Driverless cars in Thailand?

magine you are the sole passenger in a sleek electric convertible as it speeds along Pattaya’s Sukhumvit Highway.

Relaxing in the front seat, you flick through your emails on your mobile phone, sip a glass of wine and even doze off to sleep. Feeling drowsy, you recall the silly days of old when such a vehicle would have been equipped with old-fashioned gadgets such as a steering wheel, pedals and a gear stick. Of course, you won’t need a driving licence as you are not in charge – every traffic cop’s nightmare. You are now living the dream of the driverless car.

Google has invested heavily in developing the self-driving vehicle and believes the moment is fast approaching when it will become the norm in towns and cities. The company has been investing heavily in developing the selfdriving vehicle in the United States for the past six years and says they have been involved in just 16 minor incidents over 700,000 miles of actual testing. Work is currently ongoing on sensors and software to detect road signs and other vehicles. Google has also confirmed that a Detroit-based company which designs and builds prototypes for the auto industry has agreed to build 150 Google prototypes.

There is no clear evidence of driverless cars on Thailand’s roads and the idea has met with laughter on motoring blog sites.

“There can be no future for driverless cars here,” said one Pattaya-based correspondent, “unless it is programmed to drive away speedily without stopping after an accident.” There are other concerns that hackers could meddle with a car’s control mechanisms to create rather than avoid accidents. Not to mention the ethical question that a real-life driver might choose to swerve a

car into a wall in order to avoid hitting a child. But how would a machine choose between two different actions that would impact human beings differently?

Moreover, the Department of Motor Vehicles in California, the main testing centre, has stated that fully autonomous vehicles will not be allowed on the roads anytime soon. The regulator says that a real human being with a real driving licence must always be present in the car and capable of taking control in the event of a technological failure or other emergency. Other concerns include the thought that an autonomous car might not be able to tell the difference between, say, a traffic cone and a dog. Although several leading car manufacturers are researching the self-driving revolution – including Ford, BMW and MercedesBenz – they are still unconvinced that the scope for human intervention can be eliminated altogether.

The Thai Transport Ministry has not commented on the whole issue, although a spokesperson for the Banglamung

Traffic Office said that the whole subject was still very tentative. “In any case,” he said, “it would require a change in the law to do away with driving licences.”

No doubt the police would oppose such a change in the law as handing over your driving licence is the very basis of much official action on the nation’s roads and thoroughfares, including the payment of fines bureaucracy.

But Google is not disillusioned by the opposition and the suspicions. It argues that human error is the cause of most accidents and should be eliminated from the driving process altogether.

It emphasizes too that a “partial” selfdriving capability, where control is handed back and forth between the car and the driver, is actually dangerous. In the opinion of Google, the whole point of a driverless car is that the human occupants will want to sit back and relax.

They could not be trusted to take charge of the vehicle in an emergency.

Beach huts dismantled

Civic officials visited the beach at Naklua after learning that three huts had been erected and people were consuming alcohol, according to social media. The builders said that the huts had been

built to protect sea animals, but it was pointed out that nobody is permitted to build on a public site as it is against the law. The huts were demolished.

Woman charged with child murder Police and the Pavena Foundation held a press conference to announce the arrest of Wanwisa Noosaen, 26 and living in Nong Plalai district, for killing a boy of 2 years who was in her care. The boy’s mother Meri Nammontri reported that her son had many wounds on his body and that he had a large chili in his stomach, according to hospital reports. Wanwisa, however, stated that she did lose her temper because the baby was crying and pushed him with the result that he hit his head on a wall. On the same day, she said, the boy was surprised by a cat and slipped and fell. Whilst she was cooking, she gave the boy a chili and he ate it without comment.

Shortly afterwards, the boy became unconscious and Wanwisa explained she had shaken him for 20 minutes. She then called the hospital. A police spokesman said officers did not believe all that she claimed.

Drug store criticized on Facebook A pharmacy owner has asked the police to arrest a Facebook contributor who criticized his business by saying that the drugs were far too expensive compared with other similar stores. But the owner Thanthanat Singtoniwet, 55, living in Nongprue, said the attack was unwarranted and mischievous as he had been operating for 10 years and never took advantage of customers. Police said they would assemble all the evidence and request the court to issue the necessary warrant of arrest.

Chinese ordered to pay

Two Chinese tourists on Koh Larn became frightened when a local vendor threatened to attack them if they refused to buy leather wallets they were inspecting.

Chen Lei, 43, and Xu Guangming, 45, paid 12,000 baht, then complained to the police who said they would investigate more further.

DARE marches on School holds market

Police colonel Sukthat Pumpanmuang, superintendent of Pattaya police station, presided over a ceremony to hand out certificates and flags to those in communities helping to combat crime and drugs. The programme is known as DARE and, in particular, campaigns against youngsters getting involved with illegal substances.

Navy questions illegal construction Vice Admiral Wipak Noijinda ordered his officers to investigate a restaurant and resort which had been built possibly without permission on land belonging to Sattahip Naval Base. Anti-dengue fever underway

The Division of Public Health Office in Pattaya organized a seminar for the Soi Khopai community on measures they can take to lessen the possibility of the mosquito-borne disease known as dengue fever.

Brochures were given out explaining that stagnant water pots in or near houses are very dangerous. Lotions which contain mosquito-repellant properties were given out to the general public. There is now a dengue vaccine available on the world market but it is not yet available in Thailand pending further tests.

Housekeeper suspected in robbery Facebook Police sallied forth to a hotel in Nongprue after learning that two rooms had been visited by a thief.

In one room, a Russian couple lost a valuable earring and ring, in the other a Turkish tourist was robbed of more than US$15,000 and a top-quality diamond ring.

The thefts were discovered when guests returned from sightseeing in the Pattaya area. The owner of the hotel suspects a new housekeeper who had apparently left in a hurry.

A German resident of Pattaya has asked the police to track down the malevolent person who hacked into his website and posted messages which defamed the royal institution. Manfred Peter Gallus, 52, said he would pay 30,000 baht for a resolution of the embarrassing case.

News Chinese New Year soon

The tourism and sports committee chairman Rattanachai Suttidechanai announced some of the events associated with Chinese New Year on February 8. At Lan Pho Park in Naklua there will be a Chinese boy and girl contest, dragon dance, fan dance, umbrella dance, kung fu demonstration and other wholesome pursuits.

At a closing ceremony, there will be a concert by talented musicians Lew Ajareeya and Aof Pongsak.

Duck cooking challenge Central Festival Pattaya Beach was the venue for the Thailand Duck Cooking Challenge 2016 in Eastern Region in which many chefs showed off their talents to the general public.

The winner would be eligible to take part in the finals in Bangkok in March and try to win the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn trophy and 500,000 baht prize money.

Nostradamus maybe With 2016 one-twelfth over already, here are 10 predictions which the 16th century French soothsayer Michel de Nostradamus predicted for the current year. Nostradamus did study astrology and the occult sciences and as a result tended to foresee tragedies and disasters more clearly than any good news.

The last president Nostradamus predicted that Barack Obama would be the United States’ last president. Quite what happens then isn’t so clear. Maybe Donald Trump seizes the White House and declares himself king rather than emperor. Or it’s possible that North Korea may take over America after demonstrating that they could after all rain down nuclear fire on Washington DC. Unusual weather Nostradamus wrote that “water shall be seen to rise as the ground is seen to fall underneath”. Well this has certainly been the case in parts of the flooded northern England. He also predicted natural disasters arising from the weather which could refer to the lack of rainwater in some parts of the world and a surfeit in others. Global warming is upon us.

Unusual planetary alignments The seer loved talking about the planets and their impact on world affairs. In 2016 expect to see astronomical changes triggering unpleasant events on earth such as a tsunami or two. Nostradamus also worried about planets or stars or rocks from outer space threatening to collide with the earth. After all, it’s in the bible.

Middle East on fire Petrol and oil in the Gulf States will be set on fire according to the prophet’s predictions for 2016. Of course, it’s already happening in Syria and Iraq but Nostradamus may be predicting a more general conflagration caused by European and US meddling in other people’s problems.

End of the world Nostradamus was rather fond of this one and refers vaguely to Iraq once again and the likelihood of Armageddon or The Final Battle. However, he was wrong in previous predictions about the termination of our existence and may be wrong again this time. Still, the Middle East is a hot spot by any definition.

White House games The prophet talks about America indulging in provocative international behaviour and daredevil tactics in diplomacy. Candidates here could include the Middle East again, ISIS, Afghanistan or even confronting China in the South China Sea. One false move could end the long stand-off on the Korean peninsula.

