Crisis on Koh Larn
T
ourist congestion on Koh Larn, situated just 7.5 km from Pattaya, has climbed to alarming proportions. The number of daily arrivals has now reached 7,000 with upwards of 10,000 on weekends, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The problem is that the flocking visitors leave behind tonnes of rotting rubbish which existing services on the island are unable to clear away properly. The casual visitor sees a picture-postcard destination of rolling hills, clear waters and white sand beaches, but there are huge piles of debris in the less-populated centre of the island. The tourists generate about 30 tonnes of solid waste but the city authorities cannot handle all of it. Pattaya City has no adequate landfill of its own and transports much of its own
waste, and that of Koh Larn, to various provincial sites. Plans exist to build a garbage recycling and separation plant by 2016. Much of the recent growth in Koh Larn arrivals is due to the phenomenal development of U-Tapao Airport which is now drawing more charter and scheduled flights to the area. There are already regular flights from the Chinese cities Nanning and Nanchang as well as from Kuala Lumpur. Thai Air Asia plans to launch daily flights from Macau, Singapore and Udon Thani later this month. This year U-Tapao authorities say they will handle 250,000 arrivals, more than double last year’s total. Chinese authorities from their embassy in Bangkok recently visited Koh Larn and expressed concerns about
the unbridled growth. Pattaya City Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome said that his administration had tried to limit tourist numbers by restricting the number of ferry operators and controlling permissible passenger numbers. “But it is difficult to control the number of private boats to the island, he cautioned. There has also been concern from Chinese authorities on the number of accidental drownings off Koh Larn, and maritime officials in Pattaya have promised to erect clearer warning signs about unescorted swimming by the elderly. The overcrowding on Koh Larn could get worse next year if and when the Russians reappear as a major force in Pattaya-bound tourism. It is estimated Continued on page 6

Nightclub raid follows tip off
Banglamung District Chief Chakorn Kanjanawatt led a large group of police and civic officials to Route 99, a nightclub located behind Numchai Home Electronics in Central Pattaya. They found more than 300 teenagers there, some under the age of 14, and a smaller group of adults, many of whom said they had forgotten to bring their ID cards. Police found a pack of prohibited substances and a quantity of crystal meth which
nobody claimed ownership of. A knuckleduster was discovered under a settee. Investigators had received a tip off about drugs in the night club from an informant. Owners of the establishment were charged with a variety of licensing offences and a report has been prepared for the Chonburi governor with a recommendation for a five-year closure certificate.
Money illegally withdrawn
A woman reported to police that her Krungthai ATM card at a shopping mall must have been forged as 35,000 baht was missing from her account. Supawinee Pradabkam, 38, was distressed as she had only 2,000 baht remaining and several big bills still unpaid. A bank investigation showed that the money had been withdrawn in four separate transactions on the same day. The bank agreed to block the card so that the remaining cash would be safe even as an investigation is still under way.

Fifty local police divided themselves into three distinct groups in a determined hunt for illegal or scam foreign labour. The first visitation occurred at the Boom Boom apartment house in Soi Nong Prue where an informer had seen suspicious activities and odd goings-on. However, there were no foreigners at the residence and local residents said a pickup truck had taken away a large group of Cambodians two
hours previously. However, the locals said they had no idea where the truck was headed although the driver seemed to be in a hurry. The hunt resumed at a house in Naklua where 9 male and 10 female manual workers were discovered. None of them could provide documentation from the Labour Office and they will be sent by immigration police to the border of their home country.

Boonsong Srimek, 49, said he had followed one of the dogs to a corner of the field which was producing a nauseating smell. Police said the woman’s feet had been tied with white wires and she was wearing no clothes beneath the waist. News King Power supports sports Old wine new bottles The newly-appointed head of the Constitution Drafting Commission leads a team of experts to prepare a new constitution for Thailand which will be ratified (or turned down) in a plebiscite. Meechai Ruchupan is an experienced drafter of charters and is already the centre of attention both here and worldwide. Given the country’s delicate political situation, can he succeed? Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplume received 100,000 baht from duty free specialists King Power to buy outfits for players and trainers participating in the 33rd Local Administration Student Games. The main event, after qualifying rounds in Pattaya, was held in Sakaew province at the end of October.

In particular there will be a new marketing campaign to trumpet the many attractions of the Eastern Seaboard.

Thai Economic Reporters Association’s reforestation rally returns to PEACH Pattaya Exhibition And Convention Hall (PEACH) was abuzz with around 500 reporters after a car rally by the Economic Reporters Association of Thailand. This annual event, attended by some of the country’s largest newspapers, brought reporters together to raise environmental awareness and to participate in a reforestation activity at Wangchan, Rayong. The event kicked off from Bangkok traversing through a beautiful scenic route of coastal areas all the way to Rayong and finished at the Royal Cliff Hotels Group. As part of its Green Initiatives Program, Antonello Passa (second from left), general manager of the Royal Cliff Hotels Group, presented the hotel group’s tree planting certificate to Thiwa Sudjai (center), the new president of the Economic Reporters Association of Thailand.
Doubts do persist Judging from recent interviews, Meechai is likely to insist on putting in the new, proposed charter a clause that a future prime minister could be an unelected person. The safeguard would apparently be that members of the House of Representatives would need to vote him or her into office, presumably during a terrible crisis. But the very idea of an unelected prime minister can be seen as a slap in the face for the Thai electorate. Similar objections have been raised to Meechai’s idea of a crisis committee which could overrule the government. No senate elections Critics also say that Meechai has indicated that the Senate, or Upper House, does not need to be elected since that would make it a mere copy of the House of Representatives. Although Meechai has stated that the new constitution will contain some democratic features, this will seemingly not be one of them. Thus it can be argued that one of the problems over the past half century is that constitutional drafters aren’t democratic by instinct. Short or long Thai constitutions, which have had an average lifespan of four or five years, have tended to get longer and longer as time has gone on. Meechai has said he wants the latest one to be short and dynamic. The problem here is lack of detail leads to ambiguity which leads to arguments in the constitutional court by those seeking clarification. Not uniquely Thai On the other hand, these are not problems faced only in Thailand. For example, many countries have legislation in place for use in a national emergency. In Britain a civil contingencies act allows the monarch to suspend the right of the individual to a trial and bail for good and urgent cause. In the USA, the terrorism of September 11, 2011 led to an emergency regulation about the American armed forces – their size – which has still not been rescinded. The 2014 quandary It can also be argued on behalf of Meechai that Thailand isn’t a real democracy. Prior to the coup of May 2014, there was ample evidence of this. There were attempts by the then government to force through amnesty legislation (to benefit Thaksin) in the middle of the night as well as expensive populist schemes to ward off opposition to the regime. Also there were nightly bombings in Bangkok and substantial evidence that murders of innocent people were politically-inspired. Ambiguous future Sadly, there is little sign today of the much-debated national reconciliation. The country appears as polarized as ever between political parties which want a return to a general election under the old rules and those who want reforms before returning power to the voters. These reforms will presumably be indicated in the next version of the charter and may well include a new electoral system, as in Germany, which will prevent (or make nearly impossible) the emergence of one political party to rule on its own. Chinese proverb So Thailand remains bogged down in the traditional political dilemma. Should she hold a general election before the end of this year, as recently championed by the new US ambassador, and risk a return to the chaos of the pre-coup days? Or should Thailand wait awhile and seek a new basis on which to proceed? It is certainly tempting to support the ambassador’s statement. The problem is that it has been tried many times in the past and evidently leads to yet another coup d’etat. We certainly live in interesting times.

Crisis on Koh Larn Continued from page 1
For BuzzFeed, five billion views are worth more than 18 billion impressions by Peter Kafka
BuzzFeed doesn’t care where you see its stuff — just that you see it. And it says you see its stuff a lot — five billion times a month, according to a new memo from CEO Jonah Peretti, who says that viewing happens on BuzzFeed’s own properties, as well as on “over 30 other platforms including Facebook video, YouTube and Snapchat.” But wait a minute. Back in March, when Peretti was explaining BuzzFeed’s interest in showing its stuff on other peoples’ platforms, he said the company’s reach was even bigger than that. Much bigger. Peretti said BuzzFeed’s stuff was seen 18 billion times a month on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest. So what’s the right number? Both! It just depends on what you’re counting, says Peretti. That said, he thinks the smaller number is now the more relevant one because people actually consume five billion things a month from BuzzFeed, as opposed to seeing links for them in their various feeds. The 18 billion doesn’t really do him much good, unless people are clicking those links. Here’s Peretti’s explanation, which he sent to me via email today: “The 18B was the total feed impressions on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest. Most of these were links pointing to stories on BuzzFeed. com that users didn’t click, e.g. scrolling past a BuzzFeed link in your Twitter timeline and not clicking it. “The big number of impression raised questions: Why are we publishing so many links to social feeds when people click them less than 5 percent of the time? What if we published actual content into social feeds? “So we started publishing more videos, comics, articles, etc., directly to the feed. The 5B views is the result and represents actual content views on BF.com, app, and mostly views within feeds where people don’t have to leave the feed to watch a video. The distributed views are mostly video views that would have otherwise been links. “So 18B was promos pointing to content, 5B is actual content views. Link pollution is way down, distributed views way up. Does that make sense?” It does. Thanks!
Locals complain about water leak
that charter flights from Russian cities to U-Tapao could double from their current levels by the middle of 2016. Koh Larn itself is inhabited by about 3,000 residents in 1,000 households, mostly clustered around the ferry pier where many of the tourist facilities and restaurants are based. The estimated daily income on Koh Larn is 2.5 million baht. About 9.2 million tourists, domestic and foreign, will visit the Pattaya area this year. The resort is spending 9 billion baht to develop basic transport and infrastructure to serve a future capacity of 15 million visitors annually. City planners have called for Pattaya to become the “Thai Riviera”, competing with the French Cote d’Azur, by early in the next decade. Meanwhile, government statisticians have separately highlighted the growing popularity of Cambodia as a tourist destination. More than 3 million tourists entered in the first eight months of this year, with a jump
of 20 percent for Thai visitors totaling 187,000. Chinese numbers swelled by 26 percent and Vietnamese by 11.5 percent. The most popular venue remains the ancient temple complex at Angkor Wat, near Siem Reap, which is also showing increasing signs of deterioration because of the huge numbers of tramping feet. Tourism analysts say that the
boom in tourism amongst ASEAN members, plus China, will lead to a massive influx to all the region’s tourist destinations. “Pattaya is wellplaced to benefit from this growth but there is now great urgency to deal with environmental issues, especially on Koh Larn,” concluded a Pattaya City spokesman. Meanwhile, the rubbish piles are growing bigger.
New yoga studio in Pattaya
A group of Pattaya business people have opened Pattaya Yoga Studio on Thepprasit Road. Two commercial units have been converted in Moroccan style and will offer specialist courses, including yoga
for pregnant mothers, weight loss, hot and cool yoga techniques, etc. It is said that the practice of yoga helped to calm body and spirit and thus bring about healing and balance in daily life.
Driver refuses to stop car
Even though there had been next to no rainfall, residents of Nong Prue municipality noted that water was flooding part of Siam Country Club Road and potentially causing traffic accidents because of the algae which created a slippery surface. Officials initially said they were not sure whether the leaking was caused by a broken water pipe or a fault in the water treatment tank. Investigators then discovered that both problems were to blame. Workmen managed to correct the problems.
Officers at a checkpoint in South Pattaya were alarmed when a car with a Bangkok number plate refused to stop for a routine search. Police chased after the car which eventually stopped on Wat Tung Krad Road with two teenagers – one is presumed to have been the driver – running away into a wood. Officers decided not to follow them into the forest
area as it was very dark and there was a suspicion the teens might be armed. A search of the car revealed there were four tyres hidden in the boot, two licence plates and several tools which could be used for breaking and entering. A check is now being run to see if the car was a stolen. If so, the search for the two young men will resume once again.

