he new director of U-Tapao airport says that the facility, in process of being dramatically expanded, will be run as a public service entity rather than a facility based on cash surpluses.

Rear Admiral Worapol Tongpricha said U-Tapao in Rayong province would operate largely with balanced ledgers, taking in just enough revenue to pay off bills. He added that making a profit had never crossed his mind as that would place higher costs on consumers, namely the general public.

The airport, built by the United States during the Vietnam War but now operated by the Royal Thai Navy, is currently undergoing massive refurbishment to cope with the arrival of

almost one million passengers next year compared with 200,000 in 2015. This number is anticipated to become three million a year by 2018. A new passenger terminal and upgraded facilities are expected to be in place by next June.

Although U-Tapao handles mostly charter flights, it has recently gained scheduled carriers Thai Air Asia and Kan Airways in addition to long-standing flights by Bangkok Airways.

But critics say that there are various impediments which cast doubt on a wholly rosy future. The refurbishment plans are still unclear for ground handling services, airline catering and airport transfer services. Nor does the current development plan include

a cargo terminal. Explaining these reservations, Louis Moser, chairman of the Airline Operators Committee (AOC), said the navy’s insistence that its personnel continue running the airport has raised questions about their ability to deal with the challenges resulting from the expected surge in commercial traffic.

The AOC represents 86 international airlines and 26 aviation service providers operating at Suvarnabhumi.

Moser added that the navy’s “one airport, two missions” designation for U-Tapao, serving both commercial and military purposes, could be problematical. He was concerned that the ongoing military functions of the Continued on page 2

airport would take precedence and create difficulties for business airlines. “U-Tapao will probably only be able to attract narrow-body jets and turboprops operated by low-cost carriers and smallscale international route operators,” stated Moser. The AOC has been lobbying the navy to allow professionals, such as the staff of the Airports of Thailand PLC who run Thailand’s six major airports, to organize and operate U-Tapao as well.

The navy has also been urged to make the development and operation plans of the airport more visible to the industry and to the public with a view to welcoming greater private sector participation and joint investment. In response, the Royal Thai Navy has stated that U-Tapao’s commercial operations will have different staff from those used for military functions, currently 195 naval personnel rising to 260 once the new terminal is up and running. Rear Admiral Worapol said that deficiencies such as lack of a cargo terminal would be addressed by the construction of two warehouses, each measuring 40x50x17 metres,

which would use navy funding. He added that joint ventures might be used for in-flight catering services, a full-flight pilot training school and the airport’s information technology system.

Another question arises from road surface links to the airport. Although Route 331 was widened to four lanes, most tourists still use Sukhumvit Road, consuming more time. The Pattaya Business and Tourism

Association is cooperating with the Tourism Authority of Thailand to coordinate with the Department of Highways to increase the efficiency of the system between U-Tapao and Pattaya. It is expected that the development of the airport will bring many more tourists to Pattaya, resulting in a tripling of annual numbers to around 30 million by the end of the decade.

But it is not clear whether a high-speed rail route between

Rayong and Bangkok, being negotiated as a joint Thai and Japanese venture, will include a stop at Pattaya.

Even if it does, the current Pattaya railway station near Siam Country Club Road is nowhere near the city centre attractions, the principal hotels or the beaches. A previous plan to link the railway station to downtown areas by means of an overhead electric railway appears to have bitten the dust.

Teens fight with Russian victim Police summoned to Soi Pratumnak found an injured Russian visitor nursing a significant head wound. One of the youths allegedly responsible for the attack, Akkapon Mathonglang, 19, said he and his friends were enjoying a quiet drink with a Russian man when the victim came over and started an argument. Akkapon said he had tried to prevent an outbreak of violence but could not explain how the stranger appeared to have been hit with a hard object.

Thai AirAsia inaugurates four new routes at once, flying from U-Tapao Airport to Chiang Mai, Udon Thani, Singapore and Macau with an average load factor of 80 percent. The airline is confident that U-Tapao is ready to accommodate passengers with the strong support of Pattaya and the Eastern Tourism Authority. The airline celebrates the occasion by giving 60 youths from Chiang Mai and Udon Thani their first ever flight experience, flying them to U-Tapao to visit the HTMS Chakri Naruebet.

2 is still undergoing construction to be completed in 2016 and will add the capacity to handle 1,500 more

passengers in each period, allowing the airport to accommodate more travelers a year, in step with Air Asia’s expansion plans with room to welcome further commercial airlines.

Air Asia now operates eight flights from the Rayong-area airport: to Kuala Lumpur four times weekly, Nanning three times weekly, Nanchang four times weekly, Singapore seven times weekly, Macau seven times weekly, Chiang Mai 10 times weekly, Udon Thani seven times weekly and Hat Yai four times weekly, all together reaching a total of 46 flights a week.

The airline has stationed two planes permanently at the airport.

Passengers traveling to U-Tapao are further offered convenience with Air Asia’s City Transfer service, which provides shuttle connections to three locations; Pattaya (Central Festival), Rayong (Fashion Mall

ONYX multiplies happiness with “Dreams Come True” 2015 Pattaya Review The biggest surprise Was probably the idea of the military authorities to return the beach to the public. This involved reducing the space available to the various vendors and “cramping the style” of those looking for a beach chair and other services. Then, on Wednesdays, there were to be no beach chairs or umbrellas available at all. Still, the regime at Pattaya and Jomtien beaches is said to be liberal compared with the bleak seaside situation in Hua Hin and Phuket.

The smallest surprise It was announced that work on the new Sukhumvit underpass had been a little delayed by the autumnal floods which in turn meant that the three-year time limit for the new construction might need to be put back by months. Meanwhile, the traffic queues on the reduced road availability on Sukhumvit have been bad although not so awful as was predicted. Motorists have been most resourceful in getting from north to south whilst avoiding the principal highway. Roll on 2019 or 2020.

The ongoing nightmare The huge number of tour buses has certainly clogged Pattaya’s roads, no matter whether they are moving or are parked for the night. Suggestions that the size of tour buses be regulated – some are gigantic to be sure – have been ignored. In 2015 over one million Chinese visitors visited Pattaya.

One wonders how many tour buses will be on the roads when that number doubles.

DreamJobbing and the Tourism Authority of Thailand launch contest

End of freebies 2015 will be the last year in which motorway access to and from Pattaya will be free. From June 2016, there will be a toll plaza to collect fees from all incoming and outgoing vehicles. The idea is to help pay for some of the many road improvement plans which are still under wraps. Meanwhile, a rail network linking Bangkok with Rayong was said to be approved, although the details are still a bit fuzzy.

Waste of money The prize will likely go to the much-vaunted Pelican crossings which are dotted around the city in the hope of making traffic more orderly as well as assisting pedestrians wishing to cross the road. Problem is that most of the Pelicans have been switched off or are showing a permanent orange blink which somewhat torpedoes the sense of installing them in the first place.

