Online dating scam blitz T hai women, who comprise over 70 percent of the victims cheated by online scammers, are lobbying the Crime Suppression Division to initiate a proper crackdown on social media. One woman claimed she had been robbed of 23 million baht after falling prey to a trickster who said he was looking to marry an unhappy widow. Two women from Pattaya also claimed to have lost much smaller sums after thinking they were in touch with male lonely hearts on an online dating site. In fact, these victims had been scammed by Nigerians, based in Africa and often working in groups, who claimed to be bachelors from the UK or the USA and formed relationships with women through media channels such Facebook as well as specialist sites catering for those hunting a lifelong partner. The scammers conned the women out of money through various methods. If the victims were rich, they would be tricked into joining bogus investment schemes or paying huge hospital bills of their imaginary boyfriend. If they were poor, the scammers would ask their gullible contacts to pay the customs duty on a suitcase full of jewels which had been impounded at an airport. Another victim, who asked not to be identified as she felt very foolish, said she had been conned out of 100,000 baht by a scammer who said

Nigerians arrested in Pattaya in December 2014 for cash scam he was a British oil rig worker who had broken his leg whilst saving the life of a dolphin and had short-term cash-flow problems. She explained that she became suspicious only when her online romantic contact sent two photographs of himself, one revealing a black body and the other a pale white one. Why women in particular fall prey to online schemers is not totally clear. But it is probably related to the victim’s longing for a partner, perhaps after the breakup of a previous relationship or a divorce, and their reluctance to believe that their new boyfriend is a fraud. As regards Thailand, it is likely that some Thai women’s ambition to marry a rich European or American,

writing a book on online dating scams, said, “In the past, villains would post advertisements on the back pages of magazines and were lucky to get a victim once a year or so. But now technology has streamlined communications and given scammers new tools of deceit, thus opening up a vast pool of potential victims.” He added that the scammers knew very well that many women are searching for foreign husbands on the internet which has become a happy hunting ground for scammers. “My research suggests that over half of the scams originate in Africa although the practitioners disguise their true identities and often use a proxy server.”

and to go and live in style in a foreign land, also plays a part in the gullibility stakes. The administrator of the Thai Anti-Scam Facebook page, Pornnapas Chartphuek, said she received about 20 complaints a day from women who had fallen prey to fraudsters on dating sites. She explained that many Thais were still rather naïve about internet evils. Her advice was to try and verify the identities of online contacts who showed a romantic interest in them and to be suspicious when a new friend started talking about money, investments or medical emergencies. “If these subjects are raised, the likelihood is that you are being targeted,” she said. After-hours drinking targeted

The local authorities have stepped up patrols of popular tourist spots after-dark after the dreadful incidents in Paris recently. In particular, Walking Street was thoroughly investigated because of reports that some bars and clubs

were serving alcoholic drinks after 2 o’clock in the morning. Police gently reminded the visiting public that the licensing laws had to be fully enforced as a security measure for their safety.

Cash haul hidden in sand Two women who were allegedly stealing from foreign tourists in the Beach Road area have been arrested whilst they were sitting together near a sand dune. Boonkue and Wannipa, 53 and 22 respectively, were arrested after police found 5,540 baht hidden nearby in the sand. A British tourist had complained to the police that the two women had approached him allegedly for a friendly chat but in reality picked his pockets. The women initially denied everything before the awesome discovery in the sand.

Jumper falls through roof Mike Shopping Mall staff found the body of a man aged about 25 who had jumped from on high and crashed through the roof of the coffee shop area. Luckily nobody was in the storage room at the time of the incident. Security staff told investigators they had noticed a man removing his glasses in the swimming pool area but had no reason to believe he was about to jump into oblivion.

Fake gun not responsible Police have confirmed that a gun found in the belongings of a dead man was fake and could not have delivered the fatal shot. Santi Losoongnern, 30, was hit twice in the back and was found by villagers near his overturned bike in the Nongprue district. Locals said that the dead man was formerly a janitor for a public swimming pool. It was reported that a man on a bike was chasing Santi and the presumption is that the stranger was responsible. Identifying the killer won’t be easy as the only description is that he was chubby.

News Naklua culture promoted

Deputy Mayor Wattana Jantanawaranon announced a new campaign to make Naklua a sustainable tourist district. The centre of attention was the Lan Pho Naklua Park which

is popular amongst weekend vacationers. There are popular folk singers to be found there on a regular basis as well as stalls selling local seafood and OTOP products.

SOS Rice Appeal 2015 This year’s SOS Rice Appeal will take place from December 4-7 at locations throughout Pattaya. This annual campaign is organised by the Father Ray Foundation to raise food to feed the 850 underprivileged children and students with disabilities currently in its care. From December 4-7 the children and students from the Foundation will be at supermarkets throughout the city and you can also donate at most 7-Eleven stores in Pattaya, and all they ask is that you add an extra bag of rice to your shopping basket and donate it to the children. All cash collected in donation boxes will be used to purchase food for the children. Your donation will ensure the blind students, the children with special needs, and the vocational students with disabilities will have enough food so they can concentrate on their studies. It will also help feed the toddlers who attend the Father Ray Day Care Center and who receive a nutritious breakfast on arrival. Your donation will also mean the residents of the Father Ray Children’s Home, Children’s Village and the Drop-In Center never go to bed feeling hungry. Each year the Father Ray Foundation uses 75,000 kg of rice, but this year they also need cooking oil, salt, sugar, fish sauce, canned fish and dried noodles.

Motorbike thefts a worry

Banglamung police superintendent Colonel Thanapat Chawalak summoned his deputies to a crisis meeting after reports that many motorbikes had been stolen, especially in Naklua, but without the necessary number of arrests. It was

stated that the police did not have enough manpower to create checkpoints at night. However, renewed efforts will be put into warning the general public to have good security for their valued commodities.

Trouble brewing for mahouts

Banglamung authorities presided over a meeting with eight elephant-camp operators after hearing worrying reports that unhealthy competition for custom had broken out. Apparently, there is a growing demand from tourists for nature tourism which usually includes riding atop an elephant in a forest area. But some unregistered elephants have been noticed carrying

tourists and several of the human owners seem to be Korean or Chinese which is contrary to law. There have also been reports that some tour operators have been trying to bribe the mahouts into working only for them. It was stated that if the problems could not be ironed out harmoniously then another meeting would be held.

Indian businessman Mahendra Singh, 42, was attacked when he sat on a stranger’s parked motorbike on Walking Street while waiting for a friend. When a man told Singh to get off the bike, an argument ensued and soon turned to fisticuffs. Singh’s Thai girlfriend took him to the police station to report the assault and confirm the man’s bruising and bleeding. Singh later realized that he lost 3,000 baht at the scene of the assault. A meeting at Pattaya Police Station ended with concerned parties agreeing to drop all charges.

Murdered man found in car

A South Korean businessman, Im Dongjun, aged 24, was found in the back seat of a car in Tambon Huai Yai. His blanket-covered corpse had been beaten and there was evidence his head had been struck by a hard object. There was no evidence of identification on the body but the police discovered who he was after two Koreans reported that he was missing. Police are working on the theory the dead man had business enemies who by now might have fled to another country, thus making the case very difficult to solve.

China still number one Retirement address When applying for or renewing a one-year retirement visa, the authorities are now insisting you show a house book or Chanoot with your name on it or, if relevant, a long rental contract. If the latter, the owner of the property may sometimes be summoned to attest you really live at the address. At a meeting of the Thai Hotels Association Eastern Chapter, it was announced that about six million Chinese nationals have visited Pattaya this year compared with about 2.5 million Malaysians and one million Japanese.

Other nationalities, including Russia and India, were below the one million mark. Marketing for 2016 will include road shows in Indonesia, Singapore and Berlin with the support of several local government organizations.

Anti-drowning lessons

New tourist visa Most Thai embassies abroad are now issuing six months, multiple-entry tourist visas. But we hear that they are available only in first country of residence (i.e. the one of your passport). So this visa is not meant for expats or long-term vacationers looking for a long visa whilst abroad. Also, there’s a staggering amount of paperwork needed, both financial and personal. Log book query A reader asks whether you can obtain a new log book at Chonburi Land Transportation if the vehicle was originally registered in Bangkok and still is. Afraid not. If you lose the log book, the replacement is given at the office or city where the registration took place. Remember to take your passport, driving licence, a letter from the local police (notifying the loss) and, if you have one, a photocopy of the lost document. Costs a mere 55 baht. Ongoing road checks Police are continuing in the Pattaya area, including the Dark Side, with their campaign to check drivers for drugs and booze as well as smaller infractions such as not wearing a seat belt, not wearing a helmet on a motorbike, having out-of-date documents and so on. The consequences of being over the alcohol limit can be truly awesome. Just don’t drink and drive.

The Bangkok Hospital Pattaya conducted a seminar and training session to teach 30 young people the best ways of saving people from drowning during an emergency. Marine and medical experts were on hand with practical advice.

School holds sports day

Arrest warrants Arrest warrants have been issued at Pattaya court for Drew Noyes and Wanrapa Boonsu. The couple had already been sentenced to two years imprisonment for extortion but had been allowed bail pending an appeal. Wanna break There’s a great little English-style cafe in Soi Yamato (next to Soi Post Office Pattaya) called Wanna Break, which serves up some great English grub. The breakfasts are hearty and reasonable in price, whilst the mince and mash is surely one of the tastiest examples of its kind in Pattaya. They serve some Thai food too and have rooms for rent.