Following three successful years in Singapore, 2016 marks the first time Thailand will host the event. The region’s most respected chefs and influential restaurateurs, together with leading industry figures and international media, will gather for the announcement of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list. As evidence of Thailand’s growing influence on the region’s culinary scene, Bangkok restaurants have claimed the No 1 spot on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list for the last two years. Thailand was officially announced as a selected destination to host an award ceremony of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016 at a media conference held by Asia’s 50

HE Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, minister of Tourism and Sports said, “Thailand is honoured to be the host country of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2016. The support of this event is consistent with the national agenda to promote Thainess, Thai culture, and, in particular, Thai cuisine to the world. Windsurfing receives boost
A memorandum of understanding has been signed by the Windsurfing Association of Thailand and South Korean Ulsan Windsurfing Association to develop ties between the two countries’ sporting activities. Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplume said contacts would be developed by attending competitions in each other’s territory.
Upcoming water shortage discussed Banglamung civic officials held a meeting to update the local community on the drought situation. District Chief Chakorn Kanjanawatta pointed out that, in spite of some recent downpours, the situation was still uncertain. Pattaya Waterworks Authority stated that Mabprachan Lake was now 63 percent full, whilst Huaicharknok reservoir was a mere 26 percent. With due care the water supply to Pattaya should be maintained until mid 2016. However, to safeguard supplies for domestic users, farmers were advised not to grow off-season rice.
Local forest illegally occupied Prapan Puangchompoo, Banglamung deputy chief officer, led officials to Tambon Huaiyai to check on reports that locals had taken over 100 rai to grow rubber trees and cassava. Police collected evidence and took photographs to send to public prosecutors. They said they would wait 30 days to see if any owner of the land turned up. If not, the illegal occupiers will be forced out and the land restored to its pristine condition.
Most travellers assume there isn’t anything they can do to stop the erosion of comforts in the economy section of an airliner. The main problem, of course, is shrinking leg room. The average cattleclass seat pitch, the normal measure of leg room, has gone down from 35 inches before airline deregulation in the 1970s to about 31 inches today. Indeed, there are some budget airlines with a seat pitch as low as 29 inches. These changes – together with others such as reducing the quality of meals, having fewer staff members and introducing charges for food or choice of seat, etc. – have benefitted airlines a great deal and they are now enjoying record profits, especially as the price of fuel has dropped so dramatically. Customers who complain about discomfort in economy class are usually advised to purchase a premium or business class seat. You get what you pay for is the obvious conclusion. Moreover, if you are too fat, you may have to pay for two seats or even be refused boarding altogether. But now groups of consumer advocates are turning conventional wisdom on its head and questioning the assumption that passengers have no right to space just because they paid less for their seat. Two consumer organizations, Travelers United and Flyers Rights, are staging a coordinated effort to change governments’ policies on airline seats. They point out that the steady reduction in the pitch of economy-class seats raises substantial health and safety concerns. The procedures for evacuation, for example, are not properly tested on overcrowded planes whilst the number of health risks, such as deep vein thrombosis, is certainly on the rise. When put to the test, many governments refuse to rise to the bait. In the United States, the Department of Transportation has merely stated that the government should not regulate but instead allow market forces to determine seat sizes. After all, most airlines in the world are private companies. These days, airlines are in steep competition with each other, driven by product differentiation amongst companies. So, the argument goes, customers for airline tickets vote every day with their wallets just as in any other commercial transaction. On the other hand, many countries do already regulate the amount of space allocated to animals in the cargo hold. It is thus clear that some passengers have the right to space even if they don’t happen to be human. Airline critics also point to the history of trans-Atlantic sea transport where, in the 19th century and even later, steerage passengers were crammed together in awful conditions whilst their fares actually subsidized first-class passengers as well as fattening shipping company profits. But the main point remains safety. The hope is that government regulators will act before a disaster forces them to. The seats on some airliners are now wedged together so closely that it’s seen as impossible to evacuate everybody safely during an emergency. Some companies have already appreciated that changes are inevitable. For example, they have introduced economy-plus seats which offer a slightly bigger seat with more legroom but with the same service standards as in cattle class. Meanwhile, some companies are reducing the number of flights on which the elite first class is available. First-class passengers appear to be a dying breed, except on transcontinental routes, and airlines are busy investing in an expansion of business, premium or economy-plus tickets which offer varying degrees of comfort according to what you are prepared to pay. A few airlines even offer business-only class on selected flights. There is little doubt that the business class traveler of today receives a better level of service and comfort than the first class passenger of 20 years ago. Critics, of course, will warn that meddling in the size of economy seats will raise the cost of plane tickets and that government interference will stifle competition and innovation. The argument is coming down to two fundamental questions. Do you really want to fly in an ever-shrinking, unsafe and unhealthy environment that doesn’t respect your human dignity? Or do you believe that the customer can always buy his way out of discomfort by paying more for the ticket in accordance with market forces? But the eventual solution – to maintain choice whilst requiring minimum standards – may not happen in the near future.

The Spice of Life experience begins with a 30-minute Spices Body Scrub – cinnamon, clove, cardamom, nutmeg, cocoa, coffee and olive oil are ground together to produce a warming body polish that increases circulation and leaves your skin tingling. The ingredients along with brown sugar or salt help with the skin’s exfoliation process, improving its texture and making it healthier. After a quick rinse in the shower to wash off the body scrub, it’s time for an Aromatic Body Massage. Choose from a selection of several oil combinations. Lie back and revel in the hypnotic therapy as you breathe in your personal blend of essential oils during a 60-minute full-body massage to relax the body and mind. Smooth and soothing movements will gently lull you into a realm of tranquil dreams, leaving you totally rejuvenated. Thoroughly relaxed and blissedout, the finishing touch to your experience is a 30-minute Warming Mulberry Pouch Facial Massage. The facial massage focuses on pressure points on your face that leave the skin refreshed and radiant.
The spa journey ends with complimentary herbal tea, fruit juices and healthy snacks in the relaxation lounge. Chinese tea and strawberry yoghurt were served on our visit. Hurry and experience the haven of tranquillity in Pattaya

Chandon’s Stripy Sparkler at Infiniti Restaurant
by Mick and Di Barker
The Chandon sparkling wine was flowing on the night of October 9 at Sheraton Pattaya Resort’s Infiniti restaurant where like-minded wine lovers gathered to experience dining out Infiniti style and the glitz of a glass of elegant Chandon, Australia’s sparkling wines. Who doesn’t like a bit of bubble in their glass and the air was crackling with enjoyment as we arrived for the 3-course gourmet dinner courtesy of Chef Pichit Plaibua and his brigade. Champagne goblets in jewelled colours were offered for the first pour of the evening which married well with the well-dressed appetiser of warm salmon rillette. Chopped salmon had been muddled with mayonnaise, white wine, lemon juice and a lot more of chef’s special ingredients and presented on a bed of avocado puree, with coriander, salmon roe and speared with crisp croissant shards. It was a delightfully chic curtain raiser. Next up, with another glass of bubbly, was roasted sea bass with precision cut miniature root vegetables and a creamy mushroom puree all held together on a piquant curry clam jus. Sea bass is not the easiest of fish to sear to exactness but it appeared on our table pan fried to correctness with its glistening, crispy skin adding depth of flavour, especially when savoured with those robust vegetables. Everything on the plate spoke for itself, no excessive chefery, just premium ingredients and professional execution.
The sweet ending was provided by caramelised mango cheesecake (with a chocolate stripe), lime and a tamarind sorbet. The Chandon sparkling was loving this dish and pairing beautifully. The tamarind sorbet was sensational with its sweet/ sour tastes making very good friends with that mango cheesecake with its deep chocolate base. To dine at Infiniti is an experience to remember. Tables are set on the terrace under an inky night sky with a panoramic view of the ocean and islands beyond. Gentle breezes catch the air and the open kitchen affords a glimpse of the chefs doing what they do best in an atmosphere of quiet professionalism. Infiniti is open daily and operates from 11 am until midnight for the bar and from noon to 10 pm (last order) for the kitchen. On arrival at the hotel we recommend you take advantage of a buggy to take you down the not inconsiderable distance, through the tropical gardens to the Infiniti location. Mick & Di The Food Lovers
ANWAR
thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com Stuffed Vine Leaves and Pickles
Authentic Lebanese Cuisine Rooted in Geography and History
Anwar Alhadi is a consummate restaurateur with many restaurant notches on his belt both here in Pattaya and across the globe. His latest enterprise is a stunning Lebanese restaurant, which literally hugs the LK Miracle Suite, Third Road, Pattaya. Step in here and immediately the glitz and glamour of the palatial décor will impress while the food will bring delight with its richness and variety. The cuisine of Lebanon is the epitome of the Mediterranean diet. It is abundant with fruits, vegetables, olive oil, pickles and primarily lamb and poultry. A unique cultural history has helped to make Lebanese food the most popular of all Middle Eastern cuisines. Turkey and France have probably been the two countries which have left a significant stamp and influence on the types of food represented by Lebanese food today. Mick and I have known Anwar for some time having reviewed his previous restaurant on Third Road
and also Cedars, which can be visited on 6th floor of Central Festival Pattaya Beach and is always a busy popular eatery. Anwar however, is certainly unique, its opulent décor dressed out in gold, silver and black could grace any presidential palace. The waiting staff are politely efficient with the male contingent sporting a rakish fez. The restaurant segues across the road to their open-air dining area nestled beside the swimming pool for an al fresco experience. An extensive range of fruit mocktails, fresh juiced shakes and juices, coffees, teas and Singha beer are served but if you are partial to a glass of wine you will need to bring your own bottle with only B.100 corkage charge levied. The menu is bright, pictorial and broad and makes for exciting reading. From various renditions of creamy houmous (chick pea/sesame seed/ garlic paste) through shawarma (shredded lamb), tabbouleh (cracked wheat mixed salad) to chicken,