But new pedestrian overpasses are now appearing on Sukhumvit highway.

Best surprise The year witnessed a lot of tourists in taxis leaving their luggage or wallets on the back seat. The good news is that, according to press reports, no fewer than six honest taxi drivers managed to return over 250,000 baht to much-relieved customers. But the rewards were more than disappointing.

One frustrated taxi driver received a mere 500 baht when returning a bag with goodies worth 80,000 baht. Maybe crime does actually pay.

Most obvious weather Pattaya’s perennial drought problem – it was developed originally precisely because it has little rain – was surprisingly relieved by late downpours which continued until the end of November. Whilst the local reservoirs are still only about half-full, 2015 saw the heaviest rainfall in and around the city for many a long year. But the water board says more rain from next April onwards is certainly required if we are to avoid cuts.

Most amazing price The prize for the most expensive packet of cigarettes must go to the member of staff in a bar who charged 300 baht for 20 very ordinary cancer sticks. When the customer queried the cost, he was told that the cigarettes were 100 baht but that the remaining 200 baht were necessary for the motorbike taxi driver who drove to the nearest 7-Eleven (in the same street) as it was raining at the time.

Oddest crime Must surely have been the local pervert who hid down drains and took photos of women’s underwear as they passed above him. He was discovered when he popped his head up from one of the drain holes and, unluckily for him, was hit in the face by a passing motorbike. Who said there is no justice in Pattaya city?

Motorbike driver killed in crash One man was killed outright and five people injured after a speeding motorbike hit another motorbike before crashing into a car and hitting another motorbike coming from the opposite direction.

The dead man, identified as Piamsak Oobkaew, 20, was said to have died immediately from multiple body injuries.

New security system at all Thai airports by 2016

Thailand will introduce a new security procedure, the Advance Passenger Processing System (APPS), at six main international airports beginning December 1. By the end of next year the new system will be in 32 airports nationwide Airports included in the initial stage are Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Mae Fa Luang Chiang Rai International Airports.

The move forms part of ongoing improvements to Thailand’s security systems, to ensure that local and international travellers can traverse the kingdom’s main gateways safely.

The APPS allows immigration officials to run instant background checks on inbound travellers, based on their passport information.

Personal and visa details will be checked against a list of blacklisted or banned individuals. This ensures that any undesirables are stopped

before they officially enter Thailand.

It is not expected that the new system will add greatly to immigration queuing times, but the Airpor ts of Thailand PLC (AOT) is thanking passengers in advance for their patience during the first couple of

weeks of implementation as immigration officials train on the new system.

It is also believed that the new system will not increase the time it takes to pass through immigration, as passenger details are instantly checked against a database held by the Immigration Department

and blacklisted passengers are immediately flagged.

The APPS will be funded by adding 35 baht to the price of all tickets in and out of the Kingdom for all travellers.

While the system is in its early stages, Fast-Pass privileges, either from the airlines or AOT will be suspended.

The Father Ray Foundation and its chief officers turned out in force to welcome the recently-installed US ambassador

to Thailand, Glyn Townsend Davies, as he looked round the many facilities offered for deprived children and young people.

More drain pipes installed

In an attempt to stop flood waters ruining the lives of local community members, Pattaya City workmen installed four extra drain pipes in Soi Sukhumvit 19, Naklua. But they also stated

that one of the main problems occurs when locals drop trash into local canals which then clogs the exit pipes leading to the well-known water chaos.

News made ready More turtles released into sea Elephants for Father’s Day

Admiral Na Arreenich, commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Navy, presided over a merit-making ceremony and the release of 989 baby turtles into the sea along with 89,000 other

marine animals. More than 1,500 officials and members of the public attended the event which was held in connection with HM the King’s 88th birthday joys.

Navy hosts marine conservation activity

The director of Nong Nooch, Kampol Tansajja, asked his public relations team to train a 13-year-old Thai elephant to draw a picture of His Majesty the King with his pet dog,Thongdaeng, in preparation for Father’s Day. This year there was no admission fees for families visiting with father.

Instead there was a special show featuring 40 elephants, some of which are indeed clever enough to draw pictures with their trunks.

Thai student named best in the UK

Admiral Naris Pratoomsuwan, commander-in-chief of Royal Thai Fleet, organized a marine conservation activity at Thai Island and Sea Natural History Museum, Sattahip in line with HM the King’s recent birthday. Events included coral

breeding, releasing shells, tidying up the beach, planting trees and releasing sea turtles into the ocean. The event was designed to illustrate to the public the importance of protecting the sea and its resources.

Cleanup post Loy Krathong

Trash of more than 100,000 kilos was collected by 120 staff of the Pattaya Cleaning Services Division who set to work

to improve the Pattaya beach area following the Loy Krathong celebrations.

University of Southampton PhD student Dr Amonsak Sawusdee (front row, centre) has been named Best Thai Student in the UK (Environment Category) by the Anglo-Thai Society.

Amonsak, from Ocean and Earth Science (OES) at the University, was presented with the award for his study to help return native oysters to UK waters. He joined nine other winners and highly commended students in a ceremony sponsored by the Royal Thai Embassy.

The Anglo-Thai Society Educational Awards for Excellence were launched in 2005 and are designed to ‘acknowledge the achievement and excellence of Thai postgraduate students carrying out research at British Universities’.

Amonsak will now return to his family and career in Thailand as an assistant professor at Walailak University, taking his expertise in shellfish restoration ecology with him.

Colors of Doi Tung returns to Chiang Rai

The Colors of Doi Tung Festival is returning to transform the mountains of Doi Tung into the highest elevated walking street in Thailand at 1,000 metres above sea level, filled with shops, food, arts and entertainments every weekend from now until January 31, and during the entire week from December 26 to January 3.

Officers of Pattaya City Council handed out 1,040 safety helmets to young students at a ceremony held at Sawangboriboon Wittaya School. Students were warned that there were many road casualties, even deaths, every year because of failure to wear the requisite headgear.

Green fashion show at The Bayview Pattaya

The Bayview Pattaya, known for its “green” policies and achievements, held the “Heart of Green, Heart of ASEAN” Fashion Show at the hotel’s The View conference room. The event was aimed to inspire the staff and the audience about what can be done with recycled material. Staff of The Bayview Pattaya, Wave Hotel Pattaya and students of Phothisamphanphitthayakhan School presented ASEAN-themed dresses made out of recyclable material for the fashion show contest.

Models win Fresh Faces

Thirty male and female contestants walked the catwalk in the Fresh Faces Thailand 2015 competition hosted by Pattaya City Hall. The idea was to find international-standard models who can represent Thailand in an international contest to be

held in February next year at Barcelona Fashion Week. The male winner, Rat Rotjana, and the female, Samanta Masuk, both received 50,000 baht, a round trip ticket to Spain and a contract of employment with A1 Models.