Banglamung School hosted a sports day with an emphasis on Fuengfah Games to give students a chance to demonstrate their health and strength whilst promising to stay away from harmful drugs and nefarious activities.

TripAdvisor acknowledged Amari Pattaya for having received a Hospitality Excellence Award for five consecutive years from 2010 to 2015. This year, Amari Pattaya was included in TripAdvisor’s Hall of Fame. Latest vegetarian A new South Indian-style restaurant has opened on Second Road (diagonally opposite the Royal Garden), called The Dosa Hut, and it’s exclusively vegetarian. Try the hot and sour vegetable soup and the thali (selection of dishes in small pots) if you are not sure what to order. Recommended. Tourist numbers up According to government sources, tourist arrivals have been 25 percent greater than in 2014. With a month yet to go in the calendar year, the number of foreigners is said to total just a shade under 30 million with the biggest contributor being China (of course). Meanwhile hoteliers in Pattaya, from two stars to five, report that their guest rooms are filling up nicely. Tops in Tukcom Although Tops supermarket has not reopened on Central Pattaya Road – although mercifully the car park is still operational – it’s worth visiting the newly expanded Tops in the basement of Tukcom on South Pattaya Road. Good selection of food and one of the best salad bars in town. Opinions expressed in this column are the author’s alone and do not necessarily represent those of Pattaya Today’s management.

Education Days cited for January

Pattaya City Hall has designated January 9 as National Children’s Day. A sum of 1.7 million baht has been set aside for the celebrations but with a new set of rules. These are needed because, last year, it was discovered that necessary purchases, such as food and

musical bands, had been mysteriously blocked at bank level. This year persons with the authority to make purchases will have to show approved documentation. Teachers’ Day is set for January 16 when festivities will be held at Pattaya’s indoor stadium.

According to a panel of economic experts, Thailand’s history of military coups since 1932 has made the country’s politicians too absorbed by the issues associated with political stability rather than the equally important areas of foreign investment. At the CNBC Exchange 14th Asia Business Leaders Awards meeting last month, the subjects of transparency and accountability were the main reasons why research gurus maintained their reservations about Thailand which is Southeast Asia’s second biggest economy. Foreign direct investment in the country’s economy remains weak owing to structural weaknesses such as high labour costs, labour shortages in hi-tech and skill industries and a lax regulatory environment in which both civil and criminal laws are not always strictly enforced. Curtis Chin, former US ambassador to the Asian Development Bank, drew attention in particular to pervasive corruption and stressed that the country as a whole was investing too much time in the political situation and not addressing the underlying problems which were mammoth. In May 2014, there was a military putsch after seven months of political protest against the democratically elected government. Thailand’s army chief, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, declared the military had seized the supreme power and later installed himself as prime minister, marking the 19th coup since 1932. Initially, the military authorities declared that a general election would be held within a year, but the date has been progressively pushed back and is now scheduled to take place in May 2017. Because of the special powers granted to the prime minister under section 44 of the interim constitution, opposition has been largely muted. Supporters of the coup always claim that the putsch has achieved political stability, at any rate for now, whereas critics refer to the loss of civil liberties and the selective use of military courts from whose decisions there is no appeal. In particular there has been a renewed crackdown on “lèse majesté” offences, namely criticism or abuse of the royal institution. The World Bank’s latest survey on the ease of doing business ranked Thailand 49th out of 189 countries, down three places from last year, with frontier markets like Macedonia and the Slovak Republic outpacing the Land of Smiles. Although the local and international media made much of this decline, it is also true that the ordinary citizen’s perception of the military has remained remarkably high. For instance, public opinion polls show that General Prayut’s personal popularity remains high. Trust in him has barely deteriorated, if at all, since he assumed office. This positive attitude probably reflects the coup leaders’ efforts to arrest and jail some corrupt policemen and to increase accountability amongst civil servants. The establishment of the Centre for National AntiCorruption is seen by some as evidence of the government’s good intentions. Privy Council President General Prem Tinsulanonda has also been actively campaigning in his speeches for a renewed crackdown on corruption. It is also true that although General Prayut has made a few gaffes in his public utterances – even once suggesting he would never relinquish power if the country remained without harmony – his no-nonsense approach and openness with the general public has won him a lot of support within the country. Even outside the country, there has been a softening of international hostility to the coup makers. The American ambassador recently commented that relations between the two countries were now 95 percent normal. In other words, the coup and its consequences amounted to only five percent of the balance sheet. General Prayut has also won wide support within the ASEAN 10-member block and has good relations with both China and Japan. The real challenge for Thailand now is to understand that the country doesn’t need to fix its political system to tackle pervasive corruption. Thailand’s outlook is more geared towards externallysourced capital as opposed to domestic, due to a shrinking pool of investment savings as the Thai population rapidly ages, and the country’s leaders (whoever they are) have to focus on creating an environment welcoming to foreign direct investment. Investors want stability, visibility and transparency. If the latter can be achieved, whether or not the government is democratically elected, that will be a sound beginning for the future. It would be quite wrong to await the results of the next general election before preparing Thailand for its economic future. The time for action is now. The ASEAN Economic Community, basically a regional free trade zone, formally begins in one month’s time and Thailand must play a major role in the group’s dynamic unfolding.

Nothing to worry about by Derek Franklin

Many of the students at the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities, especially those who were born with a disability, have never experienced the feeling of being immersed in a bath full of water, or floating in a swimming pool, a lake or a river. Most Thai houses do not have baths; a shower is taken by scooping water from a large container and pouring it over yourself, so for many with a physical deformity or a mental disability, the chance of ever

going for a swim is very small and it would be too dangerous for the person with a disability to go down to the nearest river and jump in. So imagine how it feels for the new students at the school to be invited to the pool, given an inflatable swimming ring to wear, and with the aid of a friendly volunteer be lowered into the water. For the first few seconds there are a lot of worried looking students, but then that worry is replaced with smiles that never leave their faces.

They are not going to sink, the pressure on their joints and muscles is relieved and they flap their arms and legs and somehow make it through the water, still smiling. Several receive therapy while in the water and they are soon able to move their limbs like never before. Those students who have lost limbs in accidents are also encouraged to get into the water. There are many who, before losing a limb, were competent swimmers, but they have doubts that without both arms and both legs they will never be able to swim again. But they can, they just

move through the water in a different way. Swimming is just one of the sports the school offers its students. If learning to swim does not take their fancy, there is also basketball, tennis, archery and fencing, all for wheelchair users. There is also volleyball, takraw, badminton and athletics, and many former students have represented Thailand at international sporting competitions. Getting into the water for the first time was an ordeal for many, but who knows where it will lead. More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email info@fr-ray.org.

Japanese Fine Wine Dinner at Benihana The recent wine dinner at Benihana Pattaya featured wines from Grace Winery in Katsunuma, the birthplace of Japan’s wine industry and now the country's wine hub. Guests not only enjoyed the Japanese fine wines but also the special menu prepared by the executive chef using premium key ingredients ranging from hibachi shrimp and butterfish to Australian marbled rib eye. The event would not be complete without the Benihana chefs showing their trademark culinary and “eatertainment” skills dancing and juggling as they cook up the dish. Grace Koshu 2014, the winery’s signature white wine, was paired with a delectable plate of sushi and sashimi. The fine and delicate characteristics of the wine make it the perfect match with any kind of Japanese cuisine. For the mains, the balanced acidity of Grace Chardonnay 2013 went well with grilled butterfish finished with lemon and butter, while Grace Kayagatake Rouge 2013 with its abundant acidity matched the high-grade rib eye steak grilled to perfection. Mata Hari

A Much-loved Restaurant As soon as Mick and I walked through the doors of Mata Hari we knew why it ticks all the boxes and has done so since 1996. The atmosphere in the bar was palpable. Happy imbibers clinked their glasses in delicious expectation, waiters darted to and fro and the loquacious patron was on hand to oil the wheels and meet and greet his guests. This bastion of good eating is under the baton of Louis Noll: Pattaya’s own gustatory guru who has pioneered his food philosophy of good quality produce and affordable prices served in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere for over a decade. After relaxing in the bar and enjoying a reviving glass of the house Sauvignon Blanc, we were shown to our table. The decor is charming, elegant and relaxed, reminiscent of ’30s art deco with classical colonial overtones. A spectacular Stephen Gormley glass sculpture dominates the dining room providing an exotic, artistic centrepiece and the overall impression is comfortable and pleasing. The menu dazzles with surprises; new creations juxtapose with much-loved favourites providing mouth-watering reading and difficult decisions! After much deliberation we chose the beef carpaccio and their celebrated Kilpatrick oysters (grilled and prepared with bacon and Worcester sauce). There’s a bit of resurgence in the popularity of oysters and whether you choose to slurp them raw or enjoy cooked, as in the Kilpatrick recipe, their distinctive flavour shines through. Mine were fat and fleshy, perfectly grilled, Beef Carpaccio