and a myriad of grilled meats, they all evoke the mysteries of Arabic cuisine. The opulent surrounds are definitely not reflected in the prices here, with dips, salads and appetisers in the B.100 range and all prices are net with service left to your own discretion. A popular mode of eating in Lebanon is the “mezze” way (similar to Spanish tapas). There are literally dozens of dishes here, both hot and cold, that could make up a dinner mezze. What is ultimately chosen is of course to the whim of each individual. We elected to order the mixed selection of cold starters (B.300) with extra plates of vine leaves (B.175), falafel, shish tawook (marinated chicken) kebbe and the restaurant’s signature bread. There is a presentation wizard in this kitchen. Each dish was beautifully decorated with the bejeweled colours of fresh
vegetables, studded with olives and pine nuts and scented with heady olive oil and herbs. The mixed starters consisted of a creamy, garlicky houmous, a wonderful moutabal giddy with smoky mashed aubergine infused with tahini, lemon juice, garlic, parsley, pomegranate juice and olive oil. Fattoush is a traditional mixed salad, healthy and delicious mixed with crisply fried pieces of flat bread. The tabbouleh was super-green, zingingly light and herby exhilarated with piquant parsley, various herbs and cracked wheat. The bread is a must; these big, freshly baked pillowy puffs of flat bread are just perfect for tearing and dipping into the rich, smooth pastes and a natural accompaniment to all the flavours. Dark, luminous green vine leaves stuffed with fragrant rice and herbs, spicy falafel (vegetarian patties of chickpeas) and the national dish of Lebanon, kibbeh, was sensational. It is an emulsified paste of the freshest lamb which had been hand mixed with bulgur wheat and flavoured with lots of aromatic herbs resulting in a Middle Eastern pate consistency which was then deep-fried and served with spiced yoghurt. For meatier affairs there’s the mixed grill (B.395) which serves a huge platter of their lamb chops, boneless lamb, grilled marinated chicken, kebabs, and chicken wings served with French fries. For fish lovers, shrimps or grilled salmon with pepper or Provencale sauce would fit the bill perfectly. Arabic biryani rice
dishes are classic, popular dishes perfect for lunches and suppers alike. Here they come accompanied by chunks of juicy lamb or chicken with peeled shrimp (B.240), lamb shank and many more variations of the theme. There’s a dozen or so Thai dishes to round out this remarkable menu. Last items on the menu before desserts offer Manousah or Arabic pizza. Here traditional flat bread is laden with minced meat or cheese or spinach or thyme or combinations of all four to produce a substantial, hearty filler for those times of the day when it is needed. Did I mention that Anwar is open until 5 am? So we’re thinking an Arabic pizza would nicely hit the spot in the early hours before heading home. Anwar serves original Lebanese food with a passion. So obsessed with eating are the Lebanese that even their country’s name came about because the snow-covered mountains inland reminded them of the pure whiteness of “laban” (yogurt). Do visit and discover for yourself why Lebanese cuisine is considered the jewel of the Mediterranean. Anwar is situated on Third Road about 100 yards after the flyover to Bali Hai on the left-hand side heading towards Pattaya Tai. Then look out for a soi with signs to Anwar Lebanese Restaurant and the LK Miracle Suite.

RESTAURANT OSCAR Sweden Meets the Mediterranean
Newly opened on Soi Welcome Jomtien is a hidden gem of a restaurant. Patron/chef Magnus hails from Uppsala, Sweden and has travelled the world gaining culinary experience before settling here in Thailand with his wife and 3-yearold son, Oscar. Ewan Macglashan is executive chef who has enjoyed an extraordinary culinary career transversing the globe in boats and planes and private catering to the rich and famous from Sydney to the Bahamas to Panama. With two such experienced and qualified individuals at the helm of this restaurant we were anticipating a gastronomic meal to remember and were not disappointed. The menu has been kept commendably concise with seven appetisers, 11 main courses and three desserts plus, of course their dedicated Swedish menu which lists seven much-loved traditional classics. House wine is from Millstone, South Australia (Shiraz and Chardonnay) with the optional table wine hailing from Spain, both are more than acceptable and are priced (per glass) at B.179 and B.109 respectively. Red and white vintages are also available. We launched the evening with a glass of chilled Chardonnay whilst perusing the menu. Starters are creative, interesting and varied and we chose crab ravioli with a white wine saffron sauce (B.150) and a Caesar-style salad with mackerel fillet, again priced at B.150. Eye candy presentation with a taste to match the salad was a riot of flavours in the deconstructed fashion with a Parmesan crisp, a pungent anchovy dressing and a perfectly soft boiled duck egg offsetting the powerful strength of the mackerel. A stellar dish with just a hint of Swedish fusion. My crab ravioli was a big, bold affair encasing the sweet crab meat with elegance and grace and offset by the white wine saffron sauce. Other starters include mussels with Pernod cream and fresh herbs, confit duck croquette with soft-boiled duck egg and a cranberry dressing, and an antipasti platter of roasted vegetables, cheese, olives and charcuterie accompanied by Focaccia bread (B.230); a larger platter is offered as a main course for B.590. Pacific oysters with shallot red vinaigrette or baked a la Kilpatrick are also on the menu. We had now switched to the excellent house Shiraz to pair with our main courses of duck breast with wilted spinach, semi-sun-dried tomatoes, Dauphinoise potatoes plus Cassis jus. I plumped for the chargrilled sesame tuna fillets with a rosemary Mandarin salad. Other menu suggestions include chicken breast stuffed with wild mushroom Caesar salad with mackerel
duxelle, quail eggs with rosemary and a porcini veloute sauce. Signature dish of Oscar’s is Fillet Oscar – milk-fed veal tenderloin with half a lobster, choron sauce (tomato-flavoured Béarnaise sauce) and potato au gratin (B.1,390). It’s a showstopper and according to Magnus the origins of surf 'n' turf is firmly placed in Sweden. I enjoyed the premium-grade tuna chargrilled to perfect pinkness with the required translucent centre and complemented by another fusion concept of Thai basil, and a Chinese cabbage and orange salad. Across the table all was well as Mick tucked into the medium cooked duck enjoyed with dark, leafy spinach and a tranche of those decadent potatoes slow cooked in the oven with lashings of garlic, cream and cheese. Other main courses include rosemary and garlic crusted lamb with baked ratatouille, slowcooked pork loin stuffed with apricot, cashews and sage, and pan-fried sea bass fillets with summer roasted vegetables and a red pepper coulis (B.390). Now for all you Swedish folk out there – let’s talk about your menu. Thanks to IKEA, Swedish meatballs are arguably the most famous meatballs in the world and are standard fare Chargrilled tuna
year-round in Swedish households and restaurants. Here at Oscar’s they arrive with mashed potatoes, creamy gravy, pickled cucumber and of course lingonberries (B.250). Minced beef stuffed cabbage rolls, beef tenderloin cuts sautéed in a Dijon and egg yolk cream, poached and smoked salmon come highly recommended as does the in-house gravlax with sweet mustard sauce served with potatoes in a dilled Béchamel sauce (B.269). We passed on dessert but for the confirmed sugarista cappuccino crème brulee, crepe suzette with Grand Marnier or strawberry shortbread mille-feuille would lower the curtain sweetly on dinner at Restaurant Oscar. This restaurant is a gem. The quality of both the ingredients and professional standards in the kitchen are unquestioned. These people know their food and know how to present it at prices that will very quickly gather them a host of discerning diners. Welcome Restaurant Oscar to Jomtien’s culinary circle!

Book Review by John K. Lindgren
A History of the Thai-Chinese How the Chinese-Thai became Thai-Chinese. From early traders, coolies, kuay tiew vendors to retail, telecom, agribusiness billionaires to Prime Ministers and royalty by way of assimilation, entrepreneurship and hard work. “My life here in Thailand started with three zeroes. No education, no money and no credit,” says Kraisorn Chansiri, born in Guangdong, China, chairman of Thai Union Group, the world’s largest canned tuna producer. A History of the Thai-Chinese is a handsome, crimson red hardcover, 447 pages and 1.3 kilograms heavy tome that covers extensively the tale of the Thai-Chinese from the Ayudhya Chinese year 1351 to the Fall of the Bamboo Curtain 1975 including the booming late '80s, the '90s and the new beginnings the 21st century.

