana health minister sentenced in US for running 'pill mill'
N
pNEW YORK, NY: oel Blackman, who practiced as a medical doctor and was the former health minister of Guyana and executive member of the World Health Organization, has been sentenced to 50 months’ imprisonment and three years of supervised release for illegally distributing oxycodone, a highly addictive prescription painkiller. Additionally, United States District Judge Joanna Seybert ordered Blackman to forfeit $536,200 in illegal proceeds. The sentence followed the defendant’s guilty plea on August 24, 2016.
Between 2015 and 2016, Blackman prescribed more than 365,000 30-milligram oxycodone pills from “pain management” clinics that he worked out of in Queens, Long Island and Brooklyn. During his guilty plea remarks before Judge Seybert last August, Blackman admitted that, in exchange for $300 cash payments, he wrote oxycodone prescriptions for 1,920 pills of 30 milligram oxycodone dosages to persons whom he knew had no legitimate medical need for that highly-addictive drug. As described in court papers, that amount of oxycodone was worth up to $57,600 on the street.
Venezuela appeals to Caribbean neighbours for help
V
GEORGETOWN, Guyana: enezuela’s Ambassador to Guyana has called on the government of Guyana and other governments across the region to intervene as Venezuela’s political crisis deepens with daily clashes between demonstrators and security forces. “We are grateful for the support of the governments of this region and governments of the world to respect that no ill will is shown by the State. We are grateful to a show support for dialogue which the government has asked as a means of solving internal problems,” Ambassador Reina Diaz said a press conference here on Monday. The Ambassador said the supposed peaceful demonstrations have a clear objective which is to overthrow the legitimate and constitutional President of Venezuela and reverse social achievements of Venezuelan people. According to Diaz, an international media campaign is underway to falsify the reality of what was taking place in Venezuela while refusing to report on the attacks on citizens and law enforcement. “The Opposition funded by foreign aid and with media support have created matrix of hatred, persecution and aggression towards government officials and to all those who sympathize with the Bolivarian thinking.” The call for help follows a meeting of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Foreign Ministers in Barbados last week, during which they called for non-interference in the internal affairs of Venezuela. ————————————

Know Your Rights:
If You’re Stopped by Immigration Officers T his article explains your rights when you are in contact with immigration enforcement officers in New York State. Unless stated otherwise, it applies to both documented and undocumented immigrants, as well as United States citizens. The information in this does not apply to encounters with immigration officers at the border, international airports or at any other port of entry into the United States. The information does apply to encounters with immigration officers inside the United States, including encounters with immigration officers on domestic trains and buses or in your local community, and encounters with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) and border patrol agents after you have been stopped by local police. Remember, what you say to immigration officers can be used against you in court, and it can give immigration officers a reason to arrest you. If an immigration officer asks you questions: You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to answer questions asked by immigration officers if you do not want to answer them. This includes questions about your citizenship status, birthplace or place of residence. If you are asked about your immigration status and you wish to remain silent, you may say: “I have the right to remain silent.” Always remember that even if you answered some questions, you can still decide that you do not want to answer any additional questions. Never lie. Do not falsely claim to be a US citizen or to be lawfully in the United States.
If an mmigration officer asks you for your immigration documents: If you are a United States citizen, you do not need to show any documents. You should say, politely, “I am a United States citizen.” You may choose to show documentation, such as your New York driver’s

You can decide not to answer questions about your immigration status or whether you have immigration documents. If you tell an immigration officer that you are not a U.S. citizen and you cannot produce valid U.S. immigration documents, there is a good chance you will be arrested. If you are a documented immigrant who is 18 or older and have been issued valid U.S. immigration documents (such as an unexpired permanent resident card, also known as a “green card”), you are legally required to carry those documents with you at all times. if you have your valid U.S. immigration documents and you are asked for them, it is usually a good idea to show them to avoid arrest. Failure to carry valid immigration documents is a misdemeanor crime. If you are arrested because you do not have your valid U.S. immigration documents with you, but you have them elsewhere, ask a friend or family member to bring them to you. Never show an officer fake immigration documents or pretend that someone else’s immigration documents are yours.