Turkish Lamb Kofte

topped with shredded bacon and served on a puddle of light Worcestershire sauce. For the first time oyster novice this would be a good introduction into the joys of these delicious bivalves. Across the table all was well as Mick finished the last of his gossamer thin beef scattered with Parmesan. Other starters include the famous Dutch smoked eel (B.390), whitebait fritters, calamari, snow crab salad and also the famed Jamón Ibérico (Spanish ham from contented acorn-fed pigs). For our main courses we chose the Turkish lamb kofte (B.420) accompanied by parsley, tomato, mint salad and yoghurt sauce and pan-fried crab crusted red snapper. Both were fantastic and big on flavour. Mick gave 10 out of 10 to his aromatic minced lamb kebabs while my snapper enclosed in its flavour-packed crusty overcoat was crunch-tastic. A nice touch (and much appreciated) was that our affable waiter asked if we were ready before serving the main course. With this stunning meal we were drinking a French Pinot Noir. The extensive wine list is far-reaching offering excellent vintages from around the world to suit all tastes and pockets and the temperature controlled cabinets ensure the wine arrives at table in perfect order. Meat lovers can order their signature dish of fillet steak ‘Mata Hari’ (with chicken liver pate, mushrooms and green asparagus) or Australian T-bone, rib eye (B.790) or fillets are available from the grill menu. Another house speciality, the slow-cooked lamb shank, has been a perennial Oysters Kilpatrick

favourite and it still reigns supreme as do the lamb cutlets grilled with fresh herbs, garlic and olive oil. So many wonderful dishes to describe it’s not possible in one article. However, check out the website it will give you a good overview of this most impressive menu. To leave without tasting the house lemon cheesecake or warm sticky date pudding with homemade ice cream and caramel sauce is a capital offence punishable with death by chocolate. We must make mention now of the staff. They are the happiest group of servers we have met on our food forays. The service is sociable and friendly but also impeccably polite without being obsequious and their joie de vivre in their work very engaging. Mick and I enjoyed a wonderful evening at Mata Hari. So many things make it special: its cosmopolitan gastronomy, the ambiance which is friendly and relaxed and the prices realistic reflecting the quality and overheads experienced by restaurateurs in our times. The unwavering popularity of Mata Hari also speaks volumes for the esteem in which it is held and the culinary reputation that it has achieved, and deserves, here in Pattaya.

Mick & Di The Food Lovers

Casa Pascal

thefoodloverspattayatoday@msn.com Gambas al ajillo

Turbot a la Nage

Affordable Luxury For over a decade and a half Casa Pascal has been setting the benchmark for culinary art in Pattaya. Since those early days, when very few stand-alone fine dining restaurants even existed, it has consistently served exquisite, picture-perfect food in a sleek and sophisticated ambiance. At the helm of this contemporary but classically driven restaurant are Pascal and his lovely wife Kim who have created a temple to polished service and gourmet dining. Since our last visit the menu has been enhanced with many new dishes but all the old favourites are still there to please the regular fan base. Cold appetisers feature classic beef steak tartar prepared at your table, pan-seared sea scallops zinging with garlic, lime and garlic sauce (B250 and Casa Pascal’s signature home-smoked (yes, actually in his garden) Norwegian salmon (B.270) plus beef carpaccio prepared “Calabrese” style with olive oil and Parmesan cheese. Amongst the warm appetisers, featured items are the 5-spice roasted duck breast with hoisin sauce, cucumber and Asian coleslaw salad, and the top seller, gambas al ajillo. Mouthwatering choices all but Mick and I plumped for the garlic prawns

and Pascal’s celebrated overbaked French onion soup flavoured with red wine and thyme (B.170). As a culinary curtain raiser we were served an amuse-bouche of chilled cucumber soup with a mule's kick of garlic followed by a deluxe selection of perfected prepared seafood. A soft tender scallop came ringed with the tenderest squid, a sweet prawn had been wrapped in pancetta, and a gyoza dumpling, pan-fried to perfection Japanese style plus a slow-cooked egg oozing with creamy yolk. Delicious in the extreme, we could have eaten many more of them! However, with our palates titillated and our appetites on full throttle, we sat in anticipation for the dishes to come. While waiting, we enjoyed a glass of Prosecco which more than pleased. We followed this later with a bottle of an outstanding rosé, Cep d’Or Rosé from Provence lively and fruity but with a pleasant steely dry style it paired well with our choices. The classic bistro fare, onion soup, does not get any better than Pascal’s. Very umami; deeply beefy, boozy and pungent with those sweet baked onions and its hat of toasted bread smothered in Gruyere, I enjoyed every last slurp. Mick’s choice of gambas al ajillo was another spot

on dish with its big blowsy prawns saturated in virgin olive oil and garlic and interestingly served in a candle charged cast iron pot. Casa Pascal is the place for lobster fans. They are flown in weekly and served either just simply grilled or extravagantly flambéed in Scottish whisky. We eschewed this fine example of those lush crustaceans this time and chose instead to sample the fresh turbot a la Nage and Australian Yellowtail from the “Specials” list. Nage means “swimming” in French and here the turbot had been bathed in a lovely poaching broth with white wine and flavoured with a host of vegetables and herbs. With its wonderful flavour and firm texture it made very good friends indeed with the fragrant stock. The Yellow fish benefited from its pansearing leaving a crisp crust and a soft interior of sweet flesh topped with diced tomatoes, peppers and onions for added textural play. Both dishes were very, very good with a luxury overload of taste and care

Yellowtail Fillet

preparation. Other main courses include pork Wiener schnitzel (plate sized), the famous crispy, succulent Pork Knuckle (B.520) served with sauerkraut, ovenroasted rack of lamb with the house 7-herb crust and the celebrated steaks from Australian Angus rib eye through tenderloin, medallions to lamb chops. All served with your choice of vegetables, salad, sauces and seven options for potato preparation. After all this eating we passed on dessert but the list is very tempting and fancy; Chocolate mousse with Grand Marnier marinated oranges and vanilla sauce (B.240) or for cheese lovers their European

assorted platter served with walnuts and dried fruits. In these belt-tightening days Casa Pascal’s menu reflects the times in which we live. The prices are astonishingly reasonable and the quality extreme. The a la carte menu manifests the culinary imagination and enthusiasm of its patron/chef and is wedded in professionalism and proficiency. Liver spots, excessive pigmentation and other skin blemishes! by Thonglor Clinic

With age, our skin accumulates dark pigments, and these show as brownish patches on the hands and the face--not to forget the cranium of bald men. Lentigines, also known as sun spots, age spots or liver spots, are harmless, flat, brown discolorations of the skin which usually occur on the back of the hands, neck and face of people older than 40. These spots, more than anything else, give away a person’s age. We frequently call these ‘liver spots’ (nothing really to do with your liver function!) These unsightly patches can be removed with the help of the Perfect Laser Dual Yellow. Other conditions that appear with age are those small blood vessels that creep up on the side of the nose or on the cheeks. This condition is called telangiectasia. These small capillaries can also be eliminated with the use of Perfect Laser Dual Yellow. Very small spidery varicose veins are treated the same way. A careful examination is needed for these as larger varicose veins require a different treatment and will not respond to Perfect Laser treatment. In people with dark-pigmented skin there also is the insidious appearance of melasma, usually on the cheeks of those who suffered severe acne when young. Long-term sun exposure also leads to these melanin deposits. Melasma is a difficult condition to completely eliminate. Repeated treatments, usually five, are required.

Results will vary with each patient depending on the amount of pigmentation present. Using the laser without the need for surgical excision can also eliminate small skin tags. Other forms of skin growth--like freckles, moles and nevus--may require two or three treatments due to the depth where the pigments are located in the skin. Safe and showing results immediately, this procedure does not have any downtime. You can resume your normal activities immediately after the treatment. A local anesthetic cream is applied to minimize discomfort during the treatment. Some very dark lesions may require a second treatment two to three weeks after the initial one. Perfect Laser is specially calibrated to attack red or brown pigments with bursts of light. The normal skin is not damaged during the process. The laser scans the surface of the skin and the wavelength touches only these dark pigments. For skin rejuvenation, treatments can be repeated monthly, but for dark pigmentation a two to threeweek interval is all that is needed. The dermatologist will consult with you to establish a program tailored to your skin problems. Each individual has different needs and careful attention is assured. Why look in the mirror and see the same blemish day after day when all it needs is a short treatment? Then you can be more pleased with your reflection in the mirror.

Think Thin

Do you scold yourself for not losing weight? How critical are you of the size of your thighs, hips, stomach? How often do you complain to family and friends about how fat you are? Stop it. Stop such thoughts and stop such talk. People who believe themselves to be overweight are more likely to gain weight, according to a 2015 study published in the International Journal of Obesity. The

at Spa Cenvaree, Centara Grand Modus Resort Pattaya Coffee has been used for centuries as a natural fighting and skin firming ingredient. Coconut oil is a fantastic natural moisturizing lotion. It is anti-aging and an acne fighter. Together, coconut oil and coffee are an amazing all-natural firming and softening therapy. Package includes - Foot Ritual - Coffee-Coco Body Scrub or/and Galangal Firming Wrap - Swedish Massage Price is 1,500 baht ++ for 90 minutes or 1,900 baht ++ for 120 minutes. Available throughout December 2015. For more information or reservations, contact 033 007 888 ext 21.