A cryptic message from Bond's past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE.
A stoner – who is in fact a government agent – is marked as a liability and targeted for extermination. But he's too well-trained and too high for them to handle.
Ayudhya Chinese (1351-1707) Geopolitical proximity, connectivity and trade with ceramics, porcelain, tea and silk started it all followed by rapid assimilation of mixed-ethnicity offspring. Children born of a Chinese father and Siamese mother became lukchin in Thai vernacular. In the 17th century a large Chinatown already existed in Ayudhya. The King of Thonburi (1767-1782) King Taksin the Great. The son of a Teochew immigrant and tax collector. This chapter tells story of how a lukchin (half Thai and half Chinese) native of Ayudhya rose to become governor of Tak province and later king of Siam. A sensational tale of individual skill, court intrigue, military conquest and murder. The Age of Immigrants (1855-1900) The torrent of migrants who arrived by sailing junks and steamships, disembarked on the shores of Chao Phraya river. In 1876 it was possible for Chinese from major emigrant areas to travel by scheduled steamers to Bangkok via Hong Kong. The largest group was the Taochew, followed by Hokkien, Hailam, Hakka and Cantonese. Some came as coolies, non-skilled labour, while others were well-educated English speakers. Together they formed an enormous non-native population in Siam. “Of raw imports to Siam the Chinaman certainly heads the list,” Herbert Warington-Smyth, a British national working for the Siamese government from 1891-1901. Divided Loyalties (1900-1945) The first half of the 20th century saw communist and nationalist agendas divide the Chinese communities followed by anti-Chinese sentiments after the absolute monarchy ended in 1932. In 1939 Siam changed its name to Thailand, and the lukchin in military and government services were required to change their names and surnames to Thai. With the rise to power of Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram (Thailand's only Field Marshal) in 1938 anti-Chinese decrees closed every Chinese school and all but one Chinese newspaper the Zhongyanbao. The derogatory name for Chinese: Jekk appears in the street parlance. December 1941 the Japanese Imperial army invades Thailand. Two years later the beginning of the aerial bombing of Bangkok. Finally, the long-awaited end of World War II and the surrender of Japan takes place 16:30 hours on August 16, 1945. In and Out of the Bamboo Curtain (1945-1975) In 1949 it was formally announced, with Mao Zedong as the leader of the Chinese Communist Party and US becomes Thailand's long-time military ally as the communist threat looms over Southeast Asia. In spite of several military coups the Thai economy develops steadily. Again, the lukchins; Chin Sophonpanich (Bangkok Bank) and Puey Ungpakorn (Bank of Thailand) are seen as trailblazers important for the foundation future Thai-Chinese retail, manufacturing and trading empires. The lukchins became also great philanthropists for example the tycoon Udane Techapaiboon, founder of Poh Teck Tung Foundation. New Beginnings (1975-Present) The end of the '70s is a historic transition period for both Thailand and China. The cold war alliance with United States comes to an end and friendship with China is renewed. On page 398 there's a black and white photograph of the Thai Prime Minister Kukrit Pramoj presenting gifts to Chairman Mao on June 30, 1975. The economic boom of the late '80s and '90s creates new
opportunities for many Thai-Chinese entrepreneurs. The previously closed China door is opened by the ThaiChinese agro-industry giant Charoen Phokkhaphan, aka CP Group. The ThaiChinese excels in politics, too. Several of Thailand’s prime ministers are of ThaiChinese origin: Banharn Silpa-archa, Chuan Leekpai, Abhisit Vejjajiva and Thaksin Shinawatra. Beyond Bangkok’s historical thriving Chinatown, in the large provincial towns of Chiang Mai, Nakhon Sawan, Nakhon Sri Thammarat and Chanthaburi large Thai-Chinese communities continue to prosper and Bangkok's Chinatown, Sampeng or Yaowarat Road, is still a densely packed enclave with narrow lanes and alleys with chaotic centuries-old wet markets sparkling gold shops, rice in wholesale and retail, spices and medicinal herbs. Scents you'll never experience in A/C shopping mall. Some say Sampeng is the home to Bangkok's best street food. Finally, in the 2014 Forbes World's 500 Richest People all the top richest Thais are of Chinese descent. They came as Chinese and centuries later they became Thai-Chinese. This remarkable, well-researched coffee table book comes with extensive appendices, footnotes, glossary and maps of Chinese emigration to Thailand including China-Southeast Asia trade routes complemented by chronologies of Chinese dynasties since 1127 and Thai Kingdoms from Sukhothai year 1238 to the present Chakri Dynasty founded in 1782. Sports medicine and some solutions by Thonglor Clinic
As we advance in age, we have more free time to enjoy the finer things in life. Sometimes pain can be a real barrier to surmount. We all have aches and pains, and after exercise or sport these can be exacerbated. For some of us even walking can be painful. Even with proper training and equipment some sporting activities leave you in pain, or existing pain prevents you from achieving your sporting goals. Thonglor Clinic offers a new approach to these problems with the Guna Pain Management. This consists of a thorough examination to define the source of the problem. If need be, other investigation may have to be carried out. The Guna Pain Management Therapy has been developed in Italy following homeopathic principles. A series of injections, patterned upon homeopathic trigger points are isolated and different homeopathic solutions can then be injected in the areas. These treatments are repeated once or twice weekly for 6-8 weeks. Some people benefit from follow-up sessions before tournaments or competitions. Even occasional players will get relief with these treatments. Golfers specially benefit from these treatments when chronic pain is present. Posture and position as freedom of movements are essential for a good game of golf. Guna Pain Management can be applied for a multitude of problems. There are 10 different combinations of solutions that can be applied for each specific
condition. Guna shoulder combined with Guna Polyarthritis offers a lot of relief for the scapulohumeral syndrome. Quite often a full golf swing can’t be achieved due to this condition. Some conditions are muscular in origin, others are of bone origin. Combination therapies help to target the source of the pain. There are preparations for the neck, thoracic, lumbar, ischial, shoulder and hip pains as well as muscle, polyarthritic or neural pains. The doctor can recommend the right combination for your individual problems. The homeopathic approach is a safe method and does not present side effects as do some painkillers available on the market. The Guna method is a form of regulating medicine that teaches your body to heal itself. Quite a different approach to normal therapies that target principally the problem but not the source of the problem. At Thonglor Clinic you can discuss your problems and explore alternative therapies for a multitude of problems. Thonglor Clinic can deal with aesthetic medicine and surgery but also allows you to enjoy your retirement/holiday time to their full extent with the help of the Guna Method. Why suffer or limit yourself? Enjoy life! Thonglor Clinic – Pattaya is conveniently situated on Thappraya Road. For more information or to book a free consultation contact 038 252 055.

THE MONOCLE GUIDE TO COSY HOMES 9783899555608 The Monocle Guide to Cosy Homes celebrates the durable and the meaningful through a collection of homes that tell a story. Most architecture and interior books show houses polished to perfection, manicured to the extent that it is hard to imagine anybody actually lives there: they seem to miss the point that homes are meant to be inhabited. They should be able to take scuffs and knocks and to be part of a community, whether in a Chicago skyscraper or on Australia’s sunshine coast.

Think Thin
Do you scold yourself for not losing weight? How critical are you of the size of your thighs, hips, stomach? How often do you complain to family and friends about how fat you are? Stop it. Stop such thoughts and stop such talk. People who believe themselves to be overweight are more likely to gain weight, according to a 2015 study published in the International Journal of Obesity. The British researchers analyzed three datasets, two from the U.S. and one from the U.K., comprising about 14,000 people in all. All three datasets followed people for at least seven years. In two of the three datasets, about 40 percent of people believed they were overweight; they gained nearly one point more of body mass index (BMI) than those who didn’t see themselves as overweight. In the third study, about
two-thirds considered themselves overweight and gained 0.3 BMI points more than those who didn’t. The results were consistent regardless of whether participants were actually overweight. Have you often tried to lose weight and failed? Such experiences can instill a sense of hopelessness. You might feel you have no control over your weight. So stop repeating the same thoughts and failed attempts of the past. Forget about your weight. Instead, focus on what you do have control over: what you eat and how active you are. Take charge of what goes into your mouth—avoiding unhealthy foods and drinks. And take charge of your activities. Make a promise to yourself that you will walk 10 minutes a day. Yes, even that little helps to improve your life and provides a sense of doing something. You no doubt will double or treble your walking routine in a matter of weeks. The British study also determined that people who think of themselves as overweight are more inclined to binge eat or stress eat. Do not permit negative thoughts to control your eating habits. Think thin and healthy. Simply put, to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you take in. There are only two ways to do this: reduce the number of calories you take in each day, or increase the number of calories you burn each day. Once you learn to do this you will be in charge of your life…and your weight.

All-New FORD EVEREST 3.2 Titanium Plus 4x4 AT The Big, Bold and Powerful 7-Seater Ford SUV has Arrived!
by John K. Lindgren Editor-in-chief: carsanook.com
photos courtesy of Ford Thailand
Named after the highest mountain on our planet, the 8,848-meter Mount Everest, here is the second generation long-awaited Ford Everest, one of the biggest and most powerful SUVs available in the Kingdom. The new Ford Everest is manufactured at AutoAlliance Rayong plant. This vehicle is worlds apart from the first generation Ford Everest, which was more of a pick-up truck with two extra rows of seats. I know because I drove one from Bangkok to Samui, round trip, many years ago. OK, by definition the Everest is also a PPV (passenger pick-up vehicle) based on the Ford Ranger platform or bodyon-frame concept but it sure looks like a real SUV inside and out. Drivability and handling is impressive, too. Design: The new Everest takes its styling cues from Ford Ranger, with a similar facade. But real changes in appearance are seen in the elongated roof line and the mighty 20-inch alloy wheel. The rear impresses with more
premium SUV looks. Maybe little bit of Land Rover. A tad of BMW in the LED tail lamp cluster. The chrome garnish has been added sparingly. I like that. Interior: The cabin and cockpit are significantly upgraded over the previous Everest and exude a sense of refinement. For example, the top of the dashboard trim. Chocolate brown leather and contrast double white stitching. “Like a Gucci, Louis Vuitton bag, said my wife” The cabin accommodates seven persons in three rows with beige leather-upholstered seats under two panoramic moonroof systems. The second passenger row features A/C controls and 12V power outlet. The third boasts of a power-fold seat. In all 30 storage compartments. Total cargo space 2,010 liters with second and third rows folded. And let’s not forget the automatic liftgate. Double, 'click-click' the key fob and the gate opens/closes smoothly. Cool!
The cockpit comes with a multifunction leather-wrapped steering wheel that can be adjusted for rake only, not reach. In the center console an 8-inch touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC™ 2 voice activation system. Call family and friends just by saying their name. Play your music the way you like. More bells and whistles, cruise control, driver information: Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert. Everything at your fingertips. Powertrain: Under the hood a big block 3.2-liter Ford’s Duratorq TDCi turbocharged diesel delivering 200 horsepower and 480 Nm of torque. The engine power is channeled through a 6-speed automatic transmission that can be manipulated in semi-manual mode. In case you wanna go off-road Ford Everest's Terrain Management System (similar to Range Rover's Terrain Response) gives you four driving modes – Normal, Snow (not in Thailand!), Gravel/Grass, Sand and Rock, the Everest will automatically
adjust torque split between the front and rear axles, and throttle response to cope with driving on the sort of terrain you’ve chosen. The system also features Hill Descent Control (previously only available in Land Rovers and BMW X series), HDC which lets you take the vehicle down steep slopes without any need of throttle or brake inputs. More off-road features: ground clearance of 225 mm and water wading capability of 800 mm. The Drive: Out on the road commanding cockpit view, all around. Light steering, which gets stiffer with increasing speed. Acceleration is not overwhelming but adequate with tons of diesel torque when you put the pedal to the metal. Steady as a rock she goes. Enough power on tap and four-wheel drive. Exactly what we needed on our test drive to the North where we encountered torrential rain showers, roadworks, potholes, gravel, detours, bypasses and countless 10- and 18-wheel container trucks and buses for overtaking. Last but not least. Urban drivers with parking anxiety? No problem with Everest's rear view camera and rear parking sensors. You’ll need it.
Especially when parking in tight spaces with pillars and concrete dividers – in the dark. Well, this Titanium Plus does not come with a navigator. But I rather have the back-up camera and sensor – than the electronic map. Verdict: Overall the new Everest really is a cut above a lot of other SUVs in this popular segment. A trendsetter, game changer in the family 7-seater SUV market. Ford's slogan says: “ENGINEERED FOR EXTRAORDINARY”. I'd like to add: “ENGINEERED AND STYLED FOR EXTRAORDINARY”. Ford Everest retail price starts from 1,269,000 baht for the entry-level 2.2L Titanium 4x2 AT variant. Pattaya Today's Automotive tested the top-spec 3.2L Titanium+ 4x4 AT in Cool White exterior color. Price: 1,599,000 baht. FORD EVEREST 3.2 Titanium Plus 4x4 AT Engine: 5-cylinder in-line 3.2-liter turbo diesel Power: 200 hp Torque: 480 Nm Transmission: 6-speed automatic Average fuel consumption: 14 km/l Top speed: 180 km/h www.ford.co.th