If you are arrested by immigration officers: You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to answer questions. You can tell the officer that you want to speak with a lawyer before answering any questions. You may say, “I will remain silent until I speak to an attorney.” You do not have the right to an appointed free lawyer, but you do have the right to talk to a lawyer and to hire one on your own. You do not have to sign anything giving up your rights, and should never sign anything without reading it first and understanding the consequences of signing it. Signing a document without understanding it could result in you being deported before you see a lawyer or a judge. Talk to a lawyer before signing anything or making a decision about your situation. If possible, carry with you the name and telephone number of a lawyer who will take your calls. Immigration law is hard to understand. You may have options that immigration officers will not explain. If you are not a U.S. citizen, you have the right to call your consulate or to have a law enforcement officer tell consulate officials of your arrest. Law enforcement officers must let your consulate visit or speak with you if consular officials decide to do so. Your consulate might be able to help you find a lawyer. WADA to remove Isynbayeva from anti-doping position
T
he World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) will remove former Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva from a key anti-doping position in Russia because she is a barrier to the country's compliance with the WADA code. The double Olympic champion has been critical of the punishment of Russian athletes over evidence of state-sponsored doping in the country. She was one of those banned from taking part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Russia has until November to comply, or those athletes will remain suspended. Chairman of WADAa's Compliance and Review Committee says Isinbayeva will be removed by the end of the month. ———————————-

West Indies, Afghanistan to meet in T20Is, ODIs in June
ST JOHN’S, Antigua -- The West Indies Cricket Board has announced that Afghanistan will play three Twenty20 and three One-day Internationals on their tour of the Caribbean in May/June this year. amaican dancehall reggae artiste Frankie Paul is dead. The artiste, whose given name is Paul Blake, died on Thursday night at the University Hospital of the West Indies. His road manager, Norman Reid, who confirmed the death on Friday morning, he said Paul had been in critical condition and in intensive care at hospital after his sickness worsened late last year. In January last year, he underwent surgery to amputate a foot and part of his leg. By Rachel Damarr Williams radarr26@hotmail.com t’s a long way from The Oprah Winfrey Show to the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, where Trinidadian born actor, screenwriter and film producer Paul Pryce will have the World Premiere of his debut film project. Pryce’s 12 minute short film, a suspense thriller titled Come Out, Come Out, will be showcased at the Cannes Short Film Corner beginning May 22. The film was written and produced by Pryce and directed by his longtime collaborator, Ron Morales. It is yet another remarkable career milestone for the former model who shot to international attention on The Oprah Winfrey Show back in 1999. It was during the season premiere of the show that year, that Pryce won the title of “Oprah’s Sexiest Caribbean Man” - a competition judged by Winfrey herself along with male supermodel Tyson Beckford - in which he beat out an elite list of Caribbean male models to win the top prize. Pryce eventually moved to New York City, where he would pursue an acting career, gaining an MFA in acting from the Yale School of Drama along the way. He has subsequently made television appearances in Netflix’s Marvel series Jessica Jones, opposite Krysten Ritter and David Tennant , and AMC’s Unforgettable, as well as numerous theatre credits including Hamlet, opposite Oscar nominated actor Paul Giamatti. He connected with writer/director Morales - whose credits include his debut feature Santa Mesa, starring Oscar winner Melissa Leo – some seven years ago. Morales’ sophomore feature film Graceland won an audience award from the Tribeca Film Festival in 2012 and the “Best Narrative Feature Award” from The San Diego Asian Film Festival in 2012.
Paul Pryce - screenwriter and film producer
The film was shortlisted for the Academy Award for “Best Foreign Film” by the Film Academy of the Philippines, and was released theatrically by Drafthouse Films. Come Out, Come Out - a suspense thriller about a woman who is taken captive by her estranged, jealous husband and must use her wits to save herself and their childis their first major breakthrough as a creative team. Pryce and Morales, who also have several other films in various stages of development, are seizing this opportunity at Cannes to garner interest and funding for those projects. “Of course, being there for the screenings of Come Out, Come Out will be tremendously exciting” says Pryce, “But
beyond that we will be presenting a slate of projects to interested investors, among which is a feature titled The Deliverer, the screenplay of which was a shortlisted Finalist at the 2017 Sundance Institute Screenwriters Lab in January.” Pryce is especially excited about The Deliverer, which would be his first full length feature, and describes it as a crime drama about a fisherman who brokers a deal with a drug runner to traffic narcotics in order to rescue his village from corrupt officials. The Short Film Corner at The Cannes Film Festival runs from May 22 through 28. See also –www.paulpryce.com

