Effective from December 1, a new law is on the Thai statute books to criminalise child pornography. Previously, the mere possession of child pornography was not considered an offence although downloading indecent material in some cases for distribution was considered criminal. The coup-appointed National Legislative Assembly voted unanimously on the new legislation earlier this year which was based on United Nations recommendations. The act prescribes punishment of up to five years’ incarceration for possession of pictorial or written obscene material featuring children under 18 years, up to seven years for distribution and up to 10 years for production and trade. The Thai justice ministry explained that images of this sort are being traded for financial gain and distributed far too easily on the internet. Ministry permanent secretary, Police General Chatchawai Suksomjit, added that the law is designed to protect children from sexual abuse. The amendment and addition of existing pornography legislation follows Thailand’s signing of the international convention on children’s rights. The materials now outlawed include visual displays, both static and in motion, of sex acts involving young people and children under 18 years. The displays in question also include portraits and drawings and files kept in electronic devices, mobile phones and computers. Courts will have the option of imposing fines of up to 200,000 baht. A lawyer specializing in human rights issues in Thailand told Pattaya Today, “In the past, pornographic material has been introduced into a court case only where the defendant is also facing charges of molestation. What is different now is that possession of child pornography becomes a crime in its own right.” He added that, in Pattaya in particular,

police action over several years had made it difficult for pedophiles to operate as freely as in the past. For example, bars and clubs catering for those seeking underage partners had been raided and closed. The age of sexual consent in Thailand is normally 18 (15 in some narrowly defined circumstances) whilst the Entertainments Venue Act of 1960 specifically bans prostitution with paid partners of any age. However, that aspect of the law has generally been ignored if both parties are adults. He added that the new Thai legislation was in fact less severe than in some other countries. “For example, in New Zealand, it is a criminal offence even to search on the internet for sexual material relating to under 18s.” Questioned about the problems of enforcing anti-porn laws and distinguishing between obscene material and the innocence of a normal family situation where photos are sent to family
and friends via social media, he said that he doubted the courts in practice would have a problem about this aspect. Police General Chatchawai explained that the latest technology would be used in identifying users of child pornography on the internet. This would include the tackling of increasingly-popular software such as a virtual private network which hides the user’s IP address by use of a proxy server, or special software which allows the individual to access what is commonly known as “the dark side of the web”. The National Council for Peace and Order over the past year has banned access in Thailand to many sites deemed undesirable, especially those defaming Thailand or its institutions, and the list has included some pornographic sites. However, most pornography is still readily available on thousands of designated sites and throughout much of the social media. Continued on page 4

Fake police arrested at last
Three Thai men and a woman posing as police officers were arrested in a South Pattaya motel where the suspects were holding a kidnapped woman for ransom. The band also is accused of assaulting and extorting funds from others in the Pattaya area. Police, acting on a tip-off, raided the motel and arrested the group together with a quantity of illegal drugs and paraphernalia, some jewelry, several phones and three fake guns. At the press
conference, police said the modus operandi of the villains was to take potential victims to their room or a safe house. If the luckless victim then tested positive for drugs, he or she would be threatened by the group who variously posed as army or police officers. If the victims were slow at paying up, they would be threatened with violence and left to cool off in a locked room. The leader of this particular gang is said to be still at large.
Baht bus thieves arrested
Four people were arrested by police after stealing wallets and possessions from foreigners travelling on a baht bus. The gang was spotted at the police station by two Norwegian visitors who were reporting the loss of their valuables. Karl Armand Larsen and his wife Sandra Cristina Corbatta-Larsen told officers that they recognized the four people as travelling on the same baht bus earlier in the day. Another two gang members are being sought by police. They apparently operated by sitting next to foreign tourists and stealing whilst another gang member distracted the visitor’s attention.
Drunken foreigner attacked outside club
An Australian visitor was punched as he tried to leave a nightclub after ordering two drinks but failing to pay the bill. A member of staff of the Oasis Club is believed to have struck the man, causing bleeding, as this kind of behavior is just unacceptable. Police are still investigating the incident and are examining a short video clip of the incident. The member of staff Krisana Totamwong, 31, admitted striking the tourist but claimed it was a matter of common sense and self-defence as the guy was inebriated.
Woman jumps Mum panics after to her doom key disaster
A guard at the National Housing Authority’s building on Thepprasit Road, Pattaya, notified police after hearing a thud and discovering a corpse on the concrete pavement at the rear. Police said later the dead body was that of an Asian female although positive identification was impossible at the scene. The guard explained that he had previously seen the woman sitting on a ladder at the ninth floor. He then noticed she walked up to the 12th floor, but thought little of this before hearing the fatal crash.
Volunteers rushed to a pickup truck on Sukhumvit Road after hearing that a mother had accidentally locked herself out of the vehicle while her baby was stuck inside in a state of distress. With the key left in the vehicle, the volunteers worked on the problem for half an hour before finding an appropriate way to open a door. They were reluctant to break a window in the vehicle as this is a noisy procedure which could easily frighten a young child.

News Farmers urged to change tack Banglamung District Chief Chakorn Kanjanawatta has advised farmers to grow crops in the upcoming dry season which do not use a lot of water like rice certainly does. The move comes after fears that there will not be enough water next year to satisfy all domestic, industrial and agricultural needs. The main reservoir at Mabprachan is said to be only a third full in spite of recent downpours. It was also suggested that some farmers might want to diversify their income by selling arts and crafts in local markets.
Loy Krathong is upcoming
Pattaya City has announced that the official Loy Krathong festivities this year will be held on Wednesday, November 25 and will center on Lan Po Park in Naklua. There will be the usual krathong-making contests, concerts and even exciting Thai
folk games. Members of the public are being encouraged to create their krathongs using natural materials because the commonly-used foam is an environmental hazard and becomes indestructible garbage in the sea and on the beaches.

Some commentators believe that the current argument about whether Thailand should, or should not, use a single gateway for internet access – rather than the 10 currently in use – is also partly related to the authorities’ wish to combat obscene material. “Countries like China, which do have a single gateway, have a great deal less online pornography,” said Charles Turner who specializes in international internet censorship issues.
New Jet Ski assistance on hand
The Tourism Authority of Thailand is extending full support to Pattaya City in setting up the Jet Ski Tourist Assistance Centre to resolve Jet Ski scams and to ensure the safety of tourists choosing to rent the craft. The centre is under the control of Chonburi provincial authorities and the marine police. Operators in Pattaya and Koh Larn are being asked to join a non-compulsory insurance scheme of the Marine Department and a sticker will be placed on the front of each Jet Ski to specify its service area, zoning and number. The insurance will cover loss, damage and expenses incurred by renters during their ride. A legal adviser will be on hand at the centre to give advice without the renter necessarily having to go to the police station first. The Jet Ski Tourist Assistance Centre is located at Pattaya Beach (Pattaya Soi 9), Jomtien Beach (in front of the Surf restaurant) and on Koh Larn. The centre is open daily from 9 am to 6 pm.
Ladyboy may be innocent Phoenix Gold to open new course
Cross-dresser Noi Panpradap says he is mystified after a waitress in a Soi 8 bar demanded he pay a foreigner’s bill. Jouko Juhani Salminen, a 53-year-old man from Finland, ordered a beer, which he paid for on the spot. As he was leaving, the waitress asked him for 79 baht for his quaff. The man protested and a violent argument ensued in the street. At this point Noi, who was buying food nearby, intervened and tried to stop the argument which, in turn, led to the waitress accusing him of bringing the customer to the bar. Noi claimed to have been punched twice in the face in the bout when they turned their attention to the customer. Police were called and declared themselves somewhat confused, stressing that they would need more witnesses before deciding on a possible prosecution. The Fin was believed to be a bit drunk and had a head wound.

The Lakes Course at Phoenix Gold Golf and Country Club is now scheduled to open for general play in January 2016. This nine-hole course has been closed since May 2015 while it has been given a multimillion-baht facelift by leading Thai course designer Pirapon Namatra, well known for having created many courses including Banyan in Hua Hin, Santiburi Koh Samui and with IMG the Siam Country Club’s Waterside course. Namatra said, “The work on Lakes has been extensive with new routing; a few more water hazards have also been added. The work was actually ahead of schedule until the violent storms in October meant some of the landscaping needed more attention. Members are now expected to be the first to test out the new layout, and the club plans to host an official opening in late December before all 27 holes will be playable to all golfers in January. Apart from the course upgrades and redesigns, their putting greens have also been increased in size and will become the biggest greens in Thailand. Good news for players is the popular free carts on Tuesdays has been extended to the end of November. The club is also
offering a new one-year membership for a limited number of players at 60,000 baht. For more information, check out the new website www. phoenixgoldgolf.com.
Beach area holes repaired Officials from the Pattaya Public Works Department visited parts of the Pattaya beach area after hearing complaints that some nasty holes had appeared following recent downpours and flooding of the main road. They were accompanied by Pattaya Call Centre staff who had received the public complaints. The welfare party did indeed find several gaping holes and promised that they would soon be filled with sand to prevent accidents and mishaps. City Hall later confirmed that it is policy to improve the beach areas of Pattaya including Jomtien and Koh Larn.
Woman drowns in canal Incensed that his former girlfriend was having an affair with a foreigner, Santirat Raksapakdee, 21, a soldier from Lopburi province, left his military barracks without permission and came to Pattaya to make some checks. He found his ex-girlfriend, Wilailak Pidtatasa, 33, with her foreign contact at a convenience store in Walking Street. Here Santirat lost control of himself and stabbed the luckless woman at least 10 times. She died later in the Memorial Hospital. He made no attempt to run away after the stabbing and told investigators that he was insanely jealous. According to reports, Wilailak had previously reported to police that the soldier had threatened to kill her, but without any follow-up action.
A middle-aged Thai woman seems to have accidentally died after falling into the Huay Tu canal in Sattahip. The dead woman was identified as Korkaew Prasertsang, 50, who was a local collector and seller of plants which she found in wooded areas. Her husband reported that she had left the
house as usual in the early morning but failed to return by mid-afternoon. Because this was unusual, he had telephoned the police. The prevailing theory is that she must have fainted; she had no known enemies and there were no signs of thirdparty involvement.