British researchers analyzed three datasets, two from the US and one from the UK, comprising about 14,000 people in all. All three datasets followed people for at least seven years. In two of the three datasets, about 40 percent of people believed they were overweight; they gained nearly one point more of body mass index (BMI) than those who didn’t see themselves as overweight. In the third study, about two-thirds considered themselves overweight and gained 0.3 BMI points more than those who didn’t. The results were consistent regardless of whether participants were actually overweight. Have you often tried to lose weight and failed? Such experiences can instill a sense of hopelessness. You might feel you have no control over your weight. So stop repeating the same thoughts and failed attempts of the past. Forget about your weight. Instead, focus on what you do have control over: what you eat and how active you are. Take charge of what goes into your mouth—avoiding unhealthy foods and drinks. And take charge of your activities. Make a promise to yourself that you will walk 10 minutes a day. Yes, even that little helps to improve your life and provides a sense of doing something. You no doubt will double or treble your walking routine in a matter of weeks. The British study also determined that people who think of themselves as overweight are more inclined to binge eat or stress eat. Do not permit negative thoughts to control your eating habits. Think thin and healthy. Simply put, to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you take in. There are only two ways to do this: reduce the number of calories you take in each day, or increase the number of calories you burn each day. automotive by John K. Lindgren Editor-in-chief: carsanook.com

I started out on the entry-level Vespa Primavera 125 scooter and soon I hit the Vespa Sprint 150. What a ride! Case in point, the millions of motorbikes on the Thai roads are mostly 120cc- and 125cc-powered one-cylinder Japanese-built Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha brands. However, in the high-end 650 cc and bigger engine segment there's competition from the Italian superbike Ducati, the American iconic HarleyDavidson, and the UK “Brit-Bike” Triumph. These are heavy, powerful and expensive motorcycles and definitely NOT for beginners. Just think straddling a big-bike in Bangkok or Pattaya chock-a-block traffic jams. Now. What about a scooter or motor scooter. A cool Italian Vespa Sprint? That's a two-wheeler vehicle built on a pressed steel unibody design for a step-through mode that allows riders to plant their feet on a floorboard. Plus a prominent front fairing providing wind protection. Also a complete cowling for the engine to conceal dirt and grease. This design not only makes

it easy to get on and off. Women can ride a Vespa while wearing a dress. Like Audrey Hepburn in the iconic ’50s Hollywood movie “Roman Holiday”. Design/Practicality: In styling the new Sprint pays homage to the legendary ’60s Vespa Sprint. Fluid lines and compact dimensions, together with attention to detail like the rectangular LED headlight and the chrome lined side indicators. The new oyster shaped instrumentation with analogue speedometers, clock, tripmeter and fuel gauge. LED sidelights and a big fat LED brake light cluster. The handlebar grips are comfortable to hold. The switches are top-quality and the important sturdy side mirrors are easily adjusted and offering good rear vision. Last but not least the horn. Not wimpy. More of a piercing sound. Accident prevention. Use it accordingly. Vespa Sprint has a top-quality feel with excellent paint and an impressive level of fit-and-finish. Hidden beneath the elongated red seat is a convenient 15-liter lockable storage with enough space for two open face helmets

A young FBI agent infiltrates an extraordinary team of extreme sports athletes he suspects of masterminding a string of unprecedented, sophisticated corporate heists. "Point Break" is inspired by the classic 1991 hit.

Vespa Sprint 150 – Piaggio's Sporty Scooter Agile, Powerful with Loads of Street Credibility

“The Mercedes-Benz of Scooters” and extra stuff plus a useful glove compartment under the ignition. Twelve-inch front wheels and 12-inch in the back. Front disc brake and rear drum brake. These wide smaller wheels make the Vespas more nimble at low speeds for example on a Friday night traffic congestion. This test ride was conducted by yours truly Pattaya Today Automotive Editor. I am what they call “young at heart” or 60 plus. (“In USA about half our buyers are between 40 and 65 years old,” says Andy Zolman, general manager of Vespa Cincinnati) I done 15 years of car tests in the Kingdom from luxury convertibles to flatbed pick-ups. I consider myself a driver not a rider. That was before my Vespa scooter test rides. First my short 125 cc Primavera spin was around Rama IV neighborhood. I was impressed. A week ago the more powerful 150 cc Sprint demo scooter was provided by Vespiario Thailand (sole authorized distributor of Italian Piaggio scooters.) I was more than impressed. I was blown away! Ride, Handling and Braking: On my head a gray, vintage Vespa Scoot open face helmet (1,290 baht) and I am wearing an armored Gore-Tex Alpinestars red, white and black Bonneville Air Jacket (4,490 baht). As I thumb-press the starter, the engine comes to life with a throaty rasp. I roll out on the busy Rama IV. Friday traffic. No FEAR! Just twist the throttle. My black Vespa Sprint lunges forward without much effort. It feels vibe-free and so agile. Zipping along Sukhumvit Road direction Soi Thonglor with trucks, buses, and zig-zagging Japanese fast motorbikes all over.

But I am easy and relaxed. Riding a Vespa which is piece-of-cake. It's so maneuverable, with a tight turning circle, and the step-through design means that even if your legs can’t touch the ground, you can still pop forward and paddle the bike in and out tight spaces. The torque response is immediate. The 150 cc engine puts out a peak power of 12 horsepower and the CVT automatic transmission systems allow seamless, linear acceleration. However, the engine gets a bit loud as I rev up. This is the emblematic Vespa “put-put” sound but it's a sweet noise which increases as you gain speed. Later outside Bangkok on a long fine stretch suddenly I am cruising 85 km/ hour. Wow! The fuel consumption? Around 47 kpl combined. Compare that out my wife's commuter eco-car Nissan March 23 kpl. Verdict: This Vespa must be the easiest and coolest way to “scoot' around town be it in Pattaya or Bangkok. Also the most economical. A test ride is recommended.

Vespa Flagship showroom and next door Alpinestars (high-performance protective gear for motorcycles and mountain biking) store is located at A-Square on Rama IV Road opposite K Village. My advice. Start with the ridiculously easy to ride 125 cc Primavera. In front of the showroom there is plenty of space. No traffic. Vespa scooters with their lighter weight, automatic transmissions and feet-in-front design, they're easier to handle than more powerful motorcycles and can be less intimidating to new users. Vespa US tagline: “Turns on a Dime, Runs on a Nickel”. That's a Vespa! Vespa Sprint 150 Price: 121,900 baht Engine: 1-cylinder, 150 cc Power: 12.8 horsepower Torque: 12 Nm Top speed: 110 kph Fuel tank: 8-liter Fuel consumption: 47 kpl (95 or Gasohol) www.vespa.co.th

NAR Conference & Expo 2015! I just returned from San Diego in the United States after attending the National Association of REALTORS® Conference & Expo. I accompanied our Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association (Thailand) President Somsak Chutisilp and once again it was a real eye-opener to say the least. Many people are not aware of what a huge and influential organization the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR) really is and that it is the world’s largest trade organization having over 1.1 million members worldwide, 20,000 of whom attended last month’s confab. As the National Association of REALTORS® holds the official trade mark for the word “REALTOR®;” no one may use the word unless he or she is a cardcarrying member of the NAR. The NAR in conjunction with Thailand’s Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association (RESAM) have held two NAR Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS) training courses in Thailand in the last couple of years (2013 and 2015) in which nearly 100 participants were named REALTORS® and Certified International Property Specialists. Both of these great educational opportunities were the result of the collaboration between Dr.

Pairote (RESAM president 201314), Somsak Chutisilp (RESAM president 2015-16) and Nancy Suvarnamani, NAR liaison to Thailand and former chair of the NAR Global Business and Alliances Committee. These last two CIPS training courses are just the beginning as Nancy Suvarnamani has huge plans for even larger real estate activities for her native Thailand. She will soon host another CIPS training course and in 2017 will organize an NAR International Conference of REALTORS® in Thailand. The conference will be open to all members of NAR from around the world, and will be attended by the NAR president and other top officials. All of which attests to Thailand’s becoming the hub for real estate development in Asia. I say this because the ASEAN countries and Asia as a region have exploding middle classes that will be purchasing vehicles, homes and a variety of products at unprecedented rates. Some 500 million Chinese are expected to enter the middle class over the next decade; by 2030 around one billion people in China could be middle class — as much as 70 percent of its projected population.

by Clayton Wade Managing Director

Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd. clayton@premierinternational.com

To help put the phrase ‘exploding middle classes’ in perspective, imagine that in 1970 there were approximately 400,000 middle class people in India and China combined. Less than 45 years later we have about 23.6 million middle class persons in India and 109 million Chinese with wealth of between $50,000 and $500,000. It is amazing when you consider that since the year 2000, twice as many Chinese as Americans have joined the middle class and today 2015 China has more middle class citizens than America. Yes, the Chinese dream is coming true for millions and the National Association of REALTORS® is very much aware of this incredible phenomenon in which millions upon millions of Asian middle class citizens are purchasing their very first homes. NAR is preparing for the by conducting as many CIPS training courses as it possibly can. There are now only 44 licensed CIPS instructors that are qualified to conduct the five-day training, and only six reside outside the United States. Seeing this great need for real estate education here in Thailand and Asia as a whole and enjoying both writing and public speaking,

Our very special thanks to Clayton Wade, managing director of Pattaya’s Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd., for preparing this Pattaya Today column. Clayton Wade is managing director of Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd., the Eastern Seaboard’s leader in exclusive property sales and rentals, and managing director of Premier Land and Development Co., Ltd. Clayton Wade has been running Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd., with his wife, Khun Supap, for more than 20 years. He himself has been in the real estate industry for over 30 years, having started his career in the United States where he was licensed and practiced both real estate sales and property management in Seattle, Washington. Wade is a Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS) and a CIPS certification instructor