Attorney Delano Franklyn to face Jamaican General Legal Council
10 • STREET HYPE NEWSPAPER • MAY 19-31, 2017
T
he publisher of The Agriculturalist newspaper and business consultant, Patrick Maitland, has filed a complaint to the General Legal Council against former government Senator and Minister, Attorney Delano Franklyn. According to Maitland, this action was necessary because Franklyn “maliciously” posted an advertisement notice in the May 7 Sunday Gleaner seeking his “whereabouts” without following normal legal procedures. Maitland said the “whereabouts” notice is of serious concerns to his readers and business clients. “The advert was placed for the purpose of harassing, embarrassing and humiliating me without providing the fact that there were no reasons for placing the advertisement about me,” Maitland charged.
In most cases, no ordinary citizen would be able to publish “whereabouts notices” of anyone in a newspaper without reasonable causes, Maitland said. Franklyn has therefore abused the position and privileges normally granted to attorneys-at-law, he added. Franklyn “maliciously” posted an advertisement notice in the May 7 Sunday Gleaner seeking Maitland’s “whereabouts” without following normal legal procedures.
Delano Franklyn
“I am extremely shocked and angry at Franklyn’s unprofessional behaviour as I have no idea as to his reasons for publicly seeking my whereabouts in the Gleaner. To the best of my knowledge, we have no business or legal transactions in the courts or otherwise. I am not indebted in any way or
form to Franklyn or any of his clients, friends or family members,” the publisher explained. Maitland said he knows Franklyn personally and that Franklyn has visited the AMC Complex, 188 Spanish Town Road, Kingston 11, where his publishing office is located and is listed in company’s publications. “He knows my personal telephone number and the record would show. He has not called me in recent months. He is also a friend on my social media accounts, including Facebook -- the last time checked,” the publisher added. The Secretary of the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council Dahlia Davis on Monday (May 15) acknowledged Maitland’s complaints against Mr. Franklyn.

Women’s Champion For Dedication To Fighting Alzheimer
MOUNT VERNON: he Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter has named Mount Vernon resident Michelle Edwards Brisbane a 2016-17 Women’s Champion. BEAUTY CARE Look out for scalp psoriasis

calp psoriasis is a common skin disorder that makes raised, reddish, often scaly patches. It can pop up as a single patch or several, and can even affect your entire scalp. It can also spread to your forehead, the back of your neck, or behind your ears. You can’t catch scalp psoriasis from another person. As with other types, we don’t know what causes it. Doctors believe it comes from something wrong with your immune system that causes skin cells to grow too quickly and build up into patches. You may be more likely to get scalp psoriasis if it runs in your family.
About half of the estimated 7.5 million Americans with psoriasis - which can affect any skin surface - have it on their scalp. Symptoms Symptoms of mild scalp psoriasis may include only slight, fine scaling. Symptoms of moderate to severe scalp psoriasis include:Scaly, red, bumpy patches Silvery-white scales Dandruff-like flaking Dry scalp Itching Burning or soreness Hair loss
Topical Treatments The first line of defense is treatment you use directly on your skin: medicated shampoos, creams, gels, oils, ointments, and soaps. You can get some of these products over the counter, but stronger ones require a prescription. Over-the-counter products often contain one of two medications approved by the FDA for psoriasis: Salicylic acid Coal tar Source: WebMD

NJ governor race to succeed Christie stands in latest poll
TRENTON -- With less than two weeks left before primary voters cast ballots, a new poll shows Democrat Phil Murphy and Republican Kim Guadagno continue to hold double-digit leads in the crowded races for their parties' nominations to succeed Chris Christie as New Jersey's governor. The Stockton University Poll, released Thursday, also shows the percentage of undecided voters has dropped by 8 percentage points on the Democratic side and 10 on the Republican side since the group's last survey, taken toward the end of last month. Still, most candidates remain unfamiliar to more than half of likely primary voters. The top Republican candidates for New Jersey governor faced off in their first debate Tuesday night. So did the top four Democratic contenders. In the Democratic race, Murphy, a former U.S. ambassador to Germany, leads with 34 percent of the vote -- triple the support of his closest rival -- though he dropped three percentage points from the last Stockton poll. The new survey was taken after Murphy was repeatedly attacked by his rivals in a pair of primary debates. —————————————-

Ex-students return to share warning about drug
D
Lodi High adds prevention programs as heroin use rises ave once dreamed of playing college football; instead he became homeless and spent most of his adult life in jail. Rob had a scholarship to Fairleigh Dickinson University before getting kicked out for fighting and drugs. He spent years living in hotel rooms and jail cells. Noelle turned to marijuana and binge drinking and eventually failed out of college after spending more nights drunk than studying. These are some of the stories that Bergen County residents in the program Alumni in Recovery shared with Lodi and Garfield students. Last week the teens heard the hard truth of former students’ turned drug addicts. Through Alumni in Recovery, young adults are returning to high schools in Bergen
County to share their personal battles with heroin, alcohol and marijuana and what led to their roads to recovery. The nonprofit aims to pass along life experience in the hope of helping teenagers choose a different path. “There’s a line that no one talks about, and once you cross it, there’s no coming back,” Dave told the students. Dave grew up in Riverdale. “I didn’t plan on being a homeless drug addict, spending half of my life in jail. I wanted to go to college and play football.” The speakers also tried to drive home the message that addiction has no boundA Garfield, alumni spoke to seniors on May 11. Garfield High School teacher Denise Rebori hope the students will make good decisions after listening to the speakers. “Some
have a mindset that they will go to college and nothing bad will happen,” Rebori said. “I’ve been a teacher here for 20 years, and I’ve had to attend five wakes for former students.” Some questions the Garfield students asked included what was their drug of choice and if they ever think of returning to their old lifestyles. All three, Rob, Dave and Noelle, said they started with marijuana and alcohol and that it escalated over time. Although in recovery, they admitted to struggling every day with addiction. The program has been to several schools in Bergen County, including River Vale, Old Tappan, Closter, Oradell, Tenafly, Englewood, Ramapo, Demarest, Woodcliff Lake, Park Ridge and Fair Lawn.