There is no doubt that Asia is the fastest-growing region of the world. It is home to 60 percent of the global population and its growth rates show no real signs of abatement. So, economically, One Asia looks set to be the world’s leading power, thanks to the likes of China and India. When you add to this the advent of the ASEAN Economic Community, which is essentially a 10-nation free trade zone beginning to come online next month, it’s clear that the region is on target to be a truly global player and economic powerhouse which could be unmatched for centuries.

That is the positive line of thinking, but it’s also true that Asia is far from being the unified One Asia of some commentators’ dream. Many people say that each country has its own vested interests so that the feasibility of a single Asia is a big question mark. An obvious example is the stand-off in the South China Sea between China, which claims 90 percent of it, and various other states (notably the Philippines) who claim parts. There is a strong suspicion in many minds that China’s aim is to control the seaway through which 60 percent of world commerce passes whilst doubling its oil and gas reserves. China has rejected any kind of United Nations arbitration and insists on dealing separately with other countries in dispute. The United States, with its much-vaunted pivot to Asia, has now become involved in challenging the Chinese claims by sending its planes or warships close to the disputed territories, in particular the Spratly Islands.

The ongoing disputes between North and South Korea are also a warning that cooperation is not an easy path. The Korean War ended in 1953 with an armistice, not a peace treaty, and the technical position is that the two states are still at war. Whilst both North and South Korea pay lip service to the concept of unification, that is no nearer realization today than in the past. It is always possible that the povertystricken North could collapse, but this is a scenario China would not like to see. She has no wish to see American troops, of whom there are 36,000 in South Korea, actually at the Chinese border.

What can the European Union tell us about economic and political cooperation? European states were at each others’ throats for centuries. But today the group, in spite of many problems, remains intact, which is surely a feat in itself. The question, of course, is whether the European Union can or will survive. The recent arrival of so many refugees from Africa, Syria and Afghanistan has put an enormous strain on collective decision-taking. Frankly, nobody can predict what the future holds for the EU, although it is likely that much of the bloc will follow whatever policy is favoured by Germany, the economic powerhouse of the union. But there may well be casualties.

Recent public opinion polls suggest that most voters in Britain will vote to quit in the referendum scheduled for next year or 2017.

Yet it is also the case that the United States brought together many disparate interests and even endured a civil war to create the vibrant state which everyone takes for granted. Indeed, for 20 years after the fall of communism in Russia, the United States was the world’s sole super power, a position now being overtly challenged by the rise of China. Equally, one could count modern India, notwithstanding its problems with Pakistan, which is a successful union of what were once hundreds of princely states and other entities.

In other words, the idea of a One Asia has both strong and weak points. What is required most of all is visionary leadership. China along with Japan (if the two can sit down and talk together) could take a leading role and bring in India to balance things out. Once this trio is on the same page, the probability of success multiplies. These countries are already undertaking various developments all across the region with such projects as China’s ambitious One Road, One Belt transport network.

There is certainly no guarantee that the future of Asia will be integration. One has only to look at the huge differences between the various countries making up the 10-member ASEAN bloc. Singapore is an economic powerhouse with a safe democracy. Laos is still a largely agricultural country. Myanmar is painfully emerging from military dictatorship, a process which will take years to evolve and could even be aborted by a restless military. Thailand’s political future is far from clear, although she is strategically placed at the very heart of the ASEAN powerhouse. There is no doubt that ASEAN will have its ups and downs in coming years, but then so has the European Union. Maybe it is time for Asia as a whole to find a visionary who could help make the region heard on the world stage as one voice. At present there are no obvious candidates.

Our Community Graduation at Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities

In May 2013, and again six months later in November, a group of young people arrived in Pattaya from all over the country. They came in wheelchairs, leaning on crutches and sticks, many were missing limbs and they all came to Pattaya for one thing, to learn. They were nervous about what was going to happen to them, for many it was the first time away from their families and the comfort of their local communities, but

the school was about to change their lives.

While at the school they would study a variety of subjects, but not only does the school teach a student new skills, it also provides accommodation, three meals a day and medical help, all for free.

T w o ye a r s l a t e r , o n the morning of the 4th of December, the students received their graduation certificates.

As the name of each student was called to receive

their certificate from Father Michael Picharn Jaiseri, the course they studied on was announced and so was their place of employment.

One hundred percent of all those who graduated have a job, not just the lowly paid menial jobs which have traditionally been reserved for people with disabilities, but they have a job where they are treated as equals.

Many chose to stay in Pattaya; they have made lots of new friends and are no longer

that ‘poor little disabled kid’ who relies on relatives for everything.

They are smart, knowledgeable and have the confidence to go into the workplace and compete with others.

More than 3,000 young adults living with a disability have graduated from the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities since it opened its doors in 1984.

Jomtien United FC to hold charity football tournament Jomtien United Football Club is a non-profit association that consists of a kids section, a senior and an old gentlemen’s team. Currently the association has over 100 members.

Since 2013, the club have managed a project for children living in slum-like conditions in addition to a football field.

This has resulted in the Pattaya Crocodiles Kids Football team, which now consists of more than 60 children from different nations.

The training for those destitute children as well as the necessary facilities and equipment, including football clothing is free. In support of this purpose the club work together with sponsors and for the first time have organized a charity tournament.

On Saturday, January

23, Jomtien United Football Club will hold a charity tournament with eight teams participating. Four teams have already registered. The Italian ambassador has already pledged his support and presence for the tournament.

Bangkok Pattaya Hospital Christmas Charity Bazaar Bangkok Hospital Pattaya held the annual Christmas charity bazaar for the year 2015. There were many foundations, schools, organizations that participated in this event with lots of performances on stage and bargains at the stalls. Santa also came early to see all the children who had so much fun and joy. All the revenue generated from the event will go to different charity organisations in Pattaya.

Amari Pattaya kicks off the festive season with Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

Amari Pattaya started the most festive season of the year with a special Christmas tree lighting ceremony, led by Richard Gamlin, resident manager. This year, each tree displayed at all lobby areas is beautifully decorated with teddy bears dressed as Santa Claus and Santa Lina. Amari Pattaya will be selling these teddy bears to raise money for charity. The price for one bear is 740 baht and only 1,400 baht for two. 50 years of sartorial success at Jack and Dave’s

Family and friends gathered at the well-known Jack and Dave’s tailoring emporium recently to congratulate and celebrate 50 years of sartorial success to the company. Champagne glasses were raised and clinked to an enterprise that has stood the test of time within the custom made clothing industry.

The creator and founding father of the business was one Damrong, an Indian national born way back in 1939. He immigrated to Thailand with his family in 1947 during the partition period and set up a tailor shop in Paw Daeng, the American Air Base in Korat. In 1976 he moved to Pattaya and established the name we know today, Jack’s International, on Walking Street.