Melting poles So it’s back to global warming. While it is true that the North Pole has been heating up of late, no such warming has been detected in the vicinity of the South Pole. Nostradamus, of course, never used the expression global warming but he did refer once or twice to the conditions akin to a fire lit under the ice.

Fate of Israel Nostradamus states that Jerusalem will be assailed on all sides by its enemies and that the United States will lead a coalition to preserve the Jewish state. The problem with this prediction is that the seer makes it more or less every year. He seems to have predicted, too, that a Jewish state would come into existence after the defeat of Hitler.

Russia makes peace Given the stand-off between the United States and Russia, it seems odd that Russia making peace should be a firm prediction for 2016. Of course, Nostradamus may be referring to the Ukrainian crisis or Putin may decide that he has bitten off more than he can chew in Syria.

England in crisis Nostradamus suggests that political changes will leave Britain much weaker. He could be referring here to the Scottish independence movement, a possible Brexit from the European Union or even the rise to power of one Jeremy Corbyn. Can’t wait for 2017 to find out which was true.

News Driverless cars in Thailand?

In the decades ahead, the creation of increasingly advanced robots and the question of how far they should be permitted to conduct traditionally human tasks will be an immense challenge. After all, we already accept a world in which delicate operations on the

human body can be performed elegantly without human hands and in which pilotless drones can conduct devastating warfare. The advent of the driverless car will be an early test for the brave new world, howbeit one still lacking human trust and confidence.

But, for the moment, those weary

drivers waiting in traffic jams on Thailand’s crowded roads or trying to turn off after they notice a police road block ahead must continue to suffer in silence. Meanwhile, those action-packed days at the local traffic centre to renew your driving licence for another five years are not coming to an end any time soon.

Pattaya traffic problems highlighted

Spiky problem resolved

Senior police, civic officials and tourism representatives assembled to discuss how to solve the city’s traffic problems. It was pointed out that there were many issues, not least careless driving, not enough roads, too many cars and not enough parking areas for large coaches. Tourism officials stressed that

the police were too lenient and other suggestions included more cameras and extra traffic policemen. The meeting ended on an upbeat note with everyone agreeing that everyone must take their duties seriously and work together to improve the city’s image.

Police station gets renovation

Rescuers rushed to an address in South Pattaya after a report that a man had been cut by barbed wire whilst in a state of undress. Amnat Yindelam, 36, a motorbike taxi driver, said he had hung his pants out to dry but unfortunately slipped and fell down on some barbed wire. He called out for help and was heard by a neighbour in a nearby flat who summoned an ambulance without further ado.

Following a donation from the Ministry of Justice to bring police stations up-to-date, Pattaya police headquarters is to receive enhancements in order to prepare the ASEAN Economic Community,

according to police colonel Sukthat Pumpanmuang. There will be further discussions about how to spend the budget, but a new notice board outside and a repainting of the building are sure to be included.

Lost passports abroad cost Brits millions a year Using your passport as a beer mat or notebook or accidentally putting it in the laundry are just some of the reasons why British travellers are spending millions of pounds each year on Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) – issued when passports are lost, stolen or damaged whilst abroad.

In the last two years, 20,663 British passports were reported lost or stolen worldwide and British travellers received 37,890 ETDs: a 22 percent increase on the year before.

In 2015, lost and stolen passports in the Southeast Asia region accounted for 44 percent of all ETDs issued.

The British Embassy in Bangkok issues the highest number of ETDs in Southeast Asia. On average that is 55 ETDs each month – nearly 700 per year. Over 70 percent are down to lost and stolen passports.

Stolen passports remain an issue in big cities like Bangkok, mainly due to people’s bags being stolen, distraction thefts and pick-pocketing.

The British Embassy in Bangkok is urging

people travelling to Thailand and the region to look after their passports whilst on holiday and save themselves the time, hassle and cost of buying an ETD. Obtaining an ETD can take several days depending on the circumstances. You may need to file a police report, get new passport photos, and of course, have to travel to the Embassy.

You will also likely have to replace any visas you need for your onward journey. These expenses can spiral if you need to rearrange travel plans, so make sure you take out comprehensive travel insurance.

Layla Slatter MBE, HM Consul for Thailand said, “Our staff deal with people every day who need ETDs for a range of reasons.

Some are victims of crime, but we also hear of passports being damaged carelessly, or lost while travelling.

“Many of these situations could have been avoided and end up costing travellers valuable time and money. We strongly advise people to look after their passport, keep it safe and

check its validity well in advance of travel.

Simple steps such as locking your passport in a safe if you have access to one and carrying a photocopy with you can help prevent problems later on.”

Key tips for keeping your passport safe abroad • Value your passport and look after it carefully • Your passport is not always safer on you – lock it in a safe if you have access to one • Make two photocopies of your passport – leave one with friends or family and take the second with you, or store it online using a secure data storage site • Where possible, use this photocopy as alternative ID, for example when going out at night • Make sure your passport is valid • For certain countries your passport must be valid for six months after the date you travel – check the entry requirements before you go

ASEAN Friendship Caravan cements Thailand’s status as transport hub

The role of Thailand as a geographical travel, tourism and transport hub of ASEAN has been further cemented with the success of the second ASEAN Friendship Caravan, a 10-day motorcar convoy through Cambodia, Lao PDR, Vietnam and Thailand.

The 3,400-kilometre journey, organised by Toyota Motors in cooperation with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), was designed to publicise the many cultural and heritage destinations of the four countries that are now becoming increasingly accessible by road.

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said, “Thanks to the emergence of the Asian Highway and the support of the immigration and border-control authorities of the Greater Mekong Subregion, roads are set to become the most important source of transport and tourism in the years ahead.

“They will help open up new destinations, facilitate a more balanced distribution of income and jobs and enhance the role of travel and tourism in the rural economies,” he added. “They will complement the accessibility being provided by low-cost airlines, which will bring visitors to the regional airports, while the road network will do the rest.”

Representing the overseas agents, Manoj Singh Soin, founder and director, Viktorianz Travel Co, Ltd, India, said the new roads will allow the new generation of Indian travellers to indulge their passion for off-the-beaten track destinations, especially those with close affinity to Indian heritage and culture.

Representing the international media, Mohammad Azfar Bin Hashim, editor of the automotive publication EVO Singapore, said it would allow Singaporeans to enjoy a new driving experience. He said many Singaporeans are already taking advantage of the good highways between Singapore and Thailand to drive up to Bangkok via Malaysia. They will now be able to stretch that trip further into Cambodia, Lao PDR and Vietnam.

Jongkolnee Satiraasavanant, managing director, Panorama Discovery, said it would open up new opportunities for domestic and intra-ASEAN tourism as Thai people can see more of their own country and take quick cross-border trips to the neighbouring countries.

TAT also gained some valuable feedback from the participants. Soin noted that it would be important to harmonise the list of nationalities who can enter Thailand via all the different international gateways. He also mentioned the need to improve the connectivity of trans-border telecom networks to facilitate Internet access.

Azfar cited the need for better availability of halal restaurants for the growing number of Muslim visitors who would come from Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore.

After the farewell party at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Bangkok, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing (Asia and the South Pacific) Srisuda Wanapinyosak organised a small get-together to allow Thai ground operators based in the border provinces to network with the foreign travel agent representatives on the trip.

The internet was popularized in the 1990s and, since then, many have speculated on the death of traditional media, notably newspapers and magazines. It is certainly true that in Europe and the United States readership and circulation have both been in decline but, then again, that state of affairs began long before the advent of the World Wide Web. So where do we go from here?

What the internet does provide, of course, is free (well, usually free) access to news because any individual with basic computing ability can generate news by posting comments on blogs, publishing first-hand accounts or uploading interviews on YouTube or wherever. Moreover, those feeding the internet can do it virtually for free, whereas the traditional media have to pay editors, writers, journalists, data processing people and all the rest.

The way people consume news is also changing. Before smart devices became commonplace, accessing news or information from the internet was slow and painful. Until a few years ago, dialup speed was slow and many people still preferred a traditional newspaper rather than sitting in front of a computer screen. Of course, smartphones, tablets and laptops have changed all that in a real media revolution. Since smartphones can access not just the written word, but photos and videos too, smart devices have eclipsed the newspaper in terms of features and accessibility.

Popular search engines such as Google have revolutionized the way news is accessed and created. There are now millions of options if you want “the news”. The low cost of internet access and web hosting means that people do not need mega-cash to start publishing news on the internet. But the very cheapness of internet news brings its own problems. The motivation to create a reliable and well-researched story is often not there: the internet is indeed littered with opinions and exaggerated stories created simply to shock. No matter how outlandish the story – that the US president was born in Africa and is a Muslim or that the Titanic was sunk by a German submarine – the internet will provide the space. The question then arises how much of internet news is actually newsworthy.