More motorbike bureaucracy Chonburi governor Komsan Eakachai stated at a meeting that the reorganization of motorbike taxi operatives in the resort is proceeding apace thanks to cooperation between various agencies. Under the rules motorbike taxi drivers are required to register and then receive their official jacket and membership card. Gut-buster breakfast Over a hundred cafes and restaurants in Pattaya offer the full English breakfast, usually on an all-day basis. It has been a staple offering worldwide for as long as anyone can remember and apparently made its first appearance in an English cookbook of 1861. Its popularity is almost without limits and the dish is available not only in restaurants and greasy spoon cafes but in five-star hotels and luxury cruises. It is even doled out to bleary-eyed passengers at the tail end of overnight flights to Manchester and London. The ingredients It is known as the full English – a combination of bacon, sausage and egg with ad hoc additions of baked beans, black pudding, cooked or tinned tomato, mushrooms, fried bread, hash browns, ketchup, brown sauce, buttered toasts, dollops of jam, and a cup of tea. Sometimes there are variants according to size such as “small English” or “big English” or even “very big English”. A huge breakfast may be a “gut-buster” or, less happily, “the cholesterol special”. One restaurant in Pattaya even said it would refund your money if you could manage two “gut-busters” one after the other. The owner had to withdraw the offer after losing a lot of hard cash. Health issues It is amazing that the full English remains as popular as it is in this healthconscious age. A recent report by the World Health Organization’s international agency suggested that processed meats such as sausage are in the same nominal category of carcinogens as asbestos, alcohol, tobacco and arsenic, albeit with lower levels of hazard. The findings a few weeks ago received global publicity but resounded particularly strongly in UK where the battles between health and indulgence continue unabated, with the latter usually winning. You can always start living healthily tomorrow! Health hypocrites The British, at home and abroad, are well-known for their personal ambiguities. Prime-time television in UK accords equal prominence to exercise machines and physical prowess as to belly-bulging cooking shows specializing in chocolate fudge cake and the various ways of frying fish and chips. Gym memberships sell very well in Britain although some practitioners have been observed creeping out at lunchtime to order a mammoth burger with extra cheese or an outsize sandwich squelched with mayo. Urged to eat at least five portions of fruit or vegetables every day by their doctor, some Brits seek refuge in five portions of French fries or multiple banana splits. Back to the ’70s Processed meat has been the butt of comedy since a Monty Python sketch of 1970 which revolved around Spam, the canned meat that gave its prewar name to a newer generation’s unwanted email. Based partly on ham, spam today is sold in 100 countries and, in 2007, was applauded for the seventh billion tin actually sold since its first appearance in 1937. Whether this total included the countless tins at the bottom of the Atlantic, thanks to Hitler’s submarines, is simply not known. All diet sheets tell you to avoid spam. Not only is it fattening, but it’s full of salt. Newspaper campaigns British newspapers love to join the bandwagon to frighten the masses. The tabloid daily The Sun recently proclaimed below a front page photograph of the sausage, “Banger out of order”. Another paper called to full English “the killer in the kitchen”. Almost every health column in periodicals is forever harping on about the evils of fatty breakfast meals, urging instead a return to an apple, a crispbread and some unsweetened porridge. Whether these campaigns are successful is another matter entirely. Gallows humour But warnings seem to bring out the devil in people. One contributor to a national website remarked, “My work is very stressful so I often grab fast food. I do no exercise, always travel by tube or bus and am admittedly rather obese.” He added that he intends to go down fighting: with a bacon sandwich in one hand and a bottle of beer in the other as he sings the national anthem. Another wit commented, “If I had known that smoking was only as dangerous as eating sausages, I would never have given up cigarettes.” The same guy read that red wine is actually good for you and has begun consuming a bottle and a half every night. He believes that the roads to good health can be a most inebriated one. The alternative Mind you, the Continental breakfast isn’t a whole lot better for you: all that butter, croissants, pastries and French bread. A recent hospital survey that changes in diet could prevent 9 percent of all cancer cases was read as meaning that it could not in 89 percent. Another poster wrote, “I don’t care anyway. We all have to die of something sooner or later.” Of course, he is right about sooner.

Oil spill larger this year Rotary Club Phoenix Pattaya on the lookout for classic cars
The latest oil spill near Hua Hin has affected a larger area than the one which hit Rayong in 2013, causing incalculable damage to marine life. The Marine Research Institute said this one is 10 times worse than previously and covers 100 square kilometers. The only positive feature is that, owing to winds and currents, the oil slick is thinner. Nonetheless, it is certain that the sandy beaches and mangrove forest ecosystem of the Gulf of Thailand will be affected. The oil is currently being cleaned up and relevant agencies are tightening sea inspections with the aid of radar technology. The oil-spilling culprits are unknown but, typically, the responsibility lies with tankers washing out their interiors contrary to law. The penalty for this offence is three years’ imprisonment and a fine of 60,000 baht.
The Rotary Club Phoenix Pattaya is looking for classic car owners/collectors to participate in its annual Charity Spring Partyon February 27, 2016. One of the highlights will be a Pattaya Police escorted Classic Car Beach Road Parade with 50 children from the Child Protection and Development Center Pattaya as co-drivers. When the parade is finished there will be a Classic Car Show with live music, where visitors and guests will vote for the Best Car of the Show. The winner will get a dinner voucher and a certificate from the Rotary Club Phoenix Pattaya. For details, contact Jo Klemm, chairman project, at Tel: 092 753 9309 or e-mail: jkl53@jkl53.com.

There are still people alive today who were born before the first aircraft flew across the Atlantic. The warfare in the Second World War had more in common with the battles of ancient history than with the military technology of the later 20th century and beyond. In New York in the 1890s, people were genuinely alarmed about the amount of horse shit which was piling up in the streets from all those horse-drawn carriages. But the problem was solved by the introduction of the motor car. News about technology always sounds like it has tumbled out of the future. German automaker Daimler has recently tested a truck that drives itself. Driverless cars might well be on the loose in North America as early as next year. Singapore is said ready to try them out soon as the small city state is said to be short of professional drivers. Just turn to YouTube to see some amazing videos of cars which drive themselves. Most people right now are likely skeptical about these forthcoming innovations. Yet technology without human intervention goes back all the way to prehistoric times. The first animal traps to make finding food less difficult did not require a person to activate the mechanism. The more sophisticated public baths in Roman times regulated the temperature without anyone pressing a button. In the 15th century, the widespread use of gunpowder and the innovation of the printing press revolutionized society, made the crossbow obsolete and saved the monks a great deal of time since they no longer had to do all that copying. In our lifetime, technology has advanced mercilessly. In the 1970s, London Underground discovered that a driver was not strictly necessary on the Victoria Line as automated procedures could do all the work. But so intense was the public concern that men were paid to sit in the cab at the front in order to assuage the nervous passengers. Man landed on the moon decades ago, using essentially robotic or computerized guidance systems. Missiles have long been able to fly across continents, and even turn left or right at traffic lights intersections, without any human on board. Military drones are in action today with a mobility which would make Flash Gordon and the Emperor Ming turn in their graves. Commercial airliners rely on the autopilot mode a lot more than the passengers will ever know. The cars we drive today are made largely by machines in any case, so it is not so far-fetched to think of driverless vehicles in the medium future. Critics will, of course, be hostile but theirs is a lost cause. Most big-time innovations in the world have happened whether people were in favour or not. Many inventions in fact reflected changes in the art of war and were designed to help armies kill more of the opposing forces. Even medical research was pioneered on the battlefields of yesterday because the dead and the dying were everywhere in abundance and did not object to being dissected. The human race lost the major battle to limit and circumscribe technological progress centuries ago. In 30 years, some say, the actual holding of a driving licence will be an anachronism. Self-drive cars will encourage car-sharing and less individual ownership, thus reducing overcrowding on the roads. In Germany, a Daimler truck has steered itself along a test motorway for the first time. Although crew support was needed, the vehicle performed well and laid the foundations for safe and sustainable road-freight transport in the future. Daimler’s next step forward is to start testing autonomous trucks in real traffic to prepare the technology for mass-marketing. Several British cities have already experimented with low-speed, self-driving shuttles on streets close to regular thoroughfares. In America, several states have passed laws allowing driverless cars and more are ready to follow. One of the obvious downsides will be the massive job losses and both auto manufacturers and dealers will both be severely hit by the winds of change. There will also be legal headaches relating to liability damage and the spectre of rogue computerized cars. Still humans have gone through transport transitions before. When the wheel was invented in prehistoric Africa, the world was never the same again. Luckily for us.