Jack and Dave and his two sons joined in the business which thrived and prospered not only in Asia but expanded into Europe and beyond.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas and nowhere more so than at the Royal Cliff Hotel. The Christmas trees sparkle and shimmer, the decorations festoon the hotel and there’s magic in the air. This hotel makes every visit a special occasion and although any of their coterie of restaurants would make for a superb seasonal treat we are visiting Rossini, their signature Italian restaurant.

Earlier this year Rossini was given an extreme makeover. The space has been rezoned, revitalized and reinvented into one of the classiest classic interiors in Pattaya. The on-trend colours of grey, taupe and tobacco are immediately pleasing and peaceful with the innovative new zoning surprising and unexpected.

For instance, there is now a cigar salon where aficionados of these

smokes can now lean back on leather Chesterfield-type sofas and enjoy premier brands from the world’s best houses. A new “wine by the glass” bar sports a huge tabletop wine centric tablet where at a touch all the relevant information on the wines is available. Recommended bottles border the table and a wall of vintage wines invites inspection. Comfy seating is provided for leisurely sipping.

The main restaurant sports a private salon for six people, a long table for 10 or so, a terrace for 40 people and masses of comfortable seating either booth style or at wonderful wooden blocked tables; seating can accommodate up to 100 people. The resident band, the “Living Harmony Duo” perform a selection of Mediterranean songs contributing

to the soothing ambiance and contemporary opulence that floods the new Rossini.

Chef’s 27 years of culinary experience and his passion for Italian cuisine shines through his menu. The man behind the menu is Massimo Gullota, a Roman born chef with an impeccable pedigree and a contagious enthusiasm for the cuisine of his homeland. Rome adores its pizzas and chef has installed a wood-fired oven from which appear his classic Rome-style pizzas: thin, charred with a crisp crust and sauce laden with a cheesy middle crowned with your favourite toppings and with prices from B.320 they’re a steal.

The wine list is a magnificent assemblage of over 1,000 bottles from the old and new worlds. The Royal Cliff prides itself on the

diversity and eminence of their labels which run from the pinnacle of the wine world at half a million baht to around B.1,000 for the likes of the rest of us. They have been awarded Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence for 12 years now and continue to explore the world in their quest to maintain vini-supremacy.

Even the water menu is something extraordinary, 16 different artisan mineral waters are on offer from Norway to Fiji to the Mediterranean complete with details of their sodium, magnesium and calcium content.

Attentive staff escort you to your table and once seated we selected a glass of the elegant Trabocchetto Pecorino (B.230 ++) whilst we perused chef’s menu. It is a delight with dishes from the length and breadth of Italy, with many regional specialities and even one or two from his mother’s native Sicilian soil. We put ourselves in chef’s capable hands and tucked into the straight-from-theoven forcaccio, pizza bread and crispy sticks served with a piquant tomato salsa and one of the best pesto sauces we have tasted in a long while.

First up was a platter of fish and vegetable antipasti (B.800++ for two people or single serving B.500++).

Crab rested in its scallop shell having been tossed with black garlic and walnuts, sautéed scallops and buttery Fontina cheese made excellent friends, premier smoked salmon had been rolled around creamy Ricotta, a cigar of marinated red pepper revealed an olive pate, a grilled aubergine roll up concealed a slice of Mozzarella with fresh tomato sauce and basil leaves, a mound of crisp fried calamari hid a soft tender centre, and two oblongs of tuna had been flash seared to perfection. Is there a better way to start a meal than with an abundant antipasti platter – the art is alive and well in Chef Massimo’s deft kitchen.

For our main courses we had chosen from the “Specials Board”, a white cod fillet with rocket pesto sauce (B.790++) and grilled swordfish with extra virgin olive oil and Sicilian lemon (B.790++). Both dishes were outstanding, the quality of the fish shining like a beacon only to be further enhanced by the deeply intense sauces. Fish and shellfish do play leading roles but meat lovers will

not be disappointed by the selection of meat dishes such as tender braised veal shank in a red wine and vegetable gravy or from the charcoal grill sharing menu for two which offers a combination of Australian Wagyu beef tenderloin, lamb cutlet, cornfed chicken breast and spicy Italian sausage served with grilled vegetables and a red wine mustard sauce (B.1,800++). Lobster lovers should check out the lobster festival which runs throughout the holiday season.

Dessert brought a chocolate cake of extreme, dark intensity enhanced with rock salt and olive oil (B.290) to deepen its exquisite cocoa essence – it was scrumptious. Partnered by a big sugarly pillow of tiramisu soaked in cream and Amaretto and a creamy panna cotta with that delightful and essential mammary wobble. What a treat – please don’t leave without delving into the delights of Rossini’s desserts. To round off a stunning meal we imbibed a glass or two of Limoncello.

Chef Massimo pushed all our foodie buttons; his cooking is exquisite and his ingredients lavish and authentic. The evening was a hit from the word go; each course produced a riot of richness and wonderful flavours. This is ingredientled food with emphasis on the traditional but pursued with an individual style.

We were directed down to The Beach Club and found ourselves at sea level looking out onto two beachfront swimming pools, equipped with mood lighting and chill-out music with the backdrop of a palm fringed beach. This is their all-day dining outlet with masses of seating in either the air-conditioned interior or out on the spacious terrace overlooking their private beach. Here, guests can enjoy a snack in the afternoon sun or gaze at a sunset with a cool cocktail or a glass of Champagne from their unique selection.

Wednesday evenings from 7 to 10 pm is the night to enjoy this event.

The dynamic sounds of Santos, the Spanish musician, filled the air and the atmosphere was febrile with Mediterranean charisma and enjoyment. We were cordially met by Carlo van Hest, the resident manager, and Sutthipong “Daw” Faiyseela, their public relations manager, who said how excited they were to bring back this Spanish-style evening of wining and dining.

Before we tell you about the attractive culinary items we must tell you the very attractive price for this special Spanish buffet party.

Hold on to your sombreros – it’s only B.899 net for the full fiesta plus free-flow red and white wine, sangria or draught beer. The setting is chic and glamorous beside the pool; high stooled cocktail tables afford casual dining while the stylish tables and rattan armchairs on the beach provide sinking comfort and elegance.

Plates in hand we set forth to taste the European delicacies. First to tempt was the superb selection of cured meats and salads. All the salamis were impeccably sourced, however, the chorizo proved our favourite, it was wonderful, a fiery smoked salami redolent with paprika and cayenne. Shot glasses were packed with juicy marinated vegetables, plus olives and pickles juxtaposed with fat New Zealand

mussels, homemade pate and terrines, stuffed tomatoes, tuna egg mayonnaise and garbanzos dressed with vinaigrette and topped with fish fillets. Molten cheese croquettes and a generous cheese board crammed with eight select cheeses and delicious desserts all vied for our selection. The live paella station was manned by chef behind his paellera glistening with tints of saffron and packed with juicy seafood. The sangria was refreshing, the house wine excellent, the setting perfect and the music evocative of Mediterranean nights.

