everal embassies, notably from Western Europe, are alerting their nationals to the dangers of visiting or residing in Thailand without adequate health cover. The warnings follow a number of cases in which foreigners needed expensive operations or emergency medical treatment and lacked the finances to fund their personal healthcare. No embassies are willing to finance medical treatment in Thailand and must be paid for in all Thai hospitals in both the public and the private sector. This throws the responsibility back on the foreigner or any personal friends willing to help. In recent years, the costs of premier inpatient care in Thailand have risen substantially and now equate with the charges in European hospitals. For example, open-heart surgery can cost millions of baht, especially if a stay is required in an intensive care unit. It is unlikely that a foreigner requiring urgent medical care would receive ongoing treatment without an agreeable insurer or a solid guarantee of payment. Charges tend to be highest at the beginning of treatment since diagnostic tests are necessary before an operation can commence. Michael Fairclough, an international consultant who has investigated the problem, said, “Treatment in the best Thai hospitals is now stateof-the-art but many foreign visitors fail to recognize

just what a problem there will be if they experience a medical emergency such as a traffic accident or a sudden heart attack.” He estimated that only about half of all foreigners in Thailand at any one time carried proper insurance. He added that special packages introduced last year during martial law had not been well-advertized and, in any case, did not cover pre-existing conditions or expats. British national Darren Vogan, 33, was a typical case having been stranded in Thailand after a serious road accident. He has spoken of his ordeal and warned other travellers to be careful when taking out insurance. He broke both of his legs when a truck smashed into his moped in the Pattaya area. But he was unable to return

to UK for eight weeks because of his injuries and was left with a 25,000 pounds (1.2 million baht) bill for medical and travel costs after he was told that his insurance had expired. He eventually managed to return to UK but faced substantial new surgery. Darren’s mother, Collette, said, “We tried everything including the British embassy, but all they could do was to provide a translator.” A separate problem awaits expats who retire to Thailand in their 50s and 60s. Michael Fairclough explained, “When they arrive these guys are often healthy, but the ageing process inevitably brings health problems. The best thing to do is to insure immediately on arrival, if not before, as uninsured pensioners will find it virtually impossible to find any sort of cover.”

But he added that they must pay the annual premiums without exception and be prepared for annual increases of 10 percent or even more. Comprehensive insurance for men in their 70s may cost around 400,000-plus baht a year and even that assumes a creditable track record with the company. Some, but not all insurance companies, may even bar members who have reached 70 years or may raise the annual premiums to an intolerable level. Many expats believe, if they have a medical problem, that they can return to their first country for free treatment. But Mr Fairclough urges caution. “Some countries, such as UK, now make it very difficult for returning expats to enjoy Continued on page 4

News Wooded area searched for drugs

of serious criminal interest. However, two people approached by the police were found to test positive in their urine and were escorted to Banglamung police station.

Karaoke raided Walking Street by police targeted again

Nangfah Karaoke in Central Pattaya was the latest venue targeted by the local authority in the ceaseless war against underage drinking and prostitution. A 16-year-old girl suspected of offering sex and was given 1,000 baht by a police spy before being escorted to the police station. A woman accused of running the establishment was charged according to law.

Police visited the Beach Club and the Endorphin on Walking Street and found a number of foreign workers, including two from Pakistan, two from Myanmar and one from each of the Philippines, Iran and Syria. The owners face prosecution in a renewed crackdown ordered by the National Council for Peace and Order.

Mystery attack on tourist

A customer at the Music Lover Bar in Central Pattaya was bloodied in an attack but chose to walk away from the scene unaided. Mohammed Bushra Ahmed Al Ryah, 60, from Sudan, had several head wounds. Police noticed pieces of broken bottles on the floor of the nearby Capital Bar. Bar staff refused to say anything, which led officers to think an influential person might have been involved. But the tourist said he did not wish any hospital treatment and walked into the night.

Russians arrested for illegal working Thirty Russian nationals were arrested in police raids on Walking Street where foreigners were working without the appropriate permit. Many of the women were go-go dancers and the men mostly bouncers and barmen. Police said the arrested individuals were invited to show their work permits but none were forthcoming. The owners of the nightclubs will be prosecuted and the illegal workers are expected to be back in Russia soon.

National Health treatment and there is the additional problem that many illnesses may mean the foreigner is too ill to board an aircraft.” He added that Thai immigration regulations make it easy for foreigners over 50 to apply for one-year visas. “All people need is an income or a Thai bank balance of 800,000 baht, but that sum could turn out to be chickenfeed if a health disaster suddenly descends.” The British embassy website urges British visitors, long or short term, to ensure they have comprehensive medical cover which includes repatriation, if necessary, and provides a 24hour helpline. The site also makes clear that the embassy cannot pay any bills or fund any travel. Mr Fairclough concluded, “If you are in dire straits, a Thai public-sector hospital may admit you but it is very unlikely any treatment other than palliative care will be provided unless and until substantial cash arrives.”

Tourists visiting Thailand are to refrain from smoking in prohibited public areas by Tourism Authority of Thailand, www.TATnews.org

Thailand is campaigning for the general public and tourists to refrain from smoking in prohibited public areas, as part of its Tobacco Control Law, which aims to promote a safe, clean and smoke-free environment. Under the campaign, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports is working closely with tour companies and guides asking tourists to refrain from smoking in prohibited areas, especially at sports complexes and tourist attractions nationwide.

Siam Music Renting booths Yamaha presents can be a pain big band concert Outdoor places where smoking is prohibited include facilities for exercise, sports training, sports playing, and sports competitions of every kind, public parks, zoological parks, amusement parks, children’s playgrounds, and markets. Tourists travelling with guided tour groups must comply. Thailand became a party to the World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in 2005. Since then, the country has banned smoking in almost all indoor public places, indoor workplaces, and public transport. International airports may have designated smoking areas, hotels may permit smoking in guest rooms, and non-air conditioned facilities serving food and/or drinks must be smoke-free where food and/ or drinks are served. A concert dubbed “Picnic Music with Mahidol University Jazz Orchestra” will be presented by Siam Music Yamaha on Sunday, January 24, 2016, from 4 to 6 pm at Dr. Thaworn Phornprapha Hall of Fame, Siam Country Club Pattaya Old Course. In line with the 50th anniversary of Yamaha Music School, the concert will feature big band jazz performances with more than 30 instruments by members of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra and graduates of Mahidol University College of Music. Cheque bouncer arrested

A Turkish expat who made a living selling luxury cars in Pattaya has been arrested and accused of fraud for a bounced cheque. Targun Alev Yildir, 46, has a Thai wife and has been resident in Thailand since 2009. The businessman was arrested when he asked for a visa extension.

A barbeque seller has complained to police after she rented a booth at Bali Hai pier over the New Year holiday. She told officers that she had paid a hefty deposit for the booth but was then told by the contractor that she had to move to the clothing area where shirts and pants were for sale. Jenjira Konghom, 23, objected as it is not easy to sell fried meat in the same area as the clothing booths. But the contractor said he would not return the deposit of 6,000 baht and should find another renter. The matter was awaiting resolution at press time.

Chinaman arrested with gun

A drunk tourist was caught by police after trying to hail a motorbike taxi but then collapsing in the road. Police found on his person a handgun and nine bullets for which he did not have a permit. The Chinese tourist, Wenliang Niu, 31, said it was not his gun but that he had picked it up from an open drawer in a money exchange shop. The gun looked like a police weapon, although no officer has yet reported a loss such as this.

Rescuers save lucky drunk

A farang staggered from a bar into the sea and began swimming away from Pattaya Beach. Onlookers noticed that he clearly was drunk, prompting rescuers to jump in after him. Eventually the man was brought ashore where he continued shouting and eventually walked away. Witnesses reported that he had been drinking in a bar and walked away from his bar bill and to the beach. Police said a third party had paid the bill so there was no need of follow-up action.

Brit corpse found floating Pattaya police were notified of a dead body floating face down in the sea about 1 kilometer off Pattaya Beach. Officers quickly made their way to the scene with Sawangboriboon Rescue Team and identified the man as Jeffrey Carl Hewitt, 50, from United Kingdom. There were no injuries to the body. The corpse was sent for autopsy.

News 150 undergo lifeguard training

Turkeys galore The much-publicized ban on the import of turkeys for the recently-departed festive season does not seem to have prevented hundreds of local restaurants providing the traditional Christmas dinner with barely an untaken seat. Makes you wonder. Water not galore Pattaya’s water authorities are again sounding the alarm bells about a water shortage later in the year. One plan is to lay 90-centimetre-wide pipes to bring the raw liquid from the Nong Pla Lai reservoir. This must be the umpteenth time we heard this proposal but work begins next month. Maybe. The Marine Department and the Ministry of Transport organized lifeguard training for 150 participants in the Pattaya area. The purpose of this training was to cooperate and coordinate between marine networks to prevent accidents caused by boats, to take care of water traffic, to give notification about water pollution and other relevant laws in Thailand.

Pattaya Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh, Banglamung District Chief Chakorn Kanjanawatta and Pimook Prayoonprom, director of the Office of Marine Department of Banglamung District, were guests of honor for the opening ceremony at Parkview Conference Hall, Siam Bayshore Pattaya.

Meds visit patient at home

Sharing Walking Street Walking Street, long the preserve of the tourist police as far as law and order are concerned, now has a Soi 9 city police permanent presence in a mini-station near the Nang Nual seafood restaurant. Both groups make use of foreign police volunteers but you won’t be confused as their uniforms are not identical. Low-profile ASEAN The formal launch of the ASEAN Economic Community at the beginning of this month – the free trade area of 10 regional countries – got off to an unheralded start at any rate in Pattaya. An informal poll of foreign tourists in Pattaya revealed that next to nobody had ever heard of it. Fly direct to Macau You can now avoid Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang if you fancy a side trip to the Chinese island of Macau. Air Asia can take you direct from U-Tapao airport, about 44 km from Pattaya. Air Asia from U-Tapao has also recently opened new routes to Chiang Mai, Udon Thani and Singapore.

A team of doctors and nurses from Pattaya City Hospital visited patient Boonsueb Sornjaeng, 65, at his

home in Nongprue. He had a stroke after a road accident last year. Doctors counseled his wife on proper care.