Along Phang Nga’s Andaman seashore lies Khao Lak, a stunning coastline of expansive beaches that bore the brunt of the 2004 tsunami but has greatly recovered. Many luxury and budget hotels are located along the spectacular coast. On the Phang Nga mainland, Khao Lak features a coastal park full of scenic waterfalls. Transport Although part of Phang Nga province, Khao Lak is best visited from either Phuket or Krabi provinces where airports are located.
Because of its location, bordering both Phuket and Krabi provinces, it’s quite easy to get to Khao Lak from either destination. The nearest airport to Khao Lak is Phuket, which is serviced by numerous Thai and international carriers from destinations within Thailand and abroad. Bangkok Airways has daily direct flights from U-Tapao International Airport, the closest airport to Pattaya. Bangkok Airways also flies from Suvarnabhumi Airport along with Thai Airways and Thai Smile. Other low-cost carriers such as Thai Air Asia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air fly from Don Mueang International Airport.
From Phuket, visitors can take a bus, rent a car, or take a taxi (around 1,200 baht) to Khao Lak. Many tourists recommend hiring the services of Boss from Cheaper than Hotel Travel (Mobile: 085 786 1378 or www.facebook.com/ bosstaxikhaolak). It is also possible to fly to Krabi, where it is then possible to rent a car or get minibus transportation to Khao Lak, about a two-hour trip. Although day trips to Phang Nga’s national parks depart Phuket and Krabi frequently, the best way to get around Phang Nga is in a rental car. The attractions around the province are quite spread
out, even around Khao Lak, which covers an enormous stretch of coastline. Public transportation such as songtaew and motorbiketaxis are also rarely found in Khao Lak so it might be a challenge to get around the more densely populated areas or even travel for very short distances. Cars can be rented in Phuket or Krabi airport. Thai Rent A Car offers a wide range of fleet and deals. (Note: the deposit amount from your credit card as guarantee is a minimum of 10,000 baht up to 20,000 baht.) When driving, take advantage of mobile navigation apps such as Google Maps for directions. Visitors traveling from Phuket should take Highway 402 over the Sarasin Bridge. Highway 4 north (left) leads towards Khao Lak, while Highway 4 south (right, but still
in a northerly direction) leads to Phang Nga town. Both Khao Lak and Phang Nga town are around 90 kilometers from Phuket, a journey of around one hour and 30 minutes. Attractions Khao Lak Beach and more A popular sandy beach lined with plenty of rocks, Hat Khao Lak is about 32 kilometers from Takua Pa and is a great spot for swimming, watching the sunset, or just breathing. The hotels and resorts around there are usually occupied with Thai and foreign tourists as they offer an ambiance that works well with the abundant natural surroundings from the serene sea to the shady rows of the pine trees and coconut groves.

Mick & Di The Food Lovers
thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com
THE PEAK OF CHINESE CUISINE
Sous-Chef Prasit Kemphukaew
Dusit Thani Pattaya’s Flagship Restaurant The Dusit Thani is one of the doyennes of Pattaya’s hotels. It has graced the corner of the northern end of Pattaya Bay for over 25 years and its reputation for excellence is indisputable. So it was with much pleasure that Mick and I visited their flagship penthouse Chinese restaurant last week. Soar to the eighth floor and then climb a short flight of stairs to find this most pleasing of restaurants. Decked out in muted colours with decorative touches of gold and burnished burgundy it is a beautiful contemporary space in which to relax and enjoy the signature dishes of Sous-Chef Prasit Kemphukaew formerly of Mantra and Cape Dara Resort. The first of these dishes to
arrive was a salute to the recent vegetarian festival, a riot of flavours incorporating refried bean curd with sesame sauce. If you thought tofu was a bland ingredient – think again. In Chef Prasit’s hands it is transformed into a thing of beauty with a soft, luscious consistency coated in a crisp, glistening coat and accompanied by a delectable sesame sauce (B.250). Roasted duck rolls (B.250) followed escorted by two slices of pink duck meat. These miniature rolls had been filled with hand-shredded duck and crunchy vegetables providing a fusion of textural flavours. The sliced duck was a juicy duo of tender meat with a border of crisp skin for that extra zing. To pair with our Chinese banquet
we had chosen a South African Sauvignon Blanc from the Robertson Winery. Clean, fresh aromas with the distinctive underlying tones of that sunny continent, it made good friends with all the courses. The next dish to hit the table was so picture-perfect it dazzled. An intricate basket had been made out of taro and filled to brimming with big buxom prawns and all manner of brightly coloured vegetables and fried cashew nuts with piquant dried chillies (B.690). The flavours zinged and zooshed in the mouth from sweetness to spicy and back to creamy nuttiness with the cashew nuts. Daring to spoil the symmetry of that taro nest we nibbled around the edge for an exquisite taste of vegetable pastry.
Bah Kot Teh soup (B.250) followed. The name literally translates as “meat bone tea” and consisted of meaty pork ribs simmered in a complex broth of herbs and spices including anise, cinnamon, cloves, fennel seeds and garlic. It was a wonderful piece of culinary engineering to produce such a deeply satisfying broth throbbing with aromatics. Shiitake mushrooms bobbed on the surface and spooning down deeper we discovered meaty pork ribs to nibble and chew. The plates flowed on – stewed pork leg appeared glistening and shiny from its braising in a salty, sweet sauce to become melt-in-themouth delicious with its layering of skin, fat and succulent meat. Chinese steamed buns provided the accompaniment. Snow fish is a deluxe item and here it was served with Szechuan sauce. Decidedly soft, juicy and
Shrimp with Cashew nuts in taro nest

Mango Pudding
yielding the snowy white fish tasted delicious drenched in that flavoursome sauce. Did we have room for dessert? We were convinced by chef’s description of a dessert fit for an emperor and so it was. A sweet mango pudding with its mammary wobble was served with vanilla ice cream, strawberries and an excellent raspberry coulis. Chef Prasit creates exquisite contemporary Chinese cuisine, his dishes are innovative and truly delicious and kudos all round for our 6-course romp through the happy valley of Chinese gastronomy. A full a la carte menu is available. Visit soon. The Royal Cliff’s unique deVine Wine Club delivers the La Dolce Vita Pattaya’s foodiegentsia and oenophiles gathered recently in the opulence of the Royal Grill Room and Wine Cellar to enjoy the latest deVine Wine Club dinner. The host for the evening was the distinguished sommelier, Federico Rainero, export manager of San Patrignano, Falesco and Castello di Cigognola who selected six excellent and varied Italian wines to accompany the exquisite food of Executive Chef Walter Thenisch. Graciously presided over by Panga Vathanakul, managing director of Royal Cliff Hotels Group, these occasions are eagerly anticipated and enthusiastically attended. The first pouring of the evening was enjoyed in the Sunset Terrace Lobby and Bar when the sun was Federico Rainero - Export Manager
just dipping under the horizon as we arrived to be served a glass of 2012 Spumante Brut IGT, NV San Patrignano. Created from Sangiovese grapes it’s a fragrant wine, fresh, fruity and floral making it the perfect aperitif to be enjoyed with chef’s homemade Italian antipasti. We then adjourned to the Royal Grill Room where the glasses glistened and the starched napery stood to attention to welcome the guests and members of the wine club to another evening of wining and dining Royal Cliff style. The first appetizer to be served was Alaskan king crab leg on a bed of dark rye with frosted red currants, quail egg and Yuzu lime powder. Aulente IGT Bianco Rubicone 2014 was the chosen wine pairing. A Chardonnay-Sauvignon Blanc blend, it paired beautifully with the sweet luxury crab and its contemporary accompaniments. Our table loved
this course with its sparks of sharpness from the icy red currants contrasting with the bed of crumbed dark rye, the creaminess of the quail egg and the powdery interest of the fruity Yuzu and lime powder. The next entrée delivered, in our opinion, the star dish of the evening accompanied with a stellar white wine, Vie IGT Bianco Rubicone 2012. A polar white steamed cod fish medallion was crowned with a honey mirror, a puddle of fresh black truffle and served on a bed of sautéed baby greens and mint risotto. An incredible grouping of taste sensations and textures the interplay was extraordinary. The fish fell in perfect shards under the fork into a flawlessly executed risotto with the crowning glory of a precision cut square of aspic honey mirror adorned with a tiny pond of black truffle to deliver that final touch of luxury overload.
It was now time for the big, lusty red wines, the first of which was a Vitiano IGP 2011, Falesco. Blended from equal parts of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese, it displayed all varietal personalities resulting in a blend of distinction. To escort this gutsy wine we were served slow braised Wagyu beef ribs, veal marrow and grilled porcini mushrooms, baby broccolini, homemade potato dumplings and a Barolo reduction. It tasted as good as it sounds with its deep robust flavours of premier beef flattered by the heady mushrooms and tiny gems of soft, buttery veal marrow. A short respite from this pageant of dishes was provided by a rosella sherbet with its slightly tart flavour; it was the perfect antidote to the richness of the previous courses. The penultimate serving was a fine selection of Italian cheese with a fresh fig and pear slivers. The wine chosen to keep pace with these bold flavours was a full-bodied
Marciliano IGP 2009, Falesco. Rich in colour with a complex bouquet and warm with ripe blackberries it was a very graceful wine which loved the vibrancy of the king of Italian cheeses, Parmigiano, the tart, salty gentleness of the Taleggio and the distinction of the Gorgonzola. Dolci was provided in the form of a dark chocolate mousse with fleur de sel caramel and a mini macaroon. A Moscato D’Asti dessert wine was the charming escort to this top-notch confection. The wine dinner was as well orchestrated as ever, the standard of service was impeccable and Chef Walter had pushed the culinary envelope to bring a cavalcade of contemporary dishes that truly provided an evening of edible memories. The deVine Wine Club Dinners are held every few months and members and non-members are welcome. Details can be found on the Royal Cliff Hotels Group website on www.royalcliff.com.