The Beach Club restaurant here at Pullman Pattaya Hotel G offers daily promotions, all at exceedingly reasonable prices. Every Monday evening Chef Wut’s wok cooks up five local Asian dishes served with a multitude of fresh toppings including masala sweet and sour, black pepper, curry and lots more for B.399. A Flash and Boom from the Past!

I originally wrote ‘Beachside Village to Boom Town’ 10 years ago, in 2005, for the Asia Pacific edition of Tropical Gardens Magazine.

Back then Pattaya was just in its first couple of years of the property development frenzy that has changed the skyline of this once small and quaint fishing village.

I thought our readers might enjoy looking back at a time when Pattaya’s property development was in its infancy….enjoy!

From a small fishing village almost cut off from the outside world just 40 years ago, Pattaya has become Thailand's most successful beach resort city, attracting holiday seekers from every point on the globe. Over the past 10 years, Pattaya has also attracted a large number of new foreign residents and investors. Within the past two years, its residential property market has soared to a level that has surprised everyone.

One of the dominant factors stimulating Pattaya’s high-end property development was the arrival of the international automobile manufacturing industry along the Eastern Seaboard.

Starting in the mid-’90s, Ford, General Motors and BMW kick-started what is currently known world-wide as the Little Detroit of the East.

Each one of these automobile manufacturers attracted an average of 25 to 35 major international suppliers, all of which set up their own factories and offices in the industrial estates of the Eastern Seaboard. At the beginning of this expat executive invasion, there was a strong need for high-end single family houses and condominium apartment rentals. This, of course, lead to highly inflated rental prices.

It was during this same period that it became evident that expat executives were showing a great interest in renting exotic tropical, modern and Bali-style homes and large, beachfront condominiums. It wasn’t long after this that a number of foreign and Thai designers and developers started building or purchasing detached houses and condominiums as investment properties to be leased out to the many expat families moving into the Pattaya area.

The Bubble To truly appreciate the dynamics of the current Pattaya property boom, one must look back to the mid1990s. It was during this period that Thailand’s real-estate business was running red hot; properties in Pattaya couldn’t be built fast enough for the tremendous demand. Thai nationals were spending massive amounts of money on real estate, and the returns were almost immediate. The average Thai consumer didn’t need to know anything about construction quality, interior design or the marketing and sales of property. Prices for land and homes in Pattaya were rising so fast that it seemed you couldn’t lose.

The Bust Then the Asian economic crisis hit. In no time the Thai real-estate investment dream had turned into a nightmare. With the exchange rate plunging to well over 50 baht to the dollar by late 1997, and with so many Thai bank loans attached to the US dollar, the banking industry saw a steady stream of non-performing loans from the property sector.

the crisis, Pattaya and the entire Eastern Seaboard could barely keep up with the demand among expat executives for high-end single family houses and condominium rentals. Once the exchange rate had stabilized in 1999, more and more foreigners moved here seeking to buy homes to live in. The government helped to support the steady growth in sales of houses and condominiums by reducing the costs of transferring titles.

The Boom With the new millennium came a new era — one which would, within a few years, be identified as the Pattaya Property Boom. Less than five years ago, there were six to eight real-estate agencies in Pattaya capable of providing professional property services. Less than five years ago, you couldn’t sell or rent a house or condo if you didn’t advertise in Pattaya’s one English-language newspaper.

Today, Pattaya’s leading real-estate magazines have as many as 90 realestate advertisers, and the editors will tell you that between 90 and 120 new real-estate companies have opened shop--90 percent in the last two years.

There seems to be at least one new real-estate agency, publication, condo or housing development coming on the market every few weeks!

Yes, Pattaya is experiencing unprecedented growth. And the properties are selling.

development just south of Pattaya that had collapsed during the crisis. Several local developers — appreciative of the beauty of these homes and the seductive lifestyle associated with them — started designing and building their own Thai/Bali-style homes.

With the new millennium, Pattaya saw the advent of a new era of housing style and design available for purchase as private homes. This was accompanied by a major influx of foreigners who were more than ready to purchase them. View Talay Villas and Thabali were two of the most successful Thai/Bali-style developments. They offered the consumer a wonderful tropical lifestyle and proved a huge success, selling quickly. In fact, both developments saw quick investment returns as the prices on these homes rose even as they were being built.

Currently, just minutes south of Pattaya towards Bangsarey is the exciting new beachfront community known as Ban Talay. What is bankruptcy?

Bankruptcy is a legal proceeding involving a person or business that is unable to repay outstanding debts. Under Thai law, bankruptcy is an involuntary act whereby the law causes the assets of a debtor to be distributed among its creditors to repay a portion of outstanding debt.

What is secured creditor?

Secured creditor means the creditor holding rights over the property of the debtor in the nature of a mortgage, pledge or right of retention, or a creditor possessing preferential rights which can be enforced in the nature of a pledge.

Secured creditors have the most senior protection in bankruptcy, since they have specific assets that provide a sufficient level of reassurance against default risks. Secured creditors generally have the right to repossess or foreclose on the property when the borrower is in default.

Is there a certain amount of debt before you can file a petition for bankruptcy?

Any creditor owed more than 1 million baht by an individual debtor or more than 2 million baht by a corporate debtor may file a bankruptcy action against such debtor. However, the debtor must first be proven insolvent.

How can a debtor be presumed insolvent?

It shall be presumed that the debtor is insolvent if any of the following proceedings occur: (1) If the debtor transfers property or rights in the management of his property to others for the benefit of all his creditors, whether such be done within or outside Thailand; (2) If the debtor transfers his assets with dishonest intent or fraud, whether such be done within or outside Thailand;

(3) If the debtor transfers his property or creates any right over such property which, if the debtor were a bankrupt, would be deemed an act of preference, whether such act be done within or outside Thailand; (4) If the debtor does any of the following things in order to avoid or delay payment of his debt: a. Leaves or remains outside Thailand; b. Leaves the premises in which he has resided, or conceals himself in any premises, or absconds, or closes his place of business; c. Removes assets out of the jurisdiction of the court; d. Consents to a judgment ordering the payment of money which he should not pay; (5) If the debtor has had his property seized under a writ of execution, or there is no property of any kind capable of being seized for the payment of the debt;

(6) If the debtor informs any of his creditors, or the court in any action that he cannot pay his debts; (7) If the debtor submits a proposal for the compromise on his debts to any two or more of his creditors; (8) If the debtor informs any of his creditors that he cannot pay such debt; (9) If the debtor receives demands from his creditor to pay his debt not less than twice, at intervals of not less than 30 days, and does not pay the debt.

How long does a bankruptcy stay on my record?