New orphanage opens

So many Indians Every time you pass through town, it seems that another Indian restaurant has opened. There are now no fewer than 14 on Second Road from South to North Pattaya. They include no fewer than three dedicated vegetarian restaurants. Views differ on whether their main market is Indian or farang. Health alert Hospital authorities say that the current high season has been accompanied by a lot of pneumonia and TB cases. If you have a persistent cough for no apparent reason, better to have an x-ray at your favourite medical centre. You can be suffering from these diseases without even realizing it. Reason for lease The Immigration Bureau has clarified why foreigners applying for one-year visas must show proof of their local address by showing a house book, Chanoot or current lease. It all stems from the Bangkok bombings last year and the need to verify the addresses of longstay aliens in the kingdom. Now you know. Fewer DVD outlets A reader complains that Pattaya now has so few DVD outlets. Actually it’s a worldwide phenomenon as the public is now downloading movies on their computers thanks to the wonders of new technology. However, there are still several good DVD outlets on the fourth floor of Tukcom on South Pattaya Road. Jomtien Sauna If you enjoy a spa, beauty and personal care, then try the Jomtien Sauna out there at 386/125 Wat Boonkanjana. There’s a large swimming pool, a cryotherapy pool, a Finnish sauna, a steam room and massage too. Good value for money.

Banglamung District Chief Chakorn Kanjanawatta presided over the opening of the new home of Ban Jing Jai Foundation in the presence of the Norwegian ambassador, civil officials and members of the Red Cross and YWCA.

The Foundation established an orphanage in Nong Plalai district on 3.5 rai of land. There is accommodation for 100 needy youngsters as well as guest rooms, kitchens, nursing services and leisure facilities.

It seems a long time since the coup of May 2014 but the term of office of the junta is only about halfway through if the road map to hold elections in mid 2017 is maintained. It is likely that 2016 will be a more problematical year than 2015 on the political and constitutional front. The Constitutional Drafting Committee is set to publish the first draft of the proposed constitution later this month, with the final version launched in March or April. Plans for a public referendum will then be cranked up with the actual vote scheduled to occur sometime before the end of the summer. There are likely to be a number of controversial issues in the new constitution. The first will be that a non-MP could be voted into office as prime minister by a parliamentary vote. Critics say that this provision is ironic: the charter drafters are likely to impose tough conditions on people aspiring to become MPs, but then make a loophole to have a prime minister who has not undergone the scrutiny. Another difficulty could be that the proposed constitution is likely to empower representatives from 20 professional groups to nominate their own Senate (Upper House) members. Such members would not be elected and would be open to the suspicion that they had been put in place by powerful special interest groups. Yet another area of controversy is the idea to move the power to impeach the House speaker or the prime minister from the Senate to the Constitutional Court. Critics see this as a way of empowering yet another non-elected body to take crucial decisions. Problems are looming also on the economic front. The Thai economy has not yet bounced back, as promised, and many ASEAN countries will enter the ASEAN Economic Community, already formally introduced in the 10-member block, better prepared than will Thailand. Yet other difficulties in the year ahead are the trial of Yingluck Shinawatra for alleged corruption and the dilemmas created by doubts about airline safety, the shrimp industry and human trafficking. The basic position of the junta is that the suspension of democracy (a general election) is necessary whilst the country is reformed. There is still a lot of sympathy for that view. Many Thais still recall the street riots, murders and instability which accompanied the final months prior to the May 2014 coup d’etat, which in its turn brought peace and order for the most part. But history suggests that the public won’t wait forever. The current prime minister could be caught by two opposing perspectives and power groupings – those who don’t want the return of the Shinawatras under any circumstances and those who are becoming increasingly impatient about the absence of a general election. The prime minister, of course, is well aware of these dilemmas. He knows that the “reform before election” benefits his political status but also realizes that anti-coup elements are becoming more outspoken. Much will depend on whether the junta can show clear progress during the first half of 2016. If the economy does indeed rebound and if the government can weather the publication of the next proposed constitution, then the military-installed government will be on track to survive peacefully until mid-2017 and the general election. But if there is no progress worth speaking of, then the clouds will gather and the junta will be forced to switch into full-scale, personalprotection mode. That would not augur well for the future. When the history books are written, it may be that the coup of May 2014 will be viewed as justifiable because of the chaos – even the threat of civil war – that the country was facing. But people tend to have short memories. What matters now is the future. The government has the difficult task of steering the country through a number of rocks and hard places. It is to be hoped that Thailand emerges well from these dilemmas and that she does not return to the pre-coup days of mayhem. We should remember that as recently as 2010, to quote a newspaper headline of the times, “Bangkok is burning”. Those were indeed shocking days.

Thai Air Asia inaugurated its new route from U-Tapao International Airport to Nanning, China with 30 media guests and travel agents for a seven-day familiarization trip. The airline and the Nanning Tourism Administration organized the event, which included visits to sites in Nanning and Guilin, to promote travel on the route. The flight departed U-Tapao, about 45-minutes south of Pattaya, and arrived in Nanning Wuxu International Airport two-hours and 15 minutes later. Nanning, capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, is the political, economic and cultural center of the region. Located near the border of Vietnam, the city neighbors Guangzhou and is close to Hong Kong and Macau, making the city a commercial and communication center, opening China to Southeast Asia. Nanning has the most prosperous economy in Southwest China, supplying an abundance of agricultural products to the entire region. It is now becoming a special economic city like Shanghai, developing future growth in industry and commerce. Nanning recently hosted an international conference of ASEAN countries, promoting the city as a potential hub of China for trading, investment, education, culture and sports. Accommodation and shopping in Nanning are diverse and well developed for visitors. Hotels and hostels of different standards can meet various needs. In the city's commercial center, supermarkets, department stores, specialty commodity streets, bookstores and other retail markets offer a variety of merchandise. When night falls, colorful street lamps light the city, encouraging locals to become active, visit nightclubs, gyms, bars, and coffee houses. People of all ages can be seen walking or relaxing in the city's many squares and along the river. The Fam-Trip group visited tourist

sites including Tongling Grand Canyon and Detian Waterfalls—highlight of the trip. Known as the mini Niagara Falls, Detian Waterfalls is the second largest cross-border waterfall in the world after Niagara and is one of the biggest in Asia—measuring 120 metres wide and 70 metres high. The sound of the water hitting the cliffs resonates clear—near and afar. At its base are several rafts that take visitors close up. Several films have used the waterfalls for location shots. Other popular spots are the beautiful Mt. Qingxiu and Mt. Daming, Yangmei Ancient Town, Huashan Mural as well as greenery parks and gardens. A variety of local food--from porridges to rice noodles are features, as well as Suanye (fermented fruits and vegetables), a must-try dish native to Nanning. The 30 visitors also went to the Daxing Countryside and the Black Zhuang ethnic group, then via high-speed train traveled Yangshuo,

southeast of Guilin, Guangxi. Yangshuo is said to be the most beautiful city in China. It certainly is pollution free, featuring clean air and little noise. It’s a paradise on earth for tourists, especially when traveling to Yangshuo by boat or when taking a bamboo raft along the Li River surrounded by mountains on both sides. Most Yangshuo residents work in the tourist industry which itself is sustained by appealing karst peaks, rivers, caves, and temples as well as its casual cafes and bars. It also has a relatively big expat community. Several hotels and hostels have been developed to Chinese standards. The travel agents and journalists also went to the tourist center, West Street, which is a good spot to buy souvenirs. In the evening, they visited what is billed as the biggest natural theatre in the world (capacity of 2,000 seats) and saw the “Impression of Liu Sanjie”. The 70-minute river show from the music of the movie of the same name, was produced by the person who did the Beijing Olympic games opening ceremony. The show featured a cast of 600 plus wearing traditional Zhuang, Miao and Yao dress, and a highly impressive light show. After that, the group visited the Reed Flute Cave and the Elephant Trunk Hill. Returning to Nanning on the last day, the 30 travelers visited the Guangxi Provincial Museum before flying back to U-Tapao. Air Asia flies from U-Tapao to Nanning three days per week. Executive Room

>> from L1 design, modern accessories and the centerpiece, a comfortable king-sized bed with luxurious high thread count bed sheets and fluffy pillows. For infotainment there's free high-speed Wi-Fi and 40-inch flat-screen TV. A compartmentalized glass-walled bathroom with perfectly adjusted water temperature for showers. No extra fiddling needed! Chapeau to the engineering department. This guest room is a cool, welcome tranquil retreat after climbing up and down (no shoes) all those marble slabs of the 2,600-year-old Buddhist Shwedagon Pagoda in the high noon sweltering heat. Late afternoon. Time for a dip and a couple of lazy laps in the unheated swimming pool sitting on the rooftop beside the tennis court and fitness center. Excellent. However, we decide for a dry martini and pint of cold Myanmar lager at the pool bar while watching the balmy Yangon sunset with Shwedagon Pagoda. Now, shining like an immense golden beacon in the horizon. Le Cellier Wine Bar & Restaurant on the 14th floor. Modern fine dining with chic decor. Off-white elegant, comfy chairs and sofas contrasting the teakwood parquet floor. In the ceiling chandeliers, of course. Gourmands, gourmets and wine aficionados will absolutely get their money’s worth including the vista through the tall panorama windows overlooking Yangon skyline. For the wine lovers a walk-in wine cellar stocked to the rafters. Around 600 bottles of Grand Cru Bordeaux, Bourgogne labels, Rieslings, Chablis, Champagne in magnum bottles, big Italian Barolos and less expensive New World offerings including a Myanmar Pinot Noir: Red Mountain Estate from the southern Shan state. Our choice and our first Burmese wine, the “Pii-noh”, a perfect accompaniment to the pan-seared Le Cellier Wine Bar & Restaurant

foie gras with mango chutney as a starter. All finger-lickin' good. Novotel Yangon Max also boasts of a quintessential Chinese restaurant, the Royal Pavilion, on the ground floor. A high-ceilinged dining room, circular Chinese bamboo design elements and bright red tablecloths. And of course, three private rooms. The cuisine is traditional Chinese with Cantonese influences. For all-day dining The Square on the fourth floor offers delectable international and local fare. From The Square the elevator takes you down to the amazing supersized banquet and conference space: Yangon Ballroom catering up to 750 guests, and the Pyay Conference Room: 280 people capacity. Later that evening a famous local jewelry company held an impressive anniversary bash. Red carpet, Yangon high-society en masse, traditional silk longyis, evening gowns, real bling-bling and a Rolls-Royce Ghost in midnight sapphire paint job with suicide doors at the ballroom entrance. Following day. A sumptuous breakfast buffet at The Square restaurant. What a petit dejeuner, plentiful melange of eastern and western cuisine. Variety of freshly baked croissants, baguettes, aromatic French cheeses, juicy olives, all washed down with gallons of premium coffee. On the Asian counter the famous Myanmar mohinga broth. Thailand has tom yam kung, in Myanmar there is mohinga, the unofficial national dish Manida Spa

of Myanmar. A hearty breakfast fish soup thickened with rice containing a combination of shallots, the crunchy edible core of the banana tree and chopped coriander garnished with toasted sesame and garlic oil. When in Myammar – do try mohinga. Our sojourn comes to an end but the old British colonial, Rangoon with its decaying, dusty, towering redbrick imperial edifices still remain while the new Yangon city is in C galloping development mode. Tuna and Salmon Sashimi