I took my second CIPS course two years ago, then went on to participate in a CIPS Instructors class with NAR instructor Aida Turbow, a top instructor. I received an official letter from the National Association of Realtors September 2014 informing me that I had been officially approved as a ® Certified International Property Specialist instructor. More recently (July 2015) I was able to assist CIPS instructor David Wyant during the five-day training in Bangkok. Very soon I will be teaching my own CIPS Training Course classes and I am really looking forward to being a part of the fantastic growth in real estate professionalism across Asia which, although in its infancy, is already moving fast. For example, Terry Blackburn of Ensign Media—organizers of the Thailand Property Awards— after almost 10 years now has annual awards in Thailand, Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Southeast Asia and China; eight of those events have been launched in just the last three years! He also is a council member with the Gerson Lehrman Group, the New York-based international research and consulting firm, and is a registered consultant with the Coleman Research Group in Hong Kong. He has been a national panel judge with the Thailand Property Awards for almost 10 years. property industry are exploding across ASEAN and across Asia to Russia, India and the entire Middle East; Thailand is quickly surfacing as the hub of this great race to educate and accommodate the growing needs of the tremendous booming market. With the support and drive of NAR officials like Nancy Suvarnamani and RESAM’s Somsak Chutisilp, we will see more and more education and support for professionals in our industry. Just take a look through the many local Pattaya real estate publications and note how many REALTORS® display their CIPS logos within their advertising. Yes, real estate proficiency in Pattaya has come a long way. There are now 10 to 15 CIPS agents serving the Eastern Seaboard; in coming years you will see these numbers increase steadily as a result of our coming CIPS International Property Specialist training courses. LEGAL ADVICE

by Magna Carta Law Office

Thailand Work Permit

What is the importance of obtaining a work permit? If you are a foreigner intending to work in Thailand, you are subject to the Alien Employment Act, which requires you to have a work permit to be issued by the Ministry of Labour, unless the work you are to perform is an approved temporary and urgent work for a period not exceeding 15 days. In accordance with the format and procedures prescribed under the Ministerial Regulations, a work permit defines the locality you are permitted to work, length of time permitted to work, category or nature of work and the employer for whom you will be working. Failure to comply with Thailand’s employment regulations shall be punishable by fines and/or imprisonment. What are the qualifications of an alien entitled to apply for a work permit? • Having residence in the Kingdom or having permission to stay in the Kingdom temporarily in accordance with the Immigration Law (NonImmigrant Visa) • Not applying for work in any of the 39 occupations reserved for Thai nationals as stated in the Royal Decree B.E. 2522. • Having the knowledge and/or skills to perform the work as stated in the application for a work permit. • Not being insane or mentally sick; not suffering from leprosy, tuberculosis, drug addiction, alcoholism, and elephantiasis. • Never having been imprisoned for violation of an Immigration Law or an Alien Working Law at least one year prior to the date of application. What are the typical jobs in Thailand that are open to foreigners? Any work may be performed by foreigners provided that it is a job that will not in any way compromise national security or career opportunities of Thai people, and that calls for foreign labour for reasons of national development. The following are some of the job categories that foreigners are most likely to fall into: • Teaching English and Translation • Computer and Information Technology • Engineering • Writing and Editorial • Sales • Hotel and Restaurant Management • Music and Entertainment • Specialized Skills • Proprietorship What are the criteria for the issuance of a work permit? • Employers whose business has a registered paid-up capital of not less than 2 million baht are entitled to apply a work permit for their prospective

foreign employees. A work permit shall be issued to one alien worker for every 2 million baht registered paid-up capital, but no more than 10 work permits shall be allowed per company. However, certain considerations apply in certain situations. For the alien who is married to a Thai national, the amount of investment capital required in order to obtain a permit shall be reduced to half of the amount prescribed above. • The required minimum number of Thai employees per foreign employee must be met by the employer; the standard ratio is four Thai employees to one foreign employee. • The minimum salary requirement prescribed by the Immigration Rule shall be followed. • Companies must comply with the laws of the Business Development and the Revenue Departments by fulfilling their tax and social security obligations. Companies who fail to comply shall not be eligible to apply for a work permit for their foreign prospective employees. What is the standard validity of a work permit? An authorized official may grant a work permit to an alien in the Kingdom according to the necessity of the work, but for not longer than two years. If the duration of employment of a foreigner is less than one year, a work permit will be granted for not longer than the period requested. An application for renewal must be submitted before the expiration date of a valid work permit. Expired permits cannot be extended; new application must be completed to obtain a new work permit. Can a permit holder work anywhere in Thailand other than the location specified in his/her work permit? Any intention to change or increase the category of work, employer, working locality or conditions shall be realized only upon the approval of the registrar in accordance with the rules and procedures prescribed under the Ministerial Regulations. The employer is prohibited from employing a foreign worker who does not have a work permit or employing them to engage in a work other than the job description or condition specified in the work permit. Any violation shall be liable to a fine and/or imprisonment.

Did you know that the rules relating to UK inheritance tax (IHT) are quite different for those married to non-domiciled wives, who are not UK citizens? With the current rate of tax at 40 percent, above thresholds, serious consideration should be given to mitigating the effects on your estate. As far as the UK is concerned, there are two separate issues which have an effect on an individual, or couple’s tax status. The first is non-residency, the second being non-domiciled. It is still relatively straightforward to establish non-residency; however, it is not as easy to be certain whether HMRC will regard you as non-domiciled even though you, as a UK citizen, are now an expatriate. In fact, there are UK citizens living abroad that could well be deemed as still UK domiciled, even though they may have lived overseas for some years, leaving the door open for the UK government to impose IHT on their estate. From the UK’s perspective, all foreign nationals who do not, de facto, live in the UK would be regarded as non-domiciled. Therefore, if you are UK domiciled, but have a non-domiciled wife, you could be leaving a substantial legacy to HMRC when you die. This is because a non-domiciled spouse loses the all-important inter-spouse transfer allowance, which normally allows a wife, or husband, to inherit all of their spouse’s wealth free of IHT. Instead a tax-free limit is placed on the transfer between a UK citizen and his/her non-domiciled spouse. Let’s take a look at an example of how this might work in practical terms:The Problem The example below relates to UK inheritance tax inter-spouse transfers - assets quoted in GBP UK Domiciled Spouse Home in Thailand 500,000 Cash at Bank 150,000 Investment portfolio 300,000 Gross Estate* 950,000 IHT Payable on death NIL

Non-Domiciled Spouse 500,000 50,000 300,000 950,000 250,000

* (Assuming no mortgages, other liabilities or gifts made to trusts within the last seven years) A Possible Solution/Outcome With careful planning, in most cases, it is possible to shelter both the cash and investment portfolio from IHT which will effectively: • Save 130,000 GBP inheritance tax • Equalise the treatment of IHT for your non-domiciled spouse • Mitigate IHT on first death • Create a TAX-FREE income for life • Maintain control over who benefits from your wealth • Allow you to choose how your spouse receives your wealth; a lump sum, or an income • Preserve your wealth for your family, rather than the UK Treasury Each case is individual and should be properly assessed as such. Spending a little time organising your affairs could help preserve your life’s accumulated assets for the benefit of your loved ones. ONYX Hospitality Group announced that three of its hotels in Thailand are amongst only 11 nationwide to be honoured with the prestigious Kuoni Water Champion Award. The international hospitality provider is also the only group to have hotels in three different destinations receiving this recognition, which validates each property’s commitment towards tracking water usage, managing water supplies efficiently and raising guest awareness on sustainability. Amari Boulevard Bangkok, Amari Phuket and OZO Chaweng Samui entered a long-term engagement on sustainable water management with Kuoni, one of the world’s largest travel industry service providers. All three properties excelled in a range of sustainable activities recommended by Kuoni, including the installation of water meters, calculation of consumption data and implementation of watersaving practices.

According to data collected by Kuoni, all three hotels collectively saved almost 2,500 cubic metres of water within a two-month period, the equivalent of a full Olympic-sized swimming pool, as a result of these water management initiatives. The Kuoni Water Champion Award is an integral component of the company’s water champion programme. To support the hotels during the implementation phase in Thailand, Kuoni, in collaboration with local consultant Nicolas Dubrocard, developed and published a sustainable water management manual in English and Thai. The aim of the manual is for the end-user to have the tools necessary to implement step-by-step a sustainable water management in their own operations, including an accompanying set of Excel worksheets to calculate water consumption and cost-benefit analyses of the improvement mechanisms.