Sports Nutrition – A Key Factor behind every Successful Athlete by Herbalife
increase the effectiveness of training and indeed improve their performance.” If you are interested in boosting your sports nutrition, the main recommendation from Dr Julián is to feed your entire sporting activity. This means that in addition to taking care with nutrition for competitions, you must attend to nutrition during your everyday training, as it greatly impacts your body’s response. And also, your performance in competitions depends on how you perform in your training sessions. Vital Nutrition for Athletes Dr Julián shares the three important nutrients that athletes shouldn’t miss and how they affect performance.
In the world of sports, there is always a spotlight shining on the man of the match: an elite athlete, who brings thrills and excitement to the game. Certainly, behind the success of every athlete, aside from rigorous training and commitment to their goals, is the strong support from their families, team, fans and others. However, we should always remember that proper nutrition is one of the success factors behind great athletes as it can help enhance their athletic performance. Dr Julián Álvarez García, a specialist in sports medicine and sports physiology and a member of the Herbalife Nutrition Advisory Board, says that balanced nutrition is vital for sport players, regardless of their level. “Indeed, aiming for good nutrition should be a way of life for all athletes. They need to intensely focus on the contents and timing of their food, understanding such choices and loosely modelling their routines after that so they can benefit from good health over the long term. And, for sure it will
1. Carbohydrate (and Fat) – Source of Energy During exercise you NEED energy, and most come from carbohydrates and fat, with carbohydrates taking over at higher intensities. Studies have found it worthwhile to eat a meal rich in carbohydrates several hours before exercise, with good options including whole grain breads, potatoes, and fruit. Snacks between meals further boost energy intake. Because you can fill your carbohydrates deposits, choosing the right carbohydrates at the right time lasting the days leading up to a competition. 2. Protein – Best Care after Training You need to eat protein before and especially after exercise, as it’s vital for producing new muscle tissue and repairing muscles that are strained during exercise (which we call adaptation). Typically, only resistance training may require a special increase in protein, but endurance athletes also require protein for recovering and replenishing carbohydrate reserves. Many sportsmen and women may consider it challenging to get the necessary nutrition through traditional
meals, simply because they take time to prepare as well as eat, but optimal recovery is not only a problem of what to eat, also depending on when. So, the sooner, the better. This has led to the increasing popularity of protein/carbohydrate shakes that deliver key nutrition in the form of a drink. Such nutrition is accurate, easy and fast – and so, optimal. These shakes are not all created equal. Some have very high protein content, like those popular with body builders, who have higher muscle damage that needs repairing. Others have more carbohydrates, for athletes needing to restore energy levels, better suiting sports such as cricket. 3. Fluid – Reduce Fatigue, Heat, and Dehydration during Exercise In addition to carbohydrates, proteins, fats and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals), you also need to drink enough fluids. Hydration is crucial during exercise. There’s an oft-repeated principle about drinking at least eight glasses of water per day, but as exercise can swiftly deplete your body of fluid, you should take special care to replace your fluids – including electrolytes – after exercise. Otherwise, studies show you’ll suffer both physically and mentally. And we can take advantage of this “fluid replacement” to carry other nutrients to your working muscles. So, it is an exciting field in continuous evolution. All elite athletes must observe strict discipline when it comes to nutrition to achieve the best results. It has never been easy to stay on the right track, especially when there are so many tasty dishes tempting you almost every day. But stay focused on achieving your sports goal and you’ll know you can do it! Remember, you can be your own champion! This article is brought to you by Herbalife in line with its mission of providing nutrition for a better life and promoting healthy, active lifestyles.

25 – Adele
25 is the upcoming third studio album recorded by British singer and songwriter Adele. It is scheduled to be released on November 20, 2015, through XL Recordings. Following the release and international success of Adele's second studio album 21, she had planned to quit the music industry and go out on a positive note. However, Adele decided to take a hiatus instead and raise her son. During her sabbatical, she suffered with writer's block and rescheduled the album's studio sessions fearing she had lost her ability to write songs. In 2013, Adele had a breakthrough and the material that eventually became 25 manifested, with writing and recording continuing through to 2015. According to the singer, the album's title is a reflection of her when she was 25 and the frame of mind she was in during that age. The lead single, "Hello", was a critical and commercial success, topping the charts in 26 countries including the United Kingdom and the United States, where "Hello" became the first single to sell onemillion downloads in a release week.

OK. First some “Mitsu” nomenclature. Triton is the two-door and four-door pickup truck. Pajero Sport is the PPV (passenger pickup vehicle) aka Thai SUV built on the pickup truck skeleton. This concept enjoys lower excise tax than its passenger car-based equivalents. That's the simple reason you see them everywhere. Anno Domini 2015 despite the sluggish car sales this is Thailand's year of the PPVs and these are the contenders: the new Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X, Toyota Fortuner, Chevrolet Trailblazer and the all-new Pajero Sport. Money matters: the new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is circa 150,000 baht cheaper than the new Toyota SUV Fortuner and new Ford Everest SUV. Design: In terms of styling the new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has released the WOW factor. It's futuristic and bold, called “Dynamic Shield” design. What a contrast compared to Mitsubishi Attrage, Mirage and Lancer passenger cars and the Triton pick-up. Mitsubishi’s latest design language shows off the heavily angular chromed front end, the accentuated fender flares and the outstanding, tapered,

tall vertical LED taillights. Remember Volvo XC90. Maybe too funky for some people but in the night they shine bright, increasing road safety. Two new colors have been added to old usual gray, white and black: Sterling Silver and the trendy Deep Bronze. Interior: The cockpit and cabin in stylish all black. Bolstered leather seats. The T-shape brushed aluminum center console and door panels bring a contemporary deluxe feel. Power seats for both driver and passenger. The chunky, four-spoke multifunction steering wheel and stylish, short, stubby gear selector look cool and is easy to operate. Like the electric parking brake. No pulling! While the competition boasts a sunroof or panoramic moonroof, Mitsubishi offers no sunroof but instead a flipdown DVD ceiling monitor with two pairs of wireless headphones and remote control. I like that. I am not a sunroof man, because Thailand is a hot, tropical country “Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun”. Engine/Drivetrain: The Pajero Sport’s drivetrain is based on the all-new downsized MIVEC clean 2.4-liter turbo diesel mated to a
Impressive Thai Built 7-Seater 8-Speeder SUV About 1.2 Million Baht with All Bells & Whistles slick eight-speed gearbox. Gone is the previous 2.5-liter diesel with a five-speed automatic. Mitsubishi says the new gearbox brings 17 percent improvement in fuel consumption. Noise and vibration have also been reduced. The 18-inch wheels provide adequate traction and grip. The Drive: First impression. This is a smooth machine with plenty of torque on tap. Hit the highway and FUN starts. Commanding view like all PPVs. Step on it! Two hands on those delicious aluminum Ferrari-style paddle shifters for up and down shifting and cruise control when needed. In the traffic jam there's a fine entertainment system DVD, Bluetooth, etc., and a bilingual navigation/map. Safety features: LED daylight running lights, dual knee and curtain airbags, plus ABS, BA and EDB systems. I must confess that of all the pickup trucks and PPVs I have driven, including the previous 3-liter V6 Pajero Sport, this new Pajero Sport GT cuts the mustard. Verdict: Amazing piece of automotive innovation. Inside/Out. What a development from the 1996
predecessor utilitarian Mitsubishi G-Wagon. Whether you call it a Thai built SUV or PPV, the new Pajero Sport GT is a strong contender – maybe a winner in this popular segment. South East Asia Property Awards 2015 The South East Asia Property Awards 2015, now in its fifth successful year, is the largest, most prestigious and certainly the most recognized industry awards event in the region. The event last month at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore attracted nearly 400 of the best known and up-and-coming names in real estate. Last year’s winners included Ayala Land Inc, Pace Development, Vingroup, Sinar Mas Land, Frasers Centerpoint, Major Development, Sunway Integrated Properties and CapitaLand. The Lippo Group’s James Riady was awarded the distinguished title and honor as the Real Estate Personality of the Year 2014. This year’s gala event also featured the inaugural Property Report Congress--a unique opportunity to celebrate the region's established and emerging property markets by meeting industry leaders who are redefining those markets. A record was set when the Far East Organization became the first company ever to win the prestigious Best Developer (South East Asia) title twice at the glamorous blacktie ceremony after previously claiming the honor in 2011. Speaking to the guests, Vincent Lee, assistant director of the Far East Organization, said, “We’re really grateful for this award and we want to show our appreciation to the South East Asia Property Awards for believing in what the Far East Organization is doing.” That was not all for the Far East Organization as they took home four domestic awards including
Best Commercial Development for SBF Centre, a 31-storey sustainable development in the heart of Singapore’s core central business district, and The Green Mark Platinum-certified project that was ultimately declared the Best Green Development (South East Asia), setting the bar for the region’s mixed-use segment that is becoming more involved in the green movement. Still another Singapore industry giant winning the coveted Best Condominium (South East Asia) trophy award was GuocoLand for their freehold project in Singapore’s Garden City District 10, beating award-winning luxury and midrange condo projects in Myanmar, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Overall, it was a fantastic evening and year for Singapore and Malaysia as they accepted four awards each at Ensign Media’s most respected South East Asia real estate award event. Another milestone was the fact that the Asia Property Awards was also celebrating its tenth year. Other big winners were Malaysia’s prized hotel property, WOLO Bukit Bintang by Wonderful Vantage Sdn Bhd, which was judged the Best Commercial Development (South East Asia), while the outstanding Senibong Cove by Front Concept Sdn Bhd was declared champion in the Best Villa/Housing Development (South East Asia) category. At the grand finals, these same two Malaysia-based projects also accepted one design award each.