Thailand Labor and Employment What are the standard working hours in Thailand? An employee’s working time shall not exceed eight hours per day or 48 hours per week. If the nature of work may be harmful to the health and safety of an employee, the working time shall not exceed seven hours per day or 42 hours per week. An employee must be given at least one day holiday in a week and at least one hour resting time after working continuously for five hours in a day. Can an employer require an employee to work on traditional holidays or weekly holidays? Expat Money Corner by Tim Whiteley
There’s no Silver Bullet There probably never will be a foolproof, one-size-fits-all answer to the dilemma of trying to produce a worthwhile return on savings with minimal or no risk. The idea that a host of risk-free opportunities exists out there that will continually provide a multiple of the returns offered by banks is a myth. The conundrum is this: in order to achieve worthwhile results, money has to be placed in asset-backed investments of some sort. These come in assorted colours but all have issues generally connected, to some extent, with risk and/or liquidity. Let’s take some of the ‘hard asset’ funds that have performed well throughout the slowly disappearing financial crisis. By ‘hard asset’, we mean funds that hold tangible holdings, such as property. As a strategy, they must invest up to 90 percent of the fund in the class of investment they have chosen to base their fund in, because, as for everyone else, ‘cash’ does not perform, so the more invested, the more likely a better return for clients. This is fine until, for whatever reason, redemptions exceed subscriptions over a prolonged period, leading to a liquidity problem, i.e. they have to sell prime assets under forced conditions – far from ideal. The choices they then face are to ‘gate’ (suspend) the fund until cash is realised from the orderly sale of assets, or draw on either pre-arranged or renegotiated finance facilities to maintain liquidity. The fact that a particular fund finds itself in this position does not mean that the investments it holds are now worth less than they were three months ago. The reality is that regrouping to handle such a problem probably means that the fund will come out of this period stronger and better placed to deal with investment outflows. This, of course, does not help those who need to withdraw money during a suspended period. However, to illustrate the case, imagine you own a property in prime central London with a tenant and a mortgage. If the tenant stops paying the rent which covers the mortgage, it doesn’t mean the property is worth any less, it just means you have a liquidity problem and a bad tenant. Excess redemptions occur for a number of possible reasons but often, in part, because investors are used to seeing a steady notch up of their fund value every month with such funds, combined with the whole ‘short termism’ thinking today, often brought about by 24/7 access to fund values, brings some to the conclusion that the first time yields slip, most likely temporarily, it’s time to get out. This short-term view is crippling for most investments that aren’t in the bank. Yes, if you buy and sell the right stock on the markets at the right time, you can achieve significant results, but most investors miss the boat and buy at a ‘high’ and sell at a ‘low’, because their experience in the markets and that same short termism takes over, often brought about by the fear created when a price drops and the unwillingness to look further ahead and ride out the curves. If you go back just a decade, or perhaps two, you would see that those who generally made money on the markets were investors who bought ‘blue chip’ stock and held them for the long term. This is largely what Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway does, albeit on a much grander scale. As with most things, a spread of investments is desirable but not diversification for its own sake. A mix of well-selected, different asset classes to make up a portfolio gives balance and reduces risk. Also, when deciding on your holdings, consideration should be given as to whether capital growth or income is the main objective. Clearly both are desirable but usually one of the two is the prime focus. Property Report Congress in Singapore! What is the Property Report Congress 2015? A dedicated forum for industry leaders, VIPs and Southeast Asia Property Awards winners and judges focusing on how to continue driving growth and excellence in the world’s most dynamic real estate markets. After a brief introduction by Terry Blackburn, Ensign Media’s managing director, the Property Report Congress opened in Singapore last month with it two special keynote speakers. First, Mark L. Clifford, executive director, Asia Business Council, addressed the topic, ‘How to Make Green Development Pay.’ Clifford previously served as editor-in-chief of the South China Morning Post; publisher and editor-in-chief of The Standard, and regional editor of Business Week. He authored ‘The Greening of Asia’ (2015), co-authored ‘Through the Eyes of Tiger Cubs: Views of Asia’s Next Generation’ (2012) and wrote the Council’s book ‘Building Energy Efficiency: Why Green Buildings Are Key to Asia’s Future’ (2007). Clifford was followed by Nicholas Holt, head of Knight Frank’s research platform in the Asia-Pacific since 2012, who spoke to ‘The Outlook for Asian Real Estate in 2015.’ He is responsible for tracking market performance, producing specialist research reports and providing regional commentary on property markets. Holt’s international experience extends across the UK, mainland Europe and Asia-Pacific.
Next on the agenda was the The Leaders Forum which featured insights from industry leaders on the burgeoning success of real estate companies in Southeast Asia and the challenges and opportunities of ASEAN integration. Featured speakers were from the following countries: Malaysia Dato Colin is managing director of the Tan Group, part of the Hatten Group of Companies. He has led the way for the Hatten Group to become one of the top 10 property developers in Malaysia. Indonesia Candra Ciputra, CEO, Ciputra Group, who for more than 20 years has demonstrated commitment to Indonesia’s real estate industry, leading the company’s PT Ciputra Property Tbk as president director, and PT Ciputra Residence and PT Ciputra Surya as director since the early 1990s, among other subsidiaries. Vietnam Nguyen Hoang Tuan, chairman and founder, SonKim Holdings Investment, who with more than two decades of successful leadership experience to his name, is an MBA graduate from the Southern California University’s international programme in Vietnam. He has helped SonKim Group pioneer unique lifestyle-cum-business ideas in real estate, fashion, retail and media in Vietnam, building highly successful partnerships with government, local and international firms. In 2013 he was elected chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Green Building Council, a national non-stock profit organization he co-incorporated in 2007 that promotes the BERDE (Building for Ecologically Responsive Design Excellence) certification. Myanmar Dr. Stephen Suen, founding chairman, Marga Group, whose vision and leadership helped turn the region’s attention to Myanmar’s fledging property sector, mainly through the much-talked about Dagon City 1 project. He had hoped the project would help contribute to the pace and quality of Yangon’s urbanization process. Next on the agenda was Country Focused Opportunity Sessions hosted and moderated by the heads of the Asia Property Awards Judges Panels. The theme of the Break Out Session was the widespread oversupply, political instability, the unstoppable US dollar, China’s woes...and the big question: Will the ASEAN markets be walking dead in 2016? Some key points of the day: How the implementation of the AEC will affect cross-border transactions and investment: - With the AEC's long-awaited introduction only a couple of months away, what should we be wary of and what should we welcome? - The potential fall of China and what that means for ASEAN markets: How big a shadow will

the uncertainty regarding China's economy cast over the region and can Europe and the US, if necessary, fill the void? - The significance of political and economic stability in attracting overseas buyers: Although often cited as two key factors that encourage foreign investment in real estate, markets that have faced instability, such as Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, over the past year have not witnessed a significant decline. Are they really that important? - What the strengthening USD dollar and fall of regional currencies mean for the ASEAN property markets: The return of the greenback is good news for the US economy but what impact will it have here in Asia? These country-by-country focused opportunity sessions generated some interesting points of view and engaging looks into the property industry for each of the involved countries which included panels for Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.

I moderated the Thailand panel, and asked participants: ‘With Russian buyers retreating, sluggish investment from the rest of Europe and the US, and the predicted influx of Chinese investors yet to arrive, what now for Thailand’s major resort markets such as Phuket and Pattaya’? After a positive reaction to this rather negative and challenging query, the final question was even gloomier--although it, too, brought a resounding and positive response: ‘Teflon Thailand, as it’s tritely dubbed, is well-known for its resilience, but with poor yields outside of its luxury segment, is it fair to say that Bangkok’s market is consistently one of the region's least desirable capital cities for investment’? When the Thailand panel’s time was up, it was quite clear to all that Thailand’s top professionals within the panel had strong and clear voices envisaging a positive and strong future for the nation’s real estate sector. All said and done, it was apparent to everyone that Amazing Thailand--The Comeback Kid--was still as amazing as ever!