Assemblywoman's suit her challenger
MORRISTOWN -- A day after filing her lawsuit against Morris County Freeholder William "Hank" Lyon, a Morris County judge dismissed on Thursday Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce's suit against her challenger in the June primary over alleged campaign finance violations. Assignment Judge Stuart Minkowitz, in an order obtained by NJ Advance Media, dismissed the suit for lack of jurisdiction, finding the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission has primary jurisdiction to render a decision in this matter DeCroce alleged in her lawsuit Lyon broke campaign finance regulations by receiving nearly $100,000 for his campaign from his father's company to purchase advertising.

Father doesn't make the cut When ex-wife throws party!

I
Dear Divine: am a divorced father of a son, 16, and a daughter who is 10. I share joint custody with my wife and spend time with them every week, depending on their schedules. My ex and I get along. When it's time to celebrate one of our kids' events -- birthdays or graduation -- I ask if she wants to have a party for them and she tells me she doesn't, but then my kids ask me why I'm not going to be there!

ADVICE COLUMN BY DIVINE DIVA

We were married for 16 years, and I was always there until the divorce, which was her idea.
When I ask her about these get-togethers, she says it was just her family and my kids' friends. How should I handle not being invited to these events? It hurts me that I'm not allowed to be there for them. I am my children's family, too, and so are my parents, brothers and sisters, who would also like to attend. Should I just have a second party and not include their mother? Please tell me the best way to handle this. -Hurt in Harlem
R
Dear Harlem: egardless of how civilized your divorce may have been, and how respectfully you and your ex treat each other, perhaps you should accept that she and her family may no longer wish to socialize with you and the former inlaws. Not only would hosting your own party enable you to include whoever you want on the guest list, but I'm sure your kids would be delighted to "double their fun." You have come up with the solution to your own problem. -Good Luck
Why Women Cheat ?
hy Women Cheat (The Answers May Surprise You) Cheating is a dirty word. And a fact of life that many couples go through. It’s a painful human experience that can be traumatic for some. Cheating usually happens when a person is not satisfied with their relationship or perhaps they feel there’s something missing. 1. Emotional Connection Many women who cheat complain they have little to no emotional connection with their man. This may be due to him being exhausted from work or having too much on. He may be working so hard, he’s done talking for the night. 2 Feeling Appreciated
When you’re busy at work, or out socializing, you can expect she will get tired of waiting to spend time with you. Leave her solo and you’re giving her permission – and perhaps a reason – to cheat. 3. She’s Received a Promotion
Women like to have projects and goals. When she’s reached a milestone in her career, she may start
to question what to do next. Usually, she will look closely at her relationship. This is where most guys make the mistake of not making a point to celebrate their partner’s accomplishments.

4. She thinks you’ve cheated Revenge affairs are common. Women have them in an attempt to restore self-esteem and feel de-
sirable again. She may not want to cheat but the fact that you’ve done it may weaken her self-control.

Highlighting the opportunities and challenges of local business
W
(Family Features) hile taking your car to an auto service professional is a great way to ensure its performance, the Car Care Council reminds vehicle owners there are few simple vehicle checks that they can easily learn and do themselves to save a little money and help keep their vehicles running efficiently all summer long. With basic knowledge of common maintenance practices and a little time, motorists can inspect the following components in their own driveway: • Check the tires, including tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates a need for wheel alignment. Tires should also be checked for bulges and bald spots. • Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering and brake and transmission, as well as
windshield washer fluid and antifreeze/coolant.

• Check the hoses and belts as they can become cracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show signs of excessive wear. These are critical to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering and the cooling system. • Check the wipers and lighting so that you can see and be seen. Check that all interior and exterior lighting is working properly and inspect and replace worn wiper blades. Keep the reservoir filled with windshield washer fluid. • To keep the cooling system working effectively, the coolant and distilled water mixture for a vehicle’s radiator should be 50:50. Never open a hot radiator cap when checking the coolant level in the reservoir.
As a rule of thumb, the coolant should be changed annually on most vehicles. • Check the gas cap to ensure it is not damaged, loose or missing to prevent gas from spilling or evaporating. • Don’t neglect the exterior. When washing the outside, make sure to include the tires and wheels and the underside and fenders to eliminate any road salt or grime. The body of the vehicle should be washed using a product sold specifically for cars. Wax your vehicle every six months. To learn more about how to care for you vehicle, and for a free copy of the popular Car Care Guide, visit www.carcare.org.