Following the inaugural Property Report Congress 2015, Asia’s industry-leading monthly publication, Property Report, presented special trophies to properties in Indonesia, while the Philippines and Thailand went to center stage for one trophy each as other deserving finalists from Vietnam and Myanmar cheered their ASEAN partners on. This year’s South East Asia Property Awards featured Mink Tan, principal architect and chief design officer of MINKKE, as leader of the independent judging panel. Tan, a veteran architect and designer, said, “The biggest change in the region’s property sector in the past five years has been the speed with which the developing countries have started to catch up with the developed ones. “You can see developments from the less developed regions now brimming with new ideas, though at times borrowed from the more developed countries, but soon will be moving beyond just copying the West or the likes.” Once again entries were submitted by industry players as well as the general public and, once again, administering the process was BDO International—one of the world’s largest accounting firms, universally known for its fairness and transparency. In Southeast Asia the firm is represented by Paul Ashburn. Speaking before the Shangri-La Hotel’s gala ballroom dinner guests, Terry Blackburn, CEO of Ensign Media and publisher of Property Report magazine, said, “This evening is the end of a year-long journey

LEGAL ADVICE
by Magna Carta Law Office
Thailand Intercountry Adoption of Minor Where does the application for intercountry adoption take place? Foreign applicants who intend to adopt a Thai child must make the adoption application through the social welfare authority (competent authority) in their country or the nongovernmental child welfare organization which is licensed by their government to handle the matter of intercountry adoption. Thailand intercountry adoption is operated in accordance with the Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Cooperation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption. Under Thailand’s Child Adoption Act of 1979, all intercountry adoption applications have to be processed through the Department of Social Development and Welfare (DSDW referred to as a competent authority) or nongovernmental child welfare agencies (authorized agencies) which are particularly authorized by DSDW and under the direction of the Child Adoption Board of Thailand. What are the preliminary qualifications of a prospective foreign adoptive parent? 1. The adoptive parent must be more than 25 years old and must be at least 15 years older than the person to be adopted. 2. A prospective foreign adoptive parent must have a legitimate spouse in case of applying as a couple or family. 3. The adoptive parent must be eligible to adopt a child from Thailand under the laws of their home country. What are the Thai regulations regarding the adopted children? 1. The person to be adopted who is more than 15 years old must give his or her consent. 2. If the person to be adopted is a minor, consent must be received from: • both parents if they are still alive; • either parent if only one is alive or has custody; • the legal representative or the prosecutor who has made a request to the court to approve the adoption; • the person in charge of the hospital or other institution approved by the local governmental agency; • the person who has taken care of an abandoned child for more than one year. 3. The adoptive parent and the person to be adopted must receive consent from their spouse except where the spouse is not capable of giving consent or the spouse has left the area and his or her whereabouts are unknown for more than one year. 4. A minor cannot be an adopted child of someone else, except if the child has been adopted by your spouse. 5. It is not possible to adopt more than one child at a time, except for twins, siblings, or in cases of adopting the children of the applicant's Thai spouse.
6. DSDW advises that it is extremely unlikely that an abandoned child under the age of one year would be available for foreign adoption. According to the Civil and Commercial Code of Thailand, a minor is a person under the age of 20. What are the benefits of the registration of adoption? Once registered, the adoption is recognized by the Thai government, and the adoptive parents and the adopted person gain the benefits of adoption. 1. The adopted child has the right to use the last name and inherit the assets of the adoptive parent. However, the adoptive parent cannot inherit the assets of the adopted person. 2. From the date of registration, the adoptive parent has the authority to raise the adopted child as his or her own legal child. 3. From the date of registration, biological parents no longer have power or rights over the child. Are the foreign adoptive parents required to travel to Thailand? According to the Ministerial Regulation, both of the prospective adoptive parents have to travel to Thailand. In case the pre-adoption placement is approved, DSDW will set a specific appointment for the prospective adoptive parents to present themselves to the Child Adoption Board in Thailand for interview, and to receive the child for pre-adoption placement. Are the foreign adoptive parents who do not have permanent residence in a foreign country eligible for intercountry adoption? For applicants who are temporarily residing in a foreign country, the Home Study Report will have to be made and their eligibility will have to be assessed and confirmed by the competent authority in their country of residence. Unless the applicants have been living in that country for at least six months when submitting their application and will remain in that country until the adoption is finalized, assistance may be needed from the competent authority in the country where they have temporarily resided. The competent authority may prepare the Home Study Report and supervise the pre-adoption placement when due. The eligibility for intercountry adoption may be confirmed by the embassy of their country of residence in such country. Furthermore, the permission for the child to be adopted to enter the countries has to be confirmed to DSDW by the concerned authorities of both countries.
Expat Money Corner by Tim Whiteley
Succession Planning... Expatriate Financial Planning, back to basics… In our earlier articles we covered asset protection structures through the use of offshore trusts, and inheritance planning vehicles. Often overlooked however, are the most basic foundations of any financial planning review, especially relevant for international families taking up residence overseas, or already living outside their home country. Could your family survive…? This question is an obvious one but we are always surprised at how many expatriate families ignore international life assurance. This is even more important for cross-cultural relationships and marriages. For a myriad of good reasons, most expatriates will retain the bulk of their capital, bank accounts and investment portfolios, outside of the country that they are living in. If the survivor(s) is not aware of the existence and/or location of those assets they could remain undiscovered for years.
In any event, on the death of the person named on the account, (and if not in joint names and/or with named beneficiaries) those assets will be frozen in each country that they are based in, and will then have to pass through probate in the domicile country of the deceased, which more often than not, is the country they were born in. This could take a year or more, not to mention the logistics involved, and no one gets any money in the meantime – a huge burden on loved ones. The bills keep coming in, school fees still need to be paid, and in many cases the survivor will not be able to generate an income level sufficient to meet initial and ongoing needs. This could lead to a severe downgrading of current lifestyle and a significant depletion of capital. Check that any existing life protection you have in place already still covers you whilst living overseas. Many expatriates assume that the life cover they took out years ago in their home country will still cover them in Asia. This may be so for a few but the vast majority of ‘home country’ insurance companies will not extend cover to overseas residents, and will certainly not take the trouble to tell you so until it’s too late. Of course no one knows when their time will come. However, knowing that you have taken steps to help those you leave behind to cope if the worst should happen can be hugely reassuring to all involved. A local will for local assets, offshore life cover with named beneficiaries, and offshore assets assigned into a suitably worded trust are the basics. New Products Recently, some new providers of international life assurance have appeared in the market place with competitive rates for both term and whole life insurance. These can be written as a single life plan or on a joint life basis and can be incorporated in a trust to provide solutions for a variety of Inheritance issues. Senior government representatives from more than 30 Asia-Pacific countries ended three days of United Nations-sponsored talks in Bangkok, calling for strengthened regional cooperation in trade and investment with a special focus on realizing the role of trade and investment in achieving the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Fourth Session of the Committee on Trade and Investment, a regional policymakers’ forum convened biannually by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), called for continued work in trade facilitation and paperless trade, a renewed focus on potential regional barriers to trade and investment and the ongoing need to integrate the region, especially along the lines of SouthSouth cooperation. The Committee also called for countries to build capacity so that policymakers could effectively navigate the new global economic landscape. “Strong, diversified and wellbalanced growth and trade, propelled by both external and domestic demand, will be critical to set on
course the SDG implementation,” said United Nations UnderSecretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP Dr Shamshad Akhtar in her opening remarks at the Committee. Dr. Akhtar said, “It is an opportune time for the region to take stock of its real trade potential and to take steps to enhance its competitive edge through implementation of enabling policies that fully exploit each country’s economic potential in an inclusive and sustainable manner.” Discussions at the Committee were informed by findings in the
ESCAP Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Report 2015 Supporting Participation in Value Chains. The report sent a strong message that the Asia-Pacific region needs to respond to slowing global trade growth with new policies that boost competitiveness and productivity to harness the potential for trade created by the spread of Global Value Chains. The Trade and Investment Committee session was one of the main events during the Fourth Trade and Investment Week held by ESCAP and partners from November 1 to 6.