Another issue is speed. Web reports are much faster than those appearing in newspapers as a blogger can start typing a first-hand account minutes after the event. Yet most internet news tends to be short and abridged and, if the issue is complex, the reader may end up with a very simplistic interpretation. Thoughtful deliberation on complex issues is not one of the strengths of the internet. But newspapers are expensive to print and the revenue from traditional or online advertisements may fall short in making up for the decrease in paper subscriptions. In the search for new markets, many newspapers have diversified into other mediums such as satellite communications and radio, sometimes successfully and sometimes not.

The entity that banks the most cash on the internet is the search engine. The secret behind search engine profitability is volume of traffic and the ability to target and to direct customers.

Content providers such as news websites do not make large profits by being Google’s search results. Regardless, being the top search results on a very popular search engine does help to reinforce the brand by keeping it relevant. We should also remember that traditional media these days receive more and more news leads.

With email, anyone can send a news lead to editors and reporters at several news sources all at the same time. Before the advent of email, letters were typed by hand and each had to be enveloped and stamped before mailing. Responses from an editor thus took days. But now responses can begin in a minute or two. Thus the traditional media can benefit from the internet as well as being threatened by it.

Both newspapers and the internet will continue to evolve, but they can co-exist. For example in India, daily newspapers actually sold more copies in 2015 than in any previous year. Some believe that this phenomenon can be explained by the amazing number of personal advertisements which most dailies include, whilst others think that the secret of the traditional media in the subcontinent is that it prints very little foreign news which is of little interest to readers according to research on the subject. Another growth area, particularly in Asia, is the development of news sites on the internet which are linked to traditional dailies.

The form and content of the newspaper may shift to something else, but the existence of the industry as a whole is forever. That is not to say that print journalism is as attractive a career as it once was. Investigative writers no longer travel first class round the world on over-the-top salaries. It’s a competitive world and one in which a clearly defined business model is indispensable.

Redemptorist Center Chapel Catholic Mass Schedule

Students at the Redemptorist Vocational School for People with Disabilities had a week off from study as a large majority of students traveled across country to participate in the National Games for the Disabled.

Those not selected to travel to the province of Nakhon Sawan, where the Games were taking place, were treated to an afternoon of sailing around the islands off the coast of Pattaya, thanks to the Disabled Sailing Association of Thailand.

It was thought that the torrential rains on the morning of the 16th January would

mean a postponement, but a few drops of water were not going to spoil anyone’s excitement.

Several vehicles, packed full of students and their wheelchairs, arrived at Ocean Marina Yacht Club in Na Jomtien where they were met

A flotilla of boats, including three large catamarans, left the

marina and spent several hours at sea, a new experience for almost every single student and teacher on board. Dodging the rain clouds the boats made their way south towards Koh Ped, known to most by its more famous name, Monkey Island, where the students were met by several hundred of the island’s inhabitants.

Apart from giving the students a new experience, it is also hoped that a few hours at sea will inspire them to take up the sport of sailing.

The school has a long tradition of providing sports facilities to its students. Many have gone on to represent

Thailand at international sporting competitions, including the Paralympic Games.

However, unlike Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia, Thailand has yet to enter a team in any international sailing competition open to people with disabilities. It is hoped that their first experience at sea will not be their last, and in the not too distant future a student from Pattaya will be sailing at the Southeast Asian Games or the Asian Games; or even better, the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

The Intimate Hotel with D & M Music Studio for the first time hosted a recital featuring Boaz Sharon, a piano professor and chair of piano at Boston University and director of the Young Artists Piano Program at Boston University Tanglewood Institute.

An expert in playing Chopin and Mozart, Boaz Sharon studied from the age of 13 with Stefan Askenase – famed interpreter of Chopin and Mozart – in Brussels, Belgium. He later pursued his piano studies in the US with Leonard Shure.

Sharon is the first prize winner and gold medalist of the Jaen International Piano Competition.

A second concert will be held in the coming months and will feature other musicians. These concerts are being held to promote intellectual tourism in the area.

New Nong Nooch theatre opens Chonburi governor Komsan Eakachai and various civic officials attended the opening of the new theatre at Nong Nooch Garden which replaces the old theatre on site which was opened 35 years ago. The new theatre can accommodate 2,000+ visitors at any one time and occupies 11,572 sqm.

The former site is being turned into a modernized retail outlet. Income from the first show at the new theatre was donated to the Rajabhakti Park Foundation.

Mazda CX-5 SkyActiv SUV Diesel Stylish, Fun-to-Drive and Economical AWD

Remember the old Mazda Tribute back in 2001? Tribute (what a name for an SUV) was actually a heavily rebadged Ford Escort powered by a fuel-guzzling V6

The current CX-5 is also the first Mazda vehicle featuring the company's full SkyActiv Technology concept boasting a rigid, lightweight platform combined with a new series of efficient power plants and transmissions resulting in reduced emissions and fuel consumption. This is the vehicle that won the coveted Car of the Year Japan award in 2012. Later that year came the CX-5 Mazda diesel variant – not one of those smoke-belching, tractorrattling diesels of yesteryear. Nope, the CX-5 is a “clean diesel” keeping emissions, fuel consumption and noise down.

This week Pattaya Today Automotive tests all new Mazda CX-5 XDL (diesel), the top of the CX-5 line-up, priced a cool 1.67 million baht. The entry-level CX-5 2.0-liter petrol engine costs 1.2 million baht.

Design The styling is pure “KODO”

inspired by the predatory stance of an animal stalking its prey and this styling captures the essence of poise, aggression and power. The front end features an inverted pentagonal grille.

The side-view mirrors have been moved from the A-pillar to the doors to improve visibility with a smaller blind-spot area.

The rear shows Mazda's unique styling again, with the “angry eyes” tail light cluster. Additional Mazda “zoom-zoom” in the CX-5 looks comes from the impressive, huge 19-inch alloy wheels.

Engine/Drivetrain Under the hood no more big, thirsty V6 but a four-cylinder 2.2-liter normally aspirated (without turbo) diesel motor that produces 175 horsepower and a whopping 420Nm of torque, giving the CX-5 probably the best performance in its class.

Regarding the already frugal fuel consumption the SkyActiv i-stop (idle stop-start) system further helps to control the thirst. The six-speed automatic transmission, smooth and willing with power distributed to all four wheels offers responsive performance at all RPMs. Interior Firmly bolstered black leather seats and soft-touch plastics are used throughout the cabin. The fit and finish is first-rate. The cockpit area feels functional and driver-friendly. Not too many buttons, levers and dials. Both front and back rows provide good leg,

head and shoulder room for the two occupants up front and two adults comfortably or three smaller persons.

The in-car entertainment comes with a 9-speaker premium Bose audio system. Perfect on a long haul. Music anyone? Adele, Justin Bieber or just plain Mozart? If you want a quiet ride sans singing, Mazda has invented a new type of noise insulation material and it works wonders at all speeds.

Safety Here Mazda CX-5 top range model gets a five-star NCAP rating with front, side and curtain airbags, stability control, emergency stop signal, hillstart assist, emergency stop signal, ISOFIX child restraint anchor points and rear view camera. at À La Campagne Na Jomtien The innovative development at À La Campagne continues. Somtum Villa, the popular Thai-Esan restaurant is now firmly established and has proved a resounding success. The busy Sukhumvit Highway, opposite the Pattaya Prosecutor’s Office, would not immediately spring to mind as a destination to enjoy a dose of pastoral peace but that’s exactly what the team at À La Campagne have achieved. Tall, leafy trees, a plethora of plants, tiled walkways, with a cleverly chic but unstructured garden contain the rustic European style farm and village. Already established is a bakery and an eclectic gift shop which now joins Somtum Villa. At the Salmon Dip

helm is the charming Chompoonut “Kay” Imudom who is developing this property into an extraordinary rural community destination.

The newest sibling to join the latest phase of development is their new western restaurant called Tea Factory and More. Designed with the concept of a Sri Lankan tea plantation, it is a rustic but elegant glassed conservatory set within the grounds with both indoor and outdoor seating. Who doesn’t like a cup of tea? Here at Tea Factory it is raised to giddy heights with over 20 global varieties. A tea lab allows for customers to explore the variances of Sri Lankan teas, Indian, Chinese, Taiwanese and also Thailand’s most

gourmet brands. House blends are very popular with their signature “la vie en rose”, the top seller while their mixologists will concoct a cocktail or mocktail for a surprising twist on the old “cuppa”.