THE FRENCH GARDEN

A Culinary Oasis in the heart of Jomtien The very latest restaurant to hit the culinary scene is situated in an oasis of pastoral peace but is only a stone’s throw from the bustle of Thappraya Road. Formerly known as Le Saint Regis at the top of Soi Jomtien Nivate, the property has been elegantly renovated, expanded and refurbished under the watchful eyes of the new French owners Rita and Christian. The swimming pool glistens in the heart of the garden and is surrounded by masses of al fresco dining options including a private sala, undercover terraces, a very elegant salon and a smart air-conditioned zone. Chef Christian has an impressive gastro-pedigree having worked throughout France and owned restaurants in Nice and Alsace-Lorraine. His wife Rita is the charismatic front of house director who meets and greets with such Gallic charm that a warm welcome to this garden haven is always assured. Although only open for just a month, word is out and it has been discovered by Pattaya/Jomtien’s

gastronauts. The definitive a la carte menu is under creation but in the meantime a concise opening carte is more than adequate. Our evening was launched with a substantial glass of Kir and our chosen entrees were sautéed prawns with chopped parsley and a platter of sashimi of tuna and salmon. Now hold on to your chapeaux – the price of all the appetizers is only B.180 with big portions for big appetites. A veritable ocean of fresh, not frozen prawns sautéed with garlic and parsley were delightful and the polar bright tuna and salmon so soft and tender it fairly melted in the mouth. Other appetizers include the classic house country-style terrine, mimosa eggs, fresh stuffed tomatoes with tuna, a vegetable tart “fait maison” and the ever popular, impeccably sourced Italian charcuterie selection. Three salads (B.220) including seafood, Caesar or Italian are also a popular choice. The Angus steak at B.450 is a constant bestseller but also the

Red Tuna Steak

Les patrons Rita and Christian

similarly priced homemade chicken cordon bleu and the cotelette de porc (B.280) both offer a taste of Christian’s adept hand both with the preparation and cooking of the meat but also the perfect vegetables, salad and faultless dressing. Two fish options at the moment, fresh salmon fillet with dill and a red tuna steak. Mick however, opted for the filet mignon pork tenderloin with French fries and I couldn’t resist the succulence of the superb tuna. A garden of fresh vegetables accompanied both dishes together with potatoes of your choice and

salad. Please come hungry and do justice to the overgenerous quantity of this delicious food that covers the huge plates, we failed to finish but Rita offered to package it for us to take away. Wine also is agreeably well priced with a glass of French house wine coming in at only B.100 or a 50 cl carafe of “Corte Antica” at B.280. Various bottles are also available. Specials include half a roast chicken, salad and French fries for B.200, or a set menu at B.390 which features stuffed tomatoes with tuna, mixed brochette with salad and French fries followed by a tarte maison or ice cream and a glass of house wine. Do not leave without trying one of Christian’s indulgent desserts; profiteroles with ice cream, a house special banana cake and that queen of chocolate confection a dark chocolate fondant cake with its fabulous molten interior.

The French Garden has a very welcoming bar and lounge on entry fully stocked for any occasion offering complimentary canapés while you chat with friends or peruse the menu for subsequent dining. Soft jazz fills the air increasing the ambience of wellbeing and relaxation. Do visit and discover for yourself what this culinary sanctuary has to offer, the food is top-notch with more than reasonable prices and the environment a delightful garden of peace and tranquility – what more could we ask? Parties welcome and two wellappointed rooms are also available. THE PIG & WHISTLE JOMTIEN

As British as Bacon Butties… The British have been responsible for many inventions over the centuries but probably the most imitated worldwide is the good old pub. There’s hardly a country in the world that doesn’t boast an Olde English (or Scottish, Welsh or Irish) pub of some description. Their names have interesting origins, largely in the beginning from the masons and craftsmen involved in church building like The Masons Arms and The Carpenters. However, Pig and Whistle is different as it is said to derive from two words “Piggin” and “Wassail”. A piggin is a vessel (such as a jug) used to carry ale and wassail means a toast as in “Good Health”. We have two pubs with that name here, one The famous Pig and Whistle, restaurant (and inn) on Soi 7, Pattaya which has been a constant here for almost 20 years through its many renovations and expansions. It is as English as Big Ben and beans on toast and its perennial popularity is attributed to its friendly atmosphere and hearty servings of traditional pub grub at reasonable prices. The other is its sibling in Jomtien on Thappraya Road just as it turns down to Beach Road. From 8:30 am to midnight this kitchen is in full flight providing the class of dishes that has made the Pig and Whistle famous. Inside the establishment, the décor is a

modern, loungy sports bar with three big screens showing the matches of the day, a big comfy bar and banquette seating for friendly get-togethers and sociable events. Local and imported bottled and draft beers are on tap together with a reasonable selection of wines at wallet friendly prices. The English breakfast menus are legendary and many a trencherman has been defeated by The Pig’s “full Monty” of two eggs, two English sausages, two rashers of Wiltshire bacon, baked beans, grilled mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, fried potatoes, fried bread plus toast and marmalade at only B.190. Breakfast meatheads would be well and truly satisfied with the No. 1. Special set: fillet steak (100 grams), two eggs any style, bubble and squeak and mushrooms for B.195. Even those folk who enjoy a kipper for breakfast are kept happy with the No. 2 Special set: kipper, scrambled eggs, bacon and toast for B.195. All the breakfast items, including the bubble and squeak and black pudding can be ordered singly or with any item of your choice. Mick and I visited the other evening to sample the English victuals and were very impressed with the hearty and the homely “just as mum used to cook” quality of all this pub fayre. Come hungry though, the portions are huge and the staff (especially chef)

disappointed if your plate isn’t licked clean before its return to the kitchen. After much deliberating (it all reads so well), we chose to kick off the proceedings with a portion of their signature chicken liver pate (B.120). Deeply rich in flavour and served with dark brown bread toast and garnish, it was top-drawer and considering the size of the portion would make for a very good lunch or afternoon snack. Other starters include the perennially popular Norwegian prawn cocktail, spring rolls or one of their homemade soups with the pea and ham variety coming highly recommended. We should mention the sandwiches now before we move on to the main courses. These are wonderful “doorstop” affairs: huge slices of thickly sliced white bread generously packed with the filling of your choice, i.e. hot chicken, roast beef, bacon and egg, sausage and egg and even pork and apple with prices from around B.75. Half-time by now and Mick and I were wondering where to take our taste buds for a nostalgic trip back to the times when the term “gastro-pub” had never been coined. We chose a traditional Wiltshire gammon steak served with an egg, fresh pineapple, garden peas and chips and the house bangers and mash. Three UK recipe fat chubby sausages were served

with caramelised onions, peas, a gravy that shrieked “mmm Bisto” and a mound of buttery mashed potatoes (B.235). Mick meanwhile was tucking in and reminiscing about the last time he had enjoyed a gammon steak so much (decades ago!) and we were both waxing lyrical about this classic, traditional food that had successfully made the long trek from the British Isles to the Land of Smiles. Incidentally, the Thai menu abounds with over 30 items to please the most discerning Thai diner.

Gammon Steak

No self-respecting pub would be without fish and chips and here it is a house speciality featuring huge fillets of white fish deep-fried in a “light as a feather” batter and served with mushy peas and chef’s individual tartar sauce. So many mouth-watering dishes on this menu – I haven’t even mentioned the famous Pig and Whistle mixed grill yet! Valiant trenchermen only are required to tackle this gourmand’s platter of sirloin steak, pork chop, lamb chop, pork sausage, liver, kidney, fried eggs, grilled mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, fried onions and chips. It will set you back B.500 but then you probably won’t eat again for a week! We really enjoyed the classic homely dishes here at the Jomtien Pig and Whistle. For a true taste of the best of British it would be hard to beat this most convivial pub with its hearty, nourishing food, friendly staff and welcoming vibe.

it often. Preferably with an accurate tyre pressure gauge at an authorized garage.

Driving Style: Drive like your mother or grandmother is riding shotgun. No jackrabbit starts. Avoid over-revving and no more va-va-voom! Always drive in a straight line whenever possible. Choose the route that offers the fewest corners and curves and when motoring on the highway avoid switching lanes continually.

Sunroof or Panoramic Moon Roof: Sometimes called skylight. These retractable glass roofs add more weight to the vehicle depending on the size of the opening. Furthermore an open sunroof interrupts the car’s airflow, increasing drag and reducing fuel efficiency.

Regular Maintenance/Tune-ups: Pay special attention to air filters because dirty filters diminish the air flow. Tyre Pressure: When the rubber meets the tarmac there's friction, rolling resistance. The higher the pressure of the tyre the lower the rolling resistance and the greater the fuel savings. We recommend that you take five minutes every fortnight to check the tyres. The sticker usually mounted on the driver-side doorjamb lists the correct manufacturer's recommended air pressure. Check

THE MELODY LINGERS ON By MARY HIGGINS CLARK 9781471152139 Lane Harmon, assistant to a renowned interior designer, is used to meeting the rich and famous in their opulent homes. But when she is called to the Bennett house, she knows this job will be different. Parker Bennett has been missing for two years - since just before the discovery that billions of dollars had vanished from a fund he managed. The scandal has not died and a cloud of suspicion remains around his name. Did he commit suicide or was his disappearance staged? His wife is convinced Parker is innocent - and alive. But there are people after him who are determined to learn the truth at any cost. And the more Lane gets drawn into the Bennett’s world of glamour and intrigue, the most she puts her life and those of her family in jeopardy.