Thanyapura Phuket has been named Asia's Leading Sports Resort at the 22nd annual World Travel Awards, renowned as the most prestigious and comprehensive of its kind in the travel and tourism industry – the 'ultimate hallmark of quality' and the 'benchmark to which all others aspire'. "This is a great honour and the ultimate validation of the industryleading health and fitness model we've established," said Philipp Graf von Hardenberg (second from right), Thanyapura president and chief executive officer. "We set very high standards every day and receiving a world travel award makes
us very proud. We truly appreciate that our commitment to our guests, athletes and patients is recognized." Hundreds of thousands of travel professionals and high-end tourism consumers vote in the World Travel Awards, with Thanyapura set to go head to head with the other regional winners from around the planet in a final round of voting to decide the Grand Final victors of the awards. Being named Asia's Leading Sports Resort is another highlight for a venue that attracts some of the world's best athletes to use its state-of-the-art facilities, while also catering to amateur enthusiasts looking to improve their
performance and people who want to feel and look better by tapping Thanyapura's patented body, mind and soul approach to health and fitness. It is an approach that resulted in swimming's governing body, FINA, choosing Thanyapura for its "Targeting Rio 2016" project – a partnership in which 26 Southeast Asian scholarship-holders are living and training at the facility ahead of competing at the 2016 Rio Olympics. It is also known for its triathlon training with programs led by four-time World Champion and Executive Chairman Chris Macca McCormack.

InterContinental Bangkok named Thailand’s leading business hotel for third year running
For the third year in a row, InterContinental Bangkok has been named Thailand’s Leading Business Hotel in the prestigious World Travel Awards annual survey. The downtown Bangkok hotel bested nine other nominees to take top prize in the category during the
22nd World Travel Awards, Asia and Australasia Ceremony, held in Hong Kong. The World Travel Awards are considered the Oscars of the industry, with nominations made and votes cast by travel and tourism professionals around the globe as well as by the general public.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) rolled out a number of strategic activities to promote the good image of the Kingdom as a top tourist destination at one of the most important travel trade events in Europe, the World Travel Market (WTM), from November 2-4, 2015. TAT first attended the WTM in 1980, making this the 35th year of participation. Traditionally, TAT uses the show as an important platform to launch the country’s tourism marketing campaign for the incoming year. This year TAT is launching the new Amazing Thailand logo, which incorporates the attraction and appeal of the most famous characteristic of Thailand – The Smile. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT
governor said, “One of Thailand’s most important events for this year, WTM will be the launch of the new ‘Amazing Thailand’ logo, which features the famous Thai Smile. Thailand is also known as the Land of Smiles, and the new logo builds on that in order to strengthen the bonds of friendship, fun and happiness.” Ornate details of the traditional Thai Kanok pattern have been adjusted to create the ‘Smile’ symbol. The letter ‘A’ in the word ‘Thailand’ has been redesigned to look like a pair of smiling eyes, which, when accompanied with the ‘Smile’ symbol, perfectly form a person’s smiling face. The colour schemes have also been specifically chosen to underpin the image of softness. One highlight in support of the
new logo is the “I-smile” activity to show the development of TAT’s world-class information technology management tools to promote tourism. Visitors were able to check out the entire website, mobile application, as well as events and online campaigns. Visitors who signed up for the campaigns and activities received exotic prizes of high-quality Thai fabric and a bag tag with their photos emblazoned by the new Amazing Thailand logo. TAT has also organised a prominent “London Bus Wrapping” with the new Amazing Thailand smile logo display that is being prominently positioned in front of the Excel Hall. The bus offers a chance for visitors to enjoy a free cup of Doi Chang coffee, and a free Thai massage.

Youth Focus The Use of Drama in the Classroom by Maureen Nelly The students at MIS Year 5 are all around 10 and 11 years old. While there are many students from around the world, what these children have in common is being immersed in the English language during instruction time at this Pattaya international school. Since literacy is comprised of the four elements of reading, writing, listening and speaking, I’ve found that the use of drama in the classroom helps children become successful in all four areas. In particular, in those whose second language is English, confidence, fluency and good times are the natural byproducts of drama and theatre in class. Although play script creation began in the earlier years, many of the students
in Year 5 are becoming more acquainted with acting, its strategies, and the use of emotion and humor, through acting this year. Just recently, the Afterschool Drama Club staged several performances of “Little Rabbit Foo Foo” for Year 5 and other classes. The children were very proud of their work and pulled together all the different stage aspects of memorization, use of voice,
Diwali Delights at GIS by Mark Beales
Garden International School (GIS) celebrated Diwali in spectacular fashion with dances, songs and traditional Indian snacks. The main hall was packed on November 5 to mark Diwali, the festival of light. Beforehand, parents had prepared tasty snacks to try
and scented candles lit the way into the hall. Primary and Secondary students took part in several performances, which told the story of Diwali and also featured traditional and modern Indian music and dance. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School.
stage directions, editing scripts, and costume and prop creation. We are now beginning work on our next production – a humorous adaptation of the story “Cinderella”. During first term, the construction of a classroom puppet theatre was begun and it is now nearing final completion. We decided as a class that making sock puppets would be a great way
to begin using our theatre. So after the winter break, one of the first new projects of term two will be the creation of our individual sock puppets. Initially, children will be placed in small groups to work with the script, define
their characters and to practice their performances both in small groups and before the whole class. And scripts will be simpler affairs with anywhere from two to five characters. Eventually, we will bring in more complex elements of staging, scripting and productions as well as the creation of our own puppet theatre play scripts. Maureen Nelly is a teacher certificated in both the states of New York and California in the USA. She has taught in various types of classroom settings including homeroom teacher, specialist in English instruction, long-distance learning and
more. In addition to teaching in America for 15 years, Ms Nelly has also traveled throughout the world working as a teacher of English and other subjects in English as both a volunteer and a paid professional. After teaching in international schools in Taiwan for five years, Ms Nelly realized her dream of teaching at an international school in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Now here at Mooltripakdee International School in Pattaya, she is convinced more than ever, that she will remain and teach in Thailand for the next many years. “It is my home now and I love the Thai people, the culture and the Kingdom of Thailand.”