ZET ESTATE Pattaya & Bangkok Savvy Property Consultants A group of investors from Bangkok with broad experience in Pattaya investment have recently set up their new property consultancy and management office right in the heart of Pattaya. Zet Estate is being run by Siraprapa "Jeep" Raksujarit and her partners Jirayu "Ham" Rungvichaniwat and Chatchawan "Kim" Wattanachote. They are trained and approved by The National Association of Realtors (NAR) which guarantees that they are working in a professional manner with high experience. Jeep has been working as a professional realtor for a Bangkok agency and developer for several years and also invests in Pattaya and Bangkok properties. Ham has invested in Pattaya properties a value of more than 60 million baht in the past two years. Kim, also an investor, is a blogger of Properth website, which contains full of information in real estate and investment. He said, “With our experience in Pattaya investment, we can evaluate price trend, worthiness, and return on investment that
can guarantee you will get a highly potential property from us.” All three saw the potential here in Pattaya, so they have moved to the city and set up an office close to Big C Extra in Central Pattaya. Ham said, “We realize that the customers' needs are top priority. If you want to buy, sell, rent or invest in a property, we offer a professional consulting service which specializes in Pattaya and Bangkok properties. Moreover they have “Zet Care One Stop Service” for all your property needs such as maid service, interior design and home loan consultation. And they came up with 4B of Zet Estate: Best Quality, Best Price, Best Service, and Best Choice. In the past two years, Zet Estate has invested more than 500 million baht in many developments and condos. In these and other condos they also handle the management for over 100 units. They are now promoting projects in Pattaya, Jomtien and Sri Racha. “Pattaya City is a good place for
Ham, Jeep and Kim
Siraprapa "Jeep" Raksujarit investment and a perfect place for second home. The property in Pattaya has a higher rent of more than 8 to 10 percent compared with Bangkok real estate which only offer between 3 to 5 percent returns. Also many Bangkok buyers are looking for a second home by the sea too,” said Jeep. She mentioned that there is, in some areas of the capital, an oversupply of units with 200,000 baht per square metre compared with beachfront units in Pattaya going for 100,000 baht per square metre. Some of their customers are even buying two to three units, keeping one as a holiday home while renting out the other units to tourists or expats. Jeep was also very positive, saying, “Although the developers have been having to deal with the Russian investors, many Bangkok investors realize that there are great opportunities to buy now at a good price with good profits here in the future. The Chinese are also going to be a big factor as well.” “As an example in a prime location a small studio in Bangkok can cost approximately 7 million baht whereas the same studio in Pattaya's beachfront can be bought for less than 2 million baht.” They are now working with several Pattaya- and Bangkok-based developers such as Blue Sky Group, Global Top Group, APUS Development Group, The Urban Property, One Group Development,
Origin Property, and Serene Property and Development. Once they find a suitable unit, they then provide the client with a detailed report covering a survey, all the information and they also calculate the rental returns and the eventual profits on that unit. Zet Estate literally are a one-stop shop as apart from sourcing good investments, they can also arrange bank loans and manage the property down to finding a suitable tenant.
“We will offer you the best deals with the best location to maximize your satisfaction because when you come with us, you are a part of our family, like our slogan: All your property needs we can set,” Jeep concludes. Know-It-All Consider the following conversation between a teacher and his student in the classroom: Student: Teacher, how do I find the area of a triangle? Teacher: Hey, I don't want to just feed you information! I want to teach you how to learn! In fact, I want to teach you to learn how to learn. I want to help you to become a learning learner! Student: You have no idea how to find the area of a triangle, do you? Teacher: See! You figured that out all by yourself! One of the first things I
by Tim Swihart
discovered when I aspired to be a teacher (and a parent) was that it didn’t require me to know everything – much to my relief. In fact, as teachers and parents, we do our children a great disservice if we try to convince them we know all the answers. They need to understand the reality that learning is a lifelong process. “Learning” tends to sound rather boring and formidable when associated with “life-long process.” But it doesn’t have to be. It can be an adventure, and even fun. We simply need to tap into one of the things our children do best
– play and have fun. Child psychologists have long known that when children play, they are not just having fun, but they are practicing and developing skills they will use later in life. In other words, they are “practicing” to become healthy, well-adjusted and successful adults. Play stimulates key areas in the brain, not only for enjoyment but also for maximizing learning, experiencing creativity and, ultimately, selfactualization. Game theory, and its application to learning, is on the cutting edge among educators who are seeking to
initiate their students in the learning process. They are finding it not only engages students to become highly competent in academics, but it also prepares them for life by stimulating creative thinking skills. Consider just a few of the ways “playing” not only leads to learning maximization, but also lays the groundwork for success in life: 1. To play a game, you have to know the rules. Life Lesson: knowledge is power 2. To enjoy the game, you have to know the objective – why you are playing. Life Lesson: life is more rewarding and enjoyable when you know your purpose
Drama tips and awards for GIS students by Mark Beales
A UK-based drama company has visited Garden International School (GIS) to pass on some top acting tips. Performance Exchange made a special trip to GIS to give students in Years 9 and 10 some tips on acting and performing.
Actors held workshops with students who are studying IGCSE Drama and World Literature, with a focus on Shakespeare and movement. For the final lesson of the day, all Secondary students enjoyed watching a performance by the actors.
A GIS student sings at a recent show
Some even helped perform some of Shakespeare’s most famous soliloquies. To see a video of the day, go to www.gardenrayong.com. On another note, GIS students swept the boards following recent drama-based examinations. Dozens of GIS Secondary
students took part in the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) examinations. The results have been released and show that GIS students did brilliantly, gaining the highest grades and the best overall results in the region. GeeGee in Year 11 did particularly well, scoring 99 percent in her test – higher than anyone from any other school in this part of Thailand. Other amazing scores include Shaniya and Seren with 98 and Henry with 97 out of 100. Year 10 students have begun studying IGCSE Drama at GIS for the first time this year, and, based on these scores, should do very well. Drama teacher Mr Lund said, “These great results reflect the huge amount of talent that we are fortunate to have here at GIS, as well as the dedication and commitment shown by the students and their teachers. This confirms again that GIS is the leading centre for the Arts in this region.” Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.
3. To be successful in the game, you have to develop and use a strategy. Life Lesson: success in life is dependent on having a plan and working your plan – know where you are going (purpose), know how to get there (rules, strategy), then go for it. 4. To improve performance in the game, you must learn how to deal with the disappointment of failure and the satisfaction of victory in order to learn from both and, as a result, enhance performance each time the game is played. Life Lesson: both failure and success can be used to strive for improvement and achieve self-actualization. Using games and play as a
part of learning certainly has its place in the classroom. One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is not our knowledge, but rather the gift of learning to learn. I firmly believe that games and play are vital to that endeavor. As Year 7 teacher and part of the team of educators at Mooltripakdee International School (MIS), I am always striving to mold my students into learning learners. I am also trying to determine how to find the area of a triangle, just in case the question ever comes up! Tim Swihart is Year 7 head teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

This & That 50 years of Jack Kennedy mythology
Popular Conspiracy Theories
by Barry Kenyon
Most people still believe that U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s eyeball-to-eyeball war of nerves with the Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev-in which the latter blinked first-- saved the world from nuclear war during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. There was a confrontation on Oct. 24 of that year between US destroyers and Soviet ships carrying nuclear missiles to Cuba. According the legend, the Soviet vessels were within a few miles
of the US blockade line, yet turned away at the last minute. This was the moment when Secretary of State Dean Rusk memorably said, “I think the other fellow just blinked”. This eyeball-toeyeball imagery has made for great drama and documentaries down the years, but has been responsible for some of the most disastrous decisions in American foreign policy including the escalation of the Vietnam war under presi-
dent Lyndon Baines Johnson and the invasion of Iraq under George W. Bush. The imagery lives on. In late 2012 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on President Barack Obama to “draw a line in the sand” about Iran’s nuclear program, “just as President Kennedy set a red line during the Cuban crisis”. The truth is rather different. The lead Soviet ship, the Kimovsk, was actually 750 miles away from the American blockade line, heading back to the Soviet Union, at the time of the supposed eyeball contact incident. Acting to avert a naval showdown, Soviet Premier Khrushchev had turned aside his missile-carrying freighters 30 hours previously. It’s true that Kennedy was preparing for an eyeball-toeyeball confrontational moment but it never happened. There is now plenty of evidence that both Kennedy and Khrushchev were a lot less steely than is often supposed. Thus, transcripts from the White House deliberations at the time show Kennedy was willing to make significant concessions, including a public trade-off of Soviet missiles in Cuba for American missiles
in Turkey and even the surrender of the United States Navy base at Guantanamo Bay. Although there was certainly a dire risk of war in 1962, it was not caused by a clash of wills. The real threat came from the “fog of war”, the danger that as two superpowers prepared for the worst, there might be a breakdown in communication or a misunderstanding which could plunge the world into chaos. On Oct. 27, Soviet troops in Cuba targeted Guantanamo with tactical nuclear weapons and shot down an American U-2 spy plane. Another U2 got lost over Soviet Union airspace and MiG jet fighters were already in the air even as Alaska Air Defense Command scrambled F-102 interceptors armed with tactical nuclear weapons. In the Caribbean, a Soviet submarine commander very nearly launched a nuclear torpedo on American destroyers which were trying to force him to surface. Both Kennedy and the Soviet leader were in real danger of losing control of their own militaries–the very essence of the “fog of war”. When the crisis subsided, Kennedy’s aides obviously sought to spin the crisis by de-
picting the president as a man of decisive action who knew exactly what he was doing all the time. One biographer praised “the mathematical precision” with which Kennedy acted and extolled his “composure, clarity and control.” In time the wider world accepted this interpretation even though, as the White House tapes illustrate, Kennedy himself was skeptical about red lines and deadlines and sought to buy time for a negotiated settlement. President Bush made a fateful error when, in 2002, he depicted Kennedy as the father of his pre-emptive war doctrine. In fact Kennedy went out of his way to seek a deal with the Soviets. Far from “ignoring” Khrushchev’s public offer of a Cuba-Turkey missile deal, Kennedy sent his
own brother to seal the deal with the Russian ambassador to America. As it turned out, the Americans were able to keep this agreement secret for several decades. In deciding how to respond to Krushchev, Kennedy was strongly influenced by his reading of Barbara Tuchman’s book on the origins of the First World War. The most important lesson he drew was that mistakes and misunderstandings lead to unpredictable consequences which cause a chain of events over which national governments have little control and no understanding of the consequences. Once the troop trains started rolling in 1914, it proved impossible to stop them. This is a lesson that statesmen need to remember to this day.