Overload: Too much clutter, too much stuff in the vehicle. Don't schlep around heavy golf bags, tennis rackets, skate boards, books and magazines, the big old CD collection and especially those large, blunt rooftop cargo boxes which increase aerodynamic drag (wind resistance). Roof rack? Remove it and make your vehicle more aerodynamic.

the McDonald's Drive Thru. Park and walk a few steps. You'll get your burger and French fries and coffee faster. Plus you don't have to eat and drink in the car. Eating while driving can be dangerous. Cruise Control: Tom Cruise? No, cruise control. Up to 14 percent savings, average savings of 7 percent. If you got CC use it on the highway and motorway. Buying a new car? Ask for cruise control. Buy a Diesel: Mazda 2 SKYACTIV-D 1.5 or BMW “Torque of the Town” diesels: 3, 5 or 7 Series alternatively the Mercedes-Benz E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID. Diesel engines will give you 20 to 30 percent savings in fuel consumption.

Park in the Shade: Heat causes evaporation. The oven hot vehicle takes longer time to cool and uses maximum A/C power. Again, more fuel consumed and it's hard to drive when you can't touch the steering wheel without burning yourself!

When to Top Up? Purchase your gasoline during the coolest times of the day, when the liquid is at its highest density. Since fuel is sold by volume, the pump will register the same be the temperature hot or cool, but you'll actually have more concentrated liters when you fill up in the cooler hours of early morning or late evening.

Idling: When you arrive at your destination turn off the engine immediately. Needless idling wastes fuel and money and is bad for the environment for our planet Tellus. Avoiding excessive idling can save up to 19 percent fuel. Next time. Don't use

This Is Acting – Sia

This Is Acting is the upcoming seventh studio album by Australian singer-songwriter Sia, scheduled to be released on January 29, 2016. The album was preceded by the release of the lead single, "Alive" on September 24, 2015. She revealed details of This Is Acting for the first time in an interview published by NME in February 2015. In the article, she confirmed once again that work on the album was finished and that its content was "more pop" than her previous material. She also revealed that the success of her sixth studio album 1000 Forms of Fear, specifically its lead single "Chandelier", encouraged her to continue releasing new material, and said of the album's title: "I'm calling it This Is Acting because they are songs I was writing for other people, so I didn't go in thinking 'this is something I would say'. It’s more like play-acting. It's fun."

Tipron

And the real killer is …

The Transforming, Internet Connected Projection Robot

Tipron is a home robot that can automatically project an 80-inch screen from a distance of 3 meters. Its transforming function allows it to project at a variety of different heights and angles and contract to a compact size when not in use. Tipron will automatically adjust its height depending on its current operating mode, for example. Tipron can contract to 40 cm height when charging and moving, and then expand to 80 cm when projecting or shooting images. Furthermore, images and video up to 1 m high can be projected by adjusting the projection angle.

Nikon D5 Nikon introduces the D5, an FX-format DSLR that makes the impossible possible. Huge advancements in sensor design, autofocus, metering and image processing result in thrilling new capabilities—low light shooting all the way to ISO 102,400 (expandable to an unheard of ISO 3,280,000), precise AF detection and tracking across that entire ISO range, regardless of your subject's speed or direction changes, blazing fast 12 fps continuous shooting, 4K UHD video and, of course, image quality that captures the hearts and minds of your viewers. This is not iteration, friends. This is innovation...spectacular innovation.

The latest book on the identity of Jack the Ripper spends the first 100 pages talking about this and that before coming to the actual murders in Whitechapel, London in 1888. Bruce Robinson (“They All Love Jack: Busting the Ripper”) promises us that he really has cracked the case. His chosen perpetrator of the murderer of prostitutes in Victorian London is concert hall star Michael Maybrick, brother of the better-known Ripper suspect James Maybrick, the Liverpool cotton merchant. Robinson argues that the murders of five women were inspired by Masonic ritual, based largely on the positioning of the bodies, which is hardly a new theory. Previous writers have also sought to implicate Masons in the murders, most

particularly the surgeon Sir William Gull who was in turn linked to the royal family. Author Robinson argues that there was a conspiracy involving the police to prevent the capture of Michael Maybrick who apparently had a loathing of prostitutes and believed it was pioneer social work to cut out their insides. Of course, Robinson could be right. But not necessarily. He builds up a case for believing that the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Warren may have known who the Ripper was. In reality, Commissioner Warren was without any experience of mass murderers and was a soldier rather than a policeman. If he wasn’t clever enough to find the culprit, it is hardly likely he was intelligent enough to run a clever conspiracy. He didn’t even know what to do with the letters sent to police headquarters by the murderer or someone pretending to be him. But the real problem with Robinson’s book is his heavy-handed approach in which anyone putting forward an alternative theory is dismissed as a complete idiot. Reading this weighty tome from cover to cover is rather like being stoned to death or continually hit with a stocking full of wet sand. He bamboozles his literary audience without mercy, taking it for granted that they are all pig-ignorant and open to this kind of silly pressure to conform with the findings. There are pages and pages of medical findings and the author could be right about digging up corpses and performing autopsies. The fact is that after 130 years we are never likely to know for sure who the real Jack the Ripper was. It might have been a Polish lunatic, the writer Lewis Carroll or even Queen Victoria’s grandson Prince Albert. Incidentally, several of the contenders for Jack’s title were gay, including the schoolmaster Druitt, and Robinson dismisses them all as horrendous people but without the ability to commit mass murder. He seems not to believe that the murders could have been committed by a committee or a cabal of miscreants. It is all too easy for researchers to come up with a theory about the identity of the Ripper. One witness even said Jack was actually a woman, thus leading to the conclusion she was Jill the Ripper. One candidate could be Maud Hetherington, a warder in an insane asylum who took a month off work to rid London of sexual scum. When she died in 1922, a selection of knives was found in her bedside drawer. The only real evidence is from Maud’s sister who admitted to the police that she was a “queer fish”. Well, it’s a theory, isn’t it?

2015 – What a Year It Was! Looking back on 2015, I remember very well that the year started with some rather shocking headlines that turned out defining the year itself. Headlines in the first days of 2015 such as “Numbers of tourists from Russia falling by the minute” and “Booming high seasons are but a memory for Pattaya hotels.” As you can imagine, such headlines and the reality they reflected did nothing to bolster an already declining real estate market. It was a somber beginning for 2015...a year many--very many-- Pattaya business owners would soon begin to realize was going to be very tough. In many cases impossible! It was not a stellar start for the New Year, so I thought it might be best to take a slight diversion from the doom and gloom business headlines and write about something almost everybody appreciates: fantasizing about ‘Building Your Own Dream Home;’ for the first three editions of the new year that is exactly what I did.

By late February we were not looking much better and I had to think hard about our local real estate market and what was good about it. Was anything in the market positive? That’s when it struck me: Land Prices were still on the Move! Yes, for more than 12 years now land prices on the Eastern Seaboard have been going up, up and up; that certainly was something worth considering inasmuch as it recognized that the property market had potential. We were now into the month of March 2015, and Pattaya’s condominium construction segment appeared to be recklessly heading towards a crash. It was not a spectacle that I could easily accept or wanted to believe, but the ‘C’ word had been on the lips of Eastern Seaboard and Bangkok residents for months. Looking back, it was a crash for many local developers; only the very best held their own. With the local economy apparently challenged by April, I examined the real-estate agency scene and wrote about the ‘Big Guns and the Gang’--an article on international franchise agencies (Big Guns) and the rest of us (Gang), and how the economic situation was affecting us all. A huge surprise was the closing of Colliers International, not to mention the number of Russian agencies that left the country in droves! It was in May of 2015 that some of the cracks were starting to show and I wrote my ‘Con of The Year Award’ column! Con was not short for ‘contractor,’ but for ‘Con Man,’ as in the Big-Boy developers who walked off with the big money as the rumor mill was churning away with speculation and finger pointing.

by Clayton Wade Managing Director

Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd. clayton@premierinternational.com

By this time (June) we had reached the halfway mark in the year and had seen gloomy headlines, more and more real estate agencies shutting their doors, demoralizing talk around town, and dismal forecasts. I was forced to stop and think seriously because I could not continue writing depressing columns about a lackluster real estate business with a bleak future. But I was at a loss to conjure any positive topics for my next column. “This is really bad,” I thought, and then asked myself, “Just How Bad is it?” Are things getting worse or getting better and how could I know how to answer those burning questions. One day, as I was driving back from Bangkok to Pattaya, I noticed for the first time how many empty sign boards there were on the motorway. So I started counting. Lo and behold, of the last 40 sign boards on Highway 7 before reaching Pattaya, I counted 19 that were blank. That’s right; nearly half had no advertising on them whatsoever.

Continuing on a bright note in closing 2015, we had several more notable events beginning with the Thailand Property Awards in September which always brings a full dining hall of more than 500 industry elite to witness the honoring of the best developments in the country. November was a full month that featured the National Association of REALTORS annual Conference & Expo in San Diego. The event attracted 22,000 members, more than 2,000 of whom were from abroad-- including me and eight Thai delegates. Then came a brand new event in Singapore.

Billed as the Property Report Congress, it was a forum for industry leaders, VIPs and South East Asia Property Awards winners and judges to discuss how to continue driving growth and excellence in the world’s most dynamic real estate markets. Immediately following was the South East Asia Property Awards 2015 which showcased ASEAN’s finest developers and designers.

I naturally concluded—and penned a column about—the relationship of the market to billboard advertising, and halfseriously fabricated the ‘Clayton Wade Sign Board Index’ (SBI). Looking back, it was hilarious as readers took the concept seriously. In fact, one top real estate editor even asked if I would like to do a monthly commentary on my Sign Board Index. The last half of 2015 was just as tough as the first, but it certainly did have a lot of great events on the calendar for real estate agents. We had our fifth five-day Certified International Property Specialists (CIPS) Training Course in Bangkok in July, then we were off to the Philippines for the National Association of R E A LT O R S © (NAR) very first International R E A LTO R S Conference (IRC) outside the United States. Representatives from all the ASEAN+3 (China, Japan and South Korea) nations attended, bringing the region’s real estate associations so much closer. There also was a flurry of MOU signings to declare solidarity and support in developing the real estate industry across Asia.