An individual who is adjudged to be bankrupt shall be immediately discharged from bankruptcy after the lapse of three years from the date of adjudication by the court. However, if such a person has had a previous bankruptcy within five years, the automatic discharge period will be extended to five years.

In cases of dishonest bankrupts, the court may extend the period to 10 years, except in cases of special conditions on the request filed by the official receiver or the bankrupt person.

In cases of offense on misappropriation or cheating on borrowings from the public, the automatic discharge period is extended to 10 years.

Retirement Income

Most of us in semi or permanent retirement are reliant to a lesser or greater extent on our remaining nest egg and pension to provide us with an income that will keep the proverbial wolf from the door.

Looking back, in recent years, the results of leaving our hardearned cash to the vagaries of the world’s stock market would have sent a shudder through anyone’s spine.

Banks are paying next to nothing and, as I’ve already said the markets scare the living daylights out of most investors, so where does that leave those of us that simply require a reasonable return on our investments, without risking the shirt off our back?

The funds that have shone brightly throughout the legacy of the financial crisis are those which are now commonly referred to as “non-correlated”, which simply means they are not connected to the stock markets. In real terms, this generally means investments that are in niche sectors, where the demand curve is very strong, at least in the medium term. There are a number of examples of fund managers operating in such sectors and they have shown themselves to be extremely resilient to economic turmoil.

Take the example that probably applies to large numbers of expatriates around the world. They have perhaps sold a house in their home country and purchased one abroad and, in addition, have other assets that amount to several hundred thousand pounds/ dollars.

Let’s take a test case: Mr. X has a house and 300,000 GBP in cash from savings, forgetting pensions at the moment. Applying those funds to a bank deposit, he is likely, in the current climate, to receive perhaps 1.5 to 2 percent on a fixed term of 6 to12 months, which would result in an income of between 4,500 and 6,000 GBP form his lump sum.

As an alternative, the non-correlated funds, available through major international institutions, have conservatively achieved around 5.5 to 6 percent, net of all management costs.

That same man has now increased his interest income from perhaps 6,000 GBP per annum to between 16,500 GBP to 18,000 GBP annually. For anyone looking to preserve their capital, whilst still maintaining a decent lifestyle, this is clearly significant. These non-correlated holdings look to operate on a low-risk profile generally resulting in very stable and consistent results.

Our feeling is that these particular funds have provided a real alternative for those trying to make their assets work for them, without quaking every time the financial news comes on.

In summary, individuals can look further afield than bank deposits to improve returns, for at least a part of their portfolio, without taking one giant leap into the unknown with the stock markets.

Business News Who is buying international property where?

Every overseas property professional wants to know where the real estate hotspots are around the world, so the Rightmove guide, Who’s Buying Property Where? for 2015/16 makes fascinating reading.

In addition, investor demand is rising significantly, with Rightmove seeing overseas inquiries rise by half over the last year.

Chris Please, head of Rightmove Overseas, says, “We have seen strong positive growth in the market this year, with enquiries for international properties increasing by 50 percent compared with 2014. That positive momentum is also visible in the record number of survey responses we received, with over 4,000 people taking the time to complete our questionnaire.”

The top three countries where buyers aim to purchase property in the next year are Spain, France and Italy.

The top three regions are all in Spain, with Andalucía, Murcia and Valencia leading the way, ahead of the Algarve, Portugal, and Languedoc-Roussillon, in France.

The 54-page volume 3 of Who’s Buying Property Where? features data on major overseas countries, including age group of buyers, most popular property types, the origin of buyers, top destinations, reason for purchase and average purchase prices.

For the most popular countries, more data is provided and there is a word cloud illustrating the main reasons why investors are buying.

Aimee Valaitis, Rightmove pricing and product analyst who compiled data for the report, says there are a number of reasons why inquiries have risen by half. “Firstly, the strength of the Sterling compared to the euro in recent months means that buyers can get more for their money. Secondly, the pension changes which came into effect in April allows buyers to have access to more of their pension and some are choosing to buy property

abroad. Finally, the UK election has provided more confidence for buyers.”

The report also has a section detailing buyer motivations: location ranks first at 66 percent, price 19 percent, condition of property 7 percent and agent reputation 6 percent.

Why is the agent reputation figure not higher? “A lot of buyers looking to purchase a property overseas will be doing so for the first time,” Valaitis answers. “These buyers are likely to have a property in the UK so are used to working with UK agents. Agents in the UK work on behalf of the person selling the property and not the person buying. This is very different to agents overseas who will work with both the seller and the buyer.”

She adds that the report reveals interesting trends about the role of technology in buying – 73 percent of buyers say they find property through the internet, 65 percent through overseas agents, 13 percent UK agents, 11 percent exhibitions and 9 percent print – plus the details in the word clouds. Most buyers (85 percent) use desktop computers to search, with half (49 percent) using tablets and third (32 percent) mobiles.

“We feel that there are two very surprising findings from this report,” Valaitis adds.

“Firstly, the number of buyers using mobile and tablet devices to search for property.

Buyers are becoming more tech savvy so it’s import that we also keep up with this as an industry. We need to make sure websites, enquiry forms, etc., are all mobile compatible so we can make the buying process as easy as possible.

Two-thirds of buyers purchasing in Spain are looking for holiday homes and 68 percent are cash buyers. Half of purchasers want to rent their home out when not in use.

In France, 55 percent are buying second homes with 70 percent being cash buyers and 59 percent looking to rent their homes. Sixtyone percent are looking for second homes in Italy, with 59 percent paying cash and 65 percent wanting to rent their property when it is not being used.

THAI operates to Europe as normal

Charamporn Jotikasthira, THAI president, said that the European Union’s Aviation Safety Committee meeting last month did not place carriers from Thailand on the restricted list. As such,

the airline will continue to operate regularly scheduled flights to 11 cities in nine European countries.

The airline noted that it is prepared to support and cooperate with the Civil

Aviation Administration of Thailand in the recertification of air carriers, and supporting other Thai carriers to raise safety standards in making Thailand’s aviation industry robust.

Youth Focus Teaching Mathematics through Storytelling

As Schiro (2004) suggests, stories should be delivered in a traditional storytelling manner, ‘through eye contact, personal expression, and interaction with the audience, rather than simply read out loud from the book’. Stories always spark interest, assist in memory, and reduce anxiety.

They definitely create a comfortable and supportive atmosphere in the classroom, and help to build a rapport between the teacher and her students.

Creating interest with a story is an important initial step. Describing a chain of events does engage students; create excitement, mystery or suspense, and motivate

thinking about a particular problem. Stories in which students identify with the heroes also make the lesson more relevant and more vivid.

In general, a classroom story

can serve as a purposeful break from the routine. Culturally, oral stories provided a context through which values, beliefs, and knowledge were passed on from one generation to the next.

Christmas Fun & Play at GIS Father Christmas, carols and festive food made up a bumper Christmas Fun Day at Garden International School (GIS). Students, parents and staff came to school on a Saturday for the special event.