This & That Sex and Religion in Ancient Thebes
20th Century Fox’s The Egyptian (1954) is wedged awkwardly in Cinemascope terms between The Robe (1953) and Elizabeth Taylor’s Cleopatra some nine years later. Only The Robe was a box office success as it was quick-moving and dealt with the sufferings of the early Christians at a time when cinema audiences were not totally turned off by orthodox religious subjects. Cleopatra was far too long and bored the pants off people who went to see it. Oddly, The Egyptian made its money not in the cinemas of the 1950s but in much later releases on cable TV and in disc versions. Today the movie, based on a novel by Mika Waltari about court intrigues in the 14th century BC, is something of a cult classic and has recently been re-released by Twilight Movies on DVD and Blueray with a full-length commentary by film historians.
The reason why cinema audiences of 60 years ago did not warm to the Egyptian is that there is no happy ending and thus ran contrary to the expectations of the time in epics. The main character is Sinuhe (Edmund Purdom), a physician who wastes his entire life chasing shadows and ends up being exiled for life in a remote desert. He gets mixed up with a Babylonian harlot, Nefer (Bella Darvi), who bankrupts him without ever showing him the “finer perfection of love” which he craves, or thinks he does. He recovers from this episode, making mega-cash from his medical skills, only to end up murdering the pharaoh Akhnaton (Michael Wilding), almost killing his successor, and ending up as a penniless exile writing his memoirs in total isolation. Sinuhe is not a likeable guy whereas cinema audiences of the time looked for heroes. He toys with the new religion
of the One God, allegedly anticipating Christianity, and even has an affair with one of its adherents, Merit (Jean Simmons). Yet he shows no real remorse when she is murdered in a massacre of worshippers by priests representing the Old Gods. He very nearly poisons his best friend, Horemheb (Victor Mature), but has a last minute change of heart and is exiled for life when Horemheb becomes the next pharaoh in a palace coup. As in the book, Sinuhe spends his life searching for answers to the meaning of life but fails to come up with any, except to remark that mankind is a crawling disease on the face of the Earth. His only ability seems to be to make a fortune from medicine and then lose it – twice as a matter of fact. He even betrays his own parents and sells their tomb in the Valley of the Kings to pay for his sex life during one of his pauper periods. It is a paradox of the movie that DVD watchers of today, who are much more broad-minded than the post-war cinema audiences, find the deviousness and sordidity implicit and explicit in the movie much more to their taste. The Egyptian was a hugely
expensive movie to make and many of the props were later sold off to re-appear in Cecil B deMille’s The Ten Commandments. In spite of the gloomy theme, the cast is mostly well chosen. Bella Darvi is convincing as the heartless gold digger who eventually gets her come-uppance by dying of a dread disease. Peter Ustinov is excellent as Kaptah, Sinuhe’s servant who sticks with him through thick and thin. On the other hand, Michael Wilding just can’t carry off the part of the pharaoh who believes in one god. He comes across simply as a prissy Englishman in funny clothes and a hat which reminds you of the sort that popes are buried in. Director Michael Curtiz organizes well the crowd scenes and gives a convincing interpretation of the massacre of the followers of Aton in their temple. The musical score is excellent, partly written by Bernard Herrman, and the Twilight Movies version allows you to listen to the musical score, if you want to, without any dialogue at all. The words of the hymn to Aton “How beautiful art thou” are said to be based on ancient papyri, although the connection is surely slight.
Not that it matters much, but the film is not based on real history. Although the pharaoh Ahknaton was real enough, he was succeeded by the boyking Tutenkhamen and not by Horemheb as depicted. Ahknaton built his own city Tel-el-Amarna in dedication of the sun god Aton and had no temple in Thebes as shown in the movie. The film tries to draw a strong parallel between the worship of Aton and early Christianity over a thousand years later, but is forced to give up on the attempt: there are no parallels in fact! Well, never mind. If you
like historical spectacles on the screen, then you are likely to put The Egyptian on your much-wanted list. The latest DVD and Blue-ray limited edition, available from Amazon, will set you back about US$40. However, it’s worth it for the extras. During the commentary by the film historians, we learn that Bella Darvi’s cat, which hisses at Sinuhe as he tries to strangle and drown its mistress, was chosen from a short-list of 50 Persianlooking moggies. You would surely not find that kind of attention to detail in the movies of today.

Are You Ready For A Relationship? 5 Questions To Ask Yourself Before “Plunging In”
Admitting to yourself that you’re not ready to enter a relationship can be very hard to do when single. Everyone should get the chance to be in a loving, healthy romantic relationship, but depending on your circumstances and emotional health, it may not be a good idea to jump right into one. It may be better for you and your eventual partner if you get your emotions and other parts of your life straightened out first. Before committing to a relationship, always stop and ask yourself these five questions: 1. Are You Really Over Your Ex? If not, getting involved with someone else is highly unwise. Using someone who may or may not really like you to help heal a broken heart is wrong, because your relationship with the new person will be permanently tainted by thoughts about your ex. You won’t really be able to start fresh – you’ll just try to work out whatever unresolved issues you and your ex may have had with your new partner. Or, even worse, you won’t be able to judge him for who he is, but only on the basis of what your ex was like.

Here’s Why You Should Not Throw Away Used Tea Bags
Prepackaged tea bags make it so easy to enjoy a cup of tasty tea. Whether it is green tea, black tea, chamomile tea, peppermint tea or any other herbal tea, drinking a few cups daily provides many health benefits. Herbal teas have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, astringent and antibiotic properties. But did you know you can get many additional benefits from those little tea bags after you’ve had your tea? Instead of just throwing them away, you can use the damp, small tea bags in your beauty regimen and even gardening. Here are the top 10 uses of used tea bags. 1. Treat Mild Acne Used green tea bags can help protect and beautify your skin in a number of ways. In fact, they are one of the best home remedies for mild acne. The catechins in green tea have antibacterial properties that help fight acne-causing bacteria. A 2009 study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology suggests that green tea lotion can be an effective and safe treatment for mild acne. Another study, published in the Journal of Investigative
4. Make Your Hair Shiny Used black or green tea bags can add shine to dry and dull hair. The antioxidants in the tea promote hair growth as well as prevent common problems like dry scalp and dandruff. 5. Soothe Puffy and Irritated Eyes Any kind of tea bags can help soothe puffy and irritated eyes. Tea has anti-irritant and antioxidant properties that help reduce swelling around your eyes and relieve tiredness and inflammation. Furthermore, it helps restore the natural glow and spark of your eyes. 6. Soothe Sunburns and Razor Burns Moist green teabags can soothe sunburns as well as razor burns. Green tea contains tannins with astringent and mild anesthetic properties that can help combat itching and pain. A 2001 study published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology notes that the polyphenolic extracts of green tea help reduce the number of sunburn cells and protect epidermal Langerhans cells from damage caused by ultraviolet sunrays. You can also try used chamomile tea bags for their antiinflammatory qualities. 7. Fight Toenail Fungus Instead of discarding used tea bags, you can use them to treat toenail fungus. The tannins in tea help kill the fungi responsible for fungal infections, while its antibiotic and astringent properties relieve symptoms like burning sensations, swelling and skin irritation. 8. Exfoliate Your Skin The slight rough texture of the contents of used tea bags is great for exfoliating your skin. This helps get rid of dead skin cells, dirt and other impurities.
2. What Do You Really Want From A Relationship? Maybe you really want a relationship, but before you start one, consider this: How deep and how exclusive do you want it to be? Do you just want to go on some casual dates? Do you want a “friends with benefits” relationship? Do you want to find the love of your life and settle down? Whatever you want, if you know what your ultimate goal is, you’ll enjoy the pursuit of dating more and feel much more confident abut it. 3. Are You An “Independent” Person? The main difference between being independent and being selfish is that independent people can work out effective compromises with others, and selfish people cannot. Do you have to have everything your way, all the time? Do you disappear for days at a time without informing anybody of where you’re going? When you’re at a social event, do you have to have the spotlight the whole time? If any of these sounds like you, you need to learn how to be considerate of others’ needs, compromise, and share the attention before getting into a relationship. 4. Are Your Finances In Order? That question may strike you as completely unrelated to the question of whether or not you’re ready for a relationship, but bear with us for a moment. Sticking to a budget and investing money wisely are skills that are essential to being an adult. If you’re having trouble meeting your own needs and financial responsibilities, how can you expect to be able to take care of someone else’s needs? 5. Is This Guy The Right Type For You? Maybe every guy you’ve ever had a relationship with has turned out to be a cheater or a slimeball, even though you’ve always insisted that you want a “real man.” If this is the case, it’s very likely that you’re actually afraid of having a lasting relationship, and in order to avoid getting into one, you’ve stuck exclusively to guys who don’t have the right stuff for a long-term relationship. Dermatology in 2012, concluded that epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) in green tea helps modulate intracellular molecular targets and inhibit p. acnes bacteria that causes acne. 2. Fight Aging Signs Green tea has anti-aging and antioxidant properties that help improve skin complexion and elasticity. It even delays signs of skin aging, such as sagging skin, sun damage, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles. A 2003 study by the Medical College of Georgia notes that green tea aids skin rejuvenation. It can be used to treat skin diseases and wounds. 3. Eliminate Bad Breath You can enjoy fresh, minty breath using a soothing and mild mouthwash made with peppermint and green tea bags. The
Plus, its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties help soothe your skin and give your skin an incredible glow. 9. Protect Plants from Pests and Infections Whether you grow plants in pots or lush green gardens, used tea bags can help keep pests and fungal infections at bay. 10. Add to Organic Compost As long as the bags are made of paper or muslin, rather than polypropylene, used tea bags can be composted to speed up the decomposition process in plant material. They also encourage friendly bacteria to grow, which helps prevent fungal and pest problems. Collect your used bags in a jar and add them to your compost at your convenience. Local Sports Alex streets the “Field” Seventeen eager players gathered at The Growling Swan anticipating the challenge set out for them in today’s event. We were heading up the highway to play Crystal Bay, one of our favorite courses. Weather wise it looked as though we were in for a good day; pleasant conditions greeted us and stayed with us all day. We welcomed Fred Cuypers returning from his adventure to the USSR, some great stories and great photos. Unfortunately I was advised sometime later that Niall Stuart played his last game of golf for this trip; travel safe, Niall, we hope to see you soon. The course was in good nick and from the white tees Alex Field showed a clean pair of heels to the rest of “The Field”. When I say it is worth it, it is not just for the value but the course was in great condition and as we all know, the layout is hard to beat. A good turnout for today’s event saw Captain Phil passing out Christmas cards to the top five blokes on the start sheet. And top blokes they were, turning in some great scores that were all at their handicap or better. Mogens back on top! It was a slow old trip to Greenwood what with the crawl along Sukhumvit and then the roadworks on 331 but we arrived after a 62-minute drive and found the course to be fairly busy as is to be expected with the current special prices. 1150 baht for green fee, caddy and cart and 950 baht for walkers is terrific value, especially on this golf course which is invariably well presented. With five groups on the start sheet we were allocated the A and B nines in that order and our first
Mogens Mellander
group got away just a little after our scheduled 10 am tee time. The weather was great with very little wind, although it did warm up somewhat towards the end of the round but the course was in good nick, although many of the greens were very hard, they were firm and true. The pace was fairly good and most of our groups got around in about four hours and 15 minutes. Our resident biker Mogens Mellander returned to his top form and won the day with 40 points, while 3-handicapper Mike Allidi shot an even par round to gain second spot with 39 points. There were three golfers with 38 points which required a countback that resulted in Svend Hommel Hansen (22-point back nine) finishing third from Steve Truelove (21-point back nine) in fourth place, and having no trouble playing from his new handicap of 11 came Christian Boysen (19-point back nine) in fifth spot. LFP A9 – Peter Blackburn B9 – Dick Braimbridge Wylie wins the low gross in a tight one! There was a fantastic response for the 6th Phantom Golf Cup as we had 65 players signed up and with the weather looking good we were looking forward to a great day with an earlier than usual first tee time of 9 am. With a low gross prize up for grabs this month there was keen interest shown by the low handicappers. The first group away just five minutes early consisted of Jeff (5), Bob (2), Jack (3) and Steve (6), and they produced some very fine golf on the day with just two strokes separating the four of them at the end. The rest of the groups followed and things went extremely smoothly with everyone showing up on time (well almost) and the last group teed off just two minutes later than scheduled – a great effort with 17 groups. The weather was fabulous, although it did get hot towards the end, and the golf course was in terrific shape with the greens better than most had seen them for a long time. Hats off to Mountain Shadow for producing a lovely course for us. All groups moved well and after the first group came in after four hours and 10 minutes the others followed in quick succession. In addition to the low gross prize we had A flight for handicaps 0 to 16 playing stroke off the blue tees and B flight for golfers with handicaps of 17 to 36 playing stableford off the white tees; there were four places in each flight. We also had a prize for the best ladies' score and there were technical prizes for both flights on all holes – nine for A flight and nine for B flight. Jeff Wylie took out the low gross award with a fine 73 off his 5-handicap, but there were a few others snapping at his heels, namely Steve (74), Bob (75) and Jack (75). The A flight was fairly easily won by big Steve Truelove with a net 68 and there were three golfers on net 71 involved in a countback for the next three places. Bill McGarvie (net 36 back nine) got the nod for second place with Mike Allidi (net 37 back nine) finishing third and Peter Hynard (net 40 back nine) came fourth. It was an outstanding effort by 79-year-old Svend Hommel who plays off an 18-handicap and won the B flight with a magnificent 45 points with Nick Shaw finishing second with a great 43 points. Ken Grimes was third with 39 points and with two players on 38 points the resultant countback determined that
Dick Braimbridge (24 points on the back nine) finished fourth with Dave Lehane (19 points on the back nine) just missing out. It had been one of the best monthly tournaments with an excellent field and some great golf played on a fine golf course. We had a great buffet meal back at the Phantom Bar and thanks to Alex from the Hotel Dania for that and also many thanks to Christian Boysen of the Phantom Bar for sponsoring the event. We would also wish to
Svend Hommel, Jeff Wylie, Nat Rukkid & Steve Truelove thank Alibaba Restaurant, Crown of India Restaurant, Colin’s Golf Bar and Hotel Dania for helping us with sponsorship. PSC Tropical Golf from BJ's by Derek Brook
Pleasant Valley (Stableford) I know some players dislike this course, but the scribe is not amongst them, and I can think of many courses with better reputations that would be lower in my list of courses to play. It did not start very auspiciously years ago, as the fairways seemed too close on a piece of land that was really too small for a golf course, however with the planting of trees and as it has matured I feel it has come on leaps and bounds. This was usually a course that suffered greatly when it rained, and one of our players used to call it Pleasant Swamp, however when we play these days it always seems to be in fine condition and so it was on this day. The fairways were fine although the ball did pick up mud in places, and the greens were a bit slow, but it is not exactly dry around the area these days. All in all a good course and well presented. The restaurant is not too bad either and the food is good and reasonably priced. A couple of our golfers sat outside for a while until they were forced in by the flies. Seems
it is that season. However it was fine indoors and helped us to relax after a hard day on the course. We were soon away and the good weather deteriorated as we got close to Pattaya. It was pouring down, and we waded through the water to BJ's. Here we were reminded that this was the first anniversary of our move from Tropical Bert's, and a nice little buffet had been laid on by the proprietors. I thank them for this nice gesture. So to the presentation. The scores were not too bad as the Flight winners with one of BJ's finest course was long on the day. In the A flight, no surprise, 0 to Wet streets and running water seem to 18, the winner was Mashi Kaneta with 38 produce two types, those who warm up on points ahead of Landis Brooks in second cold beer and those who dash home in case with 37 points and Bill McGarvie in third it pours down again. Guess which ones we with 36 points. In the B flight the winner are. TTFN. was Nigel Perry with 34 points on countback Near Pin: Don Carmody, Landis over Tom Cotton in second place. In third Brooks, Takeshi Hakozaki was Cave Cooper with 33 points. Long Put: John Hackett