Our very special thanks to Clayton Wade, managing director of Pattaya’s Premier Homes Real Estate Co., Ltd., for preparing this Pattaya Today column. He himself has been in the real estate industry for over 30 years, having started his career in the United States where he was licensed and practiced both real estate sales and property management in Seattle, Washington. Wade is a Certified International Property Specialist (CIPS) and a CIPS certification instructor

In the final month of the year, Somsak Chutisilp, president, and Clayton Wade, vice president of the Thailand Real Estate Sales and Marketing Association were invited to Vietnam to sign a formal MOU with the Vietnam National Real Estate Association as gesture of mutual support in promoting real estate education and business between our two countries. As you can see, despite starting the year on a negative note, 2015 actually did have some high points; I would call it ‘money in the bank’ as concerns our real estate future on the Eastern Seaboard. The ASEAN+3 and in fact the entire Asia Pacific rim actually had a great year in 2015 which was filled with progress and unification and that can only be the foundation for the ‘Better Years’!

In light of ongoing market volatility worrying stakeholders, it is comforting to know there are funds that have been specifically set up to avoid the machinations of the world's stock markets in selected sectors enjoying very strong demand. Stock markets have generally rallied since the 2008 financial crisis; however, the fact is that recent declines have left the major indices floundering well below 2007 levels. Simply put, had your money been linked to the main indices from then until now, you would still be showing a loss, and inflation, albeit at a low level, would be further eating away at your capital. One particular sector that continues to shine is the holiday park leisure business. When we remember the ’60s and ’70s image of the then holiday camps, it is usually with distain. However, gone are the days of grotty chalets and depressing venues. With a huge modernisation programme providing vastly upgraded facilities, this is one of the sectors attracting more and more attention. Apart from the fact that it’s on a growth path, a significant number of UK local authority pension funds have invested in such funds, along with many big UK corporate household names. Consequently, we have looked at the sector in depth. It’s not often we’ve been able to identify a particular fund that has demonstrated the business acumen required to deliver good investment performance right throughout the turbulence. The UK leisure park business is currently a 3 billion GBP per annum business and growing. The purchase/ rental of prime sites and significantly upgrading the facilities is one part of the equation. ‘Camp’ sites are being replaced with modern, fixed units/log cabins and amenities, resulting in both increased capital values and higher revenue streams. One particular organisation, with its institutional funding, has been able to put in place an impressive development and acquisition schedule over the coming years, which is likely to ensure continuing worthwhile returns into the medium term. In addition, it won the ‘Alternative Investment Manager of the Year’ award at the 2015 European Pensions Awards. Keep in mind, there is no correlation between this fund’s strong performance and the stock markets. Once again, we see the scenario that has proved successful in recent times; a dominant position in a specific sector that’s enjoying very strong demand, with rising values/income, without direct connection to the ups and downs of the markets. As with all property or hard asset-linked funds, there is always the question of liquidity. The holding of real assets, by its very nature, means they cannot be disposed of overnight. Nonetheless, the liquidity level maintained in this fund is well above the industry norm, whilst still achieving worthwhile returns for its stakeholders. There is a ‘bull’ growth period in the UK leisure holiday park market which is generating substantial profits, however, that is not likely to carry on at this level indefinitely. Industry experts forecast a 10- to 15-year window in which the UK’s domestic leisure parks will be brought up to world-class standards. In the meantime, there could well be an opportunity to reap rewards from this increasingly successful business. The only issue for potential investors, as we speak, is that this fund has reached its desired funding level and subscriptions are only being accepted where they replace redemptions through death, or other financial necessity. For interested parties, current availability is on queued ‘request’ basis only. Thailand drills down to drive domestic travel by Tourism Authority of Thailand, www.TATnews.org Thailand will boost domestic tourism as part of its objectives to achieve sustainability in tourism, H.E. Deputy Prime Minister, Somkid Jatusripitak, told a press briefing, along with top officials from the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), as well as public and private sectors that involve in the tourism industry. The core discussions touched on how to launch corrective measures and promotional campaigns through cooperation with related organisations, the private sector and airlines to boost the country’s tourism this year. The deputy prime minister concluded that to achieve tourism competitiveness and a sustainable market share, Thailand should place strong emphasis on domestic travel. “The tourism ministry and TAT have been assigned to brainstorm and introduce policies to drive the country’s tourism forward,” the deputy prime minister explained. “One project that needs to be discussed is ‘One District One Tourist Destination’ to add more value to popular destinations as well as create new destinations through a story line to encourage travellers to explore new places.” The policy should also develop tourism and local product quality, he added, noting that particular attention should be given to the quality of souvenirs, tourism activities and walking streets.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports, TAT as well as the Board of Investment of Thailand have been assigned to launch incentive measures to encourage the private sector and communities to invest in the tourism and hospitality sectors. To strengthen Thailand’s gateway status in regional tourism, the deputy prime minister encouraged authorities to tap cooperation with Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam (sometimes referred to as the CLMV market in trade circles). “The emphasis should be on developing joint travel packages, tourism products, air services and transport,” he said. Tourism and Sports Minister, H.E. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, told the news briefing the domestic market would be a key economic stimulator this year as campaigns encourage travellers to explore beyond popular tourist destinations. “We are confident that specific campaigns such as the 12 Hidden Gems, 12 Hidden Gems Plus and ‘According to Legend …’ will boost the country’s domestic market this year,” she said. To encourage domestic travel, authorities will meet with the airlines to open new destinations and increase the frequencies to major destinations. “We need to study the potential of new routes that build traffic to Pattaya’s U-Tapao, Krabi and Chiang Mai International Airports and link secondary destinations to neighbouring countries

particularly Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar and Vietnam. Direct flights are needed to destinations promoted in the 12 Hidden Gems and 12 Hidden Gems Plus campaigns that will be our priority, but we need to estimate the province’s potential to attract traffic and airport capacity.” The TAT governor, Dr. Yuthasak Supasorn, identified a new campaign “Thai Chuai Thai” (Thai Supports Thai) that will reward Thai travellers through a monthly lucky draw worth 1 million baht, while adding an even bigger reward quarterly to encourage Thais to travel in the country.

Details will be released ahead of the campaign’s launch in February. It will extend to December. “We are now discussing with the airlines and hotels to offer discounts to encourage Thais to travel in the country particularly long-weekend holiday offers and specific travel packages to tap niche markets such as government officials, corporate incentives, students, retirees and sports enthusiasts,” he added. Thailand’s tourism is expected to generate more than 2 trillion baht in revenue this year, of which in excess of 1.5 trillion baht will come from international markets.

Amari Phuket Thai business optimism receives Powering rises slightly in Q4/2015 Global Travel Award

Tipaporn Koonphol (right), deputy general manager of Amari Phuket, is presented with the Powering Global Travel Award by Stefan Sorge (center), area sourcing manager of Gulliver’s Travel Associates (GTA) Thailand, and Juraiwan Leelawit (left), marketing manager, GTA Phuket. GTA has been a leading worldwide travel agency since 1975.

by Grant Thornton Thailand Business optimism rose slightly in Q4 in Thailand from -8 to 4 percent in Grant Thornton's quarterly business survey. This was generally reflected across most areas showing increased optimism for areas like revenue, selling prices, exports, profitability, investment in new buildings, investment in plants and machinery, increased spending in R&D, increased access to finance, and reduction in red tape. However, areas that continued to decline were plans to increase the workforce, availability of skilled workers, ICT infrastructure and transport infrastructure. Within ASEAN, Malaysia reported increased optimism in Q4, although that was off a very low base compared to Q3, so remains low (from -28 to -14 percent); Singapore's optimism declined (from -14 to -16 percent) reflecting continued pressure on the island economy and its exposure to Malaysia and global trade; the Philippines's perennial optimism was only slightly diminished (from 86 to 84 percent), and Indonesia had a strong rise in optimism (from 36 to 56 percent), although this may not be sustained inasmuch as

Indonesia missed its GDP growth target for 2015. Globally, business optimism in Q4 remained relatively firm with European companies showing some resilience. Andrew McBean, partner and specialist on the ASEAN and the AEC commented, "Thailand's optimism in Q4 reflected not so much increased optimism but just less pessimism with many analysts in that quarter predicting that 2016 would be better for Thailand than a dismal 2015. With the World Bank recently revising its GDP growth estimates for Thailand to 2.0 percent in 2016, 2.4 percent in 2017 and 2.7 percent in 2018, optimism will remain relative to these already reduced expectations. ASEAN will likely remain mixed with some brighter spots in the Philippines and Vietnam." Grant Thornton’s research finds that despite revenue expectations in China falling from 33 to 21 percent this quarter, across Asia Pacific this has only shifted from 38 to 36 percent. Similarly, Chinese export expectations slipped from 14 to just 6 percent but across the region in Q4 this was at 11 percent, down only very slightly from 12 percent.

Globally, business optimism heading into 2016 stands at net 36 percent – only slightly down from Q3 2015 and just above the 35 percent recorded a year ago. Net 38 percent of EU businesses are optimistic about their economy over the next 12 months, the same as in Q3. Businesses in Latin America reported big quarterly increases in optimism. Andrew added, "Within all of ASEAN and Asia Pacific we can expect continued volatility for the whole of 2016 due to the manufacturing slowdown in China, tepid and uneven global economic recovery and geopolitical security concerns stemming from the Middle East, Korea and, more locally, the South China Seas. European economies are showing a small increase in stability though. "The global economy continues to change and evolve, with shifting landscapes in major economies creating new challenges but also new opportunities. Those businesses with an instinct for growth will be best placed to spot these emerging pockets of opportunity, build new trade links, and make the most of a volatile 2016."

Getting it right by Paul Poole photos PIMEX 2016

The yachting industry in Southeast Asia has seen significant growth in recent years with yacht shows, races and regattas increasing in size, numbers and frequency. In Thailand alone, the next 12 months will see at least five different international yachting events, which are expected to generate millions of dollars and attract tens of thousands of visitors. The reasons for this kind of growth are manifold: destinations such as Phuket, Langkawi and Singapore meet many of the key requirements of becoming premier sports tourism destinations, including easy access, a pleasant climate, a certain level of prestige, authenticity and, finally, diversity in the form of other tourism and leisure related facilities, including spas, restaurants and luxury accommodation options. The shift in wealth from west to east is also a determining factor. The number of superyachts sold to Asian buyers is steadily increasing as is the number of visiting yachts from elsewhere in Asia, Europe and the Americas. This is due in no small part to the excellent facilities in place at the region's marinas; investors and entrepreneurs pour money and effort into supporting businesses and added services such as charter and catering companies, concierge services and technical support.