Wearing festive reds and greens, everyone watched a Christmas-themed show that

featured songs and dances.

They then strolled around a variety of stalls that students had set up, which included 'soak the teacher' and a coconut shy. After that, the Friends of Garden and others provided some great snacks and festive food.

What is said above about the different purposes of stories is true for any subject matter, including mathematics. What is special about the use of stories in the mathematics classroom is that they can assist in understanding difficult concepts and ideas, and assist in solving problems. In mathematics, a distinguishing feature of some of the stories is that there is no traditional ‘ending’. That is why some of the stories never end; some do not adhere to the classical structure of beginning, middle, and end. The ‘end’, or conflict resolution, is often turned into student activity; the story evolves into exploration and problem solving.

Learning mathematics requires an environment that encourages children to think in mathematical terms. There are numerous situations which support counting and comparing magnitudes, grouping and classification, exploring spatial relations, and recognizing patterns and shapes.

There are a growing number of studies which provide evidence that the use of mathematics picture books in the early years of schooling can also contribute to the learning and positive attitude of mathematics. Hong (1996) found that children who learnt mathematics-related storybook reading in early years did better in number combination, classification and shape tasks. Picture books provide contexts which enable mathematical concepts, patterns, and problem solving and real-world contexts to be explored. All these will help children to see mathematics as an important part of their daily experiences and provide them with a familiar structure to explore and apply mathematical ideas. Indeed, this could encourage them

to believe in the importance of mathematics and help to build confidence in their own mathematical abilities.

These observations from a range of authors suggest that picture books are powerful tools in mathematics teaching as they present mathematical concepts in a way that is relevant and meaningful for children, which in turn makes mathematics much easier to present for teachers and to be understood by children. Other researchers offer support to the claim that story representations have a privileged status in the cognitive system. It is the classroom teacher who is charged with the task of creating the structure of learning experiences of students.

1941 Wolfman better than 2010

Special effects do not make a monster

Universal Studio’s 1941 rendition The Wolfman has rightly won a place in the hearts of all horror movie buffs. Unlike Universal’s Frankenstein and Dracula, both of which are based on nineteenth century novels, there is no literary tradition to the howling wolf monster admirably played by Lon Chaney Junior. It’s strictly Hollywood not Shakespeare.

In fact, most of the stuff commonly believed about werewolves – that they are killed only by silver bullets and change from human form only when the moon is full – derive not from any writer but from Curt Siodmak who was the movie’s Hollywood scriptwriter.

In later life, Curt often used to joke about how he had created so many widely believed myths. “Even a man who is pure of heart, and says his prayers at night, may become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the autumn moon is bright.”

Notionally set around the second world war in Wales at the fictitious Talbot Castle, although nobody speaks with a Welsh accent, The Wolfman tells the story of Larry Talbot (Chaney) who returns home

from America to claim his inheritance from his father Sir John (Claude Rains). Sir John’s wife is never mentioned but she must have been something of a battleaxe to create the burly Larry in view of Sir John’s genteel and petit stature.

The movie gets up on its feet, so to speak, after Larry visits a fairground and gets bitten by a wolf, none other than Bela Lugosi on four legs.

In fact, there’s remarkably little horror in the movie – Larry in animal form kills only one guy a gravedigger – but there’s a great sense of atmosphere, convincing makeup by Jack Pierce with his revolutionary yak hair and spirit gum, and a riveting musical score which was to be imitated many times in Universal’s later movies.

There’s a convincing performance by Maria Ouspenskaya as the old gypsy who understands all about lycanthropy and tries to bring comfort to the stricken Larry.

It’s surprising though that the 1941 version of The Wolfman never actually shows a full moon – the prerequisite in any other werewolf movie for the transformation scenes. Asked

about this omission, Curt Siodmak confessed that so many of his myths had been included in the film that he forgot about this particular one.

At the end of the movie, Lawrence Talbot dies but always remember you can’t keep a good monster down.

Larry survived to appear in four more films as a wolf and finally got to be a hero in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, saving Lou from a fate worse than death. Well sort of. But it was Lon Chaney Junior who defined in cinema terms what makes werewolves tick until the dreaded remake came out in 2010.

Director Joe Johnson had a much bigger budget in 2010 and all the advantages of computerized imagery, but his The Wolfman is inferior in almost any respect. This time the story is set in 1891 rather than c.1940 and Lawrence (Benicio del Toro) again returns home to meet Sir John his dad (played by Anthony Hopkins).

The main difference in the new version is that Sir John is a werewolf too and has a fight to the death with his son, both in what look like bear skins, at

the climax of the movie. You could never imagine Claude Rains, the 1940 Sir John, trying to murder his own son.

Yet the 2010 version isn’t a patch on the 1941 one. Johnson hasn’t really got much of a clue how to make things frightening. Yes, of course, you see people being torn to bits and heads smitten clean off, but it becomes a bit of a bore after a while. The director seems to sense this and tries to insert a number of scary moments to keep your attention from wandering – a mad child, torture in a mental home, an Indian cook hung upside down.

Lamentably, there’s no pace to the movie. Sir John wanders round his lugubrious castle rather like a lost sheep wondering what to do next.

Lawrence, who was a Shakespearian actor before taking up lycanthropy, seems to have an American accent which Benicio del Toro spends most of the movie trying to hide.

In effect, the viewer spends most of his time glancing at his watch and waiting for the next massacre scene.

man is fast moving and full of characterization. Much is made in several scenes of the silver headed cane and its allied symbolism associated with death. But the 2010 rendition scarcely mentions the cane. Apparently, 17 minutes with Max von Sydow dealing with the importance of silver in werewolf legends was cut out prior to release. The director has promised to include the lost scenes in a later director’s cut edition of the DVD, but there’s no sign of that at the moment.

Between 1941 and 2010 there were at least seventeen Hollywood movies which included some reference to wolves and transformation.

But only the 2010 version is an actual remake, howbeit with only passing mention of the context of the earlier world war two film. If this is the best that contemporary directors can do, let’s hope they don’t start remaking Frankenstein and Dracula. Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi must be turning in their graves at the very prospect.

Round 9 of the GP3 Series at the modern Yas Marina circuit, famous for its unique architectural design incorporating a luxury hotel situated on the actual circuit, saw Sandy Stuvik racing for Singha Corporation, The Pizza Company, Dacon Inspection Services, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand, and the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Qualifying Sandy – 20th 1:56.936 Ocon – 1st 1:55.491 The GP3 qualifying session got underway in a much hotter Yas Marina circuit. The GP3 Series had opted for a medium compound tyre, meaning that there would be little tyre degradation this weekend. “Qualifying was not how we expected it to go,” said Sandy. "I couldn't get any heat into the front tyres to make them work properly. By the time the front tyres finally came up to temperature the rear tyres were too worn to set a good lap. We have to investigate why this happened as we were looking good on the first set.”