This & That Your Pattaya Horrorscope
by Professor Blunt
Fight Fatigue: 7 Ways To Boost Your Energy by Karen Burns, www.UrbaneWomen.com
We’ve all been there. It’s 2 pm in the office and you feel your eyelids closing and your head dropping over your keyboard. How do you deal with the afternoon doldrums? Many of us reach for sweets or caffeine for a quick boost, but unfortunately those are only temporary solutions that fade quickly – and the crash can leave you feeling more tired than you did before. If you want a real energy boost, we’ve got just what you need. Here are seven smart solutions to wake you up from that after-lunch coma and get your afternoon back on track: 1. Get Wet If you’re at the office, step into the restroom and splash some cool water on your face and neck for an instant pick-me-up. If you work from home or have the time, a quick shower in cool water will get your blood flowing faster and boost your energy. 2. Drink A Glass Of Water Of course, we can’t all leave the office to jump in a shower… But if your body isn’t properly hydrated, you will start to feel tired and run down. The fluids your body loses from sweat and just from breathing needs to be replenished! Drinking a large glass of ice water can help you feel less fatigued. Make sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day – your urine will be very pale yellow if you’re sufficiently hydrated. Added bonus – walking to water cooler or office kitchen for a refill is enough movement to get your blood flowing and wake you up.
3. Take A Power Nap A quick 10-minute nap is all it takes to recharge your batteries in the afternoon. If you can swing it at the office, nap in your chair or in the employee break room; if not, consider sitting in your car. If you’re at home, nap in a chair; lying down makes it harder to wake up and you may end up sleeping too long! 4. Breathe Deeply Anytime you start feeling lethargic, stand up, stretch and take a several deep, cleansing breaths. Breathe in through your nose, out through your mouth, with your eyes closed. This type of meditative breathing increases the oxygen in your blood, and more oxygen to the brain help it wake up. At the same time, you’re lowering your heart rate and blood pressure. 5. Try A Quick Workout It might seem like the opposite of what you’d expect, but if you’re feeling tired, a quick workout can boost your energy and get you through the day. It doesn’t have to be a full workout – a five-minute jog or a couple times running up and down the stairs is enough, say the experts at Fitness Magazine. Having trouble getting motivated? Turn up some music and dance for five minutes. Even something as simple as doing 25 jumping jacks is enough to get the blood flowing and wake up your brain. 6. Eat Every 3-4 Hours When your blood sugar levels go down, so does your energy level. Keep your blood sugar on a steady keel by eating small, frequent meals.
Aquarius (Jan23-Feb22) With Mercury again dipping you are warned to be careful what to say to other people lest you offend them. Admittedly, this will be very difficult for you to achieve as you are universally thought to be tactless, brainless and selfcentred. In fact you are so stupid that when you ring the bell in your local pub you expect everyone will pay for your drinks. Expect physical violence and try to wear a tin helmet whenever possible. Pisces (Feb23-Mar22) Your dream is to achieve inner peace but this will not be easy whilst you maintain an interest in violent DVDs and blood sports. During the next few days you are likely to experience a surge of power although this is likely to be followed by an electric shock of considerable size. You are advised to stay well away from home repairs, particularly lawn mowers and drills. November is a prime time for Pisceans to have accidents or suicides. Aries (Mar23-Apr22) Given the state of your health recently it is somewhat laughable to think of you as a Ram. Recent movements in the Milky Way suggest you are doomed to a life of sexual disappointment unless your sole expectation is to view questionable movies on the internet. Mid November sees someone grabbing your attention, but beware as this is likely to be a thief, charlatan or an expelled member of Rotary. Taurus (Apr23-May22) Your interest in gambling is leading you to rack and ruin. You think an ace in the hole is something to do with gardening and a full house is a sign in front of a popular cinema. As Castor and Pollux are scheduled to combine an orbit in the next two weeks, it is possible that a stranger may make you a tempting sexual offer. As long as you are clear that going is prostitutes is expensive and habit-forming, then go straight ahead. Gemini (May23-Jun22) An inheritance is on the cards this month so you will be anxiously watching for the postman. Venus and Jupiter’s position right now suggests you should not become too optimistic as your family have been spendthrifts. It could just mean that you will have to subsidize an elderly relative’s funeral as there is nothing left in the bank. Single Geminis can expect to meet someone who has had many lovers and needs a medical check-up. Cancer (Jun23-Jul22) Your reading of the heroes of history may land you in big trouble as you attempt to follow them. The invasion of Poland seemed like a good idea in 1939 but Hitler regretted it later on. Mussolini may have attracted big crowds but he went bald prematurely and ended up being hung upside down outside a petrol station. Prospects on the romantic front are poor as you never fancy anyone except yourself.
You should have a meal or snack every three to four hours. Make sure to get a balance of carbs, fats and proteins to provide long-lasting fuel for your body. Cheese and crackers, a small sandwich and juice or a handful of nuts and a piece of fruit will keep you going until the next meal. 7. Go Nuts Speaking of nuts, next time you’re feeling drowsy, grab a handful of almonds or peanuts. They’re high in folic acid and magnesium, two key nutrients for energy and cell production. For additional information on health, romance, fitness, beauty, skin care, hair care and more, go to www.urbanewomen.com.

Leo (Jul23-Aug22) Black eyes are par for the course if you continue trying to pick up people who think you are disgusting. If people show interest in you then you will be well advised to read between the lines. For example, a new friend may turn out to be an undercover reporter or a Nigerian scam mastermind. Until The Heavenly Plough is back on kilter in the skies it may be best if you consider yourself under curfew during the night hours. Virgo (Aug23-Sep22) If you are thinking of organizing an early Christmas party, then invite only true friends and loyal lovers. It is true that probably nobody will show up but your expenses will be minimal and you will be able to donate handsomely to assorted and seasonal charities. It is likely that you will be invited on a long journey soon, but this may turn out to be only a tedious car trip to wave an acquaintance goodbye at the airport. Libra (Sep23-Oct22) Sometimes enjoying sunny skies can lead to you getting wet when an unexpected storm develops. Developing a crush on a member of the opposite sex can lead to most severe problems if they turn out to be married to a mafia boss. You can always seek the protection of an umbrella but this will be of little use against automatic weapons and sharp knives. Your lucky number is 13, another big concern at this time. Scorpio (Oct23-Nov22) You need to be reminded once again that a momentary pleasure can result in a long period of misery. Examples include enjoying a large Chinese meal you cannot pay for and breaking windows in the local police station. The stars insist that a stranger may offer to dump his partner for you, but insist on a full medical and psychiatric assessment before getting involved. Only you can take care of yourself you see. Sagittarius (Nov23-Dec22) Examine your bills very carefully this month as there are warnings that you may be cheated or the victim of a terrible mistake. If you are a red-blooded male you need to check carefully items from a women’s lingerie store. The stars suggest you concentrate on improving your working environment although this may be difficult if you are unemployed or a door-to-door salesman. Capricorn (Dec23-Jan22) Nobody was put on this planet specifically to make you happy. You need to realize that you have to act to make people like you. You can impress others by inviting them for a meal, it is true, but absolutely pointless if you pass the bill to them or expect them to pay for your taxi home. It is sad but true that there are more Capricorns in jail than any other star, but it’s best not to advertise this fact.

Local Sports Steinman, Bass and Stapo go Chabang! With 36 starters, warm welcomes were extended to Olga Giudice, Brian King, Scott Baumgarten, Brendan Moylan, Neil Herd, Mike Quill, Peter Bass, Glenn Henrikson, Fred Starbeck, Theiry, Gerrard, Harry Wzola, Nigel Perry, The Viper and an unusually sombre Graham Rice turned up for his weekly fix. It seems that Graham’s pride and joy rhubarb plants were washed away in the recent floods. The dangling carrot for the big field was Laem Chabang. It seems that with the current quiet season, some discounts bandied around, but in this case, the offer was of disappointment. A rate of 2,300 baht at Laem Chabang is regarded by some as value and were keen to enjoy the offer. The snip was made on the eve of play when a representative of LC advised that all 54 greens were rough cut, cored and sanded (too rough to play) and no further discounts were offered. It was too late to change to another venue and we wanted to play golf! The biggest disappointment was the arrogance of the golf club management and many of us won’t be scurrying back.
Blue skies initially greeted us, but the blue soon turned to a very watery grey, but after an hour of tipples, we resumed play in perfect, cool conditions. With recent heavy rains the fairways provided zero run, however the course played rather benignly as some scores indicated. Bill Steinman, Peter Bass and Mark Stapleton excelled. Mike Quill went awfully close to having an ace and Dave Fletcher was delighted with his podium finish. It was a late tee time so everyone had chance for a bit of extra sleep and after departing the Phantom Bar at 9:30 am we were at the course just 46 minutes later. We asked for the A and B nines and were granted that request so our first group teed off 15 minutes ahead of our scheduled 11:15 am tee time. The course was in fine shape although with carts not allowed on many of the fairways the mark, lift, clean and place rule was allowed on the fairways and first cut although there were very few instances of soggy fairways. The greens were good, as usual, and at a speed of 8.5 were quite friendly to all. The pace was quite good and most of our groups finished in around four hours and 15 minutes. With the good numbers we
were able to have two flights with A flight for golfers with handicaps of 0 to 16 and B Flight for handicaps of 17 and over. There were three places in each flight and rewards for nearest the pins on 2 of the par threes and longest first putts on A9 and B9. In A flight it was big Phill Davies who finished first with 40 points followed by Christian “Pyscho” Boysen in second spot after scoring 37 points. With two golfers on 36 points, a countback was required which resulted in your writer Peter “Blacky” Blackburn (19-point back nine) finishing third from an unlucky Richard “Banjo” Bannister (17-point back nine). Marcus Earp easily won the B flight with a fine 39 points which was 11 points better than Nat Rukkid who came in second. Another countback was needed with two golfers on 27 points and that determined that Larry Gibb (13-point back nine) finished third from his mate John Tallett (12-point back nine) who just missed out.
Marcus Earp & Phill Davies
Winners from L-R: Ernie Picken, Mark “the Viper” Stapleton and Bill Stienmann
Results: A Flight 1st – Phill Davies (13) – 40 points 2nd – Christian Boysen (14) – 37 points 3rd – Peter Blackburn (14) – 36 points B Flight 1st – Marcus Earp (34) – 39 points 2nd – Nat Rukkid (18) – 28 points 3rd – Larry Gibb (21) – 27 points NTP A3 – Peter Gangur B3 – Larry Gibb LFP A9 – Adam Barton B9 – Adam Barton Wan the Winner at Khao Kheow! We had another good field with five groups signed up and we welcomed Stuart Herman from Melbourne, Australia and also
delicious homemade spring rolls. Russell Calcutt paraded D-For (the donation dog) for his collection round and the players are thanked for their continued generosity. The donations go to the needy children of Pattaya. For some serious golf with a dash of fun, The Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. Contact Peter Grey for bookings or any information on 086 150 3086.