If tea is not your thing, a full wine list and drinks menu is available to accompany the carefully devised menu. Just a word here, this is not a late venue, it closes at 8 pm during the week and 10 pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday, it does however, open at 10 am. Mick and I arrived the other week and while studying the menu we chose to start the proceedings with a glass of their house Chilean CornerStone Chardonnay.

From the appetizers we plumped for the salmon dip (B.195) to share which proved an excellent choice, soft and creamy with a subtle taste of salmon it was presented with a bowl of garden leaves, grapes, strawberries, celery, baby carrots and cherry tomatoes. The strawberries and grapes were the surprise taste sensations making very good friends indeed with the delicacy of Carbonara

We could just as well had tucked into deep-fried calamari or the perennially popular top sellers, baked macaroni in a trio of cheese sauce or the baked spinach with grilled bacon and cheese, both priced at B.170. Soups and salads are perfect lunchtime choices with the crab meat salad served with grilled pineapple or softshell crab salad with a honey mustard seed dressing – both must-tries for our next visit.

On the evening we visited, the signature dishes of the day (they change monthly) were duck confit with black pepper and strawberry sauce (B.350), grilled Norwegian salmon with either a rocket salad with balsamic dressing or alternatively accompanied by crab meat, green apple and an avocado salad. Lamb lovers would be well served by the grilled lamb rack with ratatouille, mashed potato and eggplant lasagna.

We turned back to the pasta and burger menu for our choices.

A reliable gastro-meter for any restaurant is the spaghetti carbonara and this was my choice while Mick opted for the garden herbed marinated lamb burger (B.295). Other burgers include their house gourmet short ribs burger, an organic pork burger and a crab meat wasabi cream burger for a flurry of fusion. A choice of original or carbon (black) rolls are on offer.

How did the carbonara rate on the gastro-meter? It came out on top, the al dente pasta was drenched in the creamiest of 3-cheese sauce, topped with slivers of Parmesan and rashers of streaky bacon cooked to crisp

perfection. The lamb burger came piled high with leaves, tomatoes and cheese and escorted by onion rings and a selection of ladies’ fingers, chillies and tarot tempura style crisp and airily light.

If ever you should linger and delight in a sugary confection it is here.

The in-house bakery produces the most amazing cakes, pastries and macarons made to the French chef’s traditional exacting recipes. We tried the apple crumble and the dark chocolate cake with raspberry cream for a luscious taste of sweet heaven.

Kay and her team are already planning for the next stage in the development which will be the organic salad farm, yoga classes, dance classes, and a Moulin Rougeinspired wine bar.

Have you ever been to Abruzzo, Italy? It’s located east of Rome on the Adriatic coast and is known as Italy’s queen of cuisine. It boasts a rich repertoire of robust mountain dishes and an abundance of delicious seafood. Why am I asking? Because if you have had the pleasure you will definitely want to evoke those culinary memories and if you haven’t there’s a treat in store. Chef Corrado (latterly of La Taverna in Bang Saray) has created an Italian home from home where the specialities of his region are served with an abundance of love and charming enthusiasm.

Open since late November last year, the buzz is already on the grapevine and Chef Corrado’s new bambino is the talk of the town. A lavish wine dinner has already taken place, the pizzas perfected, the wines settled and weekly promotions are in place. Mick and I visited recently to see (and taste) for ourselves the delights of this regional cooking from Abruzzo.

The restaurant itself is cheerful and bright with the state-of-the-art pizza oven taking centre stage at the

entrance with an open kitchen to the rear and a cool “cold cut” room complete with wine barrel tables and stools for casual eating.

Tradition states that Abruzzo’s shepherds were the inventors of the classic bruschetta and here the open Italian sandwiches are represented in a myriad of ways. A collection of the best, fresh vibrant salads are also tempting and I chose to start the proceedings with a “Primavera” salad with rocket and Padano cheese.

Balsamic dressing lifted and raised the taste sensations with sweet pops of cherry tomatoes and that deeply flavoured cheese paired perfectly with the peppery leaves. Mick opted to open with an order of mussels and baby clams (B.230) which had been bathed in a white wine liquor and accompanied by toasted bread to dunk and dip into the briny essence of the sea and the winey reduction.

This seems an appropriate time to mention the extensive wine cave upstairs which Corrado has painstakingly assembled since the inception of his restaurant.

Italian centric from not only the best wine estates in the country the wines have been chosen for their inherited attributes through the wine growing families across the years. The region’s flagship wine is the famous Montepulciano d’Abruzzo which, together with its white brother, Trebbiano, are exceptional. Talamonti is a very rich, lively red that offers exceptional value. Wines are available by the glass and carafe.

Pasta is the integral part of any Italian’s eating plan and here the menu fairly sparkles with pasta variations. From penne alla pastora (shepherd’s style), through the classic spaghetti frutti di mare or amatriciana through linguine alle telline (clams) to a speciality ravioli which caught my eye immediately.

This dish brings together the

wonderful flavours of braised beef and wild mushrooms but, not only that, the beef had been steeped in the famous Montepulciano red wine from Abruzzo. For sheer earthiness and profound complexity it was a star dish. Mick chose a tasty classic main dish, squid with potatoes (B.240). Soft succulent potatoes with tomatoes and the freshest squid results in a homely comforting plate of food fit for any nonna’s table.

The menu abounds with speciality homeland dishes from pan-fried sea bass with porcini mushrooms to 3-hour slow-cooked lamb with Mediterranean herbs and rosemary potatoes, beef sirloin cutlets and pork steaks to so much more. Pizzas naturally are a great attraction and on a Friday carry a 20 percent discount with a free beer. Crusts are thin and crispy and the toppings of supreme quality and for the epicurious there is the white pizzas which appear on the plate still bubbling and creamy with cheese but without their best pal, the tomato. Try one, they’re smothered in ricotta and mozzarella cheese and whichever topping takes your fancy.

Refuse a dessert in an Italian restaurant and they think you’re crazy and you would be to miss one of Corrado’s sumptuous homemade dolces. Fruit tarts (blueberry, apricot or apple) are prepared daily and exceedingly luscious they are – especially if you have a scoop of ice cream to melt over the fruity mirrored surface. Mick and I tucked into an oozingly delectable molten centred chocolate cake which with its 80 percent cacao was indeed a sweetly intense experience.

Botox, answering some of your questions!

Enjoying a relaxing time in Thailand, you want to return looking refreshed to your work after and hopefully remain looking younger for a bit longer!

Botox injections will help you achieve your goal. These injections can erase or at least attenuate greatly the crow’s feet from the corner of your eyes, also reduce your frown that seems to remain even if you are not mad at your coworkers! Some ladies have a smile that turns downwards at the mouth corners and gives them an unhappy look. Again Botox can help return a nicer smile to their face. Different techniques can also help lift a sagging jawline, smooth out the neck area…the uses are multiple and most importantly almost painless.

The procedure can be done in less than two hours; an anesthetic cream can be applied to the face prior to the injections.

The needles are even smaller than what diabetics use on a daily basis, so fear of needles should be minimized.

The only requirements are to not take aspirin or other forms of anticoagulants for a few days before the treatment. It is also recommended to stop vitamin supplements at the same time. This is to minimize the risk of creating some skin bruising during the injections. If some bruising occurs, a concealer can easily hide this.

Immediately after the injections, the patient must remain upright for four hours post injections to reduce chances of the solution migrating under the skin and create

an uneven muscle relaxation. It is also recommended to avoid extreme heat for a few days after: no sauna or full sunbathing. Sitting under umbrellas on the beach is recommended if staying outdoors.

The patient can expect the effect to last four to six months. Then the wrinkles will return gradually but usually not as pronounced as the original status. This can be explained by the mode of action of the Botox toxin. This toxin, totally safe if used by a professional, works by relaxing the muscles creating the wrinkles. These muscles are trained over the years into creating the wrinkles by repeatedly making the same facial expressions. Once under the effect of the Botox, these muscles become weaker and have to be retrained to regain their strength…somewhat like if your arm is in a cast for a couple of months, your muscles then atrophy and you need to rebuild them over the subsequent months.

Most patients see an improvement in their facial relaxation within four to seven days after the injections. The doctor usually discusses with the patient the intensity of relaxation that is desired. Some people want a stronger relaxation than others.

Botox has many uses other than cosmetic but this article will limit its scope to the aesthetic effects.

Many foreigners appreciate the sharper features that some Thai people show on their jawline but it is not the same from a Thai perspective.