Last but not least, the Thai, Malay and the Singaporean governments are actively and aggressively supporting and promoting the yachting industry. The Thai Ministry of Transport recently announced a new license that allows foreign-flagged superyachts to charter in Thai waters, a move which is meant to incentivise overseas yacht owners to bring their yachts to Southeast Asia rather than, for example, the Caribbean, during the European off season. In other words, sports tourism is becoming a buzzword and entrepreneurs, investors and governments are all buying in. This presents a huge opportunity for organisers to put on bigger and better events and for brands and businesses to reach out to a specific target group of high-net-worth individuals, build brand identity, and align their marketing initiatives with some of the region's biggest and most prestigious events. It also means that there is a growing need for marketing consultants to help match sponsors for the many events on the ever-growing annual yachting calendar, and help both sponsors and organisers to maximise their potential. In the 10 years that we have sold yachting events in the region, we have witnessed a significant change in the way these events are run and the expectations sponsors have. It is no longer sufficient to

simply print a few T-shirts and a poster; as events are becoming more professionally run, brands and businesses have higher expectations and they want innovative solutions and sophisticated marketing. Below are some steps organisers and sponsors can take to make successful events and get the most out of the partnership. Before the event Planning is the key to a successful event and it is important that sponsors and organisers identify their objectives. Contrary to what many believe, sponsors are not benefactors and the event is not a charitable cause. Rather, sponsorship is a value-adding exercise for both organisers and sponsors and it is important to approach it from that point of view. Organisers should understand the needs and objectives of brands and businesses, just as brands and

businesses should understand the particular event and its participants in order to maximise the benefits of the sponsorship. During the event Activation is the key to a successful sponsorship. A rule of thumb is for every dollar spent on sponsorship, sponsors are encouraged to spend an additional dollar on the activation of the sponsorship. The world of advertising is changing and with print media seeing a drop in advertising and TV struggling to attract viewers, specialised events such as a yacht show, race or regatta offer a perfect opportunity for brands and businesses to engage and interact with their target customers. Examples that we have seen in the past include a car brand offering test tours to event visitors, or a spirit brand setting up a special cocktail

brands. Paul Poole (South East Asia) Co., Ltd. has packaged, sold and managed sponsorship and partnership opportunities for a number of Southeast Asia's leading yachting events, including Asia Superyacht Rendezvous, Asian Yachting Grand Prix, Bay Regatta, Boat Asia, Neptune Regatta, Ocean Marina

bar. In addition to more traditional activation methods and tools such as promotional booths and merchandise, both sponsors and organisers should acknowledge the ever-increasing importance of social media as a prime communication tool. With event participants active on a variety of platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter, sponsors have a vested interest in being highly visible throughout the event and organisers can increase their visibility by being associated with brands and businesses that already have a large following. After the event Don't make the mistake of thinking that the job is done as soon as the last participant has left the event. Now is the time to measure the benefit of the sponsorship, and while most sponsors are looking for a return on investment, which they can quantify in terms of actual sales and leads during the event itself, there are benefits which aren't immediately measurable, such as long-term brand attributes, increased awareness and indirect sales. You can’t always put a monetary value on an objective, so organisers should help sponsors meet objectives that are SMART – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed. With the yachting calendar in Southeast Asia becoming increasingly busy and with consumers and participants having more shows, races and regattas to choose from than ever before, it is crucial that organisers and sponsors work together to ensure events remain relevant, attractive and entertaining or they risk losing out to the competition. Youth Focus Tips for You to Help Your Young Reader by Sandra Haeberli

Hello everyone! We all would like our children to read well. Sometimes though, our children may struggle with reading; forgetting sounds of letters or forgetting words they have just read. You, as a parent, want to help but how? Here are a few tips to help you help your child become a better reader. Talk to your child. Ask them about their day. Encourage them to tell you something they did or made in class. Read and connect what you read to their everyday life. If you are reading about animals, relate it to the last time you were at the zoo or farm. Use your child’s name. If their name begins with the letter ‘C’, say another word that begins with that same letter. Example Caren, cat! Caren, coat! Brian, bear! Brian, bird!

Trace and say letters. Trace a letter with their finger on paper or sand. Say the sound of the letter as you trace. Play sound games. Practice blending sounds of letters into words. Have your child try to guess the word you are sounding out. Example ‘d-o-g.” Make the sound of each letter and hold it longer than normal. Read and read it again. Reading your child’s favourite book over and over again

GIS Talent Show Secondary students at Garden International School (GIS) ended Term 1 with a talent show that was packed with singing and dancing. Various bands and solo artists took to the stage, playing a variety of modern hits. Guest judges included GIS Principal Dr Stuart Tasker, and they had a tough job picking a winner. Eventually the winners were Inside Out, a female trio from Year 11. Well done to Prefects Jun Beom and Praw for organising the show. Mark Beales is assistant head of Secondary at Garden International School

helps in the development and acquisition of new vocabulary. Familiarity is the key to learning new words. Try to use one of these tips each week to see what works best for your child. Also, speak to your child’s teacher about other ways to help get your child on the road to better reading. Sandra Haeberli is a teacher at Mooltripakdee International School.

Cheaper to have

lowered the Atlantic Titanic 2 is actually a “mockbuster”

Titanic 2 is a disaster all round

Dr Goebbels was arguably the first Titanic buff

Surprisingly, the first movie actually to be called Titanic was Dr Goebbels’ Nazi version of 1943. It showed, or tried to, how Britain’s Jewish and aristocratic elite of 1912 were more interested in making a profit from a quick voyage than in ensuring the safety of everyone on board. Actually, the propaganda minister did not give permission for the movie to be shown in German cinemas, fearing that the panicky crowds on the sloping decks were too reminiscent of the US and British bombing raids on the cities of the Reich. In 1953 Hollywood came up with their own Titanic, though it’s really the tale of the wrecked marriage between Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck using the maritime disaster as a background to their particular human drama. There are rather a lot of mistakes in the movie, notably an ice spur is shown ripping open the left (port) side of the

liner instead of starboard. It’s also untrue that Titanic’s crew wore British navy uniforms. Britain’s answer in 1958 was A Night to Remember which is a generally successful, documentary style approach based on Walter Lord’s book of the same name. However, there are still a number of goofs. Smoke is shown coming out of all four funnels (Titanic’s fourth funnel was a dummy). Worse, the film caused a sensation which lasted for decades for portraying White Star’s chairman Bruce Ismay as a coward and for blaming Captain Lord of the nearby Californian for not going to the rescue. In 1997 the Oscar laden Titanic appeared starring Leonardo and Kate. The movie should really be labeled Sex in the North Atlantic which is probably why it has been one of the most successful films ever made. You can still buy the DVD in Tesco Lotus in

Pattaya by the way. There are a number of anachronisms in the movie such as the ship’s captain wearing contact lenses and songs being sung which were written years after the disaster, but never mind. And now in 2010 comes Titanic 2, possibly the worst movie ever to surface. Mercifully, it was made for TV and DVD only, so it won’t be able to harass the world’s movie theatres. Titanic 2 is the tale of a new replica liner setting off in April 2012, the centenary anniversary, to cross the Atlantic once again. But disaster strikes after a tsunami creates a turbulent sea and a stray iceberg strikes the side of Titanic; no oscars for guessing what comes next. Actually, it’s not a bad idea for a “mockbuster” – namely a movie whose only purpose is to trade on the name and reputation of a similarly named picture in order to make money. The subject is certainly

topical as the reason for the tsunami and the rogue icebergs is indeed global warming which is playing havoc with the world’s weather systems. The problem is the actual, awful script and the terrible special effects. The mockup of Titanic looks nothing like the original luxury liner and the funnels are too short. In an early scene, the words Titanic 2 are painted in big letters on the bow, but the name has disappeared by the time the ship actually sets sail. Worse, the Statue of Liberty is clearly shown in the background as Titanic 2 leaves for the open sea, but there’s no Statue of Liberty in Southampton so far as anyone knows. Once or twice the ship is actually called in the script USS Titanic rather than SS Titanic, one of dozens of careless errors in the production. The acronym USS is only used for American warships in any case. There is no real attempt

to develop characterization and the so called crowd scenes of passengers running amock are just plain daft, more reminiscent of Benny Hill’s musical retinue at the end of his TV comedy programmes. This movie, truth to tell, is so awful that it makes Bela Lugosi’s Grave Robbers from Outer Space (renamed Plan 9 From Outer Space) look like an oscar candidate. But worse is to come. The company which produced Titanic 2 has promised through a spokesman that there will be Titanic 3. Nobody is sure what the plot will be next time although it’s likely to involve the discovery of the wreck and a salvage operation. Now where have we learned about that before? Right, it was the 1980 offering Raise the Titanic which was a serious box office loser. As Lew Grade, who funded the picture, said at the time, “It would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic.”

This & That Combined with the excellent detoxification properties of lemons, lemon water effectively flushes your body of harmful toxins.

These 10 Morning Habits will Change Your Life by Top 10 Home Remedies Renowned American clergyman and social reformer Henry Ward Beech said, “The first hour of the morning is the rudder of the day.” Just as the rudder of a ship controls its course through the sea, your morning routine sets the tone for how the rest of your day will turn out. A slow, dull start in the morning usually culminates into an unproductive and lousy day. Some people may even start to feel physically sluggish, moody and dejected. On the contrary, people who follow a healthy morning routine are not only more organized but also a lot more energized and get a whole lot done in just a single day. While there is no single, ideal morning routine for everyone, you can adopt a few simple habits as part of your morning ritual that can alter the trajectory of your entire day.

Here are some morning habits that will change your life. 1. Start Your Day Early No, this does not mean you begin your day at the crack of dawn, but it doesn’t mean start your day at 8 am either. Early-risers have one incredible advantage over their still-asleep counterparts – the luxury of quiet surroundings in which to kick-start their day. Early morning is the time you are most at peace and your mind is at its clearest. Having just awoken, you are a clean slate in the wee hours. This is the best time to set a schedule for the rest of the day, write a journal entry, meditate or simply take a barefoot stroll through your garden and connect with nature. 2. Open Your Windows Opening the windows, not just your blinds, and promoting ventilation is crucial to staying healthy, according to the World Health Organization. Furthermore, allowing sunlight into your room is the first step toward wakefulness. In fact, it helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle by stimulating the body’s 24-hour biological system. 3. Meditate As you open your eyes and climb out of bed, grab a pillow, sit on it cross-legged and meditate for 15 minutes. Meditation is essentially clearing your mind and achieving a state of peace, free of any troubling thoughts nagging at you. This can take a while to master, but once you do, you will notice how you become less stressed, more focused and more decisive with each passing day. 4. Drink Lemon Water Drinking water early in the morning aids digestion and regulates morning bowels, a key to a healthy digestive system.