Jorn Finnerup from Denmark. Khao Kheow was the venue for the day and after just a 40-minute drive we arrived at the course where it was reasonably busy as this quality course usually is and we were told that we would be playing the C and B nines in that order. In fine weather and quite hot and humid conditions, our first group got away on C1 10 minutes earlier than our 9:42 am scheduled time and proceeded at a steady pace, finding the golf course in good shape, although the greens were quite a bit slower than usual which caught many of us out. The weather stayed fine until we had a 10-minute heavy shower which started on the 17th green but it stopped as quickly as it started and we completed our round in just over four hours and 10 minutes. It had been a tough “slog” for many of us with the course playing quite long off the yellow tees and the scores certainly reflected that. 32 points was the best score of the day which was achieved by Wan Makmul, and in second place was
Wan Makmul
Dipty Narula with 31 points, one point ahead of Dave Edwards in third spot. With four golfers on 28 points it was countback time and this resulted in Dick “Reverend” Braimbridge (17-point back nine) taking fourth spot from Patrick Poussier (15-point back nine) in fifth place and Richard “Banjo” Bannister (12-point back nine) and John Ianson (12-point back nine) just missed out. Results: 1st – Wan Makmul (31) – 32 points 2nd – Dipty Narula (13) – 31 points 3rd – Dave Edwards (12) – 30 points 4th – Dick Braimbridge (36) – 28 points 5th – Patrick Poussier (26) – 28 points NTP B8 – Dave Lehane C3 – Dave Edwards LFP B9 – Christian Boysen C9 – Peter Blackburn The Phantom Golf Society welcomes golfers of any persuasion – low and high handicappers alike, female golfers and beginners. We generally play Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, meeting at the Phantom Bar on Soi Buakhao at 8 am with transport departing at 8:30 am. Breakfast is now available at the Phantom Bar from 7:30 onwards. For bookings or more information, contact Peter on 080 635 1386 or email to petermalcolmblackburn@ gmail.com.

Local Sports Steve sparkles at Crystal Bay by Derek Brook
This week the usual Tropical Golf “Friday outing” was held on Thursday to avoid the holiday rates on Friday the 23rd. Several friendly faces we haven't seen in a while returned to exchange stories from abroad and get caught up with the local news. Pattaya never seems to have a shortage of interesting stories to report. The target this day was Crystal Bay and, after loading up on a great breakfast, 13 golfers set out. Crystal Bay is an underrated course. For just 1,050 baht (including caddie)
to walk a course in good condition with a fair but interesting layout, it’s hard to beat and deserves more attention. Weather for the day was threatening with some rumbling in the distance. Play was rather slow due to another tournament on the course, and the last group had to deal with precipitation as they putted out on 18. So who would shine at Crystal Bay? Two golfers broke handicap and tied for first with 37 points. Winning on countback Steve Truelove (6)

It’s a John Thing!
Dale Shier, John Hutt & Dave Ferris back home at The Club Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees 1st – Andy Makara (27) 37 points 2nd – Kevin Hamilton (15) 34 points 3rd – John Hutt (23) 33 points The verdict on Green Valley is still as last week, things are getting better by the week but still some ways to go before the perfection of the past. We had 16 golfers out today and it was an enjoyable day of golf. We even dodged a bullet with the rain! I don’t know what John Hutt has been having for breakfast, but I want some. The purple patch continues and his 33 got him on the first step of the podium. Green Valley stalwart Kev Hamilton has always done well here and 34 points here today will get you second place. Hope that blue Antigua Monthly Medal shirt gave you a bit of luck mate! Andy plays with us here just about every week he is in town. He has won here several times before and knows the course well being a member. Today was no exception, and being the only golfer today to beat his handicap, Andy takes the gold. Well played to Andy, but get into town one of these days so we can get your picture in the paper! Laem Chabang – Stableford – White Tees 1st – Mark Wood (8) 34 points 2nd – Walter Baechli (16) 32 points T – 3rd – Gary Smedley (20) 31 points
The Laem Chabang Gang!
Winner Steve Truelove (L) on countback over Tom Herrington won the day off his single digit handicap. Good golfing, Steve! Taking second place honors was Tom Herrington (16). Third place was claimed
by Barry Oats (21) with 34 points. Good golfing, all, and welcome back to the rest. Long putts: John Hackett (2), Barry Oats, Mick Coghlan
T – 3rd – Phil Smedley (11) 31 points Today it was back to the Jack Track of Laem Chabang for the last Sports Day of 2015. The C and A courses were the assignment and it was a full field of 20 golfers that gathered on that first tee. It is always tough starting on the C, especially that second hole par-5 that criss-crosses over the creek, but today was the day I finally got a par there! Let’s not bother with the details of the rest of my round, and on to the scores of some good golfers. The dynamic duo of the Smedley Brothers garnered a joint third spot on the podium as Phil and Gary both netted a 31 on the card. Gary has set off back to Oz by the time you read this and Phil will now have to pay for his own haircuts. The multicoloured and multicultural Northshore resident Walter Baechli took sole second with 32 for today’s efforts. Walter is one of those Pattaya characters we always look forward to playing with as he always has a smile on his face. The biggest smile of the day was on Mark Wood who shot a steady round of 34 Stableford points. The Scotsman did little wrong out on the course and I don’t recall he even had one blob on the card. Not everybody needs to get to horizontal! Khao Kheow A & C – Stableford – White Tees 1st – John Hutt (22) 40 points 2nd – Per Forsberg (15) 38 points T – 3rd – Dale Shier (10) 37 points T – 3rd – Dave Ferris (21) 37 points 5th – Sonny Goldsbury (16) 35 points Pattaya’s only Pete Dye-designed course was on the agenda for today and it is a course everybody in town respects. Condition of the course was pretty darn good, given the fact that the week was full of pounding rain nearly every day. We played the A and C tracks again as the B course is still closed. Personally I do not care which of the three nines we play as they are all great layouts and all very enjoyable. This is not an easy course to score on and the fact that our 5th place golfer, Sonny Goldsbury, shot a 35 tells how good the boys were playing here today. Dave and Dale shared third place with very nice pair of 37s on the card. Visiting Per Forsberg had a great 38 for second but still two shots back of Englishman John Hutt. John is definitely having a good run with a good result at the T.Q. Masters and now a whopping 40 pointer today! Take it while you can get it mate, golf is a cruel mistress! Thanks to all who supported us this week and keep it in the fairway! The Golf Club is “The Home of Golf in Pattaya” and located on Soi LK Metro. We broadcast all English Premier League, UFC, NFL, MLB and AFL games live. Our kitchen is open from 7 am to 10:30 pm with our famous Steak Nights on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. You & Your Pets Add a healthy dose of fur and fun to your life If you have ever had a dog or a cat, you undoubtedly know the joy and comfort they bring to your life. Just coming home to find your best friend wagging its tail hello or brushing your leg lovingly is enough to warm your heart. And what’s better than cuddling with your furry friend as you watch TV or read a good book? But sharing your
life with a pet offers more than companionship, fun and a more active existence; it also may boost your mental and physical health. Study after study has demonstrated that pets enhance emotional and psychological well-being. They help decrease depression, fatigue, loneliness, stress and social isolation, particularly in older adults who are more vulnerable to such conditions. And that is true not only for dogs and cats, but also for
birds, fish, chimps and even snakes. Older adults with pets report fewer doctor visits and increased physical activity. Understandably, older adults may be reluctant to adopt and care for a pet. People suffering from arthritis or diabetes, for example, may feel unable to walk a dog several times a day. Your option might be adopting a cat or other small animal that is more independent and does not have to be walked. And to reduce the need to train your new pet, consider adopting an adult pet already housebroken and perhaps more sedentary. Studies also have found that simply petting your cat or dog can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine (the feel-good nerve transmitters in our brains), which can calm and relax you. Pets have the unique ability to calm and soothe. Too, pet owners usually have lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels which may reduce the risk of heart attacks down the road. And people who have already had a heart attack tend to survive longer when they have a pet companion. Pets can help lower heart rates and reduce muscle tension. In addition to easing stress—which can increase your risk of a number of health problems from heart disease to cancer, owning a pet can provide you with a sense of purpose, especially if you are older and live alone.
Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/
Becks
This handsome ginger boy came to us with his lookalike sister "Posh" who has already found a loving new home. He is a very playful and friendly chap who is a little shy with strangers at first, but once he gets to know you he will give you lots of purrs and cuddles.
Precious
This lovely young cat had a bad start to her life when she was hit by a car. She has spinal damage and cannot walk. She can however scoot around quite easily but only on a nice tiled floor so that her legs are safe from damage. Her new owner will have to change her nappy four times a day but has no other special needs.
Oscar
This handsome boy was rescued from Central Pattaya: he had pneumonia and cat flu but made a full recovery. Sadly he has also tested positive for both FIV and FeLV so will have to be an indoor boy and cannot mix with other cats. Oscar is not sick and is expected to live a normal life with regular check-ups.
You’re probably aware of family health measures, but do you know what issues are important to provide for your pet’s well-being? This Pattaya Today feature may help answer some common questions.
Sharing Illnesses
Did you know that dog kisses can make you sick? Contrary to common wives’ tales, dogs’ mouths are not cleaner than those of humans. In fact, their mouths are teeming with bacteria, and may harbor germs like salmonella and campylobacter. These organisms get into a dog's mouth from eating spoiled food or when he uses his tongue as toilet paper. Then, when he licks your face or—worse yet—your mouth, he transfers these germs from his tongue to you. You might enjoy playing kissy face with your pooch, but wash up thoroughly after each session lest you wind up with an unromantic case of diarrhea. Conversely, you can be responsible for making your dog or cat sick. It's not common, but it happens. Pet owners suffering with H1N1 (swine
Ginger Nutz
flu) have passed on the ailment to their cats and dogs. Most often it's mild, but a few pets have died. This is true for other contaminants as well, such as the MRSA “superbug” and strains of E. coli bacteria. So when you or your pet gets sick, sleep apart from one another, and wash your hands frequently.
This happy, healthy-looking, big ginger boy has been with us for what seems to be ages. Sadly he is such a big boy now he is not usually on the normal "shopping list" of the average adopter who may choose his younger friends before him. Shy when first meeting you, he quickly makes friends with anyone willing to spend a few minutes with him.
Cat Corner Tip
Puppies are sometimes rejected by their mother if they are born by cesarean and cleaned up before being given back to her.
Going to the Dogs... Properly trained, a man can be dog's best friend. ~Corey Ford
Not unlike children, cats like to have fun. Unfortunately, they often enjoy playing and romping in the middle of the night…just as you’re in deep slumber. What to do? Plan ahead. If you know your cat will get revved up or hungry when you'd rather be sleeping, play with him in the evening until he gets tired and wanders off to bed for the night. As an option, feed him just before your bedtime to preclude his need to awaken you. Finally, don’t get up. Unless you think he’s hurt and in need of attention, ignore his nighttime complaints. Otherwise, you'll be teaching your cat to keep doing it.