Strong masseter muscles (the chewing muscles) can be injected with Botox and give a

softer jawline. From an oriental perspective, an oblong face is most desirable. Again different strokes for different folks.

Thai women also frown upon excessive calf development. These muscles can have their contour softened by Botox injections.

Excessive sweating, either underarm or from the palms, can also be controlled by Botox injections. These treatments require larger doses than facial contouring.

For some patients, as they are aging, the loss of facial fat may also need correction with hyaluronic acid injections. People refer to these as “fillers”. Many facial features can be improved and altered with these products. This will be discussed in a future article.

Farang men face hefty problem

Looking at the profusion of older farang in Pattaya, what would you assume is the biggest difficulty among aging men?

If you said heart problems you would be wrong.

How about prostate issues? Wrong again.

Diabetes? Hair loss? Low testosterone? No, No, and No. Maybe not surprisingly (by the looks of it) the leading problem faced by a good number of men is actually abdominal fat. Not only does a beer belly—or spare tire—detract from a man’s appearance, it also is indicative—and the cause—of potential medical disorders.

In a poll of some 600 men between the ages of 60-74, researchers asked about quality-of-life factors such as physical ability, vitality, and social and emotional health. They also measured the men’s body composition and testosterone levels.

The results: a big belly has the biggest impact on a man’s general health— potentially leading to heart problems, diabetes, stroke, colorectal cancer, high blood pressure and maybe even Alzheimer’s.

Furthermore, the study concluded, as men’s waistlines expand, their quality of life and sense of well-being diminishes. Low testosterone, by comparison, had little effect on the men’s lives.

There is little new here; hundreds of studies have shown that any excess fat can be problematic. However, when the fat accumulates in the abdomen, it’s much, much more dangerous, particularly for the typical sedate retiree in Pattaya.

Tobacco smoke drains the body's resources of antioxidants, particularly vitamin C, and further accelerates atherosclerosis.

With arteriosclerosis, calcium also builds up and becomes many times more concentrated in the wall of the normal artery than it was in childhood. Calcium content is what atherosclerosis and arteriosclerosis have in common.

Aging can be thought of as a progressive dysfunction of calcium metabolism, which involves the entire body.

- EDTA lowers blood calcium and thus stimulates the production of parathormone from the parathyroid glands.

This mild pulse of parathormone is responsible for the removal of calcium from abnormal locations (such as arteries) and the deposition of calcium in locations (such as bones) where it should be. This accounts for the mild recalcification of osteoporotic bones seen with EDTA.

- EDTA stimulates the enlargement of small vessels, so that they serve the purpose of collateral circulation around a blockage, rendering the blockage irrelevant.

- EDTA controls free radical damage due to lipid peroxidation by serving as a powerful antioxidant.

- EDTA removes abnormally located metal ions such as toxic heavy metals such as copper and iron that accumulate with age. This may be the major benefit of EDTA. With detox from heavy metals at the level of the vascular lining, small constricted vessels are allowed to expand to their normal (some would say "pre-industrial") size. This would allow better blood flow and better oxygenation of tissues.

- EDTA removes lead, cadmium, aluminum, mercury, arsenic and other toxic heavy metals, restoring enzyme systems to their proper functions.

- EDTA enhances the integrity of cellular and mitochondrial membranes.

- EDTA helps reestablish prostaglandin hormone balance. Prostaglandins, among other things, are responsible for the balancing act between contraction and relaxation of arterial walls and between clotting and the free flow of blood. Prostaglandins are produced from fatty acids, therefore lipid peroxidation upsets the balance of these vital hormones. EDTA chelates out the catalyzing metallic co-enzymes and thus inhibits lipid peroxidation, also serving the same function as an antioxidant.

- EDTA reduces the tendency of platelets to cause coagulation too readily. This tends to prevent inappropriate thrombosis, which blocks coronary arteries during a heart attack.

- EDTA increases tissue flexibility by uncoupling agerelated cross-linkages that are responsible for loss of skin tone and for wrinkling.

More than 3,800 exhibitors unveiled their latest technologies at CES® 2016 held in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Owned and produced by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)™, CES is the global gathering place for all who thrive on the business of consumer technology.

CES 2016 touched every major global industry and showcased the latest wave of products and technologies that are connecting the world, enhancing lives and solving global challenges. More than 170,000 industry professionals, including more than 50,000 from outside the US, were drawn to this high-level business event driving the ever-changing global technology industry.

Below are some of the trends featured at this year’s show.

All-Electric 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV

Chevrolet introduced the 2017 Bolt EV, fulfilling its promise to offer a long-range, affordable electric vehicle for the masses.

The Bolt EV, which will go into production by the end of 2016, will offer more than 200 miles of range on a full charge. It also features advanced connectivity technologies designed to enhance and personalize the driving experience.

LG OLED77G6P Awarded Best of Innovation at CES 2016, the award-winning LG OLED77G6P features OLED, short for organic lightemitting diode, a display technology with self-lighting pixels that can be individually controlled to achieve perfect black and infinite contrast. The individually illuminating pixels of LG OLED TV can switch completely off to achieve perfect black. That means that contrast—the difference between the lightest and darkest areas of the screen—is truly infinite, for a more natural, lifelike image with bolder colors. Other key features include expanded color palette, incredibly thin screen mounted on glass, and HDR Pro for greater picture detail.

Myth of the Good Nazi Albert Speer, Hitler’s architect and later armaments minister, has had good press. He managed to escape the hangman’s noose at the Nuremberg trial by claiming he knew nothing about the Jewish holocaust, blaming others for atrocities and claiming to have tried, howbeit unsuccessfully, to kill Hitler in his bunker with poison gas in the closing stages of the war. After Speer was released from prison in 1966, he spent the next 15 years giving TV interviews, publishing his memoirs, making pots of money and living a life of luxury. He died in London in 1981, a curious twist of fate as he had tried hard to destroy that city during the Second World War. Most historians have lapped up the Speer propaganda that he was a “good Nazi” who only tried to do his best for his county, had absolutely no idea what was going on in Auschwitz and had avoided socializing too much with other “bad” Nazi leaders such as Himmler. Speer was always prepared, if pushed, to apologize for the errors of the Third Reich even while insisting he had played no part in murders and mass starvation. He even denied he had heard Himmler giving a lecture in Posen in 1943, to assembled Gauleiters and others in which the SS leader talked openly of the need to murder Jewish men, women and children.

Yet Speer had given a talk on an unrelated subject at the same conference and on the same day.

Martin Kitchen in his new biography “Speer: Hitler’s Architect” (Yale University Press) will have none of this.

Trawling well-worn ground but also making full use of recently discovered archive material in Germany and Russia, Kitchen shows that Speer, far from being a good Nazi, was a genocidal villain of the first order: in fact the most successful

conman of the 20th century who managed to hoodwink the Nuremberg court and fool public opinion as well as two generations of historians (or most of them). After reading Kitchen’s book, it is impossible to escape the conclusion that Speer was very, very fortunate to have escaped the short drop on the end of a rope.

The prosecution at the Nuremberg trials, it must be admitted, did not have the resources or the time to dig up all the dirt on Speer. For example, they ignored the fact he was in charge of underground factories building so-called miracle weapons where conditions were appalling for the thousands of slave labourers involved as they died like flies without proper food or beds or sanitary facilities. Although Speer denied he was on good terms with Himmler, documentation has turned up to illustrate that the two had a successful working relationship in which the SS leader regularly provided concentration camp inmates for Speer’s military projects.

Speer was also responsible for clearing Berlin of many Jews and sending them to camps in Poland. Although Speer’s reasons were largely economic – he wanted the accommodation vacated

by Jews for Aryan Germans – his later defence that he had no idea what fate awaited the unfortunates on arrival in their new “homes” is extremely suspect. Given that some Auschwitz documentation certainly found its way into Speer’s files, for example he was asked his opinion about oven technology at the camp, one has to be extraordinarily naïve to swallow the Speer defence of total innocence. Fortunately for him, a lot of damning evidence did not turn up before Speer’s death.

The author also demolishes the well-known claim that Speer was spectacularly successful in making so many weapons that he almost single-handed prolonged the Second World War by two years. We now know that Speer doctored the production figures he showed Hitler. Soldiers at the front knew Speer was lying about his armaments success, but nobody of course took any notice of them. Speer also funded some very silly projects, such as the V-1 flying bomb and the V-2 rocket, which were very expensive and wasteful of resources but achieved next to nothing in military terms in 1944 and 1945. In fact the armaments minister wasted a lot of his time arguing with colleagues and subordinates about military policy in the very confusing bureaucracies which typified the Third Reich. Yes, Speer was a very lucky liar.