Youth Focus Taking hands: School, Parents, Students and the Local Community The Reggio Emilia Approach The Reggio Emilia approach to education focuses on child-centred and social reconstruction values to learning. The values of a child-centred approach can be viewed by the importance Reggio Emilia places on children’s interests and allowing them the freedom to construct knowledge individually. The Reggio Emilia approach was developed by Loris Malaguzzi and parents from the region of Reggio Emilia after World War II during the social reconstruction of Europe. The people from Reggio Emilia wanted children to be respected and viewed

as powerful individuals with social rights and had a vision of changing the local community. I believe that The Reggio Emilia approach places a high value on learning through interaction and communication between children, teachers, parents and the local community. Parents

by Edward Emmett

are encouraged to participate in the children’s development at various levels. This includes school meetings, supporting observation from home through documentation and daily discussions about their child’s progress. The teacher at the beginning of every school year

should have meetings with parents to discuss observation, child development and give opportunities for them to voice any issues or suggestions they have about the upcoming academic year. There should also meetings every three months that parents attend to have further discussions about all aspects of the school and classroom. Parents must feel welcome to arrange private meetings at any time if they want to be involved in their child’s learning. Ways this could be implemented by a teacher could be having phone calls and email

exchanges with parents on a weekly basis as well as regular scheduled meetings with the option of language translators when necessary. Reggio Emilia views the child as a collective responsibility of the local community and involves parents in the teaching process. Parents should be encouraged to volunteer with helping and offering support to children in learning about the local community and different customs and traditions. Teaching children about the local community is important in their development through

intercultural transmission. Parents should be invited to teach children about the local community through different projects. These include learning about community helpers, school trips and festivals and celebrations held at the school and in the classroom. GIS students rewarded for being top in Thailand Garden International School (GIS) students have been given top IGCSE awards at a special ceremony in Bangkok. Jun Beom Chi was Top in Thailand for IGCSE Music, while Arjit Verma was Top in Thailand for an incredible three subjects: World Literature, Geography and Coordinated Science. Dr Ben Schmidt, regional director, Southeast Asia and Pacific for Cambridge International Examinations, presented the awards at an Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards ceremony at Shrewsbury International

School in Bangkok. GIS had the fourth highest number of awards for the whole of Thailand – only three large international schools in Bangkok had more winners. It also had more awards than any other school in this region. A spokesman for Cambridge said, “Such results demonstrate the enormous talent, dedication and passion for learning among students. It is also a clear indication of the high quality of support from teachers, schools and parents in the Cambridge network.” Jun Beom’s achievement is even more remarkable as his sister Sarah won exactly the same Top

International Baccalaureate launches Student Registry The International Baccalaureate has launched the IB Student Registry. Free for IB students, this registry will allow for students in the last years of the Middle Years Programme, or who are pursuing the Diploma Programme or Career-related Programme, to create an online portfolio which includes short personal essays, extended essays, CAS details, course credits and more. University admission offices will be able to use this subscription service to reach these highly sought-after students.

When Jun Beom joined GIS he was an ESL (English as a Second Language) student, but quickly progressed. He is now studying for the International Baccalaureate Diploma at GIS. Jun Beom, who started playing piano when he was six, also plays bass, guitar, drums and violin. Since joining GIS four years ago, he has taken part in numerous performances, as part of rock bands, the choir and orchestra. He said, "I think I want to use music as my job but it will always be there

“For years, admissions officers at the most prestigious colleges and universities have asked us how they can access the pool of IB students they want to come and be part of their campus community,” said Ian Chambers, director, Asia Pacific for the International Baccalaureate. “Studies have shown that IB students are well prepared to handle the rigorous academics of higher education. “Universities actively seek to bring IB students to their campuses and this student registry is a great tool to help those admissions officers reach IB students from across the world.”

whatever I do, maybe I'll join a rock band as a hobby." He also had some tips for those wanting to improve their musical skills, "Learn the basics first and then just practice a lot and enjoy what you're doing. Don't force yourself to do what you don't like." Jun Beom thanked his music teachers for helping him become the best in Thailand, saying, "I would like to thank my Music teachers at GIS. Mr and Mrs Shiells helped me get through the IGCSE course; I think that's why I did so well." Arjit Verma was named as Top in Thailand for three subjects: Coordinated Science, Geography and World Literature. In total Arjit was awarded 9 IGCSEs, all with A's. For every subject, Arjit scored more than 90 percent. What is particularly impressive is that Arjit’s awards come in three different areas: Literature, Humanities and Science. IGCSE Coordinator Mr Stokes said, “This is an incredible achievement for both students. It shows that GIS students really are incredibly talented and dedicated.” IGCSEs are the International General Certificate of Education awards; the main exam in the UK for 16 year olds. This & That Did the Titanic really hit an iceberg?

Popular Conspiracy Theories On the face of it, the Titanic was plain sailing. She hit an iceberg in mid Atlantic in 1912 on her maiden voyage and sank two hours and forty minutes later with the loss of 1,500 lives. But not everybody agrees and there are lots of divergent theories. In his 2003 book, Captain L.M. Collier claimed that what the Titanic hit was low lying pack ice and not a berg. He argues that what the lookouts spotted was not haze (as

they later testified at the official inquiries) but pack ice. He adds that if the ship had truly hit a berg, the damage would have been much more substantial and she would have gone down in a matter of minutes. The length of the sinking process strongly suggests pack ice which caused damage to the first five of the watertight compartments. The trouble with this theory is that a good many witnesses actually saw the iceberg and

bits of it indeed shaved off onto the promenade deck. An engineer, Robert Essenhigh, in 2004 released a theory that a coal fire led indirectly to the iceberg collision. He claims that a pile of stored coal had started to smolder and, to get control of the situation, more coal was put into the furnaces which led to unsafe speeds in dangerous waters. The author states that fire control teams were on standby at Cherbourg and Southampton because of a fire in the stockpile. Such fires, he claims, commonly restart after they have been supposedly extinguished. Actually, many Titanic historians accept that there was a smoldering fire in the coal bunkers throughout the voyage. That wasn’t uncommon in the days of steam and the problem could be handled by constant dousing. Robin Gardiner actually wrote a whole book entitled “Titanic – The Ship That Never Sank” in which he concludes that the ship which sank was in reality the Titanic’s sister ship, the almost identical Olympic, in what was an elaborate insurance scam. The Olympic had been involved in a collision with another ship in 1911 and the White Star line was not properly insured unless the ship sank. Rather than repairing

Olympic, the company decided to sink it in order to claim the insurance money. Gardiner went on to claim that the Olympic, posing as the Titanic, actually hit a blacked out vessel and not an iceberg. He does not believe an iceberg could have caused so much damage to a doublehulled ship. If the theory is true (ahem!) then the real Titanic assumed the identity and name of the Olympic and spent the next 23 years merrily sailing the oceans blue. The Olympic – sorry the Titanic – was retired from active service in 1935 and broken up. Yet another theory is that the Titanic was cursed by an Egyptian mummy, possibly the corpse of the priestess of Amen-Ra who lived around 1050 BC. After the discovery of the mummy in Egypt in the 1890s, the purchaser ran into serious illness and misfortune and gladly donated his purchase to the British Museum. The mummy was eventually purchased by the journalist William Thomas Stead who dismissed the curse as nonsense and hit the body in his car which he was transporting to the United States on Titanic. Stead reportedly divulged to passengers the night before Titanic sank he had a cursed mummy aboard. The theory

goes on to argue that the dead priestess conjured up enough evil spirits to create a terminal accident. No historians have adopted the Unlucky Mummy theory although the idea has been the subject of a couple of TV shows, including a 1950s episode of Douglas Fairbanks Presents. The British Museum has denied knowing much about the tale but did admit that the lid of the coffin of a priestess had been stolen. The ideas keep coming. A very recent suggestion is that the Titanic sank because the watertight doors were closed, causing the Titanic to start listing and to go down by the head. If the doors had been left open, goes the theory, Titanic would have settled slowly on an even keel and remained afloat long enough for all the passengers and crew to be rescued. So this is a case of a safety precaution hastening everyone’s demise. However, the Discovery Channel on TV did a simulation to show that leaving the watertight doors open would have caused the liner to capsize an hour earlier than she actually did. Finally, a Titanic enthusiast Douglas Woolley put forward the theory that Titanic had been sunk by a torpedo from a German submarine in a story eerily anticipating

what happened to the Lusitania three years later. Mr Woolley seemed to have forgotten that the first world war actually started more than two years after the sinking of the Titanic and that, in any case, a German submarine would hardly be found off the Grand Banks. Well, you pay your money and you take your pick. Perhaps the most amazing fact about the Titanic is that the discovery of the wreck in 1985 has only multiplied the conspiracy theories rather than diminished them. Next year, 2012, will be the centenary anniversary of the Titanic disaster. Expect to hear that the doomed liner was attacked by aliens or overwhelmed by a tsunami or is about to be brought to the surface (in bits). You ain’t heard nothing yet.

Single? Here Are 5 Simple Tips To Help You Find Your True Love (Finally!) Great examples of classes you can take are cooking classes or classes that teach photography – both areas of interest that attract lots of passionate people. Don’t despair if you don’t meet that special someone, as you have just made yourself a more interesting person and learned some new skills.

Some people are of the opinion that there is one person and one person only who can be their soul mate; the yin to their yang, and the one they are destined to spend the rest of their lives with. But with our busy workaholic lifestyles, who has the time to seek out this special someone? And when we do meet a special person, is he our soul mate and the one we are to have and to hold by our side for eternity, or until death do we part? Following are a few ideas you can use to make this challenging task somewhat easier… 1. Learn Patience You never know when that magical moment is going to happen. It could be tomorrow, or 10 years from now. You could be lucky and get to grow old with your soul mate from a young age, with all the trappings of life such as marriage, houses, cars and kids. It could also be that this isn’t meant for you, and you have something to learn first before you can settle down with your soul mate. Just remember that when you do finally meet your soul mate, something will light up inside you and you will ‘just know’. 2. Keep an Open Mind and Heart You may have only one soul mate but that doesn’t mean you can’t love others as you make your way through life. Take love and happiness from wherever you can find it. Your Mr Right may look nothing like what you imagined, and you may finally meet them in a place entirely unexpected. The only real way to find out is to go on as many dates as possible, with as many different partners as you can. 3. Learn New Things and Discover New Hobbies Classes and activities are an excellent way to make new friends; it may even be possible that your soul mate is attending that very same class. So join up with classes that explore activities you have an interest in, and attract like-minded people you can interact with.