Race 1 Sandy – 17th Kirchhofer – 1st The first race of the weekend for the GP3 Series took place midday on Saturday. The drivers would battle for 18 laps. Sandy noted, “There was very little tyre degradation due to the compound selected by Pirelli which is a shame because saving tyres for the end has been a strong point for me this season. I had a good start but after a few laps I had to battle with a lot of understeer caused by our setup. For tomorrow we've made some big changes and hopefully we can keep a decent pace.”

Race 2 Sandy – 16th Palou – 1st The second and final race of the weekend took place once again at midday, meaning the changes made to the car from yesterday’s race should have a direct effect on the car’s performance in this 14-lap race. “The race was quite processional for me,” Sandy lamented. "I got a decent start but couldn't really make up any ground. There was some battling going on but I felt I didn't really have the pace to be able to fight for a top 10 position unfortunately. The car’s performance was better but there are still some key issues that we have not been able to address this season. Nevertheless, I've learnt a lot about many things this season and will take it with me as experience for the future.”

It has been one of the toughest seasons for Sandy Stuvik, but he is now looking forward to the challenge of 2016; we must wait and see what next year brings and Sandy will surely be fighting hard to bring the Thai flag back to the top step of the podium!

Once again we combined with Colin’s Golf Bar for the outing to Mountain Shadow which resulted in a very healthy field of 30 golfers ready to accept the challenge. Departing the Phantom Bar right on time at 8:30 am we arrived at the golf course 43 minutes later to find it quite busy with other societies also booked in, however, we were able to get our first group away 20 minutes ahead of schedule at 9:40 am. The weather was terrific, although hot, and the course in very good shape. We proceeded at a good pace until we caught up with a slow Japanese two-ball, but they soon sped up after we pointed out their slow play. We managed to complete a very enjoyable round in four hours and five minutes.

We had two flights with A flight being for handicaps 0 to 16 and B flight for golfers with handicaps of 17 and over and four places in each flight. We also had four nearest the pins on the par threes and longest first putts on hole numbers 9 and 18.

It was tight at the top of A flight with two golfers having 36 points and the resultant countback saw Ed Wyckoff (18-point back nine) declared the winner and your writer Peter “Blacky” Blackburn (17-point back nine) in second spot.

Another countback was needed to determine third and fourth places with two players on 35 points, and that gave Paul Blackshaw (22-point back nine) third place over Robbie Taylor (17-point back nine) in fourth spot. The B flight was well won by Larry Gibb who finished with 36 points. There were three golfers

The result saw Colin “Donkey” Davis (20-point back nine) finish second and Peter Gangur (18-point back nine and 12 points on the last six holes) in third place with Pete Shaw (18-point back nine and 11 points on the last six holes) finishing fourth.

In a week when His Majesty the King and Lindsay Slender shared birthdays, another fine field of 35 headed to Greenwwood, where we were greeted with a pleasant surprise. This fine course has followed the lead of Treasure Hill and reduced the rates (green fee, caddy and cart = 1,150 baht). Well done, Greenwood!

Warm welcomes were granted to Paul Hack, Mike Cattillon and Bernie McCart. On the way, all things frivolous were discussed until Kissy Buchanan enlightened us when he mentioned that he asked a bank teller “What guarantees may a Thai bank require”? The reply, “If buying a house we insist you are well endowed”.

We played A and C nines, yellow tees, with countbacks required on C. The greens were true and the many deep fairway bunkers continue to make this course pleasurable, though very

challenging.

Geri Crilly, Frank Rileyand birthday boy Lindsay swooped their way around the course with gay abandon, however, it was Max Bracegirdle who was all smiles and turned around his recent bad form.

Ebrahim and the endowed Kissy were the only others to break their handicaps.

Porawan Larbtawee with Steven Virata (PHI), Foreign Judge Event No. 3 The recently concluded 2015 FEI World Jumping Challenge Event No. 2 and the Final Event No. 3, with Category A (120-130 cm) and C (100-110 cm), was held at Horseshoe Point Pattaya last November 27-29 and December 4-6 respectively.

This is the 37th year that the challenge has been held worldwide, and was created to allow less experienced riders to compete in an international level without leaving their respective countries. The FEI World Jumping Challenge made a big contribution to develop jumping, an equestrian discipline in the Olympics and the most popular of the equestrian sport worldwide. Up to today,

riders who participated in the challenge are showing success in competing in the elite level all over the world. These are the last two events organized in Thailand based on a new three-event format that was introduced this year, instead of only one.

The course plans for all the events were designed

by Guilherme Jorge (BRA) who will also be the course designer in the Rio Olympics 2016. The foreign judge and president of the Ground Jury for Category A for Event No. 2 was N.Y. Ho (SIN) and for Event No. 3 was Steven Virata (PHI). The Ground juries were President Category C – Phutthihat Sethchaivut (THA) and Member – Zherwin M.

You & Your Pets Control the mold Garbage and outdoor trash are more than just unsightly—they can also pose a major threat to our fourlegged friends.

Veterinarians throughout Thailand handle thousands of cases of animal poisoning resulting from plants, pills and other ingested items every year. But not all pet poisons are so apparent—in fact, one major risk may be lurking where you least expect it: On food.

To arm you with potentially life-saving information, be aware of the dangers of moldy food. Food mold, also known as Penicillium spp, is a fungus that grows on aging food. It is often visible to the naked

eye and, if ingested, can make animals sick.

While mold on dog food and cat food should certainly be avoided, the real danger occurs when pets get into household trash or eat garbage outside, including compost piles and moldy nuts or fruits that have fallen from trees.

Fungal neurotoxins on old food can make your four-legged friend ill. Deadly ill. Common signs that your pet has eaten mold include: • Vomiting • Diarrhea • Muscle tremors • Seizures • Elevated body temperature

Cats for You in Pattaya Symptoms can last 24-48 hours, and can be life-threatening if left untreated. Available treatments are primarily focused on controlling the tremors and keeping the pet cool and hydrated, however, the best way to protect your pets is to not let them eat moldy food at all. Keep an eye on your pets at all times, especially when outside, and avoid leaving them outdoors unattended.

If you see your pet eating moldy food, contact your vet to learn the correct action to take. Onset of signs can be very rapid, so if your dog or cat shows symptoms, take him to a veterinary clinic immediately.

This friendly fellow was born disabled but, despite having to wear a nappy, he can scoot around like a Formula One driver.

Oreo has to have his nappy changed four times a day but other than this he has no other special needs.

They are both very friendly and playful cats that are neutered and vaccinated – ready to go to a loving new home.

This lovely kitten is one of three lovely sisters, one has already gone to a new home and now we hope someone out there will choose her or her sister soon. They are typical kittens and run and play around the house like crazy things.

The calming blink works on house cats, feral cats, and even tigers in the wild, according to behaviorists.