The real estate sector is in for some exciting annual events—and some new ones—as we look ahead One of the first exciting news items this year came from Terry Blackburn, managing director, Property Report Asia Magazine, announcing that “Ensign Media’s assets and operations are now part of PropertyGuru, Asia’s leading online property portal group.” The deal was formalized last month between Blackburn, CEO and founder of Ensign Media, and Steve Melhuish, CEO and co-founder of PropertyGuru.

The current issue of Property Report Asia magazine notes that the new entity, PropertyGuru International, will continue Ensign’s core operations, including Property Report Asia Magazine, Asia’s leading bimonthly print and online magazine for luxury real estate, architecture and design; the conference brand Property Report Congress, and the Asia Property Awards, entering its 11th year now with events across Southeast Asia and China.

Melhuish said, “I am very excited to welcome the Ensign team and businesses to PropertyGuru. This latest acquisition strengthens the group’s content, geographic reach and services we provide to real estate developers regionally.”

All existing Ensign staff will be absorbed into the PropertyGuru Group.

Last Will and Testament What happens to my assets in Thailand if I don’t have a Last Will and Testament?

A Last Will and Testament is a declaration of intent concerning dispositions of assets or other matters which shall take effect, according to law, after the demise of the testator. The document will detail your assets in Thailand, such as property, bank accounts, vehicle, and personal valuable items, designating who shall inherit and control them according to your wish to prevent unnecessary complications and quarrels between family members.

In Thailand, when a person dies without a Last Will and Testament, the intestate’s assets must be distributed in accordance with the law. As stipulated in The Civil and Commercial Code Section 1629, there are six classes of statutory heirs in Thailand.

Each class is entitled to inherit in the following order: 1. descendants 2. parents 3. brothers and sisters of full blood 4. brothers and sisters of half blood 5. grandfathers and grandmothers 6. uncles and aunts The right of a surviving spouse to share in the estate of a deceased spouse arises automatically from marital status. Spouses who are under separation do not lose the right of inheritance to one another as long as divorce between them has not been granted according to law. Ordinances awarding such rights on a surviving spouse make the spouse a statutory heir. Before any distribution of the estate to the relatives, half of the estate (Sin Somros) will belong to the spouse, if any, and the rest will be distributed accordingly.

Other than assets, what does a Last Will and Testament cover?

Your Last Will and Testament shall cover five important points: 1. Specifying your assets in Thailand 2. Appointing an executor or the person who will be in charge of settling and ensuring that your beneficiaries will receive their inheritance 3. Naming all the beneficiaries of your assets 4. How the assets shall be distributed to your beneficiaries 5. How your funeral must be arranged What are the documents that I need to prepare for my Last Will and Testament?

The term ‘leveraging’ is one of those overused words. Nonetheless, in certain financial situations, it can be a positive option for reasonably well-versed investors.

The fundamental premise is based on funds loaned against a current or new portfolio, at a very competitive interest rate, with a view to placing that additional money in investments that are deemed to have a strong possibility of achieving a higher return than the cost of borrowing.

Whilst this system has worked successfully for many, it should be considered carefully and is not for the uninitiated. Particularly for first-time users, conservative investments should form the basis of the additional portfolio; a modest gain on a larger amount with low volatility is preferable to buying higher risk holdings with much less chance of predicting the outcome.

We have shown below an example of how a $270,000 portfolio could, hypothetically, be increased to $510,000 by leveraging. In fact, the existing portfolio could be increased by 100 percent to $540,000, as long as it complies with the terms and is reinvested alongside the existing arrangement: Leveraging Portfolio Portfolio breakdown

What should I consider when selecting an executor for my will?

Overall, the executor will administer your estate and make sure that everything is done according to the terms of your will. Appointing a trusted executor is an important decision that needs thorough consideration. The responsibilities of an executor include making sure all assets are accounted for, all existing debts and tax obligations are paid, and that remaining assets are distributed to the correct beneficiaries in accordance to your will.

Most individuals tend to choose family members or other close friends or relatives to act as an executor, it is important that he is someone you can completely trust. If you don't have a friend or a family member with the necessary expertise, consider hiring a lawyer, accountant or similar type of professional to act as your executor.

I already have my Last Will and Testament in my home country; do I need a different will for my assets in Thailand?

Different jurisdictions usually require different formalities for the wills. Having a will drafted in your home country to cover all your assets in Thailand may be troublesome to your family, especially in the event that the will might be invalid in Thailand courts should it not conform to the Thai law requirements.

A Thai will should be prepared and signed on Thai territory to ensure that Thai rules regarding the form of your will apply.

It is very important to observe the correct legal formalities when signing, amending, or revoking your Will. If you fail to follow all of the specific formalities, then your Last Will won't be legally valid.

There are, naturally, limitations on the amount of the total portfolio that can be invested in any one fund – 20 percent is the current maximum.

The downsides are that if the new purchases fail to produce sufficient return to cover costs, the operation would be running at a loss and, worse still, if the value of the chosen additional investments drops significantly, then a liability for the shortfall would be incurred by the investor to the lending institution. Hence, our earlier comment that a conservative selection is generally the way forward.

On the brighter side, carefully chosen asset purchases can, especially in the current low interest rate cycle, often produce consistent, really worthwhile returns which produce very useful gains on a much larger figure than the investor’s original investment.

The attraction of this system loses its sparkle once central bank rates climb markedly. To balance that concern, the ‘Fed’ in America and other central banks are indeed likely to increase rates this year, however, a gradual and measured approach has been much publicised. This is open to interpretation but almost certainly means small increments, so as not to further destabilise the markets. It’s also important to note that the leveraging arrangement can be cancelled at any time, should the attraction diminish.

In conclusion, ‘leveraging’ is not for everyone but can be a very useful tool if handled with care.

Thailand's hospitality industry reached new highs in 2015, enjoying its best year in over two decades, according to research revealed exclusively by leading research institute STR Global at Thailand Tourism Forum 2016, held at the InterContinental Bangkok.

Thailand closed the year with an overall occupancy of 73.4 percent, an increase of 13.6 percent over 2014, as arrivals soared to near the 30 million mark, driven by the demand from the mainland China market. December was a particularly strong month as occupancy levels reached 77.4 percent, the highest levels since 1995.

Organised by C9 Hotelworks, in cooperation with Thailand's American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) and supported by the InterContinental Hotel Group, Thailand Tourism Forum, now in its fifth year, has emerged as an important platform for tourism news and discussion, attracting over 500 registered delegates this year.

Key announcements included global hotel chain InterContinental Hotel Group unveiling expansion plans of its Hotel Indigo brand in Phuket, following its Bangkok launch last year, and Southeast Asia.

Under a Royal Act made at the end of 2015, firms which sign up will be exempt from the following tax audits on transactions made before January 1, 2016: • Corporate income tax • VAT • Special Business Tax • Stamp Duty To qualify for these audit exemptions, the company must have had an income of 500 million baht or less in the last completed accounting period ended on or before December 31, 2015. Registration with the Revenue Department is open between January 15 and March 15, 2016 at www.rd.go.th.

The Revenue Department has also issued Royal Degree no.595 of December 31, 2015, which states that smalland medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) which register for One Book will qualify to pay income tax at a new, lower rate. An SME is defined as a company with a registered and paid-up share capital not over 5 million baht and income from sales and services of 30 million baht or less in the previous accounting years.

The new tax rate for SMEs is calculated as follows:

These exemptions do not apply to all current tax audits, companies avoiding tax, companies who have issued or used false tax invoices or currently involved in tax court proceedings. Also, firms which register on time but do not pay the correct tax in the future will be subject to investigation into back taxes.

It is also important to note that if a tax payer requests a refund during the year that it is exempted from an audit, the Revenue Department maintains the right to audit the specific month or year for which the refund is being claimed.

Furthermore, it is possible that, in the near future, the Revenue Department will oblige all tax-payers to use the e-payment system, which will be linked between banks and the tax authorities. It is also planned that banks be required, when considering a company loan application, to only accept the version of the financial statement usually submitted to the Revenue Department.

Thailand advancing towards sustainable tourism in line with global trend

Thailand is advancing in its efforts to place more emphasis on community-based tourism in line with the Royal Thai Government’s national tourism development plan for 20162017, and as part of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports’ strategies to attract more ‘quality’ visitors to Thailand.

The Stability, Prosperity, and Sustainability Tourism Forum 2016 held in Bangkok on January 16 formed part of the many activities under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) to educate the industry and encourage greater participation in promoting community-based tourism in order to achieve stability, prosperity and sustainability for

Thailand’s tourism. About 230 travel and tourism operators, private and government organisations from all around the country attended the forum.