4. Internet Dating Might be Fun Not a day goes by without hundreds of people igniting the spark of love through meeting on the Internet. This is a worldwide phenomenon and it could be that your soul mate does not even reside in the same country as you.

Aquarius (Jan23-Feb22) Aquarians make everyone jealous because they have a ridiculously high sex drive. They are forever on the lookout for sexual pickups whether it be in the supermarket, the library or even at a funeral. They have a secret desire to go naked in public which is why a good number have been deported from Thailand in recent years. Research shows that many pop stars and other undesirables were born in early February. Pisces (Feb23-Mar22) Everywhere you go laughter and comedy follow you. This would be fantastic if you were trying to be funny, but alas that’s not true. You are a complete social disaster, believing for example that The Big Dipper is a constellation next to The Milky Way. For this reason Pisceans should avoid quizzes and competitions at all costs. For you, working out why the chicken crossed the road is postgraduate material. Aries (Mar23-Apr22) Hitler was an Aries man which says it all. Your problem is that you think violence is the answer to every problem. Many Aries born men are club bouncers or debt collectors who become too big for their boots. Hitler in his youth was a house painter but this was simply to give him an excuse to start arguments with the people living there. Thinking of you as a ram is laughable as impotency awaits you in every encounter. Taurus (Apr23-May22) If you feel your life is going nowhere that’s because it is true. To start with, your personal habits are disgusting, smoking when taking a shower and not washing properly under your arms and between your legs. You are also pig ignorant which doesn’t help. When filling in a form asking you for your sex you are supposed to give your gender and not write “Yes Please”. Gemini (May 23-June22) You are a schizophrenic but don’t realize it. You imagine you are Socrates and Plato combined but a more likely duo is Laurel and Hardy who slept together even though they didn’t fancy each other. Geminis speak very loudly which is unnecessary as they are usually talking to themselves. They also imagine they are ambidextrous which means they can pick their nose with both hands at once. Ugh! Cancer (June23-July22) Cancerians are forced to be loners because they are never invited to parties. They are always trying to help other people without knowing how to assist. SWAT teams show up at their house because someone has reported a hostage situation. More Cancerians than any other star sign are thrown out of the Samaritans for giving bum advice to the suicidal, for example where to buy handcuffs and plastic bags.

You can start by localizing your search to potential partners in your area but just make sure you are open to all possibilities, as many lifelong relationships have been started despite the loving couple being separated by miles of ocean. 5. Put yourself Out There You won’t meet anybody if you stay indoors by yourself all the time. If the search for your soul mate is going to have any chance of success then you need to start socializing.

This task is much easier if you have hobbies such as hiking, bowling, or cycling. Venues on the Internet such as Meetup make it a breeze to find groups in your area that allow like-minded individuals to safely get together and make new friends, or maybe even meet that special someone. If you don’t get out much and a friend throws an invite your way, be sure to accept it. Shift your schedule around if you have to, as you never know where such things may lead. It would be a shame to miss out if something special was meant to happen and you weren’t there. Leo (July 23-Aug22) You like to grab attention any way you can. Many people who set fire to themselves at demonstrations are Leos as are those who steal knickers from clothes lines in the middle of the night. You like to kiss mirrors a lot. People like you are forever searching for affection but you never find it because the population at large regards you as a jerk. Some Leos claim to be gay but this is only to draw attention to themselves. Virgo (Aug23-Sep22) You are obsessed with cleanliness and even examine your toothbrush with a magnifying glass. You are also dangerous. Virgos commit most of the world’s drive-by shootings and, when challenged, say it’s because the owner never cleaned his car. You also like opening and closing the fridge door continually for hours on end, just to try and fool the light into switching itself on and off wrongly. Libra (Sep23-Oct22) Libras eat a great deal but have no insight into the culinary arts. They think that fusion cuisine is two sausages stuck together and an Indian take-away is a Red Cross parcel. They also believe that fast food is running down the road with fish and chips after failing to pay the bill. Librans are so hopeless at general knowledge that they don’t even know the difference between milk coffee and coffee with milk. Scorpio (Oct23-Nov22) You think the whole world is against you yet fail to understand why you have never been abducted by aliens. You see conspiracies everywhere and think the Titanic was sunk by a stray torpedo. It has been shown conclusively that most Scorpios are very hairy and this is particularly true of the women. You cheat at cards but it doesn’t do you any good as you don’t know what trumps can actually do. Sagittarius (Nov23-Dec22) Sagittarians have a great love of adventure come what may. Several booked a passage on the Lusitania after the Germans threatened to sink it. Others rushed to British railway stations when the IRA bombing campaign was at its height in the 1970s. Their lack of fear explains why Sagittarians often accept jobs such as fairground freaks. Most of the applicants for the recent vacancy of hangman in India were born in December. Capricorn (Dec 23-Jan22) Capricorns are ambitious, self-glorifying and as dull as hell. This explains why most politicians are Capricorns and why global warming is unlikely to be challenged early enough. They love to talk into their mobile phones whilst everyone is watching, even though they don’t have anyone to call. Most of the people arrested for grand larceny and counterfeiting are born in early January. Jack the Ripper was a Capricorn.

Local Sports Rothwell rules the roost! RACE REPORT

Stuvik soldiers on in the desert

Round 8 of the GP3 Series took place in the famous Bahrain circuit, this time however, the GP3 event would be hosted in conjunction with the World Endurance Championship instead of Formula 1 to 'fill in' for a German Grand Prix that never happened. Sandy Stuvik races for Singha Corporation, The Pizza Company, Dacon Inspection Services, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand, and the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Qualifying: Sandy – 23rd 1:48.815 Esteban Ocon – 1st 1:46.684 The GP3 qualifying session got underway in the sweltering heat at midday, this would be a test of man, machine, and the Pirelli tyre as the drivers try to find the fastest way around the Sakhir circuit without compromising the life of the tyre too much. “Qualifying was very difficult and with all the different tyre compounds on the track this weekend made it even more difficult to know where the grip is, and how much of it there actually is. Nevertheless the session was one to forget as there was a miscommunication in the team that led to us teammates impeding one another.”

Race 1: Sandy – 13th Kirchhofer – 1st

The first race of the weekend for the GP3 Series took place at 1:20 pm, once again meaning the drivers would face a challenge that has been unseen throughout the season: heat. This would also take a toll on the Pirelli tyres, making it interesting to see who would conquer the abrasive Sakhir circuit, and finish the race with enough tyres to fight for points. “There was a lot of tyre degradation in this race because of the heat and the abrasiveness of this circuit, and from the second lap of the race I was saving my tyres a lot but still keeping up with the pack. Towards the end it was easy to see those that did not save their tyres and I could overtake. Unfortunately we couldn't get into the top 10 after a long hard race.”

Race 2: Sandy – DNF Ghiotto – 1st The second race of the weekend took place in the morning at 9. However, it would be a very short race for Sandy. “On the first lap of the race coming into the last corner I am slipstreaming my teammate Seb Morris. He blocks once and I remain behind and just before the corner I am on the inside when he blocks again and our tyres make contact. That is what you don't see in the TV coverage, at that point my car is heavily damaged and I have no control of it. Then I continue skidding with no brakes or any control of the car and unfortunately hit Matheo Tuscher, before going head on into the barrier at very high speed. It's no doubt this was my hardest impact but apart from a few bruises I am ok.” After the race, the stewards deemed that it was the fault of Seb Morris for making multiple moves to block and causing a dangerous accident.

a reasonable level which is supposed to be the case. You may notice some familiar names up on the podium, and on top with a 38-point round was Alan Rothwell who is making his stamp on most leader boards these days. You will also find Ian Brimble back in town for a few weeks and chances are this Texas-based Englishman will find the podium many more times. Not easy to do shooting off just a 5 handicap! Nice going guys!