5. Shower Many of you might save the trouble of having to shower early in the morning by soaking in the tub each night before you go to bed. While that is a convenient alternative, especially if you tend to run late in the am, a morning shower has its own benefits. Stepping into the shower instantly refreshes your body and mind, along with cleansing you. It triggers circulation, soothes you and instantly wakes you up. It is also the perfect time to relax and mull over ideas, especially if you work a creative job. 6. Read Something Inspirational Let the first thing you read in the morning be an inspirational text that uplifts your spirits and motivates you to make the most of your day. Just as running and exercising each morning makes you physically fit, motivational reading is a mental workout that will keep you mentally strong throughout the day. When you incorporate an inspirational reading into your daily morning routine, you will notice you eventually become more creative, productive, resilient and calmer, as well as better equipped to face challenges. 7. Stay off the Phone Mobile phones have become almost as important as oxygen to most of us. It is often the last thing we use before we go to sleep and the first thing we use when we wake up. Well, no more. Wake up early and begin your day by not looking at your phone for two hours, or right before you leave for work. Indulge in other productive activities instead. As you do this every day, you will notice how much time you save and how much you actually get done in those two hours you usually waste away answering messages or browsing Facebook. 8. Keep a “Gratitude” List In the strife of everyday life, it is easy to forget the good things that happen to us. If we sit back and reflect, we will be able to count various things, big and small, that have made a world of difference to us. If you can, thank one person each day who you are grateful to have in your life. If that’s not really your style, or you are too much of an introvert for such a vocal expression of gratitude, maintain a list or journal and write down one thing every morning that you are grateful for in your life. Renowned self-help gurus swear by this mantra. Being thankful for what you have each day can make you an optimist over time and inspire you to achieve your goals. 9. Eat a Nutritious Breakfast The energy you get from foods like bacon, bagels, white bread and doughnuts depletes rapidly, and you become drowsy as all the blood from your brain travels to your stomach to break down these overcooked, highfat foods. On the contrary, eating a nutritious breakfast of slow energy-yielding foods, such as whole-grain cereals, fruits and lean protein, keeps you energized and alert the whole day. 10. Exercise Exercise can take many forms. Some of you might hit the gym each morning, some of you may prefer cycling, while some of you might go for a rigorous run around the neighborhood. All of them are terrific ways to get the blood flowing throughout your body and energize you. To read full article, visit www.Top10HomeRemedies. com.

How to Tell If He’s the Right One for You There’s no magic formula for determining whether the guy you’re with is exactly the right one for you. It isn’t easy, and it can take time. Relationship experts have identified the five signs outlined in this article as some of the most important indicators of how much long-term potential your relationship has. 1. Shared Values What are the essential components that make up the way you live your life? We don’t just mean surface things like jobs and favorite foods – we mean the deeper things, like what principles guide your treatment of other people and what you put your time and energy into. It’s important to ask yourself what your values are, and whether or not your significant other shares them. If he doesn’t, be careful – he probably isn’t the right one for you. Here’s another way to look at it: Have you been compromising your values just to make him happy? If so, this is not a good sign. You’re trying to change yourself in a way that isn’t healthy for you, and isn’t healthy for your relationship. 2. Mutual Respect Respect and values are the two most important factors to keep in mind when considering whether this one is the right one for you. Respect should always be a two-way street – you should respect him just as much as he respects you. Here are some good signs that show that he does respect you: - He listens when you share your feelings or concerns. - He can sense when there’s something wrong, and asks you what it is. - He is willing to compromise. - He values your opinion. - He appreciates you. - Your successes make him genuinely happy. 3. The Right Traits It’s ideal to know what traits and qualities you consider most important in a romantic partner before you start a relationship. If you’re trying to decide what’s most important to you when you’re already in a relationship, you may run into some difficulties. In any case, figure out what qualities you’re looking for, and ask yourself whether your current partner has them. The answer will help you decide whether he’s the right one for you or not. 4. Intuition Never ignore what your gut feelings are trying to tell you, but never let it be the only thing you base your decision on, either. Just let it serve as your guide. Intuition exists on a deeper level than simple physical attraction. It’s that feeling somewhere deep inside your mind and heart, the one that tells you he’s the right one for you. It’s not necessarily rational or explainable – you just know. 5. The Freedom to Be Yourself A man who can’t love all of who you are, including your imperfections, or who’s always trying to change who you are, will not value or appreciate you fully. If you feel free to be yourself when you’re around him, it’s a good sign that he may be the one for you. If you know that the person you’re with accepts you and loves you just the way you are – not only accepting your positive traits, but your flaws and weaknesses, too – you’ll feel confident and at ease. Local Sports PSC Tropical Golf from BJ's The Queen’s Cowboy comes thru! by Derek Brook This was supposed to be just a fill-in for those who did not want to play in The PSC Club Championship, so to give all the players an option we booked four tee times at this course. Naturally on the morning we went we had six four-balls and not enough time to tell the course so we left with hopes that they had a slack day. Naturally the course was busy. We do have fun. With all changed it was all down to the first tee, where I found the tee times behind us were solidly full, but fortunately a brief window occurred before we teed off so managed to slip the extras in. Happy days and we were all off by the time we were supposed to. Lucky me and a helpful starter. So well away it was obvious this would be a slow day with our four-ball waiting for many shots. Still the wind was not too strong and the weather was nice and warm so a great day was expected. The course was in good condition even if the fairways were a little worn, but the greens were

by James Olsen It was 32 excited golfers who set out for the long and tiresome journey to the popular Greenwood GC. One can hardly wait for the roads to be fixed as it will take approximately 20 minutes from the trip! Then we will be queuing up to play. On the buses, banter was somewhat subdued, in actual fact it was a quiet journey. I guess people took the opportunity to catch up on some sleep. Certainly the people that stay in the same hotel as I do! We played C and A nines from the white tees and, with hindsight being a wonderful thing, we maybe should have gone from the yellow tees

Winners of the flights with one of BJ’s finest fast and true and very tricky. All in all it was a good, if slow, walk around. Round over we were soon into the shower, and as one player said, “There is nothing like a warm shower,” and sure enough this was nothing like a warm shower. Still we do expect cold showers here most of the time. Sad when the course is full, but I suppose every saving is important. Soon back at BJ’s we got into the results at a decent time. Surprisingly the B flight had played better than the A flight.

In the A flight, 0 to 20, the winner was Mashi Kanata with 34 points ahead of a countback on 32 points that saw Tom Herrington in second and John Davis in third. In the B flight the winner was Dave Cooper with 38 points ahead of Mick Coghlan in second on countback. In third was Graham Buckingham with 34 points. Then it was time to relax. TTFN. Alex Field’s ahead of the rest! by San Mig Stu Three buses and a car were needed to ferry the players signed up for today’s earlier than usual departure by 15 minutes. Come 8:15 am there were still two or three players who obviously forgot we were leaving earlier this morning or their alarm clocks failed to wake them on time or in the case of the last to board at 8:30 (no names mentioned, Roy), his watch was slow! Despite the delay we arrived with plenty of time to have a coffee or beer as the case may be and the first group teed off from the white tees on time at 9:46 am. There was some concern of a slow round to contend with when the marshal sent the last group to tee off in front of us as a five-ball, and four of them were walking! After three or four holes they got a wriggle on and we finished our round under clear skies in good time. The writer can’t actually recall how long it took but does recall counting the 12 cans of beer he consumed during his round and he also noted it was still daylight when they walked off the 18th green…hic! Back at the Swan, Peter Grey welcomed Brad Green, Rod Williams, Khan Speechley, The Colonel and Nyall Stewart and with no farewells continued with the presentations.

Two players had 38 points (Mark Stapleton and Ian Marsterson), Colonel Alan Sanders had 37 points whilst a number of players scored 36 and 35 points, however due to countback requirements only Don Richardson and the late arrivalist Roy Dayton got some chocolates! Nigel Perry smashes records on holiday bash As another fine year comes to an end, the Tropical Golfers assembled for their annual visit to Silky Oak and the muchanticipated feast afterwards. Also a good time to reflect on old and new friends met through the game we love to play (except those really bad rounds) and look forward to the year ahead and more of the same. It’s a Tropical Golfers tradition to play Silky Oak at the end of the year, and what a treat it is. A very interesting layout combined with excellent conditions makes

for a memorable day. The golfers really enjoy playing this course, and it would show in the scores – and how! Great scores were the order of the day and one in particular! Without further ado the big winner of the day was Nigel Perry (h'cap 24) with a stratospheric 46 points! Totally awesome, Nigel, and congratulations on a lifetime round. We all get in the zone once in a great while. Second place went to Torsten Bischoff (29) with a normally winning 42 points, followed by Dave Marshall

Somehow there were enough bottles of wine so that everyone left with a bottle and a smile. It is also the time to give a huge thanks to BJ's Holiday Lodge for hosting the Tropical Golfers. The owners and staff have been more than gracious and accommodating throughout the year and the group is lucky to have them. Also extra big thanks and a toast to Derek and Dick for organizing the golf for another year despite the difficulties of managing a handful of sometimes grumpy old men. And all for free. Happy New Year!

Local Sports Birch is the best! by Steve Ellison

Green Valley – Stableford – White Tees 1st – Ken Aihara (5) 38 points 2nd – Matt Davies (12) 37 points 3rd – Nicky Handscombe (12) 36 points T-4th – Jay Burns (2) 35 points T-4th – Nate Welchert (12) 35 points How green is thy valley? Pretty darn nice as we found the course to be in perfect shape for our Monday golf outing. Always a good thing to see our old mates back and especially when they mount that podium and get birthday cards from Phil. Nicky, Jay and Nate all joined up with us this week and showed the locals how to play Green Valley. In the case of Jay Burns, not an easy task when you are playing off just a 2 handicap. Matt Davies also got a card from the Captain, but a (mostly) local lad by the name of Kenny Aihara saw the sun shine his way as his 38 points took the top spot. It must be our famous “Sandbagger” breakfast that keeps him going! Parichat Links – Stableford – White Tees 1st – Steve Wentford (13) 37 points 2nd – Simon Burrows (20) 36 points

3rd – Grant Alexander (10) 35 points The last round of 2015 takes us to a little teaser of a course just 20 minutes down the road. This course is like Marmite, you either love it or you hate it! It is a unique golfing experience that’s for sure and the condition of the course just gets better and better. There are holes here you will not find anywhere else. Some would say that’s a good thing, but what makes this place special are some of those one-of-a-kind shots you end up with here that makes it fun and challenging. Fairways and greens were hard and a bit dry. Generally we saw improvements on a course that is maturing very nicely for being just over a year old. The construction is still going full tilt on the new clubhouse and hotel and when they get that open it will be a huge asset. The leader board today saw Scotsman Grant Alexander rack up 35 points on the card for a third place spot. It is time to say farewell to Simon Burrows and his 36 will keep the memory going as the Englishman heads back Canada way. First place goes to returning regular Stevie Wentford out here on another trip from Australia to complete our very international podium!