In his opening address, H.E. General Thanasak Patimaprakorn, deputy prime minister of Thailand, provided a broad overview of the national social and development priorities, and lauded the role of tourism in fulfilling the targets and objectives. He pledged full government support for the industry.

H.E. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, minister of Tourism and Sports said, “Under the Royal Thai Government’s national tourism development plan for 2016-2017, we plan to disperse income to local communities nationwide as well as build a better quality

of life for the local people, strengthening the communities, and promoting the preservation of Thai culture and traditions.

All these will lead to the conservation of our natural resources and the sustainability of the country’s tourism industry as a whole.”

Hosted by the newlylaunched TAT Academy, the Stability, Prosperity, and Sustainability Tourism Forum 2016 was conducted to promote community-based tourism knowledge and to help various stakeholders identify new business opportunities. The event was also set to provide opportunities for participants to establish networks with the entrepreneurs who had successfully implemented a community-based tourism platform.

Dr. Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of TAT said, “Community-based tourism is a global trend. Today, travellers are in search for tourism products and services that take into account the environmental, economical, and social sustainability. This is a new aspect of tourism that TAT will be gearing toward for future tourism development of Thailand.”

The Forum featured keynote speakers: Robert Basiuk, director of Borneo Adventure, Sarawak, Malaysia, outlined how community-based tourism was becoming a global trend. The next speaker, Peter Richards, a sustainable tourism expert with the Community Based Tourism Institute (CBT-I), provided a more detailed focus on how Thai communities are catering to the tourism sector, both domestic and foreign.

Basiuk lauded Thailand as a model destination that adopts strategies and practices towards sustainability tourism.

He said that in order to achieve sustainability from the development and promotion of community-based tourism, which helps disperse income to all part of the society, the initiative would require cooperation from all involved, especially the private sector.

Richards added that, “Community-based tourism is popular among European travellers as they are looking for memorable quality travel experience. Community-based tourism means something simple but with a unique identity and story, and offers a new and insightful experience of the local way of life of the people

in that particular community.”

Some of the successfully developed and promoted community-based tourism products highlighted at the Forum included: • Bang Phlup Community, Bang Khonthi district, Samut Songkram: successfully combines agriculture to create tourism stories and activities for tourists.

• Ban Ko Klang, Mueang district, Krabi: creates a tourism product by presenting the people’s way of life. The community has received recognition at both the local and international levels including the Thailand Tourism Awards and the PATA Gold Award.

• Hivesters website: the online platform provides a onestop-shop for community-based

tourism activities where tourists can look for information and books instantly on www. hivesters.com.

• Local Alike: this is community-based tourism where local people take part in designing the trips and activities so visitors can travel like a local.

• Akha Ama Coffee: a local coffee brand originating in Ban Mae Chan Tai in Chiang Rai but has made a worldwide reputation.

• Maajaidum: brand of local whisky made from coconut flower based in San Kamphaeng in Chiang Mai. • Mae TEETA: a brand of organic textiles and indigo-dyed fabric which has found success from further developing the folk wisdom to create a brand of unique fabric.

Youth Focus The Importance of Physical Play in Child Development

“Learning – According to the Child Development Institute, 75 percent of brain development occurs after birth.

Physical play helps a child to develop connections between the nerve cells and the brain.

As these connections develop, a child’s fine and gross motor skills, socialization, personal awareness, language, creativity and problem solving are improved. Ideal physical play incorporates play with social interactions and problem solving.

According to the North Carolina Child Care Health and Safety Resource Center, physical activity promotes early brain development and learning in infants and young children. — Kimberly Wonderly In ancient times everybody had to be physically fit in order to survive. Today we think that physical fitness is for sport professionals, and that the rest of us can watch them on TV. Schools that must operate on a low budget, often “save” by cutting back on their sporting

activities. There is an outdated perception that body and mind can be separated since the brain is in the head and the body is below the head. Many people think that students can still function properly if they are inactive. The truth is that they will learn much better if they include physical activity in their daily schedule.

But this is not the only good (or bad?) news. The function of the cerebellum in the brain was always seen as only related to the control of voluntary muscle movements.

Neuroscientists have now established that the cerebellum was totally underrated. Apart from movement, this part of the brain also processes learning.

(1995: Annual Society of Neuroscience Conference) Many established beliefs about the cerebellum have been challenged in recent years. It is now realized that its function is of vital importance for our whole existence.

Students from Garden International School (GIS) created some wild and colourful hats to celebrate International Hat Day. Many students and teachers came up with some incredible designs to mark the occasion, and then paraded them around school to show others their amazing work.

Strong links exist between the cerebellum and memory, spatial perception, language, attention, emotion, and even decision-making.

These findings shed new light on the value of physical education, movement, and games in boosting the process of acquiring knowledge. As children move over, under, around, through, beside and near objects, these words take on greater meaning to them. Such spatial orientation is also necessary for letter identification, e.g. the difference between ‘b’ and ‘d’. It indicates that early movement is an essential element of the basic learning process. Knowledge acquisition relates to all aspects of children’s lives and it must actively involve them.

Many researchers have indicated that children who are physically active achieve higher marks than their sedentary friends. Every bit of exercise is beneficial. The

American Heart Association recommends that children and adolescents participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.

There is a perception that sport activities are for a small number of achievers and that the rest of us can be spectators.

Some form of sport activity must continue throughout life.

Parents should set an example and get involved as far as possible. A weekend is the ideal time for active family fun!

Swimming is an excellent form of exercise which is perfect for our climate. Mozza Yamaguchi, one of the top swimming coaches in Tokyo, writes in an article for the magazine Tokyo families (14.11.2011): “The benefits of swimming are unique, uplifting, and contribute to the positive development of the child.

Researchers have documented that the stimulating effect of child-paced swimming lessons has the potential to increase intelligence, concentration, alertness, and perceptual abilities; as well as an improvement in social, emotional, and physical development”.

Meanwhile, conspiracy theories have raged on Facebook. One blogger argued that the death hoax was necessary to deflect questions about president Obama’s citizenship or to boost his approval ratings in public opinion polls as the US economy remained in the doldrums.

Another claimed that the supposed DNA match was done suspiciously quickly, or that the real bin Laden had been kept frozen in ice for ten years to be rolled out when convenient.

On Fox News, a host said that bin Laden’s death could not be verified and suggested that Obama was using the supposed death to save his “lousy” presidency. As regards DNA evidence, that’s

just “numbers on a piece of paper”. Although al Qaeda has publicly stated that bin Laden was killed in the US raid of early May, some sources remain unconvinced.

by Derek Brook On the rotation this Friday for the Tropical Golfers was Pattavia Country Club. A large group of 25 golfers decided it was worth it to take the drive out, and after cups of ambition and victuals at BJ's Lodge, the cars and van were loaded and off we went.

The drive to Pattavia is slowly getting better. Some more shortcuts and bypasses have been discovered, and when the freeway (or will it be tollway?) is finally done things will be better still. Even with the current drive it's worth the trip. Pattavia represents great value and the course is in very good to excellent condition.

The back nine especially is scenic and well maintained, and certainly no one complains about the facilities anymore.

Check it out. With a full load of golfers it would be difficult to get into the winners circle,

John & Vero just too good on the day!

After the first two weeks of January being taken up by the PSC Club Championship and Colin’s Golf Society 3-day Tournament at the Green Valley complex it was business as usual with a combined competition at the Pattavia Golf Course. We had six groups signed up and a normal tee time of 10 am which we were easily on time for despite the roadworks on 331 but we weren’t so lucky on the way home with a one-hour-and-20-minute journey due to the “crawl” for several kilometres once we got back on 331. Our first group got away 10 minutes ahead of schedule in perfect weather although a bit “steamy” with very little wind and the course was in good shape with the greens being considerably more friendly than has been reported lately. There were no major holdups in the earlier groups and our round was over in about four hours and 10 minutes.

We had two flights with A Flight being for handicaps 0 to 20 and B Flight for players with 21 handicap and over. In addition there were nearest the pins on two of the par threes and longest first putts on hole 9 and 18.

with an almost flawless 41 points, Dave Dadwallader came second on 38 points and Mr Consistency (well most of the time) Christian “Psycho” Boysen ended up in third spot with 36 points. We had a “bolter” in the B Flight with Vero Morgan taking first place with an outstanding 44 points.