It looks like a two- to three-month job so we will keep you posted as to the progress. The improvements they have done here at KBSC are all maturing very nicely now. The bunkers are perfect (I should know) and the rest of the course was immaculate. The only thing I disagree with is the par-5 with that huge tree and creek in front of the green. They are letting that beautiful fairway grow into rough right in the middle of the fairway. I just don’t get it. What would Kato-San say? First day scores saw Ian Brimble jump into the lead with 36 points on the card. Maurice Pummels Pattavia by Derek Brook

This Friday the Tropical Golfers headed out to Pattavia CC. With no chance of rain in the forecast it was a good day to enjoy well-watered fairways without getting watered ourselves. The drive to Pattavia is one of the longer ones, but the trip was surprisingly smooth. Some new shortcuts helped. Pattavia is one of those courses that got it right. Overall in excellent condition with well-maintained fairways and greens, and at 1,050 baht to walk is great value. Other courses that want to charge significantly more for less would do well to visit here. Putting the greens are among the most difficult in the area, fast and highly sloped. A real test of skill. Speaking of skill, a few golfers really showed theirs this day. When the counting was done, PSC Golf Chairman Maurice Roberts (h'cap

14) bested the field with room to spare with 39 points. Maurice did so well this day he brought his business manager along. Next in line frequent winner John Davis (14) did well with 36 points, edging

out Ted Morris (15) on countback, and poor Brian Gabe (18) was left in the dust. Near pins: Landis Brooks (2), Ted Morris (2) Long putt: Maurice Roberts

Local Sports PSC Golf from the Phantom Golf Society by Peter Blackburn Rees & Gabe triumph in the jungle! We had golfers join us from Colin’s Golf Bar for the competition on this day making for very healthy total of 29 golfers ready to tackle the Jungle Course at Wangjuntr. We left our bars at 8:30 am and it was a trip of 90 minutes mainly due to the extensive roadworks on 331 and after the check-in and long drive to the first tee our first group got away 30 minutes later than our scheduled 10:30 am time. It was very hot so we loaded up with water and

I must say that this being my first time at this particular layout I was “blown away” by the spectacular views on many of the holes. As for the degree of difficulty it was very hard for first-timers with lots of “blind” shots, and many of the greens were massive compared to what we are used to; regardless of the low scoring most enjoyed the experience. We had two flights with A flight for handicaps 0 to 14 and B flight for players with handicaps of 15 and over; there were four places in each flight. We also had nearest-thepins on all four par 3s and longest first putts on three holes with Colin Davis chipping in to help with the prizes. A flight was won by Roger Rees with 34 points and Christian “Psycho” Boysen finished second with 32 points. With two golfers on 30 points, a countback was

required to determine third and fourth spots and that resulted in Thomas Nyborg (16-point back nine) taking third spot from Chris Martin (12-point back nine) in fourth place. Brian Gabe took out the B flight with 34 points and Barry Elphick was second with 31 points. Another countback was required with two players on 29 points and that saw Torben Lindgaard (15-point back nine) end up in third place with John Knight (13-point back nine) finishing fourth. Results A Flight – 0 to 14 1st – Roger Rees (13) – 34 points 2nd – Christian Boysen (10) – 32 points 3rd – Thomas Nyborg (11) – 30 points 4th – Chris Martin (13) – 30 points B Flight – 15 & over 1st – Brian Gabe (18) – 34 points 2nd – Barry Elphick (24) – 31 points 3rd – Torben Lindgaard (29) – 29 points 4th – John Knight (15) – 29 points

this trip by scoring 39 points and won the day on countback from two others. In second spot was Svend Hommel (18-point back nine and 13 points on the last six holes) with Aussie Terry Dreier (18-point back nine and 12 points on the last six holes) finishing third and Richard “Banjo” Bannister took fourth place with 38 points.

Bill McGarvie signs off with another win! There were four groups signed up for this particular game at Silky Oak and your writer had to sit this one out due to a leg injury, so the report will be brief. Teeing off a little earlier than scheduled, the course was reported to be in fine condition and the weather was excellent. Looking at the scores it seemed that most enjoyed the round which was finished in a little over four hours. Having been with us for four weeks and playing some great golf, Bill McGarvie (20-point back nine) celebrated his last game

Returnees clean up! by San Mig Stu

Twenty-one was the enthusiastic number in the field for today’s game, we were heading for the great course of Pattavia. It is a 45-plus-minute journey but one has to say well worth the trip. I was thinking as we were heading up the highway there would be literally hundreds of thousands of people that would love to swap places with us! Welcomes were handed out to returnees Don Richardson, Colm Mullen, Geoff Bracegirdle and Dennis Steele. A special welcome was given to our regular “Ricey” who has been absent due to fighting the dengue fever virus. One sad farewell to Bill “Shooter” McGarvie heading back to the states. Travel safe, Bill, we hope

to see you again real soon! The staff and management at Treasure Hill wish you bon voyage. The weather was hot, however, a light breeze prevailed which kept playing conditions quite pleasant. Rifkin was hot under the collar when heard yelling out of a bunker, “Move your left foot”; boy some people are dumb! The course was in great nick and all commented on how well it was presented…there were however murmurs of discontent with the difficulty of the greens but the general consensus was that we should learn to be better putters! We all should be aware of the greens on this wonderful course. Max Bracegirdle, after five holes, was starting to think

that he should have bought a bucket and spade instead of his clubs. There was additional who ha back at camp when one of the happy hackers complained that he was hard done by when he teed off outside the white marker areas and was forced to hit another ball off the tee. Freddy Cuypers reckoned his caddy should have told him of his error, but when the caddy indicated that one of Freddy’s playing group had given the caddie the universal finger to the lip, Freddy lost it as he reckoned he had a good score going at that point of his game. (Note: It always pays to ensure that you tee off behind and within the tee markers.) Geri Crilly gave Stu Rifkin a rules reminder that when your ball clears a water hazard (yellow stakes) and then rolls back into the water, the player cannot drop his ball where it landed before rolling backward into the hazard. Instead he must replay his last shot or take a drop in a line with where his ball first crossed the hazard back to the tee…Thanks, Geri! Many of the returnees to The Growling Swan were winners today with Dennis Steele taking out first place, regular star golfer Sal Brizzi one shot behind came second and many countbacks for third, fourth and fifth were needed to sort out the remainder resulting in Sandy Leiper taking third, Graham “Ricey” Rice fourth and our gentleman golfer Ebrahim rounding off the fifth

You & Your Pets Ready for a problem-free pet? Hasbro has the answer On the heels of Japan’s having created a robotic toy cat made of acrylic fiber, Hasbro, Inc. has come up with a line of perfect pets for seniors. Launched last month, Companion Pets is Hasbro's first foray into products designed specifically for older adults. The first animatronic pet introduced by Hasbro is a cuddly cat that features soft fur, soothing purrs, and pleasant meows. What’s more, the kitten not only looks and feels real, it also responds to being petted, held and hugged. Stroke your furry companion on the head and she will move it towards your hand, demanding more attention (is that realistic, or what?). Rub her back for a while and she will roll over and wait for you to give her a belly rub. Treat her with affection and she will reward you with the gentle hum and vibrations of her purrs. For many seniors, the best attributes of the Pet Cat are what it doesn’t do: It doesn’t make a mess, it doesn’t shed, doesn’t eat, doesn’t need toys or a litter box or anything other than batteries.

Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. The first animal in the Joy For All line, the $99 Companion Pet Cat, available in your choice of three colors, is packed with motion and light sensors to realistically respond to being petted, held, and hugged. And at the end of the day—or anytime you ignore her for a few minutes—your new best friend closes her eyes and goes to sleep, thus helping to extend her interior battery life. The global company conducted extensive consumer research with older adults and caregivers to ensure the appeal of the new line of adult pets, said Ted Fischer, Hasbro vice president of business development. Companionship was important to the happiness of seniors, he added. "Many live alone, miss

having a pet, or are no longer able to care for a pet. While it's not a replacement for a pet, the JOY FOR ALL™ Companion Pet Cat is a life-like alternative that can provide the joy and companionship of owning a real pet, without the often cumbersome responsibilities." For additional information, or to purchase the Companion Pet Cat, go to JoyForAll.com. It’s available in three different fur colors: silver, creamy white, and orange tabby. Other Companion animals will be available soon.

Live in a condo or an apartment?

This lovely pair is not real brothers, they just think they are. Both of these fine boys are friendly and heaps of fun. If you choose either or both of them, please be prepared for lots of excitement.

Newbies

These lovely brothers and sisters would love to come to your house and play. You can choose from either two boys or two girls, maybe you have room for two.

Tigress

Here we have yet another cute kitten: this is one of three beautiful sisters. She is full of beans and just loves tearing about the place with her siblings and other friends whom she has here.

Oreo

Then don’t adopt a Beagle or a Collie. Those two are the nosiest breeds. If you want to be considerate of your neighbors, opt for the Akbash Dog or the Basenji; they are the quietest.

You’re probably aware of family health measures, but do you know what issues are important to provide for your pet’s well-being? This Pattaya Today feature may help answer some common questions.

Limp linked to lungs Pet owners sometimes take their dogs to see the vet for a limp and leave with a diagnosis of lung cancer. What’s the connection? Cancer in the chest can activate the leg bones to grow new tissue which causes swelling and pain in the dog’s legs; it’s called hypertrophic osteopathy. Once the cancer is successfully treated, the problematic condition in the animal’s legs will vanish. A more typical symptom of lung cancer in dogs is a cough, although about 25 percent of dogs have no symptoms until cancer is detected on a chest X-ray.

Going to the Dogs... The most affectionate creature in the world is a wet dog. ~Ambrose Bierce

This handsome, disabled fellow has to wear nappies which normally need changing four times a day. Other than that, he has no other special needs and is quite happy scooting around the place on his bottom!

Cat Corner Tip Cats do NOT always land on their feet. So let’s bust that myth immediately. In fact, just last month a cat jumped from a balcony in Pattaya and landed back first on an electrical transformer. Cats are champs at landing feet first over short distances, thanks to a highly flexible backbone. But they do sometimes land on their heads, sides and backs. And beyond one or two stories, their feet cannot "break" the fall. Their heads and bodies collide with the ground, causing severe injuries. (Death in the most recent case.) Cats with access to a balcony or an elevated, open window may also focus so intently on a bird, that they lose their balance and fall -- called high-rise syndrome. Be aware and take care of your little friend.