I give you…Mr. Aihara, Mr. Burns and Mr. Handscombe. Silky Oaks - Stableford – White Tees 1st – Fred Birch (23) 43 points 2nd – Kris Kritsanajootha (7) 37 points 3rd – Alan Rothwell (4) 36 points After a one-day break, the lads are off for the first round of 2016 and what better way to start it than Silky Oaks? This is becoming a very popular venue as the guys realize that it is now a regular 18-hole golf course and the value is hard to beat. All of the elevation changes here make for a very attractive layout as well. Sure, there are a couple of stupid long carries off the tee but not many courses will have you liking every hole. Alan is back, and with just a 4 handicap he manages 36 Stableford points for another great round of golf. Our old pal Kris K. is in town for a couple of weeks from San Diego where he is enrolled in the PGA golf instructors academy. That should finish in August and we wish him

the best for the future with his new life in the world of golf! Maybe Fred Birch should also think about turning pro? Fred’s 43 here today is the best scorecard we have seen in months! That’s a fantastic result Mr. Birch, the Senior Tour (I refuse to call it the Champions Tour) awaits! There’s nothing wrong with being a senior! Thank you to all who joined us and for your support of The Golf Club, the Home of Golf in Pattaya! The Golf Club is “The Home of Golf in Pattaya” and located on Soi LK Metro. We broadcast all English Premier League, UFC, NFL, MLB and AFL games live. Our kitchen is open from 7 am to 10:30 pm with our famous Steak Nights on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Richo brings in the New Year in style! by Dilligaf After week-long festivities, 17 golfers appeared at The Growling Swan a little worse for wear, but eager to take on Rayong CC. Warm welcomes were granted to Brent Stanbridge, Eugene Reed, Patrick Engels and Allan Ray. Many of us were playing at Rayong CC for the first time and what a treat it turned out to be. OK, as we have heard from other golfing outlets, the course is not in pristine condition, but this Faldodesigned course is a great layout and true test at 6,500 yards off the white tees. A rate of 900 baht green fee, caddie, shared cart, provides great value. We shall return on a regular basis! The par 4, fourth at Rayong CC is a cracking hole and whilst playing with Frankie Sharratt today, we learnt that if you’re afraid a full shot might reach the green while the foursome ahead of you is still putting out, you have two options: you can immediately shank a lay-up, or you can wait until the green is clear and top the

ball halfway there. Piere Cere played a very steady round, but realizes now that nonchalant putts count the same as chalant putts. Piere was unlucky to be pipped on a countback by the energizer bunny, Don Richardson. Alex Field also continued on with his recent good form to sneak a podium finish on a countback from Peter Grey. Back at The Swan, Bill Steinman was welcomed back from his enforced layoff and it was good to see that his elbow was still AOK! You & Your Pets Waiting a dog’s age for companionship? “Dogs' lives are too short. Their only fault, really.” So said Agnes Sligh Turnbull. She’s right, of course—given the average lifespan of most dogs. On the other hand, companionship in any form is a constant consideration among most retirees in Pattaya. Many of us satisfy that need by getting married or settling down with a live-in partner; others opt for shorter-term liaisons. Still others prefer furry friends that don’t talk back and provide us with honest, unconditional love. Whether you already have a fourlegged friend or are thinking of buying a puppy or adopting a mature dog, it’s a good idea to consider not only your lifestyle but also your life expectancy. The question being: Will you outlive your dog? The answer will depend on your age, of course, and the breed you choose. Pattaya is not at a loss for abandoned dogs of mixed breed. You will be well rewarded for taking in one of these unfortunate yet appreciative creatures. Dogs of questionable lineage generally live an average of 14 years. Overall, purebreds live an average of nearly 10 years. The difference may be because dogs bred to meet standards sometimes pass along problems in their genes, too. It’s hard to predict how long a mixed-breed dog will live—especially if it’s a soi dog, but your mutt is certain to be one-of-a-kind and probably a lot less expensive! If you have the bucks and insist on a pedigree, here is a rundown on how long you can expect various breeds to share your life. Yorkshire Terrier Yorkies live 14 to 16 years. Don't let the look of these feisty terriers fool you. While this popular breed is often pampered today, people used their ancestors to hunt rats. Little dogs tend to live a lot longer than larger breeds. Big dogs, it seems, just age faster. It may be because they have more growth hormones. Poodle Curly-haired poodles can be big or small. Toy-sized ones live 12 to 14 years, and the larger standards live about 12 to 15. The little dogs can easily get underfoot. In fact, accidents are a leading cause of death for poodles. So be on the lookout for your four-legged friend.

Maltese This elegant breed, which has a lifespan of 12 to 14 years, has been around for 28 centuries. Ancient Egyptians may have worshipped the dogs, and Greek and Roman philosophers wrote about them. With their long, silky white hair and gentle manner, it's hard to believe the Maltese, too, once hunted rats. Miniature Schnauzer Just 12 to 14 inches tall, miniature Schnauzers are sturdy, muscular dogs that typically live 12 to 14 years. Because the breed tends to live long and love kids, it's a great pick for family pets. These dogs can be prone to pancreatitis caused by high levels of fat in their blood, so he may need a special diet. Boston Terrier These smart little show-offs love to play. Young at heart, they usually live about 14 years. They may reel you in with their large eyes, but those peepers need protection. They stick out from their face, making it easier for the sun, wind, and dust to harm them. Shih Tzu Almost unknown to most of world until the 20th century, shih tzus were favorites of royalty in China’s Ming Dynasty. These hardy little charmers usually live 11 to 14 years. They don't have many health problems other than skin irritations; so they must be well groomed. Dachshund Who can resist lovable "wiener dogs"? Long-haired, wire-haired, or smooth, these playful pups usually live 12 to 14 years. In the Middle Ages, Germans used

dachshunds to hunt. Their long, low bodies were perfect for ducking into badger dens. To protect that long back from problems, he must be kept lean and prevented from jumping off high furniture. Beagle Beagles are curious, smart, and guaranteed to keep you entertained. This lovable, vocal breed lives 12 to 14 years. With their great sense of smell, they love to eat, so are easily overfed. Extra pounds can shorten any dog’s life. Shetland Sheepdog Farmers raised these dogs to herd animals on the Shetland Islands near Scotland. Because of their small size, they ate less and lived longer than other dogs. Today’s Shelties live 12 to 14 years. Their teeth are prone to infections that can lead to kidney failure. Labrador Retriever Labs are a larger-sized breed that lives a long time — 10 to 12 years. Energetic Labs love to play, so they’re likely to keep you young, too! Like other large dogs, they’re prone to hip problems, which can be painful, particularly as he ages. Chihuahua The Chihuahua, the smallest recognized breed, traces its roots back to the 9th century. Their ancestors were beloved by people of Central America. The mighty mites live as long as 14 to 18 years. Bred in warm climates, Chihuahuas don’t do well in the cold, so perfect for Pattaya. Given their small size, they may not be the right breed for young, active kids.

Cats for You in Pattaya Cats for You is a great and much needed service in our area, but Paul and Sandra point out that adopting a cat or kitten is a longterm commitment with costs such as feeding and veterinary fees. Many adopters find it’s a good idea to adopt two animals so that they can enjoy each others’ company as well as yours. Contact Paul and Sandra on 0852875004 or look at their useful website http://cats4youinpattaya.webs.com/

Chippy

We found this tiny 3-day-old kitten when visiting a local builder. While talking to the office manager we could hear her desperate cries and found her in a small box on top of a stack of pallets. Sadly her two siblings were already dead. She is now 3 weeks old, is doing well and should be ready in a few weeks’ time.

Tansy

Tansy is our meet-andgreet cat: he is always the first at the gate when people come to visit. He has to have his eyes cleaned every day after surgery that he received when he was just a tiny kitten. As you can see, his favourite hobby is eating!

Wilbur

This handsome boy was rescued as a kitten with his three brothers and sisters. Sadly, he was sick for quite a while and so missed the opportunity to get a new home like his siblings. As you can see, he is grown-up now and still waiting to be chosen.

Pug

Not so perfect for Pattaya are pugs, which don’t do well in heat. With their big eyes and flat snouts, pugs have the funniest faces. They live 12 to 15 years, so be ready for a long-term relationship. Pugs shed a lot, and they’re eager eaters that can get fat if you’re not careful. They may be high maintenance, but pug fans love this loyal breed, snorts and all. Notwithstanding any of the above, the late Charles Schultz put it most aptly, “Happiness is a warm puppy.”

You’re probably aware of family health measures, but do you know what issues are important to provide for your pet’s well-being? This Pattaya Today feature may help answer some common questions. Vegetarian people often want their pets to share their lifestyle. The trouble is cats are "obligate carnivores." This means they must eat meat to survive. They depend on nutrients, such as the amino acid taurine, that are only found in animal tissue. Dogs may be able to handle a wellbalanced vegetarian diet, but check with your vet first.

Bill & Ben

These two handsome and friendly brothers did go to a new home together last year but sadly their new owner had to go away and couldn't take them with him. So they are back here waiting to be chosen again. Both are very friendly, are used to children and just love to run and play in the garden.

Cat Corner Tip Scratch This Cats like to scratch. They do it to play, to stretch, to sharpen their claws, and to mark their territory. That's bad news for your furniture, carpets, and drapes.

Can you train your kitten not to scratch? No, but you’re not totally helpless in the battle. The best defense is to put different types of scratching posts all over your home. Make sure they are sturdy so they won’t fall over when your cat starts scratching. Then encourage your cat to use the surfaces by rubbing them with catnip and/or hanging toys on them. And when she uses the post, reward her with praise and maybe a treat. If she errs and scratches an item of furniture, clean it with an anti-odor product to discourage her from scratching it again.