With two golfers tied 11 shots further back on 33 points, a countback was needed which resulted in second place going to Jim Proctor (18-point back nine); Peter Gangur (16-point back nine) finished in third spot.

by James Olsen Twenty-seven golfers headed out to tackle The Big Navy Course. We were to play courses north and west from the yellow tees. Big Navy can be daunting to some but personally I find it a challenging course in particular north and west.

Course was in great nick with the greens being slow for the first hour, but as soon as the sun was out the greens did a 360. There was a threat of rain but that passed as quick as it arrived. Fairways had a bit of run and there was plenty of water to challenge all golfers as it was placed, sometimes at two or three locations on the one hole.

Alex Field left day light between he and the next place getter (it is rumoured that Essendon is looking at Alex as a fitness adviser). In Division B it was tight at the top of the tree with Andrew Allen taking the chockies on a C/B from Shane Young.

A great day was had by all returning to the Swan where the beer was cold and flowing freely as were the stories. Welcomed back was Colm Mullen, here to enjoy the warmer weather and great golf courses. We also said goodbye to Andrew Allen, Robert Allen, Gary Williams, Brad Green, all returning to Aust. Travel safe and come back soon.

With a fabulous field of 40 golfers, we headed off to Mountain Shadow after confirming with the golf course that we would have more than the original six groups that we had booked for. The course was quite busy but we were able to get our first group away a few minutes ahead of our scheduled 10 am tee time.

The weather was fine and the golf course was in very good shape with the greens firm and true. The field moved smoothly throughout and most of us completed the round in about four hours and 20 minutes.

Long first putts Nth 9 – John Davis West 9 – Robert Allen Deefa was the happy recipient of many donations for the needy children of Pattaya and the golfers are thanked for their generosity.

Christian Boysen & Nicklas Lohse With the large field we were able to have three flights, A Flight for 0 to 14, B Flight for 15 to 19 and C Flight for players with handicaps of 20 and over, with three places in each flight. In addition there were four nearest the pins and two longest first putts on the 9th and 18th greens.

The winner in A Flight was Christian “Psycho” Boysen who had 34 points, 2 more that Gerd Riedler in second place and with two golfers on 30 points; the resultant countback saw Ed Wyckoff (17-point back nine) finish third with Dave Cadwallader (15-point back nine) just missing out. Nat Rukkid (17-point back nine) was the winner of B Flight with 31 points on countback from Colin “Donkey” Davis (15-point back nine) in second place. In yet another countback to decide third place we had two players on 28 points and it was Dave Lehane (16-point back nine) who prevailed over a luckless Jayson Schembri (15-point back nine). With the best score of the day it was youngster Nicklas Lohse who triumphed in C

Local Sports PSC Tropical Golf from BJ's Tuesday: Greenwood (A & B) It is a long way to this course. I suppose it is the same distance it has always been, but for the last few years it has been much quicker and getting better, until the last few trips. Of late the trip has become an ‘obstacle course’ especially on the 331 and although I am informed that beyond Greenwood the road becomes fine, it is now a bit of a nightmare. Indeed some of our drivers have expressed concern about driving to the three courses in this area and some have decided not to drive there.

The ‘bouncy, bouncy road’ between Route 7 and the 331 continues to deteriorate, but the ingenuity of some of the drivers never fails to amaze me and we go down roads now that I never knew existed and I have been driving to the courses in this area for many years. But the 331 is still a problem. One day! However this road many years ago was really dangerous to drive and was my most hated road, I nearly got wiped out twice on a single lane as oncoming

traffic insisted on filling the road. I suppose it is much safer now and it will get better.

On this day we had an early start. I am pleased to say that all the transport made it in time, just, most shaken but not stirred. Fortunately we went through paying for the round very quickly and it was soon onto the first tee where we were told we were to play the A and B nines.

On the way up some had gone through heavy rains so on reaching the first tee we were surprised to find the course in good condition, although it had some rain of late. We expected rain, but as it turned out the day became a really fine day, only a few spots, it actually became quite warm in the last few holes.

It was a really nice day, the fairways were good, the rough was as expected and the greens were fast and true.

It has to be said that all the players had a really good walk about and played well in the circumstances. Then it was time to get in the changing room where we found probably the worst showers of

Flight winners the last year. Sad after a great round but also surprising as this was the first time we could remember them being bad and a cold shower that only dribbled was something we could put up with.

Then it was into transport and back to Pattaya and no talk about the road on the way back as if anything it is less good that way than it is going.

We were back about the normal time so it was soon into the results.

In the A Flight, 0 to 18, we had some great scores and in both flights if you did not score 39 points you were not in the frame. The winner in the A Flight was Landis Brooks

with a really fine round of 42 points that meant a gross of 75, good round. In second, on a countback, was Brian Parish with 41 points and Richard Kubicki in third. In fourth was John Hackett with 39 points.

In the B Flight we had a countback on 41 points that saw Jim Ferris in first and Derek Brook in second. In third was Dick Warberg with 40 points and in fourth was Torsten Bischoff with 39 points.

Most of us who have been here for 15 years or so have never seen it this warm in January. Even Emmerson has not needed to wear his sweatpants and hoody watching those 4 am NFL Playoff games!

I guess this heat beats the alternative.

Chris Bailey has been here almost a month and for his last round in Pattaya, Chris finally earns his first podium place!

Good timing, mate, shame you can’t stay a bit longer now that you’re warmed up.

Up the leader board we see the familiar name of Kenny Aihara again, but this time it is Peter Wilson who snags a first place today. Nice 41 there, Pete!

and one better again were Alan Rothwell and Andy Makara who tied for the win on 34 points. You just never know.

It is a tough and tight layout and you never see good scores here, but it is a little gem of a track that is a great test of golf. We got lucky here today as our final group that teed off at 9:45 were followed by the greenskeepers sanding all the greens! For us, the course was in great shape and really lovely condition. For later groups, maybe not so much!

Anyway, there’s Kenny on that podium again! I am sure he did not expect a 32 to get him anything, but here at Treasure Hill that’s a decent score. Our old pal Mark Wood did one better with a 33

Pet treats can be a weighty problem Recognizing the dangers of obesity, most of us watch our weight (we either watch it climb or keep an eye on our diets) and we may pay particular attention to treats such as desserts and other sweets. But many do not give that same consideration in dispensing treats to our pets—a major factor contributing to overweight cats and dogs which can lead to lifethreatening ailments.

If you want to help Felix and Fido stay healthy, limit treats to 10 percent of their total daily calories. Their calorie needs depend on their weight, age and activity level. For example, a small 5-kilogram dog may need only 300 calories a day if he is old and inactive, whereas a younger, energetic animal may need up to 500 calories; so treats should be limited to 30 to 50 calories, respectively. Ask your vet about your pet's needs. And beware: some treats can weigh in at more than 75 calories each!

Cats generally need fewer calories than dogs of the same size, and even fewer if they are indoor cats that live sedentary lives. Tailor your treating habits accordingly. Looking for nonfattening treats? Catnip is a good

We found this tiny 3-day-old kitten when visiting a local builder. While talking to the office manager we could hear her desperate cries and found her in a small box on top of a stack of pallets.

Sadly her two siblings were already dead.

She is now 3 weeks old, is doing well and should be ready in a few weeks’ time.

He has to have his eyes cleaned every day after surgery that he received when he was just a tiny kitten. As you can see, his favourite hobby is eating!

This handsome boy was rescued as a kitten with his three brothers and sisters. Sadly, he was sick for quite a while and so missed the opportunity to get a new home like his siblings.

As you can see, he is grown-up now and still waiting to be chosen.

Feline Leukemia Virus

Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) is second only to trauma as the leading cause of death in cats, killing 85 percent of persistently infected felines within three years of diagnosis. The virus commonly causes anemia or lymphoma, but because it suppresses the immune system, it can also predispose cats to deadly infections. But the virus doesn’t have to be a death sentence; about 70 percent of cats resist infection or eliminate the virus on their own.

FeLV is passed from one cat to another through saliva, blood, and to some extent, urine and feces.

Older cats and indoor-cats in single-cat households have little risk of contracting the virus.

Symptoms of infection include pale gums; yellow color in the mouth and whites of eyes; enlarged lymph nodes; bladder, skin, or upper respiratory

These two handsome and friendly brothers did go to a new home together last year but sadly their new owner had to go away and couldn't take them with him. So they are back here waiting to be chosen again.

Both are very friendly, are used to children and just love to run and play in the garden.

To channel your cat’s energy, use toys like balls or a fake mouse for batting. A paper bag can give her hours of pouncing fun.

And to protect yourself, never encourage a kitten to play with your hands or feet. Nips become bites as a cat grows up.