You & Your Pets Dog People v/s Cat People A very casual sampling of Pattayans (Pattayanese?) reveals that most people here prefer dogs to cats. Unfortunately, pet lovers who live in condos or apartments don’t have a choice; if they want to keep a pet, they must choose the feline variety—unless they find a rabbit, bird, fish or snake more cuddly. So what does your pet preference say about you? According to one study, if you’re a dog person, it’s likely that you tend to seize the day. Dog people were 15 percent more extroverted than cat people in the survey. That means they are more outgoing, enthusiastic, positive and energetic. In contrast, cat people were found to be 11 percent more open to trying new things; they tend to be more curious, creative, artistic and nontraditional thinkers; but they might be less agreeable. The online survey, done by the University of Texas at Austin, asked people to rate themselves as "cat people" or "dog people," then asked questions designed to reveal their true personalities. Conclusions: *Dog people were 11 percent more conscientious than cat people. What does that mean? They are selfdisciplined, have a strong sense of duty, and tend to be "planners."
*Dog people were 13 percent more likely to be agreeable than a cat person. Agreeable people tend to be trusting, altruistic, kind, affectionate, and sociable. *Cat people tend to get stressed out more easily. *Cat people were 12 percent more neurotic than dog people. Neurotic people are easily stressed, anxious and worriers. The study noted that pet owners may be a lot more like their furry friend than they ever realized. If dogs tend to be energetic, faithful, and easy to get along with, for example, so do the people who love them. On the other hand, if you prefer to spend time on your own and are always game to try new things, then you could be a cat person, and you are more unconventional in your thinking and actions, and more prone to worry than dog people.
Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/

You’re probably aware of family health measures, but do you know what issues are important to provide for your pet’s well-being? This Pattaya Today feature may help answer some common questions.
De-fleaing the Scene
Fleas can be an annoyance to you and a threat to the health of your pets. They usually enter your home from outside, so leaving your pets in the yard is like putting out the welcome mat for pests that ride into your home on your pet’s fur. To cut down on fleas in your home, vacuum weekly, throw away trash in an outside garbage can ASAP, and wash areas where your pet spends time. Most kitties are sensitive to insecticides. Sadly, every year many of them die from flea control that's been used the wrong way. Don’t use any flea product on cats that isn’t labeled for them. If you bought it at the store, it can’t hurt to ask your vet first. Always check with a vet before you use any product on cats under 4 months old. Some foggers don't destroy eggs and must be used again two weeks later when eggs have hatched. If your pet is on flea control and you vacuum often, you might not need to use a fogger at all. For serious flea problems, consider calling a professional exterminator.

Here we have we have yet another cute kitten: this is one of three beautiful sisters. She is full of beans and just loves tearing about the place with her siblings and other friends whom she has here.
Oreo
This handsome, disabled fellow has to wear nappies which normally need changing four times a day. Other than that, he has no other special needs and is quite happy scooting around the place on his bottom!
Cat Corner Tip Flea control products with chemicals aren't recommended for young puppies. But regular flea combing can help get rid of these pests on both puppies and kittens. Dip the comb in soapy water between strokes to kill fleas. Outside your home, sunlight reaching the soil can keep the flea population down. Can worms called nematodes that eat fleas? Most nematodes are tiny. Some eat plants, while others eat animals, microbes, or insects, like fleas. You can sometimes find them for sale at stores that carry gardening supplies.
Going to the Dogs... Did you ever walk into a room and forget why you walked in? I think that is how dogs spend their lives. ~Sue Murphy
Cats are very social. They like it when you're around. When left alone, they might get noisy or spray your house. What to do? Try ignoring your cat for about 15 to 20 minutes before you leave and when you get back. Leave out some of his favorite toys and put them away when you come back. Play with him regularly to burn extra energy so he'll rest when he's alone. If you still need more help, talk to your vet about other tactics or medication.
